Sunbury set to sprawl New plans out for a Sunbury of the future have sparked the wrath of residents still waiting for critical infrastructure to support the town’s already burgeoning growth. The recently released Sunbury South and Lancefield Road precinct structure plans envisage four new town centres and 20,000 more homes in the next 50 years. The plans, prepared by the Victorian Planning Authority, are out for public comment, but the backlash has already been felt as far as Spring Street where local MP Bernie Finn vented his anger in Parliament earlier this month. His comments reflect those of Sunbury Residents’ Association president Bernie O’Farrell, who said locals are worried about the implications of the proposed expansion on the town’s existing traffic woes and its infrastructure shortfalls. “We have many issues, but at the top must be the current lack of infrastructure to support the current population,” Mr O’Farrell said. “Before we think about a dramatic increase in population, we need the Bulla bypass, the road from Jackson’s Hill to Vineyard Road, the multi-storey carpark and numerous other upgrades.” The ‘working names’ for the four new town centres are Yellow Gum, Emu Creek, Redstone Hill and Harpers Creek. The Sunbury South precinct plan covers about 1798 hectares bounded by Watsons Road and Jacksons Creek to the south, Gellies Road and Emu Creek to the north and north-east, a transmission line easement to the east and Vineyard Road to the west. The Lancefield Road precinct plan
applies to about 1095 hectares of land bounded by Racecourse Road and Jacksons Creek to the west, Gellies Road to the south, Emu Creek to the east, and a future conservation reserve to the north. The Victorian Planning Authority said Redstone Hill will be a major town centre, with the rest defined as local centres. The Redstone Hill area is centred on the intersection of Sunbury-Bulla Road and Lancefield Road.

- Bernie O’Farrell Each precinct will include a mix of housing, light industrial, commercial and business zones, along with parks. Two employment hubs, seven primary schools, three secondary schools, shopping, entertainment facilities and community centres are also planned. Victorian Planning Authority chief executive Peter Seamer said the plans are designed to bring “an urban feel” to the region while maintaining Sunbury’s existing character. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said that “while it will take another 30 years for Sunbury to develop, we need long-term plans in place, which have input from the community.” The VPA will hold consultation sessions on the new precinct structure plans at Sunbury Bowling Club on Monday, December 5 and Thursday, December 8, 5-8pm. Sankey, ditto, in the scorebook The Sankey family made history when they stepped onto the cricket field for Lancefield in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association the past two weekends. Playing in north grade against Macedon, five members from three generations of the Sankey family took to the field. While the result didn’t go the Tigers’ way, the match was special for all those involved. ■ Full story: Page 36

Gisborne cemetery needs to grow with the town Gisborne cemetery is filling up. Cemetery Trust members estimate there are only about 20 years left at the current Aitken Street site. So they have asked to expand onto a state-owned block of land next door, if the government will give it to them. Northern Victoria MP Wendy Lovell has called on the government to support the trust and enable it to continue to service the needs of the Gisborne community. She said, if adjoining land is able to be used
for the cemetery, the expanded site would be able to serve the town for at least another 75 years. “The trust is not in a position to purchase the land … but is instead requesting that the government gift the land.” The land was originally gifted to the education department in the early 1900s, but has since been deemed surplus to requirements, a spokeswoman for Health Minister Jill Hennessy told Star Weekly. The health and human services department
oversees Victoria’s volunteer cemetery trusts. The spokeswoman said councils, cemetery trusts and other departments have a first right of refusal to purchase surplus land. She said that the government’s cemeteries strategic working group, co-ordinated by the health and human services department, will oversee development of a statewide strategic plan. As part of this there will be extensive consultation with industry bodies and community groups on proposals to purchase land for cemeteries.

Sunbury GLC ready to go Sunbury’s multi-million dollar new library and learning hub in Macedon Street will get under way next year. The long-awaited project has been kickstarted by a $3 million grant from the state government’s Growing Suburbs fund. Hume mayor Drew Jessop said the grant was a significant boost for the Global Learning Centre (GLC) project. “Hume council is committed to achieving the very best for the Sunbury community, and providing first-class library and learning facilities,” Cr Jessop said. Sunbury’s GLC will incorporate a modern library, with state-of-the-art digital resources and exhibition spaces. Cr Jessop said the project means thousands of locals will soon have easier access to formal and informal learning. “Sunbury’s Hume Global Learning Centre is set to open new doors for the huge number of families that call the beautiful area of Sunbury home,” Cr Jessop said. “It will allow people to learn throughout their lives – whether they’re a young child fascinated by dinosaurs, a mum who wants to change careers or a grandfather who is keen to master social media.” The centre will also include classrooms and common spaces for students of Hume Multiversity. It will offer hi-tech communication and presentation capacity for exhibitions, seminars and conferences, meetings and training. The Sunbury GLC will be the third such hub in Hume, with other GLCs located at Craigieburn and Broadmeadows. It is due to open early 2019. Esther Lauaki

