hile other rural areas across the state are losing local hospitals to closures, we in Bulloch County are fortunate to have East Georgia Regional Medical Center with over 600 employees and over 95 physicians representing a wide range of specialties to serve our area. EGRMC has 149 private patient rooms with full baths, telephones, television and Wi-Fi access. Plus a Women’s Pavilion dedicated to the unique health concerns of women, offering a full range of services, education opportunities and maternity care. In this issue we highlight the doctors of EGRMC in the official 2019 Physicians Guide. You’ll find information on each physician and their specialties beginning on page 19. We’re also featuring another area provider of multiple wellness services, Optim Healthcare. We sit down with orthopedic specialist Dr. Delan Gaines to learn about the specific demands of providing orthopedic support to area athletes. We also learn about the other doctors on the Optim team who keep the Eagles, the Blue Devils, the Yellow Jackets, the Panthers and the Gators healthy and playing to win! The “Smile Doctors,” Suketu and Anjali Patel, offer another perspective on staying healthy. A surgeon with East Georgia Center for Oral & Facial Surgery, Suketu has been practicing in Statesboro for over six years and has just opened a new office and surgery center in the Market District. Anjali has been practicing pediatric dentistry in Swainsboro, with Emanuel Dental Center, but will be opening a new office in Statesboro this summer. Both are actively involved in the Statesboro community and are looking forward to providing exceptional dental services for the area. A very special addition to this issue is a section beginning on page 59, devoted to locally owned and operated Joiner Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory. Joiner Anderson is the only funeral home in the area that owns a crematory, a monument company and a cemetery. This special section provides all of the answers to questions you may have about those final arrangements, before the time comes. The professionals at Joiner Anderson offer arrangement conferences for funeral pre-planning to provide peace of mind for you and your family. Don’t miss our annual “Summer Fun” section, a feature devoted to filling those lazy hot days with plenty to do in and around Statesboro. Full of camps for children, you’ll find something entertaining and educational to keep them busy during the summer break. Keep this magazine on hand as a reference guide to the superior healthcare professionals who serve the Statesboro area, and use the special section on Joiner Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory as a resource in helping you plan for the future. You can find both digital versions throughout the year on our website at www.statesboromagazine.com. Enjoy!

LIVING WELL

The Smile Doctors WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK FORTUNE

T

reating patients like family. That’s the philosophy embraced by smile doctors, Suketu and Anjali Patel. Both board certified dentists, Suketu is an M.D. as well, and together they are celebrating new developments in their respective practices in Statesboro. An oral surgeon by training, Suketu was working in New Jersey, after completing his residency at the University of Pennsylvania Health System/Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, when Dr. Rodrigo Uribe invited Suketu to join his practice, East Georgia Center for Oral and Facial Surgery, in Statesboro. “It was where I wanted to be,” said Suketu. “My parents were in Chicago and I came to hate the cold weather. We were also attracted to the small town life. My wife is a native of Milledgeville, and we thought Statesboro provided a similar quality of life, while being close to her family.” Anjali was the 2002 valedictorian of Baldwin High School in Milledgeville. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at Villanova University in 2005, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 2009. That’s where she met Suketu. “I had a difficult extraction during dental school, and I needed some assistance,” she said. “Suketu was older and further along in school, so I asked him to help me.” They were married in Atlanta in 2010, after she graduated from dental school and between Suketu’s residencies in general surgery and in oral and maxillofacial surgery at University of Pennsylvania Health System. Both chose dentistry because they wanted to help people and because they wanted to make a difference. Also, because of the esthetics and the science involved. “I always thought dentistry might be a great way to integrate my artistic ability with my scientific curiosity,” said Anjali.

LIVING WELL

the smile doctors I believe that if you work hard, and take care of your patients like family, everything else will fall into place. - SUKETU PATEL

Going to the dentist was a positive experience for Suketu, something he wanted to recreate for his patients. “I loved going to the dentist as a kid and I enjoy working with my hands,” said Suketu. “I like the blend of science and taking care of people.” Both were also influenced by their respective family members, several of whom also pursued careers in medicine. Suketu’s sister is a pharmacist in the Chicago area, while Anjali’s brother is a pulmonologists in Milledgeville, where her father also practiced for over 40 years. Dentistry is a passion they share. Together they offer a full range of dental services for area patients. Earlier this year, Suketu opened new offices for East Georgia Oral and Facial Surgery at 1800 Brampton Avenue in the Market District. “Our new facilities offer up to date technology in dental medicine and space upstairs in a lecture hall especially designed for continuing education training for my staff, and my colleagues,” said Suketu. He believes in keeping abreast of the very latest techniques and practices in dental surgery. Suketu is a former Clinical Assistant Professor of Oral Surgery and Pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He is currently on staff at East Georgia Regional Medical Center and Emanuel Medical Center in Swainsboro, where a second office of his practice is located. He specializes in surgery with particular areas of interest in extraction of wisdom teeth, dental implants, bone grafting, biopsies, sedation, pediatric oral surgery, orthognathic surgery, facial trauma, oral and maxillofacial pathology, and TMJ disorders. Suketu takes pride in providing specialized and empathetic care to all of his patients. “I believe that if you work hard, and take care of your patients like family, everything else will fall into place,” said Suketu. Treating patients like family is a core value both doctors share. “I also believe in treating patients like family,” said Anjali. “It’s an excellent focus.” As the mother of 7-year-old Rayan and 5-year-old Lara, Anjali is especially in tune with the needs of children and mothers when it comes to going to the dentist. 16 • Statesboro Magazine

