Who are we? You have been seeing the above logo associated with more than one entity lately - these are all owned by Authentic Ag, Inc. On February 1, Authentic Ag, Inc., owned by Ken and Lori Rahjes will begin it’s seventh year. Our company started as a way to spend more time with family, and to be an alternative to the big, multi-platform ag communication companies. Our first project was AgView.net, a website dedicated to agriculture in the high plains region. We soon added a radio network that delivers daily ag information to local radio stations in Kansas and Nebraska. Two years ago, we had the opportunity to purchase and produce a weekly television program, Kansas Ag Report, which aires across the state of Kansas. Last September we purchased the Area Insight paper from Ginger Tweedy, re-branding it State Line Shopper. We believe this remains a viable marketplace for businesses and individuals to ewadvertise their goods and services for sale. State Line Shopper reaches over 15,000 homes on a weekly basis and we have appreciated the advertisers as well as all the supportive and kind words we’ve received from everyone. We are learning more about publishing with every issue and strive to get better every week. State Line Shopper is now available online at statelineshopper. com.

A full-line, independent insurance agency here to protect your livelihood.

Study Shows Farmers are Paying Higher Wages Than Ever Before Farm Journal recently conducted a study that encompassed all sectors of agriculture. What they found was farmers are paying more in wages than at any point in history. They’re more efficient in using their available labor. However, they’re still frustrated. The survey of more than 2,100 farmers included almost 200 dairy farmers. Of the total producers, 87 percent say they pay more in wages than they did five years ago. While 58 percent of the employers have offered higher wages to attract

labor, few can and do offer benefits. Just 20 percent of the farmers offer health insurance. Almost 45 percent offer their employees paid time off. A handful of the dairy farmers in the survey says they milk their cows with robotics. But,

the majority of the dairy farmers say milking help is the hardest position to both fill and retain employees. Employers’ biggest frustrations are those who show up late, don’t show up at all, or don’t follow protocols in place. They say the best employees have a sense of ownership, which is easier to say than to find.

2019 Squeezing Grain Elevators in Rural America CoBank says it isn’t just farmers that saw lower cash returns in 2019. Grain elevators will also see their profit margins drop compared to the previous year. The lower returns are blamed on a higher basis for corn, soybeans, and wheat. A release from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange Division says, “In addition to having to buy a more expensive basis,

grain elevators are offering farmers incentives to sell bushels, such as lower rates on storage, free delayed pricing, and free grain drying.” Lower quality and high-moisture grain coming in from wet fields around rural America also boost elevator costs. Propane shortages in 2019 also continued to put a damper on elevator revenue. As if that’s

January 6, 2020 not enough, drying wet grain can lead to commodity shrinkage, which adds to lost bushels and higher costs for elevators. CoBank says those challenges from 2019 will likely carry into the new year. “Grain elevators’ margins will get squeezed in 2020 by the tightness in basis, diminishing carries in the futures markets, and many other challenges from low test-weight and high-moisture grain,” CoBank says.

been on my mind. What will the 2020s have in common with the 1920s, and, more importantly, what can be learned from a decade that earned the moniker “roaring”? This curiosity led me to a brief internet refresher because the attributes filling my mind were all the “Great Gatsby.” My search revealed interesting facts and similarities to modern life in this gap between World War I and the Great Depression. Like today, there was a presidential election. Warren Harding’s successful campaign used the slogan “Return to Normalcy,” painting a nostalgic picture of life before WW I, which ended a year earlier. Harding called for politics that were, “not the dramatic, but the dispassionate” and for people to remember that “human ills are not curable by legislation … excess of government offer(s) no substitute for quality of citizenship.” President Harding was popular until scandals came to light after his death in 1923. The title roaring came from all of the excitement of the time. The economy was growing. New products like automobiles, moving pictures and radio brought

“modernity” to the masses. Social change was prevalent with women winning the right to vote in many states and national debates taking place about prohibition, immigration, political corruption and industrialization. It was the age of Gatsby with jazz, art deco, flappers and speakeasys. The decade has a larger than life zeitgeist. The Roaring Twenties had a definitive and halting end. All that prosperity and liveliness faded with the crash of the stock marketing in October of 1929 and a new era of hardship and scarcity in the Great Depression. Parallels exist between the two times. Politicians are human, and humans are fallible. Some people still yearn for normalcy, while others desire social and political change. Technology and the economy have points of great growth, but that will not last forever. My takeaway is simple. Spirit not circumstance can define people. Times will be both better and worse in my future. Be thankful for your current blessings and live life gregariously and fully at all times.

Why KDOT Uses Beet Juice; How It Works When KDOT crews treat highways for ice, especially when it is the coldest, motorists might notice darker trails on the pavement instead of the usual white trails left by brine. It’s beet juice. It tends to leave a brownish or grayish residue. Here’s why KDOT sometimes mixes beet juice with brine (saltwater) that it applies to roadways to melt ice or to slow its formation. --The properties of beet juice, when mixed with brine, allow the melting agent to be effective at lower temperatures. Based on the level of concentration, beet juice mixed with brine can help control ice when it is as cold as around 0 degrees. Beet juice also allows brine and salt to adhere to pavement longer. On bridges, which tend to get icy, beet juice bonds to the salt crystals in brine and helps the brine stick to a bridge deck longer, says Jim Frye, Field Maintenance Manager/Emergency Coordinator with KDOT. Another beetjuice benefit, says District Five District Engineer

Brent Terstriep, is that when beet juice is added to brine, the combination makes ice-fighting more efficient because crews don’t have to drive out as often to apply brine. Frye gave this additional explanation of how beet juice works and how it has been used: --As moisture on pavement starts to freeze, the juice slows the process so that the liquid remains slushy longer. That gives crews more time to clear highways before the liquid turns to solid ice. --One problem with spreading salt or spraying salt brine on a highway is that it will bounce away or scatter with traffic or the wind. “When the beet juice is added to the salt or salt brine, with its sticky texture, it will hold the salt or salt crystals on the highway longer, allowing it to work in our favor,” Frye said. KDOT began experimenting with the beet juice it uses now during the winter of 2015 in northwestern Kansas. Since then, KDOT has made beet juice available at more than 20 locations across Kansas.

Trump Will Sign Phase One Deal January 15 President Donald Trump put a date on signing the Phase One trade deal with China, thanks to Twitter. He’ll sign the deal with China on January 15, making the agreement between the two largest economies official. The highlight of the deal that’s most interesting to agriculture is China will increase its purchases of U.S. agricultural products in exchange for the U.S. lowering tariffs on some of its imports. “The ceremony will take place at the White House,” Trump says on Twitter. “High-level representatives of China will be present.” In addition to the ag purchases, China agreed to new commitments

on intellectual property protections, forced technology transfers from U.S. companies, as well as new currency practices. Bloomberg says the deal will calm some of the fears that the trade war between the nations would continue long term. The president also says he’ll be traveling to Beijing at a later date to begin Phase Two negotiations. The precise details of the agreement haven’t been released to the public yet. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says the details will come out when it’s officially signed by both countries.
