Not your average bear Lions and bears are helping Caroline Springs police officers spread the warm and fuzzies. Caroline Springs Lions Club president Nadeem Hafiz and secretary Rashid Bashir delivered 18 Care Bears to Caroline Springs police station last week to aid young children experiencing trauma. Sergeant Laura Woolfe said the bears were important in communicating with the most vulnerable victims of crime. “The Care Bears are a great tool for us to provide to children who come to the police station and have been exposed to violence and trauma,” Sergeant Woolfe said. “We deal with children with trauma all the time. The bears are important to our work … they mean that when we approach a child, they will feel a bit more comfortable. “It takes their mind off the trauma that they have experienced.” Sergeant Woolfe thanked the Caroline Springs Lions Club, which raised money for the bears through membership fees and events. Violent gang rampage By Tate Papworth Three people, including a Melton teenager, were taken to hospital in serious conditions after a gang of up to 15 went on a violent rampage through Sunshine on Saturday night. Police have been told the violence began about 11.25pm when a group of 10 to 15 males set upon a 35-year-old Braybrook man who was walking along Hertford Street. The group searched his pockets and made demands for his wallet before they were scared
off by local residents. The Braybrook man was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police believe the same group carried out a series of vicious assaults on Kennedy Street, including that of a 16-year-old Sunshine boy who was taken to hospital in a critical condition. His friend, a 15-year-old Melton boy, came to his aid but was also assaulted and had his keys and phone stolen. He was taken to hospital suffering serious injuries.
A 13-year-old Melton girl and a 13-year-old Melton boy were also confronted by the group on Kennedy Street. The boy was assaulted and suffered minor injuries. At the intersection of Kennedy Street and Devonshire Road, the group used a stick to assault a 14-year-old Corio girl. She was searched for valuables and her phone was stolen. Police believe the group continued its destruction, throwing a rock through the rear
passenger window of a car parked in the street. The offenders, all male, are described as being of African appearance and aged between 14 and 20 years of age. Police are continuing to investigate the sequence of events. No arrests had been made at the time of publishing. Anyone who witnessed the incidents or has information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential on-line report at crimestoppers. com.au

Poll heat for roadworks push By Esther Lauaki Upgrades to the Western Highway in Melton, starting with an interchange at Bulmans Road, top the agenda with Melton council and politicians in the lead-up to the federal election. Mayor Bob Turner has flagged the council’s infrastructure wish list in recent weeks and called for “critical upgrades” to the Western Highway between Melton and Caroline Springs. The council, one of 21 councils in the National Growth Areas Alliance, is getting behind the
Catch Up with the Outer Suburbs campaign, which aims for better access to roads, transport, local jobs and community facilities in Victoria’s fast-growing outer suburbs. Accessing the Western Highway from Coburns Road has long been a bane for Melton commuters because of a bank of traffic from Bulmans Road. Earlier this year, a petition was organised to support a full diamond interchange at Bulmans Road to help ease congestion. Cr Turner said the highway upgrade was council’s “number one priority”.
“Melton is one of Australia’s fastest-growing communities,” he said. “In the next 30 years, our population will double to more than 400,000, making Melton as big as Canberra is today. “The highway can’t cope with this growth and needs urgent upgrades.” Improvements sought for the highway between Melton and Caroline Springs include removing direct property access, bus stops and central median breaks, a half-diamond interchange at Mt Cottrell Road, a pedestrian overpass bridge at Arnolds Creek and Paynes roads and an interchange at Harkness Road.
Federal Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor and Melton state MP Steve McGhie added their support to the roads revamp calls. Mr O’Connor said his calls for the improvements over a number of years had been ignored. Both politicians said it would take a concerted effort at all levels of government to get the project moving. The Catch Up with the Outer Suburbs campaign includes a petition for residents to sign calling for the upgrade to the Western Highway. Petition: catchup.org.au/melton

A festival that really grows on you Farmers, orchardists and vegetable growers will celebrate the fruits of their labour in Bacchus Marsh this weekend. Thousands are expected to descend on Main Street on Sunday to join in the annual Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival, which showcases the best produce the area has to offer. Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association president David Durram said there would be something for everyone.