“I worked as an adult dentist in the beginning of my career,” said Anjali. “I noticed with many of the patients there was a real fear of going to the dentist. I decided then to specialize in pediatric dentistry to try to affect change in the way patients perceive the dentist experience. Children are naturally enthusiastic and hold a positive outlook. I enjoy making their visits great experiences.” Anjali has created a child-focused practice with a jungle theme and a zebra mascot. A warm and inviting waiting area is designed just for kids. She puts patients at ease with exam rooms mirroring the jungle theme. There is a zebra room, a giraffe room and a cheetah room. The “fun” atmosphere is also reflected in her approach; most of her patients refer to her as “Dr. A.” “My goal is from the moment they enter, I want it to be positive and fun, until they leave,” she said. “Maintaining oral health is important, so we talk about teeth and brushing as positive experiences, which we hope will carry over into the home. We offer a child-friendly experience that puts children at ease immediately. I’m proud that my entire staff is trained in working with kids.” She offers complete dental care for children including sedation if needed. Anjali provides treatment for special needs children

and those with complex medical histories. She covers children ranging from infant to 18-years-old. “I really enjoy working with children and teens, it is very rewarding. I want them to have fun and leave with a smile,” she said. A board certified dentist, Anjali is also on staff at East Georgia Regional Medical Center and opens her new practice – Statesboro Pediatric Dentistry at 613 East Grady Street, in Statesboro – on May 7, 2019. She is already accepting new patients. Both of the doctors are active in the community. Suketu is a former “Dancing with the Statesboro Stars” contestant, raising funds for Safe Haven, the local women’s shelter. He is an active member of the Ogeechee River Medical Society and the East Georgia Physicians Group. Anjali is a former board member for Safe Haven and The Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County. She has also provided dental services to children in Nicaragua and Costa Rica on outreach dental mission trips. “We like being involved in the community, and the small town life we enjoy with our children here,” said Anjali. “We look forward to seeing new patients and familiar ones at our new locations.” S May/June 2019 • 17

SERVICES

B

uilt in July 2000, East Georgia Regional Medical Center is a four-level, 149 bed acute care hospital featuring a Women’s Pavilion and an adjacent medical office building. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a distinction awarded only to those healthcare facilities that maintain the highest standards of quality. East Georgia Regional Medical Center’s healthcare team consists of over 800 employees and nearly 100 physicians representing a wide range of specialties. The ongoing expansion of medical services and professionals, along with a major investment in technology, has firmly established East Georgia Regional‘s reputation for providing a higher medical standard. East Georgia Regional Medical Center offers a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department, a Level II neonatal center, outpatient services including endoscopy, same day surgery and ambulatory care, a pain management center, a wound care clinic, a cardiac catheterization lab, outpatient cardiac rehabilitation, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures including digital mammography, MRI, CT, PET/CT, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology. The Women’s Pavilion provides dedicated services to women of all ages, and includes eight labor, delivery and recovery suites. An Interventional Cardiology service was started in April 2010. This expansion of our cardiology program has allowed patients needing angioplasty and/or stent placement to receive these services without leaving Statesboro. Electrophysiology services were added to the cardiology program in August 2011. The addition of these services has dramatically increased the quality of care in our community. In October 2010, East Georgia Regional became one of only four hospitals in Southeast Georgia capable of performing robotic surgery. This highly specialized surgical tool allows surgeons to perform procedures that are less invasive and require less recovery time. Most recently, East Georgia Regional Medical Center began offering Bariatric Services, including both surgical and nonsurgical weight loss options in Fall of 2018. An interdisciplinary team of weight loss experts including board certified physicians, nurses, dietitians and other health care professionals, are available to provide highly personalized care for all patients. On the Sidelines With Dr. Delan Gaines WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK FORTUNE

here’s a trophy case right inside the patient entry way at Optim Healthcare’s Orthopedics and Therapy Center on Highway 67 South. Prominently displayed in it is a Georgia Southern football from the 100th game Erk Russell coached: GSC vs James Madison, November 9, 1989. The score was Eagles 36, Dukes 21. There’s also a basketball, soccer ball, baseball – all commemorative of special games in the history of sports at the University. On the top shelf is a special trophy presented to Optim as an MVP Partner with Georgia Southern Sports Properties. The award was presented to team doctors Dr. John Hodges, Dr. Don Aaron and Dr. Delan Gaines. Dr. Gaines joined the Optim team in 2010, after working with Dr. Hodges at East Georgia Orthopaedics from 2008 – 2010. Dr. Hodges was already working with Georgia Southern Athletics on providing care for student athletes at the time. “Dr. Hodges helped me become associated with the team,” said Dr. Gaines. Dr. Gaines really enjoys the diversity and challenges that working with athletes presents. “I enjoy that athletes are always trying hard to better themselves,” said Dr. Gaines. “They are always trying to maximize their body’s performance. I like being a part of helping the injured players return to normal health as quickly as possible. It’s just fun to combine sports with medicine.” Dr. Gaines grew up in Bowden, Georgia, near Carrollton, population around 1,800. He excelled in school, gaining an undergraduate degree in Psychology in 1997, from Furman University, and a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia in 2002. He completed an Orthopaedic residency at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in 2007, and a Sports Fellowship at Steadman-Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas in Greenville in 2008. He moved from Greenville to Statesboro and he has been practicing here for the past 12 years. He chose medicine because, “I was always fascinated with how the body works. I especially enjoy orthopedics because I get to make hands-on diagnoses, plus I get to fix problems with my hands,” said Dr. Gaines. “Sometimes we can fix a dislocated joint just by manipulating the patient. There’s immediate satisfaction in that. It’s not inva-

