SCOTT FOXX EXHIBITION OPENING RECEPTION 5:30 P.M. MAIN GALLERY • AVERITT CENTER FOR THE ARTS
“I am intrigued by the parallels between random associations of advertising imagery and language, capturing these impactful combinations of visual and textual phenomenon in painterly language,” said Foxx. “These works combine various pieces of signage, folk art and murals, from the walls and awnings of businesses, magazines and photographs from history that I have collected over the years, that highlight sometimes uncomfortable realities of Southern history and culture. I hope that the subtle relationships presented in these paintings, between the imagery and text, will make the viewer consider the Southern identity as both modern and yet inextricable from history. I am not trying to ‘preach’ a gospel of some sort, I am only noticing and presenting some contradictions that we live with and have accepted as common; sometimes they make me laugh, and sometimes they are depressing, but nevertheless they make up the visual landscape I was raised in and for good or bad such images and ideas have formed my identity.”

SkynFolks was formed as a result of some very devoted musicians who wanted to bring a little more to the game than what they’d seen from Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute bands. They knew how discriminating real Skynyrd fans can be so they set their performance bar high...... really high. Brought together by luck, fate, devotion and drive, the original “Core4”, consisting of the three guitarists and bassist, worked to craft with the utmost discrimination exact replications of the music of Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Ed King, and Leon Wilkerson. Every part is played exactly like the original recordings. Totally authentic and completely accurate. www.averittcenterforthearts.org for tickets.

Praise dance (liturgical dance), has always been an important component of the dance experience for Rebekah Harville Carlisle, the director of the Cotton Rose School of Dance at the Averitt Center for the Arts. On the wall of her 5 North Main Studio are two excerpts from the Holy Bible. One states, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news,” (Romans 10:15). The other is more direct, “Let them praise His name with dance,” (Psalms 149:3). That’s the concept behind Grace…A Performance of Praise. From the youngest ballerinas to the most accomplished young adults, these dancers will use simple elegance and refinement of movement to worship through bodily movement. www.averittcenterforthearts.org for tickets.

GEECHEE GULLAH RING SHOUTERS 30TH ANNUAL JACK N. & ADDIE D. AVERITT LECTURE SERIES 2:00 P.M. FREE FAMILY EVENT SPONSORED BY THE BULLOCH COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY EMMA KELLY THEATER AVERITT CENTER FOR THE ARTS
The Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters is a 10-member Gullah-Geechee group that began performing professionally in 1980. They have educated and entertained audiences around the United States with the “ring shout,” a compelling fusion of counterclockwise dance-like movement, call-and-response singing, and percussion consisting of hand claps and a stick beating the rhythm on a wooden floor. African in its origins, the ring shout affirms oneness with the Spirit and ancestors as well as community cohesiveness. The ring shout was first described in detail during the Civil War by outside observers in coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia. Its practice continued well into the 20th Century, even as its influence was resounding in later forms like spiritual, jubilee, gospel and jazz. By the late 20th century, the ring shout itself was presumed to have died out until its rediscovery in McIntosh County in 1980; thus, the beginning of the McIntosh County Shouters. The group was awarded the NEA National Heritage Fellowship in 1993, and were selected as Producers of Distinction and Founding Members of the “Georgia Made Georgia Grown Program,” in 2009. Their performances include the National Black Arts Festival, of Smithsonian Folklife Festival, World Music Institute, and Sound Legacies at Emory University. The group has been featured in magazines and documentaries, including HBO’s Unchained Memories. www.averittcenterforthearts.org

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace! www.averittcenterforthearts.org for tickets.

JEFF GARLAND EXHIBITION OPENING 5:30 P.M. FREE FUN FAMILY EVENT! MAIN GALLERY • AVERITT CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Currently, Jeff layers colors into a flat rectangular picture plane to create a volumetric space. These painting’s vibrant colors and transparent layers are created with hand crafted acrylic paints. He first begins every large scale painting with a scaled down maquette. His design comes from the set of guidelines that he follows when manipulating the flat plane. Jeff cuts and folds any part of the plane but it cannot extend beyond the picture plane and nothing can be removed. This allows him to make decisions that he would not have made without these guidelines. It also has proven to challenge the picture planes tensions with space. After each cut and fold, he transfers the information to the larger painting. At this point he decides the color he wants for that new shape. www.averittcenterforthearts.org.

Statesboro High Percussionist Spencer Boyum Selected for All-State Band
Four musicians also selected for Georgia’s District 1 Honor Bands
A percussionist from Statesboro High School was selected by the Georgia Music Educators Association to be a member of the percussion ensemble in the 2022 All-State Band. Spencer Boyum, a junior, auditioned for All-State Band in McDonough the second weekend of January, and he will participate in this year’s All-State band concert this March. “Spencer put in a lot of practice, time, and effort to prepare for the audition,” said Lee Collins, Director of Bands at Statesboro High. “Being selected is a prestigious honor. We are proud of him and excited for him to represent the Blue Devil nation during the event in Athens.” Boyum will also represent the school system as the first chair in the percussion ensemble for the District 1 Honor Band for junior and senior musicians across the southeast portion of the state. Scott Caplinger, a senior, who plays clarinet, will also represent SHS in the District 1 Honor Band. Statesboro High also has three students who will play with the District 1 Honor Band for freshmen and sophomores: Kylan Ifeji, tenth grade, a tubist; Emory D’Arcangelo, ninth grade, a clarinetist; and Mason Thompson, ninth grade, trumpet player. Statesboro High’s assistant director of bands, Sergio Arreguin, said he is proud of all the students that put in the work to participate in district auditions, as well as the students who were ultimately selected. “Auditioning for these honor bands can be a nerve-wracking experience for students,” Arreguin said. “No matter the outcome, it’s a great learning opportunity and a chance to showcase their talents. Congratulations to all our students.” Boyum and the other All-State Band members will spend two days in early March preparing for the concert. They will receive the music at the beginning of the event and, after holding rehearsals and working with facilitators, the band will perform on March 5, at 7:00 p.m., in the Classic Center on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens.

