Parade rich in colour Rockbank Primary School celebrated diversity and tradition last week. Pupils donned cultural costumes for a colourful parade in honour of Harmony Day last Friday. Principal Darryl Spiteri said the children were proud to showcase their differences. “We celebrated Harmony Day as a school with a parade and activities in the classroom that reflect our cultural diversity,” Mr Spiteri said. “It was wonderful to see so many parents present and to see so many children wearing national costumes or the colour orange, which is the official colour of Harmony Day. “Harmony Day is in its 20th year and is celebrated to reinforce with children that Australia is a highly successful multicultural society that contains many different nationalities and religions. “We can learn a lot from the ways children interact with others, especially in the ways that they don’t see race or colour.”

Crime stats on the rise By Esther Lauaki Moorabool’s crime rate is up as breaches of court orders, deception and theft offences climb. Data released last Thursday by the Crime Statistics Agency revealed a 13.7 per cent increase in offences recorded in the past year to December to 2439, up from 2146. The main drivers behind the spike were significant increases in property and deception offences (1196 to 1399), drug offences (77 to 98) and justice procedures offences (290 to 437).

Theft in Moorabool jumped 16.6 per cent from 674 to 808, deception more than doubled from 46 to 106 and drug use and possession rose 39 per cent from 53 to 87. Breaches in court orders also climbed to 364 from 202 – the highest number recorded at this time in nearly a decade. Contrary to the overall increase in Moorabool crime, crimes against the person are down from 438 to 391 (12 per cent) driven by a 43 per cent drop in sexual offences to 53 and dangerous and negligent acts decreasing by more than 52 per cent.

Meanwhile, Melton’s crime rate has risen by half a per cent as police continue to focus on property and deception offences which have reduced by 3 per cent. Drug dealing and trafficking was a driver for the slight increase with offences up from 61 to 84 (27 per cent) in the past year. Statewide, crime is up about 1 per cent. Police Minister Lisa Neville said the figures reflect a “great level of stability”. “The important thing that this shows us is the work that Victoria Police has been doing in areas such as drug offences

and justice procedures,” Ms Neville said. “Those figures reflect the additional work our officers have been doing to disrupt trafficking and cultivating of drugs as well as family violence.” She said there was a reduction in crimes against the person and also a drop in property crime. “We’ve got the lowest victimisation rate that we’ve had in 10 years,” Ms Neville said. “We’ve also got the lowest burglary rate in a decade.” Details: www.crimestatistics.vic.gov.au

Python thief carpeted for ‘amazingly stupid’ act A Hillside man who stole a rare snake from a reptile display in Melbourne has been convicted and fined. Matthew Gatt, 23, appeared before a Melbourne Magistrate last Thursday and pleaded guilty to theft and possessing protected wildlife. He was fined $8000 with conviction. The court was told that Gatt stole a two-year-old carpet python from a display at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in December. He snatched the animal soon after he posed for photos with three snakes over his shoulders. Police found the reptile in an enclosure at Gatt’s home three weeks after it was taken. Magistrate Denise Livingstone described his offending as “amazingly stupid”.

“It is an outrageous offence and it is committed over a period of time,” she said. The snake’s owner, Raymond Hoser, who breeds snakes and uses them for educational displays, told Star Weekly after the court proceedings said he didn’t sleep for days after the theft, worried about the reptile’s safety. He said the stolen python was “extremely rare” because of large scales on its head and could be worth up to $30,000. – with The Age

Hospital noise an earful

Melton’s new heart looks the part

By Esther Lauaki Bacchus Marsh residents say they are “close to breaking point” after being subjected to a high-pitched whining noise for nearly two months. The constant noise is coming from the new air filtration system that is part of the recent $9 million operating theatre revamp at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital. Marie Hamilton, whose property backs on to the hospital grounds, said the noise was unbearable. “We have to sleep with earplugs in and fans going so that it drowns out the sound,” she said. “You could be in a good mood when you wake up, but then you hear that noise and it’s like a mosquito buzzing in your ear. “I’m a writer and a teacher and when I’m trying to work in my office at the front of the house, I can’t work.” Another resident, who asked not to be named, said residents were becoming depressed because of the noise. “It’s a whining noise and increases in pitch about seven or eight times in a space of a minute,” she said. “It then holds the high pitch and climbs back down through those notes. “It’s constant 24/7. “We are very well aware that we live next to the hospital and we are very supportive of this development for the community. “[But] At some point during the development of manufacturing of equipment, something has gone very wrong.” She said a number of residents had laid complaints with Djerriwarrh Health Services, Moorabool council and the Environmental Protection Authority. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Belinda Scott, who has met residents to discuss an action plan, said the hospital had engaged an acoustic specialist to assist with reducing noise.

“Djerriwarrh Health Service has taken remedial measures to lower noise levels,” she said. “We have been meeting with the neighbours to hear their concerns and provide updates. “We apologise to our neighbours for any inconvenience caused and we are working hard to resolve this problem … and are working towards a positive outcome for all parties.” Melton council said it had passed resident

complaints on to the EPA. “Council officers have spoken to staff at the hospital as well as the residents regarding the noise issue and have passed all details on to the EPA for them to undertake an investigation and any follow up action,” a council spokesperson said. The EPA said members of the public can report noise or other types of pollution by calling 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842).

