Keely Fennell Woman of the Year WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK FORTUNE

S

he’s perky, she’s enthusiastic about Statesboro’s future, and she’s dedicated to making this town a great place to live for everyone. Our readers noticed her commitment, and this year voted Keely Fennell as Statesboro’s Most Fabulous Woman of the Year! By day she helps brother, Kyle, run Nesmith Construction Company. A company started by their father, Donald Nesmith. During her spare time, she’s always advocating for our community. Whether it’s joining a delegation in promoting Statesboro during the America’s Best Community Contest or Serving as President of the Blue Mile Foundation, Keely Fennell is invested in projects that have the momentum to keep Bulloch County moving forward. Keely finds the strength to handle her many responsibilities through her faith, her family and her coworkers, who manage the business well while she’s out serving the community. “Faith has been a big part of my life. I have been given so many blessings,” said Keely. “I believe the Lord has a hand in helping to make all the connections, and in bringing together all the people it takes to make these things happen.” Keely connected with husband, Bo Fennell, in high school. “I mean, who finds their life partner in the 10th grade? I know God had a hand in that and he continues to bless me and my family. Bo and I have aged well together,” she said. “We are two halves of one whole. When I’m down, he brings me up, and the same works for him.” They share college-age children: daughter, Powell, a student at Georgia Tech; and son, Charlie, a student at Georgia Southern. “We have always called Statesboro home,” said Keely. “I have great pride in the legacy our parents have created for me and Kyle. Mom and Dad taught us the business. They worked their butts off. And they taught us by example to

always give back to the community.” Donald and Kathy built Nesmith Construction Company, developing many of the area’s most prestigious residential neighborhoods. In 1998, Keely and Kyle took over the company’s management and operations. Both are Georgia Southern graduates, each majoring in areas that benefit their careers. Keely majored in business management and Kyle chose construction management. Being True Blue is one of the many reasons they believe in investing their time and resources in Statesboro. “We have a really good team at Nesmith that allows me time to serve the community,” said Keely. She’s been serving for some time. Keely has been on the boards of directors of several area non-profits, and has served as president of the Statesboro/Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce, Statesboro Service League, Home Builders Association of Statesboro, and most recently as President of the Blue Mile Foundation. The foundation is entrusted with directing Statesboro’s contest winnings of $1 million to be used for the revitalization of the one mile corridor between Georgia Southern’s US Highway 301 entrance and downtown Statesboro. So far, several new businesses have located on the Blue Mile, a bronze statue of Blind Willie McTell has been installed at the Visitors Center on South Main, and a new project, The Creek on the Blue Mile, is in development. “It has been exciting to see so many things happening,” said Keely. “For the first time in several years, you can feel a momentum building in the community. Several of our community business leaders have a vision for what Statesboro can be, and I love seeing that on the horizon.” Keely has her eyes on the future, continuing a legacy of service to the community, making it a better place for her own children, and for their children. “I really believe that the best is yet to come,” she said. Most Involved Couple DeWayne & Lori Grice WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS

T

he winners of our 2019 Fabulist’s Most Involved Couple category believe that their gift lies in being able to connect people. This year marks 32 years that DeWayne and Lori Grice have been making those connections. “It’s not us,” said DeWayne. “We haven’t done that much, but we have found that we can bring people together, and we can match resources to those in need.” For example, during Hurricane Matthew, a category five storm that blew through Bulloch County in October 2016, DeWayne, Business Editor of the Statesboro Herald, became immediately aware of the devastation the storm had caused. “People who were able to communicate through social media, were posting about power outages, downed trees, damage to buildings and vehicles,” said DeWayne. “They were posting questions about what to do and who to call. They wanted to know when power would be restored; when trees would be cleared from streets; where they could go for food.” That’s when DeWayne saw the need for one place residents could go to for information and updates on available services. “That was the beginning of Grice Connect,” DeWayne said. “We started calling on people we knew to match talents to needs. It was an organic effort that was fascinating to watch. At first we didn’t realize the level of destruction and how many people were affected. When we started preparing meals for people who had no electricity and no food, we were serving 2,800 meals per day. It lasted for four days. On the third day, we had one jar of peanut butter and one loaf of bread. We all prayed over it and said, ‘let’s try for 700.’ We went home and came back the next morning to find we had enough donations to feed 2,100. It is a real life ‘fishes and loaves’ story.” The Grice’s motivation to be involved is many non-profit initiatives within the community stems from a common upbringing that they discovered they shared when dating. “I grew up in Claxton, and Lori grew up in Statesboro,” said DeWayne. “I never knew my biological father, and Lori was raised by a single mother. Both of our mothers got pregnant out of wedlock at an early age. There was a stigma attached to girls in that situation back then. My grandparents basically raised me. My mother ended up having a career, and I had a great step-father, but my grandparents adopted me and gave me my mother’s maiden name. At the time my mother was unable to support me. I found out I was adopted at age 12.” Because of their similar pasts, the Grices understand accidents and about others who are willing to step up and give unconditionally in the aftermath. “My grandparents were influential, too,” said Lori. “Also my aunt and uncle, Kathy and Gil Riggs. They helped raise me. I can remember living in a single wide trailer with Mama and standing in front of the oven to get warm while I was getting ready for school.”

