Finding pals in albinism

(Damjan Janevski)

During Pia Robson-Garth’s primary school days, teachers would reserve a spot at the front of the classroom for her. The special treatment led to taunts and bullying from her peers, but if she wasn’t sitting up front she could barely see the blackboard. The Eden Park resident was born with temperature sensitive albinism, meaning she has poor vision typical of albinoids but does have the ability to produce pigment in her hair in cooler parts of the body, such as eyelashes and eyebrows. “I don’t have that strange look that others do, but it means people don’t believe me,” she said of her condition. She struggled to complete exams during school. “As I get tired or stressed my eyes strain and shake,” she said. “It’s like they’re constantly looking for a point of focus but can’t find it.” On Saturday, the 32-year-old change manager sought out fellow albinoids on Facebook to celebrate the very first International Albinism Awareness Day. The United Nations has designated June 13 as a special day to throw light on the often misunderstood genetic condition, which is characterised by a complete or partial lack of skin pigment. Jobs blow for north Woolworths will shed about 680 full-time, part-time and casual staff when its Broadmeadows distribution centre closes in 2018. The supermarket chain announced last week that it will replace its Hume distribution centre in Northcorp Boulevard with a new state-of-the-art grocery distribution centre in Melbourne’s south-east. The exact suburb has not yet been revealed, but the new centre is forecast to open in 2018. Broadmeadows MP Frank McGuire was shocked by the announcement, which he said came out of the blue and without consultation with local stakeholders.

“I’m deeply concerned about Woolworths’ decision,” Mr McGuire said. “This is a looming social disaster if major companies can simply say they have decided to leave without any discussion or negotiation. “This will be a big expense to shareholders. Why couldn’t their issues have been addressed in Broadmeadows?” he asked. “There’s too much secrecy about this. You can’t just treat the community with such disdain.” The Hume site is one of just nine Woolworths distribution centres across Australia servicing more than 800 supermarkets. A new $150 million meat processing centre at Laverton, at least 20 new stores and upgrades to 40 existing stores in Victoria are among the company’s plans for the next three years.

The new semi-automated $350 million distribution centre in the south-east will be the largest single investment in the company’s history. Woolworths has operated its manual distribution centre from leased premises at Broadmeadows for 16 years. Supermarket operations director Pat McEntee said the company would help Hume workers with alternatives over the next three years. A Woolworths spokeswoman was unable to confirm how many of the 340 full-time staff employed at Broadmeadows would keep their jobs. National Workers Union Victorian branch secretary Gary Maas met with the union’s 550 members and Woolworths employees.

“Not only is this a real blow for workers currently working at the distribution centre, it’s a blow for the northern suburbs generally,” he said. “The loss of these jobs has a communitywide effect,” Mr Maas said. “Decent job opportunities will no longer be there for young people entering the workforce. Some families may even have to look at upheaving their lives to find work elsewhere.” The union, Hume council and the state government will work towards helping affected employees retrain and secure jobs elsewhere. Woolworths’ announcement closely follows steel-maker Austube Mills’ plans to close the company’s Somerton site. Come late August, 86 Austube Mills employees will be retrenched.

Fake dentist sparks virus fears By Lexi Cottee Hundreds of patients are at risk of contracting blood-borne diseases after being treated by a fake dentist at Meadow Heights. Victoria’s acting chief health officer Finn Romanes is urging anyone who was treated by self-claimed dentist Muhammet Velipasaoglu to contact the Department of Health and Human Services. Dr Romanes said Mr Velipasaoglu had been practising from his home in Rocklands Rise since 2003 despite not having the formal qualifications in Australia.

“We are concerned that patients who received dental care from this individual at this premises may have contracted a blood-borne infection as a result of poor infection control practices,” Dr Romanes said. “While the risk of the transmission of any infection is regarded as low, we urge any patients to call the department for information and advice.” Dr Romanes said there was a risk of transmission of several blood-borne viruses and singled out hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. The practice was closed down on May 1

following an investigation by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), a government body charged with regulating health practitioners in Australia. Charges have been laid against Mr Velipasaoglu for allegedly pretending to be a dentist and for performing dental acts that only a registered dentist may undertake. The matter will be brought before a magistrates court in the next few weeks. A tip-off from a registered dentist, who was left to clean up the work Mr Velipasaoglu had performed on a female patient, led to AHPRA’s investigation.

