Doreen star’s Euro mission
(Joe Mastroianni)
Doreen schoolgirl Jael Wena will give the biggest performance of her life this Sunday when she steps on to the stage at Junior Eurovision. The 12-year-old has been chosen to represent Australia at the song contest in Belarus that is expected to be watched by more than two million people. Jael was selected as Australia’s contestant after winning the Fast Track Talent Showcase three years in a row. The Hazel Glen College student said she was “grateful” to have been selected. “When I found out, I was screaming,” she said. “It feels amazing. I can’t believe I [was] chosen to represent Australia for this big event.” Jael has been singing for as long as she can remember and wrote her first song aged four. The talented singer was also part of the Hazel Glen College choir and performed in the school’s production of The Sound of Music earlier this year. “I enjoy showing my talent to other people and showing them my potential,” she said. Jael will perform the song Champions, which was written for her by MSquared Productions. Junior Eurovision will be broadcast on ABC Me on November 26 from 6pm. Laura Michell
Children’s hospital pledge By Laura Michell Labor has pledged to build a children’s emergency department at The Northern Hospital if it wins Saturday’s state election. The hospital will be one of five to have its emergency department reconfigured or expanded to create a dedicated children’s space, which is expected to be completed by 2022. Close to 20,000 children are treated each year at The Northern Hospital’s emergency department. Meanwhile, the Liberal Party will be without
a candidate for the marginal seat of Yan Yean after an anti-Muslim video featuring candidate Meralyn Klein surfaced last week. The video featured Ms Klein being interviewed by the Australian Liberty Alliance’s Avi Yemini. In the video, Ms Klein spoke about an alleged attack outside a restaurant she used to own. She claimed two teenage boys used to harass and threaten her family, before attacking her one night. “They threw me to the ground, dragged my arm and then proceeded to drag me through
the dirt, tearing the tendon in my shoulder,” she said. “I was a bit bloody and bruised and my clothes were torn.” Ms Klein did not mention religion in the video. She said the boys were “of a culture who didn’t accept white Australian women”. The video featured graphics claiming the boys were Muslim and ends with the hashtag #MUSLIMBAN. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said the party asked for Ms Klein’s resignation within an hour of finding out about the video.

“[Ms Klein] made a video, some of the material of which was grossly inappropriate,” he said. “[The video was] for another political party, one I might add we are putting last.” Ms Klein’s Liberal Party campaign page has been removed. However, she will still appear on the ballot paper for Yan Yean as she resigned after nominations were closed. Labor MP Danielle Green holds Yan Yean by a margin of 3.7 per cent. Ms Klein did not respond before Star Weekly went to print.

Upfield line getting short shrift By Laura Michell The Upfield train line must be duplicated between Gowrie and Upfield stations and extended to Craigieburn and Wallan as soon as possible, according to a new northern suburbs transport alliance. The recently formed Upfield Transport Alliance is using the state election to put pressure on politicians to improve the quality of services on the Upfield line, which has been plagued by short-shunting of services, leaving commuters north of Coburg stranded.
In September alone, 35 trains were short-shunted – a term for when trains are turned back before reaching their final destination. Upfield commuters also face long waits between trains, with services running at 18-minute intervals during peak periods. The line has just eight morning and eight afternoon peak services – the lowest on the network. The Upfield Transport Alliance, which brings together transport groups and residents associations from Hume and Moreland,
recently held a rally at Upfield station to draw attention to their campaign. It was attended by about 100 people. Alliance member and Broadmeadows resident Sheriden Tate said Upfield commuters were without access to “high quality” transport. “It’s ludicrous in this day and age that you have a single track line [from Gowrie to Upfield],” she said. “If there is a cancellation, you have got a long wait for the next train. I’ve had issues with my kids when they were younger going into the city and trains being cancelled.
“As a parent it is very stressful.” Ms Sheriden, who is also the Greens candidate for Broadmeadows, said the alliance believed extending the line to Craigieburn and eventually Wallan, via Somerton, would make a big difference to people living in the north. The group also wants a station to be built at Campbellfield in the near future. The station is included in the Greater Broadmeadows Framework Plan which was created by the Victorian Planning Authority and Hume council, but won’t be built for 15-20 years.
Commercial Hotel quits bid for pokies