Flack is one of 10 national winners selected across all hospitals affiliated with Community Health Systems, one of the leading operators of general acute-care hospitals and outpatient care centers in communities across the United States. The organization’s affiliates include East Georgia Regional Medical Center and 82 other hospitals in 16 states. Flack was surprised with the recognition during a scheduled meeting with hospital coworkers and leadership where she was presented with two crystal plaques, a bouquet of red roses, and many other tokens of appreciation packed inside a gift box. “Jane understands how compassionate care contributes to the well-being of patients, and has made a lasting impression on those she’s cared for over the last 39 years,” said Stephen Pennington, CEO of East Georgia. “She leads by example and is highly respected by all who have the opportunity to learn from her clinical excellence and kind demeanor.” Flack joined East Georgia Regional Medical Center in 1982. She is consistently mentioned as one of the most knowledgeable nurses at EGRMC in her peer-to-peer evaluations. The peer-nominated award program was open to qualifying RNs and LPNs working in a direct patient care position who consistently demonstrate characteristics synonymous with nursing excellence, according to the release. “Jane puts her heart and soul into everything she does,” said Marie Burdett, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at EGRMC. “Her actions to provide superior service, work as a team player, mentor the team, and promote health in our community are just a few of the reasons she received numerous nominations for this award.” In addition to receiving the Nursing Excellence Award itself, Jane received a cash award and a copy of “Shining the Light on All the Right” by Mark and Bonnie Barnes, co-founders of The DAISY Foundation, an international movement created to recognize and express gratitude for extraordinary nursing. www.eastgeorgiaregional.com March/April 2022

Local public & private high schools honor STAR nominees
Statesboro High School’s valedictorian, Evy Shen, is Bulloch County’s district STAR Student. She along with her STAR teacher, Jennifer (Jenn) Calhoun, were named on Wednesday, Feb. 9, during a special recognition luncheon at Forest Heights Country Club that was hosted by five local public and private high schools and sponsored by the Bulloch County Foundation for Public Education and the Rotary Club of Statesboro. Shen is the daughter of Dr. Junan Shen and Min Zhu. She plans to attend Stanford University in the fall and pursue an interdisciplinary pathway in Stanford’s Science, Technology, and Society program which consists of a wide range of academic fields centered on society including public policy, medicine, communication, technology, and more. Shen and Calhoun will both now advance to the Region 8 STAR Recognition, which will be held at Georgia Southern University on March 16, and will include district winning STARS from 16 area counties. The Statesboro Exchange Club is the region sponsor. The winning Region 8 STAR pair will advance to the State STAR Banquet in Atlanta on April 25. The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, now in its 64th year, is a state program sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) and the PAGE Foundation. Locally, six school-level STAR student and teacher pairs from Bulloch Academy, Trinity Christian School, Portal Middle High School, Southeast Bulloch High School, and Statesboro High School were recognized during this year’s event and enjoyed support from their families, school counselors, and principals who were in attendance. These are this year’s other school-level STAR student and STAR teacher nominees from whom Shen and Calhoun were selected: (1) Bulloch Academy (Tie): Tressa Rountree and Pam Sapp and Wesley Joyce and Beth Burke; (2) Portal Middle High School: Jenna Goodson and Clinton Thornburg (3) Southeast Bulloch High School: Katlyn Brantley and Dr. Kimberly Brantley; (4) Trinity Christian School: Mary Genevieve (Mary Gen) Williams and Donna McKenna. S
Ten of Southeast Bulloch High School’s Advanced Chorus members performed with the Georgia Music Educators Association’s (GMEA) prestigious All-State Chorus in Athens, February 17-19. One vocalist was also selected for the elite 100-member All-State Reading Chorus. To have a rural high school in Brooklet, Georgia, continue to produce such top vocal talent is due in large part to Brent Whitaker, the school’s Chorus teacher and director of its Fine Arts Department, and the excellent music program he began building at the school in 2001. Whitaker trains and exposes his students to a wide range of musical theory disciplines and competitions. The school has five performance ensembles: Concert Choir, Women’s Choir, Advanced Chorus, Girls Trio, and Boys Quartet. The All-State Reading Chorus is an elite chorus reserved for only 100 of the state’s most advanced vocalists and music theorists. Students who audition are required to sight-read five, eight-measure examples with only 45 seconds to prepare each. All-State Chorus participants will have the opportunity to learn and be led by a prestigious group of guest conductors from some of the nation’s renowned music programs including Georgia Southern University’s own Dr. Shannon Jeffreys, an Associate Professor and Director of Choral Activities, who will conduct this year’s All-State Reading Chorus. All-State culminated with a series of public performances in the Athens Classic Center’s Theater: 5:00 p.m., 9th - 10th Grade Mixed Concert; 5:45 p.m., Women’s Concert; 6:30 p.m., Men’s Concert; and 7:20 p.m., 11th – 12th Grade Mixed Concert. These are Southeast Bulloch’s All-State vocalists for 2022: Reading Chorus: James Waters; All-State Chorus: Joshua Davis, Nicholas Gapac, William Gapac, Katherine Hamel, Aiden Heidler, Jacob Luft, Kara Mattos, Rilesy Mattos, James Waters, and Ryan Whitaker. n our community we have a visionary, a civil rights leader, a voting rights advocate, a defender of the wrongly accused, an educator and a pastor. He once told us, “The law and the church are two important institutions for a good and orderly society, one to press us to our highest hopes and dreams, and the other to keep us from descending into the basest of beings.” He has one foot in both realms, and in both he seeks salvation and justice for all. As a young lad in church he was a member of the Youth Council of the NAACP. He graduated from Screven County High School, and attended Georgia Southern University where in 2001 he was president of the Student Government Association. Accepted to the University of Georgia’s School of Law, Johnson earned a Juris Doctor degree and met his wife, Dr. Meca Renee Williams-Johnson. After law school Johnson began work as legal counsel with the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association in the New York area assisting in the overcoming of racial, ethnic, and gender health disparities in the policies and the operations of the organizations. Johnson eventually returned to Statesboro and opened a private practice, The Johnson Firm, PC, Attorneys and Counselors of Law. Dr. Williams-Johnson began work as an educational psychologist and is now a tenured professor at Georgia Southern. In 2020, together with attorneys Mawuli Davis and Robert Bozeman of Decatur’s Davis Bozeman Law Firm, Johnson was founding partner in Davis Bozeman Johnson