AHPRA and Victoria Police executed a search warrant on the Rocklands Rise property and found dental equipment and evidence of poor infection control and hygiene, and potential public health risks. Mr Velipasaoglu had trained as a dentist in Turkey but has never been registered via Australia’s National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. The Department of Health is appealing to anyone who received dental care at Rocklands Rise, Meadow Heights, to phone 1800 356 061 between 8am and 7pm. This is a free-call number and interpreter services will be available.

this month for designing a winning ‘best chemical engineering’ project. The Pratt Prize, named after Professor Henry Reginald Clive Pratt, who was founder of the Victorian IChemE group and a former member of the RMIT department of chemical engineering advisory committee, has Victorian students competing to design the best chemical engineering project. Miss Karacan, Thomas Breadon, Luke Brayshaw, Nebeal Faris, Timothy Hanna and Hang Tran, who are all studying applied sciences, won the prize for their feasibility study of a greenfield mineral processing plant in Colombia. A panel of experienced engineers judged their submission alongside entries from Monash and Melbourne university students.

It wasn’t until Reyan Karacan was in her 20s that she discovered she had a passion for engineering. The bright young fawkner woman, now 24, was studying chemical engineering at RMIT University and decided she would like to work in the oil or gas industries, converting raw material into commodities. “My passion for engineering is hard to explain; it’s not based on liking maths, chemistry or problem solving,” she said. “The concept of converting raw materials into products is what really caught my interest … it amazes me how somewhere deep under the ocean or land crude oil is extracted and then processed into products like petrol.” She hopes to become a process engineer, an ambition helped in no small part by the addition of the Pratt Prize to her resume. Her RMIT group of six received the prize earlier

By Lexi Cottee The Bulla bypass and Melbourne Airport link are a step closer after the projects were endorsed by an independent planning panel. In January, state Planning Minister Richard Wynne appointed three panelists to assess Amendment C190 to the Hume Planning Scheme. This aims to set aside land earmarked for the proposed airport link and Bulla bypass. A report to the minister released last month recommended Amendment C190 be adopted with only minor changes and that the bypass and first stage of the airport link be expedited. But VicRoads suggests these projects could be 15 to 20 years away and are linked to a planned outer metropolitan ring road. “Based on the traffic modelling and other evidence and submissions, the panel recognises the existing road network is constrained and often congested – a situation which residential development and other growth will worsen,” the panelists reported. “Much of the expected extra travel demand pressure will continue to fall on two-lane undivided roads, such as Sunbury Road.” “The panel strongly supports building the Bulla bypass and that part of the Melbourne airport link south of Somerton Road as soon as possible.” The panel said the proposed alignments for the two roads, up to six lanes each, would have the least impact on private properties. Four houses and sheds will be acquired and

(Phil O’Brien, Whittlesea council)

Wait for roads may be decades demolished for the roads projects and there are 37 privately owned land lots affected, 17 of which would be divided into two or more lots by the road reserves. VicRoads will extend the public acquisition overlay to enable road access to Wildwood Winery at 80 St Johns Road, Bulla, but will remove the threat of compulsory acquisition from 1180 Somerton Road, Bulla, to allow the residents to keep their Phillip Johnson-designed front garden, Kerrie O’Riley and his wife, Judith, were

among five residents who opposed the amendment that is before the panel. Their property would be reduced, with 1.1 hectares subject to acquisition, dividing their horse training centre down the middle. Mr O’Riley said while talk of the road projects had been the source of anxiety for some years, the couple were resigned that their home of more than 40 years would be sacrificed. “It’s progress and it makes sense, but any time there’s progress someone gets hit in the neck,” Mr O’Riley said. “I’m 72 now. By the time they get around to it I might be just a memory.” The panel’s report can be viewed online at http://bit.ly/1dy3ZPf.