The heart of Melton has been transformed with a raft of upgrades to the town centre. The $13.1 million revamp, delivered by Melton council in five stages since 2015, was officially opened last week. Improved pedestrian and bicycle access, an amphitheatre upgrade, courthouse cafe decking, landscaping and public lighting are among upgrades to High Street’s streetscape. The development includes carparking and public toilet upgrades and a revamp of the entire Wallace Square precinct. Melton MP Steve McGhie said the new facilities would make a “huge difference” to the community. “I’m pleased to see the revitalised town centre complete,” Mr McGhie said. Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek said the completion of the Melton town centre project meant residents had a great place to live, meet and work. “The Growing Suburbs Fund is specifically designed to deliver practical outcomes for communities,” Mr Somyurek said. “The Melton Town Centre will help contribute to the economic and social prosperity of the people of Melton and be a point of connection for future generations.” The project attracted $3.7 million in state funding with the rest coming from the federal government and Melton council. Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner Many of you will remember Council’s Build Melton Hospital campaign which ran in the lead up to the Victorian state election last year. It’s clear that a local public hospital that meets the medical needs of residents of all ages is a critical part of our ongoing and future growth.

Nominations for the 2019 City of Melton Business Awards are now open! Businesses can nominate themselves or residents can nominate their favourite businesses within the City of Melton. You can nominate in the following categories: • Best Micro or Home-based Business

Prior to the election, the Andrews’ Labor Government pledged $2.3 million towards the development of a business case for a new hospital within our City, We are calling on the State Government to allocate this funding in the 2019/20 budget so planning can commence. We are also asking that the Government honour their commitment to purchase land in Cobblebank, with funding through the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution Fund.

• Best Creative Industries Business Award

I have written to the new Health Minister, Jenny Mikakos MP, requesting a meeting to discuss the issue in detail and I look forward to sharing more news about this important project in due course. I have recently had positive discussions with other Ministers and various Members of Parliament with regards to our other priorities. Last week, I met with the Hon Jacinta Allan, Minister for Transport Infrastructure to discuss the Western Rail Project and electrification of the Melton line and with the Hon Gabrielle Williams, Minister for Prevention of Family Violence about the need for a Support and Safety Hub (Orange Door) in the City of Melton. To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au

Investment in sports facilities and the arts have been long standing priorities for me, which is why I once again requested the following proposals be referred to the 2019/20 Council budget for deliberations; a performing arts centre in the township of Melton, and construction of a five court basketball stadium. I have also proposed a $5 increase in the pensioner rebate. With the cost of living rising, I will always strive to ensure our older residents can access affordable services that support health and wellbeing. Budget deliberations are in the final stages, with the draft budget to be considered at the 1 April Council meeting. Be sure to check Council’s website regularly, for updates on how this year’s budget is progressing. On the topic of budgets, we’re

advocating for the State Government to allocate $2.3 million in the 2019/20 budget to commence planning for Melton hospital. This commitment was an outcome of our successful advocacy campaign last year. Finally, the Western Highway is an important arterial link, but the section that passes through the City of Melton has become sub-standard and congested in recent years. I urge residents to support Council’s Upgrade Western Highway campaign which is calling on the Victorian and Australian Governments to upgrade the Western Highway to urban freeway standard within the City of Melton. You can sign the petition at catchup.org/melton Please feel free to contact me with your ideas or issues for Coburn Ward on 0412 584 067 or sophie.ramsey@melton.vic.gov.au

Growing suburbs keep CFA busy By Esther Lauaki

Proof is in the baking

(Dennis Manktelow)

Melton and Caroline Springs CFA are among the three busiest fire brigades in the region, responding to nearly 400 incidents in the past quarter, new data shows. Latest CFA response times for October to December reveal the Melton brigade responded to 219 incidents over the three months, making it the busiest brigade in district 14. Craigieburn, which covers Melbourne’s north-west and parts of the west, was the second busiest responding to 168 incidents, followed by Caroline Springs with 161. The data also shows that Melton CFA’s average response time is seven minutes and 59 seconds, with 91 per cent of incidents responded to within the required eight minutes. Caroline Springs brigade’s response time averaged eight minutes and 50 seconds with 79 per cent of incidents responded to within the required eight minutes. Statewide, CFA’s compliance with the Community Service Delivery Standard sits at 87.5 per cent – below its 90 per cent target. Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said the data showed a need for significant reform of fire services statewide. “We’re committed to implementing a positive plan that will ensure both our career and volunteer firefighters are supported to keep doing their great work,” Ms Neville said. “We need a system in place that allows for us to plan ahead of growth occurring in communities, so we can keep Victorians safe. “We’ll continue to invest in our fire services to ensure they have the resources and training they need to perform the vital task of protecting the lives and property of Victorians.” Details: www.cfa.vic.gov.au/about/ emergency-response-times.

