Eulogy for a firefighter By Esther Lauaki

Three generations of the Wright family have paid a heartbreaking – and fitting – tribute to a much-loved son. Ray Wright set out last Monday to fight the blazes at Bunyip State Park a day after losing his son, Caroline Springs Fire Brigade First Lieutenant Michael Wright, to MICHAEL WRIGHT cancer. Michael died on Sunday, March 3, after a two-year battle with bowel cancer. Through their grief, Ray, grandson Lauchlan and other family members rolled out to fight out-of-control bushfires in Michael’s honour. “It’s what he would have wanted,” Ray said. Michael’s passion for firefighting saw him bring his wife Julie and son Lauchlan, 19, into the firefighting fold. Michael was last month presented with 30 Year Service and CFA life membership medals as well as a Volunteer Fire Brigade Victoria 30 Year Gold Star. Michael underwent a first stage of treatment in 2016, but the cancer returned last year and he was hospitalised in November after his health began to deteriorate. Lauchlan said he would follow in his brave dad’s footsteps. “I always wanted to be like him,” he said. “I’m sure he’d want me to be out there, alongside Pa, and hopefully he would be proud. He was always about helping others, so I just want to be like him as well.” The Country Fire Association praised Michael’s “passion and dedicated hard work”. “Mick was a highly respected member with an extensive history of over 30 years with both Caroline Springs and Melton Fire Brigades, the Mt Cottrell Group and District 14,” it said. Tributes have flowed from friends, family and the Caroline Springs community. “It was 25 years ago that we used to stuff around at school together in Melton,” a childhood friend wrote. “I remember when you first met Julie … you were such a kind kid and grew up to be a great man.” Another described Michael as a “genuinely kind and humble man”.

Furry friends out to play Hundreds of pooches of all shapes, sizes and breeds have been welcomed at the Melton Dog Obedience club over four decades. The club will mark its 40th anniversary this month and is inviting past and present members to celebrate. President Arly Kendall said the club has been a pillar for pet owners in Melton. “The club was formed in March 1979 by a group of local citizens that said they wanted a more structured dog obedience school,” Ms Kendall said. “We now have 65 members, 10 life members – six of those who are still involved in the club – and two of the original founding members, Bill Allison and Gordon Templeton, are also still involved.” The group started at Northcott Street reserve, moved to MacPherson Park before operating at Coburn Primary School for 20 years. Two years ago, the club moved back to Northcott Street. “It’s special that we’ve returned to where it all began to celebrate this anniversary,” Ms Kendall said. A celebration will be held on Sunday March 31 at 11am. Details: bit.ly/2TpGlOw Esther Lauaki

First step towards arts centre By Esther Lauaki A regional performing arts centre for Melton is a step closer with the council budgeting $150,000 for a scoping study. Melton arts groups have wanted a public hub for a number of years and councillors last week voted to adopt funding for a needs assessment in its next budget. Cr Sophie Ramsey, a strong supporter of the proposal, believed a study was needed as soon as possible.

‘‘

A scope of these works could go into this budget

’’

- Sophie Ramsey

“The 2019-20 budget still hasn’t been determined so I would like to think that a scope of these works could go into this budget,” she said. Council city design, strategy and

environment manager Laura-Jo Mellan said two potential sites had been identified by council for a performing arts centre. “Firstly, there’s a small 0.2 hectare site in the eastern corridor adjacent to the Caroline Springs library,” Ms Mellan said. “The second site is at the Cobblebank Metropolitan Activity Centre in Ferris Road. “Currently there is no strategic evidence to indicate one or another, whether a performing arts centre is required, if so,

when, what scale it would be or how it would function. “Should council wish to proceed with the notion of such a facility, then a needs assessment would have to undertaken by council to articulate the size of the facility and the amenities that it would contain and the services to the community … that assessment would then determine a site and inform what partnerships with other organisations to deliver such a facility.”