Pets on the outer More than 1800 Whittlesea pets are now officially unregistered with renewals now two months overdue. Whittlesea council is urging pet owners to pay their registration renewal fees and avoid on-the-spot fines, potential legal proceedings and court-imposed penalties. The council requires dog and cat owners to register their animals from three months of age. The fee for the 2015-16 animal registration was due on April 10 and owners who have yet to pay should already have received a reminder. Now a friendly reminder call from the council will ask them to confirm they still have their pets. Whittlesea mayor Ricky Kirkham (pictured with pooch Teddy) says registering dogs and cats greatly improves their chances of being returned if they are lost. “If you’ve forgotten to renew your pet’s registration or misplaced your renewal notice, it’s not too late to pay,” he said. Vandals back with a vengeance By Lexi Cottee After suffering relatively little parks and gardens vandalism in recent years, Hume has copped a spate of offences across the city in the past few weeks. Vandals broke a locked gate to enter Highgate Recreation Reserve in Craigieburn during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Judging by the tyre marks across the oval, the culprits drove around in circles, tearing up

the turf. Garden beds between the reserve’s two ovals were run over and damaged. It was the second recent attack on Highgate Reserve by vandals, who also struck during the weekend of May 23-24. Barrymore Road Recreation Reserve in Greenvale, Lakeside Reserve in Roxburgh Park, Carrick Drive Reserve in Gladstone Park, parkland along Yuroke Creek in Greenvale and saplings in Craigieburn have been damaged by vandals in the past two months.

Hume council’s John Monahan said people who needlessly destroyed trees cost ratepayers money and harmed residents’ quality of life. “Trees perform a valuable role in our neighbourhoods because they enhance the look and feel of streetscapes, and sustain the health of other plants and animals,” Mr Monahan said. The council operates a tree inspection program and maps more than 166,000 trees. Mr Monahan, the council’s acting

city infrastructure director, said the council inspected more than 80,000 trees each year. More than 4100 requests to prune or plant trees were lodged with the council in the 2013-14 financial year – up on the 4014 it received in the previous year and the 3523 requests lodged in the 2011-12 financial year. Anyone with information about tree vandalism should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Hume council on 9205 2200.

Linked to a better life A partnership between Hume council and courier service TNT Express has secured jobs for 10 unemployed residents. The council’s Local Jobs for Local People program, a free recruitment service that links employers with nearby jobseekers, helped pair the logistics company with the young men. The new recruits, all of whom are under 25, have been employed as cadets, which will see them rotate between roles in the company, from assisting delivery drivers to manning the phones providing customer service and unloading at the docks. Eighteen-year-old Roxburgh Park resident Jordan Verlaque is among the cadets who will be based at Tullamarine, in TNT’s largest depot worldwide. Mr Verlaque, who turns 19 next month, had been unemployed for two months before landing the role with TNT. He had started a carpentry apprenticeship but didn’t enjoy the trade so quit after eight months, only to find himself without income for longer than

expected. “While I was living with my parents, I still had expenses to pay so it was pretty vital I got a job,” he said. Since starting at TNT in April, Mr Verlaque has had a new lease on life. “I’m really enjoying it; I get to try a bit of everything.” Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said landing a job could change someone’s life. “Most of the residents who are now cadets at TNT live in the Broadmeadows, Jacana and Dallas area … one of the new recruits did not have a permanent home, but this job has enabled him to secure an ongoing residence in Roxburgh Park.” The council’s Together 3047 program also helps residents to gain training and employment. Call 9205 2200 or search hume.vic.gov.au/ together3047. Lexi Cottee Deputy mayor Alan Bolton meets cadets employed at TNT Tullamarine. (Damjan Janevski)

The pervasive nature of technology has been a boon for Scouts Victoria, which is fielding enrolments left, right and centre from kids wanting to escape the digital world. A community meeting was held in Epping North last night to talk about the feasibility of forming a new Scout group in the booming suburb due to swelling numbers at nearby clubs. Scouts Victoria’s Whittlesea and Nillumbik district commissioner Marita Bassett said kids were eager to go camping and be active outdoors, which had led to a rapid expansion of the organisation’s footprint in the outer

northern growth corridor. “It seems to be what kids are looking for,” Ms Bassett said. “They don’t want to be sitting in front of screens.” She said there were 14 groups in the north, and the cubs section for children aged eight to and 10 was the most popular. Scouts Victoria will build a Scout hall in the centre of Hazel Glen College later this year. It will be shared with the school during the day and become a hub for scouting activities outside school hours. Lexi Cottee

13 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 16, 2015

SPORT Calder Cannons’ youngsters serve up the right stuff

Tom Wallis tackles Queensland’s Jacob Allison. (Shawn Smits)

