Prem Piper a little treasure To see little Piper walking around now you would never know the challenges she faced during her first weeks of life. Andrina Anderson was 30 weeks pregnant in January 2018 when she felt the baby’s movement diminish, and decided with her husband Gary that it would be best to get it checked out. Within hours of arriving at Sunshine Hospital she had given birth to Piper via cesarean. “They found that Piper’s heart rate was going super high and then super low so said it was better to have her out than in,” Andrina said. “They later said if they’d waited just a few more hours she may have died. “Later that day she was transferred to Heidelberg Mercy Hospital for more tests and monitoring, which is where she was for about 42 days.” Andrina said having a premature birth had its challenges for their family. “I was stuck at Sunshine for a few days while Piper was in Heidelberg, so I felt a bit like a mother cat who’s kittens had been taken away,” she said. Andrina and Gary are taking part in the Walk For Prems on October 27, the annual fundraiser for the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting the families of babies born sick or prior to 37 weeks gestation. Burglaries on the decline By Ewen McRae Crime rates across Melton have remained relatively steady in the 12 months to June, according to the latest data. Figures released last week from the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency showed a four per cent rise in recorded crime compared to the same period last year. In the burglary/break and enter category, which includes aggravated burglaries, 1035 incidents were recorded, almost 300 fewer than during the peak recording year of 2016, when 1325 incidents were recorded.

‘‘

most pleasing ... is that aggravated burglaries have gone down - Zorka Dunstan

’’

Melton local area commander Zorka Dunstan said the results were pleasing overall. “Overall it doesn’t look too bad, especially when you consider our population growth,” Inspector Dunstan said. “It’s pleasing to see the rate per population numbers going down, and there’s nothing that

really seems to be jumping out as a major issue or alarming. “The most pleasing thing is that aggravated burglaries have gone down, and they were a real issue for us at the start of last year. “I would suggest that we’re tracking along quite nicely.” The number of drug offences rose from 467 to 578, but Inspector Dunstan said that did not necessarily indicate a growing problem. “We did have a period where we had quite a number of drug operations that targeted this area, so that tends to attract the offence rate going up,” she said.

“That wasn’t unexpected from our end, but it is an area that we keep a strong focus on.” For Moorabool, recorded crime fell by about three per cent in the 12 months to June. Theft offences were down to 634 from 788, while burglary/break and enter offences were also down substantially, from 221 to 177, the best result since 2011. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said crimes in which people suddenly found themselves face-to-face with an intruder in their home, or had their car violently stolen from them in the street, were an “absolute priority” for the force.

Food truck park bid blocked By Ewen McRae Plans for an expanded food truck park in Melton this summer are in disarray, following a decision by council officers to knock back a planning permit for the event. The Melton Food Truck Park ran on a monthly basis at Navan Park between November 2018 and April 2019, and had planned to move to a bigger site behind the Bridge Road Community Centre due to its popularity. However the council determined that, under its event policy, it did not issue permits to recurring events.

A subsequent planning application by the organisers was knocked back because of a lack of infrastructure on the proposed site. “To accommodate a regular food truck event in open spaces or carparks, council would assess things such as waste management, asset management, grounds and amenities access and additional cleaning after hours,” the council’s acting manager of engagement and advocacy, Heidi Taylor said. “On this occasion, the planning permit application was unsuccessful because the locations specified don’t have the infrastructure needed to support the type of crowds an

activation such as this may draw.” Food Truck Park organiser Dotty Hazell said she first applied for permits for the event in April, but only got a definitive answer in recent weeks, leaving her little time to find private land to hold the event on. “The event was more popular than I thought it would be, so we needed a bigger site for car parking and the like,” Ms Hazell said. “I still wanted somewhere central that people could walk to, but don’t want to impact on other food places in Melton, so there’s limited options. “I’d run it well last year so thought it would

Warning as snake season arrives Snake season is in full swing in the west, with land clearing for the West Gate Tunnel revealing a tiger snake double the size of that usually seen in suburbia. Stewart Gatt, aka Stewy the Snake Catcher, was last week called to Spotswood after construction workers saw a large tiger snake under the West Gate Bridge. “We’ve been clearing some snakes up for the guys that are doing the West Gate Tunnel project,” Stewy said. “It was about 1.5, 1.6 metres. They can grow that big, it’s just we very rarely see them that size. “It was halfway down a rabbit hole and when I grabbed its tail and pulled it out, it tried to defend itself.” Stewy said the arrival of spring meant snakes were emerging to find food and a mate. “We have had a few reports,” he said. “As the weather’s warmed up, the snakes are coming out of their brumation. We have caught snakes in Altona, Williamstown, Altona North.” Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act and it is illegal to capture, harm, or kill them. Stewy is bound by law to relocate snakes to a suitable habitat within five kilometres of where they were caught. His advice to people who see a snake on public property is to move away and give the snake plenty of room. “If the snake’s on your property, remove any pets or children out of the way and call a professional snake catcher,” Stewy said. “Don’t try and catch it yourself. “If they do suspect that a pet has been bitten, straight to the vets … Or if a person’s been bitten, call an ambulance. Don’t try to drive yourself to the hospital.”