Sarisa Kaewklang makes a gateau that will make your mouth water. The Caroline Springs baker took home the silverware at the latest Victorian Baking Show earlier this month. Ms Kaewklang’s gateau earned second prize at the bake-off. Originally from Thailand, Ms Kaewklang used to work in massage therapy but decided to carve a new future in what she was passionate in – retail baking. “I’m very happy and proud of myself for winning this award,” the 47-year-old Kangan Institute student said. “I love cooking and baking so I decided to enrol in retail baking. “It’s what I enjoy doing and hope it will lead to a job in baking.” Ms Kaewklang joined two of her fellow classmates, Nibal Almarri and Cassandra Hedger, in clinching the top three prizes in the gateau category of the baking competition. Kangan Institute chief Trevor Schwenke said the students’ win reflected their passion and skills in the field. “We’re very proud of our student bakers for excelling at state competitions like the Victorian Baking Show where students are competing against industry professionals,” Mr Schwenke said. New Coles for Woodlea By Esther Lauaki Residents in Rockbank’s new estates will soon have a supermarket close to home. Woodlea will have a Coles supermarket at the heart of its upcoming town centre which is set to open next year. Project director Matthew Dean said the announcement was a reflection of the rapid growth of the suburb. “We want to ensure the delivery of local facilities matches the huge growth of the community,” Mr Dean said. “The convenience of a central supermarket and destinational town centre will be the next jewel in the crown of this thoughtfully master-planned community.” The closest supermarket is currently a 30-minute round trip away in neighbouring Caroline Springs. Mr Dean said since launching in March 2015, Woodlea is home to 3000 residents and that is expected to grow to about 6000 residents by 2020. A cafe, pharmacy and medical centre, Bacchus Marsh Grammar Early Learning Centre and primary school and a sports precinct have already been established. Woodlea’s Lora Djurdjevic said the 3690-square metre, market-style Coles will feature the latest fit out, an in-store bakery, a continental delicatessen offering a large range of cheeses and seafood and a Liquorland. There will also be a 350 space car park as well as an adjacent bus stop. Details: www.woodlea.com.au

Melton prayers for attack victims By Esther Lauaki Two Melton schools have joined in mutual support as the victims of a terrorist attack in Christchurch were remembered. Fifty people were killed when a gunman stormed two mosques in the New Zealand city on March 15. In a show of solidarity last Friday, Melton Catholic Regional College principal Mark Sheehan and five student leaders visited Al Iman College in Melton South.

‘‘

We codemn this senseless and vicious act - Mark Sheehan

’’

“We met with Brother Othman Abubakar and Mohammed Kahirul and conveyed sentiments to their leaders in light of the terrorist attacks on the two mosques in Christchurch,” Mr Sheehan said.

He said local Catholic communities offered prayers for the victims’ families and the Muslim communities in New Zealand and Australia. “We condemn this senseless and vicious act,” he said. “We condemn the hatred of migrants, which is a betrayal of the hospitality to the stranger.” Catholic Regional College students read a poem written by Jinghan Naan (of the Radiant Muslim blog) and presented a native plant arrangement.

“Each person was presented with a plaque which highlights our shared creation and equality amongst all people,” Mr Sheehan said. Caroline Springs police held a community engagement barbecue last Friday and shared a minute’s silence with Muslim leaders. Senior Sergeant Jason Dolman expressed messages of support and solidarity for all members of Melton’s Muslim community in the wake of the Chistchurch attack.

A friend for everyone A mother who was heartbroken after no one turned up to a little boy’s birthday is holding a party for 1000 children this month. Louise Larkin was inspired to host her first “Friend in Me” party after hearing the story of Melton boy Logan on the radio. No one had turned up to the sixth birthday of Logan, who has spina bifida. “His mum called the radio station and stated that her little boy had never been to a party before due to his disabilities and social exclusion, so Fox FM put on a big party for Logan’s seventh birthday,” Ms Larkin said. “I thought to myself, that’s really sad and if that was my children that would be heartbreaking.” So, Ms Larkin decided to create an event for children who feel lonely and isolated. About 350 people attended. Last year, that number doubled. “I want to keep campaigning to make sure that no child is left behind,” Ms Larkin said. “We are here to teach our children about

kindness and we do have to include people. “We want to bring together children from all walks of life, be it that they have a disability or they’re on the spectrum or maybe they just don’t have the confidence or they’re shy. Logan has turned up to the past two parties as an ambassador. This year’s party will have live music, roaming superheroes, balloon artists, face-painters, Auslan interpreters and a sensory room. The party is on March 31 at Seaworks in Williamstown from 11am-4pm. Proceeds will go towards Melbourne’s West ASD Network, supporting parents and carers of children with autism in the western suburbs. For more information, visit the Friend in Me page on Facebook Goya Dmytryshchak Chelsea Deacon and Louise Larkin. (Joe Mastroianni)

Resident despairs over suspected poisoning All the leaves are brown on a gum tree near Maurice Stewart’s house – but he suspects something more sinister than a change of season. The Hillside resident said he began to notice the tree nearest his driveway withering and dying in December. “I notice that all the other trees were green and healthy-looking but that one tree was looking brown,” Mr Stewart said. He said that an arborist confirmed his suspicions that the tree would not survive. “I come from the bush and I know that trees sometimes get dieback … I thought it might be that,” Mr Stewart said. “I rang the council and an arborist came out within a couple of days. “He showed me that there were four drill holes around the bottom of the tree and suspected someone might have been poisoning the tree. “Everybody keeps their front garden nice in our neighbourhood and it’s a shame that someone would do this to the trees.” A Melton council spokeswoman said penalties would apply if it was discovered that the tree was being poisoned. She said a number of factors would be considered including if the tree species was protected, if there was sufficient evidence and an offence could be proven. Anyone who suspects tree poisoning should contact the council for more information on 9747 7200. Esther Lauaki A gum tree may have been poisoned after holes were found around its base. New hub, the heart of Clarendon

Jon Rofe, Paul Tatchell and Brett Boatman officially open the Clarendon Community Centre. (Supplied)

The Clarendon community has a new place to gather, three years after fires devastated the area. The Clarendon Community Centre was officially opened earlier this month. Clarendon Recreation Reserve management committee president Trevor Smith said the new centre would be a great thing for community connections. “With no school and no hall there has been no place for us and no reason for us to gather,” he said. That lack of space became harshly apparent during the fires of December, 2015, when community members had to travel to Scotsburn to meet and receive information.

