A new world to explore

(Dennis Manktelow)

There will be more for children to love about Swinburne Avenue Children’s Centre now that its $130,000 refurbishment has been completed. The Gisborne centre now boasts a new playground, a dry creek bed and a vegetable garden, all of which are designed to promote exploration, link existing play spaces and help children connect with the environment. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said high-quality early years education and care were vital to giving every child the best start in life. “We’re ensuring that children have access to early childhood services no matter where they live,” Ms Thomas said. “Investments like this will pay enormous dividends to local families in our community for years to come.” Swinburne Avenue is a two-room kindergarten that offers 112 four-year-old kindergarten places and 44 three-year-old places. The state government contributed $120,000 towards the centre’s upgrade with Macedon Ranges council contributing $10,000. JEMMA

Footy’s female challenge By Esther Lauaki All but one sports oval in the Macedon Ranges will need upgrades to make them more female friendly for future generations, according to a new report. An audit of 80 facilities in the Goldfields region, including 11 in the Ranges and four in Hume, found most needed some level of improvement. The audit was part of the newly released draft AFL Goldfields Regional Strategy. The most urgent improvements required were found to be to player and umpire change rooms, as well as lighting for ovals and netball courts. “Over 80 per cent of the region’s home-and-away change rooms and 60 per cent

of umpire change rooms do not cater for female participants,” the report stated. It said investment in change room amenities was essential to cater for growing female participation in football and recognition of netball as a major sport in the region. The report cited a nearly 40 per cent increase in female football participation across the region in the past 12 months, including Ararat, Ballarat, Hume, Macedon Ranges, Melton, Mitchell and Moorabool. While only four per cent of all player numbers in the Goldfields region are female, the report stated that a one per cent increase in the next decade would mean an estimated 945 female players would require access to

female-friendly facilities. Macedon Football Club’s Tamara Collins starts as a junior coach at the club next year. Her daughter is one of a few girls who has played in the boys under 10 and 12 teams and will this year line up with the under 14s team. She says that her daughter has to share the boys change facilities or use the social club rooms where there are female toilets. “I’m really passionate about girls participation in football and I think that upgrades to facilities are a very positive move for the game. “My daughter has grown up with the boys and she is seen as a teammate and not just a girl … I think the club’s doing a great job of making girls feel included at the moment.”

But Ms Collins said the issue of growing participation in football “goes a bit deeper than providing changing rooms”. “It’s about having great female role models within the clubs and creating female leadership roles,” she said. The report made 26 recommendations and pinpointed issues that needed immediate planning and action, including a review of netball facilities and club structures to ensure club sustainability. The AFL Goldfields Regional Strategy is a collaborative effort by organisations including AFL Victoria, Netball Victoria and the 14 local government authorities comprising the AFLGoldfields region.

Drugs, deception drive up crime By Esther Lauaki Drug offences and breaches of court orders were the big drivers behind the most recent spike in Sunbury’s crime rate. Data released by the Crime Statistics Agency last Thursday reveals 3111 offences were recorded in the year to September 30, up from 2672. There were 243 drug offences detected in Sunbury, up 5.2 per cent. Justice procedures, including breach of court

orders, soared from 271 to 489 cases over the same period – an 80.4 per cent jump. Deception related offences climbed 50.4 per cent, from 123 to 185. However, disorderly and offensive conduct offences dropped by 30.2 per cent, from 63 to 44, in the past year. Across Hume, the overall crime rate was up nearly 20 per cent. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn, a Bulla resident, described the latest figures as “absolutely unacceptable”.

“I looked at the statistics and to say I was appalled is very much an understatement,” Mr Finn said. “In Bulla, for example, crime rose by a whopping 114.61 per cent over a 12-month period, which is horrifying. “What this tells us is that we need more police to patrol our streets and to protect our communities.” The Victoria Police website said there were more than 140 full-time police officers based in Hume in September.

The state government earlier this month announced a further $2 billion would be spent recruiting 2729 new frontline and specialist Victorian police across the next four years. Overall crime in the Macedon Ranges was up 15.8 per cent, from 2194 to 2607 total offences. Breaches of court orders rose from 253 to 510, arson climbed from 27 to 43 offences, while court procedures went up from 43 to 78 (81.4 per cent). Sexual offences went up, from 48 to 63 offences. Slashing helps hold back fires

Eye trained on life’s finer details Behrend, an amateur photographer, said he is thrilled with the win, while judges Ben Goode, Esther Beaton and Michael Snedic remarked on the high calibre of his entry. “Kyle demonstrated the skill of a far more experienced photographer,” judge Snedic said. “The Hunt proves what an incredible eye he has for photography. “It was a special moment captured perfectly – great composition, timing and exposure … absolutely brilliant.”