Residents living near Emu Bottom homestead and wetlands reserve say they feel caged in by partial road closures they fear will put them at risk this fire season. Parts of Racecourse Road have been limited to one lane since May as part of works on Sunbury’s Elizabeth Drive extension. But resident Juliette O’Kelly said there has been no action until recently, when construction started on a roundabout, to ease traffic at Villawood’s new Sunbury Fields estate. The road works will eventually underpin significant development outlined last week in the Lancefield Road precinct structure plan, which includes a proposal for an extra 400 homes off Racecourse Road. Ms O’Kelly said the partial closure of Racecourse Road is residents’ biggest concern at this stage. “Many residents were affected by the Christmas day fire last year, and are understandably anxious,” she said. “Many residents who have implored the council to ensure the road is fully open during the fire season have been ignored. “The needs of the developer seem to supersede the requirements the residents have for a safe evacuation route.” Ms O’Kelly said residents want Hume council to tell residents the proposed evacuation plan for the area with the closures in place. Hume council officer Emir Ameti wrote to Ms O’Kelly saying changes would be made in coming weeks to “ensure that response times are not unreasonably affected in an emergency”. “Council officers recently met with the County Fire Authority to discuss the partial road closure and how it could potentially impact CFA’s response times,” his letter stated. Changes include reducing the length of the closure, and providing an unsealed passing area for two-way traffic. He said the current partial closure will be lifted between December 24 and January 8, but roadworks will start again from January 9, to be finished by February 28. Residents will meet at the reserve on December 6 at 6pm. julietteokelly@gmail.com
She also said that, with nine cemeteries altogether in the Macedon Ranges, there’s enough burial capacity “for decades” yet. “Combined, these nine public cemeteries have capacity for more than 30,000 burials, which equates to about 80 to 100 years of burial capacity. “The travel time from Gisborne to any one of these other cemeteries is, on average, 30 minutes.”

Clinic permit heads to VCAT By Esther Lauaki Gisborne objectors have successfully convinced their new councillors to reject a permit to relocate a medical centre to another part of town. But it will be the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal that has the last say. Macedon Ranges councillors last week heard from some of the 10 objectors about why they oppose a new double-storey building to relocate the town’s existing Saint Mary medical centre in Hamilton Street to 51 Brantome Street. Brantome Street resident George Hryc cited
concerns about the impact of more traffic in the street, as well as the size of the building. “My property is directly next to the site,” Mr Hryc said. “This building would look completely out of character in a residential zone.” Another resident was also concerned about parking. “There are regular times now when it is very difficult to find a car space,” she said. “With two primary schools nearby, before and after school times are really busy.” Building designer Bill Jacobs said the vacant block in a residential zone had been chosen
due to the length of time it originally took for it to come before the council for a decision. The application was first lodged on July 6, but councillors were not briefed about the proposal until early October, just before the recent poll to elect the new council line-up and when outgoing councillors were in caretaker mode. “Processing planning applications takes time – sometimes the applicant is required to submit revised drawings and plans and other statutory bodies, such as VicRoads, need to be consulted,” a council spokeswoman said. The applicant filed his complaint with VCAT on November 4.
for its proximity to the commercial area (it is one house block away), but said he was not in a financial position to buy a property in the commercial zone. Council officers noted that Mr Jacobs’ team had made significant changes to its original design to make it more sympathetic to the country town character of Gisborne. Councillors Helen Radnedge, Andrew Twaits, Mandi Mees, Jennifer Anderson, Bill West and Natasha Gayfer voted to reject the permit. Council planning officers had recommended it be approved. But the application is already before VCAT
In tune with country Sunbury teacher Kelli Brogan says she feels like she’s “hit the big time” with the release of her debut country music album. The Killara Primary School performing arts teacher has been singing and gigging in Australia for nearly 20 years. “Music is something that I’ve done my whole life,” Brogan said. “I became a professional international ballroom dancer when I was 21 and so singing was put on the back burner. “There was a void in my life and life’s too short not to do what I want.” Brogan is no stranger to the limelight, having competed at three ballroom dancing world championships before retiring. Brogan describes her self-titled album, recorded at SCL Records, as a 12-month labour of love. Brogan wrote three of the album’s 10 tunes, with the remainder penned by producer Steve Lowry.

