4 ΧΡΗΣΙΜΕΣ ΠΛΗΡΟΦΟΡΙΕΣ • USEFUL INFORMATION Athens Health & Safety Athens is one of the world’s least dangerous capital cities: you can go almost anywhere, at any time of day, in complete safety. Even so, you are recommended to keep a close eye on your personal belongings in busy areas and on the metro.

When driving, but also as pedestrians, watch out for mopeds and motorbikes. There are lots of them around Athens and they don’t always obey the Highway Code. Τap water in Athens is safe to drink. However, you can find a wide variety of bottled water in shops and restaurants. Η Αθήνα είναι μία από τις πιο ασφαλείς πρωτεύουσες του κόσμου. Μπορείτε να περιηγηθείτε με ασφάλεια στις περισσότερες συνοικίες της πόλης όλες τις ώρες της ημέρας. Παρόλα αυτά συνιστάται να προσέχετε τα προσωπικά σας αντικείμενα σε πολυσύχναστα μέρη και στο μετρό. Αν οδηγείτε, αλλά και ως πεζοί, πρέπει να προσέχετε τα μηχανάκια και τις μοτοσικλέτες. Κυκλοφορούν πολλά στην Αθήνα και δεν υπακούουν πάντα στους κανόνες του ΚΟΚ. Στην Αθήνα μπορείτε να πιείτε το νερό της βρύσης άφοβα. Μπορείτε όμως να βρείτε και μεγάλη ποικιλία εμφιαλωμένων νερών στο εμπόριο

αλλά και στα εστιατόρια.

General Ticket information Γενικές πληροφορίες για τα εισιτήρια

Single ticket for a single use: costs 1,20 € / reduced (students) 0,60 €. Valid only for busses or trolley busses or Tram for one journey with one of the above buplic transport means.

Single ticket for 90 min: costs 1,40 € / reduced (students) 0,70 € . Valid for unlimited journeys to any direction, for 90 minutes, with combined use of all transport means Daily ticket costs 4,00 €. Valid for unlimited journeys, with all public transport means, for 24 hours after validation.

Weekly ticket costs 14,00 €. Valid for unlimited journeys, on all public transport means, for 7 days from the date and time of first validation.

Tickets are sold at automatic vending machines, available at all stations (Metro, Suburban Railway & Tram), as well as Bus & Trolley kiosks. Don’t forget to validate you ticket through Ticket Validating Machines either upon boarding on the vehicle (Bus, Tram and Trolley Bus) or entering the station (Metro, Suburban Railway).

Μονό εισιτήριο για 1 χρήση: κόστος 1,20 € / μειωμένο (μαθητικό) 0,60 €. Ισχύει μόνο για Λεωφορεία, Τρόλεϋ και Τραμ για μία διαδρομή με ένα μόνο από τα παραμάνω μεταφορικά μέσα. Μονό εισιτήριο 90’: κόστος 1,40 € / μειωμένο (μαθητικό) 0,70 €. ∆ιαρκεί 90 λεπτά μετά την πρώτη επικύρωση. Ημερήσιο εισιτήριο: κοστίζει 4,00 €. ∆ιαρκεί 24 ώρες μετά την πρώτη επικύρωση. Εβδομαδιαίο εισιτήριο: κοστίζει 14,00 €. ∆ιαρκεί 7 ημέρες, από την ημέρα και ώρα της πρώτης επικύρωσης.

Tα ενιαία εισιτήρια ισχύουν για πολλαπλές χρήσεις προς κάθε κατεύθυνση με οποιονδήποτε συνδυασμό από τα παραπάνω ΜΜΜ. Επικυρώστε το εισιτήριο με την επιβίβαση σας στο πρώτο Μεταφορικό Μέσο ή την πρώτη είσοδό σας σε σταθμό Μετρό ή Προαστιακό. Τα εισιτήρια πωλούνται στα αυτόματα μηχανήματα που βρίσκονται εγκατεστημένα σε όλους τους σταθμούς (Μετρό, ΗΣΑΠ, Προαστιακός & Τραμ) καθώς επίσης και στα ειδικά εκδοτήρια (Λεωφορεία & Τρόλεϊ). Τα εισιτήρια πρέπει να επικυρώνονται είτε στα ειδικά μηχανήματα πάνω στα οχήματα κατά την επιβίβαση (Λεωφορεία, Τραμ & Τρόλεϊ) είτε πριν την επιβίβαση με την είσοδό σας στους σταθμούς (Μετρό, ΗΣΑΠ & Προαστιακός).

