A Catholic School

A Living Faith St Bede’s Manchester College was founded in 1876 by Cardinal Vaughan, then Bishop of Salford. Situated originally at Grosvenor Square in All Saints, we moved to our present site in April 1877. The College is a vibrant community, which has at its centre the Gospel values of loving God and loving our neighbour. We teach these values through our curriculum and we aim to live by them. Within each aspect of school life, we affirm these values. We aim to prepare the next generation of Catholics for life beyond school, at university and in the world of work. They should take with them the values they have learnt at school and apply them to life beyond, contributing positively to the communities in which they live and to society in general. We want them to hold influential positions in this society, and to have the courage and ability to lead by example. Central to our mission is respect for the individual. We create an environment which is safe, secure, respectful, nurturing, challenging and affirming for the pupils. The basis of the mission is recognition of Christ’s love for each person. Testament to this is the strength of relationships which exist in the College, staff with pupils, pupils with pupils and staff with staff. We aim to educate the young people so that they become theologically literate young adults, who understand their faith and can articulate their beliefs and values. They will understand the philosophical and theological principles of Catholic doctrine. When the time comes for our pupils to leave and go on to the next stage of their development, we want them to feel that they have been cared for and nurtured. They should have a sense of vocation and meaning to their lives. They should have a good understanding of themselves, of their strengths and areas for development. Each should be an instrument for use by God to shape His creation, willing to share their gifts and talents for the good of all. Part of our mission is to reach out to those who need our help,

including hospitals in Peru and South Africa, a street children’s mission in Sao Paolo, a school in Ethiopia, a hospice and a refuge for homeless people in Manchester. We see these works as vital to our continuing the work of Christ on earth and so that the pupils experience opportunities to help others. We hope that this work will continue with them in later life. We have high standards in all things, academic endeavour, sport, artistic pursuits, personal relationships and behaviour. The pupils work hard and achieve very high standards, ably assisted and directed by highly qualified and well motivated members of staff. St Bede’s is a very civilised community, where respect for self and for others is expected and where the Gospel values inform everything that we do. We believe very strongly that in order to educate each person, the partnership between home, school and pupil is critical. The role of the parents cannot be underestimated.

Admissions At 16+

Introduction

Special Education Needs And Disability

St Bede’s College is a Roman Catholic co-educational independent grammar school with 856 students on roll as of May 2009.

The College has limited facilities for disabled students, but will do all that is reasonable to comply with its legal and moral responsibilities under the Special Education Needs and Disability Act 2001 in order to accommodate the needs of applicants who have disabilities for which, with reasonable adjustments, the College can cater adequately.

The general rule as to admissions to the College is that the prospective student should be a baptized Catholic. However, applications are welcomed from non-Catholics, provided that the prospective student is a committed Christian, who wishes to participate in a Catholic grammar school education. The Headmaster may consider applications from other prospective student who wish to participate in a Catholic education. All student will be expected to attend all classes and services during College hours. The College’s mission statement refers to St Bede’s as “a Catholic school which endeavours to transmit the message of the Gospel and uphold the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. It is a College and not just a school. We are a community of believers aiming to provide for the young people in our care an excellence of education rooted in, and sustained, by our shared commitment to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.” The mission statement also emphasises that the vision of Cardinal Vaughan, our founder, was that “the opportunity to pursue educational excellence should be available for the Catholic children of Manchester.” More than 100 years later we aim to develop highly educated and articulate young men and women strong in their faith and possessing a conviction to establish God’s kingdom in this world.

ST BEDE’S C O L L E G E

S t B e d e’s C o l l e g e enquiries@stbedescollege.co.uk

Parents or guardians of an applicant who has any disability or special educational need should provide the Headmaster with full written details when applying for admission and any additional information at least one week before attending an interview, Open Day or Entrance Examination at the College. The College needs this information so that, in the case of any applicant with particular needs, we can assess those needs and make sure that the College can provide adequately for them throughout the admission process (including at interview, on attendance at the College and during the Entrance Examination, as appropriate). The College will consult with parents or guardians about the adjustments which can reasonably be made for the applicant both during the admission process and later as a student.

Pastoral Care At St Bede’s, we believe that Pastoral Care is an essential aspect of educational provision. We are rightly proud of the reputation we have developed for helping you to become young adults who are confident and caring, aware of your uniqueness, yet willing to sublimate your wishes in pursuit of the common good. We want you to be polite and happy, to show initiative and, above all, to be mature, honest, kind and faithful in your relationships. The pastoral support we offer you would be less effective if we did not acknowledge the shared nature of our role with your parents. Because of this, we strive to involve parents in every aspect of your development, encouraging dialogue about your progress and achievement, being happy to listen and support when personal circumstances encroach upon school life and offering an orderly and firm, but fair disciplinary structure in which you can exercise initiative, develop and ultimately succeed. Your academic, spiritual, social and moral development will be presided over by a the Sixth Form Team who work closely with your Form Tutors and the Deputy Head with responsibility for Pastoral Care. The College Matron, the Head of Religion and the resident clergy are a vital part of the whole system. They offer an approachable and nondisciplinary alternative to students whose needs cannot be catered for within the formal pastoral structure. It is our belief that when a young person who enters the wider world beyond family and school with an understanding of the importance of respect, love and humility, as exemplified in the life of Jesus Christ who is our model, will be well equipped to deal with the rigours of life. It is respect - for self, for each other and for all groups of society - which is at the heart of pastoral care at St Bede’s.

The Sixth Form Curriculum explained Our Sixth Form curriculum offers a unique variety of subjects to study with 26 different AS and A2 options being offered and with almost every combination of subjects being possible due to our very flexible timetabling. We continue to believe that a Sixth Form education encompasses not just the academic but must integrate physical, moral and spiritual development too. The Sixth Form methods of study which we inculcate offer an appropriate introduction to university teaching whilst retaining the high degree of support, practical assistance and pastoral care that is essential for the well being of our students.

In the Lower Sixth you will study 4 subjects at AS level, allowing a broad base of academic interests. A General Religion class supports your spiritual growth as a young adult and a Wednesday games afternoon allows your to pursue wide range of leisure and physical fitness activities. You will be placed under the care of a highly experienced tutor who works within a small tutor group to provide a very high level of individual pastoral and academic care and support. That member of staff will very clearly understand the pressures you may feel as you develop your Sixth Form career and will act as your personal mentor for two years. Direct contact time in class is balanced by study periods when you may pursue independent research and encounter a different style of more self-directed learning. The Upper Sixth usually finds a students choosing to specialise in 3 courses to A2 standard to fulfil university entrance requirements. General Religion and Games continue to form key

elements of a balanced programme, but we recognise that you may feel the need for Study Skills as examinations approach. Extension lessons are available until the interview season and are then gradually replaced by specialist Study Skills classes. To prepare our students for life beyond the Sixth Form and to give a broad based education, we provide classes collectively called Life Skills. Time will be made available to facilitate the completion of the electronic university application form. There continue to be periods of individual study. You may wish to study for 4 A Levels after suitable advice has been sought as to the benefits of this course of action, or you may take a further AS, and again, we hope to offer the flexibility of approach to allow this to be part of a realistic programme of study. For some students we offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which develops skills of individual learning. Our Sixth Form curriculum has been proven to allow students to deliver their full academic potential. Of equal importance to us as a Catholic community, however, is that our Sixth Form students enter the world beyond St Bede’s as confident, socially compassionate and caring men and women who understand how they can contribute to furthering the Christian case in Britain.