Lancefield photographer Kyle Behrend has a keen eye for the finer things in life. His focus on details, combined with his love of nature, have won him a share in $5000 as part of Nature Conservancy Australia’s annual photography competition. Now in its third year, this year’s competition attracted a record 16,120 entries capturing images of landscapes, water and wildlife. Behrend’s image, called The Hunt, was snapped while he was at Rottnest Island in Western Australia, and was overall winner in the awards wildlife category.

Almost 1000 kilometres of road verges have been slashed across the Macedon Ranges as council maintenance crews work to catch up with the season. Community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said slashing began later than usual this year to allow time for grass to dry out. “A wetter winter and spring has seen increased grass growth across the shire, and we needed to wait until the conditions were right … if we cut too early when the grass is still wet and thick, then the slashing is not as effective,” Ms Lindner said. Macedon Ranges shire has 1700 kilometers of council roads, up hill and down dale, making for a complex and resource-intensive network to manage, she said. Council’s slashing program targets high traffic roads near grasslands and town boundaries to prevent fires from starting on roadsides and to limit the spread if fire starts on a roadside. Macedon CFA captain Greg Snart said that lit cigarette butts continue to cause many roadside fires during summer. “They’re a problem every year,” captain Snart said. “We also see people who go out with their ride-on mowers and then hit a stone, which can also ignite a fire.” Ms Lindner advised residents living in high fire risk areas to ensure they prepare their properties well for the fire danger period, and that they have a written fire plan that they have practiced. VicRoads is responsible for roadside slashing on all arterial roads. Fire-ready information: www.cfa.vic. gov.au or mrsc.vic.gov.au/fire-ready

Buyer beware: residents warn By Esther Lauaki

Honours due for milestone efforts

(Dennis Manktelow)

A Sunbury couple has spent close to $3000 in the past nine months navigating Hume council’s permit application process in a bid to build a fence around their property. Donna and Alan James built their first home, on a “modest” block of land, in Rosenthal estate in December last year and began the permit process in April in their bid to build fences and a retaining wall. The James’ first application to Hume council was rejected by officers in June because of an “overlooking” issue – meaning that their home sits higher than their rear neighbour’s home because of the slope of their land. “I would never recommend to anyone to buy an undeveloped block of land like we did,” Mrs James said. “We bought a modest block to save money and have had to borrow $20,000 to build the retaining wall. “To sum it up, our retaining wall with fence breaches regulations – but if we don’t build a retaining wall and fence, we are breaching regulations. “The side neighbors have a small child, and we are very concerned about the safety, not to mention security, of the situation. This is not some pretty pergola or a shed – we have no fence and our soil is slowly washing away.” The couple was required to provide a revised set of drawings, which cost $2200, and a number of written permissions from neighbours and developers for their second application, which cost an additional $256. A Hume council spokeswoman said a permit was issued last week. “[The application] was rejected in the first instance because extra information was required and that caused some delays,” she said.

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges colleges are celebrating all their year 12 students with Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank scores yielding top results for many. Salesian College’s Sahil Balak scored an impressive 99.1 out of 100 – the highest in the region according to the college. The year 12 dux wants to study science at Monash University. Sahil took on a range of subjects, but he said he only started liking science in year 10, when chemistry and physics sparked his interest. “My father told me to just give science a go,” Sahil said. “I then became hooked.” Sahil said he was “really honoured” to be dux of Salesian College. Principal Mark Brockhus said the college is proud of all its students and their efforts this year. Gisborne Secondary College dux was Josh Anastasov who received an ATAR score of 96.85. Principal Andrew Robertson said he was the first male dux since 2010. Sunbury College principal Steven Smith said he was pleased with the combined academic results of his students, with Tayla Bradbury achieving a dux score of 89.85. Kyneton Secondary College dux Sasha Sciberras scored 95.15. MARK BROCKHUS AND SAHIL BALAK

Mark of the man lives on Sebastiano Pitruzzello will be most remembered for his patience and his dogged work ethic. Mr Pitruzzello, 76, died on November 24 after a long battle with cancer. The well-loved Sunbury entrepreneur founded the Pitruzzello Estate olive grove and vineyard in 2010. He arrived in Australia from Italy with “nothing but a suitcase” in 1963, according to Olive Grove manager and friend Olga Sorgiovanni. “He was a generous and caring man who worked very hard for his family,” Ms Sorgiovanni said. The estate where he methodically planted 12,000 olive trees and 13,000 vines now yields more than 20,000 litres of olive oil a year.

