Police force bolstered By Ewen McRae Moorabool and Melton police numbers will be boosted as part of a statewide roll-out of new officers. Moorabool will soon have an additional 10 officers, along with 12 officers in specific units who will be shared with the Ballarat service area. The shared officers include six family violence specialists and four highway patrol officers. These police will be deployed across the area over a 12-month period, starting in May. Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul Naylor said the Ballarat and Moorabool communities can look forward to seeing an increased police presence in their area.

“This injection of resources will help us improve our policing response in the Ballarat and Moorabool areas,” Mr Naylor said. “As part of Victoria Police’s Staff Allocation Model (SAM), Ballarat in particular was identified as an area with a high need for services. “We are committed to keeping the community safe and these extra resources will help us to respond and prevent crime where and when needed.” The announcement follows the addition of 14 officers to the Moorabool area in last year’s deployment. Melton Police will also receive seven new officers and will share 14 family violence specialists and two highway patrol officers with the Brimbank region. Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent said the extra police were crucial in providing a visible presence for law enforcement in the region. “Every day and night police right across the state are working hard to keep people safe,” he said. “We know that in order to do that we need to be visible in the community, with police out in vans providing a mobile and agile response to incidents that occur. “It also means having expert teams in place that can provide a specialist capability to investigate complex crimes, gather intelligence and prevent harm in the community. “Rest assured we are never complacent. We will continue to monitor trends and emerging issues and police right across the state.”

A new commemorative sculpture will mark the entrance of the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour. The 2.9-kilometre long avenue is one of the largest war memorials in Australia. The sculpture has been commissioned as part of the Centenary of Armistice celebrations. Produced by local designers Mark Gilliland and Meghan McBain, and sculptor Dean Bowen, the artwork – Resting Poppy – will feature a vividlycoloured, multi-part bronze sculpture, interwoven with 464 name plaques. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said it would be a significant project for a well-loved local icon. “The significance of the WWI commemorative sculpture cannot be over-stated,” Cr Tatchell said. “The Bacchus Marsh RSL has worked tirelessly to bring this project to life and should be commended for their efforts.” For Mr Bowen, the sculpture will have a deeply personal connection after the discovery his great-grandfather’s service plaque is on one of the trees in the avenue. “I felt extremely moved and honoured knowing that this tree was planted in 1918 to honour my great-grandfather Archie Davis,” he said. The sculpture is expected to be completed in late-2020. Ewen McRae

Revamped sports hub a winner By Ewen McRae A multi-million dollar redevelopment of the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre has been unveiled. The $11.8 million refurbishment is set to transform leisure services in the area, with 15 new sports courts the cornerstone of the new facilities. Melton mayor Bob Turner was joined by local MP Marlene Kairouz to open the facility on April 15. Cr Turner said the new-look centre was a

boost for local sport and community groups. “This has transformed Caroline Springs Leisure Centre into one of the most impressive sporting precincts, not only in our city, but in Melbourne’s western suburbs,” Cr Turner said. “It’s wonderful to think of all the healthy
competition that is set to take place on these courts over the coming years.” The redevelopment included construction of two more indoor highball courts (basketball, netball and futsal); new changerooms, first aid room, function room, commercial kitchen; 12 outdoor tennis courts with lighting; one outdoor netball court; and three outdoor basketball/netball rings. The state government contributed $2.5 million towards the development, and Tennis Australia contributed $50,000. “We are very grateful for all the support that
has helped create a winning and much-needed sports precinct for our fast-growing community,” Cr Turner said. “Local sporting clubs are such a positive part of our city and I hope that this facility will not only support them, but encourage greater participation.” The facility is used by the Caroline Springs and Melton basketball associations, as well as Futsal Victoria, Tennis Victoria and various community sporting groups. The opening comes on the back of an announcement of a new basketball stadium to be built in Cobblebank.
Bacchus Marsh gym pair pumped
Hopefuls listed for election
Bacchus Marsh locals Andrew Hibbs and Laurinda Veit know what it means to push themselves physically – and they’re hoping to inspire others to do the same. They will open their own F45 gym this weekend, bringing to reality a long-time mutual dream – and having overcome many challenges in the process Andrew’s ambition of a police career took a hit when he was involved in a car accident six years ago that resulted in the loss of his right hand. “Obviously, something like that hinders joining the police a bit, but once I got into my rehab I was pretty keen to get back into staying fit,” he said. “I’ve got an electric hand for everyday stuff and this gym arm that I can use to grip weights and things like that. “It’s been Laurinda’s dream for a long time to open her own gym – and now that’s become my dream as well.” For Laurinda, simply walking into a gym was once a struggle after she was diagnosed with transverse myelitis as a teenager, becoming paralysed from the waist down. She had to learn to walk again and credited joining an F45 gym with her sister several years ago as a turning point. “I basically had to learn to do everything again, which was horrible,” she said. “When you’re a teenager, things like that are not fun at all. So for years I didn’t exercise at all because I thought that I couldn’t. “I’ve got muscles that still don’t work in my legs, but I got dragged along to F45 by my sister – and I’ve been hooked ever since. There’s something for everyone in it, so I could always find something for me. “Now it’s really exciting to have our own gym to call our own and help others in their fitness.” The gym will open on May 4. Candidates for next month’s federal election have been finalised. Candidates were last week unveiled for local seats Gorton and Ballarat, along with the order in which candidates will appear on the ballot at the May 18 election. Gorton – which includes Melton, Toolern Vale, Burnside and parts of Diggers Rest – will field five candidates: Richard Turton (United Australia Party), Jarrod Bingham (Independent), Harkirat Singh (Greens), Brendan O’Connor (Labor) and Nathan Di Noia (Liberal). The seat is held by Mr O’Connor. In the seat of Ballarat – which includes Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Gordon – there will be seven candidates. Incumbent Labor MP Catherine King will appear last on the ballot form, and will be up against Bryn Hills (Animal Justice Party), Peter Cozyn (UAP), Alex Graham (Independent), Nick Shady (Independent), Karen McAloon (Greens) and Tim Vo (Liberal). Maribyrnong will have four candidates, with Sarwar Hasan (UAP), James Williams (Greens), Opposition Leader Bill Shorten (Labor), and Christine Stow (Liberal) fighting for the seat. There will be six candidates in the seat of Lalor; Susan Jakobi (Australia First), Gayle Murphy (Liberal), Joanne Ryan (Labor), Jeffrey Edward Robinson (UAP), Jay Dessi (Greens) and Aijaz Moinuddin (Independent). Victorian senate candidates were also announced last week. Early voting started on April 29. For locations of early voting and election day centres visit: www.aec.gov.au