be OK to run it again, but it took forever to get a straight answer and eventually they said I couldn’t do it.” The summer events featured between eight and 14 food trucks each month, with several hundred people attending each event. Ms Hazell said she was still hoping to hold the event from November, potentially at TabCorp Park or a local school. “I want to find a spot that’s permanent, I want it to find a home,” she said. “It would be great to do it on council land if they changed their policy, and I really want to get it up for this year if I can.”

Keeping a close eye on climate Parks Victoria is urging community members to learn about their local environment and fight climate change by using their smartphones. People can record specific animals and plants they see in parks using the ClimateWatch App, or online via the website www.climatewatch.org.au. ClimateWatch, a citizen science program, was developed to understand how changes in temperature and rainfall are affecting the seasonal behaviour of Australia’s plants and animals. A walk was held in Anakie Gorge recently, during which a dedicated ClimateWatch project officer gave participants training on how to use the app. Parks Victoria education officer James Adams said walks would play an important part in the conservation of a number of local species. “ClimateWatch brings together park visitors, nature enthusiasts, students, contractors, park staff and the community with climate change scientists to tackle the climate change emergency,” Mr Adams said. “Plants and animals need to adapt to survive the changes in Victoria’s rainfall and temperature driven by climate change. They adapt by altering where they live, feed and their phenology (the time of year that they flower, fruit, migrate or breed).” Register at www.climatewatch.org. au/news/climatewatch-guided-trailwalks-1

Seniors get connected Moorabool council is encouraging more older residents to get online, with free digital classes being held at local libraries. As part of the government’s ‘Be Connected’ initiative, the classes aim to increase the confidence, skills and online safety of older Australians when they use the internet. Social Services Minister Christian Porter launched the program recently. “Be Connected is another important step towards the government’s goal to foster digital skills, access and inclusion to empower everyone to thrive in a digital world,” Mr Porter said. “I encourage older Australians who want to learn how to use digital technology confidently and safely, or who want to improve

their current skills, to participate in the Be Connected program.” Ian Blackburn is a volunteer at Lerderderg library every Wednesday from 9am-11am and patiently assists older residents with their IT requests. He has also been running classes in Gordon, Ballan and Bungaree. Mr Blackburn encouraged residents to take up the chance to join the classes, and also encouraged other locals or community groups to consider volunteering to run a class. Mr Blackburn will be at the Moorabool council’s seniors expo on October 10 at the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall from 10am-1pm to answer questions about the classes.

Springside school zone anger By Tate Papworth and Laura Michell Up to 20 students from Springside College in Caroline Springs are fighting a “bureaucratic bungle” which has locked them out of their preferred high school. In 2017 the Education Department announced Springside College would transition from a P-9 school to a P-6 school. Parents say they were told that students affected by the change would be accepted into nearby Springside West Secondary College for three years. However about 20 students this year have been rejected from Springside West because

they fall outside of the school zone. Eva Fattore, whose daughter Erika has been told she can’t attend Springside West next year, said they live just one street outside of the zone. “They have gone back on their promise. It has been a big mess,” Ms Fattore said. “We thought there was a three year agreement so we didn’t look at other schools. If we had known she wouldn’t be accepted we would have looked for a new school.” Ms Fattore said Erika has been told to attend Copperfield College. She said all of Erika’s friends would be going to Springside West. The Department of Education last week

acknowledged a small number of parents may have received incorrect advice relating to Springside West Secondary College accepting all enrolments. According to the department Springside West wrote to Springside P–9 families earlier this year to clarify the school would be managing enrolments in line with the department’s placement policy, and would limit enrolments to the designated neighbourhood zone. Geoff Cain, whose son’s application to Springside West was rejected because the family lives 200 metres outside of the enrolment zone, said his son was stressed about the prospect of attending another school.

“My son will be transitioned to a brand new school where he knows no one,” Mr Cain said. “All the kids are suffering stress and anxiety.” Mr Cain has appealed the decision to the education department. “We have become aware that children who did not attend Springside College have been placed at Springside West on compassionate grounds. We are entitled to ask why the priority order of placement policy hasn’t been correctly applied,” he said. The department said Springside West has been assigned as a designated neighbourhood zone to manage the growth in the area.

