Bush bashers beware Macedon Ranges council will tighten surveillance and bring in security measures for hikers at Kyneton’s Bald Hill Reserve after trail bike riders ripped up the bush. Council and Friends of Bald Hill members are concerned about the long-term damage trail bikes may cause both native vegetation and communities of native birds and animals, some threatened species, at the reserve. Friends of Bald Hill president Carolyn Robb said it was disappointing vandals had caused environmental damage and disturbed wildlife habitat with their illegal riding. “It happened Sunday two weeks ago, and you can still see the damage,” Ms Robb said. “They’d been doing circles, they’ve dug up a lot of the soil that had a lot of native plants in there. It’s a significant area that they’re digging up. “They haven’t even kept to the trail, and therefore lots of the orchids will be gone because of that. “The burrows are dispersed across the site, which also supports a range of other important flora and fauna, including threatened lilies and orchids as well as the brush-tailed phascogale.” She said logs were laid over the small tracks to create jumps, which also “ripped up” more of the bush. “There are signs up to say no motorbikes are allowed up at Bald Hill,” Ms Robb said. “This is 96 hectares of nationally significant flora and fauna, and we
TE EDIA Y M M I VER DELI
are very disappointed that people would do this.” Signage at the reserve states that passive recreation pursuits, including bushwalking, birdwatching and nature photography, are welcomed in the reserve, but trail bike riding is not allowed. Ms Robb said trail bike riders need to be made aware of where they can and can’t ride.

Alternatives for trail bike riders in the Macedon Ranges include many tracks in both the Cobaw and Wombat State Forests. Macedon Ranges council chief executive Peter Johnston said council would enforce no bikes in the bush rules at the reserve. Council’s local laws officers plan to increase patrols of the Bald Hill area. “It’s particularly disappointing, especially when the community is so active in looking after Bald Hill,” Mr Johnston said. Bald Hill Reserve has been recognised recently as having one of the largest remaining populations of endangered Brown Toadlets, or Bibron’s Toadlet, which makes an ‘ark’ call all year round. These creatures live in small, fragile burrows just under the surface of the soil in both forests and grasslands.

Two free tips not mulch solution By Esther Lauaki Macedon Ranges council has changed its service to get rid of green waste, just as clean-ups get underway for the upcoming fire season. The council announced last week it will introduce a new voucher system next month at its three transfer stations at Kyneton, Woodend and Romsey. Vouchers will entitle ratepayers to dump two free small trailer-loads of green waste at transfer stations each year from September 1. Mayor Graham Hackett said the new system
would replace the existing free green drop service, and “couldn’t have come at a better time”. “Spring is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to get out and prepare our properties for the warmer weather to come,” he said. But Macedon Ranges Residents Association president Christine Pruneau said it appeared council had not thought through the consequences of the change. “The biggest impact of this will be for people on large blocks and those living outside the town,” Ms Pruneau said.
“I don’t see how this will encourage clean-ups before the fire season.” Mt Macedon resident Philip Henkel is also concerned, saying landowners with larger blocks will have to pay dearly. “Two free vouchers might be okay if you are on a standard 500 square-metre lot, but for those of us who are on a 5000 to 6000 square meter block of land, it’s clearly inadequate.” Mr Henkel said it would cost him more than $50 per trip if he had to pay. A small trailer load costs $28 without a voucher. Some residents will still be able to burn rubbish, provided they get a permit, which was
another change to council’s waste policy earlier this year. “There is a disparity of property sizes, and I think this scheme might deter people from recycling their green waste because why pay when you can burn it?” Mr Henkel said. “Our waste system needs a thorough good look at it.” Ratepayers will get their vouchers in the post with annual rates notices, due out this month. Charges will apply for larger loads, commercial customers, people living outside the shire and those with more than two trailer-loads a year. www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/waste

