A chance to chill Coming soon after an unseasonal bushfire that devastated the community, Sunday’s Lancefield Agricultural Show was a chance for people to take some much deserved time out. And, thanks to a $20,000 state government grant, everyone was invited, with the gates at Lancefield Park thrown open and close to 3000 people streaming in. Traditional horse, livestock, poultry and wood chopping events were again on the card, along with sideshows, art and craft displays and rides. But for many young people, the launch of the town’s first megafauna festival was a highlight. Would-be archaeologists had the chance to unearth bones in a sandpit “jigsaw dig”. There was also a Museum Victoria display of fossils found during excavations at the former swamp site. The festival, including film screenings, art exhibitions and performances, continues this week. Trust fire inquiry: minister Residents affected by the planned burn-off near Lancefield that broke containment lines, destroying four houses, 25 sheds, vehicles and thousands of kilometres of fencing, have been urged to trust the investigation process. Hundreds of copies of a survey are being distributed locally as Lancefield Neighbourhood House co-ordinator Vivienne Philpotts, who will represent the community as part of the independent probe, seeks to gather as much feedback as possible. Ms Philpotts rejected suggestions she would be told what to think or that community participation would be limited in any way. ‘‘The only people I’m answerable to are my committee of management volunteers,’’ Ms
Philpotts said, adding that the survey would be available ‘‘in every space we can think of’’. ‘‘Making sure people get the chance to say what they think is the most important thing.’’ The Cobaw Ranges’ fire, which began as a burn organised by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on September 30, ravaged more than 3000 hectares before being controlled early last week. As reported by Star Weekly online, Environment Minister Lisa Neville last week admitted that planning for prescribed burns had to be improved. Fronting a community meeting in Lancefield six days after the burn broke containment lines for a second time, Ms Neville said the inquiry would lead to real changes. ‘‘We need to get better,’’ she said. ‘

‘There’s a long way to go. I’m not saying we have a perfect system. We don’t, and this is an example.’’ Responding to concerns about planned burning, forest thinning and firewood removal, Ms Neville said a soon-to-be-released report from a separate investigation would help refine and improve planned burn practices. She rejected suggestions the Lancefield inquiry would whitewash the issue and said community input would be critical to improvements being made. Ms Neville said planned burns would remain part of the government’s bushfire risk management. ‘‘We’ve got to be more sophisticated about it. We have to learn.’’ One resident, whose house was among those razed, called for the release of vegetation
assessments, risk assessments and details of what resources were allocated and the response once the fire escaped. Others complained of communications problems, with mobile and internet blackspots in the Benloch area leading to gaps in the flow of information. Vowing to work with Macedon Ranges council and the federal government, which recently knocked back requests for blackspot funding at Lancefield, Ms Neville said it was clear ‘‘that we need to have Telstra in the room’’. Support for people affected by the fire, including counselling, streamlined planning services and help with trees or water tanks, is available through the council. Emergency relief is also available via the federal government. More details: www.disasterassist.gov.au

Disability red tape a sore point By Matt Crossman Hume council is urging the state and federal governments to investigate shortfalls in services for people who suffer a major disability through accident or stroke, amid reports people are waiting up to 18 months to be reimbursed for essential purchases or modifications. Other people have been left out of pocket after going ahead with house upgrades and car modifications before receiving departmental approval. A motion from Sunbury-based councillor Jack Medcraft was unanimously supported
last week. Speaking in the lead-up to Saturday night’s charity ball to raise funds for Cr Jack Ogilvie, who had a severe stroke earlier this year, Cr Medcraft said bureaucrats were ‘‘tying people’s hands behind their backs’’. He said mountains of red tape around expenses, such as electric wheelchairs and house alterations, were forcing many people to stay in the hospital system. ‘‘These people need every bit of help they can get,’’ Cr Medcraft said. ‘‘Often, if you pay for it and get it done you lose the ability to have the government pay because they say you’ve already taken it on and
‘‘
It takes too long for people to move on in their - Jack Medcraft rehabilitation
’’
haven’t got it approved. There shouldn’t be any sort of road blocks. “We should be helping them move on in their rehabilitation,” Cr Medcraft said. ‘‘It takes too long for people to get help.’’ A federal Health Department spokesman said state government services and support would continue to be provided until the rollout
of the National Disability Insurance Scheme in Hume from March 2018. A spokeswoman for state Health Minister Jill Hennessy did not respond by Star Weekly’s deadline. Therapists said many people don’t know where or how to get the support they need. One disability advocate said many people in the sector likened the NDIS rollout to ‘‘building a plane while it’s in the air’’. ‘‘There’s just a lot of unknowns. Hopefully, the full rollout will allow people to buy what they need rather than making them fit a particular program.’’
