Stepping up the fight
(Shawn Smits)
If you think climbing 7600 steps at a colosseum such as the MCG seems like a daunting task, Caroline Springs resident Adriana Ivtingioski has a message for you: “If I can do it, anyone can”. The 45-year-old mother was diagnosed with lung cancer three years ago and had to have 33 per cent of her lung removed. “I went to the gym, I never smoked, but one day I coughed up blood,” she said. Ms Ivtingioski caught the cancer in its infancy, but said it drastically altered her active lifestyle. “I was told I couldn’t go back to the gym, I couldn’t move for five to six weeks, but I was determined to prove everyone wrong.” Ms Ivtingioski is now back at the gym and her pump classes, but has expanded her fitness to participate in charity walks. In June she’ll be taking on the MCG Stadium Stomp, where members of the public take on the 7600 steps in the bays of the iconic stadium to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Ms Ivtingioski said she was excited by the challenge. “If I can do this with 33 per cent of my right lung missing, then you can too.” Tate Papworth
Home invasions decline The number of home invasions recorded in the west has fallen by about a third within 12 months, as Victoria Police “relentlessly” hunt down offenders who commit the crimes. In December 2016, the state government made home invasions a specific offence under the Crimes Act, defined as when a person, in the company of others, commits a burglary while armed or while there is a person in the house. According to the state’s Crime Statistics
Agency, there were 91 home invasions in the west reported to police between December 2016 and September 2017, including 38 in Brimbank, 23 in Melton, 20 in Wyndham and 11 in Maribyrnong (there were none reported in Hobsons Bay). In comparison, between October 2017 and September last year, there were 61 home invasions recorded in the west – 27 in Brimbank, 21 in Melton, nine in Wyndham, two in Maribyrnong and two in Hobsons Bay. Between October 2017 and September last year, Brimbank and Melton recorded the
infocus t u r n t o
highest and second-highest amount of home invasions out of all Victoria’s municipalities. Wyndham recorded the equal fifth-highest amount of home invasions, along with Hume and Greater Dandenong, with each municipality experiencing nine home invasions across the 12 months. Acting Superintendent Adrian Healy said it was “pleasing” to see a decrease in the number of home invasions but “any incident is one too many”. “The emotional toll this type of offending has on victims is enormous,” he said.
“Over the past two years we have increased the number of proactive patrols in key hotspots – particularly in the west – and have a dedicated team of detectives responsible for this type of offending. “This hard work is paying off and we are arresting offenders in record numbers – in fact, Victoria Police is relentlessly investigating and hunting down these particular offenders. “The community can be reassured that our police will continue to work tirelessly and prioritise this issue so everyone can feel safe in their own home and community.”

‘Put down’ call after dog attack By Esther Lauaki A Burnside woman is calling for a dog to be put down after her cat was savagely attacked and died. Enrica Baldwin said she was “shaken and emotional” after learning that her beloved cat, Tiger, was attacked by a pit bull cross in her front yard in late February. “Due to that vicious attack, my cat has died,” Ms Baldwin said. “My son walked out of the house … and he couldn’t get out the door

because a dog was attacking the cat.” Ms Baldwin said the police attended and had to capsicum spray the dog and wait for the animal welfare ranger to arrive. She said the dog, which she believed was microchipped, was taken to the pound and
Melton council has notified its owners. “It could have been a child – I have an eight-year-old son who could have been out there with our cat,” Ms Baldwin said. “Regardless of if it was a cat or a child, the dog still attacked. We have lost our family pet as a result of this attack … I would like to see the dog put down.” Melton council compliance manager Phil Lovelace said the council was investigating the incident. Once the investigation was complete the council would prepare a brief to
be presented at Sunshine Magistrates Court at a time yet to be determined. “This hearing will determine the outcome of the case,” Mr Lovelace said. “Council will then consider the fate of the dog to ensure the community is safe. “Council has been in contact with the dog owner, who is aware of the prosecution being prepared about the incident.” A Melton police spokesperson confirmed officers had attended a Burnside property to subdue an aggressive dog on February 28.

Vicki Lowings with baby freshwater crocodile JJ. (Shawn Smits)
Hard times for Rockbank’s croc lady Vicki Lowings has lived with crocodiles for more than 30 years – but she’s in danger of losing the reptiles she loves. The wildlife educator moved, with three reptiles, from New South Wales to a suburban Rockbank home about a decade ago. Ms Lowings risks losing her beloved pets after Victoria’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) refused to renew her Wildlife Demonstrator Licence earlier this year, citing concerns about the quality of the animals’ enclosures. Ms Lowings is dedicated to caring for two
freshwater crocs that live indoors – Johnie, a 22-year-old female, and 11-year-old male Fovian. A 13-year-old, 2.6-metre saltwater crocodile, named Jilfia, that had been living in a bungalow at the back of her house, was re-homed to the Northern Territory last week. Ms Lowings is fighting to keep her two freshwater crocs, and will challenge the department at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in May. “I don’t know why this is happening, why they are targeting me,” she said.
“DELWP officers said that there was a safety risk, but the saltwater croc was completely locked up in an enclosure and the freshies are not a danger to humans … the room is locked and I do now have a fenced area for them.” Ms Lowings’ main concern is how the crocs will fare without her – and she without them. “Crocodiles can die from stress very easily … and the last thing I want to do is stress them out,” she said. “These crocodiles, they’re my family.”
Moorabool women are being encouraged to try something new and get active. VicHealth’s inaugural This Girl Can Week, which runs until Sunday (March 24), aims to encourage more women to give physical activity a go or return to exercise after a break. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the week was about empowering women to feel comfortable in their bodies and in public spaces – regardless of their ability, how they look or how sweaty they get. “This Girl Can has had real success in building a supportive community of women who encourage each other to get out there and get active,” Cr Tatchell said. “Our council is proud to work with VicHealth during This Girl Can Week to encourage local women and girls to smash the stereotypes holding them back from getting active and have a go. “There’ll be a range of come-and-try activities that will help women take that first and often daunting step to being active.” VicHealth chief executive Jerril Rechter urged women to get out of their comfort zone. “We want all women – no matter how sweaty they get, how red their face is or how good they are – to feel comfortable about getting out there and giving physical activity a go,” he said. Square deal is ‘more than retail’ By Tate Papworth CS Square Shopping Centre’s $45 million upgrade will be opened next month. The major extension to Caroline Springs’ largest shopping complex will feature a number of new stores. Centre manager Rod Kennedy said the upgrades, to be unveiled on Thursday, April 4, will offer more than just improved shopping. “We’re looking forward to unveiling the CS Square expansion to our customers, providing
them with more retail options and greater convenience while helping to generate jobs for the local area,” he said. “With the addition of Woolworths and Priceline, plus services like dental and optometry, we have strengthened our position as one of the leading shopping destinations within the Melton area.” Woolworths and Priceline will join The Jolly Miller Cafe, Williams Shoes and Spectacle Hub as new tenants in the centre, which will have more than 6500 square metres of additional
retail space. The Reject Shop will re-open in the Centre in a new format. Parking problems are set to be alleviated, with 240 spaces added, bringing the total number of parking spaces at the centre to 1175. While the improved facility will open next month, some upgrades have already been completed, including improvements to parenting facilities, internal lighting and landscaping and upgrades to the centre’s general amenity. The centre has also become more
environmentally conscious with more than 2500 solar panels installed to power the centre’s common areas. Other works to be completed this year include a new children’s play area and a car wash. The centre will be celebrating the upgrade opening with a raft of free events, giveaways and special retail offers from Thursday, April 4, to Sunday, April 7. Dedication is a cut above Jen Ramos turned her latest haircut into an opportunity to teach children a valuable lesson. The Goodstart Early Learning Melton educator clipped her locks to shoulder length last Wednesday as part of the World’s Greatest Shave – the Leukemia Foundation major fundraiser for its annual appeal. “I wanted to do it because I wanted to be part of the community support for the Leukemia Foundation,” Ms Ramos said. “I’ve known a lot of people who have had cancer and … being a person with a lot of hair and good health, I wanted to lend my support.” She said cutting her hair gave her an opportunity to educate Melton kids about caring for others. “I want the children to grow with empathy and awareness of other people.” Donate: bit.ly/2W3shHr Esther Lauaki