Caring for those in need Melton council has partnered with a social that the number of people needing support is service agency to deliver emergency relief for also growing. “For those individuals and families who have local families in need. Council and CatholicCare launched the hit difficult times, emergency relief can help program last week, which will provide financial them to get their lives back on track.” Melton mayor Bob Turner said the council or material aid to help people experiencing hardship resulting from their current life had been advocating for a service like this for some time, and would provide CatholicCare situation or an unexpected crisis event. CatholicCare chief executive Netty Horton with a dedicated office space at the Melton said the organisation provides emergency relief Civic Centre. “This program has been so valuable to people from a number of its offices across Greater Melbourne, however without an existing office experiencing significant hardship or crisis and in Melton, have not have been able to deliver we’re pleased to support CatholicCare in its continuation,” Cr Turner said. services to locals. “CatholicCare is very excited to be Ewen McRae collaborating with Melton City Council,” Ms Horton said. “We are aware that the City of Melton is CatholicCare chief executive Netty Horton, with experiencing rapid growth – and this means mayor Cr Bob Turner. Songbird ready to fly Fourteen years of hard work have paid off for Caroline Springs singer Stephanie Angelini – her debut album was recently released. Angelini flew to Los Angeles to record the album with American producer and songwriter Preston Glass, who has worked with artists such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Lionel Richie. She was given eight weeks to learn a dozen songs written by Glass and fellow songwriter Joe Mandica. The album, Life Lessons, took a week to record. Angelini said creating the album required total dedication and passion. “Once completed, my team and I sifted through the songs and decided eight would make it on the album,” she said. “We then

added a couple more original tunes, a remix and a cover of a Patsy Cline classic. Angelini began singing and performing in school musicals 14 years ago before progressing to amateur theatre. She then began training with Young Talent Time’s Jamie Redfern before being selected to sing the theme tune for Neighbours in 2013. Since then, Angelini has been performing around Melbourne. She hopes the album will allow her to perform around the world. “I hope this album reaches the lives of many people, heals a broken heart, fuels a fire to a budding romance and empowers all,” she said. Road link options on the table By Ewen McRae An update on the proposed Bacchus Marsh Eastern Link Road has been released, with several options on the table to ease congestion around the town. Regional Roads Victoria is undertaking a planning study into the Eastern Link Road, which will connect Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road and Gisborne Road by diverting traffic around the town. Public consultation sessions were held in May, with concern over impacts to the Avenue

of Honour, wildlife, and agriculture among the issues raised. Four plans are under consideration, two of which also had impacts on a proposed development in Merrimu. Three of the four options would cross the historic Avenue of Honour, while the only option that does not impact the Avenue would result in a longer road and is considered to have the most impact on the local environment. More than 230 people attended the community information sessions and Regional Roads Victoria is currently assessing more

than 700 pieces of community feedback to find a preferred route. According to the Regional Roads Victoria study, the population of Bacchus Marsh and Maddingley is expected to double by 2041. “Studies have demonstrated that an eastern

link road will divert heavy vehicles and through traffic away from the Bacchus Marsh town centre,” it stated. “The congestion during peak periods in Bacchus Marsh has resulted in a heavy reliance on Gisborne Road/Grant Street to provide north-south access to the Western Freeway. “An eastern link road will also provide an alternative north-south arterial road connection to Gisborne Road/Grant Street.” There is no funding commitment for the Eastern Link Road, but a preferred route is expected to be presented by February 2020.

Sam’s fitness makeover Samantha Frigo used to eat nothing but pub food and soft drink, but a change in diet and a focus on her health has transformed her life. The Melton 24-year-old has lost more than 30 kilograms in the past 12 months, revolutionising her diet and exercising more to have her feeling better than she ever has. “I manage a pub, so I could get anything I wanted, but I was always tired and was always putting on weight,” she said. “I was the heaviest I’d been, so I decided it was time to do something. I went on Lite n’ Easy, and I started at the gym, and the further I went along and the results started to come the better I felt. “I hated it at the start, but now I go to the gym every day, and the food thing is still difficult because I love food, but when it’s working it’s easy to stick to.” Ms Frigo said the weight loss had better results than she’d expected.