Everything is coming up roses Bulla’s Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden is in full bloom as it celebrates its 21st anniversary. The Green Street garden is dedicated to the work of Australia’s most prolific rose breeder, Alister Clark who bred 128 different roses in Bulla between 1912 and 1949. The garden also holds the largest collection of Alister Clark roses in the world.
Hume mayor Carly Moore said the garden was one of Hume and Melbourne’s hidden treasures, nestled between two bluestone buildings at the top of the Bulla hill. “If you haven’t experienced this beautiful garden yet, it is certainly worth a visit and even if you have enjoyed the garden before, there is always something new flowering,” she said.
“Hume City Council and a dedicated team of volunteers have worked hard over 21 years to create and maintain this beautiful garden.” Entry to the garden is free and it is open every day during daylight hours. Details: hume.vic.gov.au/attractions
A two-year battle to bring poker machines to South Morang’s Commercial Hotel has come to an end, with the venue’s owner withdrawing its Supreme Court appeal. Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group lodged the Supreme Court appeal earlier this year after an appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal was rejected. The ALH Group’s original application was knocked back by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation in December, 2016, amid objection from Whittlesea council and the community. The council then refused a planning permit for the poker machines in 2017. The company appealed the commission’s decision at VCAT, resulting in an 11-day hearing in the second half of 2017. But in December, 2017, VCAT senior members Jonathan Smithers and Rachel Naylor upheld the commission’s decision, raising concerns about the negative impact of gaming machines. The Plenty Road pub currently does not have any gaming machines. The application sought to relocate 20 machines from other ALH Whittlesea venues to the Commercial Hotel and to install 20 new machines. Whittlesea mayor Lawrie Cox said the appeal withdrawal was a “significant” outcome for the community. “The successful outcome is the result of a collective effort from community, health and human service organisations and council,” he said. More than 120 community groups, including a historical society, will share in more than $380,000 from Hume council. The funding will be provided to the groups as part of the council’s 2019 community grants program. Among the recipients was the Craigieburn Historical Interest Group, which will receive $1000. The group, which formed 20 years ago and is based at the Newbury Child and Community Centre, will use the grant to help with its efforts to record local history. Other recipients include the Campbellfield Heights Primary School community hub, which received funding for its playgroup program, and the Sunbury U3A, which was
given a grant for a ballroom dancing event. Mayor Carly Moore said Hume was fortunate to have many active, dedicated and diverse local groups working to make Hume a great place to be. “Through the community grants program, we are able to provide a funding boost that supports these groups to build on their success and pursue new opportunities, she said. The council also provided three groups with multi-year grants. Among the recipients was Campbellfield’s Second Chance Animal Rescue which will use the funding to educate and assist disadvantaged community members to care for their pets.
Whittlesea residents are being encouraged to have their say on netball and basketball facilities in the municipality. The council is creating a Whittlesea Netball and Basketball Plan, that will determine if additional facilities and improvements are required to meet the long-term demand for both sports. Prism Park boost
Epping North’s Prism Park is set to be redeveloped next year. The community has been lobbying for improvements at the Shields Street park, after funding for its upgrade was removed from the council’s 2017-18 budget and allocated to another project. The redevelopment will now begin next year and will include the installation of a shelter with picnic seating, public toilets, a drinking fountain and an additional gate to access the tennis courts. Supermarket chain faces hurdle By Laura Michell Whittlesea council is calling on Planning Minister Richard Wynne to reject German-based grocery chain Kaufland’s plan to build a supermarket on High Street in Epping. Kaufland plans to open six stores across Melbourne and has requested that Mr Wynne change the planning scheme provisions for the sites. An advisory committee has been set up
to provide the minister with recommendations about the suitability of the proposed changes. Kaufland wants to build a store on the former Bunnings site at 592-624 High Street. Development in this area of Epping is guided by the Epping Central Structure Plan which advocates for mixed use and high density developments. The council is concerned Kaufland’s proposal is not in keeping with the structure plan. It will make a submission to the advisory committee
voicing its opposition to the proposal in its current form. Cr Sam Alessi said that if the committee approves the planning scheme provision changes for Epping, Mr Wynne should reject it. “If this proposal goes through, it will cut off all the planning this council has done for Epping Central. It will fly in the face of pre-planning,” he said. In a report to last week’s council meeting, council officers said they would ask the
committee for a master plan to demonstrate how Kaufland’s proposal would accommodate the structure plan and integrate with surrounding developments. The committee will hold public hearings this week before making its recommendations to Mr Wynne. Kaufland is also proposing to open a store at 1550 Pascoe Vale Road, Coolaroo. A date is yet to be set for the committee to begin accepting public submissions about this site.
It’s game on for Doreen Primary Budding video game designers from Doreen Primary School are putting their design and coding skills to the test at a national competition for student filmmakers, animators and game developers. The Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI) hosts the national competition, Screen It, each year. This is the fourth time Doreen Primary School has entered the competition, with its entries taking out the top prize on two previous occasions. This year, a group of pupils has created a hand-drawn video game about a llama that wandered too far. The pupils learnt to code, write a story and develop characters in order to create the video game. Their entry is one of five finalists in the year 5-8 video game category, with the winner to be announced on Friday. Laura Michell

