The Captain’s Message Our vision is for our club to be one that fills rooms at functions, connects different generations of supporters and players together, and provides a social hub in the heart of Wyndham where anyone who loves the Werribee Football Club belongs.

It’s a very exciting year for the Werribee Football Club. As players, we’ve been presented with a unique opportunity to build the future of the club, and we are very excited to do so. It’s a year of firsts – our first inside look at the new facility, the first game as a standalone club in nearly 20 years and our first home game. All very exciting milestones.

We, as players, are the lucky ones who get to walk out on the field in a Werribee jumper. I promise you that this privilege is not lost on any of us, and we invite you to share in this journey with us. Together, there is no limit to what we can achieve on the field and in the community.

But just as exciting will be seeing the return of old Werribee faces, who can reconnect with the club and enjoy our triumphs together. You have all been great contributors to this proud club in the past, and we invite you to share in the excitement of the next stage of our club’s history.

Of course, what I have just written is simply words on paper, and by themselves they aren’t worth much. So please put my words to the test by coming along to a game and seeing things with your own eyes. Your support, even if only for a game, will mean the world to the players and the club.

This season, we have a strong core of returning players and our list has been complemented with a number of new recruits. I can promise everyone that we are desperate for on-field success and have been working extremely hard to achieve this.

Together, let’s build a club that the entire Wyndham community can be proud of.

As we embark on a new season, we are full of optimism at the opportunities that lie ahead. We are now a club that truly represents the City of Wyndham and all of the wonderful people that live in the community.

WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY SPECIAL FEATURE

The coach’s view

The 2018 season will be senior coach John Lamont’s fifth year in the job, but even he acknowledges it is like a new beginning. In a recent interview with K-Rock Football he said: “I’m starting a new job again. Even though I’m going into my fifth year, I feel completely fresh because the job’s changed for the third time now.” Lamont was a key member of the 1993 Werribee premiership team, kicking three goals to set up the historic victory, but he could never have imagined where he would be 25 years later. The old Chirnside Park has become Avalon Airport Oval and the senior coach is in seat 1A as he pilots the new breed of Werribee players into the next chapter in the history of the club. The ground has changed, as have the coaching requirements for the modern game. Lamont will be backed up by a new-look team, headed by senior assistant Jeff Andrews, Shayne Stone (backs) Matt Kershaw (midfield) Jacob Spolding (forwards) Brad Julier (rucks/bench) Dave Newett (kicking) plus additional support from Dean Chambers and Jack Fitzpatrick. The VFL is a tough, uncompromising competition, and with no AFL alignment for the first time in nearly 20 years, Lamont is realistic about what is required: “We need to compete hard so we are winning 52 per cent of contested ball and clearances, we need efficient ball use and to defend well as a team. We will not be dour, we will be endeavour to play a good brand of football that is sustainable into finals. There is no finish line on what this playing group is trying to achieve. We expect that attitude from now on.” With the best seat in the house, a new house and a new season, ‘JL’ has a lot to look forward to and so do the Werribee members and supporters.

When a figure close to $12 million gets bandied about, there is an expectation that the ‘digs’ will be of a certain standard. So what does nearly $12 million get you these days in Watton Street? The Werribee Football Club and the community of the City of Wyndham should be very proud of the facility that will host VFL football for the first time this Saturday night. Here is a Star Weekly exclusive look at some of the inner areas that most of the public will never see.

The Button name lives on The Button name has been a part of the Werribee Football Club since the late 1960s when Henry made his debut. The former Werribee policeman holds the distinction of being the first player to reach 100 games for the club. He is also part of the only 100-game father and son combination in the club’s history. Henry and Margaret’s son, Andrew, was part of the 1993 premiership team and played 130 games between 1989 and 2000. Andrew’s son Tom played development league games for the club in 2016, creating the third generation of Buttons to wear the gold and black. Name: Henry Button Games: 108 – the first Werribee senior player to reach the 100-game milestone. Goals: 35 Recruited from: Footscray, by Ian Bryant and Jack Shanahan. Jumper Number: 11 Senior Debut: 1968 Most memorable game: Watching Andrew in the 1993 grand final was the greatest moment I could ever have had. Funniest recollection of your time: I remember the great social times we had with the players and wives after games. We all helped build the bar in the change rooms so we made sure we got plenty of enjoyment out of it, and we did. I remember we bought our first lounge suite with the money I received from the Bridge Hotel award one year, that was pretty good. Life after Werribee: Swan Hill. Other clubs/achievements: Werribee Centrals as coach and player, Sea Lake and Swan Hill. Profession: Policeman (Henry was a Chief Inspector).