“I was always tired before, but as soon as I started eating good I felt better,” she said. “I was always lethargic, sleeping heaps and napping during the day, but I’ve got so much more energy now and I’m not getting sick as much. “Anyone who’s wanting to lose some weight I’d say don’t go on these huge diets, there’s got to be some balance, otherwise when you stop dieting you’re going to put it all back on again. “I still have days off, I still have the odd pub meal, but it’s not like before and I feel great because of it.” Ewen McRae

Hay, here comes the farm police By Ewen McRae Local farmers will soon have a dedicated law enforcement team to call upon, following an announcement by the state government last week. The government is working with Victoria Police to create a specialised farm crime unit that will work across Victoria targeting farm crime, including livestock and equipment theft. The Farm Crime Coordination Unit will be led by Inspector Karl Curran, who will oversee a team of more than 70 new Farm

Crime Liaison Officers, previously known as Agricultural Liaison Officers (AGLOs) and additional administrative and co-ordination support. Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said the new unit was a direct response to the needs of farmers. “We take this type of offending very seriously – the theft of equipment or livestock can have a huge operational impact on our farmers, on top of the financial burden,” Ms Neville said. “We’ve listened to the increased concerns in rural communities and we’ve acted. The

new Farm Crime Coordination Unit will help centralise Victoria Police’s response to farm crime, while also ensuring the continued presence of Farm Crime Liaison Officers across the state.” “The unit will work directly with Victoria’s farming and agricultural communities and monitor crime trends and patterns to better respond to farm crime.” While farm crime contributes less than one per cent of all offending in Victoria, the latest crime statistics show that in the year to March 30 almost 3600 farm-related thefts were

recorded, with power tools, tools, livestock, and electrical appliances among the top items stolen. The new unit will work closely with and provide advice to Victoria’s farming and agricultural community, and provide intelligence and operational advice to Victoria Police command. The government has also provided $900,000 for the Victorian Farmers’ Federation to work with the farming sector to respond effectively and quickly to animal welfare and biosecurity issues.

Reserve’s renewed life Arbour Boulevard Reserve is set to be transformed into a vibrant community park. The Burnside Heights park is currently just an open space but is being upgraded into a community recreation space, complete with a playground with swings, a seesaw, slide, spinner, log steppers, and even musical instruments. The upgrades will also add an adventure play area, an exercise station, a skate ramp, shelter, barbecue and picnic tables and new paths. Melton mayor Bob Turner launched the works on the site recently, and said residents can look forward to an exciting recreation space right on their doorstep. “An exciting outdoor space has been planned for this reserve and I can’t wait to see it complete,” Cr Turner said. “Together, all the play and leisure elements will create an appealing area for residents in this area to get active and spend some time

outside. “I’m really proud that our partnership with the state government is continuing to provide attractive outdoor recreation facilities in neighbourhoods across the City of Melton.” The $710,000 project is co-funded by Melton council and the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund – each contributing $355,000. Local MP Marlene Kairouz was also on hand to launch the upgrades and stressed the importance of keeping up with the demands of families in the area. “Burnside Heights is the fastest growing suburb in the City of Melton, and it’s really important that we adapt to the new and different needs of those that live in this area,” Ms Kairouz said. The revamped park is expected to be completed by mid-2020. Ewen McRae

These documents can be required for a wide array of personal situations – in one appointment, a JP could be sitting alongside an excited couple signing the contract to buy their first home; in the next they could be witnessing a statement that will be rushed off to court immediately, or certifying visa documents with new Australians.

le in Availab Melton 020 from 2

“I enjoy it. Justices of the peace offer an important service and it’s a great way for me to give back to the community. It’s a nice feeling helping people out.” – Ravi, Justice of the Peace, Melbourne The role of a JP volunteer is primarily focused on: • certifying true copies of an original document • certifying a person’s identity.

• attesting to the execution of a document • witnessing a statutory declaration • witnessing an affidavit for use in court

This work can be done from an office in an official document signing station (DSS), or from your own workplace or home, without major disruption to your day. JPs make themselves available to the public and stakeholders on a regular basis and the workload and times available can be flexible. Typically, members of the community requiring your services will book an appointment and then come to you. Most appointments take just a few minutes. There are DSS’s right across Victoria. DSS’s operate out of local sites such as police stations, libraries, community hubs and more and members of the public attend to have their documents certified. All JPs who would like to volunteer on DSS’s are warmly welcomed. This is a great way to be part of the life of the community.

Traineeships designed for students with a disability or learning difficulty

What qualifications will I need? There are no specific qualifications required to become a justice of the peace in Victoria. However, to be eligible for appointment as a JP, applicants must: • be of or over the age of 18 years • not be an insolvent under administration. • be an Australian citizen

Let us open up the world of work for you!