“The festival was once associated with the gathering of fruit and vegetables to provide people with enough food to last all winter, but harvest is now more about boutique eats, music, merriment and entertainment,” Mr Durram said. “This season we have a lot of apples and pears, we have some really great food and fruit vendors. And one of the popular attractions is the flight simulator, which will be run
by the local gliding club. We have plenty of strawberries still in season because of the hot weather. And now is a good time for apple picking, with a few different varieties around.” Other highlights of the event will include tractor displays, scarecrow decorating and gumboot throwing. Firewood collectors have been warned not to stray outside designated collection areas and only take what they need. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning last week opened the autumn firewood collection season across Victoria. Assistant fire chief Aaron Kennedy urged residents to stick to designated areas on public land during the season. “Only collect firewood from designated firewood areas to protect sites of cultural and environmental significance,” Mr Kennedy said. “People should drive on existing forest tracks and roads when collecting firewood and they must stay within collection limits, which are a maximum of two cubic metres per person per day and a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per year. “Some households rely on firewood for winter heating, so it’s important to consider others when collecting firewood.” Mr Kennedy said felling trees for firewood was prohibited and DWLP officers would be patrolling to ensure people are doing the right thing. “Firewood collectors should check local weather and forest conditions before heading into the forest to make sure it’s safe,” he said. “Forests are currently extremely dry due to below average rainfall and hot summer so it’s important firewood collectors are careful not to start fires when using chainsaws and splitters.” To view the interactive map: www.ffm. vic.gov.au/firewood Esther Lauaki

Arnolds Creek Primary School pupils are enjoying the peace and tranquility of their new sensory garden. The garden, officially opened last week, was designed with the school’s ties to indigenous and Japanese cultures in mind. Principal Frank Pawlowicz said the garden, which includes a water feature and amphitheatre, provides a peaceful and relaxing environment for staff and pupils to enjoy. “We were privileged enough to be awarded a grant to construct a sensory garden and creative an outdoor learning space for our students,” Mr Pawlowicz said.
Kinder applications open
“A sensory garden benefits all our students and helps those with individual needs also. “The colours around the concrete as well as the plants are all inspired by indigenous Australian and Japanese cultures. “Arnolds Creek is based on heritage ground from our indigenous past and the school colours also reflect that, which is why this garden is special.” The sensory garden was constructed with a $200,000 grant from the state’s inclusive schools fund. Spider wins battle of the beasts By Esther Lauaki A redback spider was the unlikely victor in a battle between two mortal “venomies” at a Ravenhall property. The deadly widow killed an eastern brown snake – the second most venomous land snake in the world – with a bite to its body. Snake catcher Jarrod Bingham, whose area includes Melton and Bacchus Marsh, was called in last Monday to identify and collect the young brown which was striped from head to tail.
“The redback spider was inside the brown snakes mouth and just crawled out,” Mr Bingham said. “The snake had a nasty spider bite on the fifth stripe. “It could very well have been mistaken for a tiger snake because of its stripes. “You can’t always identify a snake by its colours. They are not always that uniform brown colour, sometimes they’re blotchy, or they have a black head or they can come in a variety of colours. “It’s important for residents to be able to
recognise different snakes so that they can keep safe.” Mr Bingham said development around Bacchus Marsh was a significant factor for the rise in snake encounters. He said call-outs to the area were about double last year’s level when he would take about four calls a fortnight.