(βλέπε σελ.5) Το αεροδρόμιο συνδέεται με την Αθήνα με 4 λεωφορειακές γραμμές: Χ93 από το Σταθμό ΚΤΕΛ του Κηφισού & της Λιοσίων / Χ95 από το Σύνταγμα / Χ96 από το λιμάνι του Πειραιά / Χ97 από το Μετρό ∆άφνη. Το εισιτήριο κοστίζει € 5, μειωμένο € 2,5, για μια απλή διαδρομή. Όλα τα λεωφορεία λειτουργούν 24 ώρες. Λεωφορεία ΚΤΕΛ συνδέουν το αεροδρόμιο με το λιμάνι της Ραφήνας, το Μαρκόπουλο, το Λιμάνι του Λαυρίου, τα Καλύβια και την Κερατέα. Το ταξί από το αεροδρόμιο έως το κέντρο της Αθήνας κοστίζει από € 35 έως € 55 συμπεριλαμβανομένων των διοδίων και των τελών αεροδρομίου και αποσκευών. Η διαδρομή διαρκεί 30 με 40 λεπτά αναλόγως της κίνησης. Οι μεγαλύτερες εταιρίες ενοικιαζόμενων οχημάτων έχουν τα γραφεία τους στο αεροδρόμιο.

Arriving by sea / Μέσω θαλάσσης If you arrive in Piraeus by boat, you can use the Metro to take you to the city centre (see page 5 for more info). There is a free bus service that runs inside the harbour you can use to take you there if you disembark far away from the main entrance. Taxis are available on the front of the main terminal.

Do note that they charge extra for pick up and luggage.

Διεθνής Αερολιμένας Αθηνών «Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος» Η κύρια είσοδος της πόλης που βρίσκεται 33 χλμ., ανατολικά της Αθήνας. Η πρόσβαση στο κέντρο μπορεί να γίνει με τα ΜΜΜ με ταξί ή φυσικά με ενοικιασμένο αυτοκίνητο. Το αεροδρόμιο συνδέεται με το Μετρό μέσω της γραμμής 3, Αιγάλεω - Αεροδρόμιο και το εισιτήριο κοστίζει 8 € ενώ το μετ' επι-

Από τον Πειραιά, μπορείτε πολύ εύκολα να μεταβείτε στο κέντρο της πόλης με το Μετρό (βλέπε σελ. 5). Για τη μεταφορά σας καθώς και των αποσκευών σας μπορείτε ναμετακινηθείτε ∆ΩΡΕΑΝ με τα ειδικά λεωφορεία εντός του κεντρικού λιμένα. Ταξί βρίσκονται διαθέσιμα έξω από τον κεντρικό λιμένα. Για παραλαβή από το λιμάνι καθώς και για μεταφορά αποσκευών υπάρχει επιπλέον χρέωση.

Arriving by air / Μέσω Αέρος “Eleftherios Venizelos” Athens International Airport The primary entry into Athens is El. Venizelos airport, situated 33 km (20.5 miles) east of Athens. To get to town you have a choice between metro, suburban railway, bus, taxi and, of course, car hire.

AIA is connected with Athens via the metro Line 3, Egaleo - Airport and the ticket costs 8 € while the return ticket costs 14€. Alternatively you can take the suburban railway to Nreatziotissa station where you can take the Metro to the city centre. (see page 5, for more info).

AIA is connected with the greater area of Athens via four bus routes / X93 from Kifissos & Liosion intercity bus stations / X95 from Syntagma/X96 from Piraeus Port/X97 from Dafni metro station. Tickets cost € 5, reduced €2,5 for one trip to/from AIA. All the above buses run 24hrs.

Regional buses (KTEL) connect AIA with the following destinations: Port of Rafina, Markopoulo, Port of Lavrio, Kalyvia & Keratea.