Despite TAC Cup results not falling their way, the Calder Cannons continue to show encouraging signs with an eye to the future. Missing several of their top players due to injuries and Vic Metro and VFL commitments, the Cannons were able to stay with a classy Queensland side for three quarters on Saturday. Up against it in the last quarter as the Scorpions kicked with the wind, the Cannons lost 13.8 (86) - 8.11 (59). Cannons coach Andrew Johnston said he thought his side played really well in the first. “We didn’t get reward for effort in the first quarter,” he said. “We needed to get some scoreboard pressure in terms of goals. “They were able to get back into the game in the second quarter. “In the third quarter, they played the way we needed to play in the last quarter. They were

composed and hit their targets and were able to get us on the rebound. In the last quarter, we were pushing up hill with them kicking to the wind.” Johnston said one of the consequences of fielding a young and inexperienced side at this level was that the skills weren’t necessarily as good as those of the opposition. “We know at the moment we tend to fumble a little bit,” he said. “You need to be cleaner at this level, you need to be composed, you have to have smart footballers. “Our guys are still learning that. We were shown up in some of those areas, [but] I will never question their effort.” Johnston said some of the younger players were showing they would be in contention to stay on the list next season.

“Some of the 17-years-olds who have come in over the last month have been really, really good,” he said. “[Jackson] McDonald came in this week and struggled a bit but will be better for it. [Lachlan] Bramble was good last week and was OK today. “Jack Reaper has been good. His opponent kicked one or two goals and it was the same last week. “Unfortunately, Jaidyn Owen, his second game for the year, went down with a shoulder. He should be good and hopefully he comes back.” He said the likes of Ryan Baker, Bramble and Callum Moorfield had two games under their belts and were hopefully getting to grips with “what it takes”. Cloke and swagger at the Eagles By Tara Murray At the end of last football season, Jason and Cameron Cloke sat down and decided they wanted to play football together again. They last played together at Collingwood in 2006 alongside younger brother Travis, but had since gone different ways. And both had been successful, Jason with Western Region Football League side Spotswood and Cameron with Northern Football League side Bundoora. “The first thing we spoke about at the end of last season was about trying to play together,” Jason said last week. “We only have a few years of football left, so we thought ‘let’s have a bit of fun together’.” Despite contemplating playing together at either Bundoora or Spotswood, the two decided they wanted a new challenge and that’s when Essendon District Football League club Craigieburn entered the equation. “Troy [Fidler, Craigieburn football manager] rang me and they were super keen to have a chat,” 30-year-old Cameron said. “We [Jason and Cameron] work together so we had a lot of time to talk and we spoke about wanting to go to a team which had been successful [in the past] and wanted to get back up there. “We wanted to go to a club which wanted to develop younger players, that had a good environment and wanted to improve. “When we spoke to Hally [president Brian Hall], Troy, Fletch [assistant coach Robert Fletcher] and Pete [Bugden, coach], that’s what they pushed. “I loved it and when I walked out of the meeting I was super keen. It has paid off.” Jason, 33, said moving to a new club had refreshed him. “Where we had played we had been successful,” he said. “But we felt we had done all that. It was bit of a challenge, a new environment and a new club. “It’s been grouse. The club is grouse, the community is grouse and everything about it has been good so far. “Coming in from different leagues, we’ve got nothing bad to say about it.” The brothers said the biggest challenge of moving clubs was working together in the same forward line, which was one of the major motivations behind the move. “We have surprised ourselves being able to work together and play footy together,” Jason said. “It’s been the big challenge, as we haven’t really played footy together . . . it’s always been one down back and one forward. “We both wanted to play forward together and kick some goals and have some fun. I think 14 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 16, 2015

late in my career, I didn’t want to go back to the back line.” Cameron added: “Because we’re brothers we know the weakness and strengths already; it was fast-tracked. “We have come to a club which has a power forward who is a small in Fletch [Nick Fletcher]. [Having us there] has given him a chance to do his thing. “We’re the focal point but it gives us freedom as well. As there are other power forwards in the club, we don’t always have to kick the goals.” The brothers sit one and two on the EDFL’s division one goal kicking table, but say there’s no competition between them. Cameron has 34 for the season and Jason 33 after an 87-point win over Taylors Lake on Saturday. “It’s not about who kicks the goals it’s about the process and wins,” Jason said.

