Friendliness, to a tea

Woodend bakers will have their cake and eat it, too, at an upcoming community fundraiser. The local Red Cross branch will host its annual Big Cake Bake on October 16 to raise money for the charity to continue its work in Woodend. Co-ordinator Robyn Grant (pictured) says the event is aimed at bringing people together. “Although our baking will be the star, this is a wonderful way to spend some time with each other in the community, catch up with friends and help the Red Cross with the vast amount of service it provides here and overseas,” Ms Grant says. “We’re serving an afternoon tea of our own delicious baking … [local entertainers] Miranda’s Picnic will be singing for us and we’ll be raffling off the most amazing cake creations from local bakers, almost too beautiful to eat.” The Cake Bake is from 1-3pm at the Woodend Library Community Centre. Tickets are $7.50 for adults and for children under 12 a gold coin will gain entry. Esther Lauaki

‘Sky road can fix havoc’ By Esther Lauaki Traffic congestion in Sunbury has sparked a call for a “sky road” by Liberal MP Bernie Finn. The Bulla-based western metropolitan MP wants a third rail crossing in the township. Currently there are rail crossings at Station Street and the overpass at Macedon Street. In Parliament a fortnight ago, Mr Finn floated the idea of building a third crossing, or “sky road” as he described it, over the railway line near Horne Street, Sunbury. Mr Finn’s call comes weeks after a driver fled

his car when it crashed into a boom gate at the Station Street rail crossing, causing a two-hour gridlock during peak hour. “It’s an issue that is long-running in the township,” he said. “As things stand, there are two ways of getting from one side of the railway line to the other in Sunbury, and from time to time one or both of those avenues are blocked, which, of course, causes no end of havoc in the township.” Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said the most recent incident highlighted the need for the third rail crossing.

“With two crossings and Sunbury rapidly growing, there only has to be one accident at the bridge [Macedon Street] or at Station Street and Sunbury is in gridlock,” Mr O’Farrell said. He said the lack of a third crossing was also a concern in emergency situations. Mr Finn called on Transport Minister Jacinta Allan to consider a sky road in Sunbury as an alternative to building another level crossing which he said would end up exacerbating existing traffic problems. “It is time we stopped talking about it and actually did something. It’s way past time

that we did something because the people of Sunbury deserve that third crossing of the railway line,” Mr Finn said. The minister’s office was contacted, but did not respond to Star Weekly’s inquiries by deadline. The state government has already started removing 37 dangerous and congested railway level crossings around the state. “This is one of the biggest building programs in Australian history, being delivered well ahead of schedule and creating thousands of jobs across Victoria,” Ms Allan said.

Candidates set for council poll The race is on in Hume and Macedon Ranges which have attracted big fields of candidates for next month’s council elections. There are 14 nominations for three vacancies in Hume’s Jacksons Creek ward this year – up from 10 candidates in 2012. Incumbents Jack Medcraft and Ann Potter will stand again while veteran councillor Jack Ogilvie stepped down after 26 years because of poor health. Current mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou (Meadow Valley) has also stepped down after

eight years on council, but her husband John Patsikatheodorou has nominated to stand in Jacksons Creek. Juan Rodriguez-Deller, Leanne Morgan, Wendy Walters, John Karagiannidis, Stephen Coughlan, Carmel Barrot, Hayley Quinn, Phillip Di Biase, Leigh Johnson and Trevor Dance have all nominated for Jacksons Creek. Twenty-seven candidates have nominated for nine vacancies on Macedon Ranges council – two fewer than last election. Standing for three vacancies in the East ward are Natasha Gayfer, Henry Bleeck, Nicole

Rowan, Bill West, William Bick, Deborah Alford-Kerr, Hilary Roberts, Geoffrey Neil and Damian Parolin. Incumbent east ward councillors Ian Ellis and mayor Graham Hackett are standing again while Henry McLaughlin is not. In south ward, John Amenta, Mandi Mees, Paul Hosking, Andrew Twaits, Helen Radnedge and Jamie Byron have nominated for three vacancies. South ward councillors John Letchford and Russell Mowatt are standing for re-election while Cr Sally Piper has stepped down.

Jailed for fatal crash A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to four years and four months in prison after a crime spree in Sunbury and Macedon that ended in tragedy. Jayden Galea was found guilty in June of dangerous driving causing death and pleaded guilty to additional charges of theft of a motor vehicle, failure to assist after an accident, theft of a Myki coin cassette, and criminal damage. Galea was sentenced in the Melbourne County Court last month. He will be eligible for parole in two and a half years.