The popular Sons of the West program, promoting a healthy lifestyle for local men, is returning to Melton for another year. The Western Bulldogs Football Club developed Sons of the West in 2013 to promote health, improve wellbeing and prevent disease in men living or working in Melbourne’s west. Each week, participants will get active with new challenges tailored to their fitness levels, and every session will open with a presentation from a different expert in men’s health. Melton mayor Bob Turner encouraged all men aged 18 and over who live or work locally to consider giving Sons of the West a go. He said the program’s back-to-basics approach to health was perfect for men of all fitness levels. “It can be difficult to make time to get active
and to know what health advice is right for you. Sons of the West is such an accessible tool for local men to make that lifestyle shift,” Cr Turner said. The 10-week program includes workshops, presentations, events and fitness sessions, and is designed to make exercise and healthy lifestyles fun, achievable and enjoyable. There are three programs kicking off in the next week; one in Caroline Springs and two in Melton. Each participant in the program will be offered a free three-game membership to the Western Bulldogs. The Country Fire Authority’s Fire Danger Period has been extended for the Moorabool service area, and will now finish on May 13. The CFA reminded residents that a zero tolerance policy will continue to be enforced for people responsible for illegal fires. Burning off is prohibited without a written permit while the Fire Danger Period is in place. Residents who wish to conduct burn-offs on their private properties after May 13 need to follow some basic rules including registering the burn-offs, checking weather conditions, and following local council laws and regulations. Dig up some history
Charity, fires keep CFA busy
By Ewen McRae The history of Melton will come alive as part of the Australian Heritage Festival this weekend. Events are happening across the region, but one of the most popular is the Walk Among the Tombstones event at the Melton Cemetery, shining a light on some of the interesting and noteworthy residents of the area. The tour will be led by local historian Judith Bilszta and organiser Deb Slattery and will feature stories of the sometimes tragic and sometimes amazing lives and deaths of early residents of the district. Ms Slattery said the 157-year-old cemetery had plenty of stories. “We’ll go through some of the older tombstones, with a talk on each one, and different information on what we know about them,” she said. “People are always interested in learning about local history, and I think since Melton has so many new people moving into the area there’s an eagerness to get to know some of that. “There’s history going back to the 1840s in this township.” The first tour on April 26 had more than 60 attendees. The final tour will be held on May 4. Other Heritage Festival events include a tour with indigenous elders to prominent local sites, and the Heritage of the Air bus tour. Melton mayor Bob Turner encouraged residents to explore the various events happening across the municipality as part of the festival, which runs until May 19. “We’ve had an incredible response to this year’s Heritage Festival, and some events have already booked out,” Cr Turner said. Information on the Australian Heritage Festival and local events can be found at www. nationaltrust.org.au/ahf.

