Grease is the one they want Grease is the word at St Monica’s College this month. Students are perfecting their lines, practising their dances and warming up their vocal chords for the school’s production of the timeless classic on June 20-22. More than 100 students are staff are involved in the production of Grease, taking on acting, production, front of house and band roles. Principal Brian Hanley said the school’s annual production is a major event for the college community. “Considerable time goes into this production and I applaud all of the staff and students involved,” he said. “Theatrical extravaganzas like Grease give our students a wonderful opportunity to develop and display their talents whether as an actor or one of the many off-stage roles that are so important in a production of this size. “We are looking forward to showcasing our fantastic students to the local community.” Grease will be performed at the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre, Ferres Boulevard, South Morang. Tickets are available by calling 9409 8800.

Country fest cash switch By Laura Michell Whittlesea council has had a change of heart over funding for the Whittlesea Country Music Festival, allocating $40,000 for the event in its 2019-20 budget. The council shocked the festival’s volunteer committee in March when it decided to axe funding for the annual event, which attracts country music fans from across Victoria and Australia. The council had been providing $70,000 a year to the festival for 19 years. The Whittlesea Country Music Festival was

one of six events to have its recurrent funding cut to allow the council to introduce a new event funding program. The new program will offer funding in two categories. Category one funding will provide up to $2000 to small neighbourhood gatherings, while category two funding will provide up to $20,000 for larger events. Applications will need to be made annually, with the Whittlesea Country Music Festival eligible for up to $20,000. The country music festival committee said the future of the event was uncertain following the funding cut.

But last week, councillors voted to include $40,000 for the 2020 festival in the council budget, following a submission from the festival committee, letters of support from community groups and a petition signed by 108 local businesses calling for funding to be reinstated. The committee had asked the council to provide it with $210,000 over three years. Cr Emilia Lisa Sterjova said funding for the festival had been a contentious issue. “It was never my intention as an individual councillor not to allocate funding to that festival,” she said. “I absolutely see the huge

array of benefits it provides to our community, particularly to the Whittlesea township, making it such a wonderful tourist destination.” Whittlesea Country Music Festival committee vice-president David Watson said that while the committee was grateful for the $40,000, the need to apply for funding annually would harm the festival. “The process of applying for a budget submission and subsequent grant application adds layers and time to festival planning and we will be unable to book and secure artists and commence festival planning until our funding is 100 per cent secured,” he said.

Revamp plan for kinder hours By Laura Michell

All’s well for Doreen market A market offering everything from gut health help to remedial massage and yoga is coming to Doreen. The Zenith Network, which runs health and wellbeing markets in Coburg and Collingwood, will run a monthly market at Brookwood Community Centre featuring 50 stalls, live music, health professionals, wellness workshops and kids activities. Zenith Network founder Christopher Irving said he hoped the market would positively influence community health and wellbeing. “This dedicated wellness market is more of an experience where you can attend a wellbeing workshop on anything from gut health to hip-hop yoga, [and] chat and interact with qualified health practitioners,” he said. Mr Irving said Doreen was chosen as the network’s third location because the outer north was calling out for “something of city quality in the suburbs”. He said the markets started two years ago as a way to increase exposure for the network’s health practitioners. “It has grown into something beyond what we ever expected,” he said. The market will be held on Sunday, June 30, from 2.30-6.30pm. Details: thezenithnetwork.com.au CHRISTOPHER IRVING