Dressed for success Taylors Hill Primary School has put its generosity on show, becoming one of the top fundraisers in the state for the annual Jeans for Genes Day. The fundraiser, which helps raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute by encouraging people to wear jeans to school or work, raised thousands of dollars in 2018. Taylors Hill primary raised $830 to be the ninth highest fundraiser out of all Victorian schools that participated. Principal Danielle Stella last week said it was a proud day for the school. “We have done this each year since we opened in 2010, and it’s always been a big part of the year to bring awareness and raise some money along the way,” Ms Stella said. “This was our biggest year so far, and it’s great to bring awareness and recognition to such an important cause. “As well as raising money, we make sure that
the school community is aware of where the money is going, and educating the students and giving families something to talk about.” Jeans for Genes head of fundraising Andrew Kelly said schools such as Taylors Hill primary were crucial to their fundraising efforts. “We are working with the aim of giving every child the best start to life. It is a privilege to work in partnership with every school … protecting the health of our nation’s greatest treasure: our children,” he said. “We would not be able to do the important work of research into children’s genetic diseases without the sustained generosity of our partner schools.” Ewen McRae Principal Danielle Stella with pupils Zoe, Kayla, Isaac and Allya. Drug dealer loses bid to appeal By Goya Dmytryshchak Former Australian kickboxing champion Dragan ‘Machine Gun Charlie’ Arnautovic has lost his bid to appeal a 10-year jail term for drug trafficking. The 56-year-old was found guilty by a County Court jury of trafficking a commercial quantity of heroin and trafficking methylamphetamine between November 9 and December 17, 2016. He was sentenced last June to a non-parole period of eight years in prison. The Melton West resident and gym owner had sold drugs to covert police at Laverton and
Williamstown. Drugs were also found at his home and underneath his mother’s house in St Albans. In total, police recovered about $374,000 worth of drugs. Arnautovic, who has spent about 24 years in custody since 1990, committed his latest offences while on parole for similar offences. The sentencing judge stated that in light of Arnautovic’s three prior substantial terms of imprisonment for similar offences, deterrence, denunciation and protection of the community were important considerations. Arnautovic’s appeal was based on claims
that he shouldn’t have been charged for two different drugs when they had been found simultaneously. However, Court of Appeal justices Emilios Kyrou and Lesley Taylor struck out his bid to appeal. “We reject the applicant’s submission that the fact that the methylamphetamine was stored in the same location as the heroin diminishes the seriousness of the offending. “The two offences involved different drugs. “They would have caused their own separate harm to those who would have used them.” Arnautovic will be eligible for parole in 2026. His 77-year-old mother was not charged.

Doggy circus breeds fun Bacchus Marsh aged care-residents are delighting in their weekly visits from a dog circus. Papillons Rusty and Qed have been winning the hearts of residents at Providence aged-care by performing stunts, skateboard tricks and playing the piano. One of their owners, volunteer Robyn Youl, said the canine cuties worked the room for cuddles and pats, bringing residents a little joy along the way. Ms Youl and husband Barry began volunteering with their pet show after they retired 20 years ago. “We started out with labradors and schnauzers, but they became a bit much to handle, so we downsized to papillons,” she said. “It’s a lively show. Qed often has days on strike.
“The residents just love it when he rebels and ignores my commands!” The Youls, who live in the adjoining Providence retirement village, both had parents who lived at the aged-care residence. “The joy on the residents faces as they interact with the dogs is plain to see,” Ms Youl said. Residents call out rubbish plan By Esther Lauaki
Can they fix it? Yes they can An initiative aims to get handy Melton residents together over fixing bits and bobs. The Melton South Community Repair project, facilitated by Djerriwarrh Health Services’ health promotion team, provides a free opportunity to meet people with an interest in tinkering and do-it-yourself repairs. Djerriwarrh chief executive Belinda Scott said the Community Repair project, co-ordinated by Linking Melton South, focused on building a strong and vibrant community. “It is a great way to build relationships, share knowledge and get to know people in your neighbourhood,” Ms Scott said. “Every month a dedicated group of volunteer fixers encourage people to bring down their broken goods to connect and learn from one another, helping to reduce the amount of landfill, and creating a more supportive, connected community.” Ms Scott encouraged anyone interested in taking part to attend an upcoming session on the last Saturday of each month from March 30 at the Melton South Community Centre. Campaigners against the expansion of Ravenhall landfill are angry the tip will be accepting hundreds of tonnes of recycling from nearby suburbs. The Cleanaway Melbourne Regional Landfill is set to receive about 175 tonnes of recycling from Hobsons Bay after the Environment Protection Authority banned SKM Recycling from accepting recyclable waste at its Coolaroo and Laverton North sites due to fire risks. Melton council told residents it was not among the 20 Victorian councils affected by closures which are now into their third week (since February 15). It is unclear when the sites will reopen. But Stop the Tip campaigners, who have been embroiled in a long-running dispute over Cleanaway’s 93-hectare expansion proposal, have concerns that more waste going to landfill means more problems for residents. Lead campaigner Marion Martin said the community was “unhappy” with the recyclable waste arrangement. “It’s bad enough that we have a landfill stuck in the middle of residential areas,” Ms Martin said. She said the group, which appeared before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) last year opposing the tip expansion, was still awaiting a decision. “We spent six weeks at VCAT from September through October … I believe it was one of the longest cases that VCAT had heard,” Ms Martin said. “Part of the conversation was about recycling going to the landfill and we were told that this would not be the case – but obviously now it is actually happening. “The government needs to do something about it.”