Law. This year they were joined by Attorney Roodgine Bray, the first female partner for the firm. Together the lawyers have formed a practice that is becoming widely known for its dedication to justice for clients, advocating and even facing contempt of court charges, rather than perverting the cause of justice. Johnson practices both criminal and civil law in the state and federal courts, sometimes representing African Americans facing a system of justice that is predicated on years of racial profiling and social injustices. Something Johnson is dedicated to changing, living by the Bible’s command in Micah 6:8, To love mercy, do justice and walk humbly. Outside of the courtroom, Johnson is a committed servant leader having served as an ordained minister for more than 20 years. He is currently Senior Minister at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Pembroke and the Magnolia Baptist Church in Statesboro. A graduate of Georgia Southern University and the University of Georgia School of Law, Johnson also previously served on the Political Science and Criminal Justice faculties at Georgia Southern University and Savannah State University teaching courses on Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Race and the Law, and the Civil Rights Movement. Today he is a recognized thought-leader on voting rights having testified before the U.S. Congress. He is in demand as a speaker and lecturer across the country, and writes on subjects such as race, measuring equity and understanding 20 statesboromagazine.com

the power of public policy. Previously, Johnson was President of the Georgia NAACP, following more than two decades of service to the organization on the local and regional level. The regional work included management of the public policy agenda and administrative activities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. In 2018, Johnson was the Democratic nominee for Georgia’s 12th Congressional District. He is often asked if and when he will run for public office again. It is a possibility that he weighs. In the past few years, Johnson succeeded Stacey Abrams and Raphael Warnock as head of the New Georgia Project, a transformational civic engagement organization responsible for defeating voter suppression and advancing progressive values in public policy. In September of 2021, Johnson organized and participated in the 63-mile Georgia Justice March. Highlighting the common struggle to get grand jury indictments, the march started Thursday, September 16, in Sylvania and concluded on Monday, September 20, on Bull Street in Savannah. The march was in honor of Julian Lewis, an unarmed black motorist who died after ex-Georgia State Trooper Jacob Gordon Johnson shot him in the head on August 7, 2020. The grand jury assembled in Sylvania failed to indict the officer. Lewis’ son is the man who hired Davis and Johnson to represent the family in seeking justice. About the march Johnson said, “This is an historic march in it is one of the longest marches to be undertaken in the cause of justice. By comparison, the Selma march which began, and was conceived after the Alabama state trooper killing of Jimmy Lee Jackson, was 53 miles over five days, this will be 63 miles over the same five days.” Last year in March, Georgia’s two U.S. senators appointed a commission to advise them on nominations to federal court judgeships and U.S. Attorney and U.S. Marshal vacancies. Johnson was among 16 people named to the commission. So was partner Mawuli Davis and associate and former Statesboro NAACP V.P. James Woodall, others include: Jason Carter (son of Jimmy), Cathy Cox, (President of Georgia College), and Andrea Young (Director of the Georgia ACLU). In 2020 the State Bar of Georgia elected Johnson to a threw-year term on the Judicial Qualifications Commission Nominating Committee. The commission reviews applications and recommends candidates to fill judicial vacancies within the state, superior and appellate courts in Georgia. So with these recent appointments, Johnson now serves on committees with roles in judicial selections at both the federal and state levels. Johnson practices law in Statesboro, even though he has influence on state and national affairs and could work in any large city. He does so by choice. He thinks there is value for our community in having a general practitioner, a lawyer that works on Main Street, working for and on behalf of citizens who is seeking justice for all. That makes him our readers’ choice for 2022’s Most Fabulous Man in Statesboro. S

here’s no wonder Statesboro Magazine readers voted Ogeechee Technical College President Lori Durden the Most Fabulous Woman in Statesboro. She’s one of the most accomplished and engaged members of the community! She was celebrated in 2016 as half of the Most Fabulous Couple along with husband, local developer and builder Tim Durden; both were featured on the cover. She has long been known as a community leader and a catalyst in the economic development of the region. Durden’s background in leadership roles as both the Georgia Southern Small Business Development Center’ director and Ogeechee Technical College’s V.P. of Economic Development have given her a distinctive perspective on business, education, and workforce development. She was recognized for her vantage point on both aspects of education when she was appointed in 2013, by then Governor Nathan Deal to serve on the Board of Regents, a governing board that oversees the operations of the University System of Georgia. She served half of her seven year term before resigning to assume the role of president of Ogeechee Tech in 2016. Local attorney Laura Marsh served out the remainder of her term. Since then, Durden has been part of many ma28 statesboromagazine.com