Community goodwill was on full display during last week’s Good Friday Appeal, with thousands of dollars raised by Country Fire Authority volunteers. Despite answering more than 140 calls for assistance on the day, CFA District 14 – which includes Melton, Caroline Springs and Diggers Rest – raised $158,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal. At the weekend CFA brigades in the district had a total of 142 responses, mobilising about 500 firefighters. District 14 president for Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria Mark Gravell said the busy brigades in the outer area of Melbourne provided operational support for nearby brigades as well as in their own primary response area. He praised the work of CFA volunteers, and called on any locals to consider becoming part a CFA group. “CFA’s highly active volunteer presence in outer Melbourne means dozens of trained firefighters can turn out to incidents in other locations and still maintain service levels in their primary response area,” Mr Gravell said. “Being a volunteer is a great opportunity for people who enjoy teamwork, a physical and mental challenge, and who want to provide a meaningful contribution in their community.” People interested in being a CFA volunteer can contact their local brigades via Facebook or their brigade websites. Forging new connections By Tate Papworth An organisation which supports young people in schools is calling for volunteers. EdConnect, a not-for-profit organisation, aims to help young people who are at-risk of becoming disengaged at school. Under the program, volunteers work with students, providing them with support for both education success and wellbeing. The program has run in Victoria for the past 14 years and is now placing a focus on Caroline Springs. EdConnect liaison officer Rhonda Velkovski said it was a great way for older generations to pass on some wisdom. “Sixty-three per cent of our volunteers are over 55 years of age,” she said. “We are harnessing the wisdom and skills of elder generations and communities are becoming enriched and young people are thriving.” She said the results speak for themselves. “All of our schools have reported the improvement of student self-esteem and confidence,” she said. “While 91 per cent of at-risk students have improved literacy and 87 per cent of students have improved in numeracy.” In Caroline Springs, volunteers help and support students in a homework club between 3-4pm Wednesdays and/or Thursdays weekly. The program has recently placed a volunteer at Taylors Lakes Secondary College as part of its focus on the west. Volunteers undergo a thorough recruitment and screening process, as well as a comprehensive training program to ensure they have the skills and ability to work with primary or secondary school students. Fun fund hands out $5 million The state government will continue to help Melton students attend excursions and school camps under a special grants program. Almost $5 million has been allocated to Melton students since 2015 under the government’s Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund, helping students attend activities such as school trips, sport programs, excursions and incursions. Local MP Steve McGhie said it was important that all Melton’s students had the same opportunities. “For students across the City of Melton, these payments will mean that no student misses out on joining their classmates in important and fun educational activities,” Mr McGhie said. “Since 2015, we’ve distributed more than $4.9 million in payments to families and schools in Melton to ensure that every student, regardless of where they live or their family’s situation, can participate in fun, educational activities that enrich their learning and school experience.” Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or temporary foster parents with a child enrolled in a Victorian government or non-government school, are eligible to apply. Payments of $125 per year for eligible primary school students and $225 per year for eligible secondary school students are made directly to the school and are tied to the student.

Police target illegal trail riders By Ewen McRae Police motorbikes were out in force last week as part of a crackdown on unlicensed riders and unregistered trail bikes across the Bacchus Marsh region. Responding to increasing public calls about trail bikes and small motorbikes being used on the back roads of the town and nearby walking tracks, local police called in the state’s solo unit (motorbikes) to help patrol the area. At least one bike was impounded and a number of infringement notices issued as a
result of the operation. Senior Sergeant Richard Quigg said it was a chance to deal with the issue head-on, as well as educate bike users. “This was all brought about by members of the public and their complaints about the off-road bikes … we’ve tried to put a stop to it and do some community education but it keeps happening,” Senior Sergeant Quigg said. “We’ve utilised the state resources of the solo unit. We will have them come out a number of times … they’re the experts on bikes. “It’s about community reassurance, and
showing the community that we are working on the issue. Secondly is the enforcement side and reducing road trauma, we don’t want off-road bikes contributing to road trauma anywhere. Then thirdly, it’s about education. “We actually have motocross clubs in Parwan and Maddingley that are made for this activity, not the main streets of town or in reserves. “We don’t want to stop kids going for a ride, but there’s places to do it legally and we need to make sure that message gets out there.” Senior Sergeant Quigg said the solo unit would be out a number of times throughout
the year to reinforce their message and ease the strain on local police. Police will also focus on motor bike safety and responsible motor bike usage. Senior Sergeant Quigg urged members of the public to continue to use the police ‘Eyewatch’ Facebook page to help identify potential offenders in the area. The operation follows a statewide Easter road blitz which recorded a high number of offences across the area, including 96 speeding offences in Moorabool and 39 speeding offences in Melton.
Parkinson’s pals thrive The Melton Parkinson’s Support Group is thriving – and looking to spread the help. Just a few years after the group’s re-launch, more than 30 locals living with Parkinson’s, or caring for someone with the condition, come together each month to offer support and learn more. For organiser Helen Lyne, the group performs a vital role. “We open our doors each month and invite anyone to come along and have a listen to our guest speakers,” Ms Lyne said. “We have social nights, as well, where we can sit around and people can talk about their symptoms or issues they’re having. “We have a full range of people in the group – from those recently diagnosed to some who are in wheelchairs and really struggling. Everyone is unique. “We try and vary our speakers – from physios, to exercise physiologists and speech
therapists – so it becomes a group education and help session. We have a lot of laughs along the way, too.” As part of Parkinson’s Awareness Month, the group recently presented Parkinson’s Victoria with a cheque for $1000 to go towards research. Ms Lyne said it was important that more people got to know what the group does and made use of its resources. “We cover a huge area – from Melton to Sunbury, Bacchus Marsh and Caroline Springs – so we get people from all over,” Ms Lyne said. “We team up with Djerriwarrh Health Services to help people out, but a lot of people don’t know we’re around. We love having new faces in the group.” The group meets from 10.30am-12.30pm on the second Thursday of the month at Melton Health, 195 Barries Road, Melton. Ewen McRae

