DEDIUATION

MR. WIIBERT R. BOLTON

We, the class of 1955, take sincere pride in dedicating our yearbook toMr. Wilbert R. Bolton, who has spent nine years of his energetic life in bettering our school. Much of his work has been devoted to our athletic program which now compares with t he best in the state. As a teacher and friend he has spent innumerable hours helping us in classwork, athletics, and other problems. The Iikeable 'Yib" was born and raised in Sunbury, PennS)tlvania. He received his Bachelor's degree from Albright College and his Master's from Bucknel I. His free time is used for working toward his Doctor's degree at Penn State. He taught at Sunbury and Northumberland High Schools before coming to State High in 1946. Throughout his school daysF 11 Yib 11 gained an outstanding reputation as an athlete. Mr. Bolton came to State High as football and track coach. He is no longer football coach but remains at the helm oftrack. With his traditional 11 bullwhip", thisfirnecoachhaschasedhistrack team into six consecutive undefeated seasons. As Director of Athletics, he has helped pull the school out of debt in addition to improving our athletic program. He is a registered P.I.A.A. basketball official. As a very active member of the faculty, Mr. Bolton has a fine reputation as a teacher. In biology, his booming voice reminded us to define "a couple two, three words" for our next assignment. With twinkling eyes and a burning desire to argue, he started many a fracas in class. The familiar, "Now, what'd I say?" encouraged many discussions in science class. In senior science, we also enjoyed his beaming personality. Because of his teaching many people have left this school with a fine background for college. With so many activities, Mr. Bolton leads a vigorous and sometimes overworked existence. But his satisfactions lie in hard work, achievement, and helping others. So, with sincere admiration the class of 1 55 salutes you, Mr. Bolton, and we wish you success and happiness in the years to come.

IN MEMORIAM

Nancy Krumrine

Looking back to our high school days, we recall many special events, our teachers, and most of a 11 our friends. We remember one who shared many experiences with us, but for too short a t ime. Here we pause, and for a moment meditate in memory of Nancy Krumrine, who died May l, 1954. "Krummie" attended the College Heights School for six years and in seventh grade entered the State College High School . Her sophomore year she attended Linden Ha II School for G iris and returned to our high school the fol lowing year. Ncmcywas an honor student, active inACappellaChoir, Student Council, and various girls sports.

The road of Iife stretches out before us as we close the gate to our high school days. Each footprint on that road signi fies a step toward success and happiness . In striving to reach that goal, we have completed a major portion of our educational, cultural, and social developement. Between the covers of th!:) 1955 Maroon and Gray, there is an i Ilustrated _review of the life of a student at State College High School, As time passes, we hope that this book will be= come a cherished collection of unforgettable memories . The gate has closed now, and locked behind it are six years of preparation for tomorrow's world, As we step forward to face the future, we kn~w that our task is not fin ish~_d . • • • it has just begun!

Although we don't hear very much about the school board in the ha Ils of State High,路 it is one of the most imp.ortant functions in our institution. The school board looks over State High and the College Area Joint Schools like a guardian angel, taking care of all the administrative headaches and problems. The school board is composed of six school districts, which are St ate Co 11 e g e Borough, College Township, Ferguson Township, Ha If-Moon Township, Harris, Township, and Patton Township. There are five members from each outlying district and seven from the borough. We are certainly grateful to this group of fine citizens for their support and interest in State High.