jor projects at the College that are benefitting local industries and national companies. In September of 2021 it was announced that Bulloch County and OTC would partner to build a new Georgia Industrial Systems & Industrial Robotics Training Facility at the Gateway Industrial Park at U.S. Highway 301 and I-16. The new building will not only host industrial skills training but also will become home to the Bulloch County Development Authority. For the 36,000 sq. ft. facility OTC will provide the furniture, fixtures and equipment and be responsible for operations and training of robotics technology. Who agrees to add to her job responsibilities by agreeing to partner with the county to build an off campus training facility to be used by companies from all over the U.S.? The Most Fabulous Woman does. In the fall of 2021, she also helped launch a new Manufacturing Engineering Technology program at the College that offers a degree, a diploma and two certificate options for students. The new program will prepare students to use basic engineering principles and technical skills in developing and testing automated, servo-mechanical, and other electromechanical systems. The degree will include instruction in prototype testing, manufacturing, and operational testing, systems analysis and maintenance procedures, thereby benefitting local and regional industry. She forged a partnership with Georgia Southern University to provide an automatic admission pathway for local students called the Accelerated Transfer Program that allows students who have been denied entry to GSU to start college at OTC with the intent to transfer to GSU at a later date. Last May, under President Durden, OTC was selected as one of only five colleges in the country as a training provider for Amazon’s Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship (MRA) Program. The Amazon deal brings employees and apprentices to Statesboro from across the country, whose tuition and housing are paid by the company. The students are housed at local hotels for the 12-week course, benefiting agencies of the City of Statesboro that receive funding from the local lodging tax, such as the Statesboro Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Averitt Center for the Arts. In addition to her many successes as president of OTC, Durden has served on the state level as Program Chair of Leadership Georgia, of which she is a 2009 graduate. She was chosen in 2009 as one of Georgia Trend Magazine’s “40 Under 40.” A group of up and coming young leaders from across the state. And, also received the same honor from the Savannah Business Report & Journal. Currently, she serves on the Georgia Innovates Taskforce, created by Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan to explore new technologies that can spur regional economic development, the task force is comprised of four subcommittees: public innovation; education and training; entrepreneurship and start-ups; and rural initiatives. All areas in which Durden is very knowledgeable and highly experienced. Regionally she has served on the Coastal Workforce Development Board and the Herty Advanced Materials Center Board of Trustees. In Bulloch County she has served on the Foundation for Public Education Board of Trustees; Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; East Georgia Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees; and is immediate past president of the Rotary Club of Statesboro, only the second woman to serve as president. With all her successes, Durden asserts that the best five days of her life were spent with her family in Montana last year at the marriage of her oldest daughter, Chloe. She has two more children of whom she is very proud, Caylee and T.J. For her contributions to Bulloch County, the region and the state of Georgia, and for her love of her family and community, our readers rightly chose Lori Durden as the Most Fabulous Woman in Statesboro for 2022. he latest barbeque war in Statesboro has been won hands down by Dolan’s on South Main! You can smell the spicy, sweet, smoky meat cooking in the pit everyday on the Blue Mile. You can sample it all on the Large Sampler, a combination of chopped que, ribs and chicken, served with two homemade sides such as cowboy beans or Brunswick stew. There’s plenty of beverages to choose from, too. A fully stocked bar featuring signature cocktails is located right inside with additional seating offered outside on the large open-air front deck. Owners Mary Beth Brown and Lazar Brown Oglesby, sisters from Garfield, Georgia, have been stars of the food world since graduating college with respective degrees in Hotel & Restaurant Management and the Culinary Arts. Both ladies have barbeque in their genes from Grandpa Dolan, who also gave them a love for food, friends and fellowship with his cook-outs at the farm. “He would use any reason to have a gathering at the farm,” said Lazar. “Dove shoots, fish fries, barbeques, it didn’t matter, any excuse to cook and have people over. We had a ‘kitchen’ house’ on the farm and granddaddy would cook for everyone.” 70 statesboromagazine.com
March/April 2022
Now Mary Beth and Lazar cook for everyone at their very own restaurant. Something both have dreamed about opening in Statesboro. In 2017 the sisters purchased the old Hooks BBQ building in Millen, Georgia, on the bypass, and it became home to Dolan’s and Honey Specialties. They had a Honey, Too location in Statesboro to serve their popular casseroles, cheesecakes, chicken salad and pimento cheese to hungry fans of their fabulous food here. Now Honey, Too, and the Millen Dolan’s have been combined in Statesboro into a welcoming restaurant that features vintage and modern décor with a menu that gets down to business. Order at the counter from a curated selection of mouth-watering appetizers and entrees like BBQ Pull Apart Bread or take home a whole rack of ribs. Chopped que by the pound is served with the best sweet pickles and your choice of one of the three signature sauces: Sister’s White, Seven Oaks Mustard or Grape Vine Road Red. To make it quick and easy, you can order ahead and pick it up at the drive thru. There are also daily green plate specials that feature a meat and three along with great sandwich and salad creations. If you want to sample food from The Most Fabulous Caterer, just visit the Honey Specialties