sive, there are no prescriptions and no surgery required. To be able to fix something with your hands is very rewarding.” Specializing in sports medicine has become a passion of Dr. Gaines’ especially when he can give a hopeful outcome to a player. He specializes in treatment of the shoulder. “I love being on the sidelines to help anytime a player gets injured,” said Dr. Gaines. “I also enjoy traveling with the teams and the comradery that we experience on the road with the coaches and the trainers.” Dr. Gaines, along with other Optim specialists, provides care for not only football, but also basketball, soccer, golf, volleyball - basically everything except baseball, which Dr. Don Aaron covers. “I go to the training room at Georgia Southern every Monday morning before visiting the office and on some Fridays,” Dr. Gaines said. “I evaluate the players and see if they need further testing or treatment.” This summer he will be helping to administer physical examinations for all the incoming athletes to make sure they are healthy enough to compete. Dr. Gaines works closely with the athletic trainers at the University, who are already working with the players, and are there when the doctors arrive. 46 • Statesboro Magazine

In addition to providing orthopedic care to the Eagles, Dr. Gaines, along with the other doctors at Optim, provides care for area high schools as well. “Occasionally when a player is warming up, he can experience a dislocated shoulder,” Dr. Gaines said. “Just to be there to put a joint back and have the player to be able to continue to play is rewarding. It is always sad when a player has a serious injury, and needs more extensive treatment or surgery. If they have to miss a season, that’s a tough conversation.” Dr. Gaines hopes to be able to continue to provide support to area teams for as long as he’s practicing. “I really enjoy being a part of the community,” he said. “I grew up in a very small town. I think this community is unique in the way the people are so caring, and so many work to make Statesboro a better place to live for everyone.” Dr. Gaines and wife, Brandy, give back by supporting important causes like United Way. Brandy serves on the board of directors. The couple are parents to sons, 7-year-old Jackson, and 4-year-old William. “You don’t find this quality of life in every town,” said Dr. Gaines. ”The quality of life is great and I think the University brings so much to the town that we wouldn’t have otherwise.” S

THE NEUROLOGICAL CENTER OF EAST GEORGIA, P.C. On rare occasions I will see an older male patient who will proudly declare to me that he has never had a headache in his whole life. At that point I congratulate the man because he and I both know how lucky he is. He knows it from a lifetime of hearing about the headache misery of others, and I know it because treating headaches is what I do several hours a week. On a statistical level it can be noted that 45 million people suffer from chronic headaches. That number surpasses the 33 million people combined who suffer from asthma, heart disease, and diabetes. It is also known that many, if not all of the chronic headache sufferers are experiencing some level of disability in their lives due to headaches. The disability comes in many forms such as time lost from work, time lost with the children, and recreational time lost. In the field of neurology we have made many advances in the diagnosis and treatment of headaches. This means that help is now available for all headache sufferers and what was once a hopeless situation for many can now become a cure. This is possible because of the collaborative efforts of hundreds of research and clinical neurologists over the last several years. In addition, there have been great strides in discovering and applying successful treatments including lifestyle interventions, natural health products, or prescription medi- MICHAEL TAORMINA, M.D. BOARD CERTIFIED IN NEUROLOGY, cation. The History Since December 1996, Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory has served as a locally owned provider of a wide range of funeral services. From the beginning, the cornerstone of Joiner-Anderson’s mission has remained steadfast: owners being onsite every day to, above all, serve others and provide the highest level of care for families who are experiencing grief and heartache. The genesis of this servant-leadership focus comes from the conviction of founder Tracy Joiner. Joiner began his apprenticeship at Smith-Tillman Mortuary, under the tutelage of funeral director Jake Smith, at age 18. From the start he understood clearly the sacred hallmark of the funeral business: to focus on families above all else. Having been reared in the small caring community of Leefield, Georgia, the importance of family, friends and building relationships, were values instilled at an early age. Joiner believed he could establish a true local community business built on face-to-face service, building relationships and establishing trust. He envisioned a business that would serve families in a very personal way. In December of 1995, Joiner, along with ten local investors, broke ground on a new type of funeral home, one that would provide local families serving local families in their time of need. One of the original investors in Joiner-Anderson was Mark Anderson, who served as the funeral home’s PreNeed Insurance Manager. In 1999, Joiner and Anderson acquired the funeral home from the original group of investors. Anderson began work as an Apprentice Funeral Director and was among the first students of Ogeechee Technical College’s Funeral Service Education Program. In 2004, Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home expanded services with the addition of an on-premise crematory and the purchase of a perpetual care cemetery in Statesboro, Bulloch Memorial Gardens. In December of 2008, JoinerAnderson expanded again opening the Screven County Chapel in Sylvania, Georgia, along with Phil Graham, Managing Partner, and Ed Thompson. Bulloch County native Bland Mathews began as an apprentice, following the path that Anderson took to become a funeral director, and joined Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory as an owner in November 2012. Mathews graduated from Bulloch Academy and attended Auburn University, earning a degree in Business Management in 2010. He then earned an Associates of Applied Technology in Funeral Services Education from Ogeechee Technical College in 2012. Today, Joiner-Anderson’s full line of funeral services are provided by over 30 dedicated full and part time employees with the highest level of professionalism, empathy and caring for families who are experiencing the loss of a loved one. Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory was recognized and honored by the Statesboro-Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce as Small Business of the Year in 2009, for outstanding commitment to upholding the highest standards of business ethics and practice and for demonstrating a high level of commitment to customers, employees and service to the community.