When Jannyse Williams joined Woodend’s heritage society 20 years ago, searching for information in old newspapers meant using a microfilm reader. Ms Williams, now the Woodend and District Heritage Society president, is proud to say the group has upgraded its technology and purchased 12 computers. “It used to be painstaking work,” she said. “To find a relevant article, researchers often had to wind through months of editions. “Pages whizzed past on a screen. Then, when the correct day had been found, they had to scour headlines to pick out what they wanted. It would give you a migraine very quickly.” The society’s computers were so old they didn’t have Microsoft Windows, and the internet was in its infancy when they purchased them, she said. Conmen fleece elderly victim
KAREN LAING, SUE DIXON, JUDY BUCKMASTER, SUE WHITFIELD AND SONNIA MAY
Thanks for endless care By Esther Lauaki A family has gone ‘the extra mile’ to show its thanks to Kyneton District Health’s (KDH) palliative nursing staff who cared for their loved one. Judy Buckmaster recently hosted a “feel good day” with her sister Sue Dixon, bringing friends together for a vibrant celebration of life through colour, fashion and wardrobe advice. The fundraiser was their way to bring death into the open and acknowledge the palliative care given by KDH to their cousin Glen. Last week the sisters presented the hospital
with a cheque for $750 raised at the celebration, which coincided with August 8’s Dying to Know Day. The commemorative day fostered conversations and community activities around death, dying and bereavement. KDH acute nurse manager Sue Whitfield said the hospital worked to promote conversations about death and end-of-life care, including advanced care planning. “These plans are about quality of life, finding a way to keep you at the centre of your care before you become too unwell and unable to communicate or make medical decisions,” she said. Director of nursing Karen Laing said talking
about death was an important part of life. “The conversations are not something that we have to avoid or be scared about,” she said. Early access to palliative care can help people with a chronic illness to have a better quality of life, while providing support to carers. The KDH team delivers palliative care across the Macedon Ranges and has a dedicated palliative care suite and respite beds, as well as a community nursing provider, ensuring what it calls seamless transitions for patients between home, hospital and respite care. A Sunbury resident is warning vulnerable elderly residents to be vigilant after claiming that two tradesman fleeced her of $800 for a service she never asked for. The woman, who asked not to be named, said two tradesman came to her home on August 1 and offered to clean her spouting and reseal a pathway outside the house. “I hadn’t called anyone to come to my house,” she said. “These two men knocked on my door and they were in [high-visibility] work uniforms and offered me these services for $300. “They were there for a short time and then kept telling me there were more problems and that it would cost me more and more. “I ended up giving them $800 in the end.” A friend of the woman’s checked the spouting and found that leaves and dirt had not been disturbed. The sealing of the pathway was not completed either, she said. “I called the number that was given to me that day, but there has been no reply and the phone has been turned off,” she said. The woman said she reported the men to police but was told there was not much they could do. “I’ve been very lonely lately because I recently lost my sister so I feel very stupid to have believed them,” she said. “I just want to warn elderly people who live alone not to repeat my mistake.” Esther Lauaki

Women urged to screen Almost 4500 Sunbury women have not taken advantage of free breast screens in recent years, and Hume’s ‘pink mayor’ Helen Patsikatheodorou wants them to get their priorities right. “I am a statistic; one of the one in eight Victorian women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and so I am acutely aware that this free service can have a substantial impact on people’s lives,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said. “Perhaps women have been putting off getting their breast screen due to the winter chill – please don’t .” BreastScreen Victoria’s new Sunbury clinic opened in April and has many appointments available from this week. Cr Patsikatheodorou said finding a time that fits in with busy schedules has never been easier.