Harvey Norman Electrical proprietors Luke Deleo in the Sunshine store (top) and Rahoul Pozniakov in the Taylors Lakes store. (Pictures: Luke Hemer)
Welcome to the Bravia world of Sony’s sensational releases Luke Deleo, proprietor of Harvey Norman Electrical in Sunshine, and Rahoul Pozniakov, proprietor of the matching business in Taylors Lakes, are gearing up to meet home cinema enthusiasts who will share their thrill in having the best Sony releases in store. The pair can talk you through their latest “babies” and answer any questions you might have. For about $3300, you can transform your viewing and listening experiences. Sony’s HT-X9000F sound bar is the perfect complement for the Bravia X9000 TV, now available with great value deals at Harvey Norman stores in Sunshine and Watergardens in Taylors Lakes. Why is this good news in home theatre? The Bravia has legendary picture quality. Seamlessly couple it with a 2.1 channel Dolby Atmos/DTS:X sound bar with a vertical sound engine and you will have a mindblowing cinematic set-up. With the sound bar, no matter what type of room you’re in, two front speakers reproduce “vertical” audio, creating virtual surround sound that seems to come from all around. The advanced digital signal processing converts any audio to immersive surround with just the click of a button on the remote – one for every sound.
Modes include cinema, music, games, news and sports. A music playback function is activated by plugging in a USB and streaming over Bluetooth technology. And the sound bar looks good in front of your Bravia TV – they can be wirelessly connected for an ultra-clean look. The Bravia X9000 TV produces ultra-realistic 4K HDR entertainment. It has powerful realtime image processing for truly detailed, upscale pictures. Beautiful night shots, full of dazzling lights and deeper blacks – with up to six times the contrast of conventional LED TVs – are on offer. The X-Motion Clarity technology keeps fast action smooth and clear, even during highspeed scenes. This TV brings you the excitement of movies and games by handling a variety of HDR formats, including HDR10, Hybrid Log-Gamma and Dolby Vision. In the main bedroom, the front-facing bay window is bedecked with pulldown Holland blinds, while underfoot there are smart grey carpets. A rim of snowy wainscoting runs the perimeter of the room and contrasts with the pale latte coloured walls – a feature that continues throughout the house and enhances its neutral tones. Across the timber laminate-floored foyer, a sunken lounge room has an eye-catching wood fireplace – its prominent mantel has inset consoles for television and media that are both funky and convenient. Quick tips to help sell your home This checklist will help you take the first critical steps towards selling your home in 2019, writes Kate Farrelly from Domain.
2. Inspect properties in your neighbourhood You’ll want to physically inspect properties so you can see how your home compares with the stock available to buyers. Matt Walther of ClearHome, a company that helps clients get their property ready for sale or rent, says this is the best way for would-be vendors to learn about the competition. “Have a look at what else is on the market, because ideally you’ll want your property to match or exceed the standard of what’s already available,” he says. 3. Get a pest and building inspection A pest and building inspection report will highlight any major issues with your property and give you the option to deal with these before your sales campaign.