Candidates all set for election By Laura Michell Thirty-one candidates, including a Whittlesea councillor, have nominated for the state election across Whittlesea and Hume’s five electorates. Thomastown voters will have the greatest choice with nine candidates contesting the seat. It is held by Labor MP Bronwyn Halfpenny by a margin of 28.4 per cent, making it the safest Labor seat in the state. Among the candidates is Whittlesea
councillor Alahna Desiato, who is standing as an independent. Cr Desiato said she was contesting the election because she wanted to make a positive change. Thomastown’s other candidates are the Animal Justice Party’s Tess Nagorka-Tsindos, Ms Halfpenny, the Reason Party’s David Thirkettle-Watts, independent Ibrahim Saba, Liberal Gurdawar Singh, Victorian Socialists’ Kath Larkin, the Greens’ Cynthia Smith, and independent Nikola Stavreski. In Yan Yean, the candidates who are
contesting the marginal seat held by Labor MP Danielle Green are: Australian Liberty Alliance’s Siobhan Brown; Labour DLP’s Arthur Bablis; independent Munish Bansal; Ms Green; Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party’s David Snelling; The Greens’ Hugh McKinnon and independent Yassin Akram Albarri. Meralyn Klein was disendorsed by the Liberal Party last week after being forced to resign. Five candidates are contesting the safe seat of Mill Park: Animal Justice Party’s Marcia Simons, incumbent Labor MP Lily D’Ambrosio,
Victorian Socialists’ Nicholas Reich, Liberal Lakhwinder Singh, and the Greens’ Alexander Edwards. Yuroke will be contested by five candidates: Independent Golda Zogheib, the Greens’ Louise Sampson, Victorian Socialists’ Emma Dook, incumbent Labor MP Ros Spence, and Liberal Jim Overend. The Broadmeadows electorate will be contested by four candidates: Incumbent Labor MP Frank McGuire, Victorian Socialists’ Jerome Small, the Greens’ Sheriden Tate, and Liberal Jenny Dow.
Councillor makes brief return
Labor makes schools pledge
Whittlesea councillor Mary Lalios has returned to council for the first time since April. Cr Lalios made a brief appearance at last Tuesday’s council meeting, staying 15 minutes. She was present to hear questions from the community and petitions but left the meeting before the council dealt with its first report from officers. Cr Lalios last attended a council meeting on April 3 and has made a WorkCover claim. Her absence has been a contentious issue among councillors, with some questioning why she is able to perform her duties as Municipal Association of Victoria president while absent from council. Under the Local Government Act, a person ceases to be a councillor if they miss four consecutive ordinary council meetings without obtaining leave from the council. Laura Michell
Six new schools will be built in Hume and Whittlesea over the next four years, if Labor is re-elected on Saturday. The party has pledged to build Greenvale North West, Merrifield West, and Edgars Creek primary schools by 2021, followed by Greenvale Secondary School, Kalkallo Common and Wollert East primary schools by 2022. Four other schools – Aitken Hill, Ashley Park and Beveridge West primary schools and Craigieburn Secondary School – are also under construction and are scheduled to open in 2019 and 2020. Cr Mary Lalios returned briefly for a Whittlesea council meeting last week. (Damjan Janevski)

Residents enlisted in drug fight By Laura Michell
Powering up and up … Epping’s Andrew Talbot will be racing up the 88 floors of the Eureka Skydeck this Sunday while dressed as the PWS Power Ranger to raise awareness of a rare genetic condition. Mr Talbot will don a morph suit for the gruelling 1642-step climb to shine a light on Prader-Willi Syndrome, which affects the daughter of a close friend. The non-inherited genetic condition can cause small hands and feet, abnormal growth and body composition, weak muscles, intellectual disability and extreme obesity. Children with the condition develop slower than other children and face a multitude of health problems. Mr Talbot first started wearing a morph suit when he ran as a way to have a bit of fun. But after his friend’s daughter was diagnosed with PWS, he decided to turn the suit into a PWS Power Ranger costume. “There are no charities or government backing for the condition,” he said. “All the fundraising for research is from family and friends of people with the condition. “This is sort of my way to raise awareness – by being a character that is easily identifiable.” It will be the second time Mr Talbot has completed the Eureka stair climb in the morph suit.

