Jab Fido and beat virus Sunbury pet owners are urged to make sure their dogs are protected against a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease. Young puppies and dogs that have never been vaccinated are susceptible to canine parvovirus, which is spread by oral or nasal contact and causes lethargy, vomiting and diarrhoea. An Australian Veterinary Association spokesman says death occurs in about 80 per cent of untreated cases. Melbourne’s north-west has been a hotspot for the disease in previous years. Sunbury vet David Brown, of All Creatures Veterinary Clinic, says the virus has not been a major problem this year but warns it is extremely resistant and can be present in parks or backyards for many months. “The best defence is making sure your dog is properly vaccinated,’’ Dr Brown says. “People who are buying puppies must ensure that they have had all the right shots.’’ Matt Crossman

Visa work takes jobs: MP By Matt Crossman Temporary working visas have opened the floodgates to cheap overseas labour, making it hard for unskilled jobseekers in regional areas such as Kyneton, according to Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters. The federal politician said the ‘‘cheap and addictive’’ working visa system was a double-edged sword undermining local workers and creating an underclass of temporary overseas employees. In a submission to a Senate inquiry, Ms

Chesters said regional food processors, including Hardwicks abattoirs at Kyneton, were increasingly using workers on temporary visas to fill shifts. ‘‘Historically, these companies have provided large-scale employment for the region and have an important role in providing casual and unskilled work for a significant number of people who have limited employment options,’’ she said. ‘‘I hear almost daily from constituents, young and old, who either had their shifts cut or have been unable to get work at all.’’

With youth unemployment in the electorate at close to 18 per cent, Ms Chesters said the widespread use of overseas workers was unacceptable. ‘‘Temporary work visa programs are significantly increasing unemployment in our region and across Australia,’’ she said. Ms Chesters said alarming reports were coming out of food processing operations in the electorate. She said people on temporary working visas were less likely to submit incident reports or protest about conditions, and she

called for a major revamp of the visa system. ‘‘I would like to see a solution that ensures all workers are given equal pay and conditions,’’ Ms Chesters said. ‘‘This would prevent the local workforce being undercut by workers who are underpaid and vulnerable to exploitation.’’ Hardwicks, which employs about 300 people across morning, afternoon and night shifts, did not respond to requests for comment. A Senate inquiry report on working visas is due late next month.

BUDGET 2015

Science trumps arts By Matt Crossman Plans for a long-awaited science wing are on the drawing board at Sunbury College after it received $3 million in last week’s state budget. Principal Stephen Smith said he was pleased that a six-year campaign for modern facilities for the college’s 1000 pupils had finally paid off. He said the new wing, which will replace a cramped 1964 building, would promote scientific inquiry and boost VCE results. ‘‘As we move on in the 21st century, our students deserve facilities that will encourage their interest in science,’’ Mr Smith said. The commitment honours a pre-election promise by Labor, but Mr Smith said Sunbury still had many educational needs.

‘‘While we’re thankful we’ve finally got something, we lament the fact there’s still no performing arts centre in town … there’s nowhere we can hold a whole-of-school assembly or performance.’’ Mr Smith said Sunbury College hoped to have the science wing project put to tender by year’s end, with construction to start in 2016. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said families were big winners of the state’s largest-ever education budget, which includes a fund to help struggling parents meet costs for school camps and excursions. Mr Bull also welcomed $50 million to help outer suburban councils, such as Hume, deal with population growth challenges, and to go towards upgrades of the Tullamarine

Funding plea for Sunbury health project

Freeway and Western Ring Road. But Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said the budget had ‘‘not much for Sunbury at all’’. Mr Finn criticised the absence of upgrades for Sunbury Road and the busy intersection of Gap Road and Horne Street. ‘‘We’ve still got a dangerous, one-lane road to the airport that’s being used by thousands of vehicles every day,’’ he said. Last week’s budget included $4.44 million for Western Water’s Sunbury recycled water plant. The $32.4 million upgrade of the plant is due to be completed by 2017-18. Augmenting the outfall sewer ($159,000) and an extension of Western Water’s award-winning recycled water network ($265,000) were also funded.

