Study ROuteS There are a lot of different options when it comes to post-16 study and it can often get confusing with the different types of qualifications and levels of study available to you! The first step is to figure out whether you will be studying on a ‘Level 3’ or ‘Access to Level 3’ study programme. Here you will find some information on each Level and the qualifications you need to access them.
GREAT MINDS DON’T THINK ALIKE We love the fact that students of different abilities and talents come to St Brendan’s to study, so we offer three distinct study programmes which cater to all. Whether you are on our Access to Level 3 programme, our Level 3 programme or our ASPIRE programme, we will stretch, challenge and support you every step of the way. Your GCSE results will determine which programme you study:
A CCESS TO LEVEL 3 4 GCSE grade 3s (including 3 in English Language and 2 in Maths)
L EVEL 3
5 GCSE grade 4s (including English Language or English Literature)
L EVEL 3 ASPIRE
An average GCSE grade score of 7.5 (mainly 6-9s) We also offer a range of different optional extras to suit diverse interests and career plans - these will be explained over the next few pages.
36
THE ST BRENDAN’S PYRAMID OF SUCCESS
2 HOURS ENRICHMENT OR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
YOUR SUCCESS 14 HOURS OF INDEPENDENT STUDY
16 HOURS OF LESSONS
No matter what programme you follow at St Brendan’s, the level of independent study required at college is significantly different to school. The St Brendan’s Pyramid of Success represents the minimum amount of hours that you will need to commit to your college work and college related activities each week to ensure you perform at your best.
37
Access To Level 3 The Access to Level 3 programme is designed for ambitious students who would like to study at Level 3, but haven’t quite met the entry requirements to do so. If things didn’t quite go to plan at GCSE level and you need to build your skills and develop confidence before taking the next step, this pathway is for you. Designed with the future in mind, Access To Level 3 is a one year programme during which you’ll study a customised timetable equivalent to 4–6 GCSEs. You can select a mixture of courses to suit your personal ambitions, and choose to study either all BTECs or a mixture of BTECs and GCSEs. We have a range of pathways on offer including: Business Sport Health & Social Care Public Services PLUS a range of GCSEs including English and Maths Retakes. After completing the programme, most students continue their studies at St Brendan’s for another 2 years on a Level 3 programme of A-levels and/or Applied courses e.g. BTECs.
ACCESS TO LEVEL 3 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 4 or more GCSEs at grade 3 including at least a grade 3 in English Language and grade 2 in Maths

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION (EPQ)
The EQP is an independent research project which involves an essay of 5000 words or creating an artefact which might be anything from a piece of art or performance to an iPhone app. You can study any subject topic you wish but it’s a good idea to choose a topic that you're interested in, or want to know more about. You’ll hone the skills needed to become an independent learner, helping you prepare for the demands of further education or employment. The EPQ is highly valued by universities as it demonstrates your dedication to independent learning and is often included in offers made by institutions to applicants. We will tell you all about the EPQ in Year 12 so that you can decide whether to pursue this option. HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR COURSES With over 60 courses to pick from at St Brendan's, choosing just 3 can often be a daunting experience! If you're struggling to decide, here is some advice to help you make the right choices for college and your future... ENJOYMENT & SUCCESS It is really important that you select courses you will enjoy and flourish in. You will be studying these subjects for two years, so motivation and enjoyment is key! Now is the time you can finally have a say in what you learn – ensure you take advantage of that!
52
ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS: What subjects do you enjoy at school? What subjects are you good at?
Would you like to continue studying these? Do you have a career goal in mind? If so, do you know
what qualifications you need to get you there? Do you want to study a particular course at university?
If so, do you know what A-levels you need to get onto the course? How open do you want to keep your future study and
career choices? What type of learning do you enjoy more?
Do you respond best through exams or coursework, practical or theory?
HOW NOT TO CHOOSE YOUR SUBJECTS 1. Don't select courses based on what your friends are doing – you will have plenty of time to see them outside of lessons and you’re sure to make lots of new friends during class too! 2. Don’t feel you just
have to stick to the subject you studied at school, now is your chance to study something new!
3. Don't just think about

