Arrival and refreshments Welcome (Dr Melita Lazell, Senior Lecturer in Political Economy and Admissions Tutor) Aid in the age of austerity: should the UK government be giving to poor Countries? In this age of austerity international development aid remains a 'ring-fenced' area of government spending, leading to increased public and media scrutiny of UK aid. The public debate on this issue has included whether the UK should give aid to what the Daily Mail dubbed the ‘Ethiopian Spice Girls’ or indeed to India, a 'rising power' with a space programme. In this session we get behind what really motivates the government to continue giving aid and discuss whether you think it is a justified use of tax payer’s money.

Utopian futures both past and present: from Edmund Burke’s unborn, to the Walking Dead’s undead. Stressed about the here and now? Then worry about tomorrow instead! Since antiquity, Political Thought has been concerned with imagining how we might improve our political societies. In so doing it has imagined alternative futures - both utopian and dystopian - as a way of prompting us to reflect critically on our present, and animate political action here and now, either to create the perfect society or forestall catastrophe. This session will introduce you to the promise of utopian thinking and how it might all just go horribly wrong. Break
