Established in 2004, the State of Design Festival is the largest and most innovative design event in Australia and the heart of design thinking and design activity. State of Design Festival increases the awareness of the value of design and showcases how design generates innovation, promotes sustainability and adds value to business and society. Festival programs demonstrate and broadly communicate how the Victorian and Australian design profession can improve living conditions, create sustainable development opportunities, and generate new and innovative products and services; in turn, providing economic benefit for the state of Victoria. This year the Festival theme, Design That Moves, explores design in, on and around projects that are transformative, mobile and networked. Workshops and forums examine the nomadic, the cyclical and the role of design systems. We are keen to understand how we can use design to create more active cities and we present events in transitional zones: platforms, revitalised spaces, foyers and stairs. These are 'spaces that take us places'. We also examine how design affects us mentally and physically. We ask, 'how does design influence our experience of objects and environments, how does design influence how we feel?' For the 2011 Festival, motion and emotion are cause for renewed thinking around design.

We like to think about the 2011 Festival theme – Design That Moves – in both a physical and emotional sense. We’ve used a rolling mix of primary forms and bright colours so that the design works on a number of levels: all ages, all languages and with a range of potential meanings from the most simple to the highly symbolic. We are as interested in the pure moments of resolution, when the shapes are unmistakably formed, as we are in the fuzzy moments in between. It’s a design that we hope will develop into a conversation. —SouthSouthWest

Are you a designer and do you also play an instrument? Respondents to our call-out are coming together to form The One Night Only Festival Band. This collection of designer-musicans will blow, strum, drum and sing their way through two songs that respond to the festival theme.
Roll Up is a mobile service that encourages sustainable transport to festivals and events by providing fast, fun and free bicycle valet parking. It is highly visible, with a circusthemed site design that positions bike riders as VIPs, parking 20 bikes in the space it takes to park one car. Bring your bike and ride it into the Royal Exhibtion Building for safe keeping.

Twenty-five designers of various disciplines have been challenged to explore the convergence of existing objects and invent new ones, that bring depth to our understanding of motion and movement and its relationship to emotion. Vote to determine the very best in Melbourne design. The largest peer and public collective vote in Melbourne design. More than 500 design professional and over 2000 public votes are made each year. Votes can be cast at the interactive voting station at the Royal Exhibition Building during the first week of the Festival.
Materials take centre stage at the MoOD Innovation Platform. Two leading European organisations dedicated to material innovation, MoOD Brussels and MatĂŠriO will present over 150 materials chosen for their innovation in process, technical properties, performance, integrated intelligence or contribution to the environment. The Victoria India Service Design Jam is an open innovation online workshop calling upon 40 Australian and Indian designers and students to utilise service design strategies in social innovation to develop a solution to a social problem. The Victoria India Service Design Jam will facilitate shared knowledge, skills and relationships as participants exchange ideas and develop collaborative responses to the brief. The Service Design Jam aims to create a platform for education, design and trade links between Australia and India, and foster ongoing exchange.

While Thursday and Friday at Design:Made:Trade are open only to trade visitors, on Saturday and Sunday everyone is welcome to visit the outstanding exhibitions and take part in activities designed for children and their families as well as interactive making events for all ages. Weekend public programs include:
Craftsmanship and design are combined in an exhibition of custom-built bicycles from around the country, commissioned from a select group of bicycle builders – both professionals and passionate amateurs. The bikes have been selected for their aesthetics, artistry and creativity, with stories about the bikes and their builders accompanying each exhibit.