A year of kindergarten could be condensed into three terms at Bundoora’s McLeans Road Kindergarten to pave the way for a redevelopment. Whittlesea council originally planned to close the kindergarten for 2020 and 2021 to upgrade the centre to help it meet growing need for kindergarten places in the area. There are currently 44 four-year-olds and 30 three-year-olds enrolled at the centre, while a further 34 four-year-olds are enrolled for 2020. The closure would mean the children would need to attend other kindergartens. A petition signed by 208 people was presented to the council in April, asking the council to delay the work until 2021 to allow the current three-year-old kinder group to complete its kinder education at the centre. But at a meeting on June 4, the council agreed to ask the Department of Education and Training for permission for kinder programs to be delivered over three terms next year at McLeans Road. That would mean the four-year-old kinder program would run for 20 hours a week for three terms, instead of 15 hours a week for four terms. Cr Sam Alessi said the arrangement would give the council 15 months to complete the redevelopment. “Children will still get their allocated hours of pre-school but over a shorter time,” he said. Cr Alessi said the redevelopment, which will add a second kinder room and double the centre’s capacity, was sorely needed. “The demographic is changing in that part of Bundoora and the kinder is needing to accommodate more children,” he said.

Gate padlocks cut

Whittlesea police officers are investigating a series of incidents involving offenders using fire access tracks along Coombs Road, Whittlesea, and surrounding areas by cutting padlocks on gates. Police believe the offenders are using power tools to cut the locks and then use the designated fire tracks for personal use. Police said the tracks were strictly for emergency purposes and not for public use.

A winning history A book that recounts the story of one of Thomastown’s pioneering families has been named as Australia’s best family history book. Historian Robert Wuchatsch, whose forebears were among the first settlers at Westgarthtown, was recently awarded the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies’s Alexander Henderson Award for his book Sarka to Westgarthtown: The Wuchatsch Family in Germany and Australia. It tells the history of his family from the early 1700s, including the arrival of his great-grandparents, Johann and Magdalene Wuchatsch, in Australia in the 1850s from Germany. Parts of the book are written in both German and English so Mr Wuchatsch’s relatives in

Germany are able to read about their family’s history. Mr Wuchatsch, who grew up in an 1850s bluestone farmhouse in the Westgarthtown precinct, said the nearby Lutheran cemetery sparked his interest in family history. “I saw the Wuchatsch headstones in the cemetery and wondered who were these people,” he said. Friends of Westgarthtown president John Fry said the group was appreciative of Mr Wuchatsch’s work in researching the history of the precinct. “It is fantastic to see his abilities recognised in the prestigious award,” he said. Melbourne Health has been charged by WorkSafe following the death of a patient at its Broadmeadows aged persons mental health unit in September, 2013. WorkSafe alleges that Melbourne Health contravened the Occupational Health and Safety Act on three occasions when it failed to ensure, so far as was reasonably practicable, that the 75-year-old male patient was not exposed to risks to his health or safety.

Sports clubs pitch for funding By Laura Michell Fifteen community groups and sports clubs have called on Hume council to increase spending in its 2019-20 budget to improve their facilities and fund new projects. The groups made submissions to the council’s draft budget ahead of the final budget being adopted on June 24. Three soccer clubs – Hume United, Meadow Park and Broadmeadows Stars – said their pitches and changerooms were in need of urgent upgrades.

Hume United general manager Mutlu Oztas said the club had the “worst playing pitch conditions”. He said the main pitch at the club’s Lara Douglas Reserve home ground in Dallas was “way below average” and the surface needed to be removed and re-grassed. “I believe it is in a very dangerous condition,” he said. “In the past four weeks, we’ve had eight injury cases, three of which required ambulance attendance. These injuries were mainly caused due to sprained ankles due to the … ground conditions.”

The club is also asking the council to consider adding more lights to the reserve and fencing along the creek to stop balls from landing in it. Broadmeadows Stars Sports Club also raised concerns about the condition of its pitch, saying a cricket pitch through the centre of the ground was putting players at risk. Club secretary Cemil Yildiz said the ground was not stable or level. “When we play our matches, we encourage our players to stay away from the cricket pitch area as much as possible to avoid further

injuries, as ankle injuries are becoming a regular occurrence,” he said. The club has asked the council to consider creating two new soccer pitches on an oval at the reserve. Meadow Park Soccer Club wants the council to add new changerooms to Gladstone Park Reserve to accommodate the growing number of female teams at the club. Club spokesman Don Pritchard said all five pitches were usually in use at the same time, but two teams were forced to get changed in cars or outside.

