RESILIENT MARYLAND DEFENSE COMMUNITIES PROJECT
With 20 military facilities spanning Maryland and generating more than $61 billion in economic impact, ensuring the long-term feasibility of these installations is essential for both national defense and the well-being of the communities which support them. To help insulate these installations from the effects of extreme weather, climatechange, or other natural or man-made threats to mission readiness, the Maryland Department of Commerce has launched the Resilient Maryland Defense Communities program.
Utilizing a $1.06 million Department of Defense grant from the Office of Local Community Cooperation (OLDCC), Maryland will partner with the military, local defense communities, and state agencies including the Maryland Office of Resilience within the Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Planning, with the goal of assessing resilience risks in defense communities that host military installations, identifying interdependencies and vulnerabilities and gaps in resources to address them, and provide recommendations aimed at mitigating these threats. To meet this goal, the Resilient Maryland Defense Communities Project will produce a “One Community” framework, aligning federal, state, and local resilience planning efforts while focusing on the unique needs of Maryland’s military installations and their local communities.