Whittlesea residents are being asked to dob in a dealer. Crime Stoppers Victoria and police launched Whittlesea’s Dob in a Dealer campaign earlier this month. The nationwide Dob in a Dealer program, funded by the federal government, is aimed at stopping the supply chain of illicit drugs including methlyamphetamine (ice), cocaine, MDMA, heroin and cannabis. Whittlesea Inspector Andrew Falconer said it was important that the community did its part to help fight importing, manufacture and supply of illicit drugs. Crime Statistics Agency data reveals that in the 12 months to June 2018, there were eight drug dealing and trafficking offences recorded in Whittlesea and four drug cultivation and manufacturing offences. “We’re not asking you to tell on your friends,” Inspector Falconer said. “We are focusing on those people who are profiting off the addiction and suffering that illicit drug use brings. To do this we’re asking you to support your friends, family and colleagues by submitting your anonymous reports through Crime Stoppers. “You don’t have to have the complete story. Your small piece of information could be the missing piece of the puzzle.” Crime Stoppers Victoria chief executive Erika Owens said drug-related criminal activity cost millions of dollars in healthcare, law enforcement and lives. “Together, we can make our community a safer place to work and live,” she said. “We know that information from the community helps to solve crime.” Dob in a Dealer: 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au

Mernda street tribute for Anzacs By Laura Michell A Mernda development will pay tribute to the Anzacs, naming streets and a pocket park in honour of the Gallipoli campaign. As part of a project for the centenary of World War I, streets in the Regent Views development have been given names that commemorate veterans and the localities of important battles. Three streets have been named in honour of Victoria Cross recipients – Shout, Throssell
and Tubb streets. The Victoria Cross is the highest Australian honour for acts of bravery in war time. Five streets have been named for battles – Lone Pine Drive, Mortar Ridge, Plugges Street, Popes Avenue and Shrapnel Road. The estate will also feature a pocket park with a commemorative plaque listing all the men who were awarded the Victoria Cross from Gallipoli. Whittlesea mayor Lawrie Cox said the

Year 6 pupils Max and Kean and year 5 pupil Mischa will join Team Victoria at the championship track and field events, which will be held in Melbourne from November 23-27. The trio earned a place in the team after excelling at the School Sport Victoria track and field championships in late October. Mischa came third in the 10-year-old girls discus. Kean finished second in the 11-year-old boys 100 metres and third in the 11-year-old boys 200 metres. Max finished first in the 12-year-old boys 100 and 200 metres. Teacher Shannon Carroll said it was the first time the pupils had qualified for Team Victoria. “Mischa, Kean and Max have been working