Planning Ahead What is Pre-planning Pre-planning is simply the process of designing plans for a funeral before one is needed. The process involves gathering a variety of family information and making the decisions about the type of funeral service one would like, (i.e. location, type of service, who should participate, etc.). Working together with a funeral director, you may plan, organize and record all of your special requests for your final arrangements. Our staff can lead you through the process, providing advice and guidance along the way. We will insure that you have all of the information needed about our products and services, to allow you to make informed decisions. Why Choose Pre-Planning The greatest motivation can be the desire to protect your family by ensuring they won’t face the difficult task of making arrangements at the time of loss. You may choose to pay for the arrangements in advance, or your plans can simply be held on file at the funeral home to be carried out when needed. What About Pre-Payment Choosing to pre-fund your arrangements is another way in which you can protect your family from unnecessary anxiety. For many, funeral pre-planning is an extension of the estate planning process. It is simply one more thing one can choose to take care of as one plans for retirement and the next stage of life. Should I Pre-Pay There are advantages to pre-planning to consider. Often accomplished during the years leading up to retirement, pre-planning can be accomplished during the highest earning years in which the most expendable income is available. For many this is the easiest time to take care of a potential future expense to the estate. Also, our pre-planning program offers a payment plan option that allows one to pay the cost of selected services and merchandise over a period of time. We recommend an insurance plan as the ideal way to take care of pre-plan arrangements. Insurance plans offer the flexibility and protection for the individual and the family. Coverage is available right away, even if one chooses to make payments over several months or years. Your funeral director will be able to tell you more about how these plans can work for you, and may be able to offer you additional choices and benefits depending upon the arrangements that you make.

Funeral Arrangements Whether you are planning for yourself or a loved one, the funeral service is one of the most important elements of a person’s final arrangements. With the opportunity for great personalization, the funeral service can truly reflect the uniqueness of the life it honors. Burial Plans One of the first decisions many make is whether they prefer traditional burial or cremation. This decision will influence other important considerations, such as elements of the funeral service and type of final resting place needed. Funeral Service Options A formal or informal ceremony or ritual prior to burial, a funeral service often provides a sense of closure for family and friends. Although your faith or culture may dictate some elements of the funeral service, the casket or urn is usually present, and you may choose for the casket to be open or closed. Visitation or Viewing Typically held the evening before, or immediately prior to the funeral service, the visitation – also known as the viewing – provides a way for friends and acquaintances to pay their respects and offer condolences to your family. The Funeral or Memorial Service When planning your own funeral service in advance, think about the way you would like to be remembered. You may prefer a traditional funeral aligned with certain religious or ethnic customs. Or, a celebration focusing on great memories made with family and friends. Maybe you would like a combination of both. You can have one service or several to honor your life. Regardless of the service or services you choose to include in your funeral plan, you can personalize them in almost any way imaginable. Consider the following questions when planning for your service(s): • Where should the funeral or celebration be held? At your place of worship? At the funeral home chapel? • Who should officiate the service? • Will your service adhere to traditions of faith or culture? • Do you want a eulogy? Who should deliver it? • Would you like an open or closed casket? • What music should be played? • What readings would you like to have read? • Are there any special photographs or other memorabilia that you would like to be displayed? • Should the décor reflect a specific hobby or interest of yours? Fishing? Gardening? Music? • Should refreshments be served or a more elaborate party held after the service?