Josie’s big on fun For more than 20 years, Josie Minniti has been dedicated to raising money for The Northern Hospital. Over the years, the Epping resident has raised more than $500,000, with most of the money going to the hospital’s day oncology unit. The money is raised through annual dinner dances run by Mrs Minniti’s charity, Josie Minniti and the Fun Group. The next event will be on Saturday, June 29. “Raising money for cancer is always very important – I started because we had a lot of cancer in our family,” she said. “It is a worthy cause and you can make a difference. “The equipment [we donate] provides comfort to cancer patients while they’re undergoing their treatment … you see the look on their faces and the tranquillity.” Mrs Minniti said she was grateful for the community support of her organisation’s efforts over the past 23 years.

“If you can donate a little bit of time or organise any sort of fundraising, you are helping to make a real difference,” she said. Northern Health day oncology nurse unit manager Melissa Gwynne said that among the items Josie Minniti and the Fun Group had raised money for over the years were treatment chairs, a prostate cancer scanner and blanket warmers, as well as the refurbishment of a room in the children’s ward. “[Mrs Minniti’s] tireless fundraising efforts ensure our oncology patients receive a high standard of care and feel comfortable and less anxious during their stay,” Ms Gwynne said. The Josie Minniti and the Fun Group dinner dance will be held at Ferraro Reception and Function Centre in Campbellfield. To buy tickets, contact Mrs Minniti on 9401 4199. Laura Michell

EDUCATION AND INNOVATION

Raising respectful teens How to help kids navigate the teenage abyss with respect for themselves and others. Building resilience

Family Planning Victoria recommends parents and carers educate themselves and clarify their values and messages before talking openly and honestly with their young person. It is also important to support their right to develop healthy, respectful and consensual sexual relationships and not assume everyone is opposite-sex attracted or the gender assigned at birth. Accept that young people may have different views to yours and take a positive approach that acknowledges that sexual activity and experimentation can be a healthy part of adolescence. Everyday moments, such as watching TV news or other shows, can be good starting points from which to ask your young person what they are thinking or feeling.

Instilling strong values, helping to build resilience and providing support when needed is critical in helping children to develop self-confidence. This is equally important for girls and boys. Resilience is about being realistic, thinking rationally, looking on the bright side, finding the positives, expecting things to go well and moving forward, even when things seem bad.

Being yourself

Openly supporting diversity will help your child accept who they are, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity. Traditional gender roles have changed but society still often considers it a sign of weakness if a boy shows emotion. It is crucial that boys (and girls) learn about empathy, expression and mental health strategies. They need to know it is OK to cry, how to articulate fears and anxieties, and to seek help if they need it.

Raising girls

Some teen girls still hear messages about what they can or cannot do, or how they are to blame for bad experiences, such as sexual harassment. Teaching them that they can reject gender stereotypes and control their destiny can help boost their confidence.

Raising children

Self-respect is a great building block for resilience, says Associate Professor Julie Green, the executive director at raisingchildren.net. au.

(iStock)

Raising boys

“Teens can build self-respect by setting their standards for behaviour,” she says. “If your teen has self-respect, they believe they matter and should be treated respectfully by others.” Associate Professor Green says parents and carers are role models, so their teen should see and hear outlooks that are positive and optimistic. Good, honest communication is also crucial. Tackling difficult conversations with your child indicates a healthy relationship. “If you’re warm, accepting, non-judgmental and uncritical, and also open to negotiating and setting limits, your child is likely to feel more connected to you,” Associate Professor

Green says. If potential mental health issues arise, Associate Professor Green recommends talking to them and seeing a health professional together. This will also reassure them that they are not alone. “You could start by talking to your GP, your child’s school counsellor, teacher or other school staff. GPs and other health professionals can suggest strategies and give advice,” she says.