Applicants must also satisfy the Attorney-General that they: • have satisfactorily completed the course of training prescribed for appointment as a JP. • have sufficient proficiency in the English language to

perform the duties of a JP. • ordinarily reside in Victoria. • are a fit and proper person to be appointed as a JP.

We’re now accepting applications from students aged 16-18 for:

What kind of people make great JPs? While this is an administrative role, you will be working face-to-face with people and not every appointment is always straight forward. That’s why the personal traits listed below are so highly valued when choosing new JPs. Initiative and accountability Self confidence Self-control and discipline

Service focus Conflict management Decisiveness

Drive and commitment Empathy and cultural awareness

• Warehousing Cert II • Warehousing Cert III • Horticulture Cert II

If you have a passion for helping your community, becoming a justice of the peace can be a great way to help people in significant moments of their lives. We hope you consider applying to join our team of honorary justice volunteers. 8 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 1, 2019

It’s also important that our justices of the peace are representative of the residents of our state, so we strongly encourage people of all cultural backgrounds to apply.

Business is swimming in success A pet project has blossomed into a million dollar business for a Hillside woman. Ana Gavia began selling swimwear she’d designed as a side project while she put herself through medical school. With about $200 to her name, she never expected what would happen next. In just two short years Ms Gavia’s business PinkColada has flourished and rakes in $1.5 million a year. “I didn’t think this would turn into anything, I was a uni student with no money, so it wasn’t really something I’d ever thought about,” Ms Gavia said. “But I started posting online, taking out Facebook ads and things like that and quickly realised there was huge interest.” PinkColada has become so big that Ms Gavia has had to defer her studies and admits it’s taken some time to adjust. “I’ve had to get better at delegating. For a while I was trying to wear all hats – accounting, marketing, SEO and the rest,” she said. “But there comes a point where you realise you can’t do everything, which is something every business owner faces.” Ms Gavia was recognised for her success, named the major winner of a competition run by American Express. She will receive a $30,000 business grant and private mentoring with Shark Tank’s Andrew Banks. She plans to put her winnings towards marketing and further growing her business, with an eye on the overseas market. “We expanded to the USA in May this year and the interest there has been even bigger than here,” she said. “We’re actually looking at setting up a warehouse over there.” Details: www.pinkcolada.com Tate Papworth

Storage King’s RSL tribute Staff from Storage King stores across Brimbank, Wyndham and Melton are rolling up their sleeves for a good cause. The company will donate staff across Caroline Springs, Truganina and Hoppers Crossing to man stalls for the RSL’s annual Poppy Appeal. Truganina Storage King manager Priyal Dassanayaka said staff felt compelled to help after reading a Star Weekly article calling for volunteers. “We saw the article calling for volunteers and just knew it was our time to lend a hand,” he said. “This is such a rapidly growing area with lots of people, but there’s not so many volunteers, which is a little sad.” Staff will man stations as designated by RSL staff. “We’re offering up a storage unit if needed and we’ll have staff wherever they need us. The manpower is there, it’s just up to the RSL.” Finding volunteers to sell poppys has been a perennial problem for a number of RSLs, including Caroline Springs. Mr Dassanayaka said the cause was deserving of support. “This isn’t something we want to make too commercial,” he said. “It’s about getting out there, engaging with and helping out our local community.” Volunteers at the Caroline Springs RSL told Star Weekly that an additional six volunteers would make the world of difference.

Directly opposite wide green parkland, in a sought-after pocket of Kurunjang, this large and flawlessly presented house will have families lining up to win the space and quality on offer. It has entry to a generous hallway, with an open tiled lounge room to the right. This reflects the consistent palette of greys and white, with roller blinds which are on most windows – others with venetians or drapes. The hallway flows past carpeted stairs and access to the double garage and through to the expansive living domain. The kitchen in here has a return island bench (beneath a trio of white pendants) for four, white cupboards and french-door pantry accompanied by a wide glass splashback behind a 900mm cooker. The four bedrooms upstairs each have a walk-in robe and cluster around a spacious living room, main bathroom and separate toilet. The large main bedroom, with access to a wide front balcony taking in park views, has an en suite with enclosed toilet. The living domain opens to a return timber deck, covered on one side. The backyard has a large expanse of lawn, trees planted in boxed surrounds, and a storage shed. There’s also side access and space to park a boat or caravan. Kurunjang primary and secondary schools are about six minutes away by car, Main Street shops a bit farther.