Tile style for Melton diversity wall Melton, Rockbank and Caroline Springs school pupils are experiencing a wave of creativity. Years 4, 5 and 6 pupils from Christ the Priest, St Dominic’s and Rockbank primary schools are working together to paint tiles for a Diversity Wave Wall to be installed at Melton Library and Learning Hub from March 18. The project, run by Artists’ Collective of Melton, aims to foster artistic talent in the community.

Visual arts teacher Audrey Buttigieg-Cardona, of Christ the Priest Primary School, said the project would showcase Melton’s diversity. “Each school used the same colours however, due to the process involved, each tile will result in a completely different look,” she said. “The tiles will be assembled … to resemble a beautiful wave and will be displayed at Melton Library and Learning Hub and later on donated to the Hope Street foundation.

“The purpose of the installation is to showcase the diversity of our community; even though we all look different, we are all made the same, and when joined together we create a beautiful, unique fabric of society.” The Artists’ Collective of Melton thanked Melton council and the various community groups involved in the project.

Melton and Ballan drug action teams have been created to help prevent harm to the community. The Melton team includes representatives from Linking Melton South, Djerriwarrh Health Services, Melton council and Melton South Community Centre. The Ballan-based Moorabool drug action group includes representatives from Moorabool council, Sports Central Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh Medical Clinic and Bacchus Marsh College. The Local Drug Action Team program, run by the federal government and the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, supports building or extending partnerships to deliver drug harm prevention activities or events. There are 58 teams across Victoria. Alcohol and Drug Foundation chief Erin Lalor said teams organised primary prevention initiatives such as peer support, mentoring, education in schools, support for young people and resources to reduce alcohol harm in pregnancy. Dr Lalor said tailored, community initiatives were vital in preventing and minimising harm caused by alcohol and other drugs. “Every community is unique and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to addressing alcohol and other drug issues,” she said. Both drug action teams will receive an initial $10,000 each to develop community action plans and can apply for further funding to deliver activities. Details: bit.ly/2Jvz9bG Esther Lauaki

Tune in to Harmony Day By Esther Lauaki African drumming and henna tattooing will be part of the fun bringing the Melton community together on Harmony Day. Melton council will lead celebrations this Saturday (March 16), marking the start of Cultural Diversity Week, with a community event promoting awareness, acceptance and appreciation of citizens from all nations. Harmony Day, to be held at Morton Homestead in Taylors Hill, will feature cultural performances, multicultural food and free children’s activities. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the celebrations were a wonderful way to recognise the unique experiences, values and skills people from diverse backgrounds bring to the municipality. “Our city is home to people from over 130 nations,” Cr Turner said. “By coming together for Harmony Day and Cultural Diversity Week we can all learn and understand how every Australian equally belongs to, and enriches, this nation.” Cr Turner said the message of Harmony Day is that “Everyone belongs” in Melton. “The day is an opportunity for everyone to embrace cultural diversity, meet new and interesting people and share in a day of cultural respect for everyone,” he said. In the lead-up to Cultural Diversity Week, children were invited to design a poster showing what diversity and harmony means to them. Prizes will be awarded for the best posters in two age categories, under sevens and eight to twelve year-olds, with the winners being announced during Harmony Day celebrations. Festivities run between 11am and 3pm. Details: melton.vic.gov.au/harmonyday

Parks push to punish dumpers Park rangers are calling on nature lovers to dob in illegal rubbish dumpers at national parks and reserves. Parks Victoria western regional director Sally Lewis said littering and rubbish dumping are ongoing problems for rangers, who care for 4.1 million hectares of the state and coastline. “Unfortunately, each year our park rangers have to clean up tonnes of rubbish that is illegally dumped by people,” Ms Lewis said. “This rubbish is harmful to the environment, plants and animals, and is unsightly and potentially hazardous for visitors.” She said the highly involved process of removing rubbish cost Parks Victoria about $1 million each year and diverted rangers’ time away from managing and improving the state’s parks and reserves. Ms Lewis encouraged anyone who witnesses illegal dumping to use the Environment Protection Authority’s Report Litter app or call the Litter line. “Park rangers will pursue litterers and rubbish dumpers, and we encourage members of the public to continue to report people doing the wrong thing,” she said. Penalties for people caught littering or dumping rubbish can include fines and prosecution resulting in convictions and even possible imprisonment. Litter line: 1300 372 842. Esther Lauaki