section of Dolan’s right inside the restaurant. In addition to the signature casseroles, pimento cheese and chicken salad, Honey Specialties offers their world famous cheesecakes, baked and packaged at the old Hooks building in Millen, and shipped all over the U.S. to all 50 states. “That’s a part of our business that’s really taken off,” said Lazar. “We now bake and ship hundreds of cheesecakes each week from our Millen kitchen. We bring those same great cheesecakes here to Statesboro for our customers to purchase by the slice or whole. They can also special order their favorite flavors for pickup at the store or ship to a friend.” In the Honey Specialties section there are packaged cheese straws, kettle popcorn, bottles of their signature barbeque sauces and specialty gift items for sale. Almost all items are locally sourced. Plus the fabulous bar! Locals have already chosen Dolan’s bar as a popular happy hour spot and a great evening location for music on the deck, with bar food like the tasty BBQ taquitos. Specialty cocktails carry the names of memorable hot spots from Statesboro’s past, like The Flame, Legends, Animal House and the Rocking Horse. There’s also a wide selection of craft beers, IPAs, seltzers and old vintage favorites, like the Miller High Life Pony. They pour Southbound and Sweetwater on tap. You can even get a decent glass of Pinot Grigio or Prosecco. The doors are open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. – 10:30 p.m., get there before 8:00 p.m. because the kitchen closes at 9:00 p.m. There’s often music on the deck in the evenings on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Bingo is also played on Tuesdays. It’s all located at 239 South Main Street smack dab in the middle of the Blue Mile. Call in orders at 912-259-9997. t all came to Tina Banks in a dream one night after praying about what she and her husband Jeff were going to do when the pandemic put a damper on their childcare businesses. She woke up with a Selfie Museum in mind. Not really familiar with a Selfie Museum, Tina Googled it and found that they were everywhere, mostly in larger cities. There was one in Atlanta, so the Banks visited it to see what all of the excitement was about. They came back home convinced that the idea could work in Statesboro and went to work on remodeling one of their daycare centers into Statesboro’s first Selfie Museum. For those who aren’t familiar with a Selfie Museum, Tina and Jeff created a space with multiple vignettes in which to take a Selfie with your phone! Or a video or a podcast. The possibilities are only limited by the imaginations of the many fans who rent the space. The idea is very appealing to the post-millennial crowd of 13 – 21 year olds. This market is the most responsive to the new venue and enthusiastically keeps it busy. “It also helps having Georgia Southern here,” said Tina. “We have lots of bookings who tell us, ‘We saw it on Twitter.’” It’s a genius idea when you think about it, because those who use the Selfie Museum post pictures of themselves and their surroundings, marketing the place for the Banks with each picture posted to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter! 76 statesboromagazine.com

THE CULTURE

In addition to the differently themed “rooms,” there are also props people can use in their photos. For example in the Money Room there’s a money gun that blows money up into the air while you’re taking your picture. The Airplane Room has a wine and cheese tray. The Soda Shop has a jukebox, hamburgers, fries and milkshakes to keep it real. There’s a British red telephone box for fans of the Beatles or Dr. Who. “Plus people can bring their own props and change clothes for the different settings if they want to,” said Tina. “We’ve even had local women’s clothing boutiques use our special backgrounds to showcase their new seasonal lines as they change out inventory.” Explore Your Selfie Museum also features a cutting edge 360° selfie camera with professional lighting rings. grip designed to turn 360° and create your own panoramic video with you at the center! To further enrich and enhance the experience for younger children, the Banks have also developed an Explorseum, a children’s indoor activity center born out of the need for a creative space where children can imagine, create, and explore in a magical, one of a kind environment. “The Explorseum is unlike any other children’s center in this city because we are the only one that combines and provides various enrichment classes like kids cooking, Spanish classes, Kindermusik, Tinkering, Art, and STEAM activities under one roof. It is a great place for children to burn off energy indoors and you won’t have to break your bank,” said Tina. It’s also a great place to rent for birthday parties, or to enjoy planned seasonal activities like Selfies with Santa, a special occasion which the Banks created to bring in a community of local vendors with their products for sale during the holidays. So far both the Explore Selfie Museum and the Explorseum have been a great success! “People have been booking parties for business meetings, Mom’s night out, Glow parties, Baby showers and Business showers, just to name a few,” said Tina. The Banks plan to keep the experience fresh by having an interior designer update the venues every few months. “We’ve been surveying our customers to see what other settings they’d like to see in the Museum,” said Tina. “We have four new sets in the works to give our clients something to look forward to.” They also have plans for an Easter Egg Hunt with other activities for the whole family to be held in April. Check their websites at www.exploreyourselfie.com and www.go.explorseum.com for additional info and updates. To keep customers safe, the Banks host all visits by appointment only and follow COVID safety guidelines. You can book for an individual visit, for a small group of friends, or a party! They’re open from noon – 8:00 p.m. They can be reached at 912-515-7022 or explorseum@gmail.com. “We came here in 2002 and moved in with my mom. We started at home with a daycare for six kids,” said Tina. “My husband worked at GSU and helped during his months off. He started the Children’s Ministry in our church. Over time we were able to expand to a larger home on Burkhalter and a daycare of 20 kids. From there we moved to the Market District. Today we have a network of childcare centers and two new unique experiences for the whole family. God’s plan has provided for us every step of the way.” Tina’s Selfie Museum dream came true! Yours can too if you take your next selfie at the Explore Your Selfie Museum at 2760 Northside Drive West, Statesboro. OW, is there a category Tandoor & Tap didn’t win? We are overwhelmed with their Fabulousness! It’s no wonder, with a unique combination of exotic Indian cuisine and creative cocktails by Statesboro’s local celebrity bartender Garrett Riggleman, plus music on the outdoor deck weekly, A.J. Jetwani, owner of Tandoor & Tap, has come up with a winning formula for great food and great drinks that’s killing it downtown! Are you a vegetarian? He’s got one of the most extensive menus in town with specialty items like Mutter Paneer, Aloo Tikka Masala, and Dal Saag. All created with careful attention to the freshest ingredients and great Indian flavor. Appetizers and Entrées are equally well crafted and range in heat from mild to spicy with a four star rating system that lets customers gauge the heat factor. Entrées cooked in the Tandoor oven have yet another level of flavor from the heat and smoke created when the small clay oven reaches temperatures upwards of 900° Fahrenheit! Before cooking, the fire is allowed to die down to coals so that the temperature remains consistent while the food is cooked. Food cooked in the Tandoor oven are served on a sizzling platter with great presentation and flair! Flatbreads like naan get slapped against the sides of the oven. They adhere to the super-heated surface, cook very quickly, and are peeled off when they’re done. Meats are usually cooked on long skewers that are either inserted directly into the oven or cooked over the mouth of the oven. “Tandoor & Tap prides itself on offering the very best in the Indian Cuisine,” said Jetwani. “Our dishes uncover the distinctive flavors and secret recipes from different parts of India. You will find an exquisite range of authentic dishes that are created with style and deep respect for the ingredients. The essence of Indian cuisine lies in the wonderful combination of spices and herbs that are blended to produce an authentic Indian taste. To complement the menu, an array of cocktails, craft beers, and wines has been thoughtfully hand-picked to provide a perfect complement to your meal.” 80 statesboromagazine.com