CLASS Believe it or not I It seems like a few short years since we confident seniors entered the College Area Joint Schools as 7th graders. Our Junior High days were exciting and carefree as we embarked on six years adventure toward success. During the first few months as newcomers to State High, we stole a real glimpse of our novel school. A11 of our opportunities were introduced to us: canteen at the Methodist gym every Saturday evening, junior high band, sports, school clubs (including dancing, dramatics, hunting, and fishing, etc.) and cheer leading. Our junior high cheerleaders were Jackie Beck, Jane Atchison, and Nancy Hutchison. The sports program offered the boys basketball, football, and wrestling. Carl Houtz wrestled with the varsity team at 103 pounds when he was a freshman. The activities at Pine Grove were many, consisting of cheer leading by Pat Peters and Janet Dreibelbis. A dance was held and the proceeds helped to finance the annual trip to Hershey Park, The majority of the school asked for better cafeteria meals. Without receiving them, to keep with the workers of the world, it resulted in a "food strike." Bev Dodd better known then as John L. Lewis, was the instigator, and everyone carried his lunch until better meals were provided. Lemont scholars joined State High in eighth grade and soon became one of the gang. The first day of girls' noon basketball brought out our bashfulness as we slowly walked on the gym floor in our shorts trying to hide our piano leg-shaped limbs from the whistling boys. But soon we lost our modesty and insisted upon playing the whole game. One of our seventh grade English classes, sponsored by Miss Ball, practiced, prepared, and presented a play to junior high. The disappointed class realized it was literally a flop, but the audience thoroughly enjoyed it. (Speaking about laughs, how about that hike across the golf course at 3:00 A.M., "Sacky" and Steve?) Mr. Maurey, our science teacher, took us on many field trips out to Community field and once he took us to the Pearce Milk Company. While we watched with amazement the process of filling milk bottles, there was an accident. Some filled bottles broke and milk drenched the closest bystander who happened to be Sue Shawley. She had a rough time explaining the incident when she got back to school. Ed Trembley and Phyllis Heil from State High and Pat Peters and Dean Witherite from Pine Grove won the American Legion awards. Ed was also our junior high student council president. We were freshmen now with more and more opportunities coming our way. We went to the mixers and if we were lucky, danced with that good looking upperclassman. We went to junior district chorus and band, and the ninth grade choir assisted the admired A Cappella Choir in their Christmas and spring concerts. Joyce Gilbert and Sue Shawley were our first G. A. A. representatives elected that same year. One particular day was chosen to be Hopalong Cassidy day. Everyone wore his ten gallon hat and guns. Jane Bickle looked more like a cowboy than Hoppy ever did.

HISTORY The following year was one of the best in our young lives. The class was joined by Pine Grove students and together we became members of senior high. Many participated in the band and we were really proud of our uniforms. The most difficult task was to be able to keep in step. Poor Abie never did learn. Other activities were A Cappella, Religious Education, girls' intramural sports, plays and various clubs. The football team worked their hearts out trying to be undefeated because Coach Porter promised them each a car if they won every game. THIS is yet to be accomplished. We in Mr. Van Norman's English class remember going to the Tyrone Paper Mill. Everyone brought back rolls of paper and samples of each stage of the pulp. New cheerleaders were chosen and they were Carol Ehman and Judy McGarey. This was our first year to elect class officers. Bob Campbell, one of the respected members of the three-thirds, was president. The girls' dream man, Dean Witherite, became vice president. For secretary we elected Judy Peery and our treasurer was Clem Schoenebeck another of the three-thirds. The remaining third was Ed Trembley ,our all school treasurer. The three-thirds sang and entertained at many outside affairs as well as school events. They will always be remembered for their harmony and wit. (Would "Sacky", Steve, and "Keith" remember anything of the whereabouts of some Latin II books?) Phoebe Humphrey and Jane Eberly were our new representatives to G. A. A.

¡â€˘

Although sponsoring a dance was new to us there was never a better dance than the Soph Hopi "It Happens Every Spring." The silhouette of young lovers, the real fountain and flowers added a touch of authenticity to be remembered by all who attended. Another dance we held that year was 'Icicle Frolic' planned by the girls who didn't waste any time choosing their dates. We ended our Sophomore year with a class picnic. We all laughed when the boys threw Mr. Van Norman into the nice cool water for a little swim. Karin DeJuhasz and Joy Davis were two of the many classmates who left us before our Junior year. We were almost at the end of our long trudging trip as we took on the title of 'juniors'. Our new officers were president, Ed Trembly; vice president, Clem Schoenebeck; secretary, Phoebe Humphrey, die class's only true blond and treasurer, Larry Perez with his Brooklyn accent. Judy Peery was all school secretary. This year Joyce Gilbert and Jennifer Brown becam~ members of "Ten Tones" and Bob Campbell and Bill Shannon took part in "Polka Dots". . The band went to several away games. The one we '11 .remember is the Lewistown game where we had to turn back because of the snow. Perhaps this was well for we forgot to take the drums along. The game went on in spite of the snow and State won 7-0. The snow was a foot deep continued on page 22