A man who donned camouflage gear and shot a kangaroo with a crossbow outside a family’s home has been jailed for animal cruelty. But James Calleja last week claimed media coverage of his case before the courts had “destroyed my life”, and told a magistrate he had skipped a court appearance because of stress and anxiety. Calleja, 34, from Sunbury, had his bail revoked last Friday and was on Wednesday jailed for three months after pleading guilty to aggravated cruelty to an animal, possessing a controlled weapon without excuse and trespass. After his sentence, he asked that the crossbow be returned to his brother, and asked magistrate Lance Martin if he could appeal. On August 12 last year, Calleja and his brother went onto Marcus Smith’s property at Ashbourne, near Woodend, wearing head-to-toe camouflage gear. Calleja fired a crossbow and hit an adult male eastern grey kangaroo, Melbourne Magistrates Court heard. The men could not catch the kangaroo, and left. The animal still had the crossbow bolt stuck in its head. It wasn’t until two weeks later that Wildlife Victoria volunteers managed to catch and tranquilise the injured animal and take it to the Lort Smith Animal Hospital. The kangaroo, known as Spot to Mr Smith’s family because of a tuft of white hair on its side, died two days after surgery to remove the bolt. Mr Smith said his young children had been traumatised seeing the Calleja brothers, and seeing Spot critically injured.
“They didn’t see the actual bolt being fired, but they pretty much saw everything else, including close-ups of when we first found Spot in our backyard with the bolt protruding from his head,” Mr Smith said. “We can’t undo that, we can’t take those images back, and our kids still ask us all sorts of awkward questions about killing and why people are bad and ‘are the bad men coming back to get us?’ “You can’t help but feel very, very angry and very upset over something that we had no control over.” Mr Martin said a combination of jail and a community corrections order would have been the best sentencing option, but found jail was the only option for the “serious” offending, because Calleja had refused to undergo a mental health assessment. Helen Round, a Wildlife Victoria volunteer who with her partner rescued Spot, was glad the court recognised how serious the offending was. But she was concerned the crossbow could be returned to Calleja’s brother, whose case was previously before the courts. “There’s no winners here,” Ms Round said. “Spot the kangaroo died a horrible death … and a family was traumatised.” Calleja last week told Mr Martin he had written an apology letter, but refused to allow a police prosecutor to see the note. Mr Smith said he had never seen any signs of remorse or regret, and had never heard Calleja apologise. The Age

Hair you go, says Charlee Charlee Baker has hair to spare for kids with cancer. The socially conscious 11-year-old from Sunbury Primary School decided this year that she would grow her long locks to her waist. She’ll be cutting her hair next Friday (December 9) and donating it to a charity that manufactures wigs for children with cancer. Her family and her very proud grandmother, Irene Moysey, will be there cheering her on. “Charlee is a very compassionate and free-spirited child,” Mrs Moysey says.
“She’s always wanting to help others, and she makes me a very proud nan.” Mrs Moysey says she was initially worried that her granddaughter would regret her decision. “For someone so young to decide to cut her hair is a big deal,” she says. “I asked her: ‘Are you sure you don’t want to keep your long hair?’ She said: ‘Nan, it will grow back’.” Esther Lauaki

‘Lost arts’ revived Gisborne artist Irene Perkins is hoping to make an “old-fashioned” hobby trendy again through an upcoming exhibition. Perkins has been painting china jugs, plates and other ceramic household items for 25 years, and will have a collection on display at the Phoenix Macedon Ranges Art and Craft group’s December 2 exhibition at Gisborne. She began working with ceramics when her husband’s ceramics factory was approached to make inserts for brass beds. “My husband was in the business all his life, and I just got dragged into it,” Perkins says. “I paint ornamental things, jugs and vases, but I try to make them useful.” She says she took to the craft easily and

It’s an old-fashioned hobby, but hopefully people will still appreciate the craft.” The free exhibition will also include wood craft, jewellery, glass art, paintings, paper craft and textile art for sale. Residents can get rid of old mattresses, couches, electronic goods, televisions, computers, fridges and washing machines at Hume Resource Recovery Centres in Sunbury and Campbellfield from 8am until 4pm. Residents are also entitled to either another home collection of up to three cubic metres of hard rubbish; or two visits to a Hume council waste facility to dispose of rubbish in a single-axle trailer, car boot, van, station wagon, 4WD or utility tray (ute); or one visit to a Hume council waste facility to dispose of a load of rubbish in a double-axle trailer.
Sunbury water main bursts
More than 2000 Sunbury residents were without water or had low water pressure as a result of a water main burst near the corner of Riddell Road and Elizabeth Drive on November 18. Repair work was complicated by the proximity of power lines. Western Water arranged alternative water supplies such as bottled water or tankers for schools, childcare centres and aged-care centres. Western Water says it will reimburse customers for bottled water purchased during the water outage.