Councils to keep it clean By Esther Lauaki State funding to help councils across the west curb illegal graffiti is hitting the mark in Melton. Melton council was granted $25,000 in the last round of graffiti prevention grants which it used to deliver workshops about street art, commission public murals and run graffiti education programs in schools. Council also commissioned iconic street artist Phibs to create a large vibrant mural of bird imagery on a wall in High Street.
‘‘
Street art can be used to effectively decrease graffiti - Bob Turner
’’
Crime Prevention Minister Ben Carroll said there had since been a significant reduction in graffiti in the area. “Graffiti vandalism can negatively impact our streets, and its removal can be quite costly for councils, local businesses and residents. Our support ensures the community is better placed to deal with it,” Mr Carroll said on a visit to Melton last week. He urged other councils to apply for a grant by partnering with their local schools, sporting groups, police, small businesses or other community groups. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the mural was something the whole community could support. “We’ve seen the evidence that street art can be used to effectively decrease graffiti, crime, as well as create iconic artwork that we can all be proud of,” Cr Turner said. “This mural also provided inspiration and motivation to a group of young artists who …

developed a set of murals for the McKenzie Street Laneway.” Applications are open for graffiti prevention grants of up to $30,000 each that aim to support councils to partner with community groups and tackle graffiti vandalism. Eligible graffiti prevention projects include
vertical gardens, murals and public art, graffiti removal activities and anti-graffiti education programs that engage young people, local businesses and residents. Applications close on Friday, April 26 at 4pm. Details: www.crimeprevention.vic.gov.au/ graffitigrants