Sunbury loses an ‘angel’
(Shawn Smits)

Tributes continue to flow for Sunbury Rotary Club president Saby Sebastian (right) described by his loved ones as “an angel who offered selfless service to the community”. Mr Sebastian died last Wednesday when the vehicle he was in and a school bus carrying three children collided in Diggers Rest. Mr Sebastian was a member of the Sunbury Rotary Club for the past 15 years and first served as president in 2007-08. A Facebook page in honour of Mr Sebastian had to be shut down because of the sheer volume of tributes, messages of love and condolences to the family. Club secretary Mani Seneviratne said Mr Sebastian’s death was a “huge loss”. “Saby was an angel,” he said. “If you did something wrong by him, he would still hug you and love you anyway. That was the kind of person he was.” Sunbury MP Josh Bull posted on social media that he was “very saddened” by the news. “Saby was an outstanding community person who will be missed by many,” he wrote. The community is invited to join Rotary club members for a function to honour Mr Sebastian’s contributions to the community. It will be held at The Nook Café and Wine Bar, 111 Evans Street, Sunbury, from 6.30pm on Tuesday October 20. Entry is $10.
Colour them health-conscious The athletic gear of hundreds of runners took on rainbow hues as part of a Gisborne charity event to help local health services. Close to 700 people were splashed with bright powder as part of the Gisborne Colour Run and Walk around Gardiner Reserve on Sunday. They raised about $20,000 for Macedon Ranges Health. Entries for this year’s event were up on last year, with adults and children running or walking five kilometres or 2.5 kilometres in support of services and programs offered at the Neal Street health centre. A team of Woodend cyclists raising money for the fight against cancer is close to smashing through the $150,000 barrier. Spokes of Hope’s 14 members have spent the coldest winter in 25 years pushing up some of the Macedon Ranges’ steepest hills, collecting more than $50,000 ahead of the team’s third Ride to Conquer Cancer. The 200-kilometre charity ride from Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula this weekend benefits the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. While a lot of hard work has gone into training and fundraising, cyclists say it’s nothing compared to the hard road travelled by friends, family and colleagues affected by cancer. ‘‘Last year, we lost our team manager just
weeks before the ride,’’ team member Allan Spencer-Stewart says. ‘‘This year, one of our team has a partner riding the chemo roller coaster. Another of our team is a survivor. It’s real, it’s confronting.’’ The team, one of the top fundraisers in the state, is third on the overall tally, having raised $51,808 this year and almost $150,000 since 2012. A large part of this year’s total was collected during a ‘Sweet Winter Night’ in July. Team captain Jon Morgan says the thought of friends affected by the disease keeps him going. ‘‘I’m also hoping to make a difference to the lives of their partners and kids, and to give other people a chance to contribute.’’ Details: goo.gl/B8oqBt Matt Crossman

Hot, dry and worrying … By Matt Crossman
Bob Nixon shows new-season shoots on the grapevines at Gisborne Peak. (Kristian Scott)
‘‘I don’t think we’ve ever picked in March.’’ She said ongoing changes to the region’s climate could lead to some wineries changing grapes. ‘‘We’re a cold climate. This kind of climate change is affecting what kind of varietals you
can have. If it keeps up, we may have to look at varieties that before we never could.’’ A total of 395.2 millimetres of rain has been recorded at Kyneton so far this year. That’s well below the long-term rainfall average of 753 millimetres a year.