IJLASS by the next morning which hindered Band Day at the University but they played ball anyway. Our Christmas dance, 'Holiday Heaven', also proved to be a huge success. "Opening Night", "Wildcat Willy and the Bearded Lady", and "The Long Retreat" were presented as the junior plays. The cast had a roaring party at Mccown 's house later. "Club 55," the junior talent show was created by our class and we hope it will be continued throughout the years. Bob Schrack and his Orchestra played the star role in the night club setting. "The Humseys" who are Phoebe and Ann Henszey won second prize. Other actors from our class were the "Three-Thirds" and Bob Weigand, Joe Mccown and Dick Harbold. our Junior Prom, "Pagoda Paradise," took great preparations. Decorations were worked upon months befor~ the dance and the gym was not ready ten minutes before time to start. Nevertheless, all went well. The famous 'Uke Club', organized by uke lovers met once a week to sing, eat and have a merry time. Our favorite pastimes this year were cabin parties and overnights. What were those noises heard in Dodd 's cabin? Not to mention the terrific evenings spent at Hutch's, Noll's .• Ehman 's, Fitz's, Canouse 's, Nelson 's, Brown's, Rickard's, and McGarey's. The overnight at Homan 's consisted of much activity as a football game took place by the sleepers at 3:00 A. M. on the middle of the road. The road inearlymorningseems tohave a drawing power, for .some other P.J. walkers were out inCollegeHeights. Was that you Bryna, Elsie, Pauline, and Natalie? One of the fads was knee socks and bermuda shorts. Ann Wills was elected to serve on the G. A. A. board . This past summer found Sally Spencer, Joe Mccown and Don Hamett in Europe getting lost in Paris and talking to themselves because they couldn't speak German. They returned with many interesting tales. Paul, Clem, and Ed went to the Keystone Boy's Camp sponsored by the American Legion. Ed also attended the Student Council Convention in Minnesota. Jane Eberly received the Elmira Key Award and 17 ofour classmates earned the A. A. U. W. Award. Leaving our class this year were Judy Peery and Judy Billings along with many others. Canteen became known as Y. C. (Youth Club) and was held in the school gym. Finally came the greatest thrill of all. We were seniors. It didn't seem possible but we accepted the fact with joy. Immediately the Maroon and Gray staff got down to work, having meetings all summer, preparing for a year book of which we' 11 all be proud. With the opening of school all sorts of committees planned our year 's act1v1ues. The Piper staff also was on the job. To start off our elected class officers were president, Bill Farrell, the walking ¡ library; vicepresident, Don Hamett, the all around guy; secretary, Jane Eberly, with her never ending spirits ; and treasurer, Carol Ehman, our football queen of '54.

HISTORY We welcomed the new class members who were Rose Myers, Betty Lauck, Jim Wilson, and Henry Salembier, our exchange student from France. Janet Myers returned to our class after spending a year in Puerto Rico, The annual trip to the U. N. was taken by Joyce Gilbert, Phoebe Humphrey, Jane Eberly, Bob Moyer, and Clem Schoenebeck. In order for the business class to take their trip to New York, they took on many projects consisting of selling Christmas cards, selling refreshments at football games, sponsoring mixers, dances and nickle suppers. The FF A boys were an enthusiastic crowd who kept the school grounds trim, and among other things, went to the Farm Show at Harrisburg. On the bright afternoon of November l l, our school went to Bellefonte to watch State give the Raiders a run for their money in the kettle game. Although we lost by a score of 26- 19, we are proud of our team and our school. Good luck to next year's Little Lions! The senior alumni dance entitled "Rue Cinquante Cinq, " French for 55th Street, was the first dance of the year. The Thespian play, "A Form Divine", under the direction of Mr. Shaffer, gave an enjoyable evening to the audience as well as the .eager cast. A second verse to the school alma mater was written to fit the new arrangement of the music. These were the kinds and types of footprints making impressions on our long road. Some are so imbedded that they can never disappear, and others are in sight for a short time but will gradually fade. To the graduating class of 1955, this road has been long, mysterious, and full of lingering memories. As we walk slowly up the diploma line, we realize that life, itself, is before us, and the challenge and promise it holds are ours. We say farewell to State High, and "to our Alma Mater fair; we pledge all our lives for aye."

