From the Headmaster There’s no secret to the success of St. Benedict’s Prep. We simply expect every student to give 100 percent — then we show them how. As shown on the cover, we set that bar freshman year with a 50-mile hike down the Appalachian Trail. The Backpacking Project foreshadows the St. Benedict’s experience. It introduces our students to the importance of teamwork, leadership and personal excellence — character traits they’ll strengthen throughout their time at the School. No one hikes the trail alone, and no one gets left behind. At St. Benedict’s, every boy is respected as an individual. “What hurts my brother hurts me.” Most importantly, the Project teaches boys, many from troubled homes, that their brothers are counting on them. When they’ve all given 100 percent on the trail, they can all get back on the bus together. Years later, when they’ve given their all to their studies, virtually 100 percent of them graduate and almost every one goes directly on to college. Inside, you’ll find our Annual Report for the fiscal year 2014–2015. Our total number of donors hit a record high, more than 1,500 of whom increased their giving from last year. And 526 alumni and friends invested for the first time. We believe the lessons young men take from The Hive last a lifetime, and the generosity of this community suggests we’re right. Distinguished Teacher Named Athletic Director Dean of Faculty Michelle Tuorto presented the 2015 Raymond J. Sachs Sr. ’25 Award for Distinguished Teaching to St. Benedict’s Hall of Famer Tom Leahy ’77. The Hive graduate and 25-year veteran educator and coach has also recently been named Athletic Director. The Sachs Award is presented annually to a faculty member nominated by peers for outstanding work with students in the classroom and beyond. Mr. Leahy teaches health and physical education and founded the School’s groundbreaking Fit and Trim Program.

THE HIVE WELCOMES FIVE St. Benedict’s Prep welcomes five new teachers. Jeremy Welters and Chris Heitzig will join us as Benedictine volunteers from St. John’s University in Minnesota. Bill Petrick, who taught at The Hive in the 1980s, returns to teach freshman English. Algebra instructor Alexa Lewandowski will also help re-launch the Book Store. And DaQuan Bashir will teach Math 1 and Algebra and help coach the track team.

Inspirational speaker and Catholic broadcaster Deacon Harold BurkeSivers, Jr. ’84 has dedicated his most recent title, Behold the Man: A Catholic Vision of Male Spirituality, to the Monks of Newark Abbey, along with an acknowledgment to longtime Athletic Director and wrestling coach Mike DiPiano H ’82. Known worldwide as the Dynamic Deacon, the St. Benedict’s alumnus is a highly sought-after speaker. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and a master of theological studies from the University of Dallas, and is a Benedictine Oblate of Mount Angel Abbey. He hosts his own weekly broadcast, From the Rooftops, on Radio Maria, and is the host of several popular series on EWTN television, including Behold the Man: Spirituality for Men.

Project: Opera “It was my first opera, and it was a good one!” That was the verdict, spoken by a St. Benedict’s student to Drama Guild Director Pat Flynn H ’95, after the Metropolitan Opera’s October 14 performance of Verdi’s Otello. Dozens of St. Benedict’s Prep students will experience some of the world’s greatest operas this year, thanks to a collaboration with the Met and the school-wide Interdisciplinary Project. Not only will they attend four operas — Otello, Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Puccini’s Turandot and Madame Butterfly — they will also integrate opera into their own artistic development throughout the fall/winter terms and spring phase. Students have also been invited for a live dress rehearsal and backstage tour of Strauss’s Die Fledermaus. Tying in to the first opera experience, the Drama Guild has mounted Shakespeare’s Othello for its fall production. “Shakespeare demands a lot of the same values as opera,” says Ms. Flynn. “The intensity and demands of the language, the vocal demands, the scale of the production—it’s easy to make comparisons between what the opera singer is doing and what the Shakespearean actor is doing.

Dr. Jeremy Fletcher’s Jazz Band class will also focus on jazz adaptations of Otello, while the spring Woodwind Ensemble will be playing music adapted from all of the operas. “As a music teacher, there are a lot of immediate connections to work with here,” says Dr. Fletcher, “but in addition to music, opera as an art form encompasses a lot of disciplines, including stage design, set design, costuming, acting and so on.” Art students will take up that challenge by drawing visual inspiration from the themes of The Magic Flute.

A GREAT YEAR FOR THE GRAY BEES In addition to winning their tenth national soccer championship, the Gray Bees racked up a wide range of accomplishments. Here are some of the highlights:

Basketball: The team won the New Jersey Prep A Championship as well as the New Jersey Independent Schools Athletic Association Basketball Championship. The back-court duo of Trevon Duval ’17 and Nate Pierre-Louis ’17 were named to the Star-Ledger Prep Basketball All-Star first team.

