I hope you enjoyed the sunshine on the bank holiday. It's really taken me by surprise (sun and BH) and I had to dust off the hammock for the first time this year! The Career and Jobs Hub with Proud to Care in the Galleries will be launched this week! It will be open from 10am to 2pm every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with recruiters from different health and care organisations staffing the shop as well as DWP colleagues. If you have any customers who want to know more about careers in this sector, pop down for a visit! We are also excited to be working on the Future Bright programme. This is a programme working with residents in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset who receive in-work benefits and are 19 or over. Early Years and Childcare Recruitment Fair Bridgwater and Taunton College and representatives from DWP and colleagues in early years are hosting a fair to inspire those interested in working in the childcare sector. The event will serve as a recruitment platform for preschool/nursery operators, as well as informing interested job seekers on career opportunities and training support available in the sector.
The target audience is as follows:
School pupils – Years 10/11 interested in pursuing a career in the early years sector and gaining early years qualifications/or becoming early years apprentices.
Post 16 and Post 19 - Apprentices that have just finished their training and are looking for work
Anyone with an interest in working in early years including those 19+ unemployed and those who would like to return to the work There will also be Early Years Providers at the event showcasing good practice and putting on fun activities for children. It will be an excellent opportunity for students to meet possible future employers face to face and be able to ask questions. There will also be talks about becoming a self-employed Child-minder.

Geography Experience Day Wednesday 20 June 2018 We would like to invite you to the UWE Bristol Geography Experience Day on Wednesday 20 June 2018. The aim of the day is to enhance the learning of A-level Geography students and give you an insight into studying geography at degree level. Academics from the Department of Geography will deliver workshops, last year’s topics included:· Global Governance Dr Andy Tallon discussed how cities are now governed and managed by their authorities to enhance economic development, rather than to provide public services. He used case studies ranging from Bristol to Beijing to illustrate this change in governance globally.· Mapping flood risk using ArcGIS Online ArcGIS is freely available to all schools and colleges. In a hands-on session, Michael Horswell showed students how to use this tool to identify issues associated with flooding.· Global challenges relating to water, by Professor Chad Staddon Through a range of case studies, Professor Chad Staddon explored the issues associated with water at a global scale.In addition, we can offer you, as accompanying staff, a CPD Workshop. We'll share learning resources and case studies to support your teaching of the new A-level Geography topics.

Year 12 ‘Personal Statements – Enhancing your profile’ Evening, Wednesday 6th June 2018
We would like to invite you to a ‘Personal Statements – Enhancing your profile’ evening at the University of Southampton. This event is designed to provide an introduction and guidance on how to structure the personal statement and advice on what Admissions Tutors are looking for from applicants. We also talk about ways to enhance a student’s understanding of their subject and offer other tips for writing a persuasive statement. The event will be predominately aimed at Year 12 students considering applying to Higher Education, however parents/guardians are also welcome to attend.
The Personal Statement is a section of your UCAS application that universities use to check that you are suitable for your chosen course. This makes it one of the most important documents you will be writing at this stage of your academic career. This event is a fantastic opportunity for prospective students, and their parents, to enhance and develop your profiles. We will be offering expert information, advice and guidance to support you with your UCAS application, including a Personal Statement talk, followed by a number of carousel sessions. These cover the all-important academic reading skills that will help strengthen the academic content of your Personal Statement, highlight the importance of your digital profile and demonstrate how accessing both work experience and academic research bodies can further improve your application.

Computer Science and Creative Technologies Workshops Wednesday 6 June 2018 The Computer Science and Creative Technologies department at the University of the West of England will be running a series of workshops aimed at year 12 students/1st year BTEC students on Wednesday 6th June 2018 between 9:45am and 2:45pm. The aim of these workshops is to provide an introduction to a range of computing topics which can be studied further at A Level, BTEC and at Degree level. Students will be able to attend 2 “hands on” workshops on the day: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. UWE Law Taster Day Wednesday 6 June 2018 Through informative and interactive sessions hosted in our new state-of-the-art building, the UWE 'Law Taster Day' offers students studying AS/A Levels or BETECs a chance to consider and explore the study and practice of law. The sessions are challenging but fun, and aim to support the students in developing their legal knowledge and skills such as communication and presentation, reasoned argumentation, creativity, innovation, decision-making and confidence. Students will also have the opportunity to interact with current UWE law students to find out first-hand about studying law and university life. Thus, participation at this event not only provides useful experience for UCAS applications but also give your students insight into life as a HE student.