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
MY PLACE Kathleen Codognotto has been a long-time volunteer at the Diggers Rest Family Services Centre. She spoke with Ewen McRae. What is your connection to Diggers Rest? I live in the older part of Diggers Rest. My husband and I have been here 30 years.
the older areas and newly developed ones. It offers opportunity for people to do activities. Neighbours Network meets here to plan, suggest and own programs. The centre has played a great role in the establishment of Diggers Rest Think Tank, a network of a large number of organisations, service groups and committees who come together to share information on a regular basis. It provides community resource information and face-to-face contact for the people who drop in at the centre. We have the outreach library visiting us, which enables the community to access books and DVDs etc. Perhaps in future we might have the council customer service wing here where we can pay our rates or get similar administrative work done.
What do you like best about the area? I love the fresh country air, also the flexibility of travel that Metro train provides in the area. It offers best of the both the worlds. It is not far from the city and still has an easy access to the regional areas. What could make the area better? I think that when the commercial development happens it will provide areas to interact with more people on a casual basis. More community space for activities and a performing arts centre would be great. A direct public transport link to Melton and Caroline Springs will increase our access to the activities happening around there.
Can you tell me about your work at the Diggers Rest Family Services Centre? How did you become involved? In the 1990s I joined the Young Mothers and Bubs group as a volunteer. Later, I assisted the infant welfare nurse with hearing tests. I helped Paula, the then community development officer from the Melton City Council when needed. I have been facilitating the friendship group for the last four years at the centre. I am also a member of the Greenies Group which tends the community garden. Recently, we joined with the council to make the entry to the centre
(Shawn Smits)
Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in the area? Houdini’s Cafe and Abelas the local pizza and takeaway shop.
What is the best thing or highlight of your time at the centre? The launch of the City of Melton Neighbourhood Houses video A House Where Everyone Belongs. It focused on the role of Neighbourhood Houses with great emphasis on volunteers, tutors and participants of all neighbourhood houses all over Melton. It was superbly edited and flowed so well. We, the stars who featured in it, walked the red carpet into the private screening and lined up on stage for presents and group photos. Then we enjoyed a great supper. There was a wonderful friendly Network plays a great role in organising events, buzz all evening. suggesting programs and voicing concerns on What would people be surprised to know important matters to the council. about you? Why do you think the centre is so important I am a keen learner and always curious to know more about things. Age has not dulled my spirit to the Diggers Rest community? I see it as a wheel: a well-oiled hub with of inquiry. I am a great-grandmother and still spokes reaching out to gather community in going strong.
more attractive by planting flowers and herbs in the planter boxes. I also do gentle exercise sessions here at the centre where our trainer Samantha keeps us strong and fit. Reclink launches its 2019 football program. (Marco De Luca)
A sporting chance Giving everyone the opportunity to play sport is one of the main drivers for Reclink, and its football program is doing just that. The group, which provides sporting opportunities for disadvantaged people, has launched its football program for 2019. Reclink senior sports co-ordinator Michael Walsh said Reclink played an important role in the community. “We deliver sporting programs to vulnerable or disadvantaged members of the community, and there is a real need for something like this,” Mr Walsh said. “It’s quite a broad program, and very inclusive as well. “The football program is for all-abilities, and we play in a structured competition with umpires etc … whether we win or lose is not
as important as just bringing people together and creating a safe environment where people can improve their wellbeing and connect with others.” The program runs on a Wednesday at Melton Recreation Reserve, with up to 60 people joining in the sessions on or off the field. “Sport and social activity brings people together, but there’s still so many challenges where people are in and out of the program due to various reasons, so we try and provide some consistency for them,” Mr Walsh said. Anyone interested in joining the program can contact Mr Walsh on michael.walsh@ reclink.org. Ewen McRae

The western suburbs legal fraternity was left shocked last year by the sudden death of magistrate Steve Myall, but his legacy is set to be celebrated through a new graduate program. Mr Myall was well known across the western suburbs as a magistrate in Sunshine and Werribee, as well as many years as a criminal lawyer. He was 59 when he died. The Steve Myall Graduate Program, for students completing legal studies in Melbourne’s west, was launched recently. The program will offer a work opportunity at Victoria Legal Aid’s Sunshine office for nine to 12 months while students complete post-graduate studies. Legal Aid managing lawyer Tamsin Mildenhall, who was mentored by Mr Myall, said it was a way of ensuring his memory lived on. “I wanted to do something that brought attention to the kind of things that I think he believed in and was proud of,” Ms Mildenhall said. “He provided a lot of mentoring for a lot of the lawyers here (Legal Aid). “He cared a lot about the clients, took his job really seriously, was very passionate about social justice and making sure that everyone had their day in court and was heard. He was known in our fraternity as someone who was very compassionate.” Ms Mildenhall said the graduate program would be a hands-on experience for the successful students, giving them the chance to get a foot in the door of the industry and complete vital training while completing their studies. “What I want is to pick up someone from the western suburbs, who might not have the
cultural capital that you usually need to get a job in the law,” she said. “A lot of students find it really difficult to get the necessary experience you need to be admitted, so this program would basically pay someone while they’re doing that final bit of study. And hopefully that gives them the
connections so that once they get admitted they can get a job. Legal Aid has backed the idea … Mr Myall’s wife was very thankful that we’re doing something that she feels he would be really chuffed about.” The first successful student will commence the program in August.