The Pitruzzello name is also synonymous with prize-winning cheese. Mr Pitruzzello started the successful Pantalica Cheese Company in 1973. He was also a respected captain of industry and the proud bearer of a Knight Commander of the Italian Republic – an honour reserved for leading industrialists. Ms Sorgiovanni said he was equally proud of the gold medals he had achieved for his extra virgin olive oil that had pride of place at his cellar door. A Hume Business award for sustained business excellence was presented to Mr Pitruzzello at his bedside earlier this year. Mr Pitruzzello is survived by wife Lucia and children Biagio, Silvio and Antonella. Esther Lauaki

New faces a big lift for Sunbury SES There will be 10 extra pairs of hands at Sunbury State Emergency Service this summer. The service’s new recruits achieved their general rescue qualifications this month and will soon be able to assist with casualty handling, safety at operations, communications equipment, rope rescue systems and power tools. General rescue is the core qualification that all SES members across Victoria must complete before moving on to other qualifications, such as road crash rescue, search and rescue, and storm and flood response. Newly qualified member Matt Simmons said he was proud of the group’s achievements. “I joined to help people, and SES provide all the training and equipment to make sure that you can do just that,” Mr Simmons said. Unit controller Anthony White congratulated the recruits on their efforts. “The dedication and commitment required getting to this point in a new volunteer’s career with SES is significant,” he said. “Their efforts have resulted in allowing them to now better serve the community. “It’s our families and friends who provide much-needed support to allow us to do what we do – without their help and support, being a volunteer would be much more difficult.” Sunbury SES has about 60 operational and non-operational members serving Sunbury, Diggers Rest, Bulla and parts of Clarkefield and Toolern Vale.

TO SAT 24TH DEC

Written By: John Davis Physiotherapist With the fine weather arriving many people are returning back to regular exercise. We see many people in the clinic that have recently returned to exercise with complaints including muscular aches and strains, tendinopathy, bone stress injuries and general overuse complaints. Many of these injuries could be avoided by following the guidelines below.

25

%

It’s great you want to get back to exercising, whether it’s running, cycling or tennis, all of these activities need to be progressed accordingly. Ensuring you gradually increase your exposure to sporting activity is vital to participating pain free while reaping the benefits of your hard work. As a simple rule, you want to start with a gentle version of your desired activity to ease yourself into it. Take running for example; before running you can start with walking for 30 minutes, then walk/run, before finally being able to run for 30 minutes. This can be progressed over a period of 4-6 weeks with the running intervals getting longer until the entire effort is a running one. The general rule with running and most other repetitive activities is to increase weekly distance OR speed/effort by 10% per week. This means if you increase your speed you shouldn’t run any further that week. This process is referred to as progressive overload, or simply exposing your body to a gradual increase in load rather than a sudden increase that often leads to injury.

Finally, listen to your body. If it’s sore, it’s probably for a reason and you may have done too much. Back it off a little, don’t try to “run it off” and if it lingers make an appointment to see your physiotherapist.

The other important aspect of exercise is rest. Rest is just as important as training and is when the body adapts to cope with the prior day’s load. Without rest our bodies can’t get stronger or more efficient and that P.B. will be hard to achieve. Start exercising every third day working up to every second day.

