Farm Land Market Continued Plateau in 2019 The land market in 2019 continued the plateau trend of the past several years, where the supply of agricultural land for sale on the market remained lower than average, and prices for good quality cropland held mostly steady. Farmers National Company says farmland sale activity in the first part of 2019 was slower than it had been for some time with late spring and early summer, especially void of farms for sale. Planting delays and prevent plantings contributed to the sluggish activity. How-

ever, despite the slower land market, Farmers National Company and its agents saw a 25 percent increase in acres sold in 2019 from the prior year and the most since 2014. Several factors will impact the 2020 land market, according to Randy Dickhut of Farmers National. He says Interest rates are low and are poised to remain so during the foreseeable future. Overall, he says, "agriculture is in adequate financial shape, but there are individual and regional concerns."

Kansas Rancher Named Beef Advocate of the Year

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA), a contractor to the Beef Checkoff, has selected Brandi Buzzard Frobose, blogger, Kansas rancher and influencer, as the 2019 Advocate of the Year. This honor is given annually to an outstanding Masters of Beef Advocacy (MBA) program graduate to recognize his or her success in reaching and educating consumers who want to learn more about beef and raising cattle. MBA is a Checkoff-funded program designed to equip advocates with the training, knowledge, and experience to advance their advocacy efforts as spokespeople for the industry. In addition to being a

mom to 3-year old Oakley and co-owner of High Bar Cattle Company with her husband, Hyatt, near Greeley, Kansas, Buzzard Frobose is a full-time beef industry communications professional. As busy as she may be, Brandi still finds time to connect with consumers by honestly and transparently sharing information about beef's great taste, unbeatable nutrition and the hardworking farmers and ranchers who produce it through her online social media platforms and blog. Brandi's interest in and passion for the beef industry was ingrained in her at a young age as she tagged along with her dad and grandpa at feedlots, roping, and working with her cattle and hogs for the local fair. As an exemplary advo-

cate, Buzzard Frobose enjoys giving her fans and followers a glimpse into her life as a rancher and mom. She also frequently shares tasty beef recipes and candid perspectives on current beef events through her blog, Buzzard's Beat, and across her social media channels. Her "door" is always open for people to ask questions. Brandi uses social media as a way of connecting, sharing and inspiring others about life on the ranch and raising cattle. Buzzard Frobose started blogging in 2009, and since then has elevated her status as an influencer and beef advocate. She's become heavily involved in the MBA program, a project she helped to grow during her time as a NCBA employee from 2013 to 2017. Brandi's focus on blend-

ing stories about her life on the ranch and raising cattle with her role as a working mom resonates with her audience and has fueled success on her social platforms. She genuinely connects with consumers, which has led to interviews this past year on national television networks including CBS, FOX, and MSNBC. As part of her advocacy work, Buzzard Frobose has tackled large issues, including food labels at the grocery store, environmental sustainability, and beef's role in healthy sustainable diets. You can follow Brandi Buzzard Frobose's advocacy efforts online at BuzzardsBeat.com or on social media at @ BrandiBuzzard. Buzzard Frobose will be recognized as Advocate of the Year during the 2020 Cattle Industry Convention in San Antonio.

The December Purdue/ CME Group Ag Economy Barometer suggests farmers are optimistic about the future, despite a weakened perception of current conditions. The survey dropped three points in December to a reading of 150, down from 153 in November. The Index of Current Conditions dropped 12 points to 141, down from 153 in November. Meanwhile, the Index of Future Expectations remained strong, up two points to a reading of 155. In the December survey, producers were asked whether their farm's

2019 financial performance was better, as expected, or worse than their initial budget projections. Just over-half, 52 percent, stated that their initial projections matched their farm's financial performance. Meanwhile, 30 percent stated it was worse, and 19 percent stated it was better than expected. The barometer is based on a mid-month survey of 400 U.S. crop and livestock producers. A reading over 100 suggests optimism, while a reading under 100 indicates pessimism amongst farmers regarding the ag economy.