Melton Council will consider a rescission motion against the controversial Church street barricade at its meeting on Monday May 14. The rescission motion was foreshadowed by C. Charley Finch at the council meeting on Monday night.
The communities of Bacchus Marsh and Melton were in shock this week after an horrific accident at Anthony’s Cutting, Western Hwy, on Friday left three people dead, two of them teenagers from Melton.
Water restrictions in force in Melton and Bacchus Marsh will continue throughout winter if the water levels at Lake Merrimu are not restored. The communications manager for Western Water, Mr Craig Lawlor, said he could not see the restrictions being lifted in the near future and their duration depended on the water.
Melton Council has been asked to intervene in a growing battle on the future of the historic Diggers Rest Hotel. A group of locals, backing the owner’s plans to demolish the ruins and build a new pub, has called on the council to hold a public forum to discuss the hotel’s future.

A beautiful garden sets the stage for this impeccable haven, reclining behind its thriving trees. Rustic tiled floors flow from the entry hall past a theatre room/lounge room, and a carpeted main bedroom with walk-in robe and classic timber en suite, to a large open living zone. Sturdy timber cabinets in the kitchen complement the stainless-steel appliances, while a curving breakfast island overlooks the meals and family area, which leads out to a generous rumpus room. Just outside, a covered, decked entertainment area is surrounded by lush plants and a water feature, while the backyard is a picture of tranquillity. Three more bedrooms have built-in robes and share a spacious central bathroom. Cooling, heating and alarm system are included. There’s an early education centre just 280 metres away, schools within two kilometres and shops at close range.
Recently revamped and looking fresh and smart, this residence is ready to welcome a first-home buyer or canny investor. It has glossy pine floorboards in living areas and bedrooms, and dark-grey roller blinds and lace at windows. A wide entry hall ducks left to the three fitted bedrooms which neighbour a fully tiled bathroom with a modern tub; the toilet is separate. Open-plan living includes a lounge room, and the kitchen at the centre of dining and family areas. The kitchen comes with stone benches and splashbacks, plus a gas upright cooker. Heating and cooling are included. A covered deck shelters a barbecue area and the backyard has a shed in a fenced-off area. A freestanding garage, ideal as a man cave, has red gum shelving and workshop space. Schools are close by and restaurants and medical centre are within walking distance.

Reclining on one and a half acres and bordered by timber, stone and Colorbond fencing, this five-bedroom house is designed for the discerning family. Natural colours on the floors and walls are accented by brushed metal pieces throughout, a look that reflects the surrounding environment. Front-facing windows in the lounge room bring the outdoors in and lend a relaxed atmosphere to this zone, as they do in the study on the opposite side of the entry hall. The easy ambience continues in the vast open living area, where rustic floorboards backdrop the family, meals and kitchen zone. The sand-coloured scheme is picked up in stone benchtops, including the waterfall breakfast bench, while stainless-steel appliances and metal pendant lights are a striking contrast. The addition of a mirrored splashback draws in light and views of the spectacular countryside framed just outside picture windows. Just past a home theatre room, the main bedroom has a walk-in robe and a dazzling en suite with floor-to-ceiling tiles. Twin basins sit on a vanity and there’s a luxury bathtub. The remaining bedrooms are close to a smart central bathroom, as well as a rumpus room. Other appealing inclusions are a double garage, alarm system and cooling.

There’s a touch of the seaside in this beguiling California bungalow-style house and it begins even before the front door. There are the dune-like colours of the brick and weatherboard panels, and the coastal-scrub tones of the pebbles and shrub lining the driveway and garden path. Beyond dual, thick-footed pillars, there is the elegant yet relaxed atmosphere residing in the house itself. To the right of the entrance hall, there’s a main bedroom, followed by a lounge room, both of which have earth-toned carpets that cradle the feet. From here, ash blonde

timber floors course down a brief corridor to an open living zone that also integrates a meals area and kitchen. Glass splashbacks paired with taupe walls, cabinets and sea shell-toned surfaces continue the coastal theme in the light-filled kitchen, while pendant lights dangling above the island bench and a generous butler’s pantry ensures the domain stays refined and trim. Just outside the living zone, the paved barbecue area melds with a landscaped backyard that has neat gravel and low, sprouting shrubs along the Colorbond fence
line and provides ample room to enjoy the sun. In the front-facing main bedroom, warm carpets keep the space cosy, while the windows are adorned with breezy curtains and stylish metal rods and there’s also a walk-in robe and a smart en suite. The other bedrooms have views of the rear and side yard and have built-in robes, while sharing a central bathroom. There are extra-large floor and wall tiles in this sanctuary-like space and polished fittings include a voluminous, free-standing tub for luxurious immersions.

