We Win Again! Competition Increases for America’s Best Communities

Statesboro has been chosen as a semifinalist in the America’s Best Communities competition and will move forward in the national contest for $3 million in prize money. Sponsored by Frontier Communications, DISH Network, CoBank, and the Weather Channel, the three-year competition was created to focus on the revitalization of small towns and cities throughout America. Statesboro was chosen as one of 50 quarterfinalists last year out of 350 communities nationwide that entered the contest. In January 2016, the field was narrowed to 15 semifinalists who will compete in April 2016 for one of eight spots eligible for the $3 million in prize money. The communities chosen as the 15 semifinalists are: Lake Havasu City, Arizona; Charleston, West Virginia; Statesboro, Georgia; Valley County/Meadows Valley, Idaho; Chisago Lakes Area, Minnesota; Huntington, West Virginia; Portsmouth, Ohio; DeKalb, Illinois; Fort Dodge, Iowa; Darrington/Arlington, Washington; Valparaiso, Indiana; Tualatin, Oregon; Wenatchee/East Wenatchee, Washington; Madison, Indiana; and Angola/Fremont, Indiana. Statesboro is the only community in Georgia to be represented and the only community in the southeastern United States to advance in the competition. Eight towns will be chosen after community leaders from the 15 semifinalists make presentations on their revitalization projects to a panel of judges chosen by the America’s Best Communities’ sponsors in Durham, North Carolina, April 25 – 27, 2016. 10 • Statesboro Magazine

Statesboro’s 4th Annual Chocolate Run 5K Enjoys Sweet Success!

Each February, what has been named “Statesboro’s Sweetest Race,” the Chocolate Run 5K, raises funds and awareness for the Open Hearts Community Mission. The 5K Run/Walk, through the beautiful Georgia Southern University Campus, is open to the public. This year’s event was held on Saturday, February 20th. Over $30,000 was raised by runners to benefit the Open Hearts Community Mission, which helps the homeless of Statesboro and Bulloch County with their immediate needs while providing resources to get them back on their feet. Race participants enjoyed chocolate treats and themed t-shirts as tokens of appreciation for competing. All proceeds raised from the event will go towards the operation and maintenance of the OHCM shelter. To find out more about the organization or to send a donation go to http://ohcm.org/.

Ground Broken on Portal Middle High School Athletic Complex A groundbreaking ceremony for additions to Portal Middle High School was held on January 29th at the school’s athletic complex. At its January 14th meeting, the Bulloch County Board of Education approved a bid from Pope Construction to begin on the four projects: construction of a new fieldhouse; addition of bathrooms to serve football and baseball fields; construction of a new concession stand; and improved handicapped accessibility to the football field. The facilities committee of the Bulloch County Board of Education, which was made up of faculty and community representatives from every school, identified 36 facilities projects for the school system. The first tier of projects includes 12 school needs. Of those top-12, four were for immediate improvements to PMHS’s athletic complex. The Portal projects were ranked #1, #2, #3 and #9 by members of the community committee. The project is being funded with the third Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax passed by Bulloch County voters in March 2009 for collection during a five-year period beginning January 2014 through December 2018. The PMHS Athletic Complex improvements will use $999,644 of the ESPLOST funds. The completion of these PMHS projects will put the school’s athletic facilities in line with the complexes that have already been provided for Statesboro High School and Southeast Bulloch High School.

Georgia Southern ROTC wins third MacArthur Award The U.S. Army Cadet Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky, announced recently that Georgia Southern University’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program was one of the eight winners of the prestigious MacArthur Award for the 2014-2015 school year. Georgia Southern was selected as the top program from 6th Brigade Army ROTC, which includes 39 programs from six states and Puerto Rico. This marks the Eagle Battalion’s third MacArthur Award since 2009. Awards are based on overall performance, National Order of Merit List standings and cadet retention rate. The Eagle Battalion was also recently recognized by the 6th Brigade for having the Top Nursing Program for 2015, Highest GPA for Mission Set 17, and exceeded the contract goal for STEM Cadets for Mission Set 17. The Georgia Southern Eagle Battalion ROTC program will soon have a new home on campus with construction currently underway for the University’s new Military Science building. The new 32,000-square-foot building, located on campus at the corner of Forest Drive and Old Register Road, will consist of a large auditorium, meeting rooms, classrooms, storage space and faculty and administrative offices.

