Royal College of Art meets the Constitute and Zentrum für Literatur (tbc)
Humans are (unstrict) algorithms: they respond to external influences according to prefabricated patterns, to impressions as well as Neurotransmitters. Professor Kevin Walker of Royal College of Arts developed the principle of de-computation: Here, “making” is conceived as thinking and in four steps any arbitrary object or process can be decomposed and then be converted into something new. Instead of developing artworks or products from scratch, the Decomputation Workshop is taking on a design challenge at the interection of humans, machines and emotions. What are the inscribed encodings? And how can one dissolve them?
In the evening, the Pop-Up Venue will be opened op to the public- for a panel discussion between workshop participants and artists/scientists from the design fiction field. How to imagine future? And is it of any help to make progress tangible and senseable? What progress can be observed in the area of emotions and artificial intelligence? And where else does one find “sentimental machines”?

During the “Open Lab Day”, the PopUpLabor is open to the public to introduce co-cre ations, creatives and last but not least the Reallabor itself. Prototypes will be displayed, there will be the opportunity to tackle design challenges collaboratively. In addition: a look into the future with the Magic Realism Bot and related AI, enhanced chatting about the future of Art + Science.
Music, drinks and entertainment set a popcultural finale to the PopUpLab-week. In Lab Setup people have the chance to network with all kinds of Art/Science communities and already have a taste of STATE Festival at Kühlhaus. Some exhibits and Lab members will resettle to Kühlhaus for. There will be performances, robot music (all tbc) and a very special bar service. STATE TUNED!
OUTLOOK PopUpLab will be continued at STATE festival: On the workshop+interactive-floor with the students of Royal College of Art and in the exhibition-programme with Jonathon Keats. Check the website for more information.
Thinking with your hands, developing tacit knowledge and actively prototyping possible futures is the purpose of Futurium’s Reallabor. The mobile lab enjoys a series of nomadic residencies until it moves into a museum space in 2017: from 25– 29th October it will guest as part of STATEs Partner Program in a specially designed space in Bülowstraße 90. Hands-on workshops are on the agenda, along with panels and installations. Epilogue to follow on the festivals’ site.

Jonathon Keats meets Zentrum for Literatur and Excellence-Cluster Bild-Wissen-Gestaltung (tbc)
You are a scientist working on a wicked problem for which there is no clear solution. Look no further. An innovative approach to system dynamics leads directly through your alimentary canal and into our pop-up laboratory. San Francisco-based artist and philosopher Jonathon Keats has developed the concept of “data gastronification”, an alternative to visualization in which feedback loops can literally be consumed. Gastronified research is processed by the enteric nervous system – a sort of small brain in the abdomen – resulting in alternate modes of insight and understanding.
At Futurium PopUp Lab scientists have been working on reformulate their complex research into edibles. Problems for which there are no simple solutions, are being made digestible – and legible: for our enteric system. The accompanying panel keeps its focus on how to process theory in general. How does knowledge consist itself, and what role do emotions play in this process? Our guests work at the interface of art, science and neuropsychology and highlight the challenges (re) interpretation of the world, reason and intuition.
Researching the “imaginable” of the future isn’t as much looking into the void of the oracle but rather systematic and data-based recording of trends and scenarios. The presents builds strong pillars for any kind of future, fictional or critical design. If you know how to do it! The Foresight Workshop provides a handson introduction to the methodology of future research for scientists and other creators who are interested in tomorrow. Guided by foresight experts, hypotheses, morphological methods and future storytelling can be tried out here.
