Weston College Traineeship opportunities A Traineeship is a Pre-Apprenticeship programme designed to support learners into either an Apprenticeship or full time work. The course focusses on work skills, employability, extra-curricular support, independent skills, ICT, English and maths. The course is comprised of three days in College followed by two in work placement over twelve weeks. For the final month of the programme you will be able to increase your hours to three or more days.

When the course finishes you will receive an interview with your placement provider and support from the Traineeships team to facilitate your next steps. Many students move from their Traineeship directly into an Apprenticeship! Our next Traineeship programme will be based around childcare and will begin on September 4th.

How to Succeed in Your EPQ : a FREE online course from the University of Bath The University is offering a free online course aimed at Year 12 and 13 students interested in taking the Extended Project Qualification. 'How to succeed in your EPQ' will help your students to decide whether an EPQ is right for them, and has lots of advice on how to successfully complete their EPQ and to use it to strengthen their university application. This course involves around three hours of study per week for three weeks, and learners can complete the course at their own pace and at a time to suit them. We will be offering the course on an ongoing basis, and students can sign up now for courses starting on: Monday 19 June 2017 Monday 17 July 2017 Monday 14 August 2017 At the University of Bath we value the EPQ as providing excellent preparation for university study, and for the majority of our courses we make a reduced alternative offer to students undertaking the EPQ. The day will also allow the students a rare opportunity to visit and take part in a variety of activities in our brand new skills labs. These are: Operating Theatre Experience - Delve beyond the closed doors of the operating suite. Experience how Operating Department Practitioners work directly with anesthetists and surgeons. Ageing Experience : A simulation experience - The students will be able to experience age-related impairments to help them understand the sensory changes older adults may experience. What is PS Bath? A Free local drop in surgery for students to bring a draft personal statement to university staff for guidance. Who is offering PS Bath? Specialist admissions and outreach staff from University of Bath will offer one to one guidance to students. Bath student ambassadors will also be there as stewards and will be happy to talk about student life. At the September sessions there is also a CareerPilot staff to help students access http://www.careerpilot.org.uk/ to support you in making your post 16 choices. All guidance is impartial and we will help all students applying to HE wherever they apply. What about early applicants? Early deadline students, and other early applicants are encouraged to attend the first two September PS Bath sessions at the new Virgil Building in Manvers Street. If you ….. haven’t applied yet! Applying after the 15 January deadline Universities will consider you if they still have places left. It is advisable to phone any universities you are considering prior to submitting an application to find out whether they are likely to consider you. If you ….. haven’t any offers! Extra opens - 25 February Extra is a way of making a further choice after making an application. Applicants who have used all five choices and do not hold offers, for whatever reason, will be eligible to start using Extra from 25 February If you …didn’t originally use all five choices You can add a choice/ choices to your application (but follow the steps advised above for applying after the 15 January deadline). Also, bear in mind, you cannot swap university choices once you have submitted them to UCAS, so be sure!

Students do not need a confirmed place at university to apply and are strongly advised to apply as soon as possible- this will allow time to provide any supporting documentation needed for Student Finance England to approve your funds and ensure that they are in place for the start of your course. Volunteering Opportunity - Friends of the Royal University Hospital

Students play a valuable role in the hospital. They work on the wards for one afternoon per week either 2.30pm-4pm or mornings 9.30-11.30am, serving teas and coffees to patients, and providing a listening ear. They are not involved with any of the medical care, but will provide a really valuable, sympathetic service to patients and staff. This is a great way to improve communication and listening skills. It is also a valuable addition to a C.V, and gives real experience to those considering a career in the medical profession. There is often a waiting list for students and clearance takes a minimum of three weeks. Unfortunately, due to insurance we are unable to take on volunteers under 16 years old. As we provide training support and DBS clearance we can only take on students and volunteers who can commit to a minimum of 6 months volunteering for a minimum of once a week for 2 hours.

Summer Reading Champions Bristol libraries have a number of volunteering opportunities to assist with their summer reading champions scheme.