Health authorities have called on the federal and state governments to stop bickering over the funding of a preventative health initiative that has made significant inroads in Sunbury. Sunbury Community Health (SCH) chief executive Phillip Ripper and the Victorian Healthcare Association (VHA) urged the federal government to use tonight’s budget to support efforts to get people to take control of their health and prevent expensive hospital care. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Hume is one of 12 Victorian councils at risk of losing programs run by Healthy Together Victoria, which is funded by the state government. Federal funding for the National Partnership Agreement on Preventative Health was cut in the 2014 budget. The state government agreed to continue its share of the funding until June 30, but no money was allocated in last week’s budget. Mr Ripper said dozens of programs run under the Healthy Together banner, including pop-up gardens, free outdoor exercise sessions and healthy eating initiatives, were under threat. He said Healthy Together allowed SCH to deliver innovative programs that achieved results. ‘‘With ongoing support, I believe these programs can achieve long-term, generational change,’’ he said. Acting VHA chief executive Tom Symondson said strong partnerships between governments, community services and public health organisations needed help to continue. ‘‘At a time when obesity rates are rising, more people are presenting with chronic illnesses and cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death, it’s crucial that preventive health is our priority,’’ Mr Symondson said. State Health Minister Jill Hennessy said a deal between state and federal Liberal ministers was struck before last year’s Victorian election and she expected new federal funding to be announced on Tuesday night. Ms Hennessy said state-funded programs delivered before the National Partnership Agreement on Preventative Health would continue to receive funding. Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley said the national agreement was ended to eliminate duplication of services.

Macedon Ranges and Sunbury wine regions receive a $1 million tourism and jobs package, and $100,000 to install lights at Kyneton Showgrounds. Western Water funding will go to recycled water projects at Riddells Creek ($472,000) and Woodend ($450,000). The Municipal Association of Victoria welcomed the budget’s infrastructure spending but expressed fears about how regional roads would be prioritised. Statewide, $100 million will be spent on upgrading ambulances, 21 new VLocity trains will go on the V/Line network and almost $50 million will go to reducing bushfire risks on government land.

KSC acting principal James Mulraney said work on the trades hub was likely to begin in term three. He said the new building would ensure better skills training and open up more school and industry connections. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the upgrades would give Kyneton students the headstart they need. Rates rise, Sunbury split on hold By Lexi Cottee Hume council’s 2015-16 draft budget foreshadows a five per cent rate rise and record spending on infrastructure. The budget, presented to councillors on Monday night, is due to be adopted in June. Chief executive Domenic Isola said the rate increase was flagged last year in the council’s strategic resource plan. Residents will pay a 0.3 per cent landfill levy on top of the five per cent rate hike.

Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said Sunbury’s secession from Hume was not factored into this year’s budget. “It wouldn’t be fair,” Cr Atmaca said. “We have promised people in Sunbury certain services.” But, he admitted, the council was “hamstrung” in its future planning because of uncertainty about Sunbury’s break-away. The state government’s plans to cap council rates to inflation in the 2016-17 financial year also had no bearing on the draft budget, Cr Atmaca added. The proposed budget

includes a record $64 million for capital works, including $21.4 million for major leisure facilities, such as a warm-water pool at Sunbury Aquatic Centre. More than $11 million will be spent

building or upgrading parks and reserves, and a total of $9 million will go to civic buildings, including planning for a new civic centre at Sunbury. There has been $6.8 million allocated for new footpaths and drainage and new roads also attracted funds to the tune of $11 million. Millions have been earmarked to refurbish community facilities, including Sunbury’s Langama Park pavilion. Residents have until June 10 to make a submission about the council budget.

Better health at hand The opening of a $5.8 million medical centre at Gisborne is expected to save many people from travelling to Melbourne to access specialist health services. Macedon Ranges Health’s new building in Neal Street was opened by federal Health Minister Sussan Ley last Wednesday. Chief executive Don Tidbury says the centre – including a GP clinic, allied health, district nursing, home care, health promotion, specialist medical services, pathology and a pharmacy – will provide many services previously unavailable in the area. More services could be added at the centre, which is the latest incarnation of an organisation that began as the Gisborne Bush Nursing Hospital. ‘‘Over the next 12 months, management will review opportunities to establish new programs that address urgent health needs, including growing obesity rates,

mental health, access to paediatric services, our ageing community and the region’s significant population growth,’’ Mr Tidbury said. A spokeswoman said planning was continuing on a paediatric clinic, which could open later this year. The clinic would also help parents of children with conditions such as autism. Ms Ley said the medical centre would bring long-term benefits. ‘‘It will help to improve access to health services for the local community, to ensure they receive the most appropriate care closer to home,’’ Ms Ley said. Sunbury a hit with savvy buyers By Matt Crossman Low interest rates and relatively cheap housing are driving a property boom at Sunbury. Local real estate agents say houses are being snapped up in very short time, some before they have even been advertised. Latest Real Estate Institute of Victoria figures show the median house price in Sunbury rose 2.1 per cent in the March quarter to $357,500. The figure is well below the outer suburban median price of $503,500.

was changing, with a lot of buyers now coming from places such as Craigieburn and Bendigo. “They are wanting to move up [in the market] and are finding that those areas are quite expensive,” Mr Sacco said. ‘‘Being so close to the city, Sunbury is really good value.’’ Dunlop Real Estate director John Dunlop said most houses put up for sale were not staying on the market for long. ‘‘Even properties that have been on the market for a time have been selling recently. That’s a good indication of where it’s at.’’