1. Research the market The property market can be a fickle beast, so it’s important to have a good understanding of what’s happening in your area before you list your house for sale. Mark Newell, director of housePro, a company that guides clients through the process of buying and selling property, says one of the easiest ways to get a handle on your local market is to observe at least one campaign cycle – a minimum of six to eight weeks. Knowledge is everything. You can also use online tools such as Home Price Guide to analyse recent sales data.
4. Clean and declutter Decluttering comes hand-in-hand with moving house, so if you’re thinking seriously about selling there’s no better prompt to get rid of unwanted belongings. “When it comes to selling, less is more,” says Walther. “Because vendors may have lived in it for so long they want to show off what the home
“You want to find out what the deal-breaker is,” he says. “Most vendors are on a budget, so they need to use their money effectively. Tackle the deal-breakers first and the rest comes second. “The walls and ceiling make up 90 per cent of what you’re looking at in a property, so if you repaint throughout it basically looks new,” Newell says.
has given to them, but it’s irrelevant to what a buyer wants.” 5. Improve and enhance When deciding how much money and energy to throw at your home before selling, Walther suggests asking yourself the question: “Why would people not want to buy my home?”

SPORT Rockbank struggles to field a team in centenary year
Jordan Baumgartner has committed to staying at Rockbank this season. (Shawn Smits)
Rockbank is putting out a call for players for this year’s Riddell District Football League season. Celebrating their 100th season, the Rams are struggling for numbers and are on the hunt for players. Rams president Mark Smith admitted things did not look great at this point. He said they definitely won’t field an under-19s team, while he’s unsure whether they will have the numbers to field two open-age sides. “We only had 14 at training the other night,” he said. “Gav [Sporle, footy operations manager] reckons there’s 30-odd players on the list, but we’re not seeing that on the track. “The way it’s looking we could go into our 100th year without fielding a football side.” Smith said they needed at least another 20 to 25 players.
He said they had been hurt by the departure of several players to the Western Region Football League. Smith said any players of any ability were welcome. He said because it was such a big year in the club’s history they were anxious to put sides on the park. “One of our ex-presidents, Brian Kirk, has been going through and putting the history together of the club,” he said. “He’s got articles and pictures of all the premierships in the 1960s. We were never the strongest club in the day, but we won five premierships in the 1960s beating the likes of Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Maddingley. “We’ve always been the poor country cousin in the area, but not many clubs can say they’ve been around for 100 years. The club has done well to survive, it started with a ground in a paddock.”
Minor miracle for Storm
Smith said new coach Lachie Waterman was doing a mountain of work and was using his contacts from across the country to get players on board. He said players were saying it was their toughest pre-season in a number of years and they were really enjoying it. Outside of the senior football, Smith said things were looking good for the club. The netball program is thriving, and the club’s junior arm, the Western Rams, should field two teams this season. Smith said after struggling for juniors for a number of sides, it would take time for those players to flow through to the seniors. Smith said they were also looking for sponsors. To play for the Rams contact Mark on 0402 277 267 or Gavin on 0450 947 109. Tara Murray

By Tara Murray Heading into the final round of the regular season, Sydenham-Hillside was hoping for a top-two spot in Victorian Turf Cricket Association Charles Clark Shield division 4. Instead, a win against Moonee Valley and other results falling their way handed the Storm the minor premiership. Storm vice-president and first XI player Warren Hackney said it was “something that fell in our lap”. “It’s a real bonus for all the hard work that we’ve done,” he said. “We were just happy to have a home [semi]-final.” The Storm enters the finals as the form team of the competition, having lost just one match since the Christmas break. That one-day game was a different proposition to what the Storm will face in the finals. On Saturday, the Storm completed a strong win against Moonee Valley. Hackney said Moonee Valley had a lot to play for as it looked to avoid relegation. The Storm made 6-224 in reply to Moonee Valley’s 120. Jarryd Lindsay top-scored with 88, while Ben Green hit 62 not out. The Storm will face Williamstown Congs in a semi-final for a spot in the grand final. Hackney said the side would be heading into uncertain territory. “They are an interesting one as we don’t have a competitive fixture completed against them,” he said. “It was washed out half-way through our two-day clash. “We had the chance to bowl, but didn’t get to bat against them. “They’ve been in some good form.” It’s been a good year for the Storm, with three of its five men’s sides through to finals. Like the first XI, the second XI has claimed the minor premiership. The fourth XI is also through to the finals. Hackney said they were hoping success would come in the next few weeks. “We’ve got three out of five sides in finals and we’re happy with that,” he said. “Hopefully, a couple of them can follow our women’s side that won the premiership last week.” Caroline Springs’ season came to an end with a tie against Sunshine YCW. With finals all but out of the equation, the Falcons played out a thriller on Saturday. Needing 137 for victory, the Falcons were bowled out for 136 – the same as the YCWs. Nadeera Thuppahi top-scored with 49.