ACCOUNTING Behind every successful business is a skilled accountant. Enter into a world of decision making, valued advice and vital perspective; being an accountant isn’t just about numbers. Throughout this A-level you will build knowledge and understanding of key concepts, principles and techniques that you can then apply to real-life scenarios. You will develop the ability to solve problems logically, analyse data methodically, make reasoned choices and communicate your findings effectively. You will learn the underpinning principles of this rewarding and respected profession, from recording financial transactions to measuring and evaluating business success. Accounting A-Level is one of the only courses you can study that has a direct route into employment. Many students have gone on to secure apprenticeships in local accountancy firms, whilst others are recruited by international firms offering ‘School Leaver’ programmes leading to professional qualifications. Of course, you may want to go through the university route and this can provide you with some outstanding opportunities, because as well as the traditional Accounting or Finance related degree courses, several of the global accounting practices (such as KPMG, PwC and Ernst & Young) now offer their own degree programmes, in association with prestigious universities.

HISTORY Are you curious about why the world is the way it is? Were you enthralled by the heated debate around Edward Colston’s statue being toppled, briefly placing Bristol at the centre of world events? By studying one of our fascinating History courses, you will discover more about the world you live in today. Choose from courses which include the history of Britain, America, China, Russia and West Africa. Through our two modern courses, you will explore what the experience of warfare was like for Britain over a period of 150 years. In Year 1, choose between finding out why Russia and China have such different forms of government and the events that led to their rise as global superpowers; alternatively examine why liberal democracies like Britain and America, despite a shared history, took such different paths in the 20th century. It’s your choice and you determine the direction you want to study. Will it be communism or capitalism, revolution or democratic rule? If you wish to travel further back in time, our Early Modern course is the one for you. Find out about the impact the Early Tudors had on England, discover more about the witch craze that gripped Early Modern Europe and America, with a particular focus on the Scottish Witch Trials and explore the rise and fall of West African Kingdoms. PHILOSOPHY Is life meaningful or is it absurd? What does it mean to say that “I” exist? And who is this “I” anyway? Is there such a thing as “good" or "evil"? Or is it simply the individual who decides? Philosophy deals with the bigger questions in life which all human beings will inevitably ask themselves at some point. It is about observing, questioning, and making an attempt to understand the world around us as well as our own place within it. In this course you will focus on four key areas: Epistemology (theory of knowledge), Ethics (moral philosophy), Metaphysics of God and Metaphysics of Mind. In doing so, you will consider the key ideas of some of history’s most influential thinkers, from Plato, Aristotle and Aquinas, to Descartes, Anselm, Kant, Hume, Locke and Russell. A-level Philosophy will also provide you with analytical, verbal and written communication skills that are highly valued by employers. You will develop the independent study and close reading skills required to follow a range of academic pathways and careers - from law, humanities or journalism, to business, education, science, technology and the arts. SPANISH Do you have an interest in Hispanic society, culture, traditions and politics, which add colour to Spanish-speaking countries? Do you enjoy constructing your own arguments in a foreign language? Are you keen to participate in discussions and good at listening to others? Then Spanish is for you! As a Spanish student, you will study technological and social change, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. You will also study highlights of the artistic culture of Spain, including music and cinema, and learn about political engagement in the countries where the language is spoken. In addition, you will explore the influence of the past on present-day communities. Throughout your studies, you will learn the language in the context of the country and the issues and influences which have shaped them. You will study a text and a film and have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of your choice. Many students go on to study a combined degree of Spanish and other subjects, or a degree in Spanish. Equally, studying Spanish will open doors to many other degrees where the skills acquired in the course are valued: Criminology, Law, Accountancy, History and more. Other students have found the communication skills and global outlook very useful in apprenticeships and the world of work straight after college.