The Tasmanian band, which includes lead singer Nick Wolfe, brother Tom on bass and lead guitarist Brodie Rainbird, will play at Macs Hotel this Saturday, March 16, on their Country Heart national tour. Nick said that the tour celebrates the band’s fourth studio album debuting on the ARIA Charts at number nine last year. “We are all stoked and really proud of this ARIA Top 10 debut,” Nick said. “We have our fans to thank for going out and buying the album.” Tom said the latest album was penned while the trio was on a songwriting trip to Nashville last year where they collaborated with a

number of writers to create a “different sound”. “We really wanted to do something different, something that would reach a wider audience and something to show that we have grown and matured as a band and as songwriters,” he said. “We feel that we achieved what we set out to.” Rainbird said the album was not a massive departure from the past Wolfe Brothers records – “it is just different”. “In the past we have always been a guitar-driven band. This time we never picked up a guitar until we were two weeks into the recording. We took the time to work on the parts of every song … the response … has been incredibly encouraging for us.” Esther Lauaki

Three-year-old Breana with her family. (Supplied)

A very special appeal A giant piggy bank, stretching three metres tall and weighing 700 kilograms, will roll into Bacchus Marsh on its way around Victoria to raise $1 million for children with life-threatening conditions. The annual Very Special Kids Piggy Bank Appeal event hits town on Thursday, March 14. Bacchus Marsh three-year-old Breana was diagnosed with DiGeorge Syndrome only a couple of days after she was born. While the symptoms can be variable, they often include congenital heart problems, specific facial features, frequent infections, developmental delay, learning problems and cleft palate. In just the first two weeks of her life Breana had open heart surgery. Mum Nicole Zois said she was aware early in her pregnancy of her daughter’s heart defects but the other issues came as a complete shock.

Breana is unable to eat, walk, talk or hear properly, her immune system does not work and she has severe breathing problems. Ms Zois turned to Very Special Kids in 2016 for free-of-charge family support services and respite at Victoria’s only children’s hospice in Malvern. “Breanna loves the hospice, when we walk through the door she is all smiles and can’t wait to interact with people,” she said. “She feels at home, which is very important for us.” Very Special Kids supports more than 900 people across Victoria, who are caring for children with life-threatening conditions. The appeal event at Bacchus Marsh Commonwealth Bank starts at 10.30am until 2.30pm. Esther Lauaki

Police investigate head-on crash The man police believe caused a head-on collision in Toolern Vale had been reported for driving recklessly prior to the smash. Investigating officers said a Subaru RX was travelling west on the Melton Highway in Toolern Vale at a high speed when it collided head-on with a Ford station wagon travelling in the opposite direction just after 10pm on Saturday. Three men, including the driver and passenger of the Ford, both male French nationals aged in their late 20s, were seriously injured and taken to hospital. Witness Nathan Fulton, who was at the scene moments after the crash, said one of the

The Subaru driver, a 32-year-old man from Redesdale, was taken to hospital with injuries to his leg and face. All three men are in a stable condition. Detectives spent Sunday morning scouring the scene and confirmed that the Frenchmen were travelling under the 100/kmh speed limit along Gisborne-Melton Road prior to the crash. Brimbank highway patrol sergeant Andy Oakley alleged the Subaru was the same vehicle reported driving recklessly earlier in the night, nearly striking a pedestrian in the minutes before the crash. “This senseless speed … it’s ridiculous, it’s

