This year, Carmine & Dana Catalana ’76 P’07 join a prominent group of community, political, business and spiritual leaders who have been awarded the St. Augustine Prep Mendel Medal.

Mendel was a 19th-century monk and scientist regarded as the father of genetics. This is the school’s most prestigious award.

2022 GREGOR MENDEL MEDAL RECIPIENTS: CARMINE AND DANA CATALANA ’76 P’07

The 2022 Gregor Mendel Recipients Carmine and Dana Catalana have shared a life rooted in the values of education, family, and service to others. Carmine and Dana met during their high school years while riding the school bus – Carmine a 1976 graduate of St. Augustine Prep and Dana a 1978 graduate of Our Lady of Mercy Academy. Their relationship began a longstanding commitment and family legacy with both Catholic schools. Their shared values align perfectly with St. Augustine Prep’s Core Values of Truth, Unity, and Love.

Following his graduation from St. Augustine Prep, Carmine attended and graduated from Merrimack College. Dana went on from OLMA to attend Stonehill College, also in Massachusetts. Dana later attended the University of Pennsylvania where she received her Masters degree in Social Work. Carmine immersed himself in the family business, Cumberland Dairy, where he has worked for 42 years and has served as the President since 1995. Carmine has established himself as a respected leader in the industry as the business has continued to foster meaningful partnerships with well-known brands including McDonald’s, Wawa, and Rita’s.

Dana and Carmine started a legacy at the Prep and OLMA that has endured. Carmine’s three brothers, Frank ’78 P’14’17, Michael ’81, and David ’82 P’13 followed in his footsteps, while his sister Maria P’10 (P’12 OLMA), graduated from OLMA in 1984. She is married to iconic Prep faculty member and coach, Tony Iaconelli P’10. Dana’s brother Howard Kazan is a Prep graduate from 1979. Dana and Carmine remained active and supportive at both schools while their children attended the Prep and OLMANicholas ’07, Rachel ’04, and Rebekah ’12.

Their philanthropic and selfless work in the community has been a hallmark of Dana and Carmine’s relationship. Dana served on the Board of Directors at St. Augustine Prep for 8 years from 2013-2021 during the administration of both Fr. Donald Reilly and Fr. Robert

Murray. She chaired the Enrollment Management Committee where the Prep thrived in enrollment despite challenging economic conditions. Rose Davis, the 2019 Mendel Recipient and Board member commented, “I have the utmost respect and admiration for Dana Catalana. In every discussion and consideration at the Board level, Dana always advocated for the families and the boys. She emphasized the importance of knowing where the Prep came from and who it is that we serve.” Dana has also been on the Board at OLMA for the past seven years. She has seen a vast improvement in the facilities as the school has nearly doubled its enrollment during her tenure on the Board. Her work on the Board at Spirit & Truth Ministries with the Vineland Soup Kitchen and her weekly volunteerism to serve those in need has improved the lives of those in our local community. Carmine spent seven years on the Board of the Ronald McDonald House, following in the footsteps of his father Carmine III, also a past Gregor Mendel recipient. Carmine now serves on the Advisory Board at the Prep for Innovation and Experiential Learning where he and Dana have invested resources for enhancements to the Business program.

Carmine and Dana continue to lead by their generous example in both their professional and personal lives. In addition to their many loving family members, they are also the proud grandparents of Jackie and Bobby!