Kansas Profile – Now That’s Rural: James Kenyon, Golden Rule Days Book

By Ron Wilson, director of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development at Kansas State University. “School days, school days, dear old golden rule days.” That nostalgic song describes good memories which many people have from their school times of yesteryear. One author has captured the history of many schools from the past across the state of Kansas. It’s today’s Kansas Profile. James Kenyon is the author of a recently published book which describes the history of 109 closed Kansas schools, including one in each county. James is himself a product of rural schools. He grew up on a farm in Graham County and graduated from Bogue Rural High School in 1966, one of a class of six people. James

went on to Kansas State and became a veterinarian, eventually practicing in the state of Iowa. He was named state veterinarian of the year and served as president of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association before retiring. James came back to Kansas for a 50-year reunion of his graduating class at Bogue. As he traveled through western Kansas, he thought about the various other schools where he had played ball. He looked into it and found that, of the 32 communities where he had played ball, all but one had lost its high school. That led him on a quest to capture the history of these rural schools. His goal was to cover the entire state.

James and family made 12 trips back to Kansas during 15 months. He visited lots of libraries, historical societies, city halls, community centers, and even local cafes for information. In 2019, he published his book Golden Rule Days – History and Recollections of 109 Closed Kansas High Schools. The book includes schools in every one of the 105 counties in Kansas. In five counties, there were no high schools that closed, so he chose to tell the story of the last one-room schoolhouse or a rural grade school in those counties. There were four counties where he chose to include a second high school story, making a total of 109 in the book.

Each school is described with its name, town, mascot, school colors, location, year closed, and then many stories about the history of the school, buildings, athletics, unique factors, notable graduates, traditions, and more. These are fascinating anecdotes. The names of the communities span the alphabet from Alton to Zenda. The introduction of James’s book describes the change in school organization through the years. In the beginning, one-room schools sprang up across the state, typically teaching all eight grades in a single building. In 1874, Kansas mandated compulsory school attendance for children ages 8 to 14. In

K-State Plans Leadership Academy for Youth Interested in Livestock Industry Students from across the country with an interest in the livestock industry and related careers can apply now for the Kansas State University Animal Sciences Leadership Academy (KASLA). The academy, now in its 12th year, is an intensive four-day educational experience designed to enhance the leadership skills and animal science knowledge of students in grades 9-12. Hosted by the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC), the academy’s goal is to develop young leaders within the livestock industry and prepare them for a successful future in this field. “The biggest benefit that I received from KASLA was identifying my

strengths and weaknesses and figuring out how to play to my strengths,” said Gavin Beesley, 2019 participant from Conway Springs, Kansas. “I would encourage others to apply. You get to have learning experiences while also being able to meet people in the agriculture industry. I got to meet so many fun people who were interested in similar things that I was and we got to have fun while learning.” The academy will take place in Manhattan, June 24-27. Applications are due April 15, 2020, and can be found at http://www.YouthLivestock.KSU.edu. The program’s itinerary will feature interactive workshops, tours and faculty mentor time with animal sciences and industry professors. Industry leaders will also join the participants frequently to share their knowledge and expertise.

Throughout the week, participants will work in teams to evaluate current events within the animal science industry in order to educate others. The leadership academy will culminate with team presentations and a closing reception on Saturday morning. Only 20 students will be accepted for each session so that counselors, professors and industry leaders can provide individualized attention. Participants will stay on campus in university housing

with program staff for the duration of the event. Transportation to and from the event is the responsibility of the participant, along with a $50 fee to reserve space. This fee is only due upon acceptance and not at the time of application. Through its sponsorship, the Livestock and Meat Industry Council covers all other costs. For more information or questions, contact academy director Sharon Breiner at sbreiner@ksu.edu or 785-532-6533.