Most Fabulous Community Activist – Francys Johnson

Most Fabulous Woman of 2015 – Ashley Hines Ellis

4

1 Fabulous barely describes our “over the top” achiever and Most Fabulous Woman of 2015, Ashley Hines Ellis. Ashley is a whirlwind of action all the time as mother to two active boys, Executive Vice President of BBWH Insurors, 2015 President of the Chamber of Commerce, past president of Statesboro Service League, active church member, and community volunteer. A Statesboro native, Ashley cheers on the Statesboro High School Blue Devils, the Bulloch Academy Gators, and Georgia Southern with equal force. She’s a great inspirational and motivational speaker too, often called on to address groups of both students and adults. There is just no end to her enthusiasm; it’s contagious. For her sweet, fun spirit, her community involvement, and her ability to lead, our readers voted her Most Fabulous Woman of 2015!

Francys Johnson is not only president of Georgia’s state chapter of the NAACP, he is the youngest to ever hold the office. Francys is also the pastor of three local churches, principal in an active law firm, past president of the Averitt Center for the Arts, an engaging public speaker, and advocate for the disenfranchised. With Francys, there is no free time. When he’s not defending a client’s civil rights, he is at the state capitol leading the Moral Monday Movement, or he’s lecturing students at Savannah State and Georgia Southern on race and politics. A graduate of the University of Georgia’s School of Law, Francys’ work reflects his beliefs in one big community– “there are no black and white issues. There are only red, white, and blue issues – American issues.” Most Fabulous Cup of Joe – Cool Beanz

Most Fabulous Man of 2015 – Doug Lambert

5

2 Some of our readers said about Doug Lambert: “a great community leader,” “fun personality,” “everybody loves Doug!” His good nature and great sense of humor are a perfect combination for his role as Mr. Hospitality in Statesboro. Doug has been a key part of the travel industry in southeast Georgia since the 1970s. He has developed several hotels in town, including the Fairfield Inn by Marriott and the Holiday Inn. One of the original founders of the Statesboro Convention & Visitors Bureau, Doug has served as president of the SCVB, the Chamber of Commerce, and Downtown Rotary. He serves on the Foundation Board at OTC and on the COBA Board at Georgia Southern. He’s always been a community servant with progressive ideas – moving Statesboro forward. Hobbies include planes and automobiles, very fitting for a travel industry icon. Most Involved Couple of 2015 – Tim & Lori Durden

3 The Durdens are one of those couples that you see everywhere, doing everything. Whether it’s representing the Board of Regents at a ribbon cutting or attending an auction for Georgia Southern Football, the parents of three freely lend their time and energy as community volunteers and fundraisers. In 2015 the Durdens were Statesboro’s hosts for a Leadership Georgia group of over 100 statewide movers-and-shakers. They showcased Statesboro by planning tours, activities, parties, and meals for the group for three days, coordinating locations, caterers, and entertainment. It’s no wonder our readers voted Lori and Tim Durden Statesboro’s Most Involved Couple of 2015. They’re winners for making Statesboro shine!

You can smell the aroma of fresh baked goods and rich espresso when you walk into one of the finest bakery and coffee shops in Statesboro. At Cool Beanz inside CAKE, you get a cup of Joe that is fresh-roasted and fresh-ground. No roasted bean more than one month old is stored or ground. Owner David Hoyle is a coffee enthusiast and it shows in the piping hot cups he serves. If you’re looking for an authentic coffee experience, taste the difference at Cool Beanz. 58 East Main Street 912.681.2253. www.cakeandcoolbeanz.com Most Fabulous Overall Restaurant in Statesboro – 40 East Grill

6 The Friendly Downtown Eatery “40 East,” as it’s known by the locals, is truly a crowd favorite. The staff knows how to please diners with discriminating tastes. Entrees are created using the freshest local ingredients with rotating specials showcasing the variety of the season. The dinner menus are truly fabulous, and the flexible lunch menu is also just right for a quick business lunch. It’s a great gathering spot, especially for those who work downtown. In the evenings after work, the cozy bar fills with a Happy Hour crowd enjoying mixed drinks and a decent list of wines. A winner last year in four Fabulist categories, 40 East is definitely a downtown dining destination. www.40eastgrill.com. 40 East Main Street. 912.764.4040. March/April 2016 • 15

He’s pulled the Butts & Brews hog-size grill all the way to Las Vegas to compete against some of the nation’s best Q. STATESBORO BANK A DIVISION OF GLENNVILLE BANK

16 Most Fabulous Local Photographer – Frank Fortune Full disclosure first – for the past 17 years, Frank Fortune has been the principal photographer for Statesboro Magazine, having photographed every cover, except for two (there’s a trivia question for you). If you’re looking at a great photograph in a local magazine, advertisement, sports program, or marketing catalog, chances are Frank’s flash highlighted the picture first. Frank is a master of light and a perfectionist, producing images with his camera the same way Norman Rockwell did with his paint brush: classic, emotional, iconic. He’s won national awards for his work and is a sought after lecturer at universities on the art and skill of photography. He’s been making Statesboro and Georgia Southern look fabulous for over 30 years.