“Our backgrounds are part of our foundation and are part of the reason we feel the way we do about helping others,” said DeWayne. “My grandfather was very humble, giving, and smart. He taught me two very valuable things: live below your means and be kind to everyone. The power of his sacrifice for me is unimaginable.” Because of those life lessons, the Grice’s are committed to giving back to the community and to helping whenever they see a need, whether it be for the community as a whole, or for one of the causes they support. DeWayne has served the American Heart Association on the local, state and national levels. While Lori, a cervical cancer survivor, has done the same for the American Cancer Society. “When I was diagnosed with cancer, Edie Grace, (the Grice’s only child), was 14-months-old,” said Lori. “DeWayne and I prayed and asked God to hold us together until we would get Edie Grace on firm footing. I prayed ‘please let me live until she is five so she will remember me.’ I realized then that the only way she would be able to remember me would be through photographs. That’s when I realized that photography was my gift from God, and he was telling me to use it.” Lori and DeWayne considered leaving Statesboro when she was diagnosed, taking some time off to cope with their new reality, but they soon realized they were being led to stay. “I felt a responsibility to continue with my photography. I had a new perspective and I wanted to be able to capture those moments in time for others,” said Lori. During this time the Grice’s spiritual growth was strengthened by a close relationship with Dr. Michael Guido, known for his radio ministry, A Seed from the Sower, and founder of a ministerial retreat, Guido Gardens, in Metter. “Dr. Guido taught us the value of prayer and taught us that there were three components: 1.) Know specifically what you want when you pray. 2.) Have the confidence that you deserve what you are praying for and prepare for it. 3.) Have the faith that God would answer the prayer. The strong faith that he helped to instill in us in praying over Lori when she was pregnant with Edie Grace, and when she was diagnosed, showed us what we needed to focus on in our lives,” said DeWayne. The “Ministry” of connecting others. “Our story is really about this community,” said DeWayne. “It is known for always helping when called upon.” “We are blessed to know so many people with the same heart, who want to also meet needs when they arise,” said Lori. Their work is evident in the success of initiatives like Feed the Boro, the Heart and Hands Clinic, and the Averitt Center for the Arts. All causes that the Grice’s feel led to serve. “We have found that in case after case, God steps in if you command a need,” said Lori. “And in all cases, He has exceeded all of our expectations.” S March/April 2019 • 19

man of the year

Billy Hickman Man of the Year WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK FORTUNE