Burial Most people are familiar with the concept of burial or interment, but may not be aware of the variety of options that are available. Many cemeteries offer: • Ground burial: burial of the casket below ground • Mausoleum: a large building that provides above-burial spaces, known as crypts, for entombment • Private Family Mausoleum: a small structure that provides above-ground entombment of on average two to twelve family members • Private Family Estate: a small section of a cemetery, usually bordered by gates, shrubbery or other dividers, that allow for ground burial of several members of the same family Cremation Many people overlook the importance of a cemetery property for those who choose cremation, but permanent placement of the ashes or “cremated remains” is an important part of the final arrangements. Just consider: • A permanent site gives loved ones a physical place for visitation and reflection • The ceremony accompanying the placement of an urn in a cremation niche or a cremation garden provides family and friends with closure after their loss • When cremated remains of a loved one are kept with relatives, they can easily become misplaced or discarded through the years. A permanent placement provides future generations a location to visit Cemetery Placement Options for Cremated Remains Columbarium: located within a mausoleum or chapel constructed of numerous niches designed to hold urns. Cremation Garden: a dedicated section of a cemetery designed for the burial, scattering or other permanent placement of cremated remains. Memorial Benches: benches that either simply memorialize a loved one scattered or buried in a cremation garden, or actually contain the remains within. Headstones We offer many options for memorialization. In order to preserve the natural beauty of the landscape, Bulloch Memorial Gardens offers sections that feature headstones which lie flat against the ground, called markers. Other sections of the cemetery feature upright markers or headstones, which provide more choices for memorialization.

Graveside Service As its name implies, a graveside service may be held at the grave site just prior to burial of a casket or urn, and usually consists of final remarks, prayers or memories., A graveside service may occur before, after, or in place of a traditional service. www.joineranderson.com

If Social Security checks were being directly deposited into a bank account, the bank must be notified of the death as well. For More Information: For more information write or visit any Social Security office or phone the toll-free number, 1-800772-1213. You can speak to a representative weekdays 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. You can also visit the website at www.socialsecuritty.gov. Life Insurance We accept most life insurance companies as a method of payment for funeral expenses. In cases where a family chooses to use life insurance proceeds it is necessary to bring a verifiable policy or policies to the arrangement conference. They must be assignable policies. Due to privacy laws, it is required that the beneficiary of the policy be present at the arrangement conference so that they may speak to the customer service representative for the insurance company. We are not able to accept insurance policies in which the beneficiary is deceased and there is no contingent beneficiary listed.

The Will and Probate What is a Will? A Will is a legal document that allows you to give direction to your family concerning how you want your estate handled after your death. It is a legal document administered by an attorney and can be extremely helpful in avoiding misunderstandings between family members and loved ones when it comes to distribution of your estate. Advantages of having a Will With a will, you name an executor of your estate. The executor is your “personal representative,” and may be a family member or a trusted friend. They will be in charge of the administration of your estate. • A will allows you to name a guardian for your minor children • A will allows you to gift specific items to your family and loved ones • A will allows you to name your beneficiaries • A will should save on estate taxes and probate costs (check with your attorney or accountant) What Happens if There is No Will? If someone dies without a legally executed Will, the courts will appoint an executor and will decide how your estate will be divided among your heirs. The court will not know your wishes, and your assets may be distributed differently than you may have desired. How Do I Make a Will? When deciding on a Will, it is best to seek legal advice from an attorney. An attorney will guide you through the process and provide answers to any questions, along with suggestions, should you need them. What to Take to Your Attorney: • The name of your executor • The name of a guardian for your minor children • A complete list and description of your assets • The names and addresses of your beneficiaries • A list of specific gifts (monetary and non-monetary), and the names of recipients • A photo ID Once you execute a Will, you will need to update it as your life situations change (marriage, births of children, divorce, etc.) Probate Probate is the legal process that takes place after a person dies to pass ownership of his/her assets to heirs. It also ensures that the decedent’s debts are paid in an orderly fashion. Probate Assets are those that are in the decedent’s name at the time of death, or that lacked a provision for automatic succession of ownership at death. These may include: bank accounts, investment accounts, real estate and life insurance policies without a named beneficiary. Intestate (without a Will) the decedent’s probate assets will be distributed to the decedent’s heirs. The hierarchy of heirs for any distribution is determined by state or local jurisdictional rules. The probate process begins with filing papers (death certificate and Will) with the Bulloch County Clerk of Probate Court. There is a filing fee to be paid. The court will issue a file number that is used to identify the case through the proceedings. A probate judge reviews the validity of any Will and issues Letters of Administration to the Executor. The Letters give the Executor the right to conduct business on behalf of the decedent. A “Notice to Creditors” and “Notice of Administration” about the estate is published in the County’s legal oracle/newspaper. Power of Attorney When drafting a will, be sure to designate a power of attorney for healthcare, property and finance. Please remember that the power of attorney ceases at death, with the exception of the power of attorney for healthcare when it concerns the disposition if the body. www.joineranderson.com

Interments: • Interments are in-ground burials with the deceased’s remains in a casket. Caskets are then placed in an in-ground vault. • Vaults must be concrete or metal. A concrete vault is a lined burial container. A metal vault can be made out of galvanized or non-galvanized steel, powder coated aluminum, stainless steel, copper or bronze. Mausoleum Crypts: Mausoleum crypts replace the need for a cemetery space, outer burial container and monument or memorial because the crypt is the cemetery space and outer burial container and the lettering on the crypt replaces the need for a monument or memorial. At Bulloch Memorial Gardens, we offer a choice of inside (Chapel) or outside (Garden) crypts. Inurnments: Both Columbarium niches and ground inurnments are available. The cost of the niche includes the inscriptions.