Dog act threatens shows Proposed dog breeding reforms could spell the end of shows – including the popular Kyneton dog show – breeders are claiming. Amendments to the Domestic Animal Act are out for public comment and, if the legislation passes, home breeders will have to comply with commercial breeding rules, from which they were previously exempt. Dogs Victoria expressed strong opposition to the amendments, which aim to toughen dog breeding laws and target ‘puppy farms’, where hundreds of dogs are kept and thousands of puppies reared in sometimes overcrowded and squalid conditions. The reforms also aim to entice more families to adopt abandoned pets. Dogs Victoria president Wayne Fleming said the changes would mean the end to purebred dog breeders in Victoria and dog shows, such as the recent Kyneton Dog Show, hosted as part of the town’s agricultural show. “This one-size-fits-all legislation requires registered Dogs Victoria breeders with one fertile female to become a domestic animal business and comply with a code clearly designed for large-scale business operations, not those small-scale hobby breeders who want to raise their puppies in the home … and may only have a litter or two every few years,” Mr Fleming said. Municipal Association of Victoria interim president Coral Ross said councils have been inundated with calls from concerned breeders, shelters and residents asking what the proposed changes mean for them. Cr Ross said the state government has failed to consider that legislative reforms must take into account regulatory cost and workability. “Councils now find themselves staring down

the barrel of proposed law changes that are administratively complex and burdensome, and come with huge cost increases for breeders and pet owners,” she said. The government has advised councils they will need to review their fees in order to cover the costs of the proposed reforms, Cr Ross said.
“We are fearful the new puppy farm reforms will likewise impose significant additional costs and expectation on councils and communities, but will not achieve their intended purpose and instead lead to a proliferation of backyard breeders.” Information: www.purebreddogs.org.au

Own water vital to fire plans Macedon Ranges and Sunbury residents are being advised to have an independent water supply close at hand if they plan to stay and defend their homes this fire season. Western Water managing director Neil Brennan is warning residents it is vital they be prepared in an emergency. “If electricity is cut or water infrastructure is affected by fire, pumps and other equipment may fail, cutting the mains water supply,” Mr Brennan said. “If there is extremely high demand for water from customers and the CFA during a fire, water pressure may also drop.” Mr Brennan said residents should consult their local CFA about their options for independent water supplies. And plan ahead, he stressed. “We are already doing all we can to prepare for summer, with back-up generators ready and water storage tanks at high capacity to cope in case of fire,” he said. Residents can also help their communities be prepared for fire season by ‘adopting’ a fire hydrant. “Please keep any fire hydrants near your home free of debris and vegetation, and if you think a hydrant needs maintenance, call Western Water to report it,” Mr Brennan said. School bus route just the ticket By Esther Lauaki Goonawarra Primary School pupils finally have a bus service that will get them to and from school “safer and sooner”. key destinations will also benefit from more frequent services at school times on the new upgraded timetable for the bus network as part of the state government’s $100 million Better Bus Networks Program.
Sunbury MP Joshua Bull said this means parents can be sure their children have more ways to get safely to and from school. “We promised a bus service for Goonawarra Primary School and now we’re delivering, making it easier to get to school and back home again. “More buses, more often – these new and improved services will better connect our community and ensure students and staff at schools around Sunbury can get where they need to go safer and sooner.”
The upgraded routes include buses to Mt Lion, Moonee Ponds via Diggers Rest, Wilsons Lane, Rolling Meadows, Killara Heights, Jacksons Hill and Canterbury Hills. There will also be extra services on most routes on Saturday mornings. Public Transport Victoria consulted with local schools impacted by the new timetable to ensure the bus services met the needs of their students and staff. A fine idea to help out Sunbury library members who take advantage of an amnesty on overdue fines will also be helping a charity. Until December 16, Sunbury library and others across the municipality are giving members a chance to donate non-perishable food items to clear their overdue fines. The items will be donated to Anglicare Victoria to help Hume residents in need. For every non-perishable food item donated, Hume libraries will clear up to $10 of overdue fines. Mayor Drew Jessop said the amnesty was a fantastic opportunity to support families in need in the lead-up to Christmas. “We understand that members sometimes don’t return to our libraries because they want to avoid paying overdue fines,” he said. “We hope this amnesty will reconnect us with our library members and encourage them to use the exceptional free services and
resources that are available to them.” In order to clear overdue fines, members will need to return their library items in good condition and donate a non-perishable food item that is undamaged and not past its use-by date. The amnesty does not apply to fines related to lost or damaged items, or other charges such as printing and card replacement costs. Cr Jessop said residents without fines were also encouraged to make a donation at the city’s library branches. Details: humelibraries.vic.gov.au Laura Michell