The gardens at Mount Macedon’s Duneira Estate were graced by acrobatic fairies as part of the estate’s family-friendly Christmas program. The theatrical event was aimed at getting young people to explore the gardens. Circus performers and actors delighted young children and their families, many of whom dressed up in fairy or elfin costumes in the spirit of the event. The annual Christmas carols in the gardens rounded out the night. Duneira director Jacqueline Ogeil says the event offered a “magical experience” for the community. “The children joined in on a magical and crazy journey to find the missing fairy dust,” Ms Ogeil said. “Parents enjoyed a picnic while their children were involved in the fairy show. It was a great way to relax in the busy lead-up to Christmas, with a picnic under a shady tree. “Children had a magical experience that captured their imaginations and at the same time encouraged them to experience the wonder and beauty of a historic garden.” Esther Lauaki

Fire danger starts now

SCREWLOOSE BAND MEMBERS AIMEE NOORDHOORN AND KEITH TRAIL

Town party unplugged Macedon families are invited to pack a picnic and get down to the park for a party. The inaugural community Christmas party is on tomorrow night (December 21) to celebrate the end of the school year, and ring in the festive season. Local bands will play all the Christmas favourites while Macedon Scouts will spread holiday cheer from behind the barbecue. There will also be plenty of children’s entertainment. Organiser Chris Finch, from the Macedon Villages volunteers, said while a block party on Victoria Street was originally

planned, the natural beauty of Ash Wednesday Park had won the inaugural staging rights. “We thought the event would bring all the residents of Macedon and Mt Macedon together to celebrate all that we enjoy about our towns, while celebrating the spirit of Christmas,” Mr Finch said. He said he hoped it would become an annual event. The Christmas party will be at Ash Wednesday Memorial Park in Smith Street, Macedon, from 5pm until 9pm.

SUNBURY

There’ll be no tolerance for burn-offs in the Macedon Ranges now that the fire danger period has started. That’s the warning from Country Fire Authority district two operations manager Trent McKinnon after a testy spring plagued by high winds and sudden heat waves. “Out-of-control burn-offs and unregistered burn-offs have been a major headache for brigades,” Mr McKinnon said. “Expect any fire you start to be fully investigated by police.” The Country Fire Authority declared the 2016-17 fire danger period for Macedon Ranges shire as of Monday morning, December 19. Lighting a fire in the open without a permit can bring a penalty of more than $21,600 and, or a 12 month jail term. Barbecues and fires must only be lit in properly constructed fireplaces. The use of incinerators, chainsaws, lawn mowers, welding/grinding equipment and machinery with an internal combustion/heat engine are permitted provided conditions are met. Farmers can find legal guidelines and practical advice at cfa.vic.gov.au/farming – this information is especially important for new farmers, bush block owners and hobby farmers. A total fire ban means no fires can be lit for that day unless there is a specific exemption or special permit issued. Information: www.cfa.vic.gov.au/can

Goonawarra grade 6 pupils Memo, Rachel, Virginia and Ruby. (Damjan Janevski)

Pupils care and connect Youngsters at Goonawarra Primary School have been spreading the love for their community around and boosting their resilience at the same time. Grade 5 and 6 pupils completed eight community projects this year, including three buddy benches at the Sunbury school, a food drive to help local foodbanks and sending tables, chairs and school supplies to a school in Papua New Guinea. School chaplain Ben Smith says the projects helped the children to become more connected with the wider community. “Students in grade 5 and 6 at Goonawarra Primary School have this year been empowered to create and implement projects of community

service where they get to make a difference to other people in their local community,” Mr Smith said. “After students undertook a survey conducted by Resilient Youth Australia, it was discovered that areas that could best assist our students to improve their resilience were by improving their community connectedness and their mental health. “Research shows that a powerful way to increase the resilience and wellbeing of children is to empower them and give them a voice.” Students presented what they had learned during the projects at a special assembly. What inspired your line of work? I have worked in diverse jobs, from factory hand to academic. It’s taken me a long time to find what I am really passionate about. Where are your Indigenous connections, and what do you like about Sunbury? I am a Palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) woman, and I love working in community.

Tell me about your work with Sunbury Community Health? The aim of this role is to engage Aboriginal people in Sunbury, supporting them to create a sense of community that has been lacking in the past. I love my job, it is usually more fun than work. I’m fortunate that Sunbury Community Health support me and trust that, however odd my ideas may be, I know my community and what will work. We have, over the past three and a half years, had three large community events, we have had meals together, we have been fortunate to host a number of events involving Richard Frankland. Our most recent activity was a Koolin Balit-funded project that involved young Aboriginal people in Sunbury being taught how to write a script, act in, film and edit short films. They were taught by the Victorian College of the Arts and the Wilin Centre (Melbourne University). It culminated in a film festival called Short and Deadly films.