‘‘The demand is incredible,’’ Mr Sacco said. ‘‘We’ve found buyers are becoming very savvy. “A lot of people are trying to get a private inspection before we first open a property on a Saturday.’’ Mr Sacco said the agency had recently sold six or seven houses in the Jacksons Hill estate, ranging from $500,000 to a record $850,000. Sunbury property sales have traditionally been fuelled by first-home buyers trying to break into the market, but Mr Sacco said this

A new secondary school with a specialised arts stream is due to open at the former Macedon Grammar next year. The Alice Miller School, named after a Swiss psychotherapist, will be a sibling school to Candlebark near Romsey. As reported by Star Weekly in February, author and alternative- education pioneer TOTAL John Marsden bought the 32-hectare VALUE TOTAL Bailey Road, Macedon, site VALUE from $196 Macedon Grammar School’s founder, Dr $196 Alan Rose. Macedon Grammar closed in December last year with debts totalling more than $1.2 million. An Alice Miller prospectus released last week says the new school will have between 60 and 100 students, starting with years 7-11 in 2016 and expanding to year 12 in 2017. It is expected to reach its capacity of 200 students by 2020. Classes will run from 10.30am-5pm, the ‘‘times designed to coincide more effectively with the sleep/work patterns of teenagers’’. Students will carry out all cleaning, teaching them to ‘‘accept responsibility for their own deeds’’. Mr Marsden was not available for comment but has said previously the school will follow the Candlebark philosophy, giving students a broad range of experiences, often outside the classroom. ‘‘The arts never used to be looked at as a serious career, but nowadays creativity is such a valuable asset it has to be taken more seriously,’’ \ said. he has \\

Briefs Longer-term kinder funding urged

Hume council and the Municipal Association of Victoria have welcomed the continuation of kindergarten funding, ensuring children will receive the full 15 hours a week of preschooling over the next two years. But both have warned that further commitments will be needed after the end of 2017. Last week’s federal government allocation will prevent a $1.7 million shortfall in Hume alone. Hume’s city communities director, Margarita Caddick, said councils would continue to seek a long-term pledge, “not just a year or two at a time”. She added: “Children who spend longer hours in kindergarten receive strong foundations for the future.” Full story: www. macedonranges.starweekly.com.au

Time for tea

Sunbury’s Hazel McKay, Carole Simpson and Dianne Moon (pictured) will put the kettle on for charity at a Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser this Sunday. Ms Simpson, who is organising St Andrew’s Uniting Church’s sixth annual morning tea, is urging people to support the Cancer Council by helping raise vital funds for cancer prevention, research and support. The church collected $550 last year. The morning tea will be held at St Andrew’s Uniting Church from 10.45am. To donate, visit goo.gl/NRAxvs.

NEWS

A film night organised by Woodend filmmaker Michael Dillon has raised about $3800 for the Australian Himalayan Foundation. Funds raised at the screening of Dillon’s award-winning film Everest Sea to Summit will help rebuild the mountain village of Himaganga, where at least 60 houses were destroyed in last month’s massive earthquake. A second screening will be held at Woodend’s Norma Richardson Hall this Saturday from 7pm. Cost is $15.

Forest fire threatens house

More than 25 crews helped put out a forest fire at Benloch, near Lancefield, on May 4. The slow-moving blaze, which burnt about five hectares, had threatened a house on top of a hill in Kitchenhams Road. Firefighting aircraft worked with

CFA and Department of Environment crews to control the fire, about 1.5 kilometres from Frosts Road. The fire started in heavy forest.

Clubs get their colours

Three sports clubs will be dressed for success after getting new uniforms from the state government. Sunbury MP Josh Bull last week gave out $1000 grants to Diggers Rest Football Netball Club and Sunbury Kangaroos Junior Football Club. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Tennis Club secured an $898 grant.

yneton’s Sacred Heart College has adopted a contemporary approach to enhance productive relationships between the school, student, parents and community. The college, which is celebrating 126 years of Mercy education in Kyneton, continues to provide education steeped in the rich tradition of the Mercy values of love, respect, justice, hope and service, says principal Craig Holmes. “We challenge our students to be lifelong learners who are resilient, confident, creative, compassionate and actively informed citizens of the 21st century,” Mr Holmes says. “Our students emerge from their educational journey with the confidence and resolution to pursue their individual pathways.” At Sacred Heart College, students participate in a rich curriculum from years 7 to 12, preparing them academically, socially and spiritually for life beyond secondary school. Contemporary educational programs, digital facilities and diverse co-curricular activities are designed to stimulate and challenge students, inspiring critical thinking and decision making in a collaborative environment. The college provides an environment conducive to students’ personal and spiritual development. Each student is encouraged to discover what their faith means to them and the ways in which it echoes their everyday lives. “Our aim is to motivate new generations of young people with the courage to embrace challenges,” Ms Holmes said. “Our goal is to inspire and, overall, live a vibrant life.” A comprehensive master planning process is currently under way, with stage one, the senior Sacred Heart College, 94 High Street, learning village, to be completed by the end of Kyneton. amily and community are at the heart of an Overnewton Anglican Community College education. Overnewton’s sense of community is largely manifested through its Family Contribution Scheme, in which parents are required to take part and contribute 18 hours of their time to the college each term. Parents can be found working in classrooms, supporting with administrative tasks, catering for functions or helping maintain the grounds. Principal Jim Laussen, appointed in 2001, is a passionate advocate of the benefits to students in having their parents closely connected with the college. “In every way, when students see their parents giving time to their school it fosters a wonderful partnership between the students, their family and the college,” he says.