Why the business of art matters

A program that supports the work of local artists needs community input to spread the word that “art matters”. Pop Up Art, in partnership with Macedon Ranges council, is calling on artists and art lovers to get involved in a social media campaign – #artmatters – to share why art matters to them and why it’s worth backing the program. Pop Up Art founder Sharon Seyd said the aim is to raise the profile of more than 200 central Victorian artists. “We’ve been working tirelessly over the last five years, in partnership with four local councils, to set up Pop Up Art – an arts enterprise model that supports central Victorian artists to sell more work,” Seyd said. “Our goal is to realise a collective arts enterprise that will take the work of artists out of the region to a much broader market, and eventually translate into art sales, globally. “There are opportunities for online art sales nationally and internationally, tapping into a global market last year reaching $63.8 billion.” Macedon Ranges council arts officer Robyn Till said the creative sector’s role in the economy is well documented, but not widely accepted. “For communities to derive the economic and social benefits from a robust local creative economy, we need to be very strategic in how we target investment and support” Ms Till said. “We want to ensure it’s accessible and affordable for professional artists, and financially sustainable in the long term.” Karen Corr, Make A Change Australia director, said the campaign promotes the need for direct investment in the arts – with focus on the people. Lovers of Gisborne Botanic Gardens can share ideas and aspirations for its future as work begins on a new five-year master plan. The original New Zealand-based theme for the gardens dates back to 1994, sparked by appreciation for support after the devastating 1983 bushfires offered by the people of Gisborne, New Zealand, to their ‘sister-city’ here. Council operations manager Shane Power said the review will ensure future projects in the Robertson Street gardens are included in the new master plan. It will also contain concept plans for new pathways, park furniture, signage, bollards, public art and planting. “A detailed schedule of works will be developed as part of the master plan, which will be an evolving document, providing for an annual review and maintenance of the gardens,” Mr Power said. “The master plan will aim to increase site visitation from horticultural enthusiasts, educational groups, tourists and the broader community. “Challenges to be discussed as part of the master planning process include our changing climate, increased pressure on our urban green spaces and limitations on water supply.” A drop-in session with master plan consultants will be held on Saturday, December 10, at the Gisborne administration centre, 11am-3pm. MY PLACE Peter ‘Patto’ Patterson was on a houseboat four years ago when he discovered a life-changing passion for art. He spoke to Esther Lauaki. I’ve lived in and around the Macedon Ranges my whole life. I was born in Sunbury, but then moved to Woodend, and finally settled in Riddells Creek 15 years ago. How did you become interested in art? It just became a part of my life’s journey. I’ve worked most of my life in construction, and the industry enabled me to travel all over Australia. Then I was on a houseboat on a lake in 2011 and my friend was drawing – that’s where I drew my first picture since I was a young kid. Before that moment, I never had a desire to be an artist. I was focused on my work and the business. When I was in school, my grades were not very good, but I did get credits for art. From there, my love for art just grew and grew. Do you still work in construction?
the art. I have a natural teaching ability, so I like to bring people in, and hopefully they can take something away from my experiences that might help them in some part of their lives. What are you working on at the moment? I’ve collected a lot of pieces of corrugated metal from an old shed that was destroyed when fire ripped through Riddells Creek a couple of years ago. I flattened them with a heavy roller and use them as canvases. I wanted to preserve these pieces in remembrance of that fire. They’ll eventually be included in my next show. Do you have any other interests? I’ve been restoring old motorcycles for a number of years. I have 28 of them, and would eventually like to turn a part of my home into a gallery to showcase the work I’ve done.
Yes, I run a business called Construction Training International, which helps people to get their heavy machinery licences. I’ve worked in rigging most of my career as a crane driver.
How would you like to progress your art?
What are you inspired by?
What is your favourite thing about the Macedon Ranges?
Everything around me. I’m inspired a lot by the Australian outback because I’ve travelled around there a lot, but I paint what I see and what I have seen before. I’m also inspired by people. I get as much enjoyment out of giving art away as I do creating
I’m just fascinated by the feedback that I get about my work, and that people would actually like to pay for my work.
Mount Macedon is one of my favourite places to paint. It’s so peaceful, and I find that I get a lot of inspiration. I often just pack up my paints and materials, one of the dogs on the back of my motorbike, and head up there.

Next to Quahlee Park and a leisurely stroll from shops, cafes and train station, Carramar is a botanical delight set on about 2545 square metres. The appealing house has an upper floor comprising three bedrooms with wardrobes, along with a separate toilet and bathroom. The downstairs main bedroom has a split-system, walk-in wardrobe and en suite. An entry foyer is flanked by a lounge room with gas log fire and floorboards. There’s also floorboards in the kitchen and a big family-meals room, the latter has dual access to a fab covered outdoor set-up with integrated pizza oven. The timeless kitchen’s electric appliances include a dual-drawer dishwasher. A detached office with split-system, a 5 x 6-metre shed with concrete floor and power, storage sheds, 2.7kW solar system, water tank and a double garage complete this leafy retreat.
Nailing the industrial-rustic deluxe design trend, this bespoke-built beauty – on about 2.2 hectares – rests on bluestone and brick foundations with a suspended concrete slab. The façade has a clever blend of red brick, rough-hewn bluestone, vertical timber cladding and corrugated iron. Inside, support posts reclaimed from Station Pier, oregon beams and steel joists couple with polished concrete, floorboards, and lots of glass (double-glazed on south side), which frame a spectacular garden and distant views. Three big bedrooms (main with walk-in wardrobe) share a stylish bathroom. The living hub, with a Nectre wood heater, is gorgeous, and there’s a sunroom. The superb kitchen has Miele and Indesit appliances, stone benches, Franke sink and fabulous cabinetry. A timber studio/workshop, trout-stocked dam and a wonderful viewing deck are among lots more goodies.