Mental health bonus for the north west More mental health support services will be available to Melton and Moorabool residents. CAREinMIND intensive support services are now available for free, online or over the phone, across the North Western Primary Health Care Network region by referral. The service offers anyone aged over 16, who has severe and complex mental illness, access to mental health nurses who work with general practitioners and psychiatrists. Primary health network chief Christopher Carter said the CAREinMIND intensive support service was designed to provide a more intensive level of care for those who don’t require or aren’t eligible for hospital-based mental health services. “The fact that the Intensive Support Service will now be available in all of our 13 local government areas is a huge achievement,” assistant professor Carter said. “The service is an integral component to our CAREinMIND stepped model of care ensuring mental health services are widely available and flexible for those that need it most.” Mental health nurses will provide clinical mental health care, medication management and care co-ordination. Youth jobless hotspots revealed By Esther Lauaki Melton and Bacchus Marsh are among the state’s youth unemployment “hotspots”, a new report reveals. The report, released by national anti-poverty group the Brotherhood of St Laurence, found more than 15 per cent of young people in Melton and Bacchus Marsh are unemployed. The suburbs of Werribee, Sunshine, St Albans and Footscray also had high youth jobless rates in the west. Brotherhood of St Laurence director Conny Lenneberg said the report smashed stereotypes
about young people. She called for a more sophisticated public debate about the emerging generation challenges. “These figures belie stereotypes about young people,” Ms Lenneberg said. “We know from our research and the experience of our services that many young people are doing it tough. “Yet young people are too often depicted in simplistic terms of consumers of overpriced smashed-avocado toast with a fascination for selfies – and that’s plain wrong.” According to the report, Victoria’s youth unemployment rate was 11.4 per cent, just
above the national rate of 11.2 per cent at December, 2018, and almost three times the unemployment rate of those aged 25 and above. “We remain especially concerned at how young people without qualifications and skills or family networks are tracking in this rapidly changing economic and social environment,” Ms Lenneberg said. “To secure the future labour force and create opportunities for decent work, we need structural solutions that drill down to local job markets and infrastructure challenges.” One program tackling youth unemployment in Melton is Employment Plus Transition to
Work. Last month, 15 students completed the program through the Key Institute. Employment Plus national director Graeme White said the program was aimed at assisting young people in Melton build self-confidence and learn skills to gain employment. “There is no guarantee that talent and intelligence will make job seeking easy or successful … not everyone gets the same opportunities,” Dr White said. “Many of our candidates have lived through significant adversity and have substantially more difficulty finding work.” Read the report: bit.ly/2W2rAOG
Top award sparks joy Electrical apprentice Emily Waras is proud to be at the top of her field. Ms Waras, from Thornhill Park, clinched Kangan Institute’s overall Apprentice of the Year last week. The road to success was bumpy for Ms Waras after she became pregnant midway through her apprenticeship. “I had a rough pregnancy and it became very hard to work in the industry,” she said. “I took six months off as part of maternity leave and that put me six months behind everyone else at my stage. “When I returned, I commenced double the studies that most normal apprentices do and I studied an extra day a week. “Once I finished that, I started night school for a post-trade certificate.” Ms Waras now works at Downer Rail and said she loves being an electrician.
“I love that I’m challenged everyday with my job and that I’m professionally respected. “If someone asks me what I do, I’m very happy to tell them I’m an apprentice electrician and I work in rail,” she said. “My training has definitely transformed my life.” She thanked her husband who she said introduced her to the trade. “I wouldn’t be in this industry if not for my husband,” Ms Waras said. “I worked as his trades assistant for two years and realised that I wanted to go down this path. “I feel like all my hard work has finally been recognised.” Esther Lauaki Emily Waras is Kangan Institute’s Apprentice of the Year. Fun running for families By Esther Lauaki Melanie Bugeja has been running to raise money for charity for nearly a decade. Now she’s urging other parents to join in the fun. Ms Bugeja will be taking on the 12.8-kilometre course in the Run for the Kids next month to help the Royal Children’s Hospital – her sixth year running. The Caroline Springs kindergarten teacher and mum-of-two said the cause was close to her heart. “I started doing it because I work with children at Creekside Kindergarten in Caroline Springs,” Ms Bugeja said. “Unfortunately, a lot of children that I work closely with need to go to hospital at some point, so the Run for Kids is something I do every year. “We get a lot of parents that are going through hard times when their children are in hospital – that’s why I want to encourage parents to come and take part in the run.” The Docklands run on April 7, a major contributor to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, is the first of a number of charity runs Ms Bugeja will tackle this year. “I combine my love of running with giving back to the community – it’s great,” she said. In Melton, personal trainer Olivia Scalzo is volunteering her time to help locals prepare for Run for the Kids. Ms Scalzo is holding weekly training sessions at Frontier Park on Tuesday nights. “These training sessions have been created to give people the opportunity to practise and train, as a lot of people don’t know where to start when they are training for a fun run or are unsure if they are fit enough,” she said. Beating the seizures
All aboard rail ‘super hub’
By Jessica Micallef The community is being encouraged to wear purple on Tuesday, March 26, to mark International Purple Day and help raise awareness of epilepsy. Amanda Anderson was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was 23 years old – but it wasn’t an ordinary diagnosis. The western suburbs resident said her first seizures weren’t typical. “We weren’t really sure what they were … I was just staring off, unconscious, so I didn’t know what was going on,” she said. Ms Anderson, 38, said that when more seizures struck, she decided to see a neurologist. “It didn’t look like typical epilepsy, as in what people think epilepsy is, which is the jerking,” she said. “I had those, too, but to start with, [I] was just staring off and I wouldn’t remember anything … it looked like I was day dreaming.” Once she was diagnosed with epilepsy, she was prescribed medication. But her husband, James Anderson, said the medication was not as effective as they wanted. “It wasn’t actually stopping it all together – it was controlling it, but we didn’t realise it at the time,” he said. “When Amanda went off medication and tried some natural therapies, it actually then showed the full extent – that she was having these full blown seizures.” Ms Anderson said: “I started to have the tonic clonic seizures, which is what you think of with epilepsy – so the jerking and you’d bite your tongue and your cheeks … they’re pretty awful.” More than four years after her diagnosis, doctors at the Monash Hospital found scar tissue on her right temporal lobe. recommended she undergo brain surgery. “I had a newborn at the time and I was like, ‘No way am I having neurosurgery’,” she said. “But the seizures got worse and eventually I said, ‘OK’. It’s a big thing because it’s brain surgery – especially since I just had a baby.” Looking back at her brain surgery nearly nine years on, Ms Anderson said it was the best

decision she could have made. “It changed everything,” she said. “I’ve only had a few seizures since then … it was definitely life-changing. “In 2014, I did a bachelor in social science psychology … now I work for a company called PS My Family Matters, so we look after the carer for someone with mental health problems.”
The highly touted airport rail link, complete with a Sunshine “super hub”, was officially signed off by the Prime Minister and Premier last week as calls grew for the Brimbank community and business to be consulted. Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said it was imperative the community was involved in planning for the super hub. “Making sure the local community and business community is part of the planning process will be critical to ensuring we are not just building a train station but taking steps in creating a world-class retail transport hub which balances place making, transport, retail and office usage into one development,” he said. The centre manager of Sunshine Marketplace, Nick Kyritsis, said the complex wanted a say in how the precinct would look. “We welcome the announcement and what it could mean for Sunshine Marketplace and the surrounding community,” Mr Kyritsis said. “We’ll continue to work closely with all levels of government, and other key stakeholders, to understand what the proposed airport rail project will mean for the people who live, work, study and shop around Sunshine Marketplace.” Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council wanted a collaborative approach. Grass greener for tree-changers By Jim Malo, Domain Melburnians are making the move to the seaside or bush and commuting to work, even as prices jump in regional areas. The strong demand in relatively affordable tree-change locations contrasts with the more expensive Melbourne housing market, where prices have been falling. Woodend recorded a 17.1 per cent increase over the year to December, taking its median house price to $720,000 on Domain data. In comparison, Melbourne’s median fell 8.4 per cent but held at a higher $833,321. Nearby Gisborne jumped 16.9 per cent to $768,750, while Kyneton, Castlemaine, Torquay and Daylesford all had double-digit growth. Gisborne resident of about nine years Rebecca Graham said she could see the town changing as Melburnians flock to her area, driving up prices. “There are more people moving out of the city,” she said, “because of cheaper land prices and there are more opportunities to build.” She said the relaxed and relatively safe lifestyle she and her family enjoyed made daily commuting to and from work at the Royal Children’s Hospital worth it. Domain senior research analyst Nicola Powell said Ms Graham wasn’t alone in her desire to find a better life in the regions. Technological advances made working from home a more realistic option for many professionals. “It’s about quality of life,” she said. “Some of these regional Victorian areas are standout performers; they’re surpassing what’s happening in Melbourne.” Jellis Craig partner Terry Gibson works in the Mount Macedon region and his staff deal