Top: Henry (left) and Andrew. Right: Zac, Andrew, Tom and Henry Button.

C L U B Main: The 1988 Reserves Premiership Squad. Headshots: Des Tudor, Greg Hitch and Stephen Sells.

30 years ago Thirty years ago, back in 1988, Bob Hawke was Prime Minister, John Cain was Premier and Home and Away became a television series as well as a description of the footy season fixture. It was another interesting year for the red-nosed Tigers, as the club was known then, under new coach Des Tuddenham. The previous year, 1987, saw the senior team bow out in the preliminary final and the reserves win the club’s inaugural premiership under Des Tudor. The 1988 season was the final year of the two division VFA competition and the club was determined to finish with a bang. The seniors again exited in the preliminary final, losing by less than a goal to Sunshine. The reserves made it back-to-back flags. Tudor’s charges lost only one home and away game and cruised to a 58-point win in the grand final over Camberwell. Barry Spierings – who would become the club’s first draftee – won the award for best player

in the reserves in two finals games. Stephen Sells claimed the club’s first competition medal by winning the last Field Medal presented. He was also selected for the state squad, as was Greg Hitch, who 30 years later has his son Luke on the Werribee playing list. Another player on the 1988 list was Sean Mould, who was awarded best first year player in the thirds. His son Joshua has joined Werribee this year. One thing has certainly changed in 30 years and that is the ground. In the president’s report for that year Dr Michael Turner noted: “It would be remiss of me if I did not comment on the terrible state of Chirnside Park during the season. The ground was nothing more than a quagmire for most of the season.” While current president Martin Carter has no control over Mother Nature, he can be pretty confident Avalon Airport Oval at Chirnside Park will be in tip top shape for 2018.

A Werribee versus Williamstown game, past players and officials and the Ladies Day High Tea.

Happy at home Werribee fans will be in home-game heaven as football returns to Avalon Airport Oval at Chirnside Park this weekend. After a long year of refurbishment, the pay-off starts this Saturday night under lights when the Werribee boys will take on the Casey Demons. The game heralds a month of great football action as the club showcases what it has to offer on and off the field for the future. Round three will see Williamstown travelling to Werribee for a much-anticipated clash on Sunday, April 22, from 2pm. This old-fashioned suburban rivalry is based on years of close, hard-fought contests between two sides with great mutual respect – but not much fondness – for each other. Both clubs have gone stand-alone, with no AFL alignment, so this game will be like the old days. The annual Werribee Women’s Football Circle High Tea will return to the salubrious Chirnside by the River for round four on Saturday, April 28.

The Channel Seven cameras will cover the clash against the Richmond Tigers as the ladies enjoy scones, pastries, bubbles and secret women’s business upstairs. To ensure a big finish to the first month of 2018 football, Collingwood’s black and white army will descend on Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, May 5. The twilight Werribee versus Collingwood encounter will start at 5pm as Werribee celebrates with the annual Past Players and Officials Day. What a blast it will be for those who have been involved in the history of the club to see its future unfolding. The club will host official pre-game functions for all home games. The events are open to the public and offer an insight into the latest news and events around the club. President Martin Carter and senior coach John Lamont speak before each home game, joined by high-profile guest speakers from all walks of life. Bookings are available for all functions via the online shop at werribeefc.com.au

The other Werribee team Werribee Football Club has always relied on hard working people who love the club and go above and beyond the norm. That has been the case since 1965 and still remains the hallmark of the club. CEO Mark Penaluna leads by example and is not frightened to get his hands dirty and put in the hours to make the club a success off the field. He leads a very small but dedicated full time staff.
