Welcome to Careers News! Having left our general opportunities in this newsletter for a one week, we have now moved them into the longer version on the St Brendan’s Careers web page.

As many education and employment providers are adjusting to the ‘new normal’, we will again be using the ‘New This Week’ booklet for career development items that really are ‘New’ this week.

Careers appointments Careers Appointments are now bookable through MS Bookings. Students have the choice between face to face and Teams appointments for either careers or work experience. They can book 15 minute course change appointments during the course change period. (14th—25th Sept 2020) This is the link to the booking page Careers Appointments which is also available on the Career Zone Moodle Page

Students will also be able to access the link through a QR code (above) on careers posters and on Moodle. Dates Wednesday 21st October from 12:00 - 18:00 UK University and Apprenticeship search fair. This is a virtual event and open to students in all years.

Business Academy

For those in Year 12, we offer a week of work experience so you can get to know more about EY and your future Apprenticeship options, if you chose to join us.  The week will run in July 2021 and there's even an opportunity to secure an Apprenticeship place for 2022 if you take part. This year the UK University and Apprenticeship will take place virtually on Wednesday 21st October from 12:00 - 18:00.

The fair is designed to allow you to explore national, local and regional post-18 options safely. You will be able to chat directly to a very wide range of universities, as well as apprenticeship providers and local colleges. The fair will feature 10 live webinars on a variety of topics including UCAS Personal Statement and Degree Apprenticeships. The event is free to attend, and open to students in all years. You will need to register yourself to attend the event by filling in registration form on the virtual event page here. If activities clash with your lessons we will update class registers accordingly so that this does not affect your attendance, but please also let your teacher know. You will be expected to catch up on missed work.

Higher Education If you are considering Bristol University as one of your choices for University read on. Bristol Scholars is a widening participation scheme, which, if you meet the entry requirements and are eligible will give you a tailored offer (up to 4 grades below the standard offer)

for Bristol University and the possibility of a bursary and fee waiver. This is a video link which explains the scheme Bristol Scholars The tailored offer is designed to reflect the fact that your predicted results, or performance in Year 12, may not reflect your true academic ability. If you want to be nominated by the college we will need to submit a short statement as to why your predicted or attained grades do not reflect your true ability, or how you may have experienced disadvantage and therefore be eligible for additional support. This could be as a result of: disrupted education due to a period of ill health; recent arrival to the country; family difficulties; challenges with peer groups or any other circumstance that could have impacted on your performance. Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science nominations must be submitted by 30 September 2020 ahead of the UCAS deadline of 15 October 2020. For students applying for all other programmes, nominations should be submitted by 11 December 2020 Please email careers to discuss in confidence if you think you may be eligible.

Don't miss out on the second West of England Virtual Jobs Fair this week on 8th September, 11am to 12:30pm. Search on Twitter and Facebook for #WestOfEnglandJobsFair The Government's Kickstart scheme is getting up and running now with employers able to apply for funding. See details here. Jobseekers can find out more about eligibility and how to apply on the DWP's jobhelp site, though jobs won't be available until around November. Post 16 provision across the city is open and awaiting your arrival to enrol on courses and programmes.

If you are feeling unsure about your next steps and have not yet enrolled (confirmed your place with your chosen college, sixth form or Post 16 provider) please make direct contact with them and they will guide you through next steps. This can be done through calling them or through checking their website.