Overnewton College has two campuses – Keilor, for preps to year 12s (excluding year 9), and Taylors Lakes for students from prep to year 9. The college structure comprises a junior school for prep to year 4, middle school for years 5 to 8, a precinct for year 9, and a senior school for years 10 to 12. Each school has its own special precinct and head teacher to ensure student needs are properly supported at each level. The year 9 centre, Canowindra, at Taylors Lakes campus, provides a learning experience designed to prepare and equip students for their final years in senior school. tudents undertaking the rigorous International Baccalaureate diploma at Kilmore International School are becoming increasingly involved in the school’s community service program. Students give at least 50 hours of community service during years 11 and 12 as part of the IB diploma’s CAS program, which encourages students to learn and grow through Creativity, Action and Service activities. CAS program co-ordinator Daniel Khoo believes community service gives students chances to become caring, principled thinkers. “Students develop a real commitment through community service,” he said. “For example, when our students volunteer at Caladenia Nursing Home or Dianella Village Hostel, they’re almost guaranteed to make a few new friends. They are old, but they are wise. “Students cannot buy this kind of experience and they can’t learn this through their IB books.” Mr Khoo said his students showed “impressive professionalism and youthful zest” when volunteering and fundraising for charities, including the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal and the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Throughout the year, they organise fundraisers for local charities, as well as others in Australia and overseas. Some students brighten local airwaves as radio presenters on community station OKR FM, which broadcasts at Kilmore and Wallan.

ed Rock Christian College celebrates 10 years at Sunbury this year and what better way to launch into the next decade than with the introduction of secondary education. The college is already known for its dedicated staff, intent on knowing and meeting the needs of students through engaging, meaningful learning programs and a strong integrated approach to student wellbeing. It is also renowned for its affirming and confident student culture, in which students build each other up, value the success of others and enjoy the diverse input of their peers. Principal Karen McCoy believes this learning environment enables students to achieve their best – academically, musically and personally. “The college will build on the solid foundation it has as a primary school to proactively engage, inspire and challenge its secondary students,” Ms McCoy says. Red Rock Christian College caters for diversity in student learning and will continue to do so into the secondary years through its acceleration program and by giving support to those who need it. The college psychologist works closely with teachers to build strategies that enable all students to achieve their very best. Ms McCoy says Red Rock Christian College’s size is not to be underestimated. “The saying ‘Great things come in small packages’ is absolutely true,” she says. “At Red Rock, small equals intimacy, targeted teaching, supported risk-taking, opportunity to have a voice and to be the one involved.” Enrolments are now open for year 7 students.

hile VCE suits many 17 and 18 year-old students, it’s not for everyone. The alternative option for further education – the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) – is popular with students looking for a more hands-on approach. “Students who study VCAL have the benefits of a senior secondary certificate that gives them practical work-related experience,” Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority communications manager Justin Shortal says. “At the same time, they develop their literacy, numeracy and personal skills. VCAL is also very flexible, so students can select a program that suits their interests and learning needs.” VCAL can be completed by years 11 or 12 students and has three levels – foundation, intermediate and senior – with teachers and careers counsellors helping the students work out which one is appropriate for their needs. The program has four compulsory strands: literacy and numeracy, industry-specific skills, work-related skills, and personal development skills. Students can choose from study areas including automotive, engineering, building and construction, hospitality, retail, multimedia, information technology, agriculture, horticulture, warehousing, hairdressing and beauty. “VCAL is a great way for young people to remain engaged in education,” Mr Shortal said, adding that it was ideal for students looking to complete an apprenticeship or traineeship or to work straight out of school. VCAL graduates can also choose to go on with VCE studies for university entrance. Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority: 1800 134 197 or www.vcaa.vic.edu.au Rebecca Miller

In a court close to all services, this meticulously presented house is on about 0.79 hectares with a sectioned-off pony paddock and oodles of space for the kids to kick around a footy. The seven-star energy-rated house has four large bedrooms (each with ceiling fan) and a study. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe behind an island wall, and an en suite. There’s a main bathroom and a separate European-style laundry. Flanked by a lounge room and family-meals area (floating floorboards throughout), the grey-and-white kitchen has an island bench, stainless-steel dishwasher and 900mm cooker. A full-width covered pergola at the back has views of landscaped gardens and a big stretch of lawn. Double-glazing throughout, three split-systems, three-phase power, a separate carport to shelter a boat or caravan, and a double garage with internal access are other features.