Sexuality

Education and communication are key in helping young people embrace their sexuality, and to respect that of others.

Promoting self-confidence

A key to respecting yourself is having confidence in yourself. As parents, we play a pivotal role in developing our children’s self-confidence. Self-confidence can be encouraged at home through the acceptance of who a child is as a person and by promoting healthy eating alongside appropriate physical and mental activity. Help is also out there if needed – Beyond Blue has a youth program and both the Alannah and Madeline Foundation and the national Office of the eSafety Commissioner work to reduce bullying. parentguides.com.au

SPORT Hume saves its best until last to make Cup’s final 32

Hume’s Michael Weier. (Shawn Smits)

Michael Weier is the man of the moment for Hume City as the National Premier League side is through to the final 32 of the FFA Cup. Hume had to get through the hard way, defeating Oakleigh Cannons 3-2 on penalties, after neither team could find the back of the net during the game and extra time. Weier stepped up when it was needed, keeping out the Cannons’ first two penalties. Hume kept its head in front despite a missed penalty from Marko Delic. When Weier made a third save, the game was over and Hume was through to the national stage of the FFA Cup. Hume coach Nick Hegarty said the club had been in penalty situations in past years in the cup, and was prepared for it. “We tried to do a couple of things,” he said. “We predetermined where everyone would be in the shoot-out to take the pressure off. “Michael then stood up with three massive saves.

“The pressure is on everyone, but the two early saves helped. We then took our chances and we were able to come away with it. “It’s something we’re really proud of.” Hegarty said he thought they had the ascendancy throughout the game and had been unlucky not to score. He said the group had done everything asked of them. “We played a good brand of footy and created some good opportunities,” he said. “Michael had an unbelievable save in the second half. We then missed three one-on-ones and had one cleared off the line. “Their keeper made some good saves. The longer it went on, the more it looked like it would be us.” Hegarty said the side’s form throughout the competition had been impressive. The past three wins had come against NPL sides. “It’s the stage we want to be at. We beat

Eagles set fast pace

Oakleigh, Heidelberg United and Bentleigh. We played three quality sides,” Hegarty said. “In past years you can sometimes get to this stage without meeting anyone in your league. “Well done to our boys.” It’s the fourth time that Hume has made it through to the national stage. Its best finish was making the final four in 2015, before being knocked out by Melbourne Victory. Hume has also secured its spot in the Dockerty Cup semi finals. It will face either Altona Magic or Moreland Zebras. Hegarty said they were keen to make it to the Dockerty Cup final for the first time. “We’ll try and put out a decent performance,” he said. “The aim is to make the final, one step further than we have been. “I don’t think the club has won anything. It’s kind of important to make a mark as a force going forward and that starts with winning.” Tara Murray

By Tara Murray Craigieburn’s focus on getting a fast start paid off, with the Eagles setting up a big win against Hillside early in their Essendon District Football League division 1 clash. After some poor starts in recent weeks the Eagles were on fire early, with 10 scoring shots in the opening quarter they had a 41-point lead at the first change. The Eagles built on that throughout the game, winning 21.7 (133)-9.14 (68) Eagles coach Lance Whitnall said they had worked to address the poor starts at training during the week. “It was a good win and we played some really good football,” he said. “Our starts had been slow and it was a focus and I was pretty happy with it.

Whittlesea’s Lawrence Shuruma celebrates a second half goal. (Shawn Smits)

NPL

Whittlesea Ranges’ strong form has continued as they added another win to their tally on Sunday in National Premier League 2 west. Ranges found themselves down a man early against St Albans Saints, but it didn’t stop them from opening the scoring just before half-time through Baggio Yousif. Scores were quickly equalised, when the Saints converted a penalty. Lawrence Shuruma scored to help the Ranges regain the lead, eventually winning 2-1.