Bulloch Memorial Gardens Bulloch Memorial Gardens is a licensed, state regulated perpetual care cemetery owned by Joiner Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory. Perpetual care is a one-time fee paid when purchasing a ground space, mausoleum or niche for a final resting place. For you, perpetual care means that funds are held in a perpetual trust which are to be used to maintain and provide the necessary care of the cemetery forever. Whether you are purchasing cemetery lots, monuments or flat memorials, these items are usually purchased through the cemetery of your choice and are not included on the funeral pre-arrangement contract. At Joiner Anderson, we offer cemetery items and funeral home items on the same contract.

Memorials: Bulloch Memorial Gardens offers a variety of ways in which to memorialize your loved one. Markers, headstones, statues, benches and plaques may be ordered to honor the deceased. Purchasing memorials during pre-planning means the monument may be purchased at today’s prices and be placed in storage until needed. Bulloch Memorial Gardens also offers refurbishment of existing memorials. Services: Bulloch Memorial Gardens offers funeral services and memorial services in the chapel mausoleum and at graveside. Pre-planning of the entire funeral and burial may be done on site at the cemetery in the BMG office. Our after care services never end. Flowers: As part of our perpetual care, we offer an annual flower program which ensures your loved one is acknowledged with flowers at various times throughout the year. We offer stay-in-the-vase flowers for bronze memorials and potted silk flowers for granite and marble vases.

General Information: • We offer 24-month payment plans at no interest, with a 20% down-payment • We offer granite or marble monuments for Bulloch Memorial Gardens and for other cemeteries • You can purchase vaults at today’s price in Bulloch Memorial Gardens that can be used in other cemeteries • We have the capability to design bronze memorials and stone monuments to create a most heartfelt tribute to your loved one, you can also incorporate bronze and stone in the same memorial • A one-time fee is assessed at the time of burial, to open and close the grave, crypt or niche. Entombment: • A gasketed casket is necessary for placement in the mausoleum, but no vault is required • A wooden casket may be chosen, but would be placed in a casket sealing wrap prior to entombment • We have Tandem Crypts available in the chapel mausoleum which means two people may rest in the crypt lying head to head. • When a crypt is purchased for two, you are also purchasing the inscription the sir name and the given names and birthdates. It is not necessary to purchase a bronze memorial or stone monument www.joineranderson.com

Georgia Southern becomes a bigger player WRITTEN BY DOY CAVE

A

ccording to a 2017 report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the state of Georgia will have one of the highest shortages of nurses over the next decade. Georgia Southern University is now the largest producer of undergraduate health profession degrees in the state, and Barry Joyner, Ph.D., dean of the Waters College of Health Professions, says the University is poised to make ground-shaking strides in training health professionals for the region. “We graduate about 300 undergraduate nursing students a year, and I talked to the CEOs in Savannah and talked to the CEO at East Georgia Regional Medical Center and they still have vacancies in their nursing programs,” he said. “So I’m hoping that as we start to ramp up our program that we’ll just have more and more Georgia Southern students — more and more employees for the local health care facilities.” In order to meet this rising demand, the Waters College of Health Professions at Georgia Southern University has expanded its facilities and will look to expand its programs and professional partnerships in the critical years to come. The University recently opened the new Health Professions Academic Building on the Armstrong Campus in Savannah. The new 63,000 square-foot facility features state-of-the-art simulation suites and laboratories that will significantly raise the level of hands-on training for students. On the Statesboro Campus, the Nursing/Chemistry building received a $1 million upgrade to its simulation labs as well, and Hanner Fieldhouse is presently undergoing a $5 million renovation that will upgrade laboratory and research spaces for several programs. “It’s a great marketing tool for us,” said Joyner, commenting on the new and renovated facilities. “It means that when students are going out 80 • Statesboro Magazine

into the workforce they are even better prepared than they were. The simulations they’re able to do now, the laboratories we have, the equipment that we have — everything is just a significant upgrade compared to what we had.” Joyner says he is looking for more health care partnerships in the region. The University currently works with Memorial Health University Medical Center and St. Joseph’s/Candler in Savannah and with East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro. Joyner says the College is currently cultivating a relationship with Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin, and hopes to find more health care facilities to provide students with the practical experience they’ll need to serve area hospitals and other health care facilities. The College is also working closely with Fort Stewart in Hinesville, Georgia. The Army base is the largest of its kind east of the Mississippi, and physical therapy students have been working with soldiers on proper technique and exercises that will help them avoid injuries during physical training. The program has shown an estimated 20 percent drop in duty-limiting injuries for soldiers, and Joyner says the training may be expanded to other bases. Joyner says he is excited about all the opportunities on the horizon for the College, but he is even more excited for the opportunities it will bring for students. At their recent open houses, he says students from as far away as Wisconsin have come to inquire about the programs at Georgia Southern. “Keep a look out for us because I think there are some exciting things that are going to happen, and I don’t think we will be a silent college,” he said. “I think we’re going to be out there. We will be shaking the ground a little bit.”

