Mayor Message from the

M

I

n 2015 a team of Wyndham City volunteers collected 2,040 stories about Wyndham. We asked what people like about Wyndham now and what they hope for Wyndham in the future. What we heard from our community was a strong desire to see growth in local employment opportunities that will assist greatly in reducing travel to work times so that families can spend more time with friends and relatives whilst engaging in community, recreation and leisure activities. From the Wyndham 2040 project we developed a Vision for Earning and Learning which in part states: “Our city will offer varied and plentiful local employment options. It will be a place of choice for businesses of all sizes and have a thriving network of small business operators.” It is fitting that we celebrate the contribution of our local business community, the critical linchpin in delivering this vision. Whilst the aim is to promote and celebrate individual business excellence, the Wyndham Business Awards are also very much about recognising the important place business holds in the development of a connected, passionate and sustainable community.

When added together the employment contribution of this year’s finalists alone is in excess of 1,400 jobs.

agnet Fishing Charters was founded by Jason Farrugia and his partner Julieann DeBrincat in 2011. This niche business operates from one of Wyndham’s ‘jewels in the crown’, Werribee South, taking advantage of the magnificent Port Phillip Bay. With a lifelong passion for boating and fishing, the owner operators recognised there was a gap in the market and established the business which runs chartered fishing trips most months of the year. Whether you are an avid fisherman or a novice, you are well catered for with Jason and Julieann’s aim to ensure you have the experience of a lifetime chasing the bay’s finest!

Tourism is an important growth industry for Wyndham and Magnet Fishing Charters adds an additional element of activity to the bay for locals and visitors alike. It is a business which invites people to immerse themselves in the natural environment, experience the glorious bay and recreate together. With plans to expand their operations in the near future, the business is noted for its honesty and integrity, welcoming people from all walks of life to sample one of Wyndham’s amazing tourism assets.

Businesses typically grow from humble beginnings after commencing as one and two person operations and in part we celebrate the importance of the development of new enterprises through the New and Emerging Category of the awards program. Equally important are those companies that invest in buildings and equipment to expand operations and grow local employment. By enabling the continued growth of business in Wyndham, employment opportunities will grow and we will get closer to realising our vision. Congratulations to all finalists and winners and thank you so much for your outstanding contribution to our great community. Cr Adele Hegedich Mayor

Franchise

Business Person Of The Year

MidAS SErvicE cENTrE WErribEE Midas is located at Pacific Werribee and was established in 2005. At that time, the goal for the business was quite simple – provide customers with an honest and trustworthy service. it sounds very basic but franchise owner carmel had experienced firsthand as a customer the effects of dishonesty in the industry and she was determined to try and change the perception of the trade from within. Over the years the business has achieved great success. it has built a solid customer base which is centred around the owner’s philosophy that ‘if the customer comes first, the business cannot fail’. Since opening its doors, the business has consistently exceeded targets resulting in the Werribee branch being named the number one Midas franchise in the country.

What the judges said:

dr KArEN dAviES Karen once heard someone say “if you don’t achieve your dreams, you didn’t want them enough”. Karen davies from a very young age had dreamed of becoming a vet. However, this bright young girl was told by others she would need to have a realistic backup plan because ‘it just would not be possible’. These negatve comments provided the catalyst for the determined young girl to pursue her dreams of becoming a vet. Educated at the then Werribee High School, Karen completed her degree at The University of Melbourne, concluding her studies at the Werribee campus to graduate as a veterinarian in the community in which she grew up.

a business which differentiates from the traditional ‘visit to the vet experience’ by offering caring, impartial advice with the responsibility and accountability of a local family business. Karen has a very keen desire to give back to the community. Offering student traineeships, work experience programs, sponsoring a number of community based foster care groups, along with football teams and youth development programs, in particular ‘troubled’ youth, are examples of Karen’s generous attitude. She is also heavily involved in the business community and an active member of business groups. The young girl from the west, educated in the public school system and told ‘she couldn’t do it’ - has done it. Well done Karen!