The Aboriginal community in Sunbury is a diverse mob … many work in professional roles, others are unemployed, some retired, a growing number of young people. Sunbury has the highest percentage of Aboriginal youth in Hume. It seems a small number, about 500, but the percentage of Sunbury’s population that is

Aboriginal is the same as the state percentage. What would you change about Sunbury? Sunbury has five of seven ceremonial rings in Victoria. I’d like to see more appreciation (and celebration) of the Aboriginal community.

TRAVEL STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Darwin to Adelaide on a luxury train By John Huxley, via The Age Silhouetted against infinite blue skies and a dusty, red background, surrounded by old friends such as Bernie the Buffalo, Tin Shaker the Brahmin cow and Cecil the Mule, Tom Curtain climbs atop an old favourite, “Legend the Trick Horse”. From the centre of one of several stockyards – hung with boards bearing messages such as “You’re in cattle country… eat meat, you bastard” – he plays his guitar, banging out a few tracks from his award-winning album Smack Bang Bang. Earlier, he has held a big, predominantly townie audience, entranced as, before our eyes, he breaks in a wild horse with a mix of cajolery, gentle pushes and prods, rewards and, of course, whispers. Clearly, Legend is, in the words of celebrity chefs, “one I prepared earlier”: he and Tom make a moving double act. Or triple, if his attractive, hard-working cowgirl partner Annabel Mclarty is included. They, their animals – and, it seems, the noisy jets from the nearby Tindal air base – are all part of the Katherine Outback Experience. Like the alternative, “dreamtime” river cruise-walk, up the nearby Nitmiluk Gorge, the outback experience offers a glimpse of the slow-beating heart of Australia from a stopping train. The magnificent. The luxurious. The historic. The Ghan. Katherine is just the first stop on a memorable, three-night, four-day, 2979-kilometre trip from Darwin to Adelaide, on a 902-metre-long train that, in the course of a year, travels 369,000 kilometres, serves 585,000 meals and – a private interest – 23,000 cans of Coke. Throughout its trip, the train offers 330 or so guests not just a measure of ingeniously

engineered comfort, good company, cheerful service and fine dining, but a cultural, historical and, in the burning-hot, backblocks of Coober Pedy, an underground experience. As The Ghan guest brochure notes approvingly, famous travel writer and train

enthusiast Paul Theroux, author of The Great Railway Bazaar, once suggested, “our dreams often begin with a consciousness of exotic place names”. In Australia – described hereabouts by one guide as “the land beyond the horizon” – few

place names come more exotic than that of Coober Pedy, a name which comes from the local, Aboriginal term “kupa-piti”. It means, roughly, “boys in a hole”: possibly waterhole, or possibly a hole dug by those who have come in their tens of thousands in search

Sunbury increased its community health credentials today when Vineyard Medical Centre received a national award of accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to quality and safety within its practice. Vineyard Medical Centre received this important recognition from Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL), the leading not-for-profit provider of general practice accreditation services within Australia. AGPAL Chair Dr Richard Choong said accreditation shows the practice makes a significant investment and commitment to quality on a day-to-day basis, across all levels of the practice team. “Achieving accreditation is a major achievement for any practice and a clear demonstration that Vineyard Medical Centre is striving to improve their level of care to both patients and the community,” he said. “Practices seek accreditation because they want to do their best and view this as another step towards excellence in patient care.” To achieve accreditation, a practice team works over a 12 month period to implement the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for general practices, (the recognised national standard), which provides a template for quality care and risk management. The AGPAL accreditation program was developed to provide a range of minimum expectations for patients surrounding safety and care by assessing the practice environment and their processes. Accreditation was developed jointly by AGPAL and primary health organisations and peak bodies, including the Australian Medical Association (AMA). Areas of focus during an on-site assessment for accreditation include: ensuring vaccines are within their use-by-date and stored at the correct temperatures; that the practice equipment is clean and sterile; practice staff are up-to-date with their training; and the practice has emergency care available. Dr Choong said accreditation is attainable only through cooperation and communication between staff members. ”Everyone at the practice plays a valuable role in working to meet the RACGP Standards. It gives staff a real sense of pride to work in an accredited practice,” added Dr Choong. Vineyard Medical Centre proudly displays the AGPAL symbol for all their patients to see. “We want community members, nation-wide to know that their wellbeing is our priority. By choosing to attend an accredited practice, patients know they will get quality and safe care that meets the RACGP Standards.” The practice, located at 2-6 Sussex Court, Sunbury has special interest in providing optimal healthcare to their patients. With 11 GP’s, Allied Health, specialists, an onsite pharmacy, dentist and pathology rooms, patients are able to have most of their health needs attended to at one facility.