“I am quite concerned that some women have been putting off getting a mammogram,” she said. Between 2013 and 2015, Sunbury registered a participation rate of 60 per cent for free breast screen services, higher than the statewide average of 54 per cent. But about 4500 Sunbury area women in the 50-69 age group didn’t have a breast screen, yet 75 per cent of women diagnosed will be over the age of 50, and most will have no family history of the disease. Cr Patsikatheodorou said a breast screen once every two years could be life-saving. Appointments at BreastScreen Victoria Sunbury can be made online at breastscreen. org.au or by calling 13 20 50. Good health a real business
By Esther Lauaki A high-flying Romsey beef farmer is looking to go global via the airline food industry. Frank Pereira, owner of Millhouse Pastoral, is exporting beef directly into high-end Singapore restaurants, and plans to expand into Indonesia and possibly Taiwan later this year. Mr Pereira runs an Angus herd on a 65-hectare property after buying the Romsey farm from his wife Suzie Wilson’s parents in 2011. “We turn about 200 head of cattle when conditions are good,” he said. “We’re a reasonably large operation for the Macedon Ranges, but we never want to be too big. We’re boutique and we prefer it that way.” Doors continue to open globally as popularity grows for the couple’s grass-fed product. “I was offered an opportunity to teach agricultural farming to year nine to 12 students at Assumption College in Kilmore, and I also enjoy that work. I try to foster a love of farming in the next generation. I want them to know that if we don’t have farmers, we don’t eat.” Mr Pereira says he’s in the process of signing a memorandum of understanding with Taiwanese buyers, while the Indonesian connection is also promising. Also in prospect is Millhouse Pastoral supplying beef for meals to all the international airlines that fly in and out of Changi Airport. “We moved from Canberra, where I was teaching, and when we arrived in the Macedon Ranges we were awestruck by the quality of food here, and that’s why we decided to buy the farm. We’re now seeing a keen interest in grassfed aged cattle and we’ve aligned ourselves with Little Farms, a gourmet food producer in Singapore, to expand into the overseas market.
Frank Pereira, of Millhouse Pastoral, is doing big things in beef exports. (Shawn Smits)
“There’s high demand out there for boutique products. If a diner is spending [the equivalent of] $200 for a piece of ribeye, they want to know the name of the farmer, the name of the cow, where it came from and what it ate.” He said one of the biggest challenges was sourcing appropriate stock, to sell into the

Asian markets. “It’s not so much finding stock, it’s about finding good quality stock, to meet the Millhouse brand,” Mr Pereira said. “The soil, high rainfall and temperate climate here make for great conditions to farm. That’s why we will source cattle from the Macedon Ranges to meet demand ”
Kyneton District Health has been working hard over recent years to re-establish itself in new digs and with renewed community confidence. That work has been recognised with the selection of the hospital’s acute ward as a finalist in the Macedon Ranges Business Excellence awards. Director of nursing Karen Laing said the recognition was much appreciated. “We were nominated for this award by a member of the public who was a recipient of our services, which makes this even more special,” she said. “What is more delightful is to know how far Kyneton District health has come over the years. “We have done a lot of hard work around community engagement and allaying any concerns the public might have about coming to our hospital.” The awards highlight businesses that provide an outstanding service to the shire and beyond, and will be on at Kyneton town hall on September 14. Finalists were picked by a judging panel of 10 independent business professionals who do not work or live in the Macedon Ranges. Judges compiled a shortlist and went on site visits before deciding on finalists. In the line-up are cafes owners, retailers, health providers and food producers, from among more than 400 business nominations to this year’s awards. Esther Lauaki

Samoa meets Sunbury Traditional Samoan dancers will showcase their culture and their polytechnic across Australia during September, and Sunbury’s Salesian College is on their itinerary. A troupe of 45 students from Don Bosco Technical Centre in Alafua, Samoa will perform at a siva community concert hosted by Salesian College on August 28. The free concert will be part of a three-week promotional tour by the students. They will perform at parishes, schools, youth centres and communities around the country. Salesian College deputy principal Dr Michael Grace said the principal of Don Bosco Technical Centre, Father Chris Ford, was an alumni of Salesian College, which sparked a partnership with colleges in Australia. The Don Bosco Technical Centre provides
second-chance education for boys and young men, aged 16 to 22 years, who have not successfully completed mainstream secondary schooling. “Most of the boys come from poor families, many previously dropped out of school, and many face serious family and social problems,” he said. “Since its inception in 1989, the Don Bosco Technical Centre has been renowned for its traditional siva, meaning dance, which is also a deeply ingrained and essential element of Samoan life and culture.” The free Siva community concert will be held at St Anne’s community centre on Sunday August 28 at 7pm. Land grab, smaller lots opposed By Esther Lauaki Macedon Ranges Residents Association is calling for the Planning Minister to reject council’s plans for smaller lot sizes and more houses on rich agricultural land near Kyneton and Romsey. Minister Richard Wynne has yet to give his approval to Macedon Ranges council about key planning changes to rural living zones in New Gisborne, Gisborne, Gisborne South and Riddells Creek. At its July meeting, the council considered