mostly with Melbourne buyers. “Seventy-one per cent of buyers come from outside the area,” he said. “The majority of that 71 per cent come from inner Melbourne and a lot of them come from the inner north. There’s sort of a domino effect.” Dr Powell said these areas all hit the sweet spot of affordable prices within a manageable distance of the Melbourne CBD. “People come
up for a weekend with a friend, and they’re living somewhere where they can’t see their neighbours, there are beautiful sunsets and all that sort of thing. They think, ‘what are we doing in Melbourne?’ “Despite the softening in Melbourne of prices it’s still unaffordable for some to enter the property market or purchase a home for their family to grow up in and it’s pushing people further afield,” she said.
“The ability to own a home on a large block is why some people are looking towards these regional areas. “I think what buyers are looking for are those areas that are close to a city so that they can commute.” About 400,000 Australians have moved to regional areas in the past five years, according to a Regional Australia Institute report released this week. The body called for infrastructure spending to make these centres even more attractive and for programs to support jobs in regional areas. Public Transport Users Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said regional commutes were possible but needed more focus from the state government. “Some of those lines are serving regional passengers as well as suburban passengers, and they really need to separate those services out,” he said. “At the moment there are some places where it’s a lot easier to drive into Melbourne. It’s up to the government to provide viable alternatives to driving.” On the Mornington Peninsula, the sea-change option still appears to be popular with Melburnians. Seaside prices are rising but at a slower pace than in the towns to the city’s north, with Sorrento and Mount Martha each up less than 3 per cent over the past year. Dr Powell said prices on the peninsula appeared to be loosely tied to the Melbourne property cycle, as Melbourne residents were buying holiday homes as well as looking for a change of scenery. “Even Sorrento, which has a median price above Melbourne’s, is still growing – only marginally, but there is obviously still demand in that market,” she said.

Ristevski admits to killing wife By Tom Cowie, The Age For more than two and a half years, everyone thought it was him. He denied it. But he was lying. Just one day before the most anticipated murder trial of the year was to begin, Borce Ristevski sensationally pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his wife Karen. The killer’s admission, so late that a jury was being empaneled, finally provides an answer to the mystery that has gripped Melbourne since Karen vanished in June 2016. Until Wednesday in the Supreme Court, Borce had staunchly maintained that he had nothing to do with Karen’s death. The couple’s only daughter Sarah, who gave favourable evidence for her father at an earlier court hearing, now has to cope with the reality it was him all along. The case against Borce was circumstantial but it pointed to no one except him. The heat increased quickly as police focused their investigation, as they often do, on the victim’s partner and the person who saw them last. In both instances, that was Borce. From the earliest days when Karen was still considered a missing person, he faced questions about whether he killed her. At a press conference appealing for help from the public, he was asked by a reporter directly: “Did you kill Karen, Borce?” The case was front-page news and the hot topic of conversation in every city cafe. There was a multitude of theories that helped fuel the intrigue: Borce reportedly told family members a stranger might have taken her; his brother Vasko claimed she had fled overseas using a fake passport; her stepson told police the marriage was fake and she had planned to leave.
Above: Borce Ristevski has pleaded guilty to manslaughter. (Eddie Jim) Inset: Karen Ristevski. (Supplied)
Even after Karen’s decomposed body was found between two logs in bushland at Mount Macedon in February 2017, Borce maintained the appearance of a loving husband devastated about what had happened to his wife. He was a pallbearer at her funeral, carrying the casket in front of a tearful family, many of whom thought he was the killer. Karen’s aunt, Patricia Gray, told police she thought Borce’s account of his movements on the day of her disappearance was “flimsy”. Even
his lawyer said he was “suspect No. 1”. Police finally laid a murder charge in December 2017. At a committal hearing, prosecutors alleged Karen was murdered in their Avondale Heights home after an argument about money before Borce drove the body up the Calder Highway to Mount Macedon. After reporting her disappearance, Borce told police she had gone for a walk and the last thing she said to him was: “I can’t talk to you right now. I am going to clear my head.”
The couple were more than $1 million in debt, with their business Bella Bleu racking up losses of $326,000 between 2012 and 2016. Police built their case on a combination of CCTV footage and pings to mobile phone towers that would show Borce had driven Karen’s black Mercedes Benz on the day of her disappearance. Borce initially kept this detail from police, one of a number of actions that would prompt a prosecutor to accuse him of withholding information and fabricating facts to “distance himself from the crime”. To begin with, he claimed to have stayed at home and then went out later for a shift as an Uber driver. Five days after Karen’s disappearance, Borce told investigators he drove the Mercedes on the Calder Freeway towards Gisborne as part of a trip to get fuel and visit the clothing store, before he turned around and went home. The trip lasted 80 minutes, he said. But police believed he was away for longer than that, calculating it at two hours and 19 minutes. Enough time, they figured, for him to spend 20 minutes at the park to hide a body. At a court hearing last July, Borce’s daughter Sarah said her mother was the more aggressive in her parents’ relationship and she would sometimes go for walks to clear her head. In the days after her mother went missing she called Karen’s phone and continually checked Whatsapp to see if she had logged in. What she didn’t know is that Borce had deactivated both his and his wife’s phones after killing her the day before. At all of his court hearings, Borce maintained a steely gaze under the spotlight that comes with a murder accusation. Through it all, he denied killing his wife. Finally, he has admitted the truth.