The Si r Sh o p 5X WINNER MOST FABULOUS MEN’S CLOTHING/FORMALWEAR
WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK FORTUNE
F
or over 50 years, The Sir Shop in the Statesboro Mall has offered both cutting edge and traditional style clothing for men. Owner Keith Boyette makes it a point to keep abreast of the very latest in men’s clothing trends. His commitment to offering the latest and best to his customers, along with fantastic personal customer service, has made The Sir Shop a five-time winner of the Most Fabulous Men’s Clothing/Formalwear store in Statesboro! “Each team member at The Sir Shop is fully committed to helping you find the right match for your needs,” said Boyette. “Whether formal or casual we have the staff and knowledge to get it right. The overall quality of our clothing and accessories combined with the knowledge of our staff is second only to our outstanding attention to each and every customer.” Founded in 1971 by Jim Long and Robert Lamb, The Sir Shop is now solely owned by Boyette who purchased it in the 1990s and moves it to the Statesboro Mall in 1998. He has never changed the original formula of personal customer service and great clothing lines started by Long and Lamb. “We believe in providing the very best customer experience for our clients,” said Boyette. “Whether outfitting a father-of-the-bride or a young man going to the beach with friends, we believe in treating each and every customer with the same attention to their own special needs and occasions.” March/April 2022

According to Boyette, The Sir Shop helps set the trends that larger stores tend to follow. “People probably think that the smaller, specialty retailers such as ourselves copy larger stores with the inventory that we carry, but that is not true at all,” Boyette said. “We actually are the retailers that will take a chance on discovering a new line. We are always looking for what is hot, or about to be hot, and take a chance and carry it. When it becomes popular with stores like ours, that is when the large retailer will pick it up, and that’s when we move onto the next hot thing.” That’s one important reason Statesboro Magazine’s readers believe The Sir Shop is the Most Fabulous! Boyette said the ability to change is the underlying tenet to his store’s continued success. “Being able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment has proven to be invaluable,” he said. “Our target market has gotten younger and younger. Five years ago, we didn’t have one t-shirt to sell, besides The Sir Shop logo t-shirt. Now, our target market demands a more casual look. Even in the workplace, for many, casual day is every day, but you still have to look nice, even when dressing casually. And we can certainly help someone do that.” The Sir Shop prides itself in finding the best fit for its customers both financially and product-wise, and always delivering what they promise! Many readers know The Sir Shop is the place to go for dress suits and formalwear. Prom and wedding season keeps the staff busy with custom measurements for each client and sales or rentals of complete ensembles, everything from bowties and cummerbunds to shoes. The Sir Shop also carries sunglasses, watches, casual and dress shoes and other accessories, from the most popular brands such as Costa Del Mar and Cole Haan. “We carry something for every man,” said Boyette. “You give us an idea of what you’re looking for and we can pull together an outfit for you that’s both complementary and distinctive.” Boyette really appreciates the support he gets from locals, students, and their parents. We’re loyal to the parents who have sent their kids to The Sir Shop during that transitional time in their lives, between high school, college and first jobs. And, we’re also here for the parents and grandparents in their maturing lives.” Plus Boyette supports the local economy. “We invest our money locally,” he said. “Many companies don’t and can’t do that. Corporate stores are loyal to stockholders. We’re loyal to our community and the customers that have given us so much success through the years.” Five times over. S

Dinner on the Grounds WRITTEN BY LAZAR BROWN OGLESBY PHOTOGRAPHY BY DILLON & CAROLINE FIELDS
N
ostalgia is a common ingredient in many of the recipes I like to prepare. I long for times gone by and the “old ways.” I tell folks I was born 100 years too late except I don’t know how I would fare without the comforts of air conditioning and indoor plumbing. Computers and technology drive me nuts, but they are a necessary evil this day and age. I have a Pinterest board filled with images of 1920’s kitchens complete with the enamel-coated cast iron sinks, old-timey ice boxes, women in colorful half aprons, and pantries filled with jars of homemade jams and pickles. I want to go back to the days of simple/fresh ingredients and a slower pace of life. Traditions that epitomize my love for the past are gatherings common in the South known as “covered dish suppers” or “dinner on the grounds.” I was first introduced to the cooking of the ladies of Millen United Methodist Church at covered dish lunches after Homecoming or a baptism. Long folding tables were raised in the church social hall. The tables were brimming with every glorious dish a child could imagine: fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, brown rice, butter beans, field peas, fresh greens, deviled eggs, strawberry trifle, egg custard pie, sweet tea, and lemonade to wash it all down. The food was served in a hodgepodge of crockpots, dishes with assorted china patterns, deviled egg plates, pots/pans, trifle bowls, Pyrex casserole dishes, and Tupperware. The line of hungry people grew to encircle the social hall and the high-spirited laughter and greetings of the crowd slowly began to calm as mouths and tummies were filled with food. My formative years were spent begrudgingly going to youth group lock-ins and Bible school when all I really wanted was to be in the kitchen with the ladies of the church. ReAnn Black (lovingly called ReRe by her family and friends), was my favorite. My mouth is watering thinking of all the delicious meals she prepared. ReRe’s pork loin was a thing of magic, perfectly juicy and tender. She told me how to prepare this lovely dish but mine did not turn out even half as delicious as hers. The pork loin was always accompanied by the perfect side dish, Mrs. Mary Pat McTeer’s brown rice. ReRe ran a tight ship. When it was her cooking groups’ turn to prepare Wednesday Night Supper, she would dole out tasks according to skill level. She prepared most of the food and we were allowed to roll silverware or fill salt and pepper shakers. My sister, Mary Beth’s, job was to butter the rolls. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Mrs. Sara Helen Harris’s macaroni and cheese. My family was not on her cooking team, but we shared the back pew with her and her husband,