Design and motion are explored in a modelmaking workshop for kids, families and friends. Construct your own, ideal 'patch' of a city, during a fun-filled, educational workshop. Kids will make their 'patch' from a wide range of raw and recycled materials with the help of designers. Come draw creatures that will be scanned and transcribed into an actual video game by experienced developers. Everyone has a videogame inside, or at least an idea for one. On the top floor of the GPO sits Melbourne’s ‘zero’ point, this is where the distance of every place from the city is measured. This special site is also the home of the pop-up Festival hub – a shared environment for collective design activity and observation. Programmed activity will take place morning, noon and night for the second week of the Festival. View an exhibition or installation, take part in a workshop, listen to a talk, browse the design reading room or watch designers at work. Dynamic and evolving, the Do Design Space is part installation, part classroom, part studio, part laboratory – the environment builds as ideas are formed. Walls become exhibition spaces, filled with new propositions as they are developed. At the heart of the space, is the ‘Micro-kitchen by Broadsheet’. Carefully curated, the kitchen brings together outstanding Melbourne chefs, designers and local produce. Each day, a designer will brief a chef to ‘design’ a soup of the day. The designers will determine the colour, texture, consistency and name of the soup. They will then work actively with the chef who will ultimately bring the soup to life. Also featuring local craft beer, wine and coffee, the Micro-kitchen will be the place to meet for informal debate before and after Festival events. A summer of gleaning, eating, designing, preserving and making is expressed within a digitally printed cloth installed as a canopy in the Do Design Space. The cloth canopy invites visitors to step underneath and experience a bygone summer. On ‘Gleaning Day’, the cloth is cut and shaped by a team of gleaners into experimental fashion products. The 9 to 5 Talks Program is a series of live, Skype conversations held in partnership with the Wheeler Centre over five days of the Festival. In a Q&A format, Melbourne’s leading designers and visionaries will pose nine critical questions to five of the world’s most important design thinkers working in fashion, graphic design, education, interior design, industrial design and architecture. Join these free Q&A Skype sessions with Ilse Crawford, Troika, Kyung-won Chung, Milton Glaser and Gareth Pugh. Underscoring the Festival theme, Design That Moves, each of the invited design thinkers has a practice closely engaged by issues and ideas such as design and emotional authenticity, design systems, global navigation and mobility, the social impact of design and fashion design that literally moves. Each interview will run for approximately one hour and will be followed by a brief intermission and a 30 minute discussion forum. This forum is a chance to ‘unpack’ the interview and join an industryrelevant panel discussion with local designers.

Ilse Crawford creates modern and emotional brands, products, interiors, buildings and furniture. In 1989, she founded British Elle Decoration, making it an international decorating bible. As Vice President of Donna Karan Home, Crawford regenerated the brand. She has since started her own company, Studioilse and is also Head of Department at the celebrated Design Academy Eindhoven. She has designed environments for Soho House and Aesop and her table lamp for Wastberg is considered a modern classic. Creator of the iconic ‘I ♥ NY’, Milton Glaser is one of the most celebrated designers in the world and a rare breed of intellectual designer-illustrators. Glaser’s presence and impact on the profession is formidable. He is the first designer to receive The US National Medal of Arts, presented by President Obama, for a lifetime devoted to improving the way people communicate through innovation in graphic design. Glaser has held one-man shows at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1975) and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (1977). In 2004, he was selected for the lifetime achievement award of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. He holds honorary doctorates from The Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Moore College; Philadelphia Museum School; The School of Visual Arts; Queens College, CUNY; the New York University at Buffalo, and London’s Royal College of Art. He challenges set attitudes towards clothing and design. As one of London's most exciting and innovative designers, Pugh produces immaculately made, sometimes nonsensically shaped, wearable sculptures designed to distort the human body almost beyond recognition. At 14, Pugh began designing for The English Youth Theatre. In 2003 he graduated from Central Saint Martins. By age 30, Pugh had established collaborations with Arena Homme+, Self Service, Dazed & Confused and Nick Knight. Troika are Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer and Sebastien Noel. Together they have pioneered a technology-infused design movement and are highly regarded for their experiential projects that merge art, architecture and technical invention. Troika represent a new wave of progressive design practice not bound by discipline. They create unforgettable objects, installations and printed matters that are playful, intelligent and contemplative. Troika have exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, The British Council and MoMA New York and have published two books: Digital by Design (2008) and Moscow Style (2005). Design for an active city is a competition open to all Victorian designers that calls for propositions to enhance and activate a major thoroughfare in central Melbourne
Just 30 minutes of exercise each day can help prevent serious chronic diseases such as obesity, however, over the past 50 years, for urban communities there has been a huge lifestyle shift from being highly physically active to predominately sedentary (World Health Organisation 2004, Edwards & Tsourous 2006). Design can play a major role in stimulating increased physical activity, either through interventions in the built environment or through the design of new systems and social programs. The Design for an Active City competition calls for implementable, site-specific proposals to improve the pedestrian experience on the Collins Street Bridge and thereby increase pedestrian activity. The expected outcome of the competition is an installation to be in place on-site for at least three months. Project partner VicUrban will provide $25,000 (inclusive of design fees of $5,000) to develop, construct and install the winning project on the bridge. The Collins Street Bridge is part of Melbourne’s premier street, linking the CBD and Southern Cross Station with Melbourne’s waterfront in Docklands. Stretching 350 metres from Spencer Street to Batman’s Hill Drive, this section will eventually melt into the street landscape and will look and feel like other parts of Collins Street, with buildings on both sides, continuous tree plantings and activity from pedestrians and trams. However, while development is still in progress, there are sections of the bridge that are very exposed to the elements which is affecting the pedestrian experience from Southern Cross Station into Docklands. The competition opened on 25 May, 2011 and closes on 6 July, 2011. On 25 July, the Design for an Active City jury will unveil the top competition submissions and announce the winner through a public presentation and discussion at the Do Design Space (pages 12–13) The jury is seeking submissions that will stimulate increased physical activity in city commuters, demonstrate how design can make our urban environments safer, healthier and more enjoyable and improve the visual quality and pedestrian experience of the bridge. The winning entry will be sustainable in terms of material choice and use, inventive, low-cost and easily installed on the site. The most exciting propositions will be on public display from 25–29 July at the Do Design Space. An event devised in Tokyo in 2003 for young designers to meet and show their work in public, PechaKucha events are now happening in over 400 cities around the world. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of ‘chit chat’, the PechaKucha format is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. Presentations are concise, keeping things moving at a rapid pace.
A great title sequence can pre-empt a film with serious wow-factor. Title sequences build anticipation and frame the mood. Sometimes they’re better than the film itself. For this presentation a selection of designers from various fields will present some of the best and most talked about title designs. They will share the sequences that have moved them and the ones that have left their mark in cinema history. The Sound of Buildings is a multimedia walking tour spanning 10 of Melbourne’s most architecturally significant buildings told through the voices of designers, building users and children. This interactive tour will provide listeners with a deeper level of understanding and context around the selected buildings while highlighting Melbourne’s rich architectural stock and tradition of quality design. The tour will take in the best of Melbourne’s old and new buildings using audio, imagery and a GPS mapping function to navigate the listeners. Come draw creatures that will be scanned and transcribed into an actual video game by experienced developers. Everyone has a videogame inside, or at least an idea for one. This event gathers those ideas in a great big tub and then, in a jamming few hours, turns them into something real.