19 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 1, 2019

SPORT Saints ready to build on premiership season St Anthonys is excited about the challenge ahead as it returns to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup competition. Having won last season’s Johnstone Shield, the Saints earned promotion back into the top flight – right where they wanted to be. Saints captain-coach Cam Clayton said it was pretty exciting at the club. “It’s been the aim for the last four years,” he said of being back in McIntyre Cup. “We came close against Wallan the previous year and we’ve finally got there. “The vibe among the group is good. It’s a big jump, but they are aware of the jump. “It’s the pinnacle of the GDCA and it’s where you want to play cricket.” Clayton said they were calling on the experience of those who had previously played in McIntyre, including himself. There are a few changes to last season’s side,

which Clayton said wasn’t unexpected. “It was always going to happen,” he said. “We stuck around as a group to get the premiership and success that we wanted.” Those not returning are Simon Blanks who isn’t playing cricket this season, Robert Strugnell (Bacchus Marsh) and John Jensen (Melton) who have joined other clubs. Clayton said they were keen to focus on bringing through the youth at the club. He said two youngsters, Alex Kerr and Conrad Farrugia were two who would get a shot early in the season. Farrugia made consecutive centuries in lower level finals last season. “Alex was in our father-son team last year and made just over 1000 runs for the year in juniors and seniors. He’s 14-years-old. He goes to school in Ballarat and he’s in their first XI and he’s part of the national school boys carnival later this year.

“Conrad made close to 1000 runs as well. They haven’t missed a beat and bring enthusiasm and excitement, they’re looking forward to the challenge.” Clayton said Thomas Stoneham was one recruit for this season, and they are waiting for confirmation about another. The Saints kick off their season on Saturday in a one-dayer against Sunbury United. In other first round matches, Woodend faces Riddell; Romsey plays Diggers Rest Bulla; and Gisborne hosts Bacchus Marsh in the grand final rematch. Eynesbury, which has dropped down to Jensen Shield, starts its season against Woodend, while Aintree takes on Sunbury. Tara Murray Justin Craven will be a key for St Anthonys this season. Storm’s new challenge By Tara Murray Sydenham-Hillside is ready to step up in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 Roy Picone Shield competition. Having won the division 4 premiership last season, the Storm has gone up a grade this season. New president Warren Hackney said they were keen to build on last season. “We’re looking at a new challenge,” he said. “We managed to get pretty much the whole first XI team back and we want to build on that. “Hopefully we’ll be competitive this year and see what happens.” Hackney, who was part of last season’s premiership team, said it would be a little bit of an unknown how the side will go this season, having not faced any of these teams before. He said for them, the biggest worry was to focus on what they could control and go from there. “Hopefully we find ourselves in the mix.” The Storm have a new leadership structure on the field, with last year’s leadership group of Dane Currency and Peter Magafas both on the move. West Indian Alston Bobb will be playing-coach. He’s played a lot of first class cricket back home and is both strong with bat and ball and is known for his spin bowling. Ben Green, who was a standout for the Storm last season, has stepped up to captain the side. “Ben is a local guy and he has stepped up to captain the side,” Hackney said. “He was in team of the year and had a really good season. We’re looking forward to him having a similar season personally and it will help the team. “We’ve got the new leadership structure and we’re confident that it will work well.” In a bonus for the side, Chandima Prasad, who was club champion a couple of the years ago, returns. Hackney said the inclusion of Prasad and Bobb would fill the losses. “We’re looking at making one or two further additions around the next couple of weeks,” he said. “We’re feeling like we’ve prepared well and recruited well.” As well as taking on the president’s role, Hackney will coach the women’s side. It will be a different looking side to the one that has won the past two premierships. “We had some circumstances in the off season with some key personnel departing,” he said. “I felt it was an area that I was comfortable in and that I thought I could contribute. 20 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 1, 2019

“With the loss of personnel, it depleted us somewhat, but we’ve done some work to build the numbers back up. “We’ve lost a bit of experience … We’re not expecting to win flags, it’s about enjoyment and

improvement.” The Storm will field an under-13 girls team for the first time. Hackney said they were still looking for players for their women’s side.