New link to Sunbury jobs Community leaders have welcomed plans for a new group offering training and job services for Sunbury’s indigenous population. Indigenous Prospects Training and Recruitment director John Secombe said the service would establish crucial links between employers and jobseekers, many of the latter having disadvantaged backgrounds. The service, about a month away from its full launch, will also offer cultural diversity training to empower Aboriginal employees. Mr Secombe said the new service would steer clear of “training for training’s sake”, linking jobseekers with roles and courses that have real outcomes. “We want to create great job opportunities for indigenous people in great employment sectors,” Mr Secombe said. ‘‘We also want to increase the town’s capacity to create those jobs. ‘‘Community services, hospitality … the opportunities are there.’’ Mr Secombe, who has lived in Sunbury for about 10 years, said the service was funded by government, corporate and philanthropic groups. Sunbury has about 500 residents with indigenous heritage. Hume councillor Jack Medcraft, who is involved in efforts to secure office space for the service, said it would complement indigenous programs run through Sunbury Community Health and local schools. Unseasonal heat, winds and below-average rainfall are having a dire effect on central Victorian crops. The hottest start to October in 75 years, hard on the heels of a dry winter, is also affecting Macedon Ranges wineries, who say long-term climate change could lead them to trialling new grape varieties. The Victorian Farmers Federation last week urged farmers to support each other during what is shaping up as a long, difficult summer. Federation president Peter Tuohey urged farmers to ensure they make the right decisions about livestock numbers, finances and personal wellbeing. Julia Hausler, field officer for grain producer organisation GrainGrowers, said some crops had already failed, while others would be cut for hay and some still had potential. ‘‘The decision for many growers now is whether to graze, make hay or attempt to harvest,’’ Ms Hausler said. With the latest Bureau of Meteorology seasonal outlook showing little or no rainfall over the next few months, Gisborne Peak Winery owner Barbara Nixon said she was grateful for access to Western Water’s recycled water scheme. ‘‘We’re delighted,’’ she said. ‘‘The scheme was put in during all the rainy years, but everybody knew it was going to be dry again. ‘‘Springtime is when the grapes need water. If you didn’t have water in reserve, you’ll be in trouble in a long summer.’’ Ms Nixon said the early heat would likely bring the season forward. ‘‘Instead of vintage being in April it would be in March,’’ she said.

Finn fires up over Sunbury’s lot By Matt Crossman Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn has called on the state government to stop its ‘‘war’’ on Sunbury. Speaking in Parliament, the Bulla resident accused ministers of going to ‘‘extraordinary lengths’’ to stop the town’s separation from Hume and slammed what he called a lack of action on a dangerous intersection at Horne Street and Gap Road and congestion on Sunbury Road. He also criticised moves aimed at preventing Sunbury commuters catching V/Line trains.
‘‘This government is kicking Sunbury from pillar to post, and it must stop,’’ Mr Finn said. ‘‘I ask the Premier to direct his ministers to stop the war on Sunbury.’’ The government returned fire, claiming the only battle was Mr Finn’s war against common sense. A spokeswoman for Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said the government was still considering the transition auditors’ report, which recommended the Sunbury split be abandoned. ‘‘The report said that a new Sunbury council would incur massive rate rises and
cuts to services,’’ the spokeswoman said. ‘‘Only Bernie Finn and the Liberal Party could ignore such serious findings.’’ A spokesman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan denied there had been indecision about the intersection, pointing to a $15,000 planning study that began in June. ‘‘Data will be used in consultation with residents and businesses, as well as Hume council, to determine the best solution … which may include traffic lights,’’ he said. The spokesman said VicRoads was considering safety measures to improve Sunbury Road, including widening the eastern side.
Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said changes to V/Line services made Sunbury consistent with other city-fringe stations and had eased overcrowding on country trains. “Since that change, 10 extra peak-hour services have been added to Sunbury and more off-peak services are being investigated,” she said. Sunbury MP Josh Bull has urged residents to have their say on public transport at a forum at the Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre from 6pm on Wednesday, October 28. 150 years of ‘best days’ People can tour the old school site on Main Street and the current site in Station Street, taking in displays of photos, memorabilia, art, food, a market, barbecue and Devonshire teas – before an official ceremony at 2.30pm. For more details, phone 5429 5099 or email romsey.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au. Other community events coinciding with the anniversary include a movie night at the Mechanics Institute from 7.30pm on Saturday and a community picnic at the former school site from 11am-3pm on Sunday. Choc-tops and Fantales will be available as part of the screening of the 1982 Australian film Dusty Dusty, which was filmed in and around Romsey. Tickets: $4 adult; $10 family. Matt Crossman

Pupils will dress in period costume as part of Romsey Primary School’s 150th anniversary celebrations this week. Hundreds of past students are also expected to return for events including an open day, art show, family bush dance, tree planting and a time capsule ceremony. Event spokeswoman Robyn Moore says two books, one of pupils’ art and a history written by a former principal, will be released on Thursday. Children and staff members will dress up especially for an old-time school day on Friday. ‘‘We’ll also be doing old-time classroom activities so the kids will get a real taste of how school was in the 1860s and ’70s,’’ Ms Moore says. Celebrations will culminate with an open day from 10am-4pm on Saturday.