You’re never too old to learn a new skill … that’s the message from Macedon Ranges resident Trish McNamara. Ms McNamara took up cycling lessons through the Woodend Neighbourhood House a year ago, hoping to master the skill before her 65th birthday earlier this year. The ‘House’ offers a range of courses and workshops for people wanting to learn something new. Ms McNamara says she had neither ridden nor owned a bike as a child and wanted to learn to cycle confidently. She spent eight months venturing out on weekly rides with a House group so she could achieve her goal of cycling to Hanging Rock to celebrate her 65th birthday. She completed the 23.5-kilometre ride and continues to cycle with the group, which can be contacted at www.woodendnh.org.au or on 5427 1845. Esther Lauaki

In the peak-of-spring flush that brings the best of Mount Macedon’s available properties on to the market, Sefton is undoubtedly this season’s star attraction. And with a price that will potentially make it one of the mountain’s priciest properties, it would want to be. With 20 bedrooms – admittedly housed in three buildings on the 8.8 hectares of botanic garden-like grounds – the 1907 heritage-listed spread could possibly qualify as the top trophy property in the old hill station redoubt where Melbourne’s 19th-century wealthy folk went to cool off through summer. If not for the distant backdrop of eucalypt-covered ridges, Sefton could transport you to the realms of great English country house estates. It has daffodils, early blossoms, a nine-hole golf course, a backyard tennis court, croquet lawn and kitchen gardens. Certainly, once behind that tall hedge, and having crunched quietly over gravel on the winding drive and past neck-stretching 100-year-old beeches, maples, oaks, cedars and the odd California redwood, visiting Sefton vividly recalls a more gracious time. The weatherboard and multiple-gabled main house, a beautifully proportioned and craftsman-detailed Edwardian weekender, was built by a Baillieu. Specifically, by William Lawrence (1859-1936), of the first Australian-born generation of that influential dynasty. By 1901 he was a politician in the Victorian Legislative Council. His main house was in Camberwell, but early in the 20th century and taking up a site once occupied by Mount Macedon’s original guest house, he commissioned architectural

firm Sydney Smith and Ogg to design a retreat on a flattened hill in what is now known as “the Golden Mile” of Mount Macedon Road. The house was passed down through the Baillieu family, to Lord (Clive) Baillieu of Sefton, and in the early 1980s (and under the auctioneer’s hammer of Baillieu Allard), it went out of private hands when it sold to Elders IXL, with John Elliott and his executives using it as a country getaway and conference centre. In 2005, it was sold on for $8.17 million to the

Students at New Gisborne Primary School are a step closer to newer, better facilities with work now under way on a $772,000 redevelopment. The construction will include a replacement of the school’s art room, which was destroyed by fire in 2011. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said it was her goal to see the redevelopment come to fruition after it was passed over in the 2011 budget. “Our kids can’t get a first-rate education in second-rate classrooms,” she said. “This new art room will ensure staff and students at New Gisborne Primary School have the facilities they deserve.” “A high-quality education system must be matched by high-quality learning environments where students are engaged, stimulated and encouraged to be creative thinkers. “I look forward to seeing this upgrade completed.” There are now 42 new government schools and hundreds of school upgrades in the construction pipeline following the state government’s $1.8 billion investment in school infrastructure. “This school building boom will create 4000 construction jobs and ensure all Victorian families have access to a great school no matter where they live,” Ms Thomas said. Hit the spring-clean trail Gisborne resident Kate De Marco has signed up for the Garage Sale Trail along with thousands of residents eager to clear out their clutter for spring. The national Garage Sale Trail, now in its sixth year, encourages people to participate in one big day of garage sales on Saturday, October 22. Hume and Macedon Ranges councils are among 150 councils that participate by encouraging recycling, sustainable living practices and waste minimisation. Ms De Marco says she’s selling her excess stuff so she can fund a vegetable garden and some chooks in an effort to become more self-sufficient.

“I’m a single mum on a low income who is living in Gisborne, so I could use the extra cash,” she said. “I love a good garage sale – I’ve done them for years on the Garage Sale Trail and I just love participating in a community initiative. “Because I only moved to the area eight months ago, it’s an opportunity for me to meet more of my neighbours and have a chat.” Ms De Marco says she and her four-year-old son, Zaimeri, will be selling home-made cordial and cakes as well as other “crazy bits and bobs”. ‘Fire-ready’ burn-offs approved By Esther Lauaki Burning-off restrictions have been lifted for land parcels below 4000 square metres in the Macedon Ranges to assist residents in getting fire ready. Macedon Ranges council, in consultation with local CFA brigades, will allow burning-off on smaller blocks during October. Acting assets and operations director Shane Power said residents must ensure they didn’t create a nuisance for neighbours and should continue to monitor burn-offs for at least seven days to ensure they were fully extinguished.