On 4.6 hectares of cleared land, this rustic log cabin with lots of timber used internally would make a fab weekender or permanent home – and there’s abundant room to expand or build a new dream abode, subject to council approval. Hobby farm infrastructure includes post-and-wire fencing, cattle holding yard and crush, and plenty of tank water. The cottage has three good-sized bedrooms, with built-in wardrobes, that share a bathroom and separate toilet. A large, L-shaped carpeted living room (with pitched ceiling and wood heater) adjoins the kitchen which has a breakfast bench, electric cooker and three-door pantry. A split-system takes care of seasonal comfort, while an elevated verandah is the spot to soak in the views. The double garage has an attached storage area. Perfect for livestock, the property is within an eight-minute drive of Gisborne’s centre.
A block back from the High Street shopping precinct, this residence on about 900 square metres has been tastefully revamped and is all ready for move-in day. Floorboards and a relaxing decor, contemporary lightfittings and renewed bathrooms and kitchen make it an appealing place for a family looking for a polished finish. Two bedrooms share a bathroom, while the main bedroom has a chic en suite, as stylish and sleek as the main bathroom. From this bedroom, french doors lead to the back deck. The large, light-filled living domain includes a beautifully updated kitchen with stone-topped island bench, lots of drawers and inset with electric cooktop under canopy rangehood. There’s a wall oven and dishwasher. Gardens are pretty, and there’s a double carport and a good-sized storage shed.

This parcel of about 40.47 hectares has been in the same family for 70 years or more, and it’s not surprising they wanted to hang onto it. Undulating, cleared land surrounding the appealing farmhouse is horse and cattle country, which takes in views of Mt William, Camels Hump and Macedon Ranges foothills. Farming and equine infrastructure is excellent: a 7.7 x 15.1-metre Colorbond shed with power and partial concrete floor; another huge shed (power and concrete) with set-up for three-plus stables, wash
bay and horse-float access; a lock-up tack room; electric-fenced paddocks; five dams, two of them spring-fed, and a bore; and three big water tanks. (Water supply, even in the worst drought, remains constant.) Designed by the owner, the classic farmhouse-style house, with deep wrap-around verandah, has a peaceful ambience, and light-filled rooms are well-presented. Entry is to a lounge-dining room with the charm of cream-painted dado boards beneath soft-green wall paint (the colour
palette throughout); it has cork floor tiles, a Clean Air wood heater, and glazed and french doors to side and back verandahs. The kitchen has abundant (cream) cabinetry, mottled-green granite-look benches, a Miele dishwasher, ceramic electric cooktop and wall/grill ovens. The large laundry/mudroom next-door has cupboards and bench space galore, and a second toilet. The four good-sized bedrooms (each with built-in wardrobe) wrap around a sparkling bathroom with semi-recessed vanity basin

The rural spread, five minutes from Lancefield, will eventually neighbour a Commonwealth Serum Laboratory facility, with high security, pristine conditions and quietness assured. This notable property is now ready for a new chapter. Carole Levy