NAB League
Western Jets started its season in the new NAB League Girls competition with a loss to the Calder Cannons. In the competition, which is replacing the TAC Cup, the Jets led at quarter-time, before proving no match for the Cannons, losing 5.7 (37)-1.4 (10). Isabella Grant kicked the Jets lone goal and was also named their best along with Ruby Tripodi. The Jets’ next match is against the Murray Bushrangers on March 17. Diggers Rest Bulla is in the prime position to take the last finals spot in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. The Burras are in control after day one against Woodend, with the winner to advance to finals. The Burras are 3-78 in reply to Woodend’s 125. Ladder leaders Bacchus Marsh are on top against Wallan. The Bulls are 1-66 in reply to Wallan’s 130. In the Johnstone Shield, Eynesbury had its best performance with the bat, making 9-295 against Riddell. St Anthonys made 7-304 against Bacchus Marsh.
Ballarat CA
Danza Hyatt scored his first 100 of the Ballarat Cricket Association season to help Darley be in control after day one of its match with Wendouree. Hyatt made a century as the Lions made 300 in their final game of the season. Ben Green was again among the runs for Sydenham-Hillside. (Shawn Smits)
The Falcons finished the season in sixth, four points outside the top four. In division 5, Melton Centrals claimed the minor premiership. The Centrals ended the regular season with a big win against Flemington. Having restricted
Flemington to 92, Centrals made 161. Centrals will play Jacana in the semi-finals. Melton South Royals ended their season with a loss to Footscray ANA. The Royals finished the season in seventh position, 11 points outside the finals.

Ambitious Stallions looking to take the next step Spring Hills is setting its sights firmly on promotion in FFV state league 4 west. After looking to consolidate their spot in the division last year, the Stallions have higher expectations this year, according to team manager Joe Febbraio. This is the first time the Stallions have stayed in state league 4 for a second straight season after finishing third last season. “Last year, it was about making sure we didn’t get relegated and it was obvious after six rounds that it wasn’t going to happen,” Febbraio said. “Western Eagles were the standout, so in the end we wanted the play-off spot. It was difficult, missing that spot.
“There are no play-offs this season, only a promotion spot … we are aiming for that.” Febbraio said the Stallions had put in a big pre-season under coach David Maglovski, similar to those of recent years. He said they would be finalising their squad in coming weeks, including a number of changes. Josip Loncaric, who has moved to Fawkner, is the big out from the Stallions’ side. “We have some change in players like most clubs,” Febbraio said. “A few are still training with us, but haven’t registered yet. “We’ve almost covered for the losses and we also have two or three players looking to step up from reserves.
“We’ve had a goalkeeper change and three or four other changes. We’ve added some players from higher levels who will strengthen our squad.” The Stallions played Westgate in round two of the FFA Cup on Friday night, having had a win in the first round courtesy of a forfeit by their opponents. It was all one way traffic with Westgate winning 7-1. Febbraio said before the game they didn’t have a full strength side in the match. “Westgate is a division 2 side, so it’s a big challenge,” he said. Febbraio said things were looking good across the club, with player numbers increasing.