Mr Power said council was urging residents to monitor weather conditions before starting any burning-off on their properties. Residents were preparing their properties for the warmer season by removing fuel such as long grass, weeds, twigs and leaves, he said. Large loads of green waste, excluding noxious weeds, can be dumped for free at the council’s transfer stations until December 31. “Significant rain in recent weeks and warmer weather conditions will result in a green landscape across the shire,” Mr Power said. “But this doesn’t mean that we can

become complacent about the fire risk during summer. With nearly 1700 kilometres of council-managed roads in the shire, we must prioritise our roadside slashing programs to target high-traffic roads near grasslands and township boundaries. “We are planning to initially focus on areas in the north of the shire that are known to dry

out the quickest and we will monitor regrowth carefully over the fire season.” Council’s fire management officer will begin inspecting private properties for fire risk in mid-October. The Macedon Ranges, Cobaw and Wombat state forests remain among the highest bushfire risk locations in Victoria, Gisborne CFA captain Sam Strang said. “It only takes a few really hot days to dry anything out and then we’re at risk of a bushfire any moment,” he said. A toolbox for wellbeing Returned soldiers are finding inspiration through a new book on “life’s little emergencies”. Sunbury author Judith Te Huia’s latest book, The Toolbox for Life’s Little Emergencies, was launched this month. Ms Te Huia’s aim was to help anyone struggling with mental health issues. “I’m a registered nurse, coach, counsellor and mental wellbeing specialist and have helped many people find a healthier and happier way to live,” she says. “Our aim is to get as many of the books as possible to those in need without the sufferer having to find the funds [for professional counselling] on top of their other worries. “This book is an introduction to the tools you can learn to use to help you react differently, to connect with the problems and gain different solutions. It’s about taking you on a journey of

self-care to find your own inner help, wisdom and peace through meditation, relaxation techniques, changing your thoughts, using visualisation, taking care of self and not feeling guilty.” She says the book is already having excellent results for returned soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and others struggling with loss, grief and postnatal depression. “We have already had some wonderful feedback from those who have read it saying it’s simple to read and the exercises are easy to follow,” Ms Te Huia says. “They can take the book with them and refer to the page they need at the time they need it.” Esther Lauaki Judith Te Huia with copies of her book The Toolbox for Life’s Little Emergencies. He was charged with theft, assault, resisting arrest, possessing a prohibited weapon, possessing graffiti implements and handling stolen goods. News of a new emergency services training centre for Mount Macedon has been welcomed by Macedon Ranges council. The new Victorian Emergency Management Institute will be located at the site of the former Australian Emergency Management Institute, which was closed in 2014. Chief executive Peter Johnston said the council had worked with the state government to plan the institute, which, from the first half of next year, would boost local jobs and the economy. Woodend bus service rolls out By Esther Lauaki Woodend’s new bus service will hit the streets next week. Flexiride buses will finally be rolled out from Monday (October 3) following a long-running campaign by residents for better public transport in the town. Public Transport Victoria consulted the Woodend community earlier this year about the operation, costs and schedule of the service. The service joins those established in Kyneton and Gisborne several years ago.

Woodend resident and bus campaigner Betty Barned, 86, said she was thrilled about using the new service. “I’ve been campaigning for the last three years and had all but given up hoping for a bus service for Woodend,” Mrs Barned said. “I stopped driving after a crash two years ago and I have a carer from the council that picks me up and takes me shopping once a week. “It will be marvelous when the new flexiride service comes in because I won’t have to get half-price taxi fares for my medical appointments. I’ll have more independence.”

Terry takes time out Macedon Ranges’ ultimate blokey backyard is no longer open to the public, but money raised by its owner, Terry Moore, will have a lasting impact in the community. Mr Moore invited people to explore Teldorado earlier this month and raised nearly $3000 for the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group in the process. He first opened his Drummond North property to the public in 2013 and has since raised more than $10,000 towards improving mental health care in Macedon Ranges and Hepburn shires. “I am happy to report that Teldorado Open Gardens is proud to donate $2724.33 to the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group,” said Mr Moore of his latest fundraising effort. He said this year’s event would be his final fundraiser so he could focus on his own health issues.