Is there anything else that you would like to share about your special day? We were so honored by the presence of many wonderful friends and family that helped celebrate our special day. Our parents, friends, and family showed us unconditional love and support throughout the entire wedding process. During the ceremony, my father, Dess Smith, sang “The Lord’s Prayer” and my aunt, Anna Kate Willoughby, sang “Make You Feel My Love.” Pratt’s cousin, Robert Lovett, read I Corinthians 13: 4-13. The cake knife used to cut the wedding cake was hand made by Pratt’s father, Harry Mathews. The knife was hand engraved and had an ivory handle. Another special feature at the reception was a wedding beer Pratt created and brewed. The beer was a kettle-soured saison, and it had a red hue from all of the strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries that were used during the brewing process. It was delicious! Spring in Statesboro is the Time to Think Green

S

Spring is a great time to remember that this earth on which we live is alive. It’s a vast ecosystem, providing air, water, plants, soil and all the resources necessary to sustain life. So this year as you’re going through your house, throwing open the windows and doing a little “spring cleaning,” take a few minutes to think about how you and your family are using Earth’s resources every day. Lissa Leege, a biology professor and director of the Center for Sustainability at Georgia Southern, says that most Americans are using more resources than they should — more than our planet can sustain. “There’s an old Sioux proverb that says, ‘The frog does not drink up the pond in which it lives,’” she said. “If we use up the resources in our pond, then we’ve got no place to live. We have to use them in a sustainable way.” Leege says adopting a more sustainable lifestyle can start with some simple changes in behavior that won’t stress your family or empty your pocketbook — it just might make you feel like a better person and probably save you money in the long run. A truly green landscape Less than one percent of the earth’s water is actually available and accessible for humans to use. The average American family uses 320 gallons of water per day, and a third of that water goes to the lawn and other outdoor usages. Statesboro has mandatory restrictions for outdoor water use, but allows exemptions for people who find creative sources of water. Leege collects her rinse water and dehumidifier water for her indoor and outdoor plants. She also suggests choosing native Georgia plant species that don’t require as much water to survive. To learn more about these species and to see them on display, visit the Botanic Garden at Georgia Southern. A garden too far The average American meal travels 1,500

miles before it is consumed. Considering the wealth of agriculture in Bulloch County, try locally grown and raised options thereby eliminating the gas and emissions to move items from countries as far away as China to your grocer. A more sustainable way of eating, says Leege, is to take advantage of Statesboro’s Main Street Farmers Market — one of the best of its kind in the state — where you can buy locally grown vegetables and locally raised meat while supporting the local economy and your local farmer. The Market opens on Saturday, April 2nd, at 9:00 a.m., in Charlie Olliff Square next to Sea Island Bank on East Main Street. The lengthy South Georgia growing season provides a great option for starting a garden of your own — tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans all grow remarkably well in a backyard or in patio containers. Even a simple herb garden on a windowsill can be rewarding and a cost-saver. A truckful of trash Have you ever stopped to think about where your trash goes when you toss it? The Bulloch County landfill has been closed for more than 20 years, so each bag of trash you toss is trucked 70 miles to Jesup, Georgia. Georgia Southern trucks all of its waste 120 miles away to Macon, Georgia. And when those landfills close, what then? “We’ve got to do better,” said Leege. “Reduce, reuse, recycle — in that order.” To reduce your trash output, Leege suggests buying less grocery items boxed up in packaging or in plastic wrap. Bring your own reusable grocery bags to the store and avoid using plastic bags. Instead of purchasing water in bottles, buy a reusable water jug to bring to work or buy a reusable coffee mug to refill at your favorite coffee shops. Leege says recycling is important, but it is the last resort after reducing and reusing. In Bulloch County, there are currently 17 recycling centers. Convenient to most resi-

dents, the centers take No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, glass, paper, cardboard and metals. To see a map of recycling center locations, visit www.KeepBullochBeautiful.org. Leege says being a responsible resident of Earth doesn’t have to be a chore. It’s a matter of thinking about the simple ways in which you can keep your home and your family healthy and beautiful, which makes a difference in the world. “You do what you can,” she said. “And everyone can do something. Once you’ve done one thing, then it’s easier to do two, and people watch you. “If you set a good example, people will follow it.” March/April 2016 • 67