35 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 29, 2016
SPORT Cricket fills the generation gap By Tara Murray Three generations of the Sankey family joined a rare club over the past two weekends as they took to the field for Lancefield in a Gisborne and District Cricket Association match. Tigers’ North-grade captain Shane Sankey played with his sons Callum and Matthew, as he has done often in recent seasons, in a two-day clash against Macedon. This time around, they were joined by another of Shane’s sons, 11-year-old Ben, for just his second-ever senior match. And after a little bit of coaxing, Shane’s father Tom Sankey made his debut for the Tigers at the age of 77. “It’s about 25 years since I’ve played with him,” Shane said of his dad after day one of the match. “Kevin McDonald [club president] and Luke Barker [senior coach] allowed him to come over and play. It got mentioned about playing together a while ago and dad’s ears pricked up. He’s always coming to watch the boys play cricket and was excited to join them.” While playing his first game for Lancefield, Tom was more than a handy cricketer in his prime. He’s a life member of the Gisborne Cricket Club and his cricket and football achievements on and off the field led to Gisborne’s Sankey Reserve being named in his honour. Despite his age, Tom continues to play cricket regularly.
Three generations of Sankeys – Tom, Shane, Matt, Callum and Ben – played in the same match for Lancefield. (Shawn Smits)
“He’s semi-retired from cricket but still plays in the Sunbury and District over-60s,” Shane added. “He also represented Victoria in over-70s cricket. On Saturday he kept [wicket] for 40 overs and was still throwing himself around behind the stumps.” Shane said taking to the field with his father and three of his five sons was a special moment.
His two younger sons, Tom and Ryan, play in under-11s. “When the kids were asked if they wanted to play with Pa they were very excited and during the game, there was a good buzz.” The result, though, didn’t go the Tigers’ way with Macedon’s target too big. Macedon made 190 on day one, with 14-year-old Matthew and 12-year-old Callum taking two wickets each for
the Tigers. After missing out on their Pa taking catches on any of their wickets, Shane hoped at least one of his kids would get to bat with their grandad. His wish came true, with Matthew and Tom putting on a fifth-wicket partnership of nine. Shane top-scored with 53 in the side’s reply of 152. Matthew made 21, Callum six, Ben four not out, and Tom one.
Hawk pick feels so right
Stiff resistance for Woodend
Calder Cannons’ Mitchell Lewis may have been the second last player picked in the AFL national draft on Friday night, but his name is one many football supporters will remember for years to come. Lewis was taken at pick 76 by Hawthorn, with only Jake Waterman, who joins West Coast, selected after him. A key forward from Whittlesea who can also play ruck, Lewis is a bit of an unknown in football circles but many saw the irony of his selection on Friday – the Hawks traded two of their stars, Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis, in the off season. The coincidences didn’t end there – Mitchell Lewis wears guernsey No.53 at the Cannons. At the Hawks, Mitchell and Lewis wore numbers five and three respectively. Mitchell Lewis is the first player to be drafted from Whittlesea. He played nine games with the Cannons last season and a further 10 games this year. His stand-out game this year came against Gippsland Power. He kicked four goals and had 13 marks in a best-on-ground performance. It was a quiet draft for the Cannons, with Lewis the only current player drafted. Former Cannon Luke Ryan was drafted by Fremantle, while former Woodend and Gisborne player Mitch Hannan was picked by Melbourne. Cannons late developers Ben Ronke and Zach Guthrie are expected to be in the mix for rookie spots. The rookie draft was due to be held on Monday. For the latest from the rookie draft, head to www.starweekly.com.au.
Woodend overcame a frustrating 10thwicket partnership from Rupertswood to secure its third win in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup competition. An easy Woodend win looked on the cards with Rupertswood in trouble at 9-146, still well behind Woodend’s 9-286. The last pairing of Lachlan McLean and Aaron Forward put up a fight to get Rupertswood to within striking distance. But while still needing more than a run a ball, Forward was run out for 31, leaving Rupertswood at 251, still 36 short. Woodend playing coach Michael Nalesnyik said that when bowling to the last-wicket pair the side stopped doing what it had done earlier in the innings. “They put up a really good fight and it came pretty close. There probably was some luck; they were running out of overs so they needed to get runs. Their number nine [McLean] batted really well and we didn’t look like getting him out.” McLean finished 75 not out for Rupertswood, while Nalesnyik, in his first season at Woodend, was best of its bowlers with five wickets. Woodend is one of three teams with three wins, two losses and a draw in what’s turning out to be a close competition. “I’m very proud with how they’ve been going about it,” Nalesnyik said. “We haven’t been bowled out this season and the last two weeks we’ve bowled really well except for the end on Saturday.” Elsewhere, Sunbury maintains top spot after a win against Romsey. Having already secured first innings points, Gisborne, led by Beau Valka with 124, batted on to make 9-320 against Riddell. Diggers Rest Bulla beat Bacchus Marsh in the other match.

Missing skips prove no problem for hot Sunbury side Sunbury is on a roll in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. After some early struggles, Sunbury has won its past three matches, including taking the scalp of Deer Park on Saturday. Saturday’s 81 (16) - 72 (2) win was made even more impressive because Sunbury was missing two of its regular skips. Sunbury’s David Glennon said getting the win against Deer Park while missing Carla Krizanic and Mark Cowan was a bonus. “It was a fantastic result,” he said. “We’ve now had three wins on the spin and all have been against good sides. Everyone has stepped up when they have needed to.” Regular skip Elise Cowan won 24-18, while Brad Janner’s rink lost 20-16. Brad Willoughby