“I have chosen to finish on a high and it’s time that I started putting myself first,” Mr Moore said. “I have had great support from Hepburn and Macedon Ranges councils, for which I will always be grateful. “Mental health is not just my issue – it is an ongoing issue … that is a responsibility of every person who lives in our community. “I will continue to support mental health, but maybe in another way – possibly advocacy down the track. “Thank you, to all who visited Teldorado and I hope that you have taken some ideas for your own bloke’s backyard! All your generosity has made this a wonderful healing process for me.” Esther Lauaki Terry Moore in his Macedon Ranges “blokey backyard”, Teldorado. (Shawn Smits)

Macedon state Labor MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the buses would provide a “demand-response service”. “It will essentially be like a maxi-taxi with residents able to potentially ring up and book the bus to pick them up,” Ms Thomas said. “I’m so excited to be delivering on this Andrews government election commitment. “Not long now until this funky looking vehicle hits the streets of Woodend. “The bus is currently getting its wheels polished and a wheelchair lift fitted – but it will be ready for its first day of work on Monday.”

Ms Thomas wants Public Transport Victoria to look into adding a service from Romsey/ Lancefield to link with V/Line at Clarkefield and Sunbury. She said an investigation should be conducted on linking a bus to the newly-added V/Line service leaving Clarkefield at 8.22am on week days. The Woodend cash-only service costs $2.40 for a two-hour full-fare ticket or $1.20 for concession. A daily ticket costs $4.80 full fare and $2.40 concession. Call 5422 1634 to book.

MY PLACE Gisborne

This month we celebrate the following staff members who completed 12 months of service.

Stephen Ryan has been smitten with the world of plants since he was a boy. The greenthumbed former television gardening personality spoke with Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection to the Macedon Ranges? My dad built a holiday shack on a block of ground he bought near the top of the ‘mount’ in 1959 and we moved in due to the 1960s credit squeeze as we got more for the Melbourne house than we would ever have got for dad’s Jerry built shack. We had an outside dunny built from a packing case and the only heating we had in our first cold winter was a tiny briquette heater that took four briquettes.

How long have you lived/worked in the area? I tell everyone that we were the only people ever forced to live here! I started primary school at Mt Macedon in 1960. Why do you love gardening so much? In 1965 dad started a plant nursery at our home with his usual great timing as we had a very bad drought in 1966. At the age of 10 I started working in the nursery after school and at weekends, a willing slave I have to say as I was immediately smitten by the world of plants. I think the main reason I love gardening is that I know that there is always something more to learn. I can’t imagine knowing

everything there was to know about a given topic, how boring! Tell me about your work with the Mt Macedon Horticultural Society. How did you become involved? I joined the Mt Macedon and district Horticultural Society with dad when I was 10 and at the age of 19 I was president. Apart from 18 months early in my career I have been president ever since, some 40 or so years. Surely this is close to a Guinness Book of Records record!

People may recognise you from the television or have listened to you on the radio. What do you get asked the most about in your line of work? Apart from running my nursery Dicksonia Rare Plants since 1980 I’m well known for my years on radio and my three years as host of Gardening Australia on the ABC. The most often question I am asked is: “Why aren’t I still on telly? It wasn’t my choice I have to say. What’s something that the community doesn’t know about you?

Most people would be surprised that I have an obsession with all things to do with bats (the flying kind) and collect anything I can with bats on it, which to date includes my cast iron door knocker, antique lithographs ‌ to name but a few. What do you love the most about Mt Macedon? I love the ‘Mount’ because it has a climate that allows me to grow lots of rare plants and the community is small enough that we all seem to know each other.

Star Weekly classifieds – effective, affordable, in print and online Peak Medical GPC clinic manager Ray Fontelera says the Hoppers Crossing general practice’s use of classified advertising in Wyndham Star Weekly – print and online editions – has been “fantastic. Like many people who want to directly connect their goods or services with their local customers, Ray realised the most focused way of doing that was through the local newspaper, especially as these days all advertising appears online as well as in print – for one fee. Classified advertising in any one of 31 publications across Melbourne is a super-easy process and can be done online, or through all mobile devices, at any time. Using the self-serve system, people who sell goods, promote trade and professional services or place notices are able to edit and preview ads before they’re published – ensuring the finished product is exactly what they want. It’s an easy process to upload photos or logos and to organise the addition of extra weeks in print or online. And there’s a choice of packages to suit needs. By Esther Lauaki Kyneton residents are continuing to push for more consultation on the town’s airfield masterplan because they don’t believe there’s enough support to warrant the field’s expansion. A proliferation of privately owned hangars has been a point of contention in recent years with a public backlash over the council’s expansion plans, the noise associated with the airfield’s growth and plans for a night landing strip. The airport is beside the Kyneton Metcalfe Road, which runs parallel to the Calder

