New this week!
University of Oxford Access Scheme ‘UNIQ’ Applications open 2nd December and close 27th January UNIQ is open to students studying in their first year of further education, who are based at UK state schools/colleges. Students make a single application between December and January and can be selected to participate in one of two activities: UNIQ Digital or UNIQ Spring and Summer. UNIQ Spring and Summer gives you a taste of the Oxford undergraduate student experience. You will live in an Oxford college for a week, attend lectures and seminars in your chosen subject area, and receive expert advice on the Oxford application and interview process. The timetable also allows plenty of time for social activities; in the evenings you are free to tour the city, sample some of the University's sports and cultural facilities, and let your hair down at the farewell party. UNIQ Digital provides comprehensive information and guidance on the university admissions process, and aims to give you a realistic view of Oxford student life through videos, activities and quizzes. The platform offers a range of forums where you can discuss both academic and social topics. These forums are monitored by student ambassadors, who are always on hand to answer questions and offer support.

Routes to policing to change in 2020 The College of Policing’s long-term strategy, known as Policing Vision 2025, will see the police service professionalised and will require all future police recruits to hold a degree at the point that they are confirmed in post. There will be three entry paths to policing and these will be via: Apprenticeship – You can join as a constable, and follow an apprenticeship in professional policing practice. This usually takes three years and when you successfully finish the programme, you will complete your probation and achieve a degree. Degree-holder entry – If you already have a degree (in any subject), you can join the force and follow a work-based programme, supported by off-the-job learning. This takes approximately two years, and you will receive a graduate diploma in professional policing after completing your probation. Pre-join degree – You can carry out a three year degree in professional policing and then apply to a force and follow a shorter on-the-job training programme. At the University of Law, the BSc Professional Policing degree will run at our Birmingham, Leeds and London campuses in 2020, and includes modules in: Forensic and criminal psychology Investigating serious crime Intelligence and digital policing Counter terrorism Cybercrime Both the Apprenticeship and the Pre-join degree take the same amount of time at 3 years. While the Pre-join degree is designed for students who wish to become a Police Constable, it also provides a foundation for further postgraduate study in a relevant area like Criminology as well as careers in the wider Security and Criminal Justice Sector.

University of Bristol - International Affairs Society FREE EVENTS We are the university’s leading forum for debate and discussion of key international, political and economic issues. We host speaker-driven events focused on a broad range of pressing issues in current affairs, whether it be Brexit, inter-generational inequality, or race relations. With this in mind, we are looking to engage with students in the local area. As such, we are offering free entry to any of our talks (the schedule of which is attached) to your students. The location of each talk is confirmed beforehand on our Facebook page, which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/BristolIAS/?epa=SEARCH_BOX.
We believe this is a fantastic opportunity to not only interact with university students, but to engage with speakers who have vast experience and expertise in current affairs. These aspects act as excellent preparation for both university and the wider world, while also enriching their current studies through exposure to issues beyond the confines of the curriculum. Aside from the offer of free entry, which stands for any of our talks this year, we are also open to running workshops for interested students in which they can talk to our committee about anything related to higher education. We believe this more informal and intimate setting would be more enlightening to your students than the often generalised nature of an open day. Our committee is made up of a mixture of first, second, and third years, and comprises students studying a range of subjects including Politics and International Relations, Economics, History, and Maths, so we believe we are well-equipped to answer any questions.

Free tickets are now available to book for the Royal Institution’s Christmas Lecture Series, which will be streamed live at the University of South Wales.
USW is one of 20 venues across the UK which will be streaming the lectures live from the RI in London. The lectures will also be broadcast on BBC Four between Christmas and New Year. ‘Secrets and lies: The Hidden Power of Maths’ In these lectures, mathematician and TV presenter Dr Hannah Fry will unmask the hidden numbers, rules and patterns that secretly influence our daily lives…in ways we could never imagine. She exposes how our gut instincts are often unreliable, while an unseen layer of maths drives everyday life in powerful and surprising ways. Life’s most astonishing miracles can be understood with probability. Big data dictates many of the hot new fashions we follow. Even our choice of what we watch on TV, or our choice of who we marry, is secretly influenced by computer algorithms. In a series of lectures packed with mind-boggling demos and live experiments, Hannah shows us how to decode life’s hidden numbers; to help us all make better choices, sort fact from fiction, and lead happier lives. But she also warns how our unwavering faith in figures can lead to disaster when we get the sums wrong. Click links below to book your tickets: Lecture One

Environment and Land Avon Wildlife Trust Looking for students who are interested in their local wildlife and environmental issues and who may wish to pursue a career in the conservation sector. Some of the things you might get involved in on placement: • Induction and introduction to the office (your colleagues for the placement and what they do) • Walk and talk around an area such as Brandon Hill reserve • You’ll have a project to complete over the course of the week, and you will be working with a mixture of other young people on work experience at the same time. Projects vary according to the time of year.
