CASE STUDY HELPING THE COMMUNITY

WHAT WE DO As part of our pledge to promote opportunities for our staff to engage in CSR projects, and projects that look to better the local community, STA Travel took part in an employee volunteering scheme. This is an initiative that STA Travel have been encouraging employees to take part in for ever since the company was established.

Staff from the STA Travel Team have the opportunity to spend one working day a year volunteering their time to support members of the public, local community or a registered charity of their choice.

WHO IS INVOLVED These charities include Reach out in the Community, a local charity that aims to offer support to anyone in the local community who is struggling with the most basis essentials, including food and shelter. The Mad Dogs Street project is a community-led secular initiative, staffed by volunteers, providing food & clothes to the homeless of Manchester. Over the Christmas period, a number of our staff volunteered at the Cash for Kids Christmas appeal. This allowed thousands of children in the Manchester area the ability to have a present to open on Christmas day. Jack, who regularly helps at the Mad Dogs Street project said, “working in a corporate environment and in a 9-5 atmosphere it is easy to forget how easy it is to help people. Helping at the local shelter is a refreshing way to give back and I was surprised how easy it was. It’s lovely to see how thankful people are for my advice and tips, or even to just have

someone to chat to. I spent a long time helping one person out who I could really relate to, I was so happy to hear they moved out of the city and into permanent housing. I would encourage anyone to take up this volunteering opportunity, and I really appreciate STA Travel supporting me in wanting to help others.”

EMPLOYEE PROFILE “After attending volunteer training and having the chance to learn more about why people are homeless and what can benefit them, I proposed to the senior management team that we should change the way we promote traditional street giving. Myself and other members of the team have offered to volunteer our written services. This means that we will be helping the homeless in writing CV’s and proper interview etiquette. It’s things like these that we as a company hadn’t previously considered.”