an independent planning panel report on the proposed C110 amendment to its ‘In The Rural Living Zone’ strategy, which seeks to manage rural living opportunities in the shire to 2045. Councillors determined to split their amended strategic plan to allow subdivisions to go ahead in areas other than Kyneton South and Romsey North. Residents association secretary Christine Pruneau wants the whole strategy abandoned. “We want to see the minister look at the impact that this will have on this area,” she said. “Carving up rich agricultural land for
development is not what you do if you’re protecting this area. This is what we need to be protected from.” Ms Pruneau said a policy to protect the Macedon Ranges was introduced in 1975 and supported by legislation to recognise the value of the region at a state level. “There’s a public interest in the drinking water catchments, nature conservation, recreation and landscapes,” Ms Pruneau said. “All of those should be considered when making any decisions.” Council director of planning and
environment Sophie Segafredo said the council had adopted the panel’s recommendations, with further work to be undertaken in coming months, including consultation with relevant parties, before part two of the amendment is reconsidered by the council. “The panel recommended further work be done by council in regard to the ‘change areas’ proposed for Kyneton and Romsey, and this will form part of the amendment,” she said. The independent planning panel report is at www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/AmendmentC110

Wind-swept beaches and mountain forests have inspired Macedon Ranges artist William Ritchie all his life. He has been fascinated by the natural world since his childhood at Warrnambool, which lead him to become a biological scientist and wildlife artist. A collection of Ritchie’s art, Living Wild, is on display at The Gallery in Mt Macedon until September 5. “The inspiration for the collection is, in the most part, the wildlife and scenes typical of the Macedon Ranges area,” he said. “It will also include a few works from the Warrnambool area where I grew up. “In all my work, my passion is not just to achieve a realist, accurate depiction of the subject, but to try to showcase the subtle details and characters of my subjects and their environment that are less obvious to most.” “It is great to help people understand the

Walk together with love
People power plans learning
By Esther Lauaki Hundreds of people will lace up their walking shoes and hit the ground next month in remembrance of loved ones lost to suicide. Annie Rowland, from Woodend, will be among those joining in Lifeline’s Out of the Shadows event this year – a series of national suicide prevention walks held to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. Registrations are now open for the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group’s walk on September 11 at Woodend Children’s Park in Nicholson Street. Ms Rowland said it would be the third walk hosted in Woodend and a great opportunity to raise awareness about their movement. “This walk is such an important opportunity for our local and surrounding community to come together – firstly to acknowledge and remember those we have loved and lost to suicide, and to show our support to those who have been bereaved by suicide,” she said. “Just as importantly, we walk together to raise awareness of the prevalence of mental health issues, and to seek out ways to have new and open conversations about mental health issues and suicide prevention. “We believe, if we can do that, we are on the right road to reduce the stigma associated with mental ill health which so often creates an unnecessary barrier to help seeking.” She said that those who walk come to remember someone or because they, or someone they know, has a mental illness. “This is a special time to make sure that people in our community know they are not alone in their experience,” Ms Rowland said. “There is real power in people coming together on any issue.
Gerry, Jenny, Annie, Janet and Dianne will join in a Woodend walk called Out of the Shadows on September 11 to raise awareness about suicide and mental health issues. (Shawn Smits)
“If we can all work together in the Macedon Ranges to bring a collective consciousness to this issue, to inform and educate ourselves then we have a much greater chance of making a real difference. “No one person or one organisation can do it alone.”
NEWS
Latest figures show that more than 2800 Australians died from suicide last year. The Woodend Suicide Prevention Action Group walk steps out at 9am on September 11 at Woodend. Get involved, by joining a walk or organising one, go online at http://bit.ly/2aCaELL.
Teachers, health and business professionals, an historian and a student are among 11 local people selected to help shape the future of Hume council’s new global learning centre at Sunbury. A new community advisory group has been set up to support the planning and development of the new education hub, which will be built next to Sunbury’s Macedon Street library. It is due to open early 2019, and Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said there would be opportunities for the wider community to give their input and feedback in the planning stages. “The new centre will provide formal and informal community spaces for residents and local organisations, allowing for private and organised study, social interaction, library services, exhibitions, seminars and conferences, meeting and training opportunities,” she said. “Our community advisory group will play an important role in helping to shape and guide the planning and development of the new facility.” Cr Patsikatheodorou said that council would be consulting with Sunbury people over the next few years on the design, development and future uses of the new learning hub, at which training and education opportunities will be tailored to meet local needs and aspirations. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
MY PLACE Gisborne mother of two Sonia Hennessy discovered Kangatraining while researching exercise courses … now she’s offering mums a training option that includes their bubs. The 43-year-old fitness trainer spoke to Esther Lauaki.