TEN TONES AN DPOLKA DOTS The Ten Tones and Polka Dots are two small singing groups chosen from the A Cappel la Choir. The members are selected each year, early in the fall, at tryouts conducted by Mr. Thorne and the previous members of each organization. The Ten Tones include six sopranos and four altos, while the Polka Dots consist of four tenors and four basses. Both groups sing at the two choir concerts and other functions. This year they provided entertainment for the PSPA conference held in State College in October. Senior members of both groups sang together at the Class Day exercises.

Each year there is color and excitement in the hall of State High when the lucky persons, who have earned enough credits through their hard and loyal work and hdve taken the oath to uphold the high standards of Thespians, are formally initiated into this active organization. Another highlight of the group is the annual play they sponser each fall. Anyone in senior high may try out for a part and this earn credits toward becoming a member.

FOOTBALL 19~4 STATE HIGH-18 MOSHANNON-12 The Little Lions looked good on their opening game with Moshannon Area Joint High School. Moshannon got off to a fast start, scoring in the first six minutes of the first quarter, but State came back with Dick Stine tieing it up from the one yard line. Dean Witherite set up the 2nd Lion tally with a dazzling 48 yard run, and the last State T. D. came on a long pass from John Pierce to Dick Foster. Moshannon scored again in the middle of the 4th quarter. STATE-6 LOCK HAVEN-38 A strong Bison team downed State High for their first defeat of the season. Early in the first quarter, Crisman made the first Lock Haven toughdown. Then the Little Lions started a drive with three first downs in a row, but the fire was soon put out, and the Bi sons romped on to victory. Paul Gibson scored State's only T.D. STA TE-0 HOLLIDAYSBURG-33 State played a better 路game than the score shows, as they encountered Hollidaysburg in one of their roughest battles of the season. The Lions came very close to scoring in the second quarter when Dick Foster punted and the Tigers fumbled the ball. State recovered, but on the next play they bobbled the ba 11, and Hollidaysburg went on to shut out the Lions, 33-0. STATE-19 CLEA RF IE LD-12 For the first time in 8 years, the Maroon Club roared over the Clearfield Bisons for a 19-12 upset. Sweetland scored the first tally and Paul Gibson went over for the next two State T. D. 1s. The Lions carried the entire tussle, capturing their second win of the season. 路STATE-12 LEWISTOWN-40 State held the Panthers unti I early in the second ha If when Lewistown recovered their own punt on State's 25. Six plays later, the Panthers took the lead and they racked up two more ta I lies before the gun sounded ending the game.

FOOTBALL 1954 STATE-12 CHIEF LOGAN-25 The Lions led the game after three quarters of pla 1 , but a last period surge by the Mingoes defeated the visitors. Dick Stine scored two T. D. 's for the Maroon Club, but Chief Logan went the distance up the middle to tie it up. Two more quick tallies by the home team put the game in thei( hands. STATE-9 PHIUPSBURG-13 A strong second ha If attack by Philipsburg sent State High down to their fifth defeat. The first play after a scoreless first half, Philipsburg fumbled the ball and Gene Lower recovered for a State T .D. Philipsburg came back with two touchdowns and State fol lowed with a safety to make the fi na I 13-9. STA TE-26 TYRONE-20 After trailing for more than three quarters, State laid down a fourth period aerial barrage to go with a stiff defense when it counted. With the statistics as close as the score, the Lions' quarterback John Pierce passed to Dick Foster to set up State's winning T.D. . STATE-19 BELLEFONTE-26 The traditional iron kettle game between State High and Bellefonte proved to be one of the most exciting tussles in years. The Little Lions immediately started a drive after the kick off which took them down to .the Raider one-yard line. Then Bellefonte in possession of the ball quickly racked up their first T.D. State bounced back and Ed Bohn went over to tie it up. Bellefonte tallied again, but a pass from Dick Stine to Dick Foster set up another Lion score. Later in the game, a recovered fumble by Jim Crust led to the final State tally, made by Jim Wi Ison, who rammed over from the one yard line.