A

long-time visionary and outstanding member of the community, Billy Hickman, 2019’s Man of the Year, has dedicated his life to making Statesboro and Bulloch County a great place to live. “I love this place!” said Billy. “I was born here, raised here, went to college here, got a job here, and raised my family here. There is no better place. And, there’s not a single thing in my life I would change.” Even though Billy’s life started humbly in a house that had no plumbing until he was 11-years-old. “We were poor growing up,” he said. “My dad died when I was 17. That was a big blow, we were best buddies. I knew he loved me. He kissed me and he told me that he loved me.” Billy’s father, William Rhett Hickman, Sr., was a welder and construction worker who died at the age of 56. “He spent time with us. He worked hard, but he never took a job that would keep him so far away that he couldn’t come home on weekends,” said Billy. In 1974, after graduating from Georgia Southern College, Billy accepted a position with an established accounting firm in Statesboro, now known as Dabbs, Hickman, Hill & Cannon, LLP. He became partner in the firm in 1983, and served as business manager from 1998 to 2008. “Earl Dabbs was a great mentor to me,” said Billy. “He taught me so many things. He was constantly looking for ways to make things better. Earl would say, ‘Only a few will step up to make things happen.’ In my professional life, I have followed his leadership. If I hear, ‘Someone needs to do it.’ Then, I will.” Early in his career, he was asked by local attorney Kenny Stone to chair a committee to get a leg of the planned Savannah/Augusta Highway to come through Statesboro. At the time, there wasn’t even a route planned through Bulloch County. “We partnered with Millen and were able to get a fourlane highway west of town,” said Billy. “I feel like we made a difference with that project.” Throughout his career, Billy has served in so many leadership roles, in so many organizations, there is not room enough to list them all. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Southern University Foundation, Inc., as well as the Advisory Council for the School of Accountancy. He serves on the Boards of Directors for Excelsior Membership Corporation, East Georgia Regional Medical Center, and the Lynda Brannen William-

son Foundation, Inc. He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of First Baptist Church of Statesboro and Co-founder of TRAC4 of Statesboro, LLC. “But, I couldn’t do anything without the support of the firm,” he said. “My partners and our employees help keep me organized, they make phone calls, and they arrange meetings. I couldn’t have done anything without them.” And without his faith. Billy cites Romans 8:28, as a scripture that speaks especially to him. And we know that all things work together for the good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (KJV) “I wish I had the faith in my youth that I have now,” said Billy. “When I met Dr. Michael Guido, I was instantly drawn to him. He was about the same height as my father and they both had snow white hair. He was instrumental in helping me to further develop my spiritual life, and to serve a greater purpose.” Mentoring young men has become a purpose that Billy finds rewarding both spiritually and professionally. “Some friends and I have started to meet with a small group of about 10 young business owners from the area. We meet for half-a-day once a month to share the burdens of running a business and to find strength through each other and through our faith,” he said. “We call it TRAC4. Which stands for Transparency, Relationships, Accountability, and Confidentiality. We sort of act as a board of directors for each other’s businesses, lending guidance and support. There’s a tremendous amount of trust that has developed there and we all feel we are contributing something positive to each other and to the community.” Last year TRAC4 gave away over $10,000 to a total of seven deserving community organizations. A proud accomplishment. But if you ask Billy what he is most proud of, he will tell you, “my family.” “I’m a hugger and a kisser just like my dad. I tell my sons, Rusty and Rhett, and my wife Jo Ann, that I love them,” he said. “I want then to know how much they mean to me and how proud I am of them all.” Including his five grandchildren. “I want this town to be better and better,” Billy said. “I am never satisfied with the status quo. I want all kids to have opportunities, and I want them never to leave Statesboro because there’s a lack of resources or jobs. Because, I love this town! It’s really just a great place to live.” S March/April 2019 • 23

For us, the thought of a big wedding was very overwhelming. It was important for us to focus on the true purpose of our wedding day, the celebration of our love and commitment to each other. For these reasons, we chose to have an intimate wedding with less than forty people in attendance. The best part about having a small wedding was being able to spend more time with our families and with each other on our wedding day. We were also able to incorporate sentimental elements, such as using my mom’s wedding china for the reception. March/April 2019 • 63

Pecan Crusted Chicken with Pimento Cheese and Strawberry Balsamic Glaze WRITTEN BY LAZAR BROWN OGLESBY