We moved to Gisborne about five years ago. We moved to Australia from the United Kingdom, then lived in St Kilda before looking for a home that was close enough to Melbourne to be able to commute, and far enough out to enjoy the country lifestyle. I’m a qualified fitness instructor and a certified Kangatraining instructor, so launched the program in Sunbury. What is Kangatraining? Dubbed ‘baby-wearing aerobics’, Kangatraining is a complete workout during which both cardiovascular fitness and muscular capacity and strength are enhanced. Babywearing has been shown to have benefits on minimizing the risk of postnatal depression. Kangatraining at Sunbury and Macedon Ranges donates $1 per person per class to Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia. What made you want to be a Kangatrainer? I launched Kangatraining in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges because I found there was nothing like it in the region. I know that being active is critical to keeping up with the demands of two young children, but I found limited fitness classes that cater for mums with babies. Participating in exercise classes with
babies or young children can be a nightmare. It’s difficult to take a baby to an exercise class, especially when they can’t participate. Why do you think that this program will help mothers in Sunbury and Macedon Ranges? Kangatraining is focused on strengthening the muscles that have been stretched, pulled and weakened from pregnancy and childbirth. It’s pelvic floor safe and lots of fun! We don’t take ourselves too seriously. It’s all about having fun and getting stronger, without feeling pressured. The workout has been developed in consultation with midwives, and physiotherapists, so the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, as well as correct posture, are all given special attention. Unlike traditional mums and bubs’ classes, Kangatraining mums don’t have to worry about a red-faced, screaming baby during class … they get to snuggle and be part of the action. What’s your favourite thing about Gisborne? Space and the close-knit community feel of the area. We spent a lot of time living in apartments both overseas and here in Australia. We wanted to get back to having a lot of space where we live. Gisborne gives us the best of both worlds … space and proximity to the city.
(Damjan Janevski)

A bonanza for larger families, this house – on about 631 square metres – has three living zones and five carpeted bedrooms, along with a study that combines with a separate store room in the former third car space. Living spaces are a lounge room, a rumpus room and a very big, tiled family-meals area, the latter opening to a huge, gabled pergola above timber decking. The kitchen has an abundance of storage and bench space, a dishwasher and stainless-steel 900mm cooker. Four bedrooms (each with wardrobe) share a grey-and-white main bathroom and separate toilet; the main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The freshly painted and newly carpeted house has ducted heating and cooling, and the double garage has a back roller door. The third garage could easily be converted back for car storage but, as is, makes a great work-from-home space.
Recently made over to a high standard, this appealing house on about 788 square metres has a pitch-perfect locale, around the corner from Mollison Street retail and within a 10 minute amble of Piper Street’s well-regarded eateries and retro stuff. The abode’s interior colour palette is a continuation of the monochromatic exterior, with black window frames and very stylish designer tiles in wet rooms emphasising the on-trend approach. A large, grey-carpeted lounge room (with split-system) is separate to the meals zone next to the chic kitchen, all-new and all-white, with underbench oven and electric cooktop. Three grey-carpeted bedrooms share a smart new bathroom. A deep, covered verandah faces a very neat north-facing backyard with space to add lifestyle treats, such as a chook house and vegie patch, and there’s a garage/workshop. The aquatics centre is within cooee.