Cameron said premierships were the main aim. “The best time in your life is that last game of the year,” he said.. “It doesn’t matter about anything in the season. It doesn’t matter that we haven’t lost a game now . . . we’re only at the halfway mark. “It’s about the last game of the year and holding up that trophy. Then we can celebrate together. “That’s what we’re here for and we’re heading in the right direction on and off the field and really enjoying it.” The arrival of the Clokes hasn’t just refreshed them, but the club as a whole. The Eagles sit 8-0 on top of the ladder. The club had struggled in recent years. “Tucky [Brent Gordon], Jesse Davies and Macca [Christian McErlain] are leaders of the club and even they have a bounce in their step,”

Cameron said. “I think they’re excited the way the footy is going at the moment. “It makes our job easier to have blokes at the club who want to win as much as we do. “They have a new bounce in their step as much as we do and if that’s the positive we bring to the club, I think it’s a good thing.” A premiership isn’t the only thing the brothers want to achieve this season. “I’d like to see a lot of the younger guys pushing up into the ones,” Cameron said. “Every week Fletch and Peter are pushing for them to train with us when we split into groups. “Hopefully, the boys can push up from the under-18’s and play two or three games in the seniors.” As for the possibility of playing with Travis again when his AFL career is over? “I may be done by then,” Jason said. “Hopefully I’ll be coaching him.”

Bloods battle to a win By Tara Murray Although a win was never in doubt, Lalor had to fight to beat bottom-of-the-ladder Mernda in division 2 of the Northern Football League on Saturday. In fact the Demons, still searching for their first points of the season, started the better and led by four points at quarter-time. With both teams coming off a bye, the Bloods finally switched on after the first break and on more than one occasion looked likely to run away with the game. And while Mernda was generally able to keep pace with Lalor, the final minutes of each quarter proved the difference as the Bloods won 17.23 (125) - 9.13 (67). Bloods captain Shannon Smith was happy with the win.

“We were slow [in the first quarter] coming back from the break. It’s hard coming back from the bye,” he said after the game. “As the game went on we switched on and took control. We linked up better and were talking a lot more. “[But] credit to them [Demons], they backed themselves.” Shane Jacobs in the middle and Jason Kelly in the ruck were the best for the Bloods. Smith said that even though his side was second on the ladder, they didn’t want to get too far ahead of themselves. “We’ve got to continue to do one per centers,” he said. For Demons coach Brett Wilson, there were lots of positives from the game. “We never gave up effort,” he said. “We had at least seven under-19’s playing and

with kids you are going to get inconsistency. The instruction was to take the game on and take risks and play with a bit of speed.” It has been a tough start to the season for the Demons, who are the only division 2 team without a win. “It has been a challenge,” Wilson said. “Injuries are taking their toll and we had about eight players missing [on Saturday]. “We had a lot of retirees, players going overseas and were hurt by the money factor. “Once the first win comes it will start to flow on. We need to play for four quarters. “[Relegation] is at forefront of the mind. We are just concentrating on the first win and educating the team.” Thomastown and Whittlesea were among the other winners in division 2, while Epping won in division 3.

Roxburgh Park holds its ground Roxburgh Park continues to rack up the wins in the middle of the Essendon District Football League division 2 table. The Magpies have struggled with injuries but have won enough matches to be third on the ladder and are only a game behind second. On Saturday, they faced Coburg Districts, one of the sides jostling with them on the ladder. Seven points separated the two teams at half-time, before the Magpies kicked away in the second half to win 12.24 (96) - 7.9 (51). Coach Paul Derrick said it was a tight contest in the first half. “Our kicking in the first half let us down a bit,” he said. “After half-time everything went our way … hopefully we are getting on track.” Jayden Walker kicked two goals in a best-on-ground performance while Bradley Dimech and Reece Tarczon were among the best. Derrick said that given the number of injuries the side had suffered early in the season, he was happy with where the Magpies were sitting. “We are getting better and we are starting to get guys back,” he said. “We were still missing five guys from the senior side. We’ve been able to play some young players, like Luke Capuano.” In the next two weeks, the Magpies will play Moonee Valley and Jacana – second and fifth on the ladder. “If we want to play finals, we have to beat these sides,” Derrick said. “They both beat us when we played them earlier in the season.” Jacana is full of confidence after a result the likes of which has not been seen at the club in many years. After kicking 11 goals in the first quarter against Burnside Heights, the Jaguars won 36.16 (232) - 4.4 (28). The Jaguars’ win was small in comparison with that of Greenvale in premier division – it won 48.17 (305) - 1.6 (12) over Northern Saints. Tara Murray