A double garage with secure internal door, roller blinds at many of the windows, ducted heating and cooling add to the feeling of ease in this lovely house. With the coast some distance away, it isn’t exactly seaside living, but being located in the middle of a well-established community, puts a vast range of facilities nearby. It’s just three minutes by foot to Bridge Road Children and Community Centre, Melton Athletics Club and a short, five-minute drive to local primary schools. Cobras fight for first win By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh opened its account in the Ballarat Netball League, beating arch-rival Darley on Saturday. The Cobras had to work hard for the win, with the Devils the better side in the first half. The Devils led by three goals at quarter-time and two goals at half-time. The Cobras found another level in the third quarter, outscoring the Devils 17-7 to take control of the game. They extended that lead in the last quarter to win, 53-40, to get their first win of the season. Ashlee Mitchell shot 31 goals at 89 per cent to lead the Cobras. Melanie Freeman was the sharp shooter for the Devils, shooting 31 goals from 36 attempts. The Devils are without a win after two rounds, but have shown some good signs against sides that played finals last season. It was a tough weekend for both Melton and Melton South, with both sides suffering big losses. Melton was no match for East Point, losing 76-38. The Kangaroos took a nine-goal lead after the first quarter and extended that in every quarter. Paige Gilcrist and Keely Boudrie shot 18 goals apiece for the Bloods. After a first-up win, Melton South found it tougher against the Sunbury Lions on Saturday. The Lions led from start to finish, winning 61-38. Charity Suafoa short 36 goals for the Panthers. This weekend, Bacchus Marsh hosts Melton, while Melton South plays Darley.

SPORT Sharks nail another win as they get their act together
Raafat Rachrache kicked five goals against Roxburgh Park. (Marco De Luca)
Hillside continues to build momentum in Essendon District Football League division 1, picking up its second win of the season. The Sharks have shown glimpses of good football in the opening three rounds, but haven’t been able to put it all together just yet. Sharks football manager Darren Mantanyan said they knew it would take some time for the side, following changes to the playing group. “We’re building slowly, but a bit slower than we would have liked,” he said. “We’ve tweaked the game plan a fair bit. We have five under-19s and five new players.” The Sharks were strong after half-time against Roxburgh Park, kicking 10 goals to one on the way to a 14.11 (95)-5.9(39) win. Mantanyan said that despite the Magpies having struggled since coming into division 1, the Sharks knew they would be tough opponents. “We knew they would be competitive for a half, having seen their first couple of games,”
he said. “Roxy was good for periods, but they ran out of legs. “Fitness is a strength of ours and we were kicking with a strong six-goal breeze in the final quarter. “We kicked four goals against the wind in the third quarter and that set up the win.” Mantanyan said 19-year-old Ferdinando Petrarca was brilliant, playing his best senior game for the club. Raafat Rachrache kicked five goals to continue his good form. He’s kicked 11 in the past two weeks. Mantanyan said those two players were the only real standouts, with the win otherwise featuring an even spread of contributions. The Sharks will this week face East Keilor, which has been the hot team of the opening two rounds. Mantanyan said the Sharks couldn’t afford a repeat of the poor starts they had in their first three matches.
In a positive sign for the side, Brandon Coletta should make his season debut. Coletta will add plenty up forward for the Sharks. A win would be vital for the Sharks, who are looking to push into the top four. “We would have liked to be 3-0 at this stage, but we let one go against Taylors Lakes,” Mantanyan said. “It was a bit of a reality check for where we are at. It’s a tough competition.” In other division 2 matches, Burnside Heights remains undefeated after beating Coburg Districts. The Bears won 11.11 (77)-6.9 (45). In the women’s premier division competition, Burnside Heights notched up a 14.8 (92)-0.1 (1) win against Craigieburn. Hillside lost 4.13 (37)-2.2 (14) to the Sunbury Kangaroos on Friday night. Tara Murray
Diggers Rest on a roll By Tara Murray Diggers Rest’s good early season form continued with a win against Wallan in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. After two welcome wins to start the season, the Burras faced another test on Saturday against an undefeated Wallan side. The Burras pushed to another level in the second half to run away to a 13.15 (93)-9.14 (68) win. Burras playing coach Jamie Lobb said their work in the off season showed through when it was needed. “We know Wallan will be a good side,” he said. “We were interested to see how their form would hold up. “The first half was a lot closer than the scoreboard showed. They missed a few shots and kept us in the game, while we were able to convert. “We’ve had good second half form … It’s good for the players to see they are reaping the rewards.” The win came despite losing Stuart Clarke and Lachie Langford as late withdrawals before the game. Lobb said Tom Evans and Jack Wilson, who came into the side, both played their roles well. Thomas Taylor, Cole Laurie and Todd Delahey kicked two goals apiece for the Burras. Lobb said Matthew Krul and Cale Morton were the standouts in the win, while Luke Delahey played his best game since coming to the club. Morton, who moved between the back line and middle, spent the game in the midfield. Lobb said one of their main strengths this season was flexibility within the squad. “We’ve got six, seven even eight guys that can play two or three positions. “It all depends on match-ups.” The Burras are one of two undefeated teams after three rounds, along with Melton Centrals, which had the bye at the weekend. On paper, the Burras had one of the hardest starts to the season facing Rupertswood, Riddell and Wallan, which all played finals last season. Lobb said they were happy with their start. “Speaking after the game to people around the club, they had a pass mark of 2-1 and we’re sitting 3-0,” he said. “We’ve still got our best football ahead of us. We’ve got Broadford and Melton Centrals before the bye. “Both sides have improved and we have to be switched on, we don’t want to drop a game.” 28 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 30, 2019
Chris Johnson returned to form for the Melton Thoroughbreds (Shawn Smits)
Melton back to winning ways
Andrew Tyquin was one of the standouts for Diggers Rest on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)
Lobb said Clarke, Langford and the others out of their senior team were unlikely to return this week. In other results, Rockbank had a tough day against Broadford. Both sides were hoping for
their first win but it was the Kangaroos who triumphed, winning 22.14 (146)-6.8 (44). Rupertswood won the Anzac Day clash with Macedon, Romsey smashed Woodend-Hekset, while Riddell beat Lancefield.
Melton Thoroughbreds have returned to the winners’ list in Big V men’s division 2 basketball. After losing their previous four matches, the Thoroughbreds returned to form against the North East Bushrangers. After a strong first half, the Thoroughbreds led by 18 points at half-time. The Thoroughbreds kept the Bushrangers to under 10 points in each of the first two quarters. The Bushrangers lifted their game in the third quarter, but the Thoroughbreds responded, extending their lead in the last quarter to seal an 88-54 win. Import Chris Johnson returned to form with 22 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals. Four other players scored double figures, as every player got on the court. Only one player didn’t hit the scoreboard. The win, the Thoroughbreds’ fourth of the season, keeps them in touch with the top six. Melton’s women’s side had a tougher time of it on Sunday, losing to the Coburg Giants in division 2. The Thoroughbreds led early before the Giants turned the game in their favour with a 32-12 second quarter. While the Thoroughbreds fought back in the third quarter to reduce the margin to seven points, the Giants responded again to eventually secure a 88-74 win. Jenna Conroy top-scored with 18 points coming off the bench. The loss, the Thoroughbreds’ second in a row, gives the side a 3-3 record. Tara Murray

