University of Bristol - International Affairs Society FREE EVENTS We are the university’s leading forum for debate and discussion of key international, political and economic issues. We host speaker-driven events focused on a broad range of pressing issues in current affairs, whether it be Brexit, inter-generational inequality, or race relations. With this in mind, we are looking to engage with students in the local area. As such, we are offering free entry to any of our talks (the schedule of which is attached) to your students. The location of each talk is confirmed beforehand on our Facebook page, which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/BristolIAS/?epa=SEARCH_BOX.
We believe this is a fantastic opportunity to not only interact with university students, but to engage with speakers who have vast experience and expertise in current affairs. These aspects act as excellent preparation for both university and the wider world, while also enriching their current studies through exposure to issues beyond the confines of the curriculum. Aside from the offer of free entry, which stands for any of our talks this year, we are also open to running workshops for interested students in which they can talk to our committee about anything related to higher education. We believe this more informal and intimate setting would be more enlightening to your students than the often generalised nature of an open day. Our committee is made up of a mixture of first, second, and third years, and comprises students studying a range of subjects including Politics and International Relations, Economics, History, and Maths, so we believe we are well-equipped to answer any questions.

Free tickets are now available to book for the Royal Institution’s Christmas Lecture Series, which will be streamed live at the University of South Wales. USW is one of 20 venues across the UK which will be streaming the lectures live from the RI in London. The lectures will also be broadcast on BBC Four between Christmas and New Year. ‘Secrets and lies: The Hidden Power of Maths’ In these lectures, mathematician and TV presenter Dr Hannah Fry will unmask the hidden numbers, rules and patterns that secretly influence our daily lives…in ways we could never imagine. She exposes how our gut instincts are often unreliable, while an unseen layer of maths drives everyday life in powerful and surprising ways. Life’s most astonishing miracles can be understood with probability. Big data dictates many of the hot new fashions we follow. Even our choice of what we watch on TV, or our choice of who we marry, is secretly influenced by computer algorithms. In a series of lectures packed with mind-boggling demos and live experiments, Hannah shows us how to decode life’s hidden numbers; to help us all make better choices, sort fact from fiction, and lead happier lives. But she also warns how our unwavering faith in figures can lead to disaster when we get the sums wrong.