Sweet Heart Biscuits 4 cups Plain Flour 2 tsp. Baking Powder 1 tsp. Baking Soda 1 ½ tsp. Salt 2 tsp. Sugar 1 stick Butter 2 Eggs 1 cup Sour Cream 1 cup Buttermilk Place all dry ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Grate very cold butter into the flour mixture and mix until butter pieces are coated. I use a food processor with a grater attachment for this task. Place eggs, sour cream, and buttermilk in bowl and mix well. Make a well in center of dry ingredients add wet ingredients. Mix until just combined. The dough will be sticky. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead 2-3 times. Pat the dough out by hand into a rectangle approximately 1½ inches thick. Cut with biscuit cutter or cut with knife and shape into round balls of dough. Place biscuits close together on generously greased pan. Dot the top of each biscuit with butter. Bake at 375° for 10-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve immediately. Sweet Heart Biscuits 2 cups Self-Rising Flour 2 sticks Butter 1 cup Sour Cream Place all ingredients in bowl. Mix until just combined. Spoon onto greased baking sheet. Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm. Helpful Biscuit Baking Hints: • Butter or shortening must be ice cold • Do not over mix ingredients • Make a well in center of dry ingredients and add the wet ingredients for better mixing • Use your hands. Biscuit making is all about the feel of the dough. • Use a sharp knife or biscuit cutter • Serve piping HOT • Don’t be afraid to try and fail many times until you find your perfect recipe

A Real Southern Cook Makes Good Biscuits WRITTEN BY LAZAR BROWN OGLESBY

I

’m a firm believer every Southern lady should have a good biscuit recipe in her repertoire. The “perfect” biscuit recipe has eluded me for over 15 years. After trying countless recipes: cutting lard, sifting flour, and kneading dough with some of the best biscuit bakers in my circle I have come to realize that most folks who cook an excellent biscuit don’t have a 3 x 5 recipe card with precisely measured ingredients. A good biscuit is all about the feel of the dough and the loving hands that magically create a flaky morsel of buttery goodness out of ingredients that most people have in their pantry. Biscuits can be a staple of every meal and deserve a place at any wellappointed table. Breakfast begs for a buttery biscuit slathered with homemade jam or local honey. A farm lunch calls for a hearty biscuit to fuel a family for an afternoon of hard work. I remember my daddy and granddaddy sopping “Cat Head” biscuits in cane syrup at farm lunches at the Brown’s Kitchen House. The biscuits were so large they required their own bowl filled with amber syrup made from a neighbor’s sugar cane. One of my earliest tasks in my Mother’s kitchen was making mayonnaise biscuits. These light and airy gems consist of three simple ingredients: flour, mayonnaise, and milk. I was in awe of how these every day kitchen staples could turn into a savory morsel baked up in miniature muffin tins. My friend Rusty Lane towers over the auction block. He cajoles bids from the most conservative of patrons, but in my opinion his most impressive skill is his ability to whip up a batch of perfectly crafted biscuits. Rusty rolls the biscuits in his hand and makes a small indentation in the center where melted butter pools in the hollow created by his giant hands. His famous biscuits are a dinner staple at what he lovingly calls, The Shack. He even includes the biscuits in his family’s Christmas dinner tradition. The biscuits are served with a chocolate sauce that rivals any jelly or syrup. My earliest forays in the kitchen began when I moved away to college. I had a tiny kitchen, cheap pots that scorched everything, and a willing circle of friends who bravely agreed to dinner invites. Most meals included what we lovingly referred to as “fat bread” widely known as sour cream muffins or butter-me-nots. The recipe consisted of three simple ingredients: flour, butter, and sour cream. Baked in mini muffin tins, these little buttery morsels will melt in your mouth! I lean towards the older ways in most of my habits. I think every fine meal should include a basket filled with warm freshly baked bread, but with today’s low carb diets and crazy fads, a quick salad is what’s for dinner most nights. Take the time to slow down and bake a batch of biscuits. I promise the end result, garnered by a job well done, will be complete satisfaction. I call this recipe Sweet Heart Biscuits because they are, in fact, a labor of love and the sure-fire way to anyone’s heart May/June 2019 • 83

the spiritual pathway

If Tomorrow Never Comes WRITTEN BY REV. DR. H. WILLIAM PERRY

T

he other afternoon Margaret and I were watching a wonderful old movie, The Music Man. I first saw it back in 1962, the year it came out. I had taken the train from Live Oak to Jacksonville, and had a two or three hour layover before going on up to Lumberton, N.C., to see Margaret, the love of my life. There I sat in the theater, my suitcase at my feet, watching that outstanding musical. Suddenly, the star of the show, Robert Preston, made a statement that I still think about 57 years later: You pile up enough tomorrows and all you have is a bunch of yesterdays. In the dark of the theater I pulled out a pen and wrote that phrase down on a card I had in my pocket. I pondered over it on the trip up to North Carolina. I still do. It became an important part of my life. If you keep piling up tomorrows in your life, saying, “I’ll do that tomorrow,” the day will come when you look back and see a bunch of empty yesterdays. God really used that phrase to guide me. I have tried to do each day the things I felt led to do without putting them off. I think one of the Devil’s strategies is to get us to put off doing what God wants us to do. I remember an old story about the Devil gathering around him a small group of junior devils to prepare them for going to Earth and trying to get us humans to disobey God. He asked those junior devils what their strategy would be when they got to earth. The first said, “I’ll tell people there is no God!” The Devil said, “That won’t work! Down deep inside most humans believe there is a God.” The second junior devil said, “I’ll tell them there is no hell!” The Devil said, “That won’t work either. Most people believe there is punishment for doing wrong.” 84 • Statesboro Magazine