Freeway on the town’s northern fringe. Macedon Ranges council agreed at its August meeting that it would use the masterplan as a basis for further studies. But Kyneton resident Greg O’Brien and lobbyists from the ‘Kyneton Airstrip. Say No’ Facebook group are also calling for tighter regulations on the airspace. “How can they expand it?” Mr O’Brien said. “That airfield could be there for 100 years, a long time for local residents to put up with the increased noise and air pollution. “They say, ‘we’ve got a lot of support’, but where does that support come from? All we

hear are calls for the plan to be abandoned. A post on Facebook said: “[Pilots] can come up from Melbourne and fly over our homes all day if they want to, in unrestricted, unregulated airspace.” Council planning director Sophie Segafredo said the council was still in discussions with the Country Fire Authority about its future use of the airfield to assist in emergencies. Noise forecasting and an operation plan will need to be taken into account before the masterplan can be officially adopted by council. The draft masterplan is at www.mrsc.vic.gov. au/kynetonairfield

Thailand with children? Here’s some tips… To Phuket or not to Phuket? That is the question. Especially when travelling with children. More than half a million Australians visit Thailand each year. At any one time, tens of thousands of us will be on the holiday island. Hubby and I have been visiting for years, and the welcoming friendliness of the locals is a large reason why we keep going back. We tear

along Kata Beach on jet skis, take snorkelling trips to Koh Phi Phi; and – yes – escape the clutches of timeshare touts in Patong. Now the kids are 10 and 11, we’re concerned about the sights they see. Last year, I explained to Taj the signs for “ping-pong” shows on Bangla Road weren’t referring to table tennis. Hey, we’re pretty open-minded, but sex tourism isn’t a subject at

school. Dangers also lurk outside the red light district. According to the government’s Smart Traveller website, tourists should exercise a high degree of caution, for a variety of reasons. There’s the threat of terrorist attack after explosive devices were detonated in tourist spots, including Patong Beach, in August. The frequent demonstrations against the

2014 military coup can also become volatile. Then, there’s the jet-ski scam. “Many travellers have reported that, after returning hired jet-skis, they have been confronted by gangs claiming that the tourist damaged the jet-ski,” smartraveller.gov.au says. “There have been reported instances of such gangs threatening violence, including at knifepoint, if a large sum of money in compensation for the

alleged damage is not paid.” Beware the same scam when hiring motorbikes. And, please, buy or rent helmets for the children: You’re more than six times more likely to die in a traffic-related accident in Thailand than Australia. While several beaches are beautiful – such as the northern end of Karon – most are polluted (try not to ingest too much water). And avoid the ubiquitous fish spas: infection can spread through open wounds. Still, Thailand remains the Land of Smiles, with friendly locals, delicious food, and cheap accommodation. With all this in mind, here are my top five tips for a safe family holiday in Phuket. • Stay away from Bangla Road. The onus is on patrons, not venues, to ensure safety. At any time of day or night, things can go pear-shaped. Don’t put your kids at risk. • Find accommodation around Karon or Mai Khao Beaches. The former is good for tweens or teens, the latter for small children. (Our picks, in these places, are the Centara Grand and the Holiday Inn, respectively.) • Check the height of balconies at your hotel before booking. They’re usually lower than the Australian standard, which can be dicey for little ones. • Inspect jet skis and motorbikes before renting them. Look underneath to see if there’s any damage. Buy or bring your own helmets for bike riding. • Tell the children to hold on tightly to their bags and backpacks. Snatch-and-grabs are common. Sure, take the family to Phuket. The high season runs from November to February, or March is an excellent shoulder option. But also remember to take arms against a sea of troubles. tracey.spicer@fairfaxmedia.com.au Clockwise from top: Patong, Phuket; traditional longtail boat floating on the turquoise coloured waters of Thailand; Young girl in the Land of Smiles. A little bit country, a little bit pizzazz, this handsome abode sits on about 4.04 hectares that takes in views of the Mount, and has two huge Clearspan sheds, a shelter for a horse, established gardens and lots of open space. The house has four good-sized bedrooms, two with access to a north-facing verandah – including the main, which has a big walk-in wardrobe and spacious en suite. The new sleek main bathroom has a freestanding tub and attractive tiling. Floorboards anchor the living hub, which has a wood heater and split-system; and the lovely modern-country kitchen has a stack of white cabinetry, blackwood benches (including a moveable island) and all the shiny mod-cons. A horseshoe driveway, double carport, single garage, and town and tank water are other features.