Devils get the job done By Tara Murray It wasn’t pretty, but Darley came away with the points after beating arch-rival Bacchus Marsh in the Ballarat Football League. In a performance that left Devils’ coach Heath Scotland frustrated, the side did just enough to get over the line. Darley led at every change, but wasn’t able to blow the Cobras away, winning 12.15 (87)-10.10 (70). Scotland said they had a lot to work on in coming weeks. “We were pleased with the win, but certainly not pleased with how we played,” he said. “We let ourselves down … some things we talked about, we didn’t execute.” Scotland said getting wins while not playing well was important, as it could have an impact on ladder positions. Scotland said the Devils had few standouts on the day, with only three players clearly winning their positions. “I thought Andrew Azzopardi in the midfield did the job on Nick Stuhldreier, who we rate really highly,” he said. “Mark Hanson (three goals) and Casey Young (four goals) were good up forward … they were the main players.” For the Cobras, Daniel Burton kicked three goals and was named their best. The Devils are undefeated after two rounds, while the Cobras have yet to win. The Devils will face Melton South and Melton in the next two rounds. Scotland said the Devils were in an ideal position. “Being 2-0 at the start of the season sets us up and hopefully we can get a couple more on the board,” he said. In a big plus for the Devils, Brian Graham, who Scotland believes is the best player in the competition, will return from suspension this weekend. Scotland said a few more players return in the next few weeks. “We’re still playing five under-18s, which is great, but … getting some experienced heads will strengthen us up.” In other matches, Melon had a tough day in the grand final rematch against East Point. While there wasn’t much between the two teams on the last day of last season, the Kangaroos were on fire on Saturday. A six-goal-to-nil second quarter broke the game open, with the Kangaroos eventually winning 13.8 (86)-6.10 (46). Dyson Stevens was named the Bloods’ best. Melton South was again competitive, but fell short against Sunbury Lions. The Lions led all day, but were never able to break the game open. They won 12.15 (87)-10.6 (66). Paul Bower was named the Panthers’ best.
SPORT
Melton kicks off with its first women’s side After a rocky beginning, Melton fielded a women’s football side for the first time on Sunday. The Bloods struggled for numbers early on in the pre-season but that was all put behind them on Sunday as they took to the field against Gisborne in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition The more experienced Gisborne line-up came out on top, winning 11.15 (81)-0.0 (0). Bloods coach Beau Beck said all the players were excited about taking to the field. “It was a rough start with numbers, but they have come along nicely,” he said. “We’ve got 22 players which is pretty healthy from where we came from. “Some of the netballers have joined and helped with numbers.” Beck said anyone who wanted to join the club, was welcome to play. He said one of the pleasing things about the side was seeing some players who were juniors at the club, returning to come and play with the Bloods. Beck, who was instrumental in setting up the side, had not planned on coaching the women’s side. Now that he has, he is excited by how it’s gone. “It wasn’t the plan at all,” he said. “I’m part of the senior football club with the men’s, so my Saturdays are taken up. “Now my Sundays are taken up … I had to run it by the wife. “Now we’re under way, I’m happy to do the job.” Beck said it was different being involved with female footy compared to the men’s. He said the women wanted more information about what they were doing. With a new side, Beck said the biggest thing this season was about learning the game and having some fun along the way. “It’s about teaching the girls and getting them familiar with the demands of football,” he said. “We have a lot of inexperienced players. “It’s about learning the positions and the game and then worry about getting some wins.” In other results, Bacchus Marsh defeated Darley in the local derby, 6.3 (39)-1.8 (14). Cobras captain Abbey Bertram took home the best on ground. Melton Centrals also had a good win to start the season, beating Lake Wendouree, 12.19 (91)-3.2 (20). Tara Murray
Darley’s Mark Hanson takes a mark in front of his Bacchus Marsh opponent. (Shawn Smits)
Bacchus Marsh building the foundation for a win Bacchus Marsh showed some positive signs in the second half of its loss to Darley, but the Cobras remain without a win after two rounds of the Ballarat Football League. After a poor first half against arch-rival Darley, the Cobras found another level in the third quarter to work back into the game. While the Cobras pushed hard in the fourth quarter, injuries took their toll. The Devils did enough to win, 12.15 (87)-10.10 (70). Cobras coach Pete Davey said they had a good chat at half-time, which sparked the improved performance. “Things are going in the right direction,” he said. “Our second half was much better than what we have seen so far this season. “We had a chat before the game and one at half-time.
Daniel Burton was the standout for Bacchus Marsh on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)
“We want to play for each other and we want to walk off the ground and look each other in the eye, knowing that we did everything we could to get a good result.
“We attacked the contest and brought the margin back, but we were always chasing tails.” It was an undermanned Cobras who took to the field, with three late withdrawals including Harrison King with a hamstring injury. Game day did not start well as Tom Brownbridge went down with a knee injury early in the game. Jake Owen then injured an ankle in the second quarter. While he played out the game, Davey admits he probably shouldn’t have. Despite the injuries, the Cobras fought on and got back into the game on the back of ruckman Daniel Burton. Burton, who won last year’s Henderson Medal, again showed why he’s among the best players in the competition. “He broke the game open in the third quarter in the ruck and kicked three goals,” Davey said. “He was phenomenal and was clearly the best
big man on the ground, if not best on ground.” Burton joined the injury list late in the game, not helping the Cobras hopes of completing the comeback. Davey said they were able to stick to the game plan for the whole second half, having managed to do that for just 25 minutes in round one. “It’s quite a different game plan and they’re just adjusting to it,” he said. “There’s good signs and we had a chat about things and everyone is on the same page.” Davey said Jacob Chisari and Thomas Wardell were the other standouts. The task doesn’t get any easier for the Cobras this weekend, when they face last season’s runners-up Melton. The Bloods were well beaten in the grand final rematch with East Point on Saturday. Space aplenty in the new Tiguan By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Midway through 2018 Volkswagen introduced the seven-seat Tiguan Allspace. Though based on the five-seat Tiguan the new Allspace is a significantly longer vehicle. It has more overall length, a longer wheelbase and 106mm more rear overhang. All of which allows for the addition of two seats in a third row but with the same width as the five-seater. Cleverly, it still has a boot capacity of 230 litres with all the seats in use. With the third row seats folded down the boot goes up a very useful 700 litres. Interestingly, the Allspace is the only seven-seater in the Volkswagen SUV range as the larger Touareg is still a five-seater. Despite the impressively low prices – from $45,490 to $60,427 – the equipment levels are high in both models: three-zone climate-control air conditioning, keyless entry and start as well as an electronic tailgate. There is even a rechargeable torch in luggage area. Highline adds electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, heated front and second row two outer seats and Vienna leather appointed upholstery. Our test Tiguan Allspace for the past week was the top of the range model, the R-line, which adds 20-inch Suzuka alloy wheels, R-Line bumpers and side sills, a black rear spoiler, aluminium scuff plates, black Vienna leather seats, black headline, steering wheel with paddles, brushed stainless-steel pedals.
Infotainment
A Volkswagen Discover Media navigation system is operated through an 8-inch touchscreen with App-Connect, Media Control.

