STATE OPERA SA 2016 SEASON

Evolution doesn’t take millennia; it only takes a night. It begins as you are cocooned in the dark embrace of the theatre. The silence that fills the room as light falls upon the stage. In the moments that follow, between the first crystalline note and the final thunder of applause, there is a change. A transformation. Love to despair. Ignorance to wisdom. Tears to laughter. The totality of human understanding played out before you. And within you. Experience the transformation with Opera. Evolve.

WELCOME TO STATE OPERA’S 2016 SEASON – A FITTING 40TH YEAR CELEBRATION, WITH THE THEME OPERA. EVOLVE. WE’VE COME A LONG WAY, AND OPERA AS A GENRE HAS METAMORPHOSED WITH US.
4
WELCOME Our 2016 journey spans some 225 years, from the classical world of Mozart to the luscious sensibilities of opera now. In bringing opera to as many people as possible, we are expanding our range of venues to make the experience even more interesting and enjoyable. We commence with a brand new production of The Magic Flute, designed and directed by David Lampard, and staged in the mysterious depths of the Freemasons Great Hall on North Terrace. A Masonic opera in a Masonic Lodge? Just wait until you see it! A great opportunity to showcase the brilliant young operatic talent we have been nurturing. In May we present a world premiere interpretation of Cloudstreet! After four years of development, this adaptation of Tim Winton’s classic Australian novel, with beautiful music by George Palmer is set to become a classic in its own right. This will be the operatic event of the year, with a stunning ensemble cast directed by the internationally renowned Gale Edwards.
What better way to complete the rest of the year than with a veritable feast of Puccini? In September, a Puccini Spectacular, with a smorgasbord from wonderful soloists performing excerpts from his greatest operas in the stunning acoustic of the Adelaide Town Hall. The climax of the year is Tosca – the long awaited return of this incredibly popular work, in State Opera’s co-production with Welsh National Opera, to be presented in the Festival Theatre. Soprano Kate Ladner, tenor Rosario La Spina and baritone Mario Bellanova join forces for a spellbinding night in the theatre! All 2016 productions will be accompanied by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. As well, there are chamber operas, pop-up operas, masterclasses and artist showcases. Your operatic calendar in 2016 is going to be overflowing! There has never been a better opportunity to experience the wonderful evolution of opera. Tailor a flexible subscription package to suit your needs. I look forward to seeing you there.

Mozart’s classic Masonic story is brought to life in a new production created especially for staging in the Freemasons Great Hall. As the Earth falls beneath the shadow of a total solar eclipse, Tamino finds himself in a mysterious new world where surreal is his new reality. Pushed and pulled by opposing forces, he encounters strange creatures, true love and a series of epic, transformative trials. Director and designer David Lampard’s new vision for this popular opera draws inspiration from the elegance of masonic symbolism, focused through a 1950’s lens to create a vintage fantasy that explores social issues both timeless and contemporary. The production will feature a who’s who of established and emerging South Australian operatic talent including Joanna McWaters as Queen of the Night and Robert England as Sarastro, with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra conducted by Luke Dollman. The Magic Flute will be sung in English, in an intimate setting that will truly transport you to another era. This was one of Mozart’s last and undeniably lasting works, and has been a favourite with adults and children alike for more than two centuries. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the beauty of Mozart’s music but you’ll need to book early. Seats are genuinely limited.
If you loved Don Giovanni, Don Pasquale & The Elixir of Love, you’ll love The Magic Flute. 9

CLOUDSTREET! FAMILY. EVOLVED. GEORGE PALMER (Adapted from the Tim Winton novel with libretto by George Palmer and Tim Winton) CONDUCTOR Timothy Sexton DIRECTOR Gale Edwards ADELAIDE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Sung in English. Running Time: Approximately three hours (including a 20-minute interval)
Cloudstreet! First an iconic novel by Tim Winton, adapted into a brilliantly successful play, followed by a critically acclaimed television miniseries. Now it receives the operatic treatment it truly deserves in this world premiere season of Cloudstreet! George Palmer’s evocative harmonies and achingly beautiful melodies make this the theatre event of the year. After a four year development, this musical treatment of the story finally gets its chance to fly on the mainstage. Internationally renowned director Gale Edwards places her unmistakeable stamp on this landmark work. Set in the mid-20th century, Cloudstreet! tells the story of two Western Australian families – the Lambs and the Pickles, and the extraordinary events that ultimately bind them together – often hilarious, sometimes harrowing. It is the story of Fish Lamb and the fate that makes him the link between two worlds, and of his brother Quick, and Rose, the girl across the hall. It is a story of love in all its forms, but most of all, it’s about catharsis and redemption. Cloudstreet! will leave you exhilarated. This quintessential Australian story will be the talking point of 2016.