Residents love life on the edge By Matt Crossman People living on the edges of Melbourne are much less likely to move than those close to the city, Australian Bureau of Statistics data has revealed. Latest migration figures show Hume, at 5.5 per cent, had the state’s second-lowest departure rate in 2013-14. The rate in the Macedon Ranges was 5.9 per cent (fifth overall). Whittlesea had the lowest percentage of people leaving in 2013-14, with a departure rate of 4.8 per cent.
‘‘
I found it hard … but once I got involved in the community it really became - Polly Woodward home
’’
Polly Woodward, who moved to Sunbury about eight years ago, said that, like many people, affordability had drawn her to the area. But she said a strong sense of community meant she would stay.
‘‘I found it hard when I first moved here, but once I got involved in the community it really became home,’’ Ms Woodward said. ‘‘There’s so much to do and get involved in. I can’t ever see myself leaving now.’’ She said the need for better public transport, to ease people’s reliance on cars, was among the area’s most pressing needs. ‘‘Fortunately, I don’t often have to catch the train, but when I do it’s usually packed,’’ Ms Woodward said. Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said he wasn’t surprised people didn’t leave. ‘‘Hume is
one of the most welcoming communities in Australia,” he said. “It’s home to people from all over the world. It’s a great place to live and has something for everyone. “You don’t have to travel far for somewhere great to take the family,” he said. ‘‘Since Hume is home to a range of industries, many of our residents work close to home and that offers a fantastic lifestyle.’’ Melbourne (12.6 per cent), Port Phillip (11.1), Yarra (10.9) and Maribyrnong (10.3) had the state’s highest departure rates.
Fab Four walk the talk A $300,000 pedestrian crossing on Romsey’s busiest stretch of road will be fully operational by mid next year. On a visit to the site on Main Street last Tuesday, Roads Minister Luke Donnellan, accompanied by Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas, said the exact location was still being determined. Romsey Primary School and residents have welcomed plans for signals near an existing school crossing, north of Regan Drive. The government is working with the school and Macedon Ranges council on the crossing’s design. Mr Donnellan said Main Street, which forms part of Melbourne-Lancefield Road, was a key route for parents, pupils and people crossing to nearby sports reserves. Ms Thomas said pedestrian-operated lights would make crossing the busy commuter road much safer for people to get around.
‘‘These new signals will increase road safety for locals, especially school kids,’’ she said. Macedon Ranges highway patrol’s Sergeant Geoff Neil said that while the crossing project was welcome, there were other problem areas in the growing town. ‘‘It’s certainly an enhancement, but the intersection of Main Street and Barry Street also needs to be looked at. The potential is certainly there for a very serious collision.’’ Work on the Main Street crossing is expected to begin shortly after Christmas. Matt Crossman

THIS SUNDAY 25th OCTOBER
How long have you lived in the Macedon Ranges? In 2004, after 36 years in Canberra, Jan and I moved to Kyneton to be closer to family living in Melbourne so we could have more personal contact, especially with our grandchildren.
8.30am-2.30pm 8.30am-2pm New stall holders/ buskers welcome. ENQUIRIES: Kaye or Leigh 5424 1466
What community groups are you involved in? Highlands100.7FM, Friends of the Kyneton Museum and Kyneton Bluestone Theatre, Kyneton Football Netball Club, Kyneton Transition Hub, Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group, U3A Kyneton, Uniting Church of Mia Mia-Kyneton and the Australian Labor Party. Mental health care and services have been of significant interest due to my personal health and that of our deceased daughter, Nicole, who died of cancer in 1996. In 2001, I was awarded a Centenary Medal for my community work in mental health.
