Jobs & Apprenticeships
Legal apprenticeship vacancies The Chambers Student law careers guide has just compiled a brand-new listing of legal apprenticeships for school-leavers. We've also interviewed apprentices and recruiters to publish an insight feature on being a legal apprentice. You can find a link to both these features below, plus other content from Chambers Student which is useful to you as a careers advisor and to any sixthform students considering a career in law. Legal apprenticeships For school-leavers who fancy learning on the job and getting paid to do it, a law apprenticeship might be the ideal route into law – and you won't even need to impress Lord Sugar.
More from Chambers Student‌ What kind of lawyer do you want to be? Let's start with one of the most basic questions – what do lawyers do? Is law right for you? And do you want to be a barrister or a solicitor? How do you become a solicitor? Solicitors provide legal services directly to clients who may be individuals, companies or other bodies. There are over 5000 vacancies for graduate jobs as a solicitor. How do you become a barrister?
Do you enjoy debating and public speaking? Are you a good debater? Are you well-organised and a good independent worker? Then a career as a barrister could be for you.
FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Creative Youth Network's fortnightly job club is on Wednesday 5th September. Options? Where next will be held in the Galleries on 5th September with information on all options for young people getting their exam results.

Optical Apprenticeships: lead to Optical Assistants - There are now a number of routes that can be taken as below 1. In house training that can lead to what we call Cert 3 followed by Cert 4. Cert 4 is recognised by Association British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) which is a 3 year degree course. Therefore if someone applies to ABDO and are Cert 4 it is only a 2 year distance learning course completed in the practice whilst working under supervision of one of the employed Opticians. This is usually sponsored by the business. Once qualified as a Dispensing Optician the individual can do another year to become a Contact Lens Optician (CLO). This again is under supervision in the practice and is sponsored by the business. 2. Once Cert 3 qualified learners can look to develop their skills into store/business management. 3. We also provide hearing services so again a distance learning course can be completed in the practice, under supervision, to become a qualified Healthcare Assistant (HCA) enabling them to conduct Hearing tests. Then they can progress for a further two years to become a qualified Hearing Aid Dispenser. (HAD) 4. Next we have an on site glazing laboratory in most stores. This is where we glaze your lenses into your glasses. This is another option and there is another two year distance learning degree that can be accomplished here called SMC (Tech) 5. If you have the will, the drive and ambition all of the above could lead to you owning your very own Specsavers store as a Joint Venture Partner. Again this training is all done in house.
All that I have listed is what can be achieved within the store/practice. Obviously you can also go to University for a 3 year Optometry course to become a fully qualified Ophthalmic Optician. These are the professionals who conduct your eye examinations. Once you have completed your 3 year degree you then have to complete a pre registration year under supervision in a store/practice. This course is available from September at the UWE.
Further details will be published after October 2018. keep