Anyone in the top four on their day can beat each other - Lance Whitnall

’’

“Starting like that makes it hard for them as we have the game on our terms.” Whitnall said they knew that Hillside would come at them at some point, but he was happy with how the team had responded. He said it had been about being able to hold the margin and then add to it late on. “There were no standouts and it was hard to pick the best player,” Whitnall said. “Everyone played their role.” Up forward, John Bellino kicked six goals, while Brent Gordon, Jesse Davies and Samuel Laffan kicked two goals each. The win, the Eagles’ sixth of the season, has them sitting in third spot. Just four points separate the top four teams. Following weekend results, fifth-placed Hillside sits two games outside the top four. “We said to the group before the start of the game, it would put a gap on the fifth side if we won,” Whitnall said. “That’s what we want. We’re pretty happy at the moment. “The top four is settled … and anyone in the top four on their day can beat each other. “It’s really good.” The Eagles have the bye this week, meaning they play one game in three weeks. Whitnall said while not ideal the break would give more time for those on the sidelines to recover. “We’re starting to get a few back the next couple of games,” he said.

Premier Cricket

The Greenvale Kangaroos have announced a new captain for the 2019-20 season. Michael Stretton will take on the captaincy role. Stretton, who has moved to Melbourne in the off season, comes to the Kangaroos having been captain of NSW premier club Bankstown. He brings more than 10 years of premier cricket experience. A wicketkeeper-batsman, Stretton will play as a batsman for the Kangaroos, but he will work with the wicketkeepers throughout the club.

FFV

Craigieburn’s John Bellino outmarks Hillside’s Bevan Newell. (Shawn Smits)

“We’ve still got five or six out of our best side. [but] the guys taking those spots are making it hard to be pushed out.” Ryan Bongetti, Jacob McNicol and Corey Viani are among those to return soon. In other results, Tullamarine beat Roxburgh Park 21.19 (145)-8.10 (58).

Brad Allen kicked five goals for the Demons, with Adam Bartrop was named their best. For the Magpies, Luke Capuano was their best, with four goals. In premier division, Greenvale suffered its third loss of the season, losing to Strathmore 13.9 (87)-12.6 (78).

Epping City has slipped from the top of the FFV state league 2 north-west ladder. Epping had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Moreland United on Saturday. With Corio having a big win, Epping fell one spot, to be one point behind Corio. In other results, Mill Park lost to Westgate 5-1 and Hume United beat Geelong Rangers 3-2. In state league 1 north-west, Whittlesea United suffered a 3-2 loss to Banyule City. Cannons spearhead a step closer to VFLW dream

Alana Barba became a tackling machine for the Calder Cannons this year. (Shawn Smits)

Calder Cannons midfielder Alana Barba has attributed her improvement this year to an extended pre-season. Entering her third season at the Cannons, Barba decided that she needed to take her game to the next level if she was to have a chance of being drafted later this year. That meant starting pre-season early. The hard work has paid off, with 17-year-old Barba named in the initial Vic Metro under-18 squad for the national championships. The final squad will be announced next week. “I wanted to get my fitness up,” Barba said. “It was about getting a jump-start and wanting to cover the ground a bit more, and it really paid off.” The biggest area of improvement in Barba’s game was her tackling, averaging seven tackles a game. “Last year I wasn’t involved in a lot of

tackling. There were different areas that I had to improve in and that was one of them,” she said. The Mickleham resident said there had been a massive improvement overall from the Cannons this season and the competition itself. Barba, who began playing football at school level at Kolbe Catholic College several years ago, was one of the stars for the Cannons in their run to the NAB League grand final and finished third in their best and fairest award, the Meg McArthur Medal, having averaged 12.3 disposals. While Barba’s time at the Cannons has come to an end, she is still heavily focused on her football. Her first aim is to make the Metro final squad. She said the training for that had been really good. “It was a bit of a surprise being selected in the

initial squad, but it was one of my goals. “Training hasn’t been a lot about the skills itself, but setting up plays. About not panicking and keeping your composure to make better decisions, more effective decisions.” Barba is also in the Essendon VFLW squad and had her first training session with the side last week. She said it was something that she was looking forward to. “It’s a different level of footy.” Barba is hoping that she has done enough to get selected in the AFLW draft later this year. “Hopefully I’ll get into the Vic Metro squad and then focus on the VFL and see what happens. “If I don’t get selected, I’ll keep working hard.” Tara Murray