“A TWO EDGED SWORD”
$473,000
The Reserve Bank has reduced interest rates again in an attempt to stimulate the economy - an attempt in vain I fear. fear
Freshly painted and with new carpets throughout, there is absolutely nothing to do but settle into all that the country lifestyle has to offer of and still enjoy a nice stroll into town. • Master bedroom with lovely bay window feature, fitted WIR and ensuite • 3 more large bedrooms (2 with BIR’s), and a study/office with access to the dbl garage • An abundance of space in the open plan kitchen/meals along with 2 more living areas including huge lounge room and rumpus room • Fantastic outdoor covered entertaining area complete with spa bath • Study/office with access to the dbl garage • Solid fuel heating, split system,3 phase power • Fabulous size back yard with garden shed
A reduction in interest rates is a “two edged sword”. Those who are thinking of buying property, or, or who have a mortgage on a variable interest rate will benefit, providing the rate cut is passed on by the lender. lender The “down” side however, however is that those who have saved hard and have a significant amount of savings to provide cash flow will find that they are earning nothing on that hard earned cash and yet they will still pay exorbitant bank fees and, quite possibly, tax! Not to mention that credit cards are still attracting quite extraordinarily high fees and interest. In short, an interest rate cut in theory may benefit some, will disadvantage others and the banks will continue to make obscene amounts of profit! To those who are thinking of investing in property either as an owner occupier or as a landlord, this is the time to do so, but shop around for the very best deal and the lowest interest rate!

30 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 16, 2016
1232843-CG26-16
SCOREBOARD
SPORT Lions take control of their finals fate Sunbury Lions hopes of finishing third in the Ballarat Netball League are in their own hands. A win against Darley in this week’s final round will ensure they finish third while a loss would most likely mean finishing fourth. The Lions’ match against second-placed North Ballarat City on Saturday proved to be a vital one in terms of ladder position going into the finals. After an even first quarter, the Lions shot ahead and were able to stay for a 55-49 victory. Lions captain Beck Anstey said they were set on beating City to make sure they were in control of their own finals fate. “A lot of people had written us off,” she said. “We had put so much importance on winning against North Ballarat City – we had to win this game or we had to get lucky in the final round. “If we can win next week against Darley and then win the first final, it gives a bit of breathing space and the double chance.”
Missing players through illness, the Lions knew they needed some experienced players to come in for Saturday’s game. They called on former Lions’ Elly Randall and Chloe Curran. They also had Rupertswood trio Amy Starzer, Ailish McCormack and Alex Maher play. “I was pretty happy when Chloe showed up [for the start of the second quarter],” said Anstey, who started in attack. She said coach Karen Meredith was concerned about her lack of shooting impact. “I was just happy we weren’t down at that stage,” she said. Anstey, who moved back to her more familiar defensive role after quarter-time, said she had picked up where she left of in terms of playing with Randall, who returned from playing in England four weeks ago. “Playing with Elly is like riding a bike,” she said. Curran scored 37 goals, while centre court general Prue Stanley was best on court.
Anstey said her team would need a bit of luck in terms of the timing of the finals. Three Rupertswood players look like they could qualify to play for the Lions, but those players will also be in finals action in the Riddell District Netball League. Anstey said the Lions would be blessed with more selection options than had been the case in previous seasons. “We need to have luck go our way … hopefully we have all bases covers,” she said. The Lions enter the finals having won their past four games. Anstey said having Meredith take over from her as coach had really helped. “She’s a fresh set of eyes and sometimes we need someone to call us out for accountability.” Tara Murray Lauren Gilchrist, stepping up from B grade, helps Sunbury Lions to a win against North Ballarat City. (Shawn Smits)
Sharks ready for finals By Tara Murray With a finals spot already in the bag, Rupertswood had nothing to lose going into the final two rounds of the RDFL season. The first contest was against second-placed Macedon on Saturday, and then they take on third-placed Riddell this week. The Sharks knew – win, lose or draw – they would still be in fifth position at the end of the regular season. Earlier in the season, the Cats ran all over the Sharks in the final quarter. On Saturday, the Sharks made sure history didn’t repeat itself, this time holding on to win 13.9 (87)-12.4 (76). Coach Kevin Fitzgerald said his side had learnt its lessons from close matches earlier in the season. “We’re learning a lot about each other, and controlling the game, and what to do in certain situations. We were a little bit better at it today. “I think once you’re ahead on the scoreboard there’s a lot more options … if you’re chasing, it’s a lot harder to do,” Fitzgerald said. “Definitely happy we were ahead, but we shouldn’t have given up as many goals as we did in the last quarter.” The usual standouts such as Brett Chambers, Brent Swallow and Todd Podolczak were best on ground, but many younger Sharks stood up under the pressure when the Cats attacked late in the game. “Patty Scanlon didn’t have the best day, but in the last quarter he was able to do some good things,” Fitzgerald said. “Billy Cannolo [who kicked three goals] was really good, and they are the future of the club. “Luke Cannon … is another.” The Sharks know they have nothing to lose this week against a Bombers’ side they defeated earlier in the year. But they will have to wait and see the extent of Chris Kaye’s hand injury, while Dylan Featon will miss several weeks after hurting his ankle while training with the Calder Cannons. Joel West and Steve Burlak are due to return either this week or for the first week of finals. West, who missed Saturday’s win because of concussion, is a real advantage for the club. “He can mark it and kick it, and he wins own ball in the middle. He’s not just a tap ruckman, he gives us another onballer,” Fitzgerald said. “Jordie [Braddy] has been a lion-heart.” The Sharks will face Broadford or Riddell in an elimination final in two weeks. The race for sixth spot will go down to the final round after Lancefield and Sunbury Kangaroos won on Saturday against Woodend-Hesket and Romsey, respectively. Both sides are equal on 32 points, with Wallan a further game back.