The new centre, located at Clarendon Recreation Reserve, has kitchen facilities, a social area, toilets and other amenities. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell, Jon Rofe from Forest Fire Management Victoria and CFA District 15 operations manager Brett Boatman officially opened the centre. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino announced in 2016 that Moorabool council would receive a $300,000 grant to deliver the Clarendon Community Hub project as part of a boost for community recovery. Stage two of the project will involve work to upgrade the Clarendon tennis courts and landscaping around the building, with work scheduled to be completed by the end of June.

Nellie McGrath with daughters Mary Doohan and Theresa Kirby, great-granddaughter Rosie and granddaughter Sinead Kirby. (Damjan Janevski)

As of January 1st, providers have dropped prices on their most expensively priced plans due to pressure from the Government.

Authorised by the Australian Government, Canberra.

A community barbecue at the centre was enjoyed by about 100 people in December, while the official opening attracted about 70 community members. “On Saturday there were members of the community we haven’t seen before come along,” Mr Smith said. “It is a great place for us to gather, socialise and get back to meeting people and our neighbours. It is good to have somewhere local we can meet to get together.” The next big event in the town will be a film screening scheduled for April 5 at Clarendon Community Centre.

Altona North’s Nellie McGrath has celebrated her 100th birthday. Nellie was born in Ireland before migrating to Australia with her husband, Myles, and their two children. She suffered asthma and had been told she needed to move to a warmer climate. The choices were South Africa or Australia. In 1960, Nellie and her family travelled by ship to Melbourne on the maiden voyage of the Fair Sky. Her first home was a Nissan hut at the Brooklyn migrant hostel with no running water, kitchen or bathroom. She secured a job selling personal insurance around Melbourne. It wasn’t any easy job. She had to walk for hours, often in 35C heat, knocking on doors in a bid to sell personal insurance. She also sold land in Melton the same way – what was then known as a door-to-door “salesman”. In 1960, another daughter, Mary, was born. Nellie then worked as a child minder, looking after six babies for 2 pounds a week, before moving to West Footscray, where she worked as a housekeeper at St Augustine’s presbytery in Yarraville. She also served meals in the canteen of West Footscray’s Southern Can Company. Nellie later moved to Williamstown and worked as a housekeeper at Customs House Hotel, before trying her hand at a local scallop factory off Nelson Place. In 1971, Nellie and Myles bought a house in Altona North. She met many people selling Avon products and serving in the school canteen of Mount St Joseph Girls’ College. One of her great loves is the Collingwood Football Club. In the past 59 years, she has rarely missed watching a game. In 2004, Myles moved into the TLC Marina aged-care home and eight months later Nellie sold their house and joined him. Nellie, who says her faith has been her strength, said that if she had her time over again, she wouldn’t change a thing. “Be content with what you have and you will always be happy,” she said. Nellie has eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Goya Dmytryshchak

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gives a new ‘local’ the thumbs up Melba Social is up and running just as two other new/newish places – Kensington Food Hall and the revamped Hardimans Hotel – are offering similar offerings, all three joints within a few street numbers of each other. Of course, we are interested to see what Melba Social tastes like so are happy to accept an invitation taken up by a CTS team of three (see full disclosure below). We find the food and service to be lovely, with much of the latter crossing over to very good. It is mostly straight-up Italian fare here. Notably, the portion sizes and pricing both serve to generate an impression of good value, that impression given heft by the busy Thursday night of which we are part. A trio of arincini ($13) – plump, generous and gooey with mozzarella and mushroom, topped by parmesan and rocket, all residing upon a superb, basilised tomato sugo. “Freaking hot” buffalo wings ($15) are only mildly spicy and look rather drab. But the proof is in the eating – they taste very fine and the serve is plenty big enough for all of us to have a hearty go. Oddly enough, it is the entree with the plainest visuals – “smokey” mushrooms ($12, above) – that most impresses. The panko-crumbed mushies are quite delicate and so, so juicy and tasty. My 200-gram porterhouse ($22) is top stuff, delivered just right at medium rare. The mash is a fine steak friend. The “cafe