Close seconds were Bob Addleman andClemSchoenebeck with three goals apiece. Othertimelygoals were scored by Ron Schilling, Ben Henszey, and Dick Hassinger. Throughout the year fine defensive work was turned in by goalies Bill Shannon, Dick Hassinger, Dave Holler, and Ron Schilling. The Tiffany brothers were also sta Iwarts on defense. The Lions were given a fine representation on the All-County team selected at the end of the season. Joe Carter and Ben Henszey were elected to the first team, and honorable mentions were given to Everett Tiffany, Clem Schoenebeck and Dick Hassinger.

The Little Lion Matmen closed the 1954-55 campaign with one win and eight losses. The opposition proved too tough for State's inexperienced wrestlers. This was the first season for Coach Corman and those who observed the Lion's action agree that in a year or two the results wi 11 be in State's favor. Although weak in the heavier weights, States' 95 pounder Jim Byers and 103 pounder Harry Houtz lost only one match during the entire season. At the District Wrestling Tournament held at Lock Haven State Teachers College March 4 and 5 seven State mat men made the quarter-fl na Is. However, on Iy Jim Byers and Harry Houtz could place 3rd and 4th respectively.

State High 1s basketbal I squad captured the Central state League trophy by a 9-1 record in league competition. Coach Hal Griffith's basketeers proved to be one of the finest teams assembled at State for many years. This year's team was well balanced with lettermen, and newcomers who wi 11 contribute much in the future. Getting off to a slow start, the Lions lost to Lewistown and Centre Hal I in non-league games. The turning point toward a successful season was probably the hard fought 51-48 victory over Hollidaysburg. As league competition opened, State dropped the famous 47-46 contest to Bellefonte. Determined to be victorious, State began its long winning streak by defeating Lock Haven and Jersey Shore. Consistent rebounding and scoring by Big Paul Sweetland helped keep the team's winning streak intact until State met a red-hot Altoona team in the District playoffsThroughout the season, Sweetland was the star. Seniors Don Harnett and Dick Hassinger backed him up with fine teamwork and good scoring ability. Harry Beans proved to be a sparkplug all year long. Dick Stine and Dave Holler proved to be fine backcourt men and will help the team next year. George Moore, another junior, and sophomore John Pierce contributed to the team effort. Griffith will be counting heavily on these underclassmen for a repeat performance next year.

FIRST ROW - Tiffany, Henszey, Rutherford, G. Smith, Bohn, Meyers. SECOND ROW - M. Smith, J. Jones, Altimus , Norviel, Harbold, Schoenebeck, Fry.

JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Coach Skip Glenn's J. V. team enjoyed an undefeated season, and displayed fine talent for future varsity competition. The Lion Cubs started off with a 36-33 thri Iler over Lewistown and continued their streak for the remainder of the year. Paced by lanky Glenn Smith, the reserves ran up some overwhelming scores such as the 68-25 triumph over Lock Haven. Bob Rutherford and Ben Henszey consistently aided Smith in the scoring department, while Ed Bohn proved to be a dependable playmaker and backcourt man. Fine improvement was evident in the play of Jinx Fry as he won a starting berth halfway through the season. George Meyers rebounded dependably for Coach Glenn's squad. In league competition State was untouched. Fine teamwork and scoring abi Iity ranked our J. V. 's far above the other league teams. This fine group of sophomores wi 11 be worth watching in the future.

TRACK For the past six seasons, the State High Cindermen have been undefeated. At the close of their 1954 campaign, the team won the Central Counties' Tournament and the relay team placed third in the Penn Relays at Philadelphia. Coach Bolton faced the 1955 season with returning lettermen, Clem Schoenebeck, Dick Hassinger, Dave Lee, Jim Bathurst, and Joe Carter. The Boltonmen had eight home meets this season, plus entries in the Penn Relays, District and State meets.

BASEBALL Filling the shoes of States' baseball players who have graduated, were returning lettermen Dick Stine, Dick Foster, Dean Witherite, Jim Gibboney, Bill Rishel, and Bill Shannon. Coach Hanna ended the 1954 campaign with a 4-4 record, winning over Lock Haven, Philipsburg, Clearfield, and Bellefonte.