W

hen the first hints of emerald, lime, and sage start to peak through the fields and forests of South Georgia my mind begins wandering to my favorite spring activities. I hear the crack of the bat hitting a homerun ball, feel the sun browning my bare toes as I kayak down the Ogeechee, and I smell the sweetness of a batch of strawberry preserves simmering on the stove at my family’s kitchen house. As the gloomy days of winter pass, I know the earth will soon flourish with new life. Each spring I anticipate the drive down Hwy 17 to Jacob’s Strawberry Farm. The long beds of strawberries glistening in the sun are waiting to be picked by little fingers and grandmothers’ hands alike. My crimson stained hands dripping with the sweet juices of my labor inspire me to create new recipes and remember old favorites. My love affair with strawberries began when my grandmother and I planted a strawberry pot. The urn shaped terracotta pot was placed at her back door where we routinely checked the plants for the first sign of a white bloom and as the blooms faded, we anxiously awaited signs of our newest berry. It seemed to take months for those green berries studded with tiny seeds to grow pink, then red and ripe for the picking. We enjoyed those berries warm off of the bush or sliced in our favorite cereal. She is gone now and I don’t know what happened to our strawberry pot. I know planting that sweet little pot each spring would evoke fond memories of our days together. A spring staple of my mother’s Sunday dinner is her strawberry short cake, buttery pound cake topped with sliced strawberries tossed with a hint of sugar, and finished off with a heaping spoonful of fresh whipped cream. The cake soaks up the juices from the macerated berries like a sponge and the cream wilts over the top like melting snow. This recipe has stood the test of time, and I know I will serve it for many years to come. As the days grow longer, I sense a new season approaching. A season of growth and promise. I am reminded of a melody and I start to hum as my mind wanders to sun-kissed field of berries. “In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; In cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be, Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. There’s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody; There’s a dawn in every darkness, bringing hope to you and me. From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery, Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; In our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity, In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory, Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.” Natalie A. Sleeth The recipe below is a combination of favorite dishes. The pecan crusted chicken is a throw back to my early career as a chef at Statesboro Brews. We served this popular dish with house made whole grain honey mustard with hints of dill weed. The pimento cheese and strawberries are reminiscent of The Plains Cheese Ring made popular by First Lady Rosalynn Carter. My grandmother served this at Christmas as an appetizer. The addition of the balsamic vinegar adds a nice acidic flavor to the strawberries and helps thicken the sauce as it cooks. Each element of this recipe could stand alone or be added to another dish to create a new recipe! March/April 2019 • 77

Grow as a palm tree on God’s Mt. Zion WRITTEN BY REV. DR. H. WILLIAM PERRY

I

grew up with a palm tree in our front yard. Palm trees were not native to our area of Florida, but the city bought some to place on the streets of downtown Live Oak, and when they finished planting them one was left over. Daddy bought it and had it put in our front yard. I learned a lot from watching that tree. For one thing, the palm tree grows from the inside out. The oak, pecan, and pine trees in our yard grew from the outside. You drive a nail in those trees, and before long the nail would be invisible, hidden by the new growth on their trunks. Not so with the palms. You drive a nail on the trunk of the palm and it stays right there, no matter how big around the trunk gets. It’s sort of like a balloon: as you blow it up it gets bigger but the surface stays the same. I found that quite interesting. Something else I learned about palm trees: storms make their roots go deeper into the Earth. We had a lot of storms in Live Oak, the result of hurricanes that moved in around us. Often we would lose the native trees to those heavy winds, but I never saw a palm tree blown down. I got curious about that and did some research. I found out that the winds set up a vibration in the palm trees, and that vibration made the roots grow deeper. So that rather than destroying the palms the storms made them grow stronger. 78 • Statesboro Magazine

One other thing I learned about palm trees: they will not grow in an unclean environment. After I left home to go to college I came home one Christmas and found that the palm tree was no longer in its place in the front yard; it had died. Daddy didn’t seem to know what caused its death, so again, I did some research. I found that palm trees will not live in an unclean environment. When Daddy and I talked about it I found that the sewer pipes that ran along the street in front of our house had developed leaks and had to be replaced. The city didn’t know how long the leaks had been going on, but it must have been long enough for the dirty water to make its way underground to the roots of the palm tree, some 15 feet from the street. I hated to lose that precious tree. A few years ago, I was reading slowly through the Psalms in the Bible, and I ran across a statement that I had previously overlooked, although I must have read it a dozen times. “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree.” (Psalm 92:12). Those who are in a right relationship with God will grow like palm trees. I guess that means that we are to grow from the inside out, that life’s storms make us grow stronger, and that we can’t expect true growth to take place in an unclean environment. Very interesting. Now if I will only put those principles into practice.