STRAWBERRY TRIFLE INGREDIENTS:
1 16 oz. Sara Lee Pound Cake or Homemade 2 lbs. Strawberries ½ c. Sugar 1 pint Heavy Cream ½ c. Powdered Sugar 1 tsp. Vanilla PREPARATION:
Cube pound cake and set aside. Slice strawberries and toss in sugar. Allow strawberries to rest in refrigerator for a minimum of 30 minutes. You want the berries to create their own juice. While the berries are resting place cold cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla in a mixing bowl and beat with the wire whisk attachment until soft peaks form. Assemble trifle in a glass trifle dish or pretty clear glass bowl. Start with a layer of strawberries, then add a layer of pound cake, and top with whipped cream. Layer in this order again. Top with a fresh sliced strawberry and sprig of mint. Refrigerate until ready to serve. You can add blueberries and blackberries to create a festive Fourth of July dish!
MARY PAT’S BROWN RICE INGREDIENTS:
1 stick Butter 1 c. Uncooked Rice 1 can Beef Consume (10.5 oz.) 1 can French Onion Soup (10.5 oz.) 1 small can Sliced Mushrooms PREPARATION:
Melt butter and pour into an 8 x 8” baking dish. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Cover with foil and bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes.
Mr. Edison. We excitedly anticipated her famous mac-and-cheese served with baked ham and butter beans. The mac-and-cheese is cooked in a cheesy egg and milk custard. I think mac-andcheese made with a bechamel or cheese sauce is some type of Northern atrocity, but alas some folks just don’t know any better. Church cookbooks have a wealth of recipes 120 statesboromagazine.com

and knowledge. Long before celebrity chefs, the whole town was talking about the culinary magic created by the matriarchs that held our tightly knit communities together. Imagine being the talk of the town after serving your famous potato salad at the First Sunday Picnic held on the grounds at the Baptist Church. Times have changed, but we can carry on these sweet traditions. Gather with family and friends and prepare these perfectly Southern dishes. After all, you are just one great dish away from becoming the next small-town celebrity at your next gathering! S

rass. We love it, we hate it. It’s a great surface for touch football and it’s fun to cut with a ride on mower, but it’s finicky and hard to keep weed-free. As far as the environment is concerned, lawns are a disaster. Using a gas mower for one hour produces as much pollution as driving a car 350 miles, according to the EPA. Each year, homeowners apply 125 million pounds of pesticides to 37.5 million acres of lawns In the United States, according the National Gardening Association, killing the pollinators we need for plant biodiversity and a healthy food supply. The EPA found that ninety million pounds of chemical fertilizer are often incorrectly applied, and 17 million gallons of gas are spilled each year by homeowners filling mowers. Fertilizer chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorous run from our lawns into our water, creating algae blooms that can suffocate fish, degrade our drinking water, smother aquatic plant life, and really ruin a beach vacation. And yet, we still need natural surfaces on which we can stand, walk and play. The Heritage Alleé at the Botanic Garden is a case in point. The alleé is defined on both sides by American Hollies and Southern Magnolias planted as small trees by 122 statesboromagazine.com

Dan and Catherine Bland, the farming couple who donated the property for a garden. Statesboro residents love the sight of the green carpet between the rows of trees from Bland Cottage, and hundreds of weddings have taken place on that grass. As those “I Dos” have matured into marriages, the trees too have grown, creating a cathedral of shade overhead. While the shade is lovely for people, it is deadly to grass. After thousands of dollars of seeding and sod, it is clear that the Garden needs a new solution. It’s either the trees or the grass, and in this part of Georgia, shade wins. Garden staff designs by pondering. By living in a space, paying attention to its strengths and weaknesses, and exploring how other people around the world have solved similar problems, solutions to the Garden’s unique demands and set of circumstances emerge. As a homeowner, you have the same opportunity when considering the patchy places grass never grows, the uninteresting view out your window, or whether or not you are making the best use of your land by growing a grass monoculture. Perhaps you could help pollinators, add some interest and create some beauty by taking out some grass and planting a diversity of plants instead. First, consider your needs. One hundred and thirty people plus a wedding party needed to be able to gather under the Garden’s shady tree cathedral. Many of those people would be wearing high heels, so the surfaces needed to be walkable. We needed to maintain the integrity of the alleé extending from Bland Cottage, and wanted the space to be engaging and useful during the 90 percent of the time when there was no wedding. A good design would halt the storm water runoff that would rush down the alleé after a hard rain, leaving behind a mud field. Finally, the solution would replace a monoculture with diverse new gardens that would engage pollinators and visitors alike. Good gardening is often a lemons to lemonade situation. After much discussion and observation, the solution became clear. What remains of the Grass will be removed, and a path and patio will be installed. The first layer of these elements will be crushed stone, which will provide a firm foundation, slow runoff, and deter weeds. This will be topped with an attractive layer of crushed slate, which will interlock to form a good walking surface and tie existing brick and plantings in place. The remaining spaces will be filled with beautiful low shade gardens, adding to the Garden’s plant collections and creating an intriguing and engaging experience for anyone who travels the path, be they bride or casual visitor. During regular hours, the patio will feature benches for shady picnics and student study. The space will be transformed for weddings. Brides need not fear; the Garden has already set up chairs and a test wedding. The space will be stunning. Construction will begin after the last scheduled spring wedding and be completed during summer down time. It was difficult to imagine changing such an iconic space, and it might be challenging for you to let go of your grass. The Garden’s alleé transformation is an example of a large project, and it is not meant to intimidate. Start small, and replace a little grass with some imagination and plants. You might just be at the beginning of a beautiful relationship. S