1958, Kansas had 2,794 public school districts. The early 1960s were the era of school district consolidation. By 1969, there were only 311 unified school districts. Not every high school closing was due to consolidation. Three towns were destroyed in the 1951 flood. Three more were displaced by the reservoirs that were built in response. For example, Randolph Rural High School is Riley County’s entry in the book. “Education was valued in every settlement,” James wrote. At the beginning of the book, James thanks his Bogue high school teachers – and principal, cooks and custodian – by name, with a description of how each of them contributed to his education. “Kansas in the 1900s was a special time in history for small towns, their high schools, and a great

PAGE 5 education of life skills,” James wrote. His original rural hometown of Bogue now has a population of 136 people. Now, that’s rural. James Kenyon has published two additional books, The Art of Listening to the Heart and A Cow for College and Other Stories of 1950s Farm Life. “School days, school days, dear old golden rule days.” We salute James Kenyon for making a difference by capturing these memories of the golden rule days of yesteryear’s Kansas high schools. He ended the book’s introduction by quoting an excerpt of another poem, author unknown: “If you live and you work and develop your school, In spite of the fact it is small, You may find that your school – your own little school – Is the very best school after all.”

NPPC: Impossible Pork is Impossible The National Pork Producers Council Tuesday called Impossible Foods' naming convention for its plant-based products designed to mimic real pork a brazen violation of labeling law. Citing law that prohibits the use of words that redefine pork as consumers have known it for centuries, Dr. Dan Kovich, director of science and technology for the National Pork Producers Council, says, "What's impossible is to make pork from plants." NPPC supports consumer choice and competitive markets on a level playing field. Accordingly, plantbased and cell-cultured

products designed to mimic real meat must face the same stringent regulatory requirements as livestock agriculture, including truthful labeling standards, according to NPPC. Kovich calls the efforts by Impossible Foods, "a brazen attempt to circumvent decades of food labeling law and centuries of precedence." NPPC maintains "plantbased alternative protein products cannot be called pork, and cultured products cannot be called pork without qualification making it clear how they were made."

RFA: Ethanol Keeps Gas Prices Lower Amid High Oil Prices Tensions in the Middle East are creating volatile oil markets, as the U.S. ethanol industry reminds drivers how biofuels keep gas prices lower. Oil prices fell on a potential de-escalation between the U.S. and Iran, after reaching a nine-month high this week. Still, analysts expect gas price increases to reach the pump in the days ahead. The Renewable Fuels Association says that at fuel terminals where gasoline is blended, ethanol is currently selling for 40-50 cents per gallon less than gasoline. As U.S. consumers brace for

higher prices, a recent study shows the nation’s growing supply of ethanol significantly helps dampen gasoline price shocks that result from sudden oil market disruptions. The study says that if renewable fuels were removed from the fuel supply, gas prices would be more than $1 per gallon higher. RFA President and CEO Geoff Coopers says the recent tensions in the Middle East, and the recent study “highlights the critical need for greater domestic energy security and diversity.”

PAGE 7 the past 24 years, has been used by policymakers, state agencies, University faculty and staff, c o m mu n i t y / r u r a l development organizations, and local economic developers to explain current trends and provide guidance as they plan for the future of rural Nebraska. As an example, the Nebraska Information Technology Commission recently used Rural Poll data on broadband adoption and access to monitor the state’s broadband plan. And, data collected on the housing stock and support for housing programs/ strategies provided communities with vital information they need to address a critical issue for new resident recruitment and retention. The data have been used in many grant proposal applications, presentations to community groups, evaluations and needs assessments for Extension programming, and in other grant-funded projects. Findings from the Poll are regularly lifted up in local, state and national news such as National Public Radio (NPR) as well as legislative conversations. Other states have modeled survey efforts after the Poll, including Mississippi, Texas, South Dakota and Ohio. Academic articles using Poll data have examined community satisfaction, migration intentions, and residential preferences. The Nebraska Rural Poll started out over 20 years ago as a research tool but today its reach goes well beyond that.