MY PLACE Melton and Caroline Springs has a new top cop – Local Area Commander Zorka Dunstan. The experienced police Inspector talks with Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection to Melton/Caroline Springs?
This was the third one in Melton in less than one month. These deaths on the road are all avoidable. My priority is to prevent road trauma and avoid other families and friends having to live through such unnecessary tragedy. We recently had a traffic operation over the long weekend which resulted in a number of people being caught speeding, driving whilst on drugs and/or alcohol – and the list continues. My other priority is to work with community members to prevent children and adults from offending. I am passionate about this cause.
I am the newly appointed Local Area Commander for the Melton Police Service Area that covers the Melton Shire and houses the Melton and Caroline Springs police stations. I have grown up in the western suburbs, having lived in the Brimbank area for most of my life and currently reside there with my family. How long have you lived/worked in the area?
What are some of the things you love most about your line of work?
Tell us about your role at Melton. My role as an Inspector is extremely varied. My main responsibilities include stakeholder engagement with key community members to promote collaboration for current and emerging issues impacting the community. I am also responsible for the management of all the uniform members in the Melton and Caroline Springs police stations. This can include the management of larger-scale operations and events. The role is challenging and it keeps me on my toes. I am supported by
(Dennis Manktelow)
I had previously worked in the neighbouring areas of Sunshine and Footscray, which was some time ago. I have most recently worked at the Priority Communities Division, having managed projects that have impacted the Melton community. These include the Community Safety Network events such as the recent Melton and Caroline Springs community days and the Social Cohesion program involving the Youth Basketball program. a great team and feel extremely privileged to be doing this role. What is your background in Victoria Police? I spent almost a decade at the Critical Incident Response Team. I was a trained negotiator, having dealt with siege and hostage situations. Whilst at the CIRT, I also provided dignitary protection to key figures including former prime ministers, ex-Victorian premiers and the most memorable being the Dalai Lama. The Critical Incident Response Unit was
where I developed my tactical skills, which complemented my varied uniform operational service. I eventually got promoted to Inspector in 2015 where I worked at the Priority Communities Division. Whilst there, I was involved with the development of projects specific to the Aboriginal community and the African Australian Community Taskforce. What are your priorities for Melton? In my first week as the local area commander, there was a fatal collision in the Melton area.
I love the variety and meeting people. One day I could be at a large incident and the next I could be at an event getting coerced into some type of traditional dance. It is different every day. What’s something people don’t know about you? I used to play the piano accordion – not very well. I couldn’t speak English until I started primary school, despite being born in Australia. What would you like to see improved in policing in Melton/Caroline Springs? I am hoping to improve community confidence in police. Policing is so challenging and the members do such an amazing job in sometimes difficult circumstances. I am wanting to promote a police service where our members maintain professionalism, are respectful and empathetic to better serve the community.

Rana, Nick and their siblings worked alongside mum and dad, learning the ropes, gaining understanding of good food and what makes customers come back for more. Rana went on to manage her own business in neighbouring Albury. Now the duo are putting their experience to good use in their new venture in Melton. “We offer busy people a chance to pick up a freshly cooked chicken – we use free-range Lilydale chickens, because only the best will do – as well as a range of homemade salads,” Rana says. “Salads are freshly made from scratch every day – sometimes twice a day – and they’re packed with health and deliciousness. Take home a combo for the family and they’ll feel very happy – and no big clean-up after the meal. “We’re different to many takeaways – everything we serve is healthy and nourishing.” But it’s not just the takeaway market Rana and Nick want to attract. The team also cater for occasions that might include corporate and private functions, a party, an office gathering or sports clubs. “They can be confident, too, that our food will be appreciated and meet the health/delicious brief that most people look for nowadays,” Nick says. “And who doesn’t love a hot, juicy chicken that’s free-range and cooked perfectly?
“We’ll also be getting a coffee machine so we can offer more to locals.” Rana and Nick say they have a very dedicated team, some working long days to ensure everything is perfect. “Our team is trained in the same way we were. They share our family’s values of offering the cleanest and best. We give to our customers only what we would happily eat ourselves,” Rana says.
People get to taste free at the open day this Saturday Rana and Nick are excited right now to get to know the locals and their routines so they can best meet needs. They’re also excited to see Melton Chicken Stop grow and be recognised for its family recipes, used for salads and chicken-stuffing. In fact, people can get to taste all this free at the open day, on this Saturday, March 23 between noon and 2pm, with a jumping castle, face painting, balloons and fairy floss especially for the kids. “We want people to see how we operate, so we’re setting up a tasting table so they can try our salads and chicken, on the house. We invite everyone in to say hello and have a taste and see.” Delivery is also available through Menulog. Melton Chicken Stop, Shop 2, 5 Claret Ash Boulevard, Melton West. Opens 10.30am-8.30pm Monday to Saturday. Inquiries: 9068 4069 or Facebook and Instagram.

Net gain for Melton netball T
he forward-thinking committee of Melton Netball Association is trialling a Rock-Up mixed competition, with the aim of attracting new players who might not yet be ready to commit to the regular competition. The association’s treasurer, Janet Govett – a former player and high-level coach herself – explains how Rock-Up works: “Rock-Up, which runs for a 10-week period at this stage, allows players at least 14 years old to register online, either as a team or individual. Only three males can play on a team, while individual registrations are placed by the ‘system’ into a team. Then they just ‘rock up’ to play. “The advantages of this approach is that it gives newbies a chance to see if they want to join our regular comp. Registration fees are much cheaper, and uniform requirements are more relaxed,” Janet says. “It’s great for getting mum and dad and the kids playing in a team together, or just a gang of teens or young mums wanting a healthy outlet.” Janet says Melton Netball Association also provides pathways for those interested in becoming an umpire. “We run courses for umpires to move up in the ranks where they can find themselves umpiring games for the Victorian or Australian Netball leagues. “As an umpire tester, I and another member get called on to test aspiring