TENN IS Because tennis is a recently -revived sport in State High 1s program, the Athletic Association has had difficulty scheduling meets. Most schools in this area do not offer the sport. However, State played Carson Long Academy and the Penn State Freshmen this year. The squad was sparked by standouts Don Harnett and John Kra 11, who won the district meet, and entered the states at the close of the 1954 season.

GOLF The Little Lions golf team closed the 1954 season with a 6-2 record, losing two matches to Philipsburg. Dave Holler was last years I district champion. This spring, returning golfers were Don O 1 Bryan, Bob Campbel I, Paul Cryder, Stu Bischoff, Bill Kennedy, Clyde Thomas, and Dave Holler. The 1955 schedule included Clearfield, Philipsburg, Lewistown, and Wi I liomsport.

GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOUIATION The Girls' Athletic Association is made up of all senior high girls having A. A. tickets. The Girls' Athletic Board is the governing body of all girls' sports. The members are chosen by their classmates at the end of each school term on their ability to be good leaders and sportsmen. They serve as representatives from their classes. There are two freshmen, four sophomores, five juniors, and six seniors for a tota I of 17. Not only does the board regulate the extra-curricular sports, but it also sponsors a football mixer for its initiates and in the spring a sports banquet, at which awards are presented and new officers are installed. This year's officers are President, Joyce Gilbert; Vice- President and Student Counci I Representative, Phoebe Humphrey; Secretary, Suzi Reen; Treasurer, Mardi Harnett. Mrs. Hami 11 and Mrs. Goodwin are the faculty advisors.

Girls' Leaders Club is an honorary athletic club for senior high girls. Each year new members are voted in because of their good sportsmanship, leadership and obi lity. During club periods the girls learn ski Ils, techniques, and rules of various games. They are given practice in refereeing so they can assist in physical education classes and after school sports. The aim of the club is to train girls to set examples of good sportsmanship and enable others to learn and understand games better. This year's officers are President, Sue Shawley; Vice - President and Student Council Representative, Shirley De Vinney; Secretary-Treasurer, Mimi St. Clair. Mrs. Hami 11 is the faculty advisor.

VARSITY路 BASKETBALL Immediately fol lowing the hockey season the sound of basketbal Is was resounding in the gym as eighty girls from the tenth, eleventh, .and twelfth grades worked hard for the honor of varsity team membership. After the final cuts the varsity squad was made up of twenty-four girls. Practice sessions were held as often as possible to earn plays and polish up on teamwork. The team got off to a good start by defeating the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority 32-36 in a practice game. Traveling to Bel lefonte's YMCA for their first offical game, they managed to stop a very tol~ team by the accurate shooting of Nancy Hutchison, Bev Nelson, and Liz Corman and the excellent guarding of Sue Shawley, Phoebe Humphrey, Mimi St. Clair, and Joyce Gilbert, Another practice game with the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority found State once more too overpowering, winning 42-24. With a 3-0 record they entered their Play Day games, held March 5th, with much enthusiasm. After watching their bitter rivals, Bellefonte and Shamokin battle it out, they in turn played Shamokin for a 49-30 victory and Bellefonte to the tune of 37-34, this ending the season with a perfect record. This was the first time in fiveyearsthat the State girls had beat Shamokin!

VOLLEYBALL Volleyball will replace hockey as a major sport in 1 55- 1 56. An experimental volleyball tournament, held this spring, proved to be successful. Class teams were choosen and played each other in a double round-robin tournament. Outstanding players included Joyce Gilbert, Sue Shawley, Betty Henszey, Susie Reen, Nancy Hutchison, Mimi St. Clari, Liz Corman, Jane Gauss, Bev Nelson, and Mardi Harnett.

BADMINTON With the approach of spring, birdies were found floating over the nets in fine style as the girls athletic season was fast drawing to a close. The tournament for advanced players was held first and then the beginners were given a chance to learn the fundamentals afterwards. Members of Leaders' Club assisted Mrs. Hamill and Mrs. Goodwin. Evelyn Wernham, runner-up in last years tournament played her usual outstanding game.