A superb property of about 16.18 hectares, Fenton Park offers both lifestyle and income-earning potential. Infrastructure includes 10, 50x10-metre paddocks, five larger paddocks with shelters and electric fences, a round yard, stables, tack and feed rooms, cattle yards and a crush, and other sheds. Excellent water from bore and dam and recent pasture improvements are noteworthy. “TOO CLOSE TO HOME” For as long as I can remember, member there have been member, appeals to provide assistance for starving children overseas. These days, with wide screen television, the eyes of those beautiful but starving African children, do so tug at the heart strings - but wait, we have children in crisis all too close to home! There are children in Australia, in Victoria, in the Macedon Ranges, in Sunbury, in YOUR town who go to school without breakfast or lunch. Children who go home to one or both parents who have succumbed to the most dreadful of ailments - an addiction to ICE!! We are facing a situation all too close to home of families at risk, children in crisis! How many of you know of grandparents who have given up their retirement to provide a safe and loving home for their grandchildren because of Ice? How many of you worry about children wandering the streets, children who seem to be without direction or guidance, children who, perhaps cannot go home because of addiction and the resulting violence and neglect. We must become a much stronger Nation in order to protect our most valuable asset - our children.

This terrific property is on about 5.22 hectares that rises to the summit of Mt Gisborne – hence its name, ‘Summit Place’. This is a pristine place where pure-bred Romsey Marsh Coloured sheep wander the slopes and flats of five well-fenced paddocks. And the views, particularly from the beautifully planted front lawn terrace, are really something special. The sparka-larkling homestead, with front and back verandahs, has three bedrooms

– two up one end, opposite a study, the all-white main bathroom, separate toilet and the laundry. At the opposite end, the beige-carpeted main bedroom has wardrobes behind six doors, and an all-white en suite with dual basins, big shower and heat lamp. All rooms along the front have fab views, including a carpeted lounge-dining room with bay window, and the next-door, slate-tiled family-meals room with ceiling

fan, split-system and wood heater. The kitchen has soft-close blackwood joinery, soft-grey laminate benchtops, a dishwasher, wall oven and 900mm gas cooktop. The gardens, with many rockand sleeper-edged pathways, are explore-worthy, with the copse of weeping cherries a standout. Summit Place was once a protea farm, and many remain on a cleared area of about 1.7 hectares. Two pretty dams are stocked with yabbies

SPORT Hawks looks to the future with enthusiasm Woodend-Hesket is primed to build on the foundations it has established in the Riddell District Netball League this year. The Hawks made massive improvements on and off the court this season, but they know there is plenty of work to be done in terms of establishing a strong netball program. Netball co-ordinator Kellie Duff said that while this year’s result thrilled all involved, there was no thought about the place of sitting on hands. “We worked on so many things – structure, policies and culture,” she said. “We got a new court and we’re optimistic for the future. The pathways we are creating and the relationship between the seniors and juniors should be around for a long time.

“Just speaking to people around the league, they’ve seen so many improvements on and off the court that we’ve made and everyone is really positive.” Duff said a priority was the appointment of A-grade head coach. They club is also advertising all other coaching roles. Duff said with herself being appointed to the co-ordinator role so late in the process, the club was unable to find someone to take on the coaching role in the previous season. “It was a little too late to get a senior coach,” she said. “By default, it meant I coached the As and Bs. I was already coaching four junior sides so I was way busier than I intended.” The Hawks’ A-grade team finished ninth, with three wins for the season.

It was a young line up, with several players getting their first opportunities in the top side. Brittany Bowen and Georgia Fearn played in both the A-grade and under-19 sides. “Everyone wanted to play with each other regardless of the results,” Duff said. “We couldn’t have done it without some of our past players coming back and playing in C grade. Duff said that while the club would like the team to remain mostly made up of local players, it will look outside the area for some much-needed height. “Getting a couple of tall players would be fantastic and make things a bit easier and help with structures,” she said. “Even a couple of players coming with a coach to help us out

will help us compete against the middle-rung teams.” One of the biggest thrills for the club this season came through the achievements of its under-19 team, which made the finals for a second successive year. “It’s the first time any of our teams have made it through to the second week of the finals,” Duff said. “We’re developing young players,” she said. “We’ve got a bright future and it’s fantastic to see what they’ve achieved.” Anyone interested in coaching at Woodend-Hesket can contact Kellie on 0419 535 062 or at dktduff@hotmail.com Tara Murray