umpires from Melton and Bacchus Marsh – it’s very rewarding to see them succeed.” Netball, an ever-popular sport for girls and more and more boys, caters for kids as young as six, who play in the Net-Set-Go program.
It’s great for getting mum and dad and the kids playing in a team together “We run this program, which goes for just 30 minutes, for kids aged six to 10. It teaches them about the rules, fair play and tactics so they’re ready to step up into the regular competition. “It’s wonderful to watch them learn and switch on to the game – it’s probably my favourite part of netball now.” Affiliated with Netball Victoria, the Melton association has a committee of long-serving members and younger people who value seeing netball thrive in their town. They don’t stand still – right now they’re hoping to see an Under-11 comp form. Melton Netball Association gathers at 5pm on Tuesdays at Melton Indoor Recreation Centre on Coburns Road. The Westside stars of exhausts W
estside Exhaust and 4x4 is a new name in the Ravenhall automotive scene. Known as Playtime Auto for the past 10 years, the business has welcomed in a new partner, Luke Macpherson – so he and original owner Trevor Hill decided to mark the union with a new name. Luke says that while there’s a new name, it’s still very much a business staffed by a crew with more than 30 years’ combined experience – and the belief that any job can be done is as strong as ever.
We love to have a chat with our customers about their vehicles Luke has worked in and around the exhaust sector for many years, including as manager of Playtime Auto for seven. He has a particular passion for four-wheel driving. “In my various stints working in exhaust and 4WD workshops, I’ve built up a solid reputation and a good client base,” Luke says. “I thought it was time to take the next step – from being an employee to being an employer running my own business. “With our complementary skills, it just made sense to partner up with Trevor to deliver our skillset to locals looking for top-notch workmanship.” Westside Exhaust and 4WD supplies a wide range of exhausts, from standard to sports. And it specialises in custom exhaust and pipe work to suit every type of vehicle.
Above: George at work on one of the vehicles. Right: Luke MacPherson attends to an exhaust system. (Pictures: Shawn Smits)
It’s also a 4x4 specialist, offering everything from front and rear bullbars and UHF radios and antennas to suspension upgrades and driving lights. Luke and Trevor stock and use all the renowned industry brands, including: MCC4x4 bullbars; Dobinsons 4x4 suspension; GME radios; Lightforce lights; Terrain Tamer recovery gear; Redarc electrical; Thunder electronics; Narva lights and accessories; Xrox bullbars; Idrive
throttle controller; JW speaker lights; Ice ignitions; Hella lights; Ctek battery chargers; Ignite 4x4 exhausts; Xforce exhausts; Redback Extreme exhausts; Redback sports exhaust; Pacemaker exhausts; Zetti exhausts; Genie extractors; Remus sports exhausts “We take a lot of pride in our work, we’re an honest team and eager to accomplish whatever job is in front of us,” Luke continues.
“We love to have a chat with our customers about their vehicles and they get free quotes and a service that is well-respected.” Westside Exhaust and 4WD, Factory 2/25, Westwood Drive, Ravenhall. Opens 8am-5pm Monday-Friday and 8am-noon Saturday. Inquiries: 8358 5511 or after hours on Facebook.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir spices it up with Dukkah Dukkah is a bright new arrival on Vernon Street. The long dining room has been done up a treat. It’s casual and elegant, spacious and warm. There’s a lot of old, gorgeous wood in use. Bennie and I choose the easy option of getting stuck into the share platter, which sells for $48 for two people. It starts with three dips, all with clear and concise flavours – and all offering something different from most Mid-East eats emporiums. Lemon turmeric hummus with Egyptian dukkah, fel-fel (chargrilled capsicum cream cheese with sweet paprika, walnuts and chives) and beet labneh (caramelised beetroot and yoghurt with black sesame seeds) come with good toasted bread that runs out just before we’ve slurped the last of the dips. But as Bennie quips, more bread and we’d be stuffed before the mains arrive. And the share plate mains? They are splendid. Two fat, exemplary cigars of lamb kofta – dense, perfect and with just the right mild level of Mid East-style seasoning. Two skewers of chicken shish tawook with capsicum and red onion. The chook chunks look sufficiently large to promise dryness, but such is emphatically not the case. In other words, superb. Our meaty skewers were accompanied by very nice quinoa tabouli and rice pilaf in exactly the right proportions.
Dukkah address: 23 Vernon Street, South Kingsville Phone: 9399 3737 As we gleefully devour all, father and son banter a bit about the merits of our meal – and its price. Bennie reckons $48 is a bit steep, with the sort of deal he gets at his beloved Footscray Best Kebab House colouring his views profoundly. I beg, very much, to differ. Dukkah is a quite different sort of place and the quality – especially of the meats – is above that of the majority of kebab shops. And the combined regular cost of our dishes from the menu would be $54. No such quibbling is possible with the Dukkah desserts – and we try both. Om ali – puff pastry pudding with coconut, cinnamon milk, hazelnut and sultanas served in a tagine – is the Egyptian version of bread-and-butter. It’s wonderful, rich, quite heavy. This beauty – which could easily serve two – clocks in at a very cheap $12. Kunafa (layers of shredded angel hair pastry, mango and cream topped with pistachio dust and rose petals) is lighter, a good deal more playful – and just as tasty. It, too, is priced keenly at $11. Melton comes out firing By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds have set the minimum benchmark of what they expect in this year’s Big V women’s division 2 competition. The Thoroughbreds came out of the blocks on Saturday night in their season opener against the North East Bushrangers with a performance that pleased coach Lauren Olcorn. The Thoroughbreds set up the 78-44 win defensively, making it hard for the Bushrangers to apply any scoreboard pressure. In the first half, the Bushrangers scored just 11 points, and added just two in the second quarter. Olcorn said they had focused on shutting the Bushrangers down in their attacking end. “It doesn’t happen often,” she said of the two-point second quarter. “We were surprised by that score line. “One of our goals was defense. To make sure that we were aggressive with our intention and that would lead to scoring for us. “We stuck to those defensive goals, especially in the second quarter.” With a big lead at half-time, the Thoroughbreds continued to push and worked hard on their new combinations. While they had a bit of a lull in the second half, Olcorn said she was pleased with how they worked through it and came back out on top. “We were able to find our feet again,” she said. “We have depth on the bench and were able to bring on other players.” Stacey Procak top scored with 20 points in her first game for the Thoroughbreds while
her sister Allanna Procak, chipped in with 18 points. Olcorn said the two showed a lot of leadership in their club debut. “They stepped up on the court and led by example,” she said. “Jenna Conroy [16 points] had an interrupted pre-season and she was able to step on the court last night and show some leadership as well.” All available players got on the court and the Thoroughbreds will add more depth to the squad in the coming weeks. Rebecca Marshall, who started the game, played just three minutes due to illness, while Chantelle Paris-Webb and Caitlyn Spence missed the game through injury. Olcorn said the game had set the bar of what they expect for this season. “Looking to push forward, we won’t expect anything less,” she said. “We will look to work through the lulls and make sure they don’t happen.” The Thoroughbreds face Wallan Panthers this weekend. Olcorn said it would be good to test themselves against a side that has been one of the benchmarks the past two years. It was a good start all round for the Thoroughbreds as their men’s and youth league men’s division 2 sides both won. The men’s side defeated the Bushrangers, 87-75. Import Chris Johnson top scored with 22 points, while Wol Wol Ngong scored 18 points coming off the bench. The youth league side beat Chelsea Gulls, 82-75. Max Beaumont scored 30 points.

