Making a Personal Statement stand out
Hopefully you are settling in to the new academic year and are starting to think about their UCAS applications. We understand that more so than ever, this can be a daunting process for you. To help with writing a personal statement, we have put together a virtual workshop to share our top tips.
Top tips to get started:
Understand the subject
Keep up to date
We want you to understand where you subjects fits in the wider world. Follow legal news or legal podcasts to show you know what is impacting the sector. Why not attend one of our Twilight Lectures that aim to answer real world questions, on topics such as legal tech, policing protests, and the fair-
Know exactly what you will study. Check course pages to see what modules you will cover and show the knowledge you already have in your Statement. If you have gaps, go out and learn more about it beyond the classroom. Complete our NEW Futurelearn course on 'How to become a Lawyer' to develop knowledge.
Make it academic
Speak to the university
Academic language is a must. Showing academic skills is more important than ever. Use Google Scholar to engage with academic reading. Show how research, referencing, and presentation skills have been developed over time using relevant examples of your own work.
Keep it relevant
80% of a Personal Statement should be about the course. If it doesn't demonstrate passion or suitability for the course, it shouldn't be included. Only talk about extra-curricular activities relevant to the subject, or focus on the transferable skills you have gained.
Attending free university events can give great insight into a course - even if they are virtual. Ask University staff what they are looking to see in the Personal Statement. Tell us about taster sessions you've taken part in & the new skills and interests you have developed. Be specific.
Don't start at the start
The hardest part of the Personal Statement is the beginning, so leave it till the end. Consider shocking statistics, academic readings, or unusual quotes that are personal to your developed interests in the subject as something to include in the opening statement.
Still time to submit an essay entry
The Real World Question Essay competition closes on 13th October, so there is still time to submit an entry to win ÂŁ1000 cash and a one week work experience placement with either Clyde & Co or the Co-op. There are a variety of resources to help you get started with the topics.