How/when did you become involved in radio? During the 1940s and early ’50s I was an avid listener to ABC and commercial radio programs, especially sport. I can recall the Friday and Saturday nights on 3DB listening to the boxing and wrestling from Festival Hall, the Saturday footy broadcasts, the ABC descriptions of Test and Sheffield Shield matches. During my retirement from paid
to the Victorian Dog Rescue Spring Appeal (Damjan Janevski)
What do you get out of your involvement? There is much to be gained working and being with others in a positive environment. There can be difficulties and frustrations, but, if overcome, much can be achieved collectively for the good of society, community and individually.
work, I was accepted as regular caller to Sandy McCutcheon’s ABC Radio National daily weekday program on different public policy topics. I was introduced to Highlands FM by the late Charles Gaal. Have you had any funny, surreal or scary moments on air? In spite of the best possible training from Highlands FM legend Ken Helmore, I’ve made some simple mistakes when presenting the Tuesday morning program, some so simple,
technically, that I’ve been most embarrassed – like not turning on the microphone. What are some of the community’s strengths? There is a strong community ethos in the Macedon Ranges region, which is a positive to building what some know as a therapeutic, caring community. How do you like to spend your downtime? With family and friends, reading and listening to the ideas and thoughts of others.

A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL The Kilmore International School, Kilmore
Braemar College, Woodend
A
I
have been the principal at TKIS since 2011. Like many of its students and teachers, I was drawn to The Kilmore International School because of its reputation for academic results and an international education leading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma. We are a boarding and day school conveniently located in a safe rural setting in the town of Kilmore. With more than 400 students, the school has a family atmosphere where girls and boys from Melbourne, country Victoria and from around the world become part of a close-knit learning community. Our primary school is open for enrolments in years 3 to 6. Our inspiring, experienced and highly qualified teachers enjoy an exceptional relationship with their students, most of whom will attend leading universities throughout the world.
Extra academic support and enrichment is provided in after school tutorials. The co-curricular program, House system and annual weeklong camps ensure a well-rounded education for every student. International Day celebrates our social diversity and helps to raise awareness and funds for international charities. I believe an international education equips students to be world-ready and prepares them for university and successful careers. Whatever their profession, our alumni return regularly to thank their teachers and fondly recall their school days at TKIS.
s our year 12 students conclude their Braemar College education, they do so with a sense of purpose and optimism. Our focus has always been on educating the whole person. While Braemar has a strong academic program and promotes achievement in this area, success in life is about more than a good ATAR score. Success means different things to different people. My message to our year 12 students as they prepare to sit their final examinations is this: “We have provided a supportive, inclusive and rich learning environment for you to grow and develop a strong sense of self, respect for others, a connection to the environment and to the local and wider community. You have developed leadership skills and initiative, and are also equipped with the resilience and critical thinking skills to cope with adversity. You are well prepared for life beyond Braemar.” To support those students who have chosen to pursue a tertiary education, a new online initiative was recently launched by two of our
former college captains. Braemar Connect was set up by Austin Van Groningen (OC 2009) and Heath Jamieson (OC 2010) to provide a networking platform for past Braemarians, regardless of their graduating year, to connect with each other at university, TAFE and college. In this way our young school leavers have access to an informal mentoring system as they transition to tertiary study. Of course, not all of our graduates elect to go on to university. Ultimately, what really matters to us is that young people leave Braemar with a sense of purpose and a clear pathway to their future careers. Wherever that path leads, be your best self. 33 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 20, 2015
SPORT Recruit-starved Tigers welcome player cap change Lancefield Football Club will have more options to recruit after being given extra points in its player cap. The Tigers were one of eight Riddell District Football League clubs to apply to AFL Goldfields, which oversees the competition, for extra points on top of the 42 allocated to each team. Six clubs were successful. The Tigers and Wallan get six extra points, Broadford, Rockbank and Woodend-Hesket were handed an extra three points, while Melton Centrals are allowed two extra points. Diggers Rest and Macedon had their applications for a boost rejected.
AFL Victoria announced earlier this year that a statewide player points cap would be introduced next season to help even up the competitions. Tigers’ president Tony McKay said the extra points were very welcome. “We struggle to attract local players, let alone get people to come out to the club. “Kilmore wants to go to the Northern Football League. We are as far north as them and only a small country town. “A lot of players would rather play football closer to home. I’m not saying the extra points is the total answer, but it is at least something. It could give us a bit more of an option.”