Sharks bask in success By Tara Murray After Rupertswood went through the inaugural Riddell District Netball League under-19 season undefeated in 2014, club head coach Di McCormack didn’t think she would be able to field another under-19 side of the same strength. With most of those girls moving into the B-grade and C-grade sides, McCormack and under-19s coach Katie Clarke had a new bunch of young girls to work with last year. This year they entered the season with an even younger side – and with what McCormack thought was the weakest squad of the three. The result? Another undefeated year and a third premiership. The Sharks’ under-19 winning streak sits at 57 games. McCormack said the success of the under-19 side was a superb outcome. “I thought the calibre of the first year was

a one-off,” she said. “I didn’t think we would repeat it.” McCormack said that in each year they wanted to promote younger girls into the more senior sides, which meant looking at new under-19 line-ups. It meant many of the girls playing under-19s could still be playing at under-17 or even under-15 levels. “We’ve got a lot of talented girls who keep coming through under-19s and winning,” McCormack said. “They wanted to be challenged and we’re always pushing them up and giving them opportunities. “It’s part of the reason we have a strong A-grade team. We’re trying to give some of these girls a taste of A grade. “The next two or three years, we’ll be putting out an A-grade team made up of these girls.” Only two players have played in more

than one of the under-19 premiership – Lara Keating and Danielle Scardamaglia. They also played in B grade and C grade respectively this season, but helped the under-19 team late in the year after injuries and unavailability became an issue. Georgia Hellyer would have been a third Shark to play in two under-19 premierships but was away for this year’s grand final. Two other teams have won three Riddell District Football Netball League premierships in the same period – the Sharks’ B-grade netballers and the club’s under-18.5 footballers. The B-grade netball team has lost a single match in each of the past three years on the way to three premierships. The under-18.5s football team has lost one match in the past three years. In the four years the club has been in the RDFL, the under-18.5 Sharks have won three premierships, been runners-up once and have lost just two games by a total of five points.

A new leadership team is hoping to ensure the women’s side at Gisborne Cricket Club continues to prosper. Husband-and-wife team Jodie and Tim Bannan have taken over the running of the women’s side ahead of the CV Women’s Community Cricket season. Jodie has taken on the role of women’s co-ordinator, while Tim will coach the side. Jodie said that the while the side had continued to have success on field, much of its running had been left to the players. The Dragons, the only women’s side in the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury area, made the grand final in both the T20 and one-day shield competitions last season. “We saw an opportunity to put our hands up,” Jodie said. “We hope we can help them get back up and running to their full potential again.” Jodie said they wanted to ensure the club was in a strong position as female participation in cricket grows. While Jodie, who is also the club’s secretary, is reasonably new to the sport, Tim has been heavily involved. He has coached at Werribee and been involved with the Dragons’ juniors program as co-ordinator and coach. Jodie said that with their own children coming through as players, they wanted to make sure there was somewhere for them to play in the future. “We’re looking to rebuild,” said Jodie of the Gisborne senior women’s side. “We’ve probably got about four girls coming back and four are out due to babies and injuries. There’s possibly someone from Bacchus Marsh and maybe one from Romsey coming to play. In a boost for female cricket in the area, the Gisborne and District Cricket Association has received funding from Cricket Australia to introduce an all-girls junior competition for the upcoming season. To be played on Thursday nights at Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve, the competition is for girls aged 10-14. Teams will usually be selected on the night, while some club’s with greater number of girls will look to field their own teams in the T20 fixtures. Golden hands steer Jets to a perfect Big V finale After a perfect season, the Big V honours flowed for Sunbury Jets’ women’s side at the league’s awards night. The Jets completed one of the most dominating seasons on record, and it was no surprise they featured in nominations and awards. Having won the golden hands award for the best defender in women’s division 1 on the stats, Chelsea Burns also won the best defensive player for that division. Burns averaged 6.6 rebounds, 3.5 steals and one block per game, along with 7.4 points per game. In his first season as coach, Kennedy Kereama was named division 1 women’s coach of the year. Jets’ guard Monique Stevens was also nominated for the best defensive player award. While she missed out on that one, she was named in the division 1 all-star five team.