Amid other quality dwellings, this modern gem is tailor-made for a family for several reasons: four big bedrooms, three living zones and the use of easy-upkeep floating floorboards in high-traffic areas. The main bedroom has a contemporary box bay window with seat, a walk-in wardrobe and stylish en suite. Separate lounge and rumpus/theatre rooms (both carpeted) are a boon for family downtime, while the large family-meals space is open to the kitchen. A combination of latte top and white lower cupboards, a splashback in silvery metallic tiles, white Caesarstone benchtops (including an island), dishwasher and 900mm cooker equip the cooks’ domain. An integrated timber deck extends out to provide both sheltered and sunny spots; it looks out to a yard big enough to accommodate a pool or large shed. On about 1065 square metres, the house also has a remote-controlled double garage with internal access.

Real Estate Today SELLING IN WINTER Just because the weather turns nasty doesn’t mean you can’t sell your house. In fact, it can be a distinct advantage to sell during the winter months, because there’s less competition. The advantage vendors have over buyers is that when buyers need a home, they need one regardless of the weather. So there will always be buyers in the market. On the other hand, vendors can increase the ratio of buyers looking at their property by selling in the winter, since there are fewer alternative homes on offer. One national real estate chain found that while September was the biggest month for sales over the past 10 years the local market has been May-June. Now if the sales volume doesn’t vary that much, then this means that sellers in the winter months will have a greater chance of completing a sales transaction. Not only are the chances better of selling, but also the prices achieved can actually be higher in winter along with a faster

sale. Another possible plus is that some houses actually show better during winter because of their northerly aspect, sheltered positioning or cost-effective heating. One important tip, however, is to be extra careful

On the tightly held northern slope of Mount Macedon, with spectacular views over Hesket Valley, “Estherdean” sits among the most stunning properties of the region, some featuring award-winning architecture. This property is no exception, with plans for a grand new residence already available. The existing residence, a three-bedroom brick-veneer cottage, could serve as temporary accommodation while building a dream home (subject to council approval), or for use as a weekender. Lots of exposed brick, slate and timber feature in the house which has lounge (fireplace) and dining rooms wrapping around the kitchen. Ample cupboards in timber, dishwasher and an electric cooker are salient kitchen features. The property of about 6.37 hectares has beautiful mature gardens, good shedding, quality red volcanic soils and mountain spring-fed water supply to a large dam.

WOODEND 180 Slatey Creek Road, 3442 Joan Gladman: 5427 4307

Price: $799,000

Homey, warm, slightly bohemian: this mudbrick abode exudes these priceless qualities in spades. Tree changers and families wanting a rustic lifestyle will love it, not just for its elemental building materials but also for the leafy location within cooee of Woodend village. It’s the deep-set, diamond leadlight windows in many rooms that define the character of 32-square “Te Aroha” (meaning Place of Love), but equally appealing are the double-height ceilings allowing for a mezzanine level, the exposed joists and lots of pine on walls and ceilings – a classic look for mudbrick builds of its era.

Private sale

On the right of the entry hallway, where crazy-paved slate is underfoot, a carpeted family room with a wood heater is next to the kitchen-meals zone. Bespoke white-painted timber cupboards, a Bosch dishwasher, electric cooker, a slow-combustion cooker with “Columbian” label, and a colourful leadlight window behind the sink are in the kitchen fit-out. A soaring bluestone chimney with fireplace is the centrepiece of a big living room, three steps down from the family room. In here, the dining zone has a chandelier suspended under a normal-height ceiling and french doors to the side garden. Add in the tryptich of

leadlight feature windows and this space has atmosphere to spare. Two bedrooms with wardrobes are downstairs, along with a laundry with lots of storage, an updated bathroom with a spa and bespoke timber vanity unit, and a separate toilet preceded by a black vinyl-wrap vanity unit. The upstairs main bedroom is an example of how stylish the wall and ceiling boards become when painted white, with exposed joists left in natural timber. Four in-roof wardrobes and updated en suite (separate toilet) are included. Also up here is a huge mezzanine living room with carpet, in-roof storage, bookshelves and dormer

and leadlight porthole windows. There’s also a small room with a wall of mirrored wardrobes – a perfect nursery or study. Surrounding gardens on the 1.62-hectare block are well landscaped (think sleepers and drystone walls defining garden beds), including the big level backyard with steps down to a dam and natural bushland. Font and back verandahs are the spots to soak up changing seasonal views. A mudbrick, freestanding garage has back stairs to a loft. Gas ducted heating and big water tanks are final notes in a well-played melody. Carole Levy 17 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 12, 2015