Melba Social address: 524 Macaulay Road, Kensington Phone: 9372 2982 de Paris” butter is somewhat excess to my richness requirements, while the coleslaw has me wanting more acid or bite. Or salt. Julian loves his three cheese gnocchi ($24) with gorgonzola, grana padano and vintage cheddar. The pasta pillows really are like the proverbial clouds and very wonderful. I am trying to wean Bennie off chicken burgers – both for his own good and for purposes of CTS diversity. But he enjoys the Melba Social rendition ($18). Desserts are superb. Stone fruit and raspberry almond crumble ($10) immediately elicits from me the comment: “This is just like My Mum Makes!” A good deal richer and more decadent is “sizzling” brownie ($15). The brownie square is bigger than it appears and swims in a sticky sauce studded with blueberries. Melba Social strikes us as the sort of place that will become a cherished “local”. (Team CTS visited Melba Social as a non-paying guest of management.) New Homes Home owners have been warned to tread with caution when considering whether to lock in their home loan rates after several out-of-cycle rate rises from major and junior banks. Rising mortgage prices come at the same time as experts are starting to suggest the Reserve Bank could move in the opposite direction and cut rates, which could prompt banks to change course and follow suit. In January, NAB increased rates on its owner-occupier principal-and-interest loans by 12 basis points, and also hiked by 16 basis points its owner-occupier interest-only loans, investor principal-and-interest loans and investor interest-only loans. The bank last September announced it would hold its rates steady as long as possible, pledging to restore trust with existing customers, in the wake of hikes ranging from 14 to 16 basis points by rivals Westpac, Commonwealth Bank and ANZ. The move by the major lender follows a string of hikes from second-tier lenders in recent weeks, as the banks face higher funding costs. Some 13 junior lenders have lifted rates on some products by up to 20 basis points since December, including Macquarie Bank, ME Bank and Bank Australia, analysis by comparison platform finder.com.au found. “With the RBA cash rate stagnant and the costs of international borrowing increasing, many banks will increase their lending rates,” Finder insights manager Graham Cooke said. But in a competitive market, other lenders may “seize the opportunity” to get an edge over their rivals and reduce rates, he said. Citi Bank and IMB Bank have

Home loan rates: should you lock it in, or wait for a rate cut?

recently lowered their mortgage pricing. But even as the cost of funding for banks goes up, economists have begun predicting the Reserve Bank may need to move the other way and lower the official cash rate to boost the sagging property market and lagging economy. Weak inflation, downward revisions to

GDP growth, slipping consumer confidence, falling dwelling prices and a slower global economy will weigh on the Reserve Bank’s outlook. Mr Cooke said home owners looking for the lowest rate should consider holding off locking in their mortgage rate, in case the RBA cuts later this year. “If you’re worried about a rate hike, get

on the front foot and look at a fixed-rate mortgage, but keep in mind that a growing number of economists predict the next RBA movement may be a rate cut,” he said. This is an edited version of a story on domain.com.au by Jim Malo and Elizabeth Redman.

STAR WEEKLY FEATURE

Reliance reigns supreme As finalists in 14 categories, the Reliance Real Estate team was already feeling excited about the 13th annual Australasian Real Estate Results Awards (ARERA) when it rocked up to Sydney’s Luna Park on February 25. That excitement went through the roof when the team won three of the coveted awards, says Reliance General Manager Stevie Bell. “It was amazing to celebrate with our team alongside the best real estate agents and agencies from Australia and New Zealand,” Stevie says. “And to come away with such prestigious awards was so rewarding, as we were recognised for all of our efforts over the past year.”

THE WINNING EDGE “We won the highly competitive Agency of the Year (Metro) award; company founder and CEO Sunil Kumar took out Principal of the Year for the second year running; and Namneet ‘Honey’ Walia won New Sales Agent of the Year.” “We want to thank our communities for their welcome and support because without it, we would not be able to achieve such great results,” Sunil says. Real Estate Results Network founder Michael Sheargold said this year’s field was the finest and most competitive in the group’s history. “Our winners epitomise the industry’s ideals and values,” he states, “and I know they will continue to raise the bar of excellence within the independent real estate sector.”

RELIANCE REAL ESTATE’S STORY The agency began in 2011 with four employees and has grown rapidly to encompass more than 120 staff members working out of its seven offices in Melbourne’s west. Upcoming in April, Reliance will officially open offices at three new sites located in Sunbury, Gisborne and Riddells Creek.

For three consecutive years, Reliance has been named as Australia’s Fastest Growing Real Estate company by the Australian Financial Review, as well as also being named at Australia’s number 10 fastest growing company in Australia in 2018. “Our growth has been a result of our client centric approach in doing business. We believe in treating our clients with respect and faith and honesty and integrity, and have a big focus on creativity and innovation,” Sunil says.

THE RELIANCE CHARITY ARM “We take absolute pride in our communities so, in late 2016 we began a community-benefit fund, Reliance Foundation. Our employees contribute via salary sacrifices and we’ve developed solid partnerships with many local schools and community groups. “In March this year, our team is participating in the Cancer Council’s Relay For Life and we have already surpassed our goal of $2000 raised.”

Thoroughbreds hold their nerve By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds left it to the last second to seal a second win in the Big V men’s division 2 season. Paul Nikoloff-King hit two of three free throws with no time left on the clock to give the Thoroughbreds a 79-78 win against Wallan Panthers on Saturday night. Thoroughbreds coach Joe Hooks said it was a heart attack sort of game. He said while he was confident Nikoloff-King could hit at least two of the three free throws, there was still plenty of nerves. “I drew up a play and everyone executed what they had to. “I know Paul is a good three-point shooter and good free throw shooter “I’m pretty pleased with the boys who showed guts and showed pressure under fire. “They did a fantastic job and everyone stepped up. Our import [Chris Johnson] how fouled out and he’s one of the best players in the competition. “Everybody stepped up to fill that void.” The Thoroughbreds led by seven points at half-time, before scores were level at the last break. Johnson continued his good form, with 27 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and five steals before fouling out. It was an important win for the new-look Thoroughbreds, who are still coming together as a team. Just one player returned from last season’s team, Wol Wol Ngong.