Melton and Moorabool women are being called on to join a clinical trial to improve cervical cancer screening. The Compass trial, conducted by the VCS Foundation, hopes to recruit more than 80,000 women nationwide. Bacchus Marsh Medical is one of more than 570 practices around the country where women will be participating in the trial. About 8000 more women aged between 25 and 38 years, particularly those who have had the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, are needed. Co-principal investigator Marion Saville said the trial is crucial to influence screening practices here and around the world. “For the scientific evidence generated to be strong and robust we need a significant number of participants, in this case 82,303 Australian women,” associate professor Saville said. She said nearly all cervical cancers were caused by persistent infection with certain types of HPV. “HPV testing is a better way to find lesions that otherwise may become cancers but we are also using the trial to identify the best way to refine the testing to avoid sending too many healthy women for further tests,” associate professor Saville said. Dr Noor Zannat, of Bacchus Marsh Medical Clinic, said that while many Melton and Moorabool women were already supporting the trial more local women were needed. “This trial is a powerful example of women helping other women,” Dr Zanat said. “If we can confirm the best way of screening using the HPV test, the Compass Trial will completely change the direction of how we screen and prevent cervical cancer globally. “The Compass Trial is a remarkable Australian medical milestone and I’d encourage all eligible women and practitioners to become a part of scientific history.” To join the trial: compasstrial.org.au. Melton prices steady Melton is bucking the trend of falling house prices across the state. Property prices in Melbourne’s west continue to fall, according to new CoreLogic data which shows a 1.2 per cent decrease in the past month, with a 7.2 per cent fall in the past year. However median house prices in the Melton municipality, among the state’s most affordable, have tipped the $400,000 mark – up nearly 20 per cent in some suburbs in the

year to February. Melton’s median price sits at $410,000 (up 14.5 per cent) while Melton South climbed to $411,750 (15.7 per cent), Kurunjang $432,000 (19.5 per cent) and Melton West $450,000 (13.9 per cent). Professionals Ryder Real Estate’s Mark Mordaunt said the data does not reflect what he sees happening in the market. “The market in Melton is still down although I don’t think it has suffered as much as the Melbourne market,” Mr Mordaunt said. “There might have been a couple of big sales

Medical Retina Laser Vision Correction

that scrambled the local market a bit, but generally, the Melton market is still solid. “The time houses spend on market has increased somewhat, and there are less buyers than there was in the past year, but that was coming off very unsustainable numbers.” CoreLogic Australian head of real estate Geoff White said the fact the median in Melbourne’s cheapest suburbs had increased meant certain buyers could no longer “stretch themselves” for a deposit.

12 March 2019 Melton City Council Community News

Mayor’s Message

Harmony Day

Cr Bob Turner One of the best things about living in the City of Melton is how welcoming people are. I experienced a warm welcome many years ago when I first moved to the area, and I still see the same acceptance and inclusion displayed almost every day in our City; in sporting and service clubs, community groups, and schools and public spaces, to name a few.

As part of Cultural Diversity Week, Melton City Council is pleased to invite local residents to Harmony Day 2019. This free event will be held at Morton Homestead, Taylors Hill, Saturday 16 March, 11am - 3pm, and will feature cultural performances, great food and kids activities, including:

Each year we celebrate this sense of community during Cultural Diversity Week, the highlight of which is Harmony Day. With the theme ‘Everyone Belongs’, Harmony Day is an opportunity for everyone in our City to share unique stories and experiences, while recognising that we all contribute to creating a harmonious community that is aware of its cultural diversity. Come along to meet interesting people, watch live entertainment and eat

amazing food from all over the world. So, put it in your diary and be sure to join me at this outstanding community event. Visit melton.vic.gov.au/harmonyday for more info. Council will also be hosting another Community Road Safety Forum on Thursday 21 March at the Lakeview Senior College Auditorium, 6.20pm 9pm. Aimed at young drivers and their parents, this forum supports the work of Council and local emergency services in reducing our road toll statistics. It’s full of excellent information and resources for L and P plate drivers, and is completely free. To register, visit melton.vic.gov.au/roadsafetyforum To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au

• Local service providers • and much more Harmony Day is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate our diverse and inclusive community that welcomes people from all parts of the world. Come along to this free event to share in a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. For more information visit melton.vic.gov.au/harmonyday

I’m sure local residents are as pleased as I am with the opening of the Westwood Drive road and bridge in December last year. Providing an important connection for community, access to existing local facilities, and a vital link across our municipality, this $8.7 million project has seen the redirection of around 10,000 vehicles from Caroline Springs Boulevard and Gourlay Road, and cuts commuting time in those areas. It’s also pleasing to see the three metrewide walking, running and cycling path being used so frequently, both by local commuters and for leisure activities. Speaking of our local roads, and following recent Councillor Budget discussions, I will be advocating for the replacement of roundabouts with signalised intersection and pedestrian crossings along Caroline Springs Boulevard, particularly on the corner of Rockbank Middle Road.