The Tigers got the extra points for lack of recent on-field success and their small population base; thus the need to recruit players. The club also hasn’t had under-16 and under-18 teams for the past two seasons. McKay said he was hoping the club would have under-16s next season. “It’s a cycle that clubs go through … you have to look outside the square for players. Not having under-16s and under-18s, the players go elsewhere and don’t come back.” McKay said the club wanted to add three or four players next year. He said this year’s playing group had been re-signed before the
season ended. “We thought we would have gone better this season … we had hoped to leapfrog clubs like Macedon and Broadford, but credit to them they were able to bring in sponsorship and players. You have to keep ahead of the pack.” While disappointed with the football results, McKay was thrilled with the netball teams. Three of the four teams made finals, with the B-graders making the grand final. Netballers now want to come on board, he said. Kevin Sheedy will be guest speaker at the club on October 29. Burras fight for more points
Sunbury ace a kart king By Tara Murray Sunbury’s Jordan Ford has taken the Australia Superkart 250cc series by storm. Having previously raced sprint cars, Ford was given the opportunity to race in the Superkart series this year and hasn’t looked back. He won the state 250cc national-class title and followed it up by winning the 250 nationalclass Australian championship, held over two rounds in July and September. “It’s been awesome,” Ford said. “Slipstream and Williams Racing, who are based in Sunbury, were able to get all the equipment ready for me. “I had confidence in myself even though Superkarts was new to me. “The results came as a bit of a surprise. We worked hard on reliability and making sure we had the kart working well.” The move to Superkarts had Ford driving on the same tracks as V8 Supercars and travelling at speeds close to those of the V8s. “It’s an awesome opportunity to get on to those tracks and race,” Ford said. “It was a new opportunity offered to me and could help me progress into racing cars if I go down that path.”
The 22-year-old became the first person to win all eight races of the 250cc national-class Australian championship. He put the feat down to his experience in sprint karts and the work of his team. “It was a pretty cool feat,” he said. “A lot of failures happen in karting so you need to have a good team behind you; a lot of credit [goes] to them.” His teammate, Dale Williams, finished second in the series, Ford said it was rewarding to win the series with a Sunbury-based team supporting him. “Yes, it’s pretty good. We’ve had a strong relationship over the years. “It’s good to help them achieve their goal of winning the championship; it feels like the whole team won it.” Ford, who teaches children to drive karts, has set competing overseas as his next goal. “The plan next year is to race in the United Kingdom,” he said. “I want to prove to the world that an Australian can match the best. “Karting is a massive industry on a big scale. I’m only 22 so there’s heaps I can achieve.”

Diggers Rest Football Club will meet with AFL Goldfields on Monday in a bid to have its application for more player points approved for the 2016 season. AFL Goldfields knocked back the Burras’ initial application this week, choosing instead to monitor the Riddell league club’s situation. Diggers Rest president Chris Payne said he was very surprised his club’s request was rejected, given the Burras’ struggles at underage level. With a junior base of just 58 players, the Burras battle to achieve natural progression through under-age ranks. Diggers Rest is also the second lowest populated area in the league. The Burras believe one of the reasons they have been denied the extra points is because of recent on-field success; Diggers Rest has played in the past three Riddell grand finals. Payne said his club should not be penalised for good governance. “We have been quite successful without getting the ultimate prize,” he said. “For a club of our size and a town of our size, it shows that we do things right. “You certainly can’t be punishing good management of a football club. All we’re trying to do is make our club viable.” AFL Victoria is introducing the statewide player points cap next season in a bid to level out local football competitions. Every player is ranked at between one and six points, and each club is allowed players to a maximum total of 50 points. But the limit can be varied in individual leagues and AFL Goldfields has given Riddell clubs a cap of 42 points. Eight clubs applied to AFL Goldfields for more. Of those, Wallan and Lancefield secured an extra six, Broadford, Rockbank and Woodend-Hesket were handed an extra three and Melton Centrals will get two extra points. Macedon was the only other club to have its application rejected. Diggers Rest’s meeting with AFL Goldfields will be held on Monday night. “It is about trying to get kids into your football club,” Payne said. “Hypothetically, if we recruit a 19-year-old from the Ballarat league, he comes with three points. “All that is doing is penalising us for trying to do the right thing and trying to get kids in.” For the outcome of Diggers Rest’s meeting, go to www.starweekly.com.au Liam Twomey