AGPAL is the leading not-for-profit provider in general practice accreditation services; for further information on AGPAL please visit www.agpal.com.au or free call 1300 362 111.

of the elusive, starry blue opal upon which the fortunes of the town have wildly waxed and waned. There is a magic, too, in many of the evocative names of the places through which The Ghan travels. They include, from north to south, Muchaty, Illoquara, Coondambo, Pimba, Bookaloo, Hesso, Crystal Brook, Rocky River, Dry Creek. It was not until 2001 that The Ghan line was extended by 1420 kilometres to connect Alice Springs to Darwin, the guide explains as we rejoin the train to resume our trip south. That night, our first on board, we dine on such local delicacies as scallops, crocodile sausage, smoked duck and grilled barramundi, washed down by a wide choice of top, predominantly Australian wines. That night, too, we experience the deft way in which cabin seats and side tables, are replaced by drop-down beds. As all guests are warned in advance – especially in the main, gold class – space on The Ghan is at a premium. Bulky bags should be stowed elsewhere on the train. Waiters and waitresses, dressed in checkered black and white shirts, serve guests sitting at dazzling, wedding-white tables, from a menu including poached chicken and saffron shallots, followed by Thousand Guineas tenderloin and the chef’s selection of pavlova and chocolate brownies. The atmosphere is laid-back. Some guests are happy to sit around chatting to new-found friends. Some go, aptly, for a camel ride. Some inspect the old telegraph station and its fascinating museum pieces. Others dance away the night to the music of a local country singer or, best of all, enjoy the trip through the starry, starry skies by a local astronomer. It is a

On about 4000 square metres, this elegant residence and landscaped surrounds allows one to enjoy the peace of rural life, yet the town centre is five minutes by car. A palette of taupes, white and sandstone, roman blinds on most (large) windows and lavishness of space underscore broad appeal. Living areas are a sprawling lounge room with wood heater, a theatre room, kids’ retreat and a wonderful attic rumpus room. The four big bedrooms include the large main with twin walk-in wardrobes and en suite with dual basins and a tub. The stylish kitchen has abundant white cupboards and Caesarstone benches. Bifolds open to a gable-roofed courtyard where steps in a stone retaining wall head up to the 15 x 7.5-metre shed. Extras include gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling, CCTV security, 6kW solar inverter system, 30,000-litre water tank and integrated double garage.

In a magnificent garden setting, this house on about 4.06 hectares, combines with horse shelters, great shedding, dams (plus town water) and pasturage to support a rural retreat lifestyle. A long, leafy driveway leads to the updated house, which has three bedrooms – the main with walk-through wardrobes and en suite. The main bathroom has a spa; the toilet is separate. Roomy living areas include an L-shaped lounge-dining room and a meals area, with the kitchen at the centre. A large rumpus room, with timber bar and split-system, connects with the meals zone, which has french doors to the three-sided verandah. The slate-floored kitchen has loads of white cabinetry, charcoal benchtops and stainless-steel mod cons. Pergolas are in the grounds where Mt Macedon views, a gorgeous pond, circular rose garden and other attractive plantings put on a fine show.

“A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!” Christmas is just around the corner and where has this year gone? As Christmas approaches it is time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and to remind ourselves of the importance of family and friends. Why do we have Christmas? What is it all about? The first Christmas was the birth of a baby boy. A refugee baby whose parents had fled from persecution and upon their arrival in Bethlehem found that the only accomodation was in a stable. There in the stable a baby was born - a baby who led a movement which, over 2000 years on still survives and that movement is called Christianity.

All town services are available including town gas, town water, sewage, internet, phone and a manmade road frontage. Make your dream a reality. Sealed Offfffers to:

Whether you believe in the Christmas story or not, this is nevertheless a time to gather as family together, r to r, catch up with friends and to remind ourselves that there are lonely people who have no family and may be far from home. A smile and a greeting can mean so much.

The Offi f ce of Chess Property ffi Consultants - no later than 5pm on 12 January 2017.

Amid the Christmas trees, the decorations, the gifts and the food - take a moment to check on the elderly in your neighbourhood; to spare a thought for the sick and the lonely and remember one of the teachings of that baby boy - “do unto others as you would have them do unto you!”