Demons show their might By Tara Murray With their season on the line, Mernda issued a statement in the second half of its match against Lalor in Northern Football League division 3. A loss would have all but ended Mernda’s finals hopes, but the Demons produced a strong second half to seal victory. With scores level at half-time, the Demons kicked 10 goals to three in the second half to come away with the 14.11 (95)-5.16 (46) win. Demons football manager Shaun Mills said the side woke up in the second half. “Lalor came out to play and saw an opportunity to take it to us,” Mills said. “Some of our boys stood up and made a statement in the second half. They started working for each other. “You have to beat the teams you’re expected to beat … we had some really good games from some of our new boys and the under-19 players.” Nicolas Aleksovski kicked four goals for the Demons, while Matthew Campbell, Tyson Sparkes and Riley Edwards kicked two goals each. Campbell started in defence, before moving forward later in the game. Mills said the move worked brilliantly, with one of Campbell’s high-flying marks doing the rounds on social media. “He came to us as a forward, but we’ve been playing him as a defender. “The second half we moved him forward and he took some great marks and goals. “We’ve got two or three under-19s in the front half and it gave them confidence too.” Mills said Ryan Kannegiesser played his best game for the club, while Brad Colliss, in his first senior game, was named among the best. James Duclos, Anthony Talbot and Bradley Dimech were the other standouts, according to Mills. The win is the Demons second in a row and third overall. They sit sixth, 10 points outside the top four. Mills said the key now was to continue that consistency for the rest of the season. “We’ve made it hard for ourselves, but have been able to blood the young guys,” he said. “Our core group is 22 and then you have a lot of under-19s. For us, it’s about retention and making sure we are getting games into the young guys. “Every week will be a test for us … It’s in our own hands.” The Demons this week face Heidelberg West for the Les Butterworth Cup. Heidelberg West holds the cup, after winning the match between the two sides earlier this season by 34 points. Lachlan Evans was named Lalor’s best. In other matches, South Morang had a good win against Heidelberg West on Saturday, 12.13 (85)-11.8 (74). Bailey Brown was named South Morang’s best. 14 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 18, 2019

Broncos put the foot down

Mernda’s Christian Cawsey takes a strong grab (Shawn Smits)

In division 1, Bundoora lost to Heidelberg, 13.9 (87)-10.11 (71). The Bulls still sit fourth. In division 2, it was a tough weekend for

Thomastown and Whittlesea. Thomastown lost to Eltham 18.8 (116)-11.6 (72), while Whittlesea lost to Banyule 15.9 (99)-7.13 (55).

Hume City Broncos were on target in a strong team win against the Werribee Devils in Big V men’s state championship. The Broncos led for most of the game in the 126-94 win. In each of the first three quarters, the Broncos exceeded 30 points to open up a big lead. Thirty-six points up, the Broncos kept the foot down in the last quarter, outscoring the Devils by six points, despite only scoring 27 points. Every Broncos player got on the court, with seven players scoring double figures. Jake Martin top scored with 24 points, while Mackuei Puondak had a double-double. The win is the Broncos sixth in a row and has them sitting nicely in the top four. The result capped off a good day for the Broncos, with their women’s side beating the Bulleen Boomers in the early game. The Broncos got off to a strong start and led by 13 points at quarter-time. Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter, before the Broncos stepped it up in the second half to win 89-54. Four Broncos players scored double figures, led by BreAnna Brock. It was Nicole Zammit though who was the star. Zammit had a triple-double, with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. The Broncos sit third on the ladder. Tara Murray