traffic jam assist. Automatic headlights and wipers are part of the safety package.

Apple Carplay And Android Auto is standard in both models as is Bluetooth. Allspace Highline upgrades to a 9.2-inch screen and Discover Pro satellite navigation system. Audio entertainment in our test vehicle was by way of the optional Dynaudio Excite premium sound system and was a delight to listen to. There are only three USB ports, we reckon an extra couple would make more sense in a vehicle designed for multiple kid carting.
Safety
Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace has been given a five-star ANCAP safety rating. The second row seats have three top tether points and IsoFix mounts in the outboard positions. Driver assist features include city autonomous emergency braking, multi-collision braking, pedestrian monitoring, lane assist, park assist, a rear view camera and front and rear sensors. To these safety features, the Allspace Highline adds side assist, rear traffic alert and
The front and middle rows have ample legroom and headroom, but the rear pair of seats are best left for preteen kids. The engine is responsive, with minimal turbo lag and real willingness to get up and go when you want to. Fuel consumption was typically in the six to eight litres per hundred kilometres range on motorways and easy paced country roads. If you do get stuck into it usage is likely to climb dramatically into the 10 to 13 litres range. On the road, comfort is good, with the typical solid feel we’ve admired in Volkswagens for many decades. Steering feel is good, perhaps a little lighter than some would like in a semi-performance vehicle like this, but we were happy with it.
Summing up
Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace R-line is an attractive, comfortable people mover with a hint of sportiness in its makeup. The R-Line costs a fair bit more than the more basic versions, but if you can justify the extra bucks, it’s worth it.