Young Knights fly high Sherwood Knights matched it with the best teams in the state at Softball Victoria’s under-12 Spectacular Gala Day earlier this month. Eight teams competed for gold at the gala day having progressed to the finals after winning their respective region qualifying events in November. Knights’ coach Michael Bedwell said it was the first Sunbury Softball Association side to make it through to the final eight. The Knights won through from the northern region, which

included teams from Northern Districts, Deer Park, Sunshine and other Sunbury teams. “It was a real surprise,” Bedwell said. “There’s a really good bunch of youngsters at Sunbury and the quality has lifted. “The kids were really excited. Many of the parents had Christmas parties that they had to rearrange. All of the kids made it to the day.” The Knights won four games and drew the other to finish equal fourth. Each team plays five games, with sides ranked on wins, losses, runs for and runs against. Bedwell said while the children loved

winning games, the event was more about having fun. “All the children played different positions,” he said. “We had a couple of kids who are eight and you’re only allowed two 12-year-olds. The rest of the 13 were nine, 10 or 11. “They didn’t care whether they won or lost. There was some really good moments in games, pressure moments. “You’d think with five games on a hot day they would relax before games. But they were all out hitting and pitching between games. “It was all played in really good spirit.”

Sunbury United will become just the second club in Australia to host Soar Football Academy’s UK football trials. The trials, run under the watchful eyes of overseas’ coaches, managers and recruiters, is a big boost for the club. United vice-president Paul Di Blasi said they hope the trials will be an annual event and help build the club’s profile. He said 100 senior and 50 junior players will come from across Australia for the trials and a chance at $2000 in flights and accommodation to trial with an English Premier League club. “It’s great exposure for the club,” he said. “It’s something we’ve been working on for a while, and it means a lot. “The academy is run really well and has really good coaches.” The trials will include two days of training in all age groups, and include information sessions on what it takes to be a professional. Among the visitors will be Micky Adams, who has been a player and manager at EPL clubs, Manchester United Soccer Schools’ international head coach Robin Van Der Laan, former pro goalkeeper Mark Grew and current Premier League scout Anthony Williams. Di Blasi said local coaches and players alike will get the chance to learn from the coaches and recruiters. “On the middle day, there’s a two-hour experience for Sunbury players with the coaches,” he said.

SPORT Bombers mount winning raid on another T20 title Riddell’s reign as the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s top T20 side continues with the Bombers winning the premier division title. The Bombers are a formidable team when it comes to the shorter format, having won the title last season after being runners-up the season before. On Tuesday night, they faced Sunbury in the premier division grand final. In the most even performance from the side across the four games they played in the competition, the Bombers posted 7-150. Cameron Moran, Matthew Darby, Daniel Fisk and Heath Wadden all scored 20 runs or more. In reply, the Bombers restricted Sunbury to 109.

Captain-coach Mick Allen and Matthew Livingstone took two wickets each. Allen said winning the toss was vital on a night tricky for batsmen. “Everyone contributed with the bat and it was the same with the ball,” he said. “There’s no real fielding restrictions in the competition, so you can cover the boundaries easily. We had to restrict them early on.” The Bombers’ pressure with the ball and in the field caused four run-outs, with Allen saying they were a key to getting the win. “If you don’t take those opportunities, you can let the game slip,” he said. Allen said Riddell had a side best suited to the short game. “We’ve got a lot of players who can do both

[bat and bowl] and can hit a long way, like we saw with Matthew Darby in one of the earlier games,” he said. Allen said he hoped the result would help build the confidence of the side heading into the second half of the season. The Bombers have at least two other T20 matches to come. As winners of the GDCA competition, they will play in the region’s Central Willow event in January. They are also through to the final eight of Regional Big Bash. Allen said they were keen to progress as far as possible in both. “The boys really enjoy T20,” he said. “ There’s only two games between us and playing at the

MCG [in the Regional Big Bash] and a lot of the guys have never played there. We’re taking it pretty serious.” Meanwhile, Wallan had a convincing win against Sunbury United in the GDCA’s district division grand final. United made 9-106, with Lance Watts (43) and Austin Young (17) the only batsmen to reach double figures. Russell Whittingham put on a display in Wallan’s innings, his 83 not out including seven fours and five sixes as the Magpies reached the target with nine wickets and four overs to spare. The Magpies finished on 1-107. Tara Murray