Arriving by train, long distance buses Μέσω τρένων ή υπεραστικών λεωφορείων The main train station (Larissis station) is not very far from the city centre. You can use the Metro (there is a station outside the main terminal) or a bus to take you anywhere in Athens. There are two long distance Bus stations. They are connected with the city centre and major Metro stations via buses. Taxis are available on the stations. Do note that they charge extra for pick up and luggage. Every year, hundreds of baby turtles begin the journey to the sea, but only roughly one in a thousand will manage to survive and return as an adult back to her birthplace after 25 years so that the circle of life may continue.

Sea turtles coexisted with dinosaurs and called the ocean their home long before man ever appeared on earth. Unfortunately, today their existence is seriously threatened due to the degradation of the nesting beaches and many more dangers adult turtles have to face at sea. Caretta caretta needs help from all of us so that she can continue to reproduce on her nesting beaches, but also to swim without problems in the sea.

If you really want to help the endangered sea turtles Caretta caretta survive, then you may adopt a baby hatchling! Of course, don't expect to carry it home!

It's a symbolic adoption which aims to support the protection programs of these endangered animals that lay their nests every year on our beaches.

Κάθε χρόνο εκατοντάδες χελωνάκια ξεκινούν το ταξίδι προς την θάλασσα, μόνο ένα στα χίλια όμως από αυτά θα καταφέρει να επιβιώσει και να επιστρέψει ως ενήλικη στον τόπο γέννησής της μετά από 25 χρόνια για να συνεχιστεί ο κύκλος της ζωής. Η θαλάσσια χελώνα συνυπήρχε κάποτε με τους δεινοσαύρους και κατοικούσε στις θάλασσες πολύ πριν ο άνθρωπος εμφανιστεί στη γη. Σήμερα δυστυχώς η ύπαρξη της απειλείται σοβαρά, λόγω της υποβάθμισης των παραλίων ωοτοκίας αλλά και των κινδύνων που αντιμετωπίζουν οι χελώνες στη θάλασσα. Η Caretta χρειάζεται την βοήθεια όλων μας για να συνεχίσει να μπορεί να γεννάει στις παραλίες ωοτοκίας της, αλλά και να κολυμπάει χωρίς προβλήματα μέσα στη θάλασσα. Αν πραγματικά θέλετε να βοηθήσετε τις απειλούμενες θαλάσσιες χελώνες να επιβιώσουν, τότε μπορείτε να υιοθετήσετε ένα μικρό χελωνάκι! Βέβαια, μην περιμένετε να το πάρετε σπίτι σας! 14/4/-31/12/2012 “WORKS FROM 20th AND 21st CENTURIES FROM THE MUSEUM COLLECTIONS” The Byzantine and Christian Museum boasts an excellent collection of modern and contemporary art. Divided into five sections the exhibition presents aspects of this collection: the reception of Byzantine art by European and Greek artists, its incorporation into Greece’s national cultural heritage by the artists of the Thirties Generation, the contribution of conservators to preserving Byzantine monuments, the role played by copies both in familiarizing a wider audience with Byzantine art and in documenting its monuments, and, finally, the impact of Byzantine culture on contemporary artistic production.

Η έκθεση παρουσιάζει τη συλλογή αυτή σε πέντε ενότητες: την πρόσληψη της βυζαντινής τέχνης από Ευρωπαίους και Έλληνες ζωγράφους, την ένταξή της στην εθνική πολιτιστική κληρονομιά από τους καλλιτέχνες της γενιάς του ’30, τη συμβολή των συντηρητών στη διάσωση των μνημείων, τη συμβολή των

αντιγράφων στη γνωριμία αλλά και στην τεκμηρίωση των μνημείων και τέλος την επίδραση του βυζαντινού πολιτισμού στη σύγχρονη καλλιτεχνική παραγωγή.

15/4/11 – 03/01/12 “MYTH AND COINAGE” The National Archaeological Museum, the Numismatic Museum and the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection are joining forces for the first time and are organising the temporary exhibition “MYTH AND COINAGE”, which will be concurrently presented in both Museums. The Exhibition highlights the relationship between the Greek Mythology and the coinage of antiquity and focuses on the depiction, management and use of myth on the faces of coins from the 7th century BC onwards.

Two complementary titles describe the content of the Exhibition at each Museum.