Laguda takes top Cannon title By Tara Murray Bruno Laguda was named Calder Cannons’ Robert Hyde medallist on Friday night. Laguda won the TAC Cup club’s best and fairest award, narrowly squeezing out his fellow Essendon Doutta Stars teammate, Tom Wallis. Laguda hit the front in the first half of the count and finished on 96 votes, three ahead of the fast-finishing Wallis. Cannons coach Andrew Johnston said Laguda was a deserving winner. “Bruno played most of the year with us and I think he started to tire a little towards the end,” he said. “Tom had a sensational second half of the year after starting slower than he would have liked.” Wallis was also named the Cannons’ most improved player. The son of two-time Essendon premiership defender Dean Wallis, Wallis is hoping to join Essendon’s AFL list next season under the father-son rule. “I rode him pretty hard,” Johnston said. “I thought he had the talent but his attitude had a long way to go. “He worked hard and got the results and, hopefully, he is rewarded by Essendon by getting on its list.” He said Laguda had “snuck under the radar” and he hoped an AFL club would take a chance on him in next month’s national draft in Adelaide. Laguda and Wallis were clear leaders in

the vote count, with last year’s Robert Hyde medallist, Nick O’Kearney, finishing third on 64 votes. “Nick was really been pulled from pillar to post this year,” Johnston said. “He was in the AIS squad and the Vic Metro, so he didn’t play that much for us. “It was a consolidation year for him and his use and accumulation of the ball is sensational. “He showed what he can do as a 17-year-old. If he’d played more games for us he’d have been closer.” Defender Matthew Stillman won the coaches’ award. Stillman was one of several players to lead the side during the season and was given the honour of being named captain for the finals series. Johnston said Stillman’s ability to get the most out of his skills was what impressed him most. “At this age they are still very quiet and you need someone to stand up,” he said. “He isn’t the most talented guy but he got everything out of himself and the guys around him. He worked hard and led by example.” Sunbury Lions’ Mitch Conn was named the Cannons’ most courageous player. Attention for the Cannons now turns to the AFL national draft. Johnston said O’Kearney, Hisham Kerbatieh, Wallis and Callum Moore were the four players attracting most interest. Moore and O’Kearney were among the standouts for the Cannons at the national combine testing.

Rupo’s coach returns to ‘finish the job’ Rupertswood is on a singleminded mission to get back into the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Having been knocked out in the first week of B-grade finals in the past two years, Rupertswood coach John Lane is hoping for third time lucky. Lane returns to the coaching role after 12 months’ absence. “Originally, I wasn’t going to coach again,” Lane said, “but the club came to me and asked if I could help finish the job I’d started. “It’s been a four to five year journey and the playing list has changed a lot in that time. Now we have the chance to have a real crack.” This year’s make-up has a different look to the one that dominated B grade last season before losing to East Sunbury in the semi-finals. Hayden Ross, Jay King and Michael Treweek have departed to play with McIntyre Cup sides
and Nathan Shoesmith has joined Premier Cricket’s Essendon. “We need to get back up into McIntyre Cup to keep our players,” Lane said. “We seem to have covered all the bases we need to. “Aaron Forward returns to the club and is a handy opening bowler. Brandon Webber is also back with us and Mark Ryan returns from overseas. “Anthony Morrison comes across from Williamstown and brings more experience to the side.” Lane says this is the oldest side he has coached. “We have six 30-year-olds in the team,” he said. “It’s a big contrast to the team we had when we got relegated. The guys have been around long enough not to panic.”