SPORT Sydenham-Hillside leads the way in title race The first part of the job is complete for Sydenham-Hillside. Now the Storm players are keen to go on and finish the job this weekend in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 Charles Clark Shield grand final. Looking for its first VTCA first XI premiership, the Storm claimed first-innings points after two days of play in the grand final against Maribyrnong Park St Marys. With another two days to go, the Storm has a lead of 27 runs. The players – including vice-president and first XI player Warren Hackney – are aware the match could come done to an outright result. Hackney said they were thrilled to have secured first-innings points while not necessarily playing their best cricket. “We’ve still got a few wickets in hand, so we can hopefully build on that,” he said.
“Hopefully, we can stretch that lead out to at least 60 to 80 runs next weekend. That lead could be useful.” Maribyrnong Park St Marys won the toss, elected to bat and was in trouble at 2-8. After steadying, it posted 204. Hackney said it wasn’t the Storm’s best bowling performance, but to bowl them out within 53 overs was a good result. “We got off to a good start, before we lost our way a little,” he said. “They got a bit more than what we would have liked.” Timothy Grech and Dane Currency took three wickets each for the Storm. The day wasn’t over for the Storm players, who had to face 25 overs. They got a third of the runs needed for the loss of one wicket. Much of that scoring was done by Dylan Knight, who made 56.
Hackney said the side lost wickets early on day two before consolidating. In-form batsman Ben Green, who made 69, was dismissed with his side 23 runs short of first-innings points. Hackney said they were still confident there would be no issues in getting the runs. “We still had a few decent batsmen,” he said. “Guys have been popping up all season. Jarryd Lindsay came in late in the day and worked the ball around. It’s wasn’t unexpected, as he’s done it a few times this season.” The Storm finished the day 7-231 and with a lead of 27. Lindsay will resume on 39. It wasn’t such a good weekend for the Storm’s second XI, which has some work to do in its grand final against Caroline Springs. The Storm is 6-80 in reply to Caroline Springs’ 250. Tara Murray
Saints pray for good luck By Tara Murray St Anthonys is hoping it’s third time lucky in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts. Having won through to their third grand final in four seasons, the Saints are hoping luck goes their way this time around. The Saints defeated Riddell in their semi-final, but it didn’t come without a scare. Saints’ captain-coach Cameron Clayton said it could have been a much different result. “We were in trouble at 6-84 and managed to get to 235 which is a big score in finals,” he said. “We were happy at the end of the day.” Paul Scott top scored with 65, while Andrew Finn scored 64. Importantly, the last partnership between Jason Craven (24) and Jason Orr (16 not out) put on 38 runs. Clayton said those four were the keys to putting in a decent score. “They saved us,” he said. “We ended up facing 76 overs, so we basically batted out our overs.” The Saints qualified for the grand final when they bowled the Bombers out for 143. Clayton said they got off to a slow start before pegging the Bombers back. “We bowled really tight and that set it up for us,” Clayton said. “They got off to a good start and were about 1-50. We had bowled about 48 overs before tea which was really good. “We kept it tight and restricted them and they lost some wickets in clumps.” The Saints bowlers shared the wickets around, with Clayton leading the way with three wickets. The Saints now face Bacchus Marsh, which upset minor premiers Rupertswood. The Saints and Bulls played each other in the final round of the season, with the Bulls chasing down 304 on that occasion. Clayton said that loss was a bit of a wake-up call for the side heading into finals. “The best team will come out on top,” he said. “I’m assuming they will have the same side in again. “Hopefully we will get the win.” Clayton said he hoped it was their turn after so many near misses in recent years. Last season they lost the decider to Wallan. “It’s the third time in four years and it’s about time we won one,” Clayton said. “We know where we went wrong last season and we spoke about it. “If we’re good enough we’ll get there.” The Saints’ fifth side faces a similar situation this weekend as they also host Bacchus Marsh in a grand final. The Saints second XI was knocked out after losing a semi-final.

Centrals fly in flag showdown Melton Centrals couldn’t have asked for a better first weekend in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield grand final. Batting first, Centrals put themselves in a winning position against Aberfeldie Park with two days remaining. Centrals’ captain-coach Adam Hulett said his side enjoyed a good weekend. Centrals batting has been a strong point all season – and that was the case again in the grand final. Centrals batted for most of the first two days, making 379 in nearly 140 overs. “We definitely would have taken it at the start of the weekend,” Hulett said. “We won the toss and elected to bat. The plan was to bat for as long as possible. There’s a compulsory closure of the innings after 160 overs. “It was an excellent performance with the bat.” Hulett said the side had an even spread, with a number of players contributing. Steve Robertson, a standout all season, made 97 and Hashan James made 57. A number of other players made 20s and 30s. The standout, though, was Connor Poulton, who scored 88. Hulett said the 16-year-old was impressive. “He came in the fifth over and was the last man out,” he said. “He batted for 135 overs. That’s been his role [anchor the innings] all season and he’s the youngest in the team. “He’s the most mature mind, cricket-wise, in the team. I spoke to him before the game about his role. “I don’t think many adults could have done what he did. “If we get over the line, he has contributed a lot to it.” Aberfeldie Park had 18 overs to face on Sunday afternoon. It was slow going, with Aberfeldie Park to resume next weekend on 0-29. Hulett said Centrals had a couple of chances to get an early wicket. “There were a couple of play and misses and we needed a bit of luck, but that didn’t happen,” he said. “We’ll back our bowlers in next week to get the wickets. “There’s still a lot of work to do to get the 10 wickets as quickly as possible.”