Midas Service centre Werribee is an outstanding franchise maintaining a leading position amongst its peers in victoria and amongst the top service centres nationally. it was a pleasure to meet carmel, understanding her passion, resilience, team orientation and absolute pride in the business performance over an extended period. All of these attributes ultimately driving their customer satisfaction achievements. A stand-out amongst a very strong franchise category.

Hard work, perseverance, passion and commitment saw the opening of direct vet Services in November 2010. Karen prides herself on operating

Priya indian Cuisine

negotis was born out of a desire to challenge the way that accounting and business advice had been previously delivered. The owners recognised that businesses and individuals want more from their accountant than the traditional ‘bean counter’ and were craving a proactve service, delivered by skilful people who adopted a genuine strategic partner approach. Owners Kim deneys, ron holman and amanda newton built negotis from two separate businesses, combining the strengths of two existing practices together to create a whole new paradigm in the traditional accounting and tax space. For negotis, it’s not just about the numbers. Their philosophy is small businesses need an ally - someone in the trenches with them, keeping them motivated and focussed, delivering the weapons they need to reach their goals.

Wyndham Veterinary Clinic was founded by dr John Watts and with great excitement, he opened the doors for the first time in november 2000. When dr Watts had the vision to open the clinic, he thought carefully about what the community would need from a neighbourhood veterinary clinic. living and working locally, he recognised there was a need to provide a level of veterinary care where clients could have their pets seen to and importantly, their ongoing care was possible due to the economical level at which this service provision was made ensuring accessibility.

after working as an employee in the industry for more than 10 years, Balkrishan resigned and took a leap of faith to begin a journey that has resulted in the success that Priya indian Cuisine is today. Balkrishan opened his first restaurant in sydenham in 2004. due to his hard work and dedication the business enjoyed success and subsequently expanded into Wyndham, opening a restaurant in 2009 in Point Cook. a family owned and operated business, an importance is placed on bringing the essence of india to life in all aspects of their restaurant operations which extends to the interior design. Priya indian Cuisine was the recipient of the ‘Best in the West’ ieC spice Out awards 2015 in the Food, service and ambience categories and also received the coveted Gold service award in the 2015 australian Business Choice awards.

dr Watts prides himself on providing excellence in veterinary care, thus he designed and created the clinic, building it from a small house in Market road to the profitable large veterinary hospital it is today. With a bright future ahead, Wyndham Vet Clinic are equipped with modern and spacious facilities.

What the judges said:

What the judges said:

What the judges said:

The judges walked out of negotis saying “we want these guys to be our accountants”! The wow factor and energy at negotis is palpable. The directors draw on broad experience and resources to provide a holistic approach for their clients and the community, and are committed personally and as a company to both. They are passionate, make accounting fun and are not spreadsheet focused desk bound number crunchers. That is, they come to you, physically look at your business and get to know what you do. Being a polished operation the negotis team have a balanced dynamic of age, experience and youth and have the courage and enthusiasm to make dynamic changes in their industry for the better.

retaining over 40 part and full time staff and with a demonstrated commitment to employing multiple nursing trainees and providing veterinary surgeon student placements each year, Wyndham Veterinary Clinic is at the forefront of animal reproductive and artificial insemination science in australia. its novel ‘no charge revisit consultation’ practice means clients can bring their animal back for post-treatment follow-up without any additonal cost. With an annual cliental of over 20,000 with more than 46,000 pets per annum, being one of a relative handful of veterinary practices with a CaT scan machine to perform cross-sectional tomographic images on animals, the impressive capital expenditure invested in this practice and the socioeconomic benefits it provides to the community makes it a valuable asset to Wyndham.

a real passion to bring the various favours of india into the Western suburbs was clearly evident from this local family business. The owners and staff ave an enormous passion for food and the enjoyment it brings to the local community – it’s not just a restaurant but more of an experience for guests. There is a clear vision for expansion and real direction for the business to lead the favours of india in the West of Melbourne.

The Reliance staff would like to thank all our clients for their contribution towards our ongoing growth and success.