Phoenix ready to rise with new coach New Melton Phoenix coach Darren Traynor is hoping to bring some on-field stability to the club in FFV state league 5 west. Traynor, who has previously coached in the league, was announced as coach last week with David Farmer appointed his assistant coach. Having more recently been involved with youth sides in the National Premier League, Traynor said he was excited to get back into coaching a senior team. “I played with Melton 10 years ago and I enjoyed that year and Melton has always had a soft spot in my heart,” he said. “The opportunity came up and I spoke to [president] Michelle [Williamson]. They reached out and there’s some good people at the club.” Traynor said the focus for him and Farmer was to get the on field stuff right, with a lot of work being put in behind the scenes. The club has appointed a football director, is getting its women’s program back up and running and has tripled the number of juniors at the club. On the field, the Phoenix’s top side has had an up and down couple of years. This year it finished sixth overall, losing just one of its past 12 matches. Traynor said being a growth area, it was an exciting time for the club. “The club has a three year plan and they want to establish themselves,” Traynor said. “It’s been up and down the last few years. The average age is about 23-24. I’m pretty keen to see the youth from Melton come through the system and hopefully get a taste of senior football.” Traynor said his background working with younger players would help with their development. The plan is to do a four week training block before Christmas, which Traynor said would give him a bit of an idea about the group. He said they would look to add in some recruits. The club has already announced the signing of goalkeeper Semir Ekic. Among the focus on recruiting, was trying to bring people back to the club on and off the field. Tara Murray

Bacchus Marsh finds a new Avenue to success It’s been an action-packed off season for Bacchus Marsh Bowls Club. The club has started the process of merging with fellow Bacchus Marsh side, the Avenue. On top of that, the club has decided to take its top side out of the Central Highlands Bowls Division and play in the metro competition, Bowls Victoria pennant. Bacchus Marsh president Phil Minniti confirmed that the merger with the Avenue was happening. Once complete, it means there will be one, not two bowls clubs in Bacchus Marsh. The Avenue currently plays in the Ballarat District Bowls Division, with its top side in the second grade. “It’s full steam ahead,” Minniti said of the merger. “It takes time to get it all right. There’s no reason to rush things.” While the merger is underway, Bacchus Marsh has taken the step to move its top side into the metro competition, while its other two sides will remain in the CHBD. The top side will play in Bowls Victoria

pennant division 2, section 1. Last season, that side won the CHBD division 1 title. Minniti, who plays in the top side, said it was a great opportunity. “It’s what our members want,” he said. “It’s the progression and as Melbourne grows out to Bacchus Marsh, it makes sense to play in the metro competition.” Minniti said reaction to the move had been positive. He said they had attracted some new players to the club and the main attraction was the side was now playing in Melbourne. “It’s pretty positive with the metro side and we’ll give it a good shake. We’re looking forward to the new challenge.” Among Bacchus Marsh’s opponents this season is Melton’s top side. Minniti said there was already a bit of rivalry between the two clubs. “It’s a friendly rivalry with a lot of mates between the two clubs.” Bacchus Marsh’s other two Saturday teams will remain in the CHBD.

Its division 2 premiership side from last season will play in division 1, having earned promotion. The other side will remain in division 3. Minniti said it would be an interesting season in division 1, with the competition now six teams, down from eight – as well as Bacchus Marsh’s top side leaving, Trentham has been relegated while Gisborne’s second side has asked to go down. “It’s going to be a challenging game every week,” he said. “We are expecting to put on a good show.” Bacchus Marsh’s top side starts its season on October 5 against Werribee. The CHBD competition kicks off the following week. Tara Murray

Bulls prepare to defend By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh captain-coach James Lidgett is looking forward to the challenge the new Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup brings. Coming off a second successive top flight premiership, it will be a new-look Bulls side this season. Lidgett said it was a challenge he was looking forward to. “I’m really excited from a coaching point of view,” he said. “It’s a chance to look at some of the younger players coming through, they deserve the opportunity. “It’s why we didn’t go out and grab too many players, we have depth and people are knocking down the door. “They can’t knock on it forever.” A big chunk of last season’s premiership team isn’t returning, which will mean some new faces in the side. Last season’s joint Sullivan medallist for the best player in the competition, Madushanka Ekanayake has crossed to Darley in the Ballarat Cricket Association. Ekanayake has been the star bowler in the competition in his time at Bacchus Marsh. Daniel Lalor is looking to try his talents at Victoria Premier Cricket, which also means his father Peter Lalor can’t commit full-time as he does the driving for his son. Lidgett said Dennis O’Loughlin, Rhys Watson, Mili Sepala and Jared Taylor all look like they aren’t playing this season. Despite the departures, Lidgett said preparations for the season had been really positive. “It’s full steam ahead,” he said. “We’ve had great numbers at training, we had nearly 50 on a work day last week. That is ridiculous. “We’ve got 40-plus a couple of times and we’re looking pretty strong. “We’re looking at fielding six teams. We did flirt with the idea of having seven.” Lidgett was keeping his cards close to his chest in terms of inclusions to the club. The only one he would mention is Kasun Suriaratchie. It was announced in June on social media that he was joining the club. “He played one game in the twos last season,” Lidgett said. “He’s got quite a bit of experience and has just moved locally. “We’re keeping things close to our chest, but he’s one of the bigger ones.” Lidgett said he expected the likes of Lachie Payne, Mace Cousins and Connor Ascough to all push for selection in the senior side. The three youngsters were all part of the club’s second XI grand final side last year. Despite all the changes, Lidgett is confident

they will again be in the mix as they chase a third straight premiership. “I think we will be really strong and we’ll definitely give it a crack,” he said. “We’ll be a little bit more inconsistent. “It is interesting and I don’t mind it myself.