Their women’s top side will play in state league 2 this season after claiming the state league 3 north and overall state league 3 titles last season. The women’s seconds will play in division 3. “We’re attracting players from higher divisions,” said Febbraio of the club’s female teams. “We’ve had a number of players in Vic sides. Of the total players at the club, 26 per cent are female, which is quite a lot and it continues to grow.” The Stallions’ senior men’s side will kick off their FFV state league 4 season on March 23 away to Laverton. Win continues Marsh’s march
Victory puts Lions in finals By Tara Murray Luck has fallen Melton’s way with the side claiming a finals spot in the final round of Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west. Needing a win against Brighton in the last round and other results to go their way, the Lions were the only team of those fighting for the remaining two finals berths to get a win on Saturday. That means they finished the regular season in fifth – an outcome that didn’t seem likely a couple of weeks ago. Lions playing coach Nathan Geisler said it was a top win. “We were really good with the bat and we’re hoping we can hopefully take that batting form into the finals,” he said. The Lions, sent in at home, produced their best score of the season by making 4-268 off their 45 overs. Veteran Anthony Gale was the standout, scoring his second first XI century 26 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 5, 2019
and third century overall for the season. Geisler said the players delivered the batting performance they had been looking for. “To make 270, especially in a one-dayer, is really good,” he said. “The outfield was pretty quick and we got away to a good start. “The guys coming in after we lost wickets kept the momentum going. “We had players get 20s and 30s to support Butch [Gale] and [Ben] MacRae. It was a solid team effort.” Having done the job with the bat, the Lions’ bowlers dismissed Brighton for 101. “We took our chances early and put them under pressure,” Geisler said. “They were two or three down early and that put them under pressure with the run rate.” Geisler said the club would be facing a couple of selection dilemmas heading into this week’s game – a semi-final against Werribee. Bowlers Jake Charge and Dylan Clarke, who both missed the Brighton match, are available
for this weekend. Their replacements were Gale and Geisler, who took three wickets. Geisler said it would mean an interesting week at the selection table. “We decided to take a punt and only have five bowlers and went batting heavy,” he said. “We’ll weigh up positions this week and look at putting our best line-up out.” The Lions and Werribee have met once this season, back in round three, with the Tigers winning. Geisler said they wouldn’t take much out of that game, as it was a one-dayer and earlier in the season. He said they would be underdogs heading into the finals with the freedom to play. While Werribee was due to host the semi-final, the Tigers’ ground is unavailable due to AFL commitments, so the Lions will play host at MacPherson Park. In the other finals match-ups, minor premier Caulfield will face Elsternwick and Oakleigh will host Williamstown.
Bacchus Marsh’s title hopes are alive in the Central Highlands Bowls top division after a semi-final win on Saturday. Facing perennial grand finalist Kyneton Golf in a knockout semi-final, Bacchus Marsh fired up for a good win. Bacchus Marsh won three of the four rinks on the way to a 109 (16)-82 (2) victory. For Bacchus Marsh, wins were secured by Daniel Willis (32-11), Simon Cornock (26-18) and Phil Minniti (35-22). In the other rink, Glenn Arthur lost to Adrian Plowman 31-16. The win sets up a preliminary final match-up with minor premier Gisborne Red, which lost its semi-final with Lancefield 108 (16)-91 (2). Bacchus Marsh and Gisborne Red played in the second last round of the regular season, with Bacchus Marsh claiming a 15-shot victory on that occasion. The winner of the preliminary final will tackle Lancefield in the grand final. In division 2, Bacchus Marsh won through to the grand final with a two-shot win against Woodend. Woodend will face Kyneton Red in the preliminary final after beating Macedon Ranges. Gisborne is through to the division 3 grand final and will face the winner of Bacchus Marsh and Romsey. Meanwhile, Melton will be relegated from Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 after finishing ninth. Melton needed a miracle in the final round against Sunbury to have any chance of avoiding a bottom two spot. That failed to eventuate, with Sunbury winning 79 (16)-62 (2). Tara Murray