Tigers weather Storm in tough run home Kyneton did its finals hopes no harm with its upset win over Strathfieldsaye in the Bendigo Football League. The match against Storm was the first in a three-match run against the top three sides on the run home, and it started the right way for the Tigers. Kyneton flew out of the blocks with eight scoring shots to two in the first quarter to open up a 26-point lead. The Storm found the scoreboard in the second quarter, but were still trailing at the main break. The second half was a defensive tussle with goals hard to come by. For a second time, the Tigers held the Storm goal-less in a quarter, and had the game in hand heading into the last quarter. They increased their lead by one point in the final quarter, to win 10.12 (72)-6.9 (45). Nathan Thompson was the main man up forward for the Tigers, kicking four goals. Rhys Magin put in his second best on ground performance in as many weeks to lead his side to the win. The win gives the Tigers a bit more breathing space when facing Kangaroo Flat in the hunt for a finals spot. The Tigers currently sit fifth, only percentage behind fourth, but a game and percentage ahead of sixth-placed Kangaroo Flat. The Tigers this week take on second-placed Golden Square. Gisborne didn’t get the result it was after against South Bendigo. Playing one of the two sides they have already beaten this season, the Bulldogs were hoping to record a third win. It wasn’t the case with South Bendigo, kicking four goals to one in the final to win, 13.15 (93)-9.6 (60). Jake Conolan was the only multiple goalscorer for the Bulldogs, with Shannon Greetham named best in the loss. In the netball, Gisborne added another win to its tally as it looks to its finals spot. The Bulldogs put in the most dominant performance of the round, smashing South Bendigo 80-34. The win ensures the Bulldogs stay in third position with two rounds remaining.

Temperature rises as Jets turn off the Heat at home
Sunbury Jets’ Courtney Duever had a great contest against fellow import Alli Gloyd. (Louise Donges/Sunraysia Daily)
As it’s done many times this season, Sunbury Jets defence set the tone for a big win in Big V women’s division 1. After taking the first week of finals off, courtesy of finishing top of the ladder, the Jets made the trip to Mildura for the first game in their best of three semi-final series against Mildura Heat. The Jets were the ones to bring on the heat, applying the blowtorch early and setting the tone for most of the match. As good teams do, the Heat responded in the second quarter, but couldn’t keep the momentum up in the second half, and the Jets won 82-59. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said he couldn’t have predicted such a large a winning margin before the game.
“To win by 23 points was a surprise,” he said. “They are a lot better side when playing at home. Defensively, we were pretty good.” Kereama said they had expected the Heat to respond at some point of the game, but his side had the answers every time. “They made some big baskets at times, and we knew it would be a tight contest,” he said. “Our group responded, and got stops when they were needed. We put focus on defence, and to keep them in the 50s for a third time this season is a great achievement.” Kereama was full of praise for the defensive efforts of Emma Mahady on Heat star Vanessa Power. “She kept her to 15 points and she had to hit some really hard shots. “Emma got 13 points herself.”