I believe it’s vital to make this busy area safer for both road users and pedestrians. Melton City Council places great value on residents being able to access high quality sporting and recreation facilities within the municipality, so it’s wonderful to report that the construction of the City Vista Sports Precinct, a $13 million project to promote a more active lifestyle, is progressing well. The precinct will feature two synthetic and two natural grass soccer pitches, a pavilion, commercial kitchen, pathways and landscaping, with completion expected mid-May. I welcome comments or feedback from residents who wish to contact me regarding any Council related matters. I can be contacted via email at kathy.majdlik@melton.vic.gov.au or on 0412 584 058.

MY PLACE Danny Mullan is the proud owner of the horse that won the inaugural running of the Melton Plate. He talks to Esther Lauaki ahead of the event’s 30th anniversary. What’s your connection to Melton? I’ve lived in Melton since the mid ’70s when we moved to Toolern Vale. I came up here to get involved in horse racing and run a business. How long have you lived in the area? About 45 years. What are you passionate about? I’ve always been passionate about harness racing, I’ve been involved for more than 30 years and I’ve been lucky enough to have a few good horses. You were the owner of champion pacer Victorys Phil – the first horse to win the Melton Plate 30 years ago. What did that mean for you and to the community?

What is the Melton Plate all about? It was bigger than Ben Hur. It was a race that everyone in Melton wanted Victorys Phil to win. It was meant to put Melton on the map as a harness racing town. Before the event 30 years ago … dozens of buses took people to Moonee Ponds to promote Melton Plate. Since then it’s been won by some spectacular horses over the

The Melton Plate still means a lot to our community because it’s the race that carries our name. It was designed to draw attention to Melton and it was well supported by the horses. FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is in for the thrill of the grill 8Street is a new indoor arcade of Asian eateries – it’s right under the big ferris wheel. So new is it, we’re here on opening day for the lot of them. Or, rather, it’s opening day for all the businesses, but we’re here for just one – the purveyor of Philippines eats known as GJ’s Grill. We’ve tried – once – the original GJ’s in Franklin Street, near Vic Market, with OK if not memorable results. Very long-time readers will know we have a certain, um, ambivalence about Filipino food. But we’re definitely up for trying the new GJ’s because we’re in the expert hands of CTS pal Jacqui, hubby Wes and their kids. They’re big GJ’s fans, and besides, it’s been way too long since we’ve enjoyed a catch-up. And we’re heartened by the knowledge the menu is all about grilled/roast meats and nothing at all about the braises and so on that often fill bain maries in Filipino eateries. The routine is regulation food court – pay at the counter and wait for your number – and the food is served in cardboard containers. I’m a bit nonplussed that the photos for this story make the food look unlovely and parsimonious. It’s neither – we eat well and affordably. Bennie has the beef talapa with garlic rice ($14.50). Jacqui has warned us the meat will be well done in the Pinoy style. She’s right, but it’s still good eating.

GJ’S GRILL Address: 8Street food court, Docklands. With the same garlic rice comes my lechon – crispy skin pork. It’s excellent – and sinfully rich and fatty; quite like classic Chinese roast pork, but without the seasonings. Both our meals are lifted in the zing department by serves of atchara – a liquidish pickle concoction made from grated unripe papaya. We’re powerful hungry, so also get a couple of the classic pork skewers. These are awesome and much more generous than we’ve had in the past, so the $5 each price tag is no problem. The meat is tender, succulent, perfect. It’s too rich for me, but my dining companions also share a serve of another classic – sisig ($19). This is an offalish jumble that is a bit like the topping of an HSP – without the chips! It’s tricky to gauge how GJ’s and its neighbouring 8Street establishments will go at Docklands. But if you’re there anyway, GJ’s is worth checking out for something a little different.