Every day for a city the size of London, enough food for thirty million meals must be produced, imported, sold, cooked, eaten and disposed. While Melbourne may be a smaller city, a similar process happens here. Given this effort, it is remarkable that those of us living in cities get to eat at all. Carolyn Steel is an architect, lecturer and author and who has been invited to Australia to host forums concentrating on food consumption in cities with a particular focus on urban agriculture. Steel’s chief interest is in exploring how cities are shaped by food and her work has centred on developing a lateral approach to urban design by looking at the everyday routines that shape cities and the way we inhabit them. Her book, Hungry City: How Food Shapes Our Lives (Random House, 2008), won the Royal Society of Literature Jerwood Award for Non-Fiction and was later featured on a special edition of Radio 4’s The Food Programme. Hungry City: How Food Shapes Our Lives follows food’s journey from land to city, through market and supermarket, kitchen and table, waste-dump and back again, to show how food affects all our lives, and impacts on the planet. The final chapter asks how we might use food to re-think cities in the future – how to design them and their hinterlands more efficiently, and enhance their liveability. Do not miss this important keynote address that will inspire new thinking around how we can sustainably feed our growing metropolises. Carolyn Steel’s keynote address will highlight how feeding cities arguably has a greater social and physical impact on the planet and us than anything else we do. Yet, too few of us in the developed world are aware of the process. Food arrives on our plates as if by magic, and we rarely stop to wonder how it might have got there. Recent extreme weather and peak oil prices have sent the cost of food soaring, while supermarket price wars mean produce is being valued at unsustainably low levels. The conversation around how cities can be designed more productively with appropriate pockets of urban agriculture and smarter food networks, is one that we need to consider seriously. This lecture will stimulate discussion around food security, accessibility, production, consumption and distribution. Our daily need to eat shapes our existence, yet for the majority of us, it also creates a paradox. We live in cities, while our food comes from elsewhere: a place we may refer to as 'the countryside', although the word bears little resemblance to the realities of modern food production. With the global urban population set to double by 2050, the feeding of cities is set to dominate the political, economic and ecological agenda for years to come. For architects and planners, the question of how to design and build must be weighed against a backdrop of social migration, diminishing resources and climate change. The scale and complexity of the task demands a broadening of the architectural and urban design discourse. New tools are needed, in order to understand the issues at hand, and make best use of our collaborative creative potential. Food is one such tool. Mankind's most vital shared commodity, food is embedded in our lives socially, physically, and symbolically. Join this intimate workshop, led by Carolyn Steel to explore how we can harness food’s power to shape the world better.