Wrestling: Enkbold Sukhbaatar ’16 (138 lbs.), Tyler Hayes ’15 (138 lbs.) (Naval Academy Prep) and Muqkadeen Poole ’15 (St. John’s) earned All America honors at the National Prep

Wrestling Championships. Muqkadeen was honored at the Men of Essex Awards Dinner and received the Presidential Award at the St. Benedict’s Senior Dinner, and Tyler was honored at the Essex County Athletic Directors Association’s Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner.

Track: The track team won the 3x400 hurdles, distance medley relay, 4x800 team shot put and team discus to take first place at the State Prep relays. Denzell Pettway ’15 (Moravian College) and Justice Mentor ’17 won the

shot put relay and set a school record at the Essex County relay. Denzell also won the shot put at the State Prep Track and Field Championships. The 4x400meter relay team came away with first-place honors at the Loucks Games. Edwin Rutto ’16 won the 1,000 and 3,200-meter runs at the Essex County Track and Field Championships.

How did you first discover St. Benedict’s Prep? When I was applying for high school, everyone I knew was going to Essex Catholic. St. Benedict’s offered me a $500 scholarship when tuition was about $1,000. That was a lot of money at the time to an immigrant family from Haiti. I didn’t attend St. Benedict’s all four years. When I was a sophomore, I was accepted to a guest program at Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J. I look at my two years there as an important opportunity. Some people have a hard time transitioning to college because the socio-economic difference from this world in Newark can be huge. I got that early. I got used to living away from home and being broke among people with a lot of money. I remained on the roster at St. Benedict’s as a “scholar in residence” even while I attended Lawrenceville, so while I participated in the Lawrenceville graduation ceremony, I consider myself a St. Benedict’s alumnus.

I believe in the mission of this school, so whatever I can do to achieve that mission, I’m willing to do it. How did you start working at St. Benedict’s? I started working here five days after graduating from Brown University. Throughout college, my best friend from St. Benedict’s, Harold Guadalupe, and I had stayed very much in touch with the School, so I stopped by to say “Hello.” I walked into Fr. Ed’s office, found him sitting there with Keith Corpus, the head of the English Department. Fr. Ed looked up and said, “I need an English teacher. You could do it.” I said, “What are you talking about?” There is no core curriculum at Brown; I hadn’t taken a single English class in four years. And here Fr. Ed was telling me I should teach English! Then he asked, “What if I get Harold Guadalupe to teach biology?” Now, I knew that Harold had just graduated from Swarthmore and had no intention of teaching biology at St. Benedict’s. But I’m sure Fr. Ed gave Harold the same angle: “What if I get Didier for English?” Well, he got both of us. And that’s how I started teaching at St. Benedict’s 25 years ago. Teaching English was only the beginning, right? Within a year or two, I was teaching three sections of Freshman English, French 1 and coaching tennis. Soon, I decided I should get some business experience. Although I said I’d never go into business, I felt I should learn something about it. When I told Fr. Ed, he said, “You can get that experience at St. Benedict’s!” and he made me Assistant Director of Development under Paul Thornton in the

Development Office, now known as the Advancement Office. Six years later, I started law school at night. In 2005, I left St. Benedict’s to practice commercial real estate law, and came back to the Advancement Office in 2010. What spurred your move from the Advancement Office to your new role as Dean of Seniors and College Placement? As most stories at St. Benedict’s begin, Fr. Ed called me into his office and said, “Hey, I’ve been thinking…” They had been searching for someone to fill this role, and wanted to hire internally. They really prioritized finding someone who knew the kids, who could advocate for them. What are your goals for the College Placement Office? There are a few things. First, I’d like to follow up more with recent graduates. We’ve achieved a phenomenal rate of alumni who stay in college, but it could be even better if we keep in touch and help them navigate some of the challenges they face. For instance, financial aid is always an issue. A student might get a nice aid package freshman year, then tuition goes up a little bit or the college reduces their aid a little bit each year. I think they’d be better engaged as alumni if we engage them more when they are in college. Second, we currently run an ACT and SAT prep program with the teachers on weekends, but I’d like to establish a more formal program for juniors and seniors. And third, I’d like to help kids visit schools a little farther away, and support more college tours. Guys visit schools close by, but lots of times these guys are choosing schools sight unseen. It is working, but it could be better if they could actually see the campuses. Is this a big change from Advancement? I see this as a continuation of my alumni work. The college placement counselor is one of the last people the seniors interact with on a regular basis, and the one they update regularly. We can be an important connection for the alumni office. Teacher, coach, advancement officer, lawyer, Dean… what’s next? Wherever I’m needed. Wherever I can help. Fr. Edwin gets a lot of people to think outside the box about talents they never thought they had or interests they didn’t know they had. I believe in the mission of this school, so whatever I can do to achieve that mission, I’m willing to do it.