The third junior devil said, “I’ll tell them there is no hurry!” The Devil broke out in his old fiendish grin and said, “That’s it! Use that strategy and you’ll be successful!” Procrastination is one of our downfalls. Failing to do today what should be done. Putting it off ‘til tomorrow; then never getting around to it. An explorer was in the valley looking up at the cliff that seemed to go on forever. He took out his binoculars to look more closely. About halfway up the cliff he saw the opening of a cave. He wanted to explore it and figured the only way he could was to go to the top of the cliff and lower himself by rope. He walked around in the valley until he found a way to climb around and up to the top of the cliff. He tied a rope to a tree and began to lower himself down toward the cave. When he finally got down to the level of the cave he had to swing back and forth so that he could land on the cave’s flooring. With great relief he finally swung into the cave. He took the rope from around him, placed the end on a rock, and turned on his flash light. Then he heard a swish, looked back toward the entrance, and saw the rope swinging out away from the cave. The thought came to him, “If I’m going to catch that rope I’d better be ready to get it when it makes its first swing back in my direction.” So there he stood at the entrance; when the rope swung back toward the cave he jumped out toward it, caught it, and was able to swing back over the valley and then back into the cave. With great relief he realized he was safe only because he acted without delay. I hope you’ve learned the lesson. Act when you have opportunity. Don’t delay. Don’t pile up a bunch of empty yesterdays.

I Was A Home WRITTEN BY RIC MANDES

B

ut no longer... I began living thirty-five years ago. I was not constructed. I was created by a crew of craftsmen who without a doubt could have been apprentices for Michelangelo. I took shape midst a forest God made. My evenings brought forth the full moon’s milky beams, traveling across the seas of heaven illuminating the graceful greenery of sentinel pines as if it were Christmas. The gentle slope of my front yard adds to the eloquence to my setting. A southern style breeze engages the tree tops into a sway like waltz. Lightning bugs often would add to the charm of it all. While night 86 • Statesboro Magazine

lyrics of crickets, toads and the bass soloist of an owl provided an overwhelming symphony. I have stood as a welcomed beacon to passersby, drawn to my Manor lines where within, living was grand. And I was so very much alive. Oh, how I offered chambers for every chapter of living and loving. There was that perfect corner in the den for the Christmas tree. Advent magic and birthday celebrations filled me with an overwhelming warmth released from that special setting, cascading down hallways into everywhere, including my laundry room. I loved a party. And so did my family. Speaking of which, how life took a grand formation when two baby boys came home four years apart. Oh, yes, how living took a turn magically as the sons grew, and on those beginning Christmas mornings, just as dawn was slipping in, Mom and Daddy would waken to the whispers of the boys, “can we go see what Santa left us?” As their home place, I was blessed to see such love taught to the boys. For one day they would go forth and pass this spiritual patent to their own children. As the sons grew, I offered a hallway with broad walls, the perfect setting for portraits of babies at Easter time. It was the “Louvre of Love.” And I enjoyed that epilogue banter after supper - whose time it was to clear the table, rinse off the dinner ware and load the dishwasher - “the right way,” came mother’s soft reminder. One of the more interesting times for food services was when the girls began showing up following those Friday night home games. Dad would have grilled hot dogs. Mom would have warmed the buns and would have trays of condiments to offer. On the cusp of teenage ethos, a great deal of laughter began filling the patio. Curfew was noted and no later than eleven-fifteen these ebullient young ones left, heading home, after thanking the boys’ mom and dad. How brief these Camelot happenings. In a whisper of time, the sons blossomed into young men; terms of endearment expressed on their cell phones floating into the den where Mom and Dad sat arranged in favorite push backs. Reading or watching television. And no doubt taking notice as to those trite forever phrases, “Hey, I saw you talking to Patty tonight. She’s cute!” And I, the home, took it all in. The exchange of going out with just “a good friend, Daddy,” to the later query, “Mom, I need to ask you something.” And in the wisp of an angel wing, three years later, the glorious trumpeting signal of the wedding march filled the Chapel. Marriage had gathered Zach, the older, and Dawn, whom he met their freshman year of college. Chess was a junior in high school. And I took note of his laughter as he engaged each day with no holding back. That was then. But now is now. And soon I will no longer be a home. But a HOUSE FOR SALE. It was a winter evening when Dad said, “Mildred, I love our home, but I think we should down-size. We can take the memories with us.” The following spring, I became painfully empty. Now at the age of thirty-five, I remain in repose. My hallways are parched with emptiness. The sanctioned hours of “sleeping in” on weekends, gone. The steamy coffee cups with soft comments on the patio, gone. The chatter of the boys shooting basketball in the driveway, gone. The moon still addresses the tall pines and the muscled oaks; the lofts for the spring time chorale of tweetie birds, and that far off bass note of the owl. At 35, I am young. Living is far from over for me as a HOME. I have faith, a family, a young group, with life well underway, will move in and return those sounds of growing in an act of love that I am so damn good at blessing... as a home.