The boys are still keen and hungry and there’s new blood that will want to be up there. “We’ll push hard throughout.” The Bulls face Gisborne in a grand final rematch in round one. The club’s top four sides all face the Dragons to kick off the season.

Diggers Rest will field a women’s football side next year. With a growing demand for more female football teams, the Burras are putting in the work to get a team up and running. Burras president Ben Morse said it had always been the plan to get a women’s team started. “There’s been a youth girls under-18 team and some of them are coming up,” he said. “The junior club has done a great job in getting it up and running. “The basis of the plan all the way along was to then have a women’s team. “We’ve been working on it for a while.” Morse said there had been a brilliant reaction from across the community to the club wanting to expand. He said while they were still looking for more players, they looked like they would have enough to field a side. “I think we’re close to having the numbers we need,” he said. “A few netballers have expressed interest and coming across and playing footy. “We’ve got a strong netball program, so we don’t think it will impact that too much.” Morse said they were in the process of looking for a coach and would look to appoint a female football co-ordinator down the track. Plenty of people had put their hand up to help get the team started and the club’s major sponsor, AVID Property Group, is also on board and providing support. The club will hold an information night in October. For more details: diggersrestfnc@gmail.com Tara Murray 21 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 1, 2019

Big brother Patrol powers on By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Six years ago, Nissan, on the way to the Middle East and the US, dropped off a big brother to its Y61 Patrol large sports utility vehicle. The good news is the Y62 giant is still going; the bad news, there’s still no sign of a diesel option. Capable of carrying up to eight occupants, at more than five metres long and almost two metres wide, the top-of-the-range Ti-L, at $89,880, plus on road costs, can count its closest rival as the Toyota Land Cruiser LC 200 GLX, although the Patrol is more like the Sahara at $115,230. This is the most luxurious and sophisticated Nissan offered in Australia – major gains have been won in fuel efficiency, comfort, luxury, quality and technology, for a top-class drive on and off-road. The 298 kW of power, put through the seven-speed automatic transmission and an electronically controlled, all mode 4WD system, all combined faultlessly to have the Patrol Ti-L test vehicle pushing on with little effort and a lot of composure, while keeping occupants in the comfort to which we could easily have become accustomed. Finally, Nissan has upped the ante with a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty on all new vehicles obtained by private buyers and includes complimentary roadside assistance during that time. The latest Patrol Ti-L (the test vehicle) is no exception to the rule.

Styling

The super-size Patrol Ti-L is no coupe clone, sticking to the traditional square corners of a large SUV. The uncluttered exterior suits the SUV’s intent down to the ground – a smart on-road presence with a no-nonsense

Infotainment

Features across the new Patrol range include Bluetooth hands-free phone, large format front DVD player, 2GB music server with six speakers, iPod connectivity, steering wheel audio controls, intelligent key access. Surprisingly there is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto access but there are dual 7-inch DVD screens in the rear of the front seat headrests.

Safety

Six airbags, including curtain bags covering all three seating rows, are fitted. Active safety features include active cruise control, forward alert, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning and a tyre pressure monitor. capability off road. Wheels follow suit with sensible 18-inch alloys rolling on tall 265/70 tyres, giving the ability to iron out surface defects on the bitumen.

Interior

Touted as having seating for eight in leather seats, the third row offered a tight fit for grown-ups. Up front is unashamed comfort with driver and front passenger positions

having eight-way electric adjustment and heating/cooling. The driver’s seat also has memory pre-sets. Even with the third row of seats occupied there is enough space (550 litres) to stow a full-size cooler in the load bay. There is a deep centre console cool box, a boon on hot summer holiday journeys, taking up space where you find an electric parking brake on many of the latest vehicles. Here instead is an olde-world foot-operated pedal.

Driving

On test there were no surprises with fuel use: up to 18 litres per 100 kilometres consumed in stop/start city work, dropping to an impressively low 10 litres per 100 on the open road.

Summing up

The Patrol Ti-L is for those to whom size matters: those who want a giant shopping trolley; expansive people mover; or sophisticated prime mover that can pull a big boat or float, without paying top dollar. Others need not apply.