any of us undertake. Being a Mum is 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Being a Mum is an unpaid labour of love and offers of no holiday pay, no sick leave, no superannuation and no retirement, yet being a Mum is the best thing we will ever do! As a Mum and now a Grandmother I see every day as ‘Mother’s Day’ and I am so grateful every day that I was blessed with children. Certainly being a Mum is challenging, there is no training and as a new Mum we suddenly face sleep deprivation and the full responsibility for a tiny human being who is totally dependent upon us. Sometimes I hear young mothers say “I am just a Mum, I don’t work.” Oh yes you do work and at the most important job- raising a child! To those of you who are Mums, I salute you and wish you happiness. To those of you who have lost your Mum, my thoughts are with you as I know you will miss your Mum as much as I miss mine. SPORT Young Jets leave years of struggle behind them The success of Sunbury Jets’ youth women’s side in Big V division 2 this season is inspiring the town’s next group of young female basketballers. The Jets have struggled in recent seasons, with many of the girls who have been in the program for the past five years not being on the winning side very often. That has changed this season, with the side sitting 9-1 after losing for the first time at the weekend to a buzzer-beater from over halfway. Coach Andrew Seidel said he would have taken a start like that before the season began. “I was assistant coach last season and when the opportunity arose I threw my hat

in the ring,” Seidel said before the weekend’s matches. “Morale was down as we hadn’t won very often. “As I was appointed late in the piece, we weren’t able to recruit heavily.” Half of last year’s team returned for this year, with a few players who had time off returning. Four of the players, Tamara Knox, Terri McIntosh, Tayla Allen and Naomi Stevens, gained plenty of experience last season playing several games with the women’s senior team. Knox and Stevens are playing for both sides again. “To a degree [playing women’s] has helped them. They have been in the program for

‘‘

Morale was down as we hadn’t won very often five years,” Seidel said. “They help form the nucleus of the side and we are one of the more experienced sides in the competition. “We’ve been training with the senior women and played games against them in training, which adds to the experience.” The Jets were in division 1 last season but with the introduction of a division 2 they found themselves demoted. “I tell the girls not to think about whether we’re in division 1 or division 2,” Seidel said.

Bombers hold the line By Tara Murray It’s been an interrupted start to the season for Riddell’s A-grade netballers because of players’ absence, but you wouldn’t have picked it from results in the Riddell District Netball League. The Bombers won the first four matches, including against premiers Melton Centrals and fellow finalist Diggers Rest. Bombers’ coach Lauren Close concedes 4-0 isn’t a bad start to the season. “We’ve had a bit of change and haven’t had the same team on court each week,” Close said. “The VNL [Victorian Netball League] girls have been missing games due to their commitments, but some of the B-grade girls have stepped up and played out of their skins. “Emma Croft and Vanessa Kennedy were nervous when I told them they would be playing A-grade, but they’ve handled it well,” Close said. After finishing runners-up last season, the Bombers added more experience to this year’s squad. Shooting star Mikayla Vaughan steps into the goalshooter’s role, while former Romsey premiership coach Danni Davidson has also joined the side. “They definitely add more experience, but it also brings strength to the league,” Close said. “Danni wanted a change and we weren’t going to say no. “Her greatest asset is that we’re able to play her where we need her. “So far, she’s been in defence for us, but we can put her in the midcourt if we need her there.” Another VNL star, Ellie Bennetts, was also going to join the team but accepted a coaching role elsewhere. On Saturday, the Bombers defeated Wallan 49-25. The match got off to a slow start with a couple of injury time-outs. “A couple of people fell over and one girl from Wallan hurt her knee,” Close said. “Mikayla was unwell and, after about three minutes, she came off. “It was very windy and we had to move our goalkeeper to goalshooter. “We had no bench in the end.” Close, now training with her VNL side, is still on track for a return later in the season. Elsewhere, Macedon remains undefeated after beating Lancefield and Melton Centrals were too good for Sunbury. Rupertswood thrashed Woodend Hesket, while Romsey overcame an undermanned Diggers Rest. Riddell’s Bridget Aughton and Danni Davidson face off against Wallan’s Kate Bishop.