Courtney Duever, who averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds per game, just missed out and was named the sixth best player. Emma Mahady was also up for the team, and most valuable player award. The MVP award was won by Mildura’s Alli Gloyd. Kereama said the awards cap off what was a history-making season. “We don’t seek goals or individual accolades at the start of the year,” he said. “I guess that is the icing of the cake – [on] what [was] a brilliant season for us. “It’s a team award, I’m just the guy who gets to take the trophy home at the end of the night. “I really appreciated the amount of work that the players and club put in, to put me in a position to win an award like that.” It wasn’t just the Jets’ women’s side in the awards.

Ish Sanders was named in the division 1 men’s all-star 5, while Emily Angove was in the youth league women’s division 2 team of the year. Both missed the MVP for those divisions,

Dragons keen for more By Tara Murray Gisborne is primed for a tilt at a second straight Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup premiership. The Dragons took out last season’s premiership in dramatic circumstances after the grand final against Diggers Rest Bulla finished in a tie. The Dragons, who defeated the Burras in the final round of the season, were awarded the premiership because they finished higher on the ladder. Dragons coach Simon Harman said the players were motivated for more success and had put in a really positive pre-season. As well as tasting GDCA premiership success last season, the Dragons came within a win of playing on the MCG in the state T20 competition. Their C-grade side also won the GDCA premiership. “It’s been a shortened pre-season, but we’ve had really good numbers and people are motivated,” Harman said. Harman said the club had retained most of last year’s premiership side, with Daniel Trevillian, who has retired, and Eamon McKenna, who is travelling, the only players missing. Englishman Tahir Afridi, who was named in the Central Highlands Region Team of the Year, is back for another season. The Dragons have added former players Jakson Knight and Jason Williams to the playing list for the coming season. “Jakson was in our 2009 grand final team as a 14-year-old,” Harman said. “He has played a lot of cricket and has been playing overseas. “Jason moved to the country [Gippsland], but has moved back to the area.” The club has also signed former Sunbury United coach Jeremy Newman, who will also act as a development coach. Newman was previously involved with Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association club Melton Lions. Harman said the signing of Newman showed the club was looking at ways to continuously improve. “It felt like coaching wasn’t just a one-man job,” he said. “We wanted to get someone else on board to give everyone in the club the best coaching.” He said young guys such as Aidan Beard, Riley Vernon and Roby Lane – who were around the edges of the team last year – would get more opportunities to play at senior level. The Dragons start their season against Bacchus Marsh on October 8 in a one-day clash at Maddingley Park. In other GDCA news, Tylden, which won the E-grade premiership last season, will not field a side this season due to the loss and retirement of players. The club was due to play in the club grade south competition.

Thunder coach voted best in the EDFL East Sunbury’s Steve Grey has been named coach of the year at the Essendon District Football League. Grey was rewarded at the league’s best and fairest night on Saturday, named the best coach from across all the senior grades for his work in developing the young Thunder line-up. The Thunder, which finished bottom of the ladder with one win the season before Grey took over, this year won seven games and finished sixth. Grey has already signed on to coach the club for next season. Thunder under-18.5 coach Darrell Cartwright finished third in the coach of the year award. The under-18.5s finished on top of the ladder undefeated before going out in the finals in straight sets. The Thunder’s Tom Cree, who made his senior debut this season, won the under-18.5 best-and-fairest award by six votes. Cree finished on 33 votes, six clear of Moonee Valley’s Ben Fisher. Division-leading goal-kicker Jaxon Mobilio finished equal fourth on 12 votes. In the division 2 reserves, Thunder veteran Alex Tomsic finished fourth, eight votes behind Jacana’s Trent Semmens. It came down to the final round in the division 2 senior best and fairest, with the Thunder’s Kamen Ogilvie narrowly missing out on the top award. Moonee Valley’s Ned Wilson polled three votes in the final round to overtake Ogilvie. Wilson finished on 27 votes, one vote clear of Ogilvie. Ogilvie finished fifth in the same award last year. For the first time, Ogilvie was named in the division 2 team of the year. He was the only Thunder player selected, named on the half-back flank. In other awards, Hillside brothers James and Victor Micallef shared the W. Hutchinson Medal. The two couldn’t be split in division 1 best and fairest, finishing on 16 votes a piece. Craigieburn forward Cameron Cloke finished third for a second straight year, two votes further back. In premier division, Aberfeldie’s Luke Blackwell won the R.S Reynolds Medal, one vote clear of Pascoe Vale’s Luke Foster. Blackwell finished on 22 votes. Last season he received just four.