Gisborne is well represented in the Central Highlands girl’s state championships sides, with six players named in the three teams. Molly Sparke, Georgia Kerr and Bianca Mackay are named in the under-18 team; Imogen Barlow and Georgia Paton are named in the under-16 squad and Bridget Barlow in the under-14 squad. Others in the squad include Lancefield’s Brianna Woodburn (under-18s), Romsey’s Kaitlynn Pateron (under-18s), Sunbury United’s Madeline Jones (under-16s) and Kara Gifford (under-14s), Kyneton’s Charli Copeland (under-14s) and East Sunbury’s Jessica Hourigan in the under-14 squad. The under-18 championships got under way last week.

Netball

Adam Johnstone was the only batsman for Woodend to get going on Saturday.

Several Riddell District Netball League players have been selected in the ACU Sovereigns Victorian Netball League squads for next year. The Sovereigns named a combined championship and division 1 squad, which includes Riddell’s Cayley Armstrong, Macedon’s Janelle Birch and Chloe Wilson, Romsey’s Danielle Davidson and Lancefield’s Anica Shearer. Riddell’s Brianna DeHaas has been named in the development squad. Sunbury Lions Keara Fitzgerald is in the under-19 squad.

(Damjan Janevski)

Upsets create tight race By Tara Murray Ladder positions mattered little on Saturday, as the top three teams suffered losses in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Woodend remains in touch with the top three sides after Saturday’s results, which included Woodend defeating second-placed Gisborne. It was a tough day for the batsmen with Woodend’s skipper Adam Johnstone the only player to get going in his side’s total of 129. He made 54. After taking four wickets last round, Warren Else took 5-25 to help bowl Gisborne out for 108. Bacchus Marsh knocked off top side Sunbury with the highest score of the round in the top division. The Bulls managed to make 8-191 from their 40 overs, with openers Mili Sepala (40 runs) and Ian Spiteri (44 runs) the best of the

batsmen. Sunbury gave the target a push and was ahead of the necessary run rate, but the loss of wickets proved costly. Sunbury was bowled out for 173. A career high of 73 not out from Steven Jenkin and 49 from Kel McInnes weren’t enough, with little support from anyone else. Riddell did it with ease against Diggers Rest Bulla. The Burras struggled with the bat making just 127. Daniel Fisk took 3-31 and Jack Baker took 2-21 for the Bombers. Bomber skipper Mick Allen again showed why he’s the best batsman in the competition, making an unbeaten 78. In six innings so far this season, Allen averages 99.25, having hit two centuries and two 50s. He also has two 50s in T20 matches. Brendan Alger chipped in with an unbeaten 39 in the Bombers’ total of 0-131. The Bombers still had 16 overs in hand. In the other match, it was another one-sided affair, with Romsey making light work of Rupertswood. Rupertswood batsmen struggled

to get going with Joshua Smith the only batsman to make more than 16. He made 36 in the side’s total of 84. Romsey didn’t waste any time getting the runs, with nearly half the overs remaining. Romsey finished on 1-86. Despite the results, the top three remain unchanged with Sunbury on top ahead of Gisborne and Diggers Rest. Woodend sits fourth ahead of Bacchus Marsh, Romsey, Riddell and then Rupertswood. The B-grade competition couldn’t get much closer with three teams separated by 0.27 points heading into the Christmas break. Sunbury United slipped from first to third with a loss to Lancefield. The Tigers made 5-122 off their overs with skipper Luke Barker making 54 not out. United was bowled out for 108. Wallan went to the top of the ladder with victory against Ashfield. Macedon defeated East Sunbury to keep the pressure on the top three sides. Macedon is less then four points off top spot. All GDCA cricket resumes on January 7.

Bowls

Sunbury won a thrilling contest against Glenroy in Bowls Victorian Pennant division 1, section 1. Looking to be in touch with the top four heading into the Christmas break, Sunbury had an eight shot win, 79 (16)-71 (2). Mark Cowan, Carla Krizanic and Brad Janner skippered the winning rinks. Sunbury remains sixth on the ladder.

Netball

Reigning premiers Riddell are on the hunt for an A-grade netball coach for next year’s Riddell District Netball League season. Applications close January 31. To submit applications or for more information, contact Maxine at mcasson81@gmail.com or call 0488 685 994.