As a body architect she invents and builds structures on the skin that re-shape the human silhouette suggesting a new breed; a future human archetype existing in an alternate world. Join us for this rare lecture opportunity to hear about Lucy McRae’s provocative and often grotesquely beautiful imagery. Trained as a classical ballerina and architect, McRae’s work inherently fascinates. The media label her an inventor, her friends describe her a trailblazer. Either way, she relies on instinct to evolve an extraordinary visual path that is powerful, primal and uniquely Lucy McRae. Working as a Director, Art Director and Innovation consultant, McRae works with an international network of clients including ShowStudio (London), Robyn (Stockholm), Rojo (Brasil), Pompidou (Paris), Bernhard Willhelm (Paris) and Philips (Netherlands). In addition to the lecture, audiences will have the opportunity to view Lucy McRae’s work via an exhibition of the outcomes of her latest project: “An Innovation Workshop”. Lucy has worked with 20 of the most talented students from RMIT across architecture, fashion, interior design, media and visual arts, and other industry professionals over three intense weeks to produce a music video for an Australian band in a unique way.

State of Design Festival has launched an online, 365 day of the year platform for sharing new thinking, called Design TV. Accessible to local, regional, national and international audiences, Design TV includes three channels. Date: 365 days of the year Location: stateofdesign.com.au
Channel 1, presented by Design Victoria, promotes the value of design in business and showcases successful designer / business collaborations. In video format business leaders discuss the difference design has made to their operations. Case studies include: Ripple Products, an innovation company who makes domestic water saving devices; Patron Power, who in 2010 worked with Outerspace Design to create a globally unique marina service unit; Somage Fine Foods, supplier of fine teas and Half A Teaspoon, who invented a design-led solution to the global environmental problem of bottled water. Channel 2 is Write on Design presented by Architecture Media. It seeks to engage more Victorians in design writing and constructive criticism. Encouraging new talent through a process of mentorships, a team of four established writers will work with a team of eight emerging writers to develop quick responses to State of Design Festival programs.
Reviews will be uploaded in video, blog, pictorial and essay format during the Festival. Channel 3 is the resource centre for the State of Design. The active archive will develop throughout the course of the Festival and will feature video presentations of 2011 speakers and program highlights. The channel also houses conversations and presentations from past Festivals. The State of Design website is the place to keep up to date with design. Watch ten teams from around the world come together to compete in an actionpacked, hands-on, game plan competition. Participants will apply through a formal process, travel to Melbourne, and meet their teammates and attend a symposium as part of pre-event preparations. As things get started, sites will be announced, mission statements and briefs will be received, and the teams will be given a budget and a deadline of 72 hours to design, construct and install their projects. They will camp on-site and live and breathe their site until it is complete! The winning team will be awarded with fun, fame and fortune! The previously unused sites offer a unique opportunity for this kind of temporary design event to exist, injecting the urban landscape with playfulness, and opening our everyday spaces to possible futures that are experiential adaptive. The pop-up radio station will broadcast over the coming months and during the Festival you can tune-in for live crosses to Festival events, interviews with leading Melbourne designers, pre-recorded Festival forums, studio playlists and more. The Pop-Up Pirate Radio Tower at the VCA, constructed in the spirit of its buccaneer namesake by looting and pilfering local scrap yards a 40" shipping container will be placed on end and turned into a five storey radio tower. Designed by US-based architect and artist Adam Kalkin, the tower will include a fully operational transmission mast and control room providing passage for clandestine radio to crusade the airwaves. The vast archive of 'snail mail' sent to the City of Melbourne since the 1840s now gives a surprising lesson in graphic design and city history in this exhibtion of letterheads. 10,000 letters have been picked over. Participants include a broad range of traders from small independent boutiques, designerowned and operated spaces and pop-up shops to department stores carrying everything from fashion, books, and lighting to objects. With many installations located in street-level stores, this diverse retail landscape provides 24 hour viewing. Look.Stop.Shop is a round-the-clock, program using design to promote a safe, vibrant and inclusive city as it moves from day to night.