Remembering Erk WRITTEN BY RIC MANDES

On a sunny Saturday morning in May, 1981, the destiny of Georgia Southern College was reshaped forever. This profound moment took place in the W.S. Hanner Field House when the nationally acclaimed disciple of defensive college football, Erk Russell, walked into Hanner. The groundswell of the standing ovation of Southern students rocked the rafters. Erk’s standing before them, accompanied by President Dale Lick and Athletic Director Dr. Bucky Wagner, was the assured sign that put weeks of speculation to rest. Erk Russell was coming to town to restart football, an activity laid to rest when the 1941 Blue Tide players replaced football helmet for army steel. And the stadium grew weeds as WWII drafted all men walking to Europe and the foxholes thereof. Now with the world at peace the ubiquitous question arose in the late 1940’s through 1980, “When are we going to bring football back?” Four presidents heard these words “of when,” and countered with “the impossible.” Until Lick. On a September 1980 afternoon, Dr. Lick and I were moving onto Interstate 95, headed home following his addressing the Brunswick Rotarians. The silence was relinquished when Dale said quietly, surrounded with calm, “Ric, I have decided to bring football back. I want you and Bucky to help me get it done.” 80 • Statesboro Magazine

Thus began the jumbo-la of alumni and friends with the oddity of either “Has Dale gone nuts?” to: “Way you go, Mr. President!” Heavy speculation lay deep within both responses. The reality was, no coach, uniforms, equipment, no stadium and where in the hell are the dollars? Meanwhile the University of Georgia Bulldogs were headed for a brilliant 1980 season, becoming the victors of the national contest on January 1, 1981. Leading the Dawgs to victory was defensive coordinator, Erk Russell. For seventeen years, Russell was the cornerstone for the Red and Black. National acclaim was his apposition. All Division -1 coaches knew of Erk. His position at Georgia was as solid as the poised stance he held, much like the Statue of Liberty. Russell was a mighty man. Broad shoulders, bald head and a presence like that of Atlas. And oh yes, he liked cigars and a cold one at the end of the day. Bucky was underway for the new stadium with a gift-in-kind by M.C. Anderson Construction, ($750,000), to dig the massive hole and a tidy $1 million from Allen Paulson, President and founder of Gulfstream Aerospace. Thus reality was really coming into focus. The remaining dominant question left on the table, “Where is a coach?” For certain the search was on. And the list was blighted with hesitation by all candidates. But, little did we know the heavenly grace of the stars lining up was taking place. It was a Friday afternoon in February 1981, when Lick called and asked me to join him in his office. In I walk; a seat I take. Dale looks at me and states, “I am going to say two words, let me know what you think. ERK RUSSELL. Frank Inman, once the offensive coordinator for the Dawgs, then retired, called Dale earlier that day and said calmly, “Mr. President I have a dear friend who just touched base with me to check out what was taking place at your college. His name is Erk Russell.” Now, Lick was looking straight at me and said, “Let’s make this happen.” And we did! Of course such news leaps from confidential to rumor followed by total disbelief of “no way!” Oh yes. Indeed. After a month of phone conversations and two personal visits, it was seven in the morning the first of May, my phone rang. “Mandes, I just talked to Dr. Lick and told him if he would pay me a dollar more than my current salary I am his coach. Now I want to do whatever in the hell we need to do in letting folks know. I have the complete support of the family, Jean and the boys just looked at me and said ‘Go for it!’ I am booked tomorrow night to speak to the Wrightsville Bulldog club, how about you putting something together for this Saturday morning?” And we did. In 1989, Erk retired with a perfect season of fifteen victories and no defeats and the Eagles third National Championship against Stephen F. Austin. Their first Championship was in 1985, when Eagle quarterback Tracy Ham shot a bullet into the hands of Frankie Johnson crossing like a phantom in the end zone. Their victim was Furman University 44/42. They took their second title in 1986 defeating Arkansas State. This is a story of Camelot. A narrative of never before dreams coming to life. Something for Georgia Southern students to do on fall Saturday afternoons. Allowing this mighty man a program of his own as he closed out a career like none other. By the way, when Erk started his walking Blue Nation sidelines, six thousand students were enrolled. As he closed the curtain, sixteen thousand were taking classes. He became one of my dearest friends. Maybe one day, I will offer some of my favorite Coach’s recounts. Like the illustration he used in telling the Atlanta Bulldog Club how tough his Dawg defense was going to be that season. The convincing discussion given his Eagles on the danger of using drugs involving the sudden appearance of several angry rattle snakes.