SPORT Bacchus Marsh looks to rewrite history books

Phil Minniti’s rink had a good win on Saturday. (Marck Wilson)

Bacchus Marsh is hoping a Central Highlands Bowls top division premiership drought will come to an end this weekend. Having not won a division 1 premiership since the 1988-89 season, Bacchus Marsh enters the grand final against Lancefield on the back of two strong finals wins. On Saturday, Bacchus Marsh accounted for minor premiers Gisborne Red in a one-sided affair. Bacchus Marsh president and skip Phil Minniti said they didn’t expect the result they had, even though they had easily beaten Gisborne Red in the second-last round of the season. On this occasion, Bacchus Marsh won 95 (16)-64 (2). “We’ve now had two really good wins against them in a row,” he said. “We thought it would be close and go down to the wire. “They finished on top and are out in straight sets so that is going to hurt them.” Bacchus Marsh started well and got out

to an early lead and was able to extend that throughout the day. In the end, three of the four Bacchus Marsh rinks got up. Daniel Willis’ rink, which was the big winner in the first week of finals, continued its good form with a 27-16 win against Tim Rogers’ rink. Rogers was the leading skip throughout the season. Minniti’s rink won 27-10 and Simon Cornock’s rink won 20-16. Glenn Arthur’s rink had a one shot loss, 22-21. The win puts Bacchus Marsh through to the grand final for the first time in five years. Its second side is also in the grand final. Minniti said it was massive for the club. “Our last division 1 premiership was in 1988-89, so we’ll be going for our first one in 30 years,” he said. “Our top two sides are through to the grand final and that’s really good for the club. “I don’t know whether that’s ever happened before for the club.”

Centrals eye off a flag By Tara Murray Melton Centrals’ good form has continued with the side through to a Victorian Turf Cricket Association Russell Pollock Shield Division 5 grand final. Entering the finals on the back of four straight wins, Centrals proved too strong for Jacana in a semi-final at the weekend. Centrals captain-coach Adam Hulett said they were stoked to be through to the grand final. It will be Centrals’ top side’s first grand final since the 2014-15 season when they lost to Grand United in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association. “We played a really good game and everyone played their roles,” he said of the semi-final clash. “Everything has been business as usual. We’re focused on preparing the same, training the same and we’ve been keeping with the plan. “We want to continue down this path.” Centrals won the toss on Saturday and elected to bat, making 245. Hulett said while happy with the score, they could have put more runs on the board. “Some things went our way and sometimes that is the luck. “But we left some runs out there. “We were bowled out with 24 overs remaining, so we could have got a few more runs if we had gone about things differently. “They bowled well under the circumstances they had.” Hashan James top scored with a well made 68, while Waduwidanalage Rangika made 40. Hulett said the most pleasing thing was it wasn’t left to one person. “It was a team performance with a lot of guys making runs,” he said. “Steve Robertson, who has been our best batsman in recent weeks, didn’t have the best day with the bat, but others stood up.” In reply, the Jaguars were bowled out for 122. Like in their bowling innings, things didn’t go their way with rain halting their momentum. Hulett said they just focused on the task at hand. “You can’t control that,” he said of the rain. “The game was in the balance and they had some good batsmen in. “We got a run-out straight after the break and a wicket not long afterwards “We stuck to our plans [and] it paid off.” Rangika was the pick of the bowlers, taking 5-34, while Hulett took two wickets.