- Andrew Seidel

“We could probably do damage in division 1. We were stiff last year; it wasn’t like we were being thrashed. “We wanted to be competitive but [our good start] is a shock.” Seidel has been named the division’s coach of the month in both the opening months of the season. The Jets lost their first match of the season 56-53 to Camberwell on Saturday night. Scores were level when a half-court shot from Camberwell clinched the win on the siren. The Jets bounced back with a 84-57 win over Mornington in their next match. Tara Murray

Cannons blow up as Falcons take flight Calder Cannons’ inability to stop a run-on has again been the downfall of the TAC Cup side, this time against Geelong Falcons. The Cannons had the best of the game in the first 15 minutes but did not take advantage before the Falcons kicked into gear. The Falcons lead by 30 points at quarter-time and were never headed in winning 13.12 (90) - 4.12 (36) Cannons coach Andrew Johnston said that once an opponent started a roll his side struggled to stop it. “We lost momentum and they gained a lot of confidence and ran over the top,” he said. “We need to play one-on-one football. Too many guys are not doing it. “We need to work harder on the spread. I don’t think it’s a fitness thing. It’s a willingness to do it for longer.” Ovie Magbegor, in his first competitive game in more than six months, was a real positive for the Cannons. “Hisham Kerbatieh was a real focal point down forward and he’s getting better with his defence, while Tyson Lever was really good,” Johnston said. “Not too many other positives.” It was an emotional week for the Cannons, with the death of legendary trainer Phil Dunk. He died suddenly on May 2 after spending the day at the Cannon’s game. Talent manager Ian Kyte said everyone at the Cannons and many people across the TAC Cup loved Dunk. He was a trainer at the Western Jets before joining the Cannons when they were formed. “He has been a stalwart of the club and has been here right from the start,” Kyte said. “Even when he moved to Ballarat he still came down. “He had a cult following and nobody would walk past him without acknowledging him and saying something.” Dunk was one of the inaugural inductees into the Cannons Hall of Fame earlier this year. “We’re grateful we were able to honour him while he was alive,” Kyte said. United shuns relegation By Tara Murray Sunbury United bounced back from a 3-0 loss the previous week to record a 2-all draw with Corio on Saturday. It’s been a tough start, with big losses to United in FFV state league 1 north-west. Jake McIntyre and Simon Yates were goal scorers for United in Saturday’s draw. The single point means United is out of the relegation zone, sitting 10th with one win, two draws and four losses. This week gives United the perfect opportunity to add to its points tally as it takes on bottom side Westgate. In state league 5 west, Kyneton District scored a 4-1 win against Melbourne Lions. It’s the second successive win for the Rangers, now fourth on the ladder. Ryan Cole scored the only goal of the first half before two goals to Daniel Reeves and one to Jake Sartori sealed a comfortable win. It was a good day for Sartori, who also scored two goals in the reserves’ 3-1 win over Melbourne Lions. In other state league 5 games, Gisborne lost to Lara 4-1. Lara dominated and led 2-0 at half-time. It was 3-0 when Lara converted a penalty that saw Sean Geer sent from the field, leaving Gisborne with 10 players. Both teams scored goals in the final minutes of play. Gisborne now sits seventh on the ladder.

40 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 12, 2015

Rugby league

The Sunbury Tigers were too strong for the Doveton Steelers in Victorian Rugby League first-grade, winning 42-22. After losing their opening two games, the Tigers have won two in a row and are fourth on the ladder. This week, they face the Altona Roosters.

EDFL

East Sunbury was brought back to reality in Essendon District Football League division 2 on Saturday against Hadfield. Coming off a rare win, the Thunder players were slow starters against undefeated Hadfield and were made to pay. The Thunder was kept goalless in the first half and once it got on the scoreboard, it was too late, with the final scoreline being 17.16 (118)-5.6 (36). James Edwards kicked two goals for the Thunder, while Kamen Ogilvie continued his good start to the season as the Thunder’s best.

Golf

Bob McLennan won the Romsey Golf club’s stroke competition in cold conditions on Saturday. A gusting westerly/north-westerly wind saw many shots fall well short or go further than intended. A number of players seemed to be on track for good scores but almost all had one or two horrible holes. In the club’s Royal Women’s Hospital’s 4BBB competition on Wednesday, Lorraine Robb and Pam Drummond won on a count-back from Elaine Scanlon and Wendy Gosden. Robb and Drummond will represent the club in the Dalhousie district final of the RWH 4BBB competition.

Injury-riddled list has Tigers licking their wounds Playing the top side is hard enough on a normal day; playing with several key men out with injury makes it near impossible. It happened to Kyneton against Strathfieldsaye on Saturday in the Bendigo Football League. The Tigers were gallant and tried hard but couldn’t match last year’s premiers, losing 20.18 (138) - 9.4 (58). Director of football Rick Egan said injuries had left the side well below full strength. “With the team we put on the park, it was a good effort,” Egan said “It was always going to be tough with about nine out from our seniors’

list. There are some long-term injuries and some shorter-term ones.” The biggest worry is star player Ben Weightman. “He has a bulging disc and it’s likely he’ll miss four to six weeks,” Egan said. “You can’t cover quality players like that.” But he believed the scoreboard didn’t reflect the match. “The guys had a real go and, besides the first quarter, the actual scoreboard wasn’t an indication of their effort. [Strathfieldsaye] are a far better side and part of the top three, who are a class above the rest of us.”