Lane is also looking forward to seeing what the younger stars can do. He expects Forward and Webber will be an effective bowling combination and is hoping that David McDonald can top, by at least 100, the 250 runs he made last season. “He’s 20 and bats at number four,” Lane says. Rupertswood has started its season with two wins, including the defeat of Ashfield on Saturday. Batting first, Rupertswood was restricted to 8-130 off its overs, Bruce Marshall top-scoring with 40 and Lane finishing 35 not out. In reply, Ashfield struggled to 9-100. James Ryan and Warren Hall took three wickets each. Wallan, Bacchus Marsh and St Anthonys were the other B-grade winners. Tara Murray
Riddell re-learns lost art By Tara Murray Sometimes cricket is more a mental game than physical, and Riddell is hoping to conquer the mental demons that plagued players in last season’s Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Riddell struggled to chase down totals and was ultimately made to pay with a loss in the first week of finals. On Saturday, Riddell faced its first test against Sunbury, as a pointer to whether it had overcome its issues. Sunbury had made 8-171 off its 40 overs, Heath Boffey top-scoring with 47 not out. Matthew Darby led the Riddell charge, making 59 not out of his side’s 5-172 after taking 2-26. Riddell coach Heath Wadden was rapt his side had passed the test with flying colours. “It was one of our best wins for a long time. We were under the pump for the last 20 overs and needed seven to eight runs an over. “We ended up chasing down 170-odd; we have turned a corner.” “Matt [Darby] is only training once a week at the moment,” Wadden said. “He’s trying out for the Essendon VFL side and has been training hard for that.” The coach said that with five new faces on the team he couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. “We were mentally beat late last year and couldn’t chase down a lot of totals. “We got a bit busy picking up blokes who could hold a bat. “In our line-up, our number seven through to 11 can bat in any order,” Wadden said. “Matt batted at 11 in the first round and we brought him up to five this week. “Hayden Ross, our standout with the bat in round one, didn’t bat this week.” Wadden said other new players Cameron Clayton, Michael Treweek and Matthew Shaughnessy had all played their roles. And Riddell expects to get even stronger. “The benefit of having these extra players means we have a bit more depth,” Wadden said. “Players are making runs in the twos. Michael Day, who played a lot in the firsts last season, made 70-odd and put his hand up. “Jack Baker missed this week and will be back and our best bowler, Cameron Moran, will come back into the team, too. “It will be tough at selection this week.” Next up for Riddell is Gisborne, the only other team undefeated after the first two rounds. On Saturday, Gisborne easily defeated reigning premiers Sunbury United. Diggers Rest beat Woodend, while Romsey and Bacchus Marsh tied. Matthew Darby starred with bat and ball. Pitch for under-17 softballers The Sunbury Softball Association is looking to add more under-17 players to its growing organisation. While increasing numbers in other age groups has seen the formation of a fourth club in the association, numbers in the under-17 competition are dwindling. New association president Mark Nicholls said the search was on for more players to fill three under-17 sides, and perhaps even a fourth. “Last year we had three solid [under-17] teams in the competition,” he said. “[But] currently we have about 25 players, which is equal to two and half teams. “It we can fill a third side we will have a more even competition like last year. We would dearly love a fourth side – that would mean there is no bye.” The under-17 competition is mixed and for players of all abilities. “Experienced or inexperienced it doesn’t matter,” Nicholls said. “We have a good coaching set-up. A lot of people haven’t played softball when they come down here.” Nicholls said the rest of the association was thriving. “We have 70 children in tee ball and the under-13 age group and there’s six under-13 teams,” he said. “With the growth of the three clubs and to assist with fixtures it was decided to have a fourth club. “There’s five teams in the women’s competition and it’s flying. The men’s competition has four teams.” He said the next goal was to get another diamond so the association could start expanding. Tara Murray
Sunbury does the business with ease Sunbury was firing on all cylinders in Bowls Victoria’s pennant division 2, section 2 on Saturday. Sunbury won three of its rinks over Glenroy convincingly and took the points in the fourth to win the match 84 (18)-47 (0). Deeon Dean’s rink was again the standout, winning 23-6. Elise Cowan triumphed 20-11, Carla Odgers clinched her rink 22-14, and Mark Cowan got home 19-16 in the only close one. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said the win was easier than he and his teammates expected. “We thought it would be a bit tricky, but we got the win comfortably having carried on the momentum from last week,” he said. In Central Highlands Bowls, there were four one-sided results. Gisborne, Bacchus Marsh and Lancefield all won 18-0 against Woodend, Kyneton Golf Blue and Romsey respectively. In the other match, Kyneton Golf Gold defeated Kyneton 106 (14)-84 (4). After two rounds, Gisborne, Lancefield and Kyneton Golf Gold are unbeaten. Tara Murray