“The Illustration of the Myth” will be presented at the National Archaeological Museum while “The Use of the Myth” will be presented at the Numismatic Museum.

Educational programmes intended for children aged 8 to 14 will be conducted during the Exhibition. These programmes will be offered free of charge and by prior telephone arrangement.

Η Έκθεση προσφέρει έναν διάλογο ανάμεσα στην Ελληνική Μυθολογία και τη νομισματοκοπία της αρχαιότητας και εστιάζει στην απεικόνιση, τη διαχείριση και τη χρήση του μύθου στις όψεις των νομισμάτων από τον 7ο αι. π.Χ. ∆ύο υπότιτλοι δηλώνουν το περιεχόμενο της Έκθεσης σε κάθε Μουσείο. Στο Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό θα παρουσιάζεται “Η Εικονογράφηση του Μύθου”, ενώ στο Νομισματικό Μουσείο θα παρουσιάζεται “Η Χρήση του Μύθου”. Κατά τη διάρκεια της Έκθεσης, θα διεξάγονται εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα για παιδιά ηλικίας 8 έως 14 ετών. “IF TREES COULD SPEAK…” The exhibition displays 82 paintings and three- dimensional artworks by children from all over Greece, entries to a nationwide School Art Competition organized by the Educational Programme OIKADE of the Bank of Cyprus with the collaboration of the Museum of Greek Children’s Art during the 2010 – 11 school year. Art became the incentive and the means by which children were brought to think

In the artworks on show the tree takes a human aspect, it becomes a refuge, it offers its riches, it participates in children’s games, it answers man’s wishes yet it also gets hurt, it asks for help, it is mercilessly and irrationally exploited, it rebels and takes revenge. Paper, one of the basic riches offered by a tree, becomes a major element of creativity and inspiration. It is cut up, crumpled, drawn upon, painted, printed in view of being transformed, through the image and the power of the language of art, once more into a tree.

«ΑΝ ΤΑ ΔΕΝΤΡΑ ΜΙΛΟΥΣΑΝ...» Η έκθεση παρουσιάζει 82 έργα ζωγραφικής και κατασκευές παιδιών απ’ όλη την Ελλάδα. Τα έργα προέρχονται από τον Πανελλήνιο Μαθητικό Καλλιτεχνικό ∆ιαγωνισμό που διοργάνωσε το εκπαιδευτικό Πρόγραμμα Οίκαδε της Τράπεζας Κύπρου, σε συνεργασία με το Μουσείο Ελληνικής Παιδικής Τέχνης τη σχολική χρονιά 2010-2011. Ή τέχνη έγινε η αφορμή αλλά και το μέσον, για να προβληματιστούν τα παιδιά σχετικά με την αξία του δέντρου και του δάσους ως πηγή ζωής, τους κινδύνους που το απειλούν καθώς και τους τρόπους με τους οποίους μπορούμε να το προστατέψουμε. Στα έργα της έκθεσης το δέντρο προσωποποιείται, γίνεται καταφύγιο, προσφέρει τα αγαθά του, συμμετέχει στα παιχνίδια των παιδιών, «ντύνεται» με τις ευχές των ανθρώπων αλλά και πονάει, «ζητάει βοήθεια», γίνεται αντικείμενο αλόγιστης και απερίσκεπτης εκμετάλλευσης, «επαναστατεί» και εκδικείται. Το χαρτί, ένα από τα βασικά αγαθά που μας προσφέρει το δέντρο, μετατρέπεται σε βασικό υλικό δημιουργίας και έμπνευσης. Κόβεται, τσαλακώνεται, ζωγραφίζεται, τυπώνεται για να μεταμορφωθεί μέσα από την εικόνα και τη δύναμη της εικαστικής γλώσσας, ξανά σε δέντρο.

until January 29, 2012 / έως 29 Ιανουαρίου 2012 SOL LEWITT, LINE AND COLOR | SOL LEWITT, χΡΩΜΑ ΚΑΙ ΓΡΑΜΜΗ The Herakleidon Museum will present, from October 1st, 2011 to January 29th, 2012, an exhibition of works by the American artist Sol LeWitt. All the works, which were donated by the artist himself, are on loan from the New Britain Museum of American Art (Connecticut, USA). The exhibition has the support of the U.S. Embassy in Athens.

