Media, Communication and Sociology Taster Day Wednesday, 13th February 2019—12.30 – 14.45 University of Leicester, Ken Edwards building (main campus) Who is it for? This is the perfect opportunity for any year 12 students that are considering university study in Journalism, Media or Sociology or that just have a general interest in the social sciences. We have an exciting line-up of taster lectures and a practical media production session confirmed. Please see below for a full programme of sessions confirmed so far: 12.30 Staff and students arrive 13.00 Welcome – Professor Jason Hughes Students will have a choice of either 2 academic lectures or to take part in a practical media session. Students can use their own web 2.0 equipment such as phones or tablets. They can also make use of photographic equipment that will be provided. Students will then submit their six word stories. They will be uploaded and shown with a short discussion about the process and what they have produced.

EXCITING NEW PROGRAMMES FOR YEAR 12 STUDENTS Pathway to Bath – online curriculum enhancement programme This exciting new programme is completely free and only available to students who meet one of our Widening Participation criteria. We offer it for A level students in Science (Biology, Physics or Chemistry) and Languages (French, German or Spanish) as well as for BTEC Level 3 students in Engineering, IT and Sports and Exercise Science. The programme will run from February to December and guides students through their very own research project through online sessions. The A level programme includes a residential on campus in the summer. Students benefit from 

Two online sessions a month guiding them through the research project and teaching essential skills such as online research, evaluating sources and academic writing.

Continued access to their own e-mentor, a current undergraduate in their subject.

Discover Bath Residentials An opportunity for Year 12 students to experience first year study at Bath: staying on campus, carrying out a project with academic staff and students. They are more than just a summer school as they include: 

Pre-residential online modules which will mimic University style learning where they will develop their subject knowledge

A four-day stay on campus where students will get to take part in a set of first year undergraduate lectures, workshops and projects such as laboratory experiments, plus a range of free time activities.

After their stay, students will have the opportunity, with support from current undergraduates, to write up a report which will be marked to a first year undergraduate standard. If students meet the University's widening participation criteria and achieve a B/2:1 in their report, they will be eligible for an alternative offer at the University of Bath.

1:1 support with personal statements, UCAS applications and a successful transition to University.

LIFE SCIENCE TASTER DAYS The days are designed to give sixth-form students a taste of undergraduate teaching as well as some laboratory practical experience, with a variety of sessions from each of the five subject areas; Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, Experimental Psychology & Biological Sciences.

PARTICLE PHYSICS MASTERCLASS Sixth-form students with a keen interest in physics are welcome to join us for our annual Masterclass workshop. Students will interact with our knowledgeable scientists by running computer simulations, designing detectors and testing their general particle physics knowledge

School of Humanities Writing Wrongs Y12 Project 2019

The School of Humanities is running an exciting writing and research programme for local year 12 students interested in studying an essay-based subject at university. Through a combination of engaging workshops and individual feedback from academics, professional writers and current students, pupils will be supported to create their own piece of writing on a social issue that they are passionate about. All participants receive extensive individual feedback from our writing team and experience a taste of university life as well as career advice from a range of professional writers. The year 12 programme comprises three on-campus workshops on the following dates: 

YOUNG RANGERS: FREE TRAINING FOR 16-25 YEAR OLDS

The project aims to support Friends of Parks groups across Bristol to engage with more young people to protect and enhance their local park whilst helping 11-25 year olds grow their skills and confidence. Young Rangers We are currently recruiting for a team of Young Rangers (16-25) who will gain bespoke training, mentoring and one-to-one support to create their own projects in their local park. The programme will run fortnightly between February-April and is free. Join an adventurous team of 16-25 year olds to will work in partnership with your local Friends of Park group to create projects to protect your park for future generations. We will train, mentor and support you to grow your confidence and skills in conservation, woodcraft, foraging, first aid, campaigning, mentoring, vlogging and more. This volunteer programme is free - please complete this form to join the programme or email amy.walsh@groundwork.org.uk for more information. Troopers Hill Young Rangers Join an adventurous team of 16-25 year olds to grow your skills and confidence whilst protecting Troopers Hill for future generations. Young Rangers will work with Friends of Troopers Hill to create projects to protect the park for future generations. We will train, mentor and support you to grow your confidence and skills in conservation, woodcraft, foraging, first aid, campaigning, mentoring, video making and more.

Nuffield Research Placements For Yr 12 STEM students (Summer holiday placement 2019) A fantastic opportunity to work alongside a researcher in either a university or an industry setting. The aim of the scheme is to give students a hands-on experience of research in action, providing them with information about what a career in STEM might be like. What will I be doing? Students will carry out their own mini research project, write up a scientific report and design a poster about their findings which they present at the Celebration Event after the end of the placements. Students are supported to develop the skills needed for these activities (academic writing, communication, independent and team working and the soft skills around work such as time management and organisation) by their project mentor and by the regional Nuffield Research Placements Coordinator and team. When is it? For 4-6 weeks full time over the school/college summer holidays. Exact dates and location will depend on your placement. What’s in it for me? The experience is a great to put on any CV or UCAS form and will make you stand out as a serious contender in any application. How do I apply? School & College Insight Week 2019– Summer Placements in Business and Finance for Year 12 Students Announcing We’re proud to be launching our School & College Insight Week programmes for 2019, a week-long paid summer placements for Year 12 students (first year of A-Levels or equivalent). Aim The aim is to give young people an opportunity to gain access to professional services, develop their employability skills and discover more about their career opportunities with PwC. The Offer In the West & Wales region, we are offering a Business Insight Week in the Bristol office. More details and the application form can be found here. Our Insight Weeks: What do you need to know?  Running in summer 2019, with around 400 places across the UK, each student will be fully supported during the week and will gain an insight into life at PwC  They’ll complete a full induction and spend time with employees to experience first-hand what life at PwC is all about  After the week is complete, successful students will have the opportunity to be fast-tracked to the final stage of the recruitment process for our full-time Apprenticeship programmes

VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

At hop, skip and jump we provide flexible and wrap around care for children and young adults with additional needs. Our Bristol centre has a large area to explore with a wide range of areas including a dark sensory room, a white sensory room, soft play / ball pit area, a music room, a games room and an art room. We also have a fully working kitchen and a massive outdoor space equipped with climbing frames, swings, slides for all ages and abilities and a lovely sensory area. We provide a range of different sessions throughout the year which include: Respite sessions: These sessions run every Saturday and during the school holidays (except Tuesday and Thursday mornings), for children and young adults with additional needs and challenging behaviours. Stay and play sessions: These sessions run every Saturday and during the school holidays (except Tuesday and Thursday mornings) where the service user can come with either their families or carers to use the centre independently. The service user is in full care of their family or carer. After school club sessions: These sessions are currently run on Wednesday and Friday evenings 3:30- 6:00, offering children and young adults with additional needs and challenging behaviour a safe environment to build social skills and engage in fun activities.