Bacchus Marsh will face Lancefield in the top grade. Lancefield had the weekend off after winning the major semi-final the week before. The two teams split the results during the season, winning on each other’s home green. The grand final will be held at Kyneton Golf, where both sides have had good finals wins this year. It wasn’t all good news for Bacchus Marsh, with its division 3 side knocked out. In a one-sided preliminary final, Romsey won 90 (15)-70 (1). Minniti said even though the result didn’t go their way it was still a really good effort. “It’s always hard for them with the side having changes throughout the year. “To have them get that far is an exciting effort.” Romsey will face Gisborne Red in the division three grand final. Bacchus Marsh will face Kyneton Red in the division 2 grand final. Both matches will be played at Lancefield. Tara Murray

Caroline Springs George Cross started its FFA Cup campaign with an extra time win against Yarraville Glory on Saturday. In warm conditions, the Georgies looked in control for a lot of the match, but couldn’t put it on the scoreboard, with scores 2-2 at the end of regular time. A goal to James Kemal in the 112th minute gave the Georgies the win 3-2. For more on the match and Georgies off season, go to www. starweekly.com.au/sports.

It took until the final round, but Eynesbury Eagles finally got a win on the board in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield. Having made 9-295 against finals-bound Riddell on day one, the Eagles had set themselves up for the win. They were able to follow through with the ball, bowling Riddell out for 185. Max Giulieri was the pick of the bowlers with 185. St Anthonys, which finished second on the ladder, enters the finals on the back of a loss to Bacchus Marsh. The Saints face Riddell in a semi-final, playing for a spot in the grand final. In the McIntyre Cup, Diggers Rest Bulla secured the last finals spot with a win against Woodend. The Burras will play Bacchus Marsh in the first round of the finals. For more GDCA news, go to www.starweekly.com. au/sports.

Darley’s season came to an end with a loss to Wendouree in the Ballarat Cricket Association. Defending a big total of 300, the Lions weren’t able to get the job done with Wendouree finishing 8-301. Ben Longhurst was the pick of the bowlers for the Lions, with 5-68. The loss leaves the Lions at seventh, well out of the top four, after a slow start to the season. In some good news for the Lions, they have announced imports Danza Hyatt and Hasitha Wickramasinghe have re-signed for next season. Hashan James had a solid batting performance for Melton Centrals. (Shawn Smits)

Centrals will face Aberfeldie Park in the grand final over the next two weekends. Hulett said they were confident that they could continue their form.

“Two of our best games this season have come against Aberfeldie Park. “Hopefully it is third time lucky and we can get over the line.”

Centrals fall just short of a second grand final A season beyond expectations has come to an end for Melton Centrals in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north-west B one-day competition. Having claimed the T20 title in their second season, Centrals fell just short of a second grand final, losing to Plenty Valley on Saturday in a one-day semi-final. Things didn’t go to plan for Centrals during the week, with their home ground unavailable because of other scheduled games. It meant that Centrals missed out on a home final, and the eventual location of the game, in Fitzroy, not decided until the day before the game. Once the game started, it was the Bats that took control, making 6-197. Amy Hibbert was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for Centrals. Centrals captain-coach Candace Hulett said they let themselves down in the field. “Plenty Valley batted really well,” she said. “We didn’t have the best day in the field and were a bit off and that cost us the game.” Centrals’ innings didn’t start well with Hulett, their highest run scorer, out cheaply.

Centrals fought back but couldn’t get the runs, finishing 5-148. Hulett was ecstatic with how the side responded and batted out the overs. “Most of the season we’ve relied on me to make runs and I was out early,” she said. “Two girls stood up and put on nearly a 100-run partnership. “Amy Hibbert made 52 not out and Rhiannah Jordan made 41. “It’s nice to see the rewards after putting in the hard work. “Amy has come along well with the bat and batted with a lot of patience.” Hulett said the batting performance showed that the next group of players was starting to step up and take on roles within the side. She highlighted Tara Keenan as the one who had really stood up this season. “They showed that on Saturday. Other girls stood up and that is fantastic to see, hopefully that can continue.” Hulett said they were thrilled with how the season had panned out. “We thought we would have been there or thereabouts to make a final this season.