The Spiritual Pathway s Rev. Dr. H. William Perry

Less Stress, More Joyful Living

W When surveys are taken to determine the greatest problems facing Americans today, the number one on most lists is stress. It goes by different names: tension, strain, anxiety, to name a few. But I just call it stress. I have come to the conclusion that stress is an inescapable part of living. We all have to deal with it, even pastors/ preachers. I still laugh at the story I first heard years ago of the pastor who came into the sanctuary with the choir to begin the worship service. He sat on the platform, looked out into the congregation, and nearly fell out of his chair, for sitting out in the crowd was his former prison cellmate. No one in the church knew that he had once been in prison. After the choir sang the call to worship the pastor stood at the pulpit, opened his Bible, and said, “I read from Micah 8:1 (by the way, there are only seven chapters in Micah): ‘If thou seeth me and

thinkest that thou knowest me, say nothing, and I will speak with thee afterward.’ What stress! Through the years I have kept up with what the social scientists say are the leading causes of stress. For years the leading stressor was the death of a spouse. I noticed recently that another stressor has risen to the top: childhood trauma. Apparently the studies are now showing that more adults carry stress today from difficulties they experienced in childhood, like death of a parent, divorce, abuse, and bullying. Other leading causes of stress are family problems, health issues, work difficulties, and financial troubles. Another stressor that has been inching upward since 2001 is terrorism. I suppose the major question is, “How can I keep stress from building up within me to the extent that I am overwhelmed, that

my health is destroyed, that I can no longer make wise decisions, that I am robbed of joy?” Let me make some suggestions: 1. Build a support system for your life. This would consist primarily of people with whom you can share what’s going on with you. We all need a few people who will listen to us without being judgmental. 2. Give some thought and study concerning what causes the most stress in your life, and what you can do about it. There are some excellent books and articles on the subject. 3. Develop some pass times or diversions that will help you get away from the stressors. And don’t feel guilty about getting away. Even Jesus left people who were in need and climbed up into the mountains to be alone with God. 4. Expose yourself to what makes you laugh. It is true that laughter is good medicine, and laughing can relieve a lot of the tension you feel. 5. Take a closer look at prayer and worship. I’m convinced that stress is a spiritual issue, and can best be handled through spiritual practices. This could also help you make good decisions. I ran across a concept written by Hans Selye that has opened my eyes on this issue of stress. Dr. Selye divides people into two categories: some of us are racehorses and some are turtles. Racehorses thrive on a fast-paced life, are highly motivated, competitive, aggressive, and often long for challenges, adventure, even danger. Others of us are turtles who move slowly, require peace and quiet, and are cautious and careful. Racehorses tend to be very impatient with turtles. They even give turtles the impression that there is something wrong with those who don’t run at their pace. Often racehorses and turtles get married to each other. Opposites do attract you know. And that is a setup for frustration that can lead to stress. We get impatient with each other, and have the attitude that our spouses ought to be like us. But no! Type A personality racehorses and Type B personality turtles can learn to appreciate each other. God doesn’t want us to all be alike anyway. In marriage, and in all other relationships, when we learn to accept those who are different we have moved a long way into solving the issue of stress. March/April 2016 • 69

Taking care of myself financially began when I was eleven and asked the guy who owned the Dock Junction Grocery if I could “bag” for him, pump gas, and rake around the front steps, on Saturdays. He said “yeah.” And with that, at the end of a twelvehour day, I walked home to Granny’s house with a crisp five-dollar bill in my pocket. A “fiver,” that is, until Granny explained to me how some of that belonged to the Lord. Gran’s word was law. Each Saturday evening found me showing Granny a fifty-cent piece, which I pledged I would drop into the collection

plate the next morning at church. I never really had a choice about giving the Lord a “share,” with the usher smiling down at me and Granny smiling at me with pride and Christian appreciation. I’ve come a long way since those days at the Dock Junction grocery. And so has the world. Back then, a nickel bought a cold drink. A whole bunch of candy could be purchased for just a penny. A bus ride to town was ten cents. A nice man’s shirt was $3.95. And most ties were a dollar. Gas: thirty-five cents a gallon. Milk: fifteen cents a quart. And life was simple. There was just one car to a family. One phone in the home. Children filled their conversations with “Yes ma’am,” and “No, sir.” Visions of Superman filled the room, as voices flowed from the small brown radio

with its yellowish dial. Bedtime was nine. Except for Fridays and Saturdays. “Pretending” was every kid’s companion. Television was an advent yet to invade that wonderful section of a young mind. So, I sit here, writing on my computer about yesterday: my bagging groceries, pumping gas, and raking up late at night, each Saturday. Gone are the nickel drinks and the dime bus rides. And so are the simple ways of living . . . as many summer nights I’d sit on Gran’s front porch watching the flare and the flight of fireflies making childlike patterns against the night, and listening to the cacophony concert created by the crickets as they danced about in the small glen nestled just across the road from the house where I lived for ten wonderful years with my Granny.