Puccini created some of the greatest operas ever written, but few surpass Tosca for grandeur, beauty and drama! The return of this incredible opera to Adelaide has been long-awaited, and this production will not disappoint. Soprano Kate Ladner returns to the Festival Theatre stage as the actress Floria Tosca – a role she was born to play. Her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, will be sung by the golden voiced tenor Rosario La Spina and as his arch nemesis Baron Scarpia, baritone Mario Bellanova once again brings his powerful presence to bear. What price will Scarpia demand of Tosca to free Cavaradossi, and what bargain will she broker to gain his freedom? Tosca also contains spectacular choral music, with the State Opera Chorus in full flight. You cannot miss the incredible Church scene, alone worth the price of admission! The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra brings its customary brilliance to this opera – a rousing celebration to cap off a stunning 40th birthday year!

NEW WORK
State Opera SA enjoys a national and international reputation as a company with a strong commitment to new opera development and the evolution of the art form. Our 2016 world premiere season of Cloudstreet! is a perfect example of a work we have nurtured through the embryonic workshop stages to its unveiling on the operatic stage. State Opera SA also provides support to the smallto-medium arts sector to assist with the experimentation and creation of new works. A thriving, innovative environment across the arts community is vital to drive South Australia’s creative economy. State Opera SA is very proud to play its part.
18
Ngurunderi Inspirations State Opera SA is working with composer Tim Fatchen on the development of Ngurunderi Inspirations, a work which looks at the mythology of the lower River Murray. One of the most enduring indigenous legends of the Murray is that of the giant Murray cod, Ponde, and how its capture and demise resulted in creation of all the fishes of the river. This tale, and that of Ngurunderi’s wives, form the basis of the first part of Ngurunderi Inspirations, supported by Fatchen’s evocative music. This work will begin public performance in stages from late 2016.
Innocence
Laughter and Tears
In collaboration with SINGular Productions and the support of Arts SA, State Opera SA is also investing in the development of a new opera, Innocence, based on the novel Time’s Long Ruin by SA author Stephen Orr. This work explores loss, grief and the journey of those left behind. Innocence will be workshopped in 2016 in preparation for a proposed 2017 performance season.
State Opera SA is working with Victorian Opera and Circus Oz to devise a spellbinding mix of circus and singing. In Laughter, colourful characters bring Commedia dell’Arte to life creating a dreamlike vision of 17th and 18th century improvisational theatre. In Tears, the lives of the performers unravel through a dramatic retelling of Leoncavallo’s one act opera, I Pagliacci.
Stay in touch with State Opera SA as more details will be forthcoming throughout the year. For updates sign up to our quarterly online newsletter saopera.sa.gov.au/newsletter/

THE FRIENDS OF STATE OPERA
Celebrating 40 Years! In 1991 The Friends of State Opera SA launched their acclaimed book, ‘Through the Opera Glass, a Chronological Register of Opera performed in South Australia from 1836 to 1988’. The result of years of hard work and research by a team of Friends’ volunteers, led by the indomitable Kathleen Steele Scott AM, the book was designed as part of the 150th celebrations of South Australia as a gift to subscribers. Its dedication reads: ‘To all who love opera and to the many dedicated people who have helped to keep opera alive in South Australia.’ As The Friends and State Opera approach their 40th year celebrations in 2016 and while considering the evolution of the art form that is opera, as well as our outstanding State Opera company, it is upon that dedication that so much of who and what we are rests. For 40 years there has been an unbroken chain of dedicated people who have, through The Friends and State Opera SA, helped to not only keep opera alive in South Australia but also enabled it to thrive and take on a new creative life. The story of the evolution of The Friends of State Opera is one of
dedication to the art that is opera through its passionate support, hard work and above all, belief in the State Opera of South Australia. The Friends are proud to continue their support of State Opera SA by sponsoring Mozart’s The Magic Flute. In addition, The Friends will continue to assist the further development of young artists through its support of the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation Opera Program. In 2016 The Friends activities will include the ever popular Opera Voices Introductions, which provide Members with the opportunity to hear from our opera
production directors, conductors and singers in the creative and social ambience of the Opera Studio. In addition, The Friends invite you to help them celebrate this special year with their ‘Through the Opera Glass 40th Anniversary Events’. STATE OPERA OF SA

CELEBRATING THE EVOLUTION OF THE COMPANY AND THE ART FORM In 2016 the State Opera of South Australia celebrates its 40th anniversary as a statutory body with the Government of South Australia. The company has come a long way since 1976 when it metamorphosed from the Intimate Opera Group to New Opera SA, to what we now know as The State Opera of South Australia. The history of this company has all the elements of a grand opera in itself with trials and tribulations, scenery changes, and a cast of distinctive characters all enjoying a great love affair with opera. In our 40th year of operation, we want to thank you, our loyal audience, for your ongoing support and we hope you enjoy the following insert looking back at our colourful history. We look forward to sharing the next 40 years of opera evolution with you!