“If someone had told me at the start of the season that we would have a T20 premiership and a one day semi-final, I would have taken that every season. “It’s been a successful season in just our second season. “It’s exceeded everyone’s expectations and everyone has improved so much since the start of the season.” Hulett said the focus next season is on taking the side’s game to the next level. She said the first two seasons had been about teaching the fundamentals. “Hopefully we’ll keep all the girls together, that is the first part,” she said. “We want to continue to improve and start learning about reading the game and game structure. “They’ve now got two seasons under the belt and can start learning that next bit.” Tara Murray Tara Keenan has been a big improver for Melton Centrals this season. (Shawn Smits)

Storm seniors in chase for triple treat

Lions bowlers lead way By Tara Murray Melton’s confidence is growing in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west finals series. The Lions snuck into finals in the last round and are now just one win away from a grand final spot after beating Werribee in their semi-final at the weekend. As has been the case many times this season, the Lions bowlers set the game up, bowling the Tigers out for just 103. Lions’ coach Nathan Geisler said it was a pleasing effort. “We bowled a good line and asked questions of the batsmen,” he said. “We fielded well for the most part of it, but we put down a few chances late in the innings. “But to bowl them out for 103 is really good.” Geisler said opening bowlers Ben Jones and Ash Sweet continued their good form, both taking three wickets. 24 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 12, 2019

Jake Charge, who returned to the side, also took three wickets. Geisler said the decision to bring back Charge and Dylan Clarke, who also missed last week, for himself and Anthony Gale, was an easy one. “To be honest, as we said at selection, it was more about backing in the team that had got us to this position. “Chargey was really good yesterday taking three wickets.” The Lions finished day one at 3-76 needing another 28 runs for victory. It was a nervous few moments for Geisler and those on the sidelines early on day two when they lost two quick wickets. “We got it down to about 20 runs with five wickets in hand,” he said. “It took a while to get those runs, but we got there in the end. Despite our form this season, we believe that we bat deep.” The Lions finished 5-131 and the two teams were back in the pavilion before rain hit.

Geisler said the most pleasing thing was the contributions that came from across the board. “Jake Thornton-Gielen batted really well late and got us across the line,” he said. “Pawan Wickramasinghe and David Dickinson both batted well last night. “Dicko was that mature head at the top of the order when we needed it. Even young Adrian Monitto batted really well for his 13 not out.” Dickinson top scored with 37 which came off a massive 129 balls in nearly three hours at the crease. The Lions face Elsternwick in a preliminary final, with the winner to play in the grand final against either Oakleigh or Caulfield. Geisler said they have to keep building on what they’ve done in the past few weeks. “We’ve got to keep believing in what we are producing,” he said. “We’ve got confidence now … there’s different contributors with the bat and we know what we are going to get with the bowlers.”

Sydenham-Hillside had little trouble winning through to the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 Charles Clark Shield grand final. Having lost just one game since the Christmas break, the Storm have been the form team of the competition and showed why at the weekend against Williamstown Congs in a semi-final. The Congs were 0-47, before losing 10-85. They were eventually bowled out for just 132. Storm vice-president and player Warren Hackney said it was coach Dane Currency that set the tone with the ball. “All our bowlers were able to do the job and were led by Dane,” he said. “Dane was amazing with his accuracy and consistency and showed his class. “He took 6-44 off about 30 overs … on a batting-friendly deck.” The Storm had 11 overs to face before stumps. While they lost two wickets, they kept the run rate up and were 2-52 at stumps. “We were pretty positive and didn’t go into our skins,” Hackney said. “We lost a couple of wickets, but we put in a decent chunk of the total.” The Storm lost just one wicket on Sunday, finishing 3-135. Ben Green had yet another half century. The Storm face Maribyrnong Park St Marys in this season’s grand final. For many in the Storm playing group it’s their second grand final in three years. Hackney said they will have a challenge ahead of them. “They [Maribyrnong Park St Marys] have the bragging rights this season, we haven’t been able to beat them. “We’re still feeling confident knowing we haven’t played our best against them and we’re hitting our peak at the right time.” In what was a good weekend for the Storm, their second XI also won through to the grand final. The fourth XI side was knocked out. With their women’s side already winning their premiership, the Storm could have three senior premierships for the season by the end of the month. Tara Murray