Hooks said it wasn’t just the players who were different, but the style as well. “We lost some good players like Dexter Graham and Emmanuel Malou and the other guys. “Last season we were very athletic and exciting to watch. This year I think we’re a better shooting team. “We’ve got guys taking on new roles and they’re starting to gel as a team.” Hooks said while thrilled with the start to the season he knows there’s still a long way to go. “They are starting to come together as a group sooner than I would have thought,” he said. “They are just as good as team I have ever coached with every body gelling and working together and getting on the same page. “It’s a good way to start, but there’s tougher games to come. “We’ll take every game one week at a time and then refocus to take on the next game. “There will be a couple of bumps in the road.” The women’s side fell short against the Panthers in the earlier game. The Panthers had control for more of the game, before the Thoroughbreds hit the front in the third quarter. The Panthers found another level, despite injuries to two starters, and went on to win 83-64. Stacey Procak top scored with 20 points.

SPORT Storm shows grit to seal shield ‘tug of war’ As Sydenham-Hillside claimed the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Charles Clark Shield division 4 premiership, there was joy – but also relief. Having already claimed first-innings points during the first weekend, the Storm was pushed deep into day four by a Maribyrnong Park St Marys side in search of a reverse outright win. But the Storm held strong, securing the club’s first top side premiership in the VTCA. Captain Peter Magafas said the win followed a stern challenge. “We got the choccies,” he said. “I’m more relieved than anything. “It’s rewarding after such a long season. The grand final was a tug of war that they took into the last day. They kept fighting and we had to pull out our best to keep them at bay.” The Storm resumed on Saturday at 7-231 with a first-innings lead of 27. Magafas said the aim was to bat for as many

overs as they could after rain delayed the start. “We could bat for another 56 overs – that was the maximum we could bat,” he said. “We batted for close to 36 of them.” The Storm were bowled out for 280, giving them a first innings lead of 76.

Dylan Knight top-scored with 56, hit during the first weekend, while Jarryd Lindsay added one more to his total on Saturday before being trapped LBW for 40. Maribyrnong Park St Marys was on a mission with the bat to make runs as quickly as possible. The side batted the rest of the day and into day four before declaring at 9-267, giving it a lead of 191. “They came out slugging and scored quite quickly – it turned the game upside down,” Magafas said. Having lost a grand final two years ago in a similar situation, the Storm players were keen to make sure it didn’t happen again. In their second innings, the runs did not matter for the Storm – they simply needed to avoid getting bowled out. Magafas said Maribyrnong Park St Marys made them fight for it, but they were able to finish on 6-166 to take the flag. “Every time we looked to be pulling ahead

Centrals right on target By Tara Murray Melton Centrals’ hard work has paid off in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield premiership. The standout side all season, Centrals put it all out on the field when it mattered to claim a big win against Aberfeldie Park on Sunday. Centrals captain-coach Adam Hulett said it was a surreal feeling. “It’s been a long time coming,” he said. “It’s been 10 years since we won a first XI premiership and I was a part of that side. “It’s been one of those seasons where everyone has contributed and there has been no passengers. “Everyone has done exactly what was asked of them.” After making 379 on the first weekend of the match, Centrals had the upper hand entering day three and four. Hulett said while they thought they had enough runs on the board, they weren’t going to celebrate until they had that final wicket. “It was never going to be easy, Aberfeldie Park is a good side and play a good brand of cricket. “We were lucky we played better on the day.” Centrals snared constant wickets through day three, but it wasn’t until late that they took control. After resuming at 0-29, Aberfeldie Park was 7-178 at stumps. “We got some wickets in the last six or seven overs and it was reward for the hard work throughout the day,” Hulett said. “We bowled to a plan and the fielders backed them up.” On day four, Centrals didn’t need long and their opening bowlers wrapped up the tail. Aberfeldie was all out for 199. Hulett said they were ecstatic when the last wicket fell. “We were realistic up until we had taken the last three wickets that anything could happen,” he said. “We had to stay level-headed. We could have taken the new ball on Saturday, [but] decided against it. “We took it straight away [on Sunday] and the opening bowlers did the job in the first 20 overs.” Mathew Murphy was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-48. Young Connor Poulton was named man of the match for his 88 on the first weekend. Hulett said there were several players from both teams who could have won the award. “It was an amazing innings to bat for 135 overs, let alone do it as a 16-year-old,” he said. 24 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 26, 2019

and comfortably surviving, they would take wickets,” he said. “We held on to get victory.” Knight and Warren Hackney top-scored with 37 apiece and Knight was named man of the match. For Magafas, who is in his first season at the club, it was rewarding to see the supporters and those who have been around for a long time celebrate the win. “I came to the club through a friend,” he said. “It came about as there needed to be someone to change things up and … get the right team and structure to win flags. “I didn’t want to coach and captain, so our import Dane Currency took on the coaching and we did it together.” The Storm’s second XI won the Sport King Shield division 4 seconds grand final. The two wins come on top of a second straight title for the club’s women’s side. Tara Murray

Sports shorts NAB League Girls

The Western Jets are still without a win in the NAB League Girls competition. Facing the Northern Knights, one of the stronger teams in the competition, the Jets never looked like getting the win, as the Knights talent shone through. The Knights won 5.7 (37)-1.6 (12). Nikita Wright kicked the Jets only goal, in the first quarter. Ruby Tripodi and Elisabeth Georgostathis were named the Jets’ best players in the loss. The Jets face the Eastern Ranges on Sunday in their next match.