SPORT AFL spotlight on young guns from the north Tom McKenzie and Justin McInerney are the Northern Knights’ best two chances of being drafted in next week’s AFL draft. The two, who were among the standouts for the Knights this year, have caught the eyes of several clubs in the lead-up to the draft. Knights’ coach Justin Wenke said both boys had spoken to a number of clubs in the past few months. The national draft will be held over Thursday night and Friday, before the rookie draft later on Friday. “We’ve got two boys on the radar, Tom and Justin,” Wenke said. “They are new boys in the program the last couple of years.” McKenzie is the most likely of the two to be selected, having been chosen to attend the AFL draft combine. Wenke said McKenzie’s football had improved in the past 12 months.
“Tom played some really good football as a bottom-ager for us last year,” he said. “He played [Vic] Metro this year and had a really strong season with us. “There’s a lot of interest from clubs about him.” McInerney came through the Knights’ system a different way, only joining the club as a top-age player this year. Wenke said McInerney was a little underdeveloped at the bottom-age level and had taken some time to come through. He said McInerney had a lot of upside and the skills that AFL clubs are looking for. “He was a new player this year,” he said. “We weren’t sure last season he had the physical strength to play TAC Cup level football. He played school footy and continued to improve. “He got an opportunity in the pre-season and when he was available, he made an impact.
“His kicking, running and dash really elevated him.” Wenke said they expected McInerney to be a late draft pick or taken in the rookie draft, with four to five clubs showing interest. Wenke said outside of those two, skipper Braedyn Gillard loomed as the player to most likely be a draft bolter. Gillard’s draft chances were harmed when he missed a large chunk of this year with an elbow injury. “He’s a workman-like player,” Wenke said. “He got injured, but was able to play the last few games. “He would more likely be a rookie choice if he was selected.” For more details on the draft, go to www. starweekly.com.au/sports. Tara Murray
Cannons in draft sights By Tara Murray The Calder Cannons are hoping that at least four, if not more of its players are taken in the AFL drafts next week. While the Cannons didn’t have the best year in the win-loss column, a number of players have put themselves on the radar of AFL clubs. The national draft will be held over Thursday night and Friday, before the rookie draft later on Friday. Cannons’ coach Ross Smith said they would be happy to get four players chosen and ecstatic if a couple of others found their way onto AFL lists. Midfielder Rhylee West seems the most likely to be selected. The likely frontrunner appears to be the Western Bulldogs, who can take him under the father-son rule. Rhylee’s father, Bulldogs’ legend Scott West, played more than 300 games for the club. Smith said West was in the Jack Viney mould of player. Curtis Taylor appears to be the next on the list, with the Keilor product thriving at both TAC Cup and Metro level. “Curtis has had a good year,” Smith said. “Whether it’s in the midfield or forward he’s equally as good and you can say the same about Rhylee for his size. “I’d say Curtis is in the [Mark] LeCras type of player.” Smith said the Cannons were still hopeful that co-captain Jack Bytel would get selected despite a back injury derailing his year. Smith said without the injury, Bytel would have likely been a high pick. “He can play back, mid and forward,” Smith said. “He was really good this year. He was always at training and in the coaches box with me on the weekend. “There are some concerns with his back. He was seen as a first round pick, but will slip further down.” Bytel’s good mate and co-captain Mitch Podhajski is the other the Cannons believe is a good chance of being selected. Podhajski missed out on being drafted last year and put his head down this season, taking out the Cannons’ best and fairest award. He also played several VFL matches for Coburg. “I don’t think I’ve seen a better leader at his age take control of a group,” Smith said. “He was instrumental in the development of our group. “He played off half-back last year and as a forward and mid this year. I find it hard to believe he played as a back, as he played so well as a forward and mid. “He’s really smart and in the mould of a modern day midfielder.” 18 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 20, 2018

Rivergum is well on its way to victory against Heidelberg West in the North Metro Cricket Association Jika Shield. The Kookas bowled Heidelberg West out for just 128. In reply, the Kookas were 0-26 at stumps. Bundoora Park has set Keon Park a big chase in their match. Bundoora Park made 9-248 from its overs. In the Kemp Shield, the Lalor Warriors made 301 against Preston Himalayan.
NWMCA
There was plenty of runs in Gladstone Park and Burnside Springs United’s North West Metropolitan Cricket Association George Luscombe Shield match. Gladstone Park made 348 in just 64.4 overs on the back of 163 from Kaluwahandi Prasad. Burnside Springs United had to face 16 overs before stumps and finished 0-65. Northern Lions have conceded first innings points against Kealba-Green Gully. The Lions were bowled out for 80, before Kealba-Green Gully finished day one at 7-177.
VTCA
The veterans stood strong for Westmeadows against Keilor Park in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Tony Isaacs Shield division 1 north competition on Saturday. Captain-coach Tarek Moughanie (102) and Darrel Brown (71) put on 181 to help the Warriors make 298. Keilor Park finished on 1-24. Craigieburn made 154 against St Francis de Sales. In division 1 west, Tullamarine has already claimed first innings points against Deer Park. The Demons bowled Deer Park out for just 41. Tullamarine then made 138. Deer Park is 1-12 in its second innings. Greenvale Kangaroos are 1-4 in reply to Aberfeldie’s 228.
Premier cricket
It was a tough weekend for Greenvale Kangaroos in Victorian Premier Cricket against Northcote. The Kangaroos were bowled out for 200. Northcote made 5-266 before sending the Kangaroos back in. They finished 5-166 in their second innings. Curtis Taylor is one possible Cannon who could be drafted. (Mark Wilson)
Lachlan Sholl, Sam Graham, Ty Browning and Jake Riccardi are the other players who could be drafted or rookie listed. Daniel Hanna could be drafted or selected by Essendon where he is part of the club’s Next-Generation
Academy. Possible Essendon father-son Mason Fletcher decided not to nominate for the drafts, after missing most of season through injury. In other Cannons news, Chris Johnson has taken on the role of interim talent manager.