National Apprenticeship Awards 2018 The National Apprenticeship Awards, now in their fifteenth year, showcase the diverse range of sectors engaged with apprenticeships and celebrate outstanding apprentices, employers and those individuals who go above and beyond to champion apprenticeships.
Hosted by the National Apprenticeship Service, the awards recognise excellence in businesses that grow their own talent with apprenticeships, and apprentices who have made a significant contribution to their workplaces. They provide businesses and individuals with a platform to showcase how apprenticeships have made a real difference to their organisation and their careers.
The 2018 awards are now open for entries until 25 May.
Free to attend information webinars will also be held to help young people to write their winning entry.
The Year in Industry (YINI) The Year in Industry (YINI) programme offers students the opportunity to gain professional development by working at a reputable company.
We help place students in top UK companies every year, including Shell, Rolls-Royce, EDF, Network Rail and GKN. Typically, the programme lasts for 12 months and is a paid placement. We have placements for students interested in all areas of engineering, science, IT, e-commerce, business, marketing, finance and logistics. Our placements offer students the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for. Around a quarter of all our students are sponsored through university each year and many of our 300 partner companies see The Year in Industry as an important part of their graduate recruitment programme. EPQ Mentoring Fair for Sixth Form Students Wednesday 14th November, 1.30-3.00pm Wills Memorial Building, University of Bristol Save the date! The EPQ Mentoring Fair returns for 2018. For students completing the EPQ, this Mentoring Fair provides you with the opportunity to meet and discuss your project with a researcher in the University working in a similar area to your project. Small groups of students will be allocated to one researcher who will give advice on research skills, analysing results, report writing and other subject-specific support.

Quantum in the Summer – Summer School Monday 6th - Friday 10th August 2018 University of Bristol The Centre for Quantum Photonics are giving students age 16+ the opportunity to spend a week at the University, getting an insight into the use of light in photonics, spanning optics and quantum computing. The summer school is aimed at students with a keen interest in physics and engineering who would like to tackle material beyond the curriculum. North Bristol Trust NHS Research Foundation Vacation Research Scholarship Guidance for applicants Aim The aim of the North Bristol NHS Trust Research Vacation Scholarship is to provide promising students with hands-on experience of research at NBT, with the aim of encouraging the applicant to consider a career in research.
Awards The scholarships will be for a minimum of four and a maximum of 6 weeks in July/August 2018. A stipend of £50 per week for up to 6 weeks plus research costs as defined by the NBT research team. The internship will be based within an existing NBT research unit/team.
Eligibility Applicants must be at school or further education college within the UK or Republic of Ireland and should be an A Level Student
Application process An application form should be completed and submitted to the Research Foundation Secretary – Karen.evely@nbt.nhs.uk by Friday 18th May 2018
Submissions must also include a supporting statement/recommendation from the student’s current tutor. The Trust does not assist in the organisation of project placements; applicants should contact prospective supervisors at North Bristol NHS Trust themselves. Applications will be assessed according to criteria that focus on the candidate’s academic record and preference will be given to students with no previous research experience. Students and supervisors must comply with the NBT Work Experience and Work Based Learning Activities Policy.

FIND OUT ABOUT SUMMER VOLUNTEERING Volunteering in your local library is a fantastic way to keep busy over the summer. You’ll have the opportunity to gain new skills and work experience for your CV, and you’ll have fun helping children to read more at the same time. OKAY… WHAT EXACTLY IS THE SUMMER READING CHALLENGE? The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six books during the long summer holiday. WHAT WILL I BE DOING AS A VOLUNTEER? There are loads of different ways to help with the Challenge. Some of the things volunteers do include:
Helping staff to run the Challenge Talking to children about the books they’ve been reading Creating exciting library displays Planning and running activities or craft sessions Planning and running celebration events for other volunteers
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? The Summer Reading Challenge runs in most libraries, so just drop in to the one you want to volunteer in and ask if they have any opportunities for you to get involved this summer. Libraries start to recruit for the challenge from March, but some may have opportunities year round. Join the Summer Volunteering 2018 hack to record your skills and volunteering hours and share what you’re doing with other young people across the UK.

Gloucestershire Rugby Football Union [GRFU] is seeking an outgoing and personable individual to take on the voluntary role of Volunteers Sector Head. The aim of this Sector is to encourage club members to support their clubs in the management and administration of the club; coaching of teams, organisation of matches, events, clubhouse and grounds etc. The role would suit someone who is outgoing, has contacts with people who have an interest in sport generally but, in particular, an interest in rugby. The Sector Head will build and work with a committee, to ensure there is a support network for the Club Volunteer Co-ordinators [CVCs]. It is the responsibility of the CVCs to make sure that all areas of club management are covered so that it is not just down to a select few to do all the work. This role is likely to involve 6-8 hours per week and full support will be given to enable the successful applicant to become fully conversant with GRFU. As a Sector Head of GRFU you will sit on the Game Board and the Management Board, which meet according to the meeting schedule set out at the beginning of each season. Key elements of the role are: Organise regular meetings with Club Volunteer Co-ordinators [CVCs] to provide them with updates and new initiatives Offer advice and guidance for Club Volunteers throughout the CB Maintain strong links between the GRFU, CBVCs and CVCs Encourage Clubs to be forthcoming with projects and request Volunteer support Inspire Clubs to be forthcoming with news and achievements for inclusion on the GRFU website, GRFU News and RFU Touchline To develop stronger links with FE and HE providers To help promote Gloucestershire’s Young Rugby Ambassadors Regularly liaise with other GRFU Sector Heads to share best practice and expand events To encourage the RFU ethos of ‘Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship' Applications should take the form of a comprehensive CV and a letter of intent, sent to the Chairman of the Appointments Panel, Jeff Tyler at jsdtyler@hotmail.com Please contact Jeff by email with any questions prior to application if required.
