More Farmers Plan to get COVID-19 Vaccine A question in the Purdue/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer finds more farmers say they will get the COVID-19 vaccine. The Ag Economy Barometer for January, released this week, finds producers' attitudes about receiving a COVID-19 vaccine have shifted since the fall, with nearly six out of ten producers, 58 percent, planning to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Just 24 percent of producers said the same in October of last year. Still, 28 percent of farmers

say they will not get the vaccine, compared with 37 percent in October. The Ag Economy Barometer is calculated each month from 400 U.S. agricultural producers’ responses to a telephone survey. This month’s survey was conducted from January 18-22, 2021. Last month, the Kaiser Family Foundation COVID-19 Vaccine Monitor reported three in ten people in rural areas say they will "definitely get" the vaccine, compared to four in ten people in urban areas and suburban areas.

Farm bankruptcies were down slightly in 2020, but an industry economist warns farmers are "not out of the woods yet." Caseload statistics from U.S. Courts indicate that Chapter 12 family farm and family fishery bankruptcies totaled 552 filings during 2020, down 43 filings, or seven percent, from 2019 third-highest over the last decade. American Farm Bureau Federation Chief Economist John Newton writes in a Farm Bureau Market Intel analysis, "these numbers should not be considered a sign that the farm economy has recovered." In 33 of the 94 district court

regions, Chapter 12 bankruptcies increased from prior years. According to the Kansas City Federal Reserve, delinquency rates at commercial banks continue to increase, and USDA recently temporarily suspended debt collections, foreclosures and other activities on farm loans to support distressed farmer borrowers. Newton says the key to turning the farm economy around is a COVID-19 recovery, restored biofuels demand, increased trade, and new income sources, including adopting climate-smart practices and ecosystem services markets.

Vilsack Breezes Through Confirmation Hearing

Joe Biden’s Agriculture Secretary nominee pledges to address discrimination across the Department of Agriculture. In the Senate Agriculture Committee confirmation hearing, Tom Vilsack told lawmakers he will also seek to remove barriers to access for anyone who qualifies for nutrition assistance. In his opening statement, Vilsack also vowed to ensure USDA is doing its part to end the COVID-19 pandemic,

a member of BHK Insurance, LLC

lead the federal government in building and maintaining new markets, stop the farm debt cycle and create transparency in pricing throughout the supply chain. Vilsack, who was Agriculture Secretary during the Obama administration, also seeks to restore USDA employee morale “to the high level it was” during his previous tenure at USDA. The Committee advanced the nomination to the full Senate following the hearing.

Not Missing Opportunities in 2021 Jenilee Godsey, Twin Creeks Extension District Youth Agriculture Agent I recently read a newsletter from Dr. Tim Elmore entitled “Why Leaders Miss Opportunity and How to Fix That.” Dr. Elmore is the president of Growing Leaders, which is a nonprofit organization that provides resources that help develop young leaders for school, universities, etc. across the globe. His recent newsletter article sparked my interest as I often times find myself fighting complacency and comfort in my position within Extension, be it my own complacency and comfort or that of folks I find myself working with. To start the article, Dr. Elmore shares a story about an Ohio State University senior, Tony

Piloseno, who like many college students found himself in a part-time job. However, unlike many college students, he actually enjoyed his job with a local Sherwin-Williams store mixing paint. He enjoyed his job so much that he decided to create a TikTok account to share all of his favorite paint color concoctions with his followers. After his @tonesterpaints TikTok account exploded with popularity (1.5 million followers and 26 million likes, to be exact), Tony began to think that he was on to something. He felt that this account would be a great way to reach a younger audience that the chain had not been previously reaching out to, and decided to share this idea with his employ-

This mutual value is exchanged if the leader is humble and hungry.” Elmore went on to say that he felt Sherwin-Williams missed an opportunity upon firing Tony. The company could have decided to promote his ingenuity and leveraged another 1.5 million potential customers. In 2021, we must do better about not missing opportunities. We must be better about letting comfort and complacency slide, and allowing for new ideas to emerge. Information in this article has been adapted from Dr. Tim Elmore, founder of Growing Leaders. Kansas Corn STEM Launches “We Grow Corn!” Public Library Series R-CALF Organizing E-mail ing Corn on a Kansas Blitz in Favor of COOL Kansas Corn STEM has launched a new public library program, aiming to provide Kansas public libraries with new resources based on the book, “We Grow Corn! Raising Corn on a Kansas Family Farm”. The series follows the book, with six units focusing on growing corn and its many uses. Kansas Corn STEM is supported by Kansas corn farmers through the Kansas Corn Commission. Over the past five years, Kansas Corn STEM has been providing free supplies and training to K-12 teachers. While the “We Grow Corn!” book is being used by K-12 teachers, this series was created specifically for public libraries, making it different than what students would see in the classroom. “The Kansas Corn STEM education team strives to create new programs to help educators. Responding to a question from Senator John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, Vilsack stated, "I would be happy to work with you and your staff on anything that would allow us to advance country of origin labeling.” The latest attempt at COOL was largely blocked by the World Trade Organization, which allowed Canada and Mexico to place punitive tariffs on the U.S. in response to COOL.