Our Days Are Numbered WRITTEN BY REV. DR. JOHN WATERS
I
recently attended a funeral and found myself thinking about death. And life. But don’t those two go together? As I sat in the pew listening to the preacher describe the life of his recently deceased church member, I realized that one day people would gather to hear a pastor talk about my life. The crowd on that day may be large or small, but it dawned on me that more important than who comes to my funeral is what they say about me. I remind people regularly that the death rate in our community is 100%. No person has yet to discover a way to escape death, and sooner or later it comes for us all. The funerals we attend stand as stark reminders that our own funeral is coming, perhaps more quickly than we would like to think. When thinking about the brevity of this life compared to the expanse of eternity, the psalmist said to the Lord, “Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). That’s good advice for each of us, whether we think we have many days remaining or just a few. But what does it mean to number our days? Does it mean to live under a cloud of doom, knowing the death will come knocking regardless of who you are? Does it mean that life is short and fleeting, so our feeble attempts at extending it are nothing more than chasing the wind? To number our days means we understand the wisdom of making the most of each day. Yesterday is gone, and tomorrow has not arrived, so we only have today. Whatever may come our way during this current 24-hour period, let us be hopeful and joyful, making the 124 statesboromagazine.com

most of every opportunity. Number this day carefully, because once it has passed it will never return again. The wisdom of numbering our days is also seen in living with no regrets. None of us knows if this day is our last day, so keep short accounts with others and let nothing remain unhealed or unsaid that doesn’t need to be. I had a conversation with my mother on the last day of her life, but I didn’t know at that moment it would be the last time I talked with her. She was in the hospital, which was not unusual during her latter years, for a known problem with her kidneys and heart, and I phoned her on a Tuesday evening to see how she was feeling. We spoke briefly, and she stated that she wasn’t feeling very well. I told her to get some rest and said goodbye. Sadly, I didn’t realize that it would be my last goodbye. Within 30 minutes of my conversation with her, the call came that she had passed away. I’ve often pondered what I would have said differently had I known it was going to be the last time I spoke to her on this earth. Did I tell her that I loved her? Should I have insisted for her to stay on the phone a little longer? Was anything left unsaid that needed to be said? When we number our days, we accept that a recent conversation we had with someone may be the last one. Such a truth is quite sobering, and it makes us realize that words are not trivial, and unhealed hurts and unexpressed love are made worse by death. Indeed, we should number our days. So, back to the funeral. By this time, the pastor has finished, we’ve sung a hymn of faith, and family members have shared anecdotal stories and special memories about their loved one. But my mind is racing across my life, if not across eternity itself. Have I numbered my days? Do I trust the Lord knows when my last breath will be, even though I do not? Even though death is coming for all of us, we can journey through the days of our lives with peace, purpose, and joy. When we love others unconditionally, forgive freely, and rejoice openly, we are numbering our days in a healthy way. When we trust the Lord’s presence and purpose through the good times and the bad, we are numbering our days. Only He knows how many we have, so let’s live this day as if it might be our last day. S

he Lights are low. Conversation drifts in and out. Couples lean toward each other. Lonely men at the bar search the crowd for something they’ll never find...a face smiling back. The bartender wipes the mahogany one more time. Music completes the scene. Music fulfilling. Music that lifts the pain from the lonely. That adds to the couples’ leaning. Quietly the piano player, a lady in her mid-sixties, begins to sing. Sultry. Low at first. Everyone listens. She is quite something. Her eyes are closed. Her fingers trace the keys as Van Gogh his oils, with a touch, classical. Soon her mastery and its magic surround the lounge, the lonely, the loving... The singer, the pianist. The music of the evening is the one and only Emma Kelly. Wherever she plays becomes quality. The room fills with thrills. The very air becomes Broadway. Emma. Emma. How many know you? Thousands. Your music for over three decades has graced lounges, such as this one. Has brought joy to weddings, parties, church meetings, Boy Scout jamborees. Name it. She’s played it. She is magnificent. One fan calls her the John Wayne of music. “There ain’t nothin’ Emma can’t do when it comes to the piano.”

Another, a retired soldier, said, “She played for us when we had no one. She’d come to the base and sing. And we’d sing with her. She’d be our home and heart.” If the hundreds of little girls and boys Emma has accompanied at dance recitals could be found, they would say. “She put magic at our feet. When we saw Miss Emma across the stage lights... we knew we were safe. If we messed up, she’d stay with us and dot out our mistakes.” Her music epitomizes the very light within her. God blessed her with a talent she has given back in life every one of her days. She and George had ten children. They reared them right. Each graduated from high school and all but one from college. Emma was a pianist. George a sign painter. Together they provided a home of love and security. Music by the grace of God and Emma was their life. She encouraged them to join in. Play an instrument. Sing. Dance. “I loved to have my children with me when I performed.” Music still is her life. This very day, she will drive to Lyons, Georgia, for a dance recital, make a quick trip back through Statesboro to play for Rotary, and then on to Savannah for an evening with the loving, the lonely. She is an institution. She has lived in South Georgia all her life. Her music---forty years of it---lives throughout the world. Florence, Italy. The bridge, Ponte Vecchio: one of the walkways across the river. It is lined with gift stands. Stopping to admire one of the many treasures that lure the tourists, I heard a gentleman to my left say, in clear American, “Let’s get this one for Emma, honey, she’ll love it.” I mean the world. She is revered by mothers of little dancers. She is remembered by soldier boys far from home. Her music is the face that smiles at the lonely...That gathers closely the couples... that is the final hymn at church rallies. Emma, oh, you wonderful woman. Write her, c/o Statesboro... Let’s give her an encore. S
