Balaklava tourist route Category: final master’s work Location: Balaklavsky district, Sevastopol, Crimea* Scientific supervisors: member of the London Architectural Association, professor Oscar Mamleev, docent Natalia Bunkina Year: 2017-2018 As the historical analysis of the territory shows, the surroundings of Balaklava, due to their strategically convenient position, were repeatedly subjected to military attacks. Military operations were carried out on this territory during the invasion of the Ottoman Empire, the First Russian-Turkish War, the Crimean War, the First World War, the Great Patriotic War, and active preparatory activities were carried out during the Cold War. All these actions left a mark both in the memory of people and in the landscape.

4

*In connection with the war in Ukraine, I will explain the choice of territory for master’s work. Half of my family are Crimeans, my father was born and raised in Crimea, when it was still part of the USSR, and I spent most of my childhood in the Ukrainian Crimea, although I was born in Moscow.

The tourist route is located on the site to the east of the city of Balaklava. The trajectory of the route is built according to the ring type, the beginning and end of the route coincide and are located near the historical center of the city of Balaklava. The total length of the developed route is 11.4 km. Two variants of the shortened route, 7 and 9.2 km long, were laid down, in which the most difficult sections of the long route were excluded. Throughout the route, there are 17 tourist sites, these are observation platforms, recreation areas, bridges, cafes, museum centers, an information center and reconstructed historical and military sites. The main part of the route operates in the summer and off-season and is closed for the winter season, but the museum, which is located on the outskirts of the city of Balaklava, and the Cembalo fortress, can be open to the public all year round.

MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF BALAKLAVA The museum building being designed from the outside is as impersonal as possible. The bulk of the building goes uphill. Outside, viewers can see only one facade coming out of the mountain, made of glass and concrete. The roof section emerging from the mountain is exploited and landscaped with the same plants as the surroundings, therefore visually it is a continuation of the natural landscape with integrated skylights.

RECONSTRUCTION OF THE GENOESE FORTRESS outer shell perforated corten sheets

According to the project, a core-ladder and mesh shell structure made of Corten steel is inserted into the volume of the tower. Thanks to it, the visitor can enter and climb the main space of the tower, see the archaeological layers and view the landscape from the upper level of the tower, which was previously inaccessible to him.

Settlement and foundation of the city

Railroad and World War II

Gazprom and industrial development

The most ancient finds on the territory of the settlement date back to the first half of the 1st millennium AD. It is officially accepted that 1401 is the year of the first mention of the city of Maloyaroslavets in a historical document. The fortress, which later became a city, could have been rebuilt (or fortified) in 1389. Then the new town was named Yaroslavets (in honor of the son of Prince Vladimir Andreevich).

In 1571, the raid of the Crimean Tatars almost completely destroyed the city, only a few courtyards remained in it. By the end of the 17th century, Yaroslavets Maly was rebuilt and even somewhat expanded its borders. During the reign of Catherine the Great, at the end of the 18th century, Maly Yaroslavets was heavily rebuilt. Then the famous battle of October 12, 1812 again destroyed it almost completely.

The city, which was rebuilt by the middle of the 19th century, was completely different from the former Maly Yaroslavets, as the people of the 18th century saw it. But the city temples stood approximately in the same places as now. The main roads connecting Yaroslavets with Kaluga, Borovsk and Medyn passed in the same place where we see them on the maps of the 19th century. In 1899, a railway was laid through the city and the city received a new milestone in development and began to grow towards the railway line. In 1941 (October 18) the city was occupied by the troops of Nazi Germany. Maloyaroslavets was completely liberated on January 2, 1942, but the fighting in the city continued for some time. The city is destroyed by at least one third.

Between 1992 and 1996, Gazprom invested more than $700 million in Maloyaroslavets. As a result, the Agrisovgaz industrial complex was erected in a short time, including factories: aluminum and steel structures, subsidiaries Stroykomplektservis, Agrigazteplitsa, Gazservis, Agrigazavtoservis, Gazpromstroyteplitsa. In parallel with the construction of enterprises, Gazprom erected on the land of the rural settlement of Maklino a fundamentally new residential microdistrict for 7.2 thousand inhabitants in terms of technologies, materials used, design and comfort. The new microdistrict was populated by gas industry workers, industry pensioners, workers from newly built enterprises, as well as many indigenous townspeople.

Portfolio / Stasy Belenko

In the competition proposal, we will look for authentic sounding metal panels that symbolize the water ripples of historically existing Ponds, as well as tiles with thematic symbols that are identical to the place, such as the cherry variety bred here and named after Zagorye. Even 100 years ago, Zagorye was a cozy village, a country estate, owned by one or other owners. The Institute of Horticulture (now the Federal Horticultural Center for Breeding, Agrotechnology and Nursety) brought urban development here after it. The Mayak Zagorya apple tree, the Zagoryevskaya and Lebedyanskaya cherries, the Beauty Zagorya strawberry are just some of the varieties bred by this institute. In our concept, we propose to preserve the feeling of a garden and rusticity. The main accents of the station will be tiles with fruit motifs, which are responsible for the identity and recognition of the station. In the future, this technique with tiles can be replicated to other stations, replacing their color and thematic solution. On the ceiling are used glossy textured metal panels, which are quite common in exterior decoration, but have never been used in the Moscow metro. They convey the feeling of ripples on the pond, and the vertical lamps convey the light from the verticals of the stairwells of the panel houses standing on the shore. Visually they create an unusual effect of reflection, distorting and enlarging the space.