Alik Magin was the standout for the Tigers in a performance that included two goals. “There were others who contributed and a lot of the young guys stood out,” Egan said. The Tigers are seventh with two wins ahead of a vital clash with Castlemaine this weekend. “The Castlemaine game is one we do really want to win,” Egan said. “It will be a tight finish for fifth on the ladder and they’re one of the sides we’re fighting against … we are hoping to get one or two players back.”

Redbacks still biting By Tara Murray Romsey gave a little reminder that it will again be a team to watch in the Riddell District Football League, smashing Diggers Rest in last weekend’s grand final rematch. It was a game reminiscent of many of last season’s for the Redbacks, who went through undefeated. The Burras were put under all sorts of pressure as the Redbacks’ defence and midfield strangled their scoring opportunities. At the other end, the Redbacks’ class and cleanness gave the forwards copious opportunities, with numerous uncontested marks in the forward 50. While the scoreboard showed a 15.12 (102) - 12.7 (79) result, wasteful kicking in the final quarter from the Redbacks and late goals flattered the Burras. Redbacks coach Dean Helmers didn’t know what to expect going into the game. “We weren’t sure how we’d go this year with a completely different list,” he said. “I still expect we’ll hit our straps in round eight or nine but, to the boys’ credit, they’re firing even quicker. “I was really pleased with the pressure in the midfield and we put them under a lot of pressure. “They couldn’t get clean disposal on the outside and it’s something we are working really hard on. “I look at the scoreboard and I don’t think it printed the picture of the dominance of the game; we were in a different class, to be honest.” Cam Dawson, Phil Lobb and captain Steve Burlak all missed the win. Burlak and Lobb should return this week. Burras coach Shaun Sims said it was a very ordinary performance by his side. “When the game was on the line, Romsey played better,” he said. “We started well but made a lot of errors in the first quarter, which really hurt us. Every big moment we weren’t up to it.” Despite finishing the game with no one on the bench, Sims said that wasn’t an excuse. Leg injuries to Craig Harvey and Brent Tuckey will likely have them on the sidelines for several weeks. Lenny Clarke, who didn’t play on Saturday, won’t return until the season’s second half. The Burras are 2-2 after playing the other four teams that finished in the top five last season. “You judge yourself against how you perform against the top six sides,” Sims said. “I would have been happy with 3-1. “I thought we missed a golden opportunity against Sunbury, who were injury-riddled. ‘We played similar today, when we allowed them to play better football.” For more pictures from the weekend’s clash go to www.sunbury.starweekly.com.au.

Gisborne sits eighth on the ladder with one win. On Saturday, the Bulldogs lost to Eaglehawk 19.17 (131) - 9.4 (58). The Bulldogs trailed at every break. Jarrad Lynch, Casey Summerfield and Matthew Knox kicked two goals each, while Heath Simpson was best for the Bulldogs. In netball, both the Tigers and Bulldogs had mixed results in their A-grade matches. The Tigers lost to Strathfieldsaye 42-30, while the Bulldogs thrashed Eaglehawk 63-23. Tara Murray

Ruthless Lions roar to four out of four Sunbury Lions are flying in the Victorian Women’s Football League. They have won their four west division matches by a total of 349 points and have kept the opposition scoreless on three occasions. Coach Kerry Saunders said the girls were adjusting to playing at a lower level. “It’s an adjustment type of season while we try to find more girls to play,” Saunders said. “We have 15 regular girls and, come finals, we’ll have 18 or 19, barring injury. “It’s just enough to get us through, but we’d like more players. “Some of the other teams are just starting and learning the game and struggling for players, too. “Melton Centrals have 17 or 18 players and I expected the match against them to be a bit closer [the Lions won 51-9].” For Saunders, who coached a premiership with Wyndhamvale last season, the move to the Lions has been a good one. “We still have the basic core of players we’ve had for the past few seasons,” she said. “It has been handy for me as everybody already knows each other; at Wyndhamvale, it was a brand new team. It’s been really good here and everyone has been welcoming.” Saunders said she would look at switching player positions to give her group more of a challenge in the coming weeks. On Sunday, the Lions defeated Jacana 9.17 (71) - 0.0 (0). Emel Ramadan and Lisa Kirby kicked two goals each, while Natasha Hardy was best on ground. Meanwhile, the Lions men’s side had a strong win over Melton South in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday night. Poor kicking meant the Lions trailed by 12 points at quarter-time. But then the Lions kicked 15 goals to two after the break to win 17.19 (121) 7.8 (50). Josh Burgess kicked six goals for a second successive week, while Matt Medcraft and Jack Sheahan had three each. Tom Donoghue was best on ground, with Burgess and Medcraft among the other standouts. The Lions sit seventh on the ladder ahead of a clash with Melton this week. In A-grade netball, the Lions bounced back from two straight losses to beat Melton South 68-24. Chloe Curran scored 40 goals for the Lions in a best-on-court performance.