The exhibition comprises 115 works by Sol LeWitt are mainly prints (such as lithographs, etchings, and woodcuts), but his first oil painting as well as gouache, monotypes, and photographs are also included. The artist’s works are known for their geometric shapes and rich colors. Το Μουσείο Ηρακλειδών θα φιλοξενήσει, από 1 Οκτωβρίου 2011 έως 29 Ιανουαρίου 2012, έκθεση έργων του Αμερικανού καλλιτέχνη Sol LeWitt. Όλα τα έργα, δωρεά του ίδιου του καλλιτέχνη, προέρχονται από τη συλλογή του New Britain Museum of American Art. 9/11/2011 - 8/1/2012 “CARLOS GARAICOA, PHOTO-TOPOGRAPHIES” The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens presents from November 9th 2011 until January 8th 2012 the new work by internationally acclaimed Cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa titled Photo-topographies. The work is presented in the framework of the series ΕΜSΤ Νew Productions 2011, with commissions by the Museum for its Project Room that are realized with the kind support of Bombay Sapphire gin. In the installation that Carlos Garaicoa will realize and present for the first time at EMST, he uses photographs as documents for the creation of five polyspam objects. The artist utilizes the idea of the ruins as a permanent element of his work, the fragility of the urban tissue and the impermanence of buildings in particularly complex social contexts, relating it to the urbanistic history of Athens.

This work is also a metaphor of the photographic document to new materials, which has been one of the main focuses of his work in the last years.

«KΑΡΛΟΣ ΓΚΑΡΑΪΚΟΑ / PHOTO-TOPOGRAPHIES, 2011» Το Εθνικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης παρουσιάζει το νέο έργο του διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένου Κουβανέζου καλλιτέχνη Κάρλος Γκαραϊκόα με τίτλο Photo-topographies. Το έργο πραγματοποιείται στο πλαίσιο της σειράς ΕΜΣΤ Νέες Παραγωγές 2011, με παραγγελίες του Μουσείου για το Project Room, με την ευγενική υποστήριξη του Bombay Sapphire gin. Στην εγκατάσταση που θα πραγματοποιήσει και θα παρουσιάσει για πρώτη φορά στο ΕΜΣΤ, χρησιμοποιεί φωτογραφίες ως ντοκουμέντα για τη δημιουργία πέντε τρισδιάστατων πολυσπαμ αντικείμενων. Ο καλλιτέχνης αξιοποιεί την ιδέα των ερειπίων ως μόνιμο στοιχείο του έργου, τον εύθραυστο χαρακτήρα του αστικού ιστού και την παροδικότητα των κτιρίων που βρίσκονται σε ιδιαίτερα σύνθετα κοινωνικά πλαίσια, σχετίζοντάς τα με την αστική ιστορία της Αθήνας. Το έργο αυτό είναι επίσης μια μεταφορά της φωτογραφίας σε νέα υλικά, ένα από τα κύρια σημεία εστίασης της δουλειάς του καλλιτέχνη τα τελευταία χρόνια.

23/11/11- 26/2/12 “DINO VALLS. JOURNEY INTO SPANISH MAGICAL REALISM” Frissiras Museum present the retrospective

solo exhibition of the Spanish artist Dino Valls. Overall, 50 paintings of the renown painter will be presented.The most prominent trait of Dino Valls' painting is the way in which he manipulates the concept of time, whether it is historical (actual) or fictional, an element that contributes to his work unique traits. However, what captivates the beholder is its bizarre and utterly original way of reflecting reality. It is a way which often, through its painstakingly attention to detail, overcomes reality's boundaries by constructing a completely fictional world where everything bears a cunning resemblance to reality though it is in fact, a product of the painter's intellect; it is a painting manufactured exclusively in the artist's studio, a unique synthesis of allegories and symbols. Dino Valls' compositions aim to produce the feeling of an imminent threat, an underlying angst, which deserts he canvas and evades the viewer; in this end, he does not hesitate to use the employ the chilling representation of human body that often resembles that of anatomy textbooks, going back to the tradition of Flemish painting, mannerist composition and pre- Raphaelite forms fusing them with his own personal touch.