NAB League

The Western Jets kicked off the NAB League in perfect fashion with a thrilling win against the Northern Knights on Sunday. Both sides had periods of control, but it was the Jets that finished the better of the two teams. They kicked six goals to two in the final quarter to turn an 18-point deficit into a seven point win, winning 12.8 (80)-11.7 (73). Archi Manton kicked three goals for the Jets, while Josh Kellett was named the side’s best. For more on the Jets’ win, go to www. starweekly.com.au/sports

“He is a really special talent and I can not speak highly enough about him. “He’s a super athlete now, imagine him in five to 10 years time.” Hulett said winning a first XI premiership for a second time was just as good as the first. He said this one they had to work a little bit harder to get the job done, which is credit to Aberfeldie Park. Andrew Cristofaro and Murphy were also part of the last premiership team. The premiership is Centrals’ first men’s

premiership of any sorts for five years, when their third XI side claimed one. Their women’s side claimed their first premiership earlier this season. The win means that Centrals will likely earn promotion to division 4 for next season. Hulett said it’s a challenge they welcome. “It’s new teams to play against and new challenges ahead,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of talented cricketers here and there’s no reason why we can’t go back-to-back. If not at least go near it.”

Caroline Springs George Cross started the FV state league 1 north-west season with a draw against Banyule City. Having been demoted from the National Premier League in the off season, the Georgies were hoping to start the season on a positive note. Instead, they had to settle for a 0-0 draw. In state league 4 west, Spring Hills blew out the rust with a 7-1 win against Laverton. Yaw Oteng was the only multiple goalscorer, with two goals. Newly promoted Westside Strikers had a 2-2 draw with Bell Park. The Strikers left it late to steal a point with Shavaan Khan scoring in the 89th minute and then Felipe Jara scoring in the 92nd minute. In state league 5 west, Melton Phoenix had a 2-0 win against Lara United.

Saints hold on for a win in nail-biting grand final match After some close calls in recent seasons, St Anthonys has finally claimed the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts premiership. Playing in their third grand final in four years, it proved to be third time lucky for the Saints as they beat Bacchus Marsh in a thrilling grand final. Saints captain-coach Cam Clayton said it was an amazing feeling. “To be honest, it hasn’t sunk in yet and I don’t think it will until Tuesday or Wednesday. “It’s amazing for the group and the club. “We worked hard over the pre-season to get into this position, we learnt a lot from our loss to Wallan in last year’s grand final.” Bacchus Marsh won the toss and sent the Saints in. It was slow going early on but the Saints managed to push the total to make 9-269. It was the lower order that saved the Saints for a second straight week. “They bowled really well,” Clayton said. “Our tail got us to the total. Robert Strugnell [27 not out], Jason Orr [13] and Jason Craven [four not out] pushed us to 270. “To achieve that, I thought was a really good total.” Justin Craven top scored, making 52 at the top of the order.

In the end the Saints needed nearly every single one of those runs, as the Bulls pushed the game deep into day two. The Saints held their nerve, bowling the Bulls out for 242. Clayton said it was nerve-wracking towards the end. “They got off to a good start and were attacking our bowlers,” he said. “We knew runs on the board were always important, especially when it comes to a final.

“We held our nerve and knew if we could bowl our line and length we should be right.” All five Saints bowlers took wickets and Clayton was the pick of the bunch, taking 3-60. The Saints fielders also backed them up, with two run-outs. One of those was of danger man Shaun Taylor, who made 105. Taylor was named man of the match for his innings. The premiership is the club’s first top side premiership since the 2012-13 season which

promoted the club into the McIntyre Cup. Clayton, who was coach of that side, said they thought they were better equipped to go up to the top grade this time. “Last time we lost 12 players and went straight back down,” he said. “We want to recruit hard and keep the list we have, so some of that will filter down the grades. “We’ve got some good kids coming through too. Conrad Farrugia made 100 last week in a semi-final and made 100 this week in a grand final.” The celebrations continued for the Saints, with the side then watching their fifth XI taking out the Club grade South premiership on the next oval. That win was also against Bacchus Marsh. The Saints made 237 on the back of a century from Farrugia, before bowling the Bulls out for 214. Clayton said watching the team win made the day even more special. He said it was a big achievement for the Saints to claim two premierships in a town which has several cricket clubs. Tara Murray