40 YEARS OF THE STATE OPERA OF SA HIGH NOTES
State Opera SA is recognised throughout Australia, and internationally, for its outstanding productions and range of specialist opera productions from the 1998 and 2004 Australian Premiere of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, to international collaborations including Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking and Moby Dick to the most recent Philip Glass Trilogy.
GOOD FRIENDS ARE WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD The Friends of State Opera also celebrate 40 years of operation in 2016. Since 1976, The Friends have been raising money (often in large amounts), sharing the workload among volunteers and have become integral to the successful running of the company.
Their interest and support for young singers has also been unwavering from contributing the State Opera Aria prize within the Adelaide Eisteddfod to giving young artists a platform and raising money to help them with travel and study costs. Many renowned artists have benefited from this philanthropy including: Grant Doyle, Gisele Blanchard, Jacqueline Forster, Deborah Peake-Jones, Catriona Barr and Teresa La Rocca – all of whom now have established professional careers.

EDUCATION State Opera SA has a strong commitment to operatic education. In 2016, this will be enhanced with a new industry partnership with the Elder Conservatorium, University of Adelaide, which will see State Opera SA linked closely with the development and training of tertiary level vocal students, with the aim of enhancing career paths in opera. The James & Diana Ramsay Foundation Opera Program will also continue in 2016, educating and nurturing young professional singers to succeed on a national and international stage. This year, as well as the in-house development of language, stagecraft and musical skills, there will be multiple performance opportunities for these artists, including masterclasses, studio productions and pop-up opera experiences. State Opera SA also conducts school education projects, generally centred around one of the mainstage operas. These events involve half or whole day sessions with entire classrooms of children from primary and secondary schools, allowing access to opera across a wide demographic. Feedback over the last two years has been extraordinary, with this program supporting State Opera SA’s vision of ‘opera for all’. Check the website regularly to see this invaluable program in progress.

JAMES & DIANA RAMSAY FOUNDATION OPERA PROGRAM
“Diana Ramsay AO and her late husband James, have been long-time supporters of State Opera, support which currently continues through the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation. We are very pleased to assist in allowing artists of long standing to return to the common pool the assets of their experience, and so develop the next generation who in turn can enrich us all.”
For many years, State Opera SA has nurtured the early careers of some of South Australia’s most talented operatic young artists. Named in honour of the continued financial support of the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation, and with assistance from The Friends of State Opera, this nurturing has been able to expand. The 2016 program comprises a packed year of activity for a number of very special artists participating in a vast array of classes, including Alexander Technique, movement and dance, stagecraft, intensive language skills, repertoire coaching and live performance opportunities. These training activities culminate in public Masterclasses, Summer and Winter Showcase concerts, education programs and corporate engagements, with the State Opera’s main stage productions featuring some of these artists. South Australia has always aspired to produce brilliant arts practitioners. With the support of the The James & Diana Ramsay Foundation, State Opera SA is able to maintain its solid reputation as a hothouse for the creation of the next generation of Australian opera stars.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW? You don’t need any background information before you go to an opera because English translations are projected above the stage, so it’s easy to follow the storyline. In 2016, we also have two operas performed in English; The Magic Flute and Cloudstreet! If you want to enrich your experience there will be in-depth programmes available to purchase, and there is always information available on our website such as musical excerpts, video guides and cast information. There are also several events associated with each production. Please turn to pages 24 – 27 of this brochure to find out more.
WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE? The city centre district, where most of our venues are, can often be very busy, so it’s best to arrive at least 40 minutes before the performance is due to begin. This will leave you time to find parking, buy a drink before the performance, purchase a program, and find your seat. Latecomers will be allowed in at an appropriate break in the performance.
WHERE CAN I PARK? Please see the venue information on pages 38 – 41 to find out the best parking places for each venue. Spaces can fill quickly on performance nights, so it is recommended you arrive early. Free car parking is available at The Opera Studio when performances are held there.
HOW LONG DOES AN OPERA USUALLY LAST? An opera usually runs between two and three hours with intervals included. Sometimes they can be shorter than this, and on occasion, longer. The estimated run time for each performance can be found on the opera’s information page in this brochure or on the State Opera SA website.
ARE THERE CONCESSION AND STUDENT TICKETS? Concession and student ticket prices are available for The Magic Flute and Cloudstreet!. Please check the website for up-to-date ticket price information.
WHAT SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE FOR PATRONS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS? Wheelchair allocation is available at all State Opera SA performances. Hearing loops and disability parking are also available for Festival Theatre performances. Please tell us your requirements when booking.
IS THERE A MAILING LIST? State Opera SA distributes its Backstage online newsletter each quarter and also sends out invitations, discount offers and updates prior to performance dates. To stay up-to-date with industry news, events and offers, please sign up to our online mailing list at saopera.sa.gov.au/newsletter/
STILL HAVE QUESTIONS? We’re a small and friendly team here at State Opera SA and the people you talk with over the phone or online will be the same people you see at our events and productions. Please contact us on the details below.
If you have a question or something you’d like clarified, please talk to us on Facebook, call us on 8226 4790 or contact us through the website saopera.sa.gov.au/contact-us/ 32