Turkish international signs on to help United advance Whittlesea United has pulled off one of the signings of the FFV state league off season, with former Turkish international Ersan Gulum named as the club’s playing coach for next season. Gulum’s signing is another boost for the club which won the state league 2 north-west title this year. It will play in state league 1 north-west next year, only two years after playing in state league 3 north-west. United vice president Goksal Guler said it was exciting to have someone of Gulum’s experience at the club. Gulum was born in Australia and played in Melbourne’s north-west growing up, including at the club that is now known as Hume City.
He played for Australia’s under-23 team, before playing seven internationals for Turkey’s men’s side. “To be honest, he approached us by his own accord,” Guler said. “He heard what we were trying to do and wanted to give back to grass roots football. “There’s a bit of lack of development in this country and he wants to share the knowledge that he has.” Guler said it was very humbling that Gulum had noticed what the club had been doing the past couple of years and wanted to get involved. He said Gulum wanted to help with the long term future of the club and hopefully eventually help it move into the National Premier League. The club has also announced the signing of
goalkeeper Savas Ozdemir, who also played in Turkey. Ozdemir said he was keen to join the club, knowing that Gulum was on board. Guler said Ozdemir will also add experience to the squad and help teach the next generation of goalkeepers. Guler said the two big name signings was enough and the club wouldn’t look to add too many more players. “We want to give the current group the best opportunity,” he said. “That’s how we’ve had success the last couple of years. “We’ve kept the same guys and don’t want to change it too much. “We think we have the group that can challenge in state league 1.”
Guler said he expected Gulum’s technical knowledge and motivational ability to play a big role in helping the side. “We think it’ll increase us by five to 10 per cent,” he said. “You’ve got someone who has played professionally. Even just watching him and the way he talks and approaches training will help the players.” As well as being player-coach for the senior side, Gulum will be involved with the junior development at the club. He’ll be special guest, along with another former Turkish international Gulcan Koca, at a clinic being held by the club next month. Tara Murray
Ayres joins elite crew By Tara Murray Plenty Valley’s Sean Ayres joined rare company at the weekend when he played his 300th first XI Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association match. The star all-rounder became just the 14th player in subbies history to reach that milestone. Ayres’ subbies career has spanned three clubs and more than 20 years, having previously had a stint at Premier club Collingwood. Speaking before the game, Ayres said the milestone had lured him on to play this season. “I’m pretty chuffed,” he said. “It’s been a long time, 21 or 22 years playing subbies. It’s a good milestone, knowing that only 13 other blokes have played it. “When I played 200 I thought that would be a big enough feat to play 200 games. “To get to 200 and still feeling OK and then go that extra 100 games, I’m chuffed I got there.” Ayres started his subbies career with Ivanhoe, before spending time with Malvern and then moving to Bundoora Old Paradians, which is now known as Plenty Valley. He said he had plenty of good memories from all three clubs and kept in contact with a lot of former teammates. “I think it’s my 11th season at Plenty Valley and I’ve won two flags,” he said. “At Malvern, to win a flag and at Ivanhoe to win a flag [is pretty special]. “I’ve made a lot of friends over the time, some great players. I’m proud of the association to go 108-109 years and to still be going strong.” Ayres said when he came to Plenty Valley 11 years ago, he thought he may have had five or six years left in his subbies career. While there had a been a few changes at the club during his time, he said they were a passionate group of people, led by president Darren Callahan. He said one of the most pleasing things was that he had earned the right to play 300 games, and was not gifted games. “I thought I might play for five or six years,” he said of the Bats. “I started bowling those … stupid slower balls. If I kept bowling pace, I would have retired five years ago.” Ayres said one of his biggest things was making sure they were bringing the young guys through and giving them the opportunity. While his mind is still willing and able, Ayres said his body was starting to pack up and this was likely to be his last season. “I started with 100 in our first round and thought maybe I’ve still got a little bit more left in me. “I’m pretty sure I’m through … that’s what I’ve been starting to think.” Ayres said he would love to coach at some stage, but was unsure whether it was possible at the moment with work commitments. Ayres was able to contribute for the Bats as they defeated Brunswick at the weekend. Returning after missing two games while on holidays, Ayres took 3-11 off 17.2 overs. The Bats made 202 in reply to Brunswick’s 145. Callum Nankervis made 122, while Ayres contributed eight.