Bulls win back-to-back flags By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh has claimed back-to-back Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts premierships. Clearly the best team over the past two seasons, the Bulls were rewarded with a second flag after beating Gisborne in the grand final at Maddingley Park at the weekend. Bulls captain-coach James Lidgett was understandably rapt. “This is the ultimate feeling,” he said. “It’s the best thing ever, winning with your mates. It’s the feeling you chase when you play cricket. “This one is as good, if not better.” The Bulls were tested by the Dragons with both bat and ball at times, but their class showed through when it was needed. The Dragons won the toss and elected to bat, but were in trouble early with the loss of early wickets. They steadied and were looking to post a good score, but after tea things went downhill, the Bulls bowling them out for 204. “We stuck to the gameplan and built the pressure up with dot balls,” he said. “We knew they would have to come hard at us and they did, but we got wickets. “It wasn’t a bad score.” James Bailey was the pick of the bowlers, taking five wickets while Rhys Watson took three wickets. Lidgett said the target was more than gettable. After the loss of Alex Porter early, Lidgett and Peter Lalor looked to be cruising, with the Bulls 1-91 at lunch. The Dragons then hauled themselves back into the game. Lidgett said the experience of Milinda Sepala Scott Wakefield helped get the Bulls over the line “They [Dragons] bowled in good areas and nothing came easy,” he said. “They made us work for it. We had a really solid start, with Pete attacking them. “After lunch they got three quick wickets and then bowled a lot of maidens. “Mili and Scott were able to absorb the tough period and got through it. We possibly broke their back then.” The Bulls finished on 4-208 with nearly 20 overs to spare. Lidgett said they knew that as long as they had wickets in hand they would get the job done. “We stuck to the plan and played with

freedom and reaped the awards,” he said. Lalor top-scored with 64 and Bailey was named man of the match for his bowling display. Lidgett said Bailey had bowled the best he ever had during the finals. “He is a captain’s dream,” he said. “He will bowl from either end and he bowled 26 overs in the grand final, which I don’t think he’s done before. He keeps going until you ask him to stop.” Lidgett said the pleasing thing for the side had been that different players had stepped up at different times throughout the season. He highlighted Bailey’s finals series and the performance of Rhys Watson in the grand final. While the Bulls’ top side claimed the premiership, their second and fifths lost their grand finals to St Anthonys.

Lidgett said having three senior sides making grand finals illustrated the club’s depth. “I’m proud of those guys – they gave it a red hot crack,” he said. “It shows the depth at the club in the lower grades and that is a good feeling, knowing there is quality coming through the grades and juniors. “Our under-17s also won the premiership. The club is in a good spot.” Lidgett said they would enjoy the win and then start looking to next season. “We would love to win three in a row, but we can’t get ahead of ourselves,” he said. “We’ve worked hard and will enjoy this one. “And then, in a couple of weeks time, we’ll look to see whether we need to add anyone else.” 25 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 26, 2019

MOTOR

By Jimny, new SUV goes all right By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring

AT A GLANCE SPECIFICATIONS

Suzuki Jimny is quite simply the most talked about vehicle on the planet. Forget the multi-million-dollar, ridiculouslyoverpowered vehicles just unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the cute-as-a-button Suzuki is the one that is dominating car-nut conversations everywhere. Since the first photos of the Jimny were released dealers have been bombarded with inquiries. Suzuki Jimny simply has no competition. No one else builds a low-cost, small, genuine 4WD. The closest vehicles come from Jeep and Land Rover, but they are out of the Jimny’s price class. We’ve just spent two weeks in a brace of new Jimnys, one a manual the other automatic. Styling I must admit being wrong when first sighting Jimny at the Queensland launch, feeling that it was just too boxy. But after seeing it on the road and watching the attention our test Jimnys got from passers-by I’ve fallen in love with it. The interior has a neat old-style dashboard, but it’s bang up to date with big easy-to-read instruments and a infotainment screen. Powertrain Power comes from a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 100 horsepower (75 kW in Aussie numbers) and 130 Nm of torque. The torque peak is at a relatively high 4000 rpm, but it feels fine from about 2000 and there’s a nice spread of grunt in all normal driving ranges. The engine sits in front of either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. All four wheels are driven by way of a transfer case with 2H, 4H and 4L modes that are selected by a lever on the centre tunnel.

Suzuki Jimny 1.5-litre five-door wagon ENGINE Capacity: 1.462 litres Configuration: Four cylinders in line Maximum Power: 75 kW @ 6000 rpm Maximum Torque: 130 Nm @ 4000 rpm Fuel Type: Standard unleaded Combined Fuel Cycle (ADR 81/02): 6.9 L/100km CO2 Emissions: 158 g/km Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Suzuki dealer for drive-away prices.

Cute as a button from any angle, Jimny would sell on looks alone, but there’s a lot more to it than simply its styling. (Supplied)

Safety Small … tough … ladder chassis … rigid-axles … heavy duty suspension. All are excellent features in a genuine 4WD. But make it very difficult to build a tiny vehicle that collapses well in a crash. The result is that Jimny only has a three-star crash rating. the open road, particularly on motorways. Around town the manual and auto both feel fine and the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels are noticeably lower than on the old Jimny so the interior is more sedate than you might expect. It’s not to small-hatch standards but surprisingly close. Handling is good with levels of grip and ease of control at speeds that belying that fact that it’s a body on chassis 4WD. old-style truck-based 4WDs. The secret is to avoid correcting every tiny little movement and let the Jimny make its own corrections. Strong crosswinds do move it around at times, something that would be very tiring on a long trip. As part of the media launch in January we did serious off-road driving on moguls and steep, deeply rutted hill trails. The new Jimny has even better approach / ramp-over / departure angles than the old, which were already excellent. Jimny takes you places where other alleged SUVs would get well and truly stuck and does it so easily that it feels more like a stroll in the park than a battle with the terrain.