“DINO VALLS. ΤΑΞΙΔΙ ΣΤΟΝ ΙΣΠΑΝΙΚΟ ΜΑΓΙΚΟ ΡΕΑΛΙΣΜΟ” Το Μουσείο Φρυσίρα θα παρουσιάσει την αναδρομική έκθεση 40 έργων ζωγραφικής του Ισπανού καλλιτέχνη. Πρωταρχικό γνώρισμα της ζωγραφικής του Ισπανού Dino Valls είναι ο τρόπος με τον οποίο χειραγωγεί την έννοια του χρόνου, είτε πρόκειται για τον ιστορικό (πραγματικό) χρόνο είτε για τον φανταστικό χρόνο που συμβάλλει στον μοναδικό χαρακτήρα του έργου του. Αυτό όμως που εντυπωσιάζει τον θεατή, είναι ο εξαιρετικός ρεαλισμός του που συχνά, με την ακραία του αληθοφάνεια, περνά τα όρια της ίδιας της πραγματικότητας και γίνεται φαντασιακός. Ο Dino Valls ενδιαφέρεται ν' απεικονίσει την εσωτερική ψυχική κατάσταση των προσώπων του αλλά, για να το κατορθώσει, δεν διστάζει να κάνει χρήση μιας εξαντλητικά ανατομικής αναπαράστασης του ανθρώπινου σώματος ανατρέχοντας στην παράδοση της Φλαμανδικής ζωγραφικής στην οποία κατορθώνει να δώσει την προσωπική του σφραγίδα.

In the Museum’s neoclassical building, the collections that “narrate” the history of Hellenism over time were displayed in an enriched form.These collections comprises

many distinct categories totalling more than 40,000 items, illustrating the long and fascinating history of the Greek Civilization through a spectacular historical panorama: from antiquity and the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period; from the fall of Constantinople (1453) and the centuries of Frankish and Ottoman occupation to the outbreak of the struggle for independence in 1821; and from the formation of the modern state of Greece (1830) down to 1922, the year in which the Asia Minor disaster took place.

Antonis Benakis initially started collecting in Egypt at the beginning of the 20th century when at the same time many similar collections were created in Europe and America, which, in many cases, complement the Benaki Museum collection. The building which houses these collections is located in the historic centre of Athens, near the ancient Kerameikos cemetery.

The evolution of Islamic civilisation from the first appearance of Islam up to the Ottoman period and the corresponding development of Islamic art up to the 19th century are demonstrated by more than 8,000 works of art, including ceramics, gold, metalwork, textiles and glass, smaller groupings of bone objects, inscribed funerary steles and weaponry, as well as the marble-faced interior of a reception room from a 17th-century Cairo mansion.

The artifacts, organized as collections, exceed 30,000 and are dated from the 3rd to the 20th century. The permanent exhibit of the museum offers the visitor a unique opportunity to discover aspects of Byzantine and modern culture and to admire Byzantine and modern art from a museological point of view. In the first part of the permanent exhibit, the passage from the ancient world to the Byzantine world is depicted. The new section of the exhibit hosts collections of post Byzantine artifacts which bring to light various aspects of the historical period of Byzantium through to the modern age (15th-20th century). Many of these artifacts are being exhibited for the first time.

Fryssiras Museum

All the works, which were donated by the artist himself, are on loan from the New Britain Museum of American Art (Connecticut, USA). The exhibition has the support of the U.S. Embassy in Athens.

The exhibition comprises 115 works by Sol LeWitt are mainly prints (such as lithographs, etchings, and woodcuts), but his first oil painting as well as gouache, monotypes, and photographs are also included. The artist’s works are known for their geometric shapes and rich colors.

MIRAN The MIRAN Company was established in 1922 and has been growing ever since; two are the main products of the company produced massively, pastourma and soutzouki. The Miran Company is synonymous to quality and tradition and its name is known all over Greece. The quality and the unique taste of its products mainly of Pastourma, became a way of life for the lovers of the kind.

Pastourma is cured meat that has its roots in the Orient and most specifically in Armenia, Turkey and Cappadocia. It is wide spread delicacy in the Middle East as well as in the Balkan countries and should not be confused with pastrami.