Bacchus Marsh holds its nerve to claim twin flags Bacchus Marsh revelled in a double dose of grand final joy in Central Highlands Bowls Division on Saturday. On a day to remember for the club, Bacchus Marsh claimed the division 1 and division 2 titles within an hour of each other. President Phil Minniti said the club was unsure whether both teams had ever been in grand finals in the same year, let alone both winning. The division 1 side claimed victory against Lancefield. Minniti said the side was able to hold its nerve when it counted late in the 97 (16)-83 (2) win. “We did get out to a 20-shot gap, but they picked up two five shots in a row to bring the margin back,” he said. “Our experienced players stood up and no one panicked. We made sure we did the

basics right and settled down and focused on not dropping another end like that.” Minniti, Daniel Willis and Glenn Arthur skipped the winning rinks for Bacchus Marsh. Minniti said there wasn’t a standout in the
win, with all involved contributing when they needed to. The division 1 title is the club’s first in that division since 1989-90. Before that, the last title was in 1974. “It’s been a long time between drinks,” Minitti said. “It’s amazing that we haven’t had more success in that time. We’ve had some quality players … it’s disappointing not to have won more flags.” The division 1 premiership came an hour after the division 2 side beat Kyneton Red 70 (14)-67 (2). Barry Stenholdt and Ross Greening skipped the winning rinks for Bacchus Marsh. Minniti said they were aware late in the division 1 final that their division 2 side had taken home the premiership. It was that side’s second premiership in three years.
Melton loses a thriller By Tara Murray Melton’s grand final dreams came to a heartbreaking end with a three-run loss to Elsternwick in its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west semi-final at the weekend. In a match that could have easily gone either way, it was Elsternwick that got the last laugh and a grand final spot. Lions’ coach Nathan Geisler said it was disappointing to get so close. “We’ve had home semi-finals the last two years, but haven’t been able to go on,” Geisler said. “The boys are devastated to get so close after a tough day in the field yesterday. “I also say that if you bat your overs you will win and we almost pulled it off. “I’m proud of their efforts over the last two weekends.” Elsternwick made 228 on day one to put themselves in the box seat. Geisler said it was a tougher day than they would have liked. “We dropped a couple of catches early and they should have been 3-30. “They got away from us late in the day, so making 230 we knew would be tough.” The Lions took the challenge on and in the end it came down to the final over. The Lions needed 10 runs for the win, they fell four runs short of victory, run out for 225 on the final ball. Geisler said they lost too many wickets before the tea break. “You lose one or two less before tea and you get into a partnership. “To get to within three runs [a draw was enough], it’s disappointing as we got into a winning spot.” Ben MacRae top scored at the top of the order with 64 but it was the middle and lower order that got them within striking distance. Jake Thornton-Gielen made 41, while Adrian Monitto made his highest first XI score with 46. “I’ve said all season I believe we have good batting depth and we’ve shown that now,” Geisler said. “Adrian has turned 17 today [Sunday] and he nearly got us over the line. It was a terrific effort.” The loss ends a season that Geisler best described as inconsistent. “We were alright before Christmas, but then we couldn’t get a win afterwards. “We lacked that consistency. We were three runs away from a grand final. “I still see making a semi-final as a success.” Geisler said the past few weeks showed what they can do when they perform. He said ideally they would love to add another top class batsman to help take them to the next level. It was a tough day all round, with the Lions’ fourth XI side losing their preliminary final against Plenty Valley. 34 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 19, 2019
“We knew the result and were all saying we wonder if we can get both sides up,” he said. Minniti said the premierships meant a lot, with the future of the club uncertain. It has been in talks with The Avenue, which is also based in Bacchus Marsh, about merging. Minniti said Bowls Victoria was expected to make a final call on the merger in coming weeks. “It was a big night at the club,” Minniti said “If it’s our last year in the CHBD, going out winning division 1 and division 2 is fantastic. “If we play CHBD next season, we will have two sides in division 1, which is always a challenge.” In division 3, Romsey smashed Gisborne 96 (15)-57 (1). Bulls primed for a grand effort By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh got through a tough semi-final test to book its spot in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts grand final. While the Bulls had the upper hand for much of the game against Diggers Rest Bulla, they had to fight for the win. Bulls’ coach James Lidgett said it was a really good game. “You can’t get any better than a grand final,â€? he said. “We got challenged a bit ‌ we’re ready to play some hard cricket and are ready to go for the grand final.â€? The Burras made 183, with Upul Fernando continuing his good form by making 55. Lidgett said both teams were able to stick to their plans on day one, but he thought his side was slightly on top. Madushanka Ekanayaka and James Bailey took four wickets each. Lidgett said both played important roles. “It’s the best I’ve seen James bowl this season,â€? he said. “He had nearly a 12-over spell at the end of the day and was hitting the right areas. “That’s the best team performance from Eka. While he didn’t get the rewards early on, he kept the pressure on and he got them at the end of the innings.â€? The Bulls were never in trouble in their innings, finishing 3-184 with 19 overs remaining. Lidgett said it was a patient batting innings.
“We built partnerships, even if the scoreboard doesn’t show it, he said. “We didn’t lose two wickets in a row and made sure we had wickets in hand at the break, so then we could attack. The star with the bat was Lidgett himself, who hit 118 not out. Lidgett said the main thing was being there at the end of the match. “I didn’t want to leave the job for someone else, he said. “It’s what I say to the boys about finishing off. The Bulls will face Gisborne in the grand final. The Dragons needed less than a day to beat Romsey after a brilliant bowling display. The Dragons dismissed Romsey for 102 before making 1-130. The last time the two grand final teams met, the game was washed out. Lidgett said the two teams hadn’t had a completed two-day match in two seasons, with last season’s match washed out, also. The Bulls won the one-day clash between the sides earlier this season. “They’re a good team and I’m not surprised that they got through, said Lidgett of Gisborne. “It’ll be a good game of cricket. I know they were down watching us and they probably enter the final in better form, but that doesn’t matter. It was a good day all round for the Bulls, with their seconds and sixth XI winning through to grand finals. Their under-17 team claimed the premiership on Sunday morning. “It’s really exciting and there’s a real buzz around the club, Lidgett said.