returned to the side, his rink winning 24-18, while Shane Trewarne made his skip debut for Sunbury’s top side, winning 17-16. Glennon said Willoughby would skip the next two weeks while Krizanic and Mark Cowan were in New Zealand with the Australian team. “Brad can’t play every game due to his work,” Glennon said. “We asked if he could play while Carla and Mark are away,” he said. “He’ll play
all three of those games, but we’re not sure how many games he’ll play after that. “It’s good that we can pull someone of his calibre in when we need help.” Glennon also praised the efforts of Trewarne, whose rink came from 10-2 down. The win moves Sunbury to sixth on the ladder, 19 points behind fourth-placed Melton. The closesness of the top six sides means Sunbury is only 26 points from top. Glennon said the three weeks before the Christmas break would be vital for Sunbury if it is to secure a shock finals berth. “If we can get a couple of wins, we could sneak into the top four,” Glennon said. “We play Werribee, who are second bottom, away this week, and then the next two games at
Tigers back in top four By Tara Murray Lancefield returned to the winners’ list and the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade top four with a massive win against Ashfield on Saturday. Having made 247 on day one of the match, the Tigers entered day two confident about getting their third win of the season. The bowlers did their jobs, making runs hard to come by – and with that, wickets fell. In the Tigers’ most even performance of the season, they bowled Ashfield out for 108. Tigers coach Luke Barker was pleased. “It was a really good team effort,” he said. “We really set it up on day one of the match, with 247 a really good score.” Matthew Bowden took 7-32. Barker said Bowden was the first to admit he had been struggling this season. “He’s a good bowler, but he had been struggling a bit. Once he got on a roll, he kept going and the wickets started to flow.” The Tigers were 3-21 in their second innings at the end of the match. Barker said the win was good for players who had lost their past two games. He said despite not getting the results, they were a more consistent side than 12 months ago. “We hadn’t been playing bad cricket – we just weren’t taking our chances,” he said. “We are, though, a lot more consistent, especially with our batting. We made 220 last game and no one made 50. “This match we had four or five guys at least get 20.” The win moves the Tigers back into the top four in what is again looking to be a close competition. Barker knows every run and wicket is crucial at this stage. “Later in the season, we’ll hopefully benefit from bonus points,” he said. “Even yesterday, Wallan, which was undefeated, lost to Macedon … there’s only one game separating first to sixth. “The next two rounds we play St Anthonys and Sunbury United. In an ideal world, we would win both games and it will set up our season. “If we lose both, it’ll be hard to come back from.” The Tigers will be boosted by the return of Luke and Nathan Malone. In other matches, Macedon caused an upset by beating the previously undefeated Wallan. Defending 211, Macedon bowled Wallan out for 101. Oliver Clough took 5-59. Macedon was 7-89 in its second innings. Sunbury United chased down St Anthonys’ 244 with ease on the back of a century to Lance Watts. East Sunbury avoided an outright defeat against Bacchus Marsh. Matthew Bowden bowls himself back into form for Lancefield. (Shawn Smits)
home. Those games include Preston-Reservoir, who are really struggling this year. The other is Glenroy – they are just above us on the ladder.” Sunbury’s other teams didn’t have as much luck at the weekend, with only the division 5 side recording a win. In Central Highlands Bowls Division, Kyneton Golf moved back into the division 1 top four with a 107 (14) - 87 (4) victory over Bacchus Marsh. Gisborne and Lancefield remain undefeated after victories against Kyneton and Lancefield respectively, while Trentham was too good for Romsey. Bacchus Marsh, Diggers Rest, Mt Cottrell and Kyneton were the winners in division 2. Tara Murray
Girls football on Roo agenda Sunbury Kangaroos Junior Football Club are looking to field youth girls football teams for the first time next season. Still in the planning stage, the club will have information sessions in the coming weeks to seek interest from possible players. Kangaroos junior president Jacob Bennett said at this stage they were looking at entering sides in the new Essendon District Football League youth competition, which has under-12, under-15 and under-18 age groups. He said what age group the side or sides would play in would depend on the ages of interested players. “This is not confirmed as of yet as there is plenty of work going on behind the scenes to see what is a good fit for our club,” he said. “With our club coming off one of our most successful seasons with all football and netball teams making the finals, the addition of a youth girls team makes it even more exciting and to add to that we are also running the Auskick next season which will be great to get all the boys and girls involved.” The club is holding an information night on December 5 from 5pm and a second information night on December 12. Big names for state champs Three Victorian Country under-19 players will headline the Central Highlands under-18 team at January’s state championships. Former Gisborne junior Tom Rogers, former Bacchus Marsh player Jack Lalor and former Romsey player Matthew Milne are in the Highlanders side, which lost the grand final against Metropolitan South East Bayside in January. The team will be coached by Karl Mayne, who will be in his first year at the helm. Joining the three Victorian under-19 representatives, who were also part of this year’s Highlanders team, are East Sunbury’s Lachlan Brne, Carranballac’s Patrick Graham, Colts Phelans’ Mitchell Bench and Will Collicoat, Wallan’s Nathan Fowler, Ballarat-Redan’s Zac Jenkins, Gisborne’s Sam McCaskill, Wendouree’s Hugh Knight and Barkers Creek’s Darby Semmens.