Cats stake late claim By Tara Murray A cat has been thrown among the pigeons in the fight for top two spots in the Riddell District Netball League. All season it has appeared as though Rupertswood and Riddell would fill those placings, as they have in the previous two years, but Macedon could quite easily find themselves in second spot after this Saturday’s games. The Cats had nothing to lose going into the season’s final two rounds. Guaranteed to finish at least third, something they were happy with, they took on and beat Rupertswood on Saturday. Both sides had periods of dominance in the game, but it came down to the final seconds, the Cats winning 50-49. For coach Ciara Stewart, winning was a bonus. The Cats appeared to be the better side for the first half, leading by as many as eight goals, but they lost that lead late in the third term. In trouble in the final quarter, they found another gear and kept their composure to take the win. Stewart said changes to the attacking end didn’t work and once they went back to the original combinations, they got their game going again. “We went into this game thinking it didn’t matter and we were going to finish third and were really happy with third,” Stewart said. “There had been hope for top two. I think not having the pressure of knowing there was something on the line is what we needed. “If we won it’d be amazing; if we didn’t we had to make sure we didn’t lose by too much.” Tara Burnip and Chloe Wilson shared the goals with 25 apiece. Burnip was adjudged best on court, with Stewart saying she was proud of how the young goaler handled the pressure. Sharks coach Di McCormack said she wasn’t too unhappy with the performance, though her players had become flustered in the dying minutes. “We had the hardest run coming home, in all grades,” she said. “We knew we had finals starting two weeks out. “I think it’ll make us go in stronger. I’d rather that than easy games – seeing where we fall short. “We’ll get better.” Tess Abbott was named the Sharks’ best player, while Kirsten Daley also impressed after moving into wing defence in the second half. The Sharks face Riddell, who moved above them on the ladder, in the final round. A loss could see the Sharks slip to third, behind the Cats. Sixth spot also remains up for grabs, with Lancefield moving ahead of Diggers Rest on percentage. A win against Romsey in the final round would see the Tigers take the finals spot. A loss and Burras win against Sunbury Kangaroos would see the spot go to the Burras.
Monique Stevens and Chelsea Burns were also important defensively, while Courtney Duever (25 points, 18 rebounds) had a thrilling match-up with fellow import Alli Gloyd. The Jets will host game two, and three if needed, at Boardman Stadium this weekend. Game two starts at 7pm on Saturday night. “They have to travel down to us now,” Kereama said. “It’s the little things they have to think about. We were mentally and physically prepared. “We’re looking forward to a full house, to perform in front of a large crowd at home. “We are focusing on one game at a time, and we’re focused on getting the job done on Saturday.” Tara Murray
Lions claim redemption Sunbury Lions have made sure there was no repeat of the previous result against North Ballarat City by all but sealing third spot in the Ballarat Football League. Left to rue a poor third-quarter last time the two teams met, Lions coach Rick Horwood said his players had made a real focus on not making the same mistakes. With their leaders to the fore, the Lions were in control on the scoreboard in the first half. While they lost the third quarter, this time it was only by three points, allowing them to maintain a four-goal buffer. The Lions finished the job off in the final quarter for a 19.10 (124)-13.7 (85) win. Horwood said it was a good, four-quarter performance. “The third quarter has been our Achilles heel and there’s been a big focus on that,” he said. “We wanted to redeem ourselves from six weeks ago. Our leaders led really well in an even spread. We didn’t have a bad player.” Alik Magin and ruckman David Kovacevic were the best two players on the ground, with Magin awarded his fifth straight best-on-ground performance. Horwood lauded the job done by Adam Short in restricting league leading goalkicker Derick Micallef to three goals. Jesse McInneny kicked five goals and Jack Landt kicked four. Horwood said the Lions came out of the game with no injuries and would have a hard task at selection times in coming weeks. In good news, damage to Grant Valles’ hand wasn’t as bad as expected and he is looking at being back for the first round of the finals. The Lions, who face Darley in the final round, sit in third place, a game and percentage ahead of North Ballarat City. But they have seen first-hand how big percentage swings in the final round can have a big impact. The Devils, last year’s premiers, need a win in the final round to play finals. “We need to make sure we focus on winning the game this week and not focus on finals,” Horwood said. “We’re not getting ahead of ourselves and it won’t be easy against Darley. We could be playing them two weeks in a row.” The Lions’ reserves side also sits third on the ladder. Tara Murray
