Jobs and Apprenticeships SPOTLIGHT ON: TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS—RAIL

This week, we are shining the spotlight on careers on Transport & Logistics, with a special focus on the rail sector. Railways have been part of British life for 200 years, and today, the UK is home to over 10,000 miles of track. Rail journeys have doubled over the last 20 years and continue to rise, which means an extra 100,000 rail jobs will be created over the next decade. Today’s newsletter is your ticket to a career in rail—read on for all the key info, an click the links to learn more on the Success at School site.

Complete the worksheet to consolidate your learning Once you have read the email, please complete the worksheet to apply what you’ve learnt to your own future career path.

What’s rail all about? Railways transport people and goods all over the country—and even between mainland Europe and the UK thanks to the Channel Tunnel. But careers in the rail sector aren’t just about driving trains— engineers look after the thousands of miles of track, while customer service teams work as conductors on trains and keep stations running.

Then there is all the work that goes into upgrading and building new lines, plus the bridges and other features that haveto be built to accommodate the network. And of course, rail employers need the marketing teams, IT, HR and finance staff, project managers, and all the other supporting roles that every business needs to keep things ticking over. What jobs are out there? 

Architecture: Architects design stations, tunnels, bridges and other features on the rail network. They work with engineers to make sure the designs are safe, cost-effective and ecofriendly.

Engineering: Engineers design, upgrade and maintain lines and ‘infrastructure’ such as platfomrs, stations and bridges along the railway. Electrical, mechanical, civil and software engineers all work in rail.

Art and marketing: Come up with memorable artwork and ad campaigns to promote rail operators and other organisations such as Network Rail and Transport for London.

Interior Design: Design the furnishings such as seat covers inside trains, as well as within buildings on the network, like stations.

Software development: Software is used to keep track (sorry, couldn’t resist) of trains running on the network, and keep travellers and staff updated.

Customer Service: Ticket inspectors, conductors and train managers, platform staff and ticket office staff all make up the customer service teams

Archaeology: Building new railways means digging up a lot of earth —oftern uncovering forgotten historical artefacts below the ground.

Environment: Make sure rail projects have as minimal an impact as possible on wildlife and the natural environment. Environmental crews even relocate animals and plant trees if needs be.

Construction: Construction workers lay new track, build new infrastructure, and upgrade and repair old lines, facilities and equipment, and buildings.

Maintenance: Maintenance engineers make sure the track and infrastructure is working reliable and safely, and fix any problems.

Who will I work for? Employers include Network Rail, who own and manage the track, and the rail operators who run train services on the line. Then there are companies set up to handle specific projects, such as Crossrail and High Speed 2, and organisations like Transport for London, which run particular networks like the London Underground. On top of this, there are numerous contractors who carry out particular projects, like design engineering or software consultancy. Am I cut out for it? The honest answer is: probably! As you can see from the list above, there are so many different jobs in the sector that there’s something for everyone. Here are some general benefits a career in rail can offer: 

UK Travel: Engineers, architects, environment crews, train drivers and on -board staff travel regionally and nationally. There are many opportunities for others to travel around the country meeting clients and colleagues.

World Travel! Depending on your role, there are opportunities to visit other sites across the world to visit manufacturing sites, learn new skills and secure new contracts with suppliers.

Job Security: Jobs are being created all the time, and 100,000 new vacancies are expected over the next decade.

Make a difference: Whether we travel by train or not, we all rely on railways to transport our goods around the country.

Is a career in rail future proof? Yes! High-tech tools are being developed all the time to make trains more autonomous. Software is also the bread and butter of websites and apps like the Train Line and National Rail Enquires. We are in a new era of railway expansion, with thousands of people working on High Speed 2, which will connect London to the Midlands and later the North and Scotland. Then of course there’s Crossrail. And people are already talking about Crossrail 2 and High Speed 3!

How do I get there? Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are available at the intermediate and advanced level. To begin an intermediate apprenticeship you’ll need 5 GCSEs, to start an advanced apprenticeships, 2 A-levels: With a rail engineering track apprenticeship, you;ll train to work on the track and other parts of the line, fixing signals, and maintaining the train tracks. With a rail services apprenticeship, you could specialise in customer service, moving trains from one place to another (‘shunting’), signal operations or control room operation.

A rail service apprenticeships is for you if you’d like to become a train driver, train manager or conductor. Find out more about rail apprenticeships on this page

Jobs and Apprenticeships

My name is Matthew Horler. I work for Buro Happold, an engineering company in Bath, but grew up in Midsomer Norton and left Norton Hill School around 15 years ago. Since then I have developed a career through an electrical apprenticeship, moving into a work place part time degree in engineering. I am a huge advocate for work place learning, given the experience and support I have gained over the years. I would like to take the opportunity to promote the new apprenticeship degree scheme that Buro Happold have to offer. I am a practicing engineer and given that this is often a role for HR to promote the apprenticeship, I have a huge passion for this route of education and really want to generate awareness of this route as an alternative to full time degrees. The offer is in line with the government apprenticeship scheme and is a superb opportunity for students to gain a degree in engineering whilst being supported financially along with a great knowledge base and network within the workplace. The link below is for the advertisement published to the government website and you can also visit our company website to see more about us. As the advert states, we employ around 600 engineering staff however we have in excess of 1500 employees worldwide that include roles like specialist consulting and business support. We are considered as one of the leading companies in our field and it is truly a fantastic opportunity to be exposed to some of the projects that we work on, for example the new Tottenham Hotspur football stadium, which we designed structurally and all of the services within. I have to say, there are also so many opportunities such as worldwide travel, young engineering and social communities, networking, etc.

Work Experience Work Experienceand Volunteering and Volunteering Wessex Water’s Young People’s Panel We have an exciting work experience opportunity for sixth formers and Year 11 students to get involved in the running of one of the largest businesses in our region. This is the fifth year of our Young People’s Panel which brings the views of young adults into the decision-making we do to plan our future operations. We’re recruiting 26 individuals who live in the Wessex Water region to join our panel, which will allow their voices to be heard at executive level and provide a unique opportunity for them to kickstart a career in the world of business. We are looking for sixth formers from all social backgrounds: this really is an opportunity for anyone who is interested. We’re hoping that you will encourage pupils to apply who might otherwise think something like this is ‘not for me’. How will your sixth formers benefit? They will have real influence on the decisions made by senior management as well as: • see inside the workings of a major business • meet other like-minded sixth formers from around the region • get a formal reference for use in UCAS or apprenticeship applications • get a £100 reward for taking part. What’s involved? The Young People’s Panel will meet on two occasions, Wednesday 16th September and Tuesday 3rd November. We are hoping that the meetings will be able to take place at Wessex Water’s headquarters in Bath under social distancing guidelines. However, should that not be possible we will arrange virtual meetings. The meetings will start at 10am and finish at approximately 4pm. We will reimburse individuals for all travel expenses. The meetings will include a mix of briefings from senior executives about the business and the challenges it faces and facilitated problem-solving exercises. Between the two meetings, members of the panel will work in teams on a main task. On the second day they will present to a senior board of judges. Who should apply? We would expect sixth formers to be one or more of the following:  hinking about a career in a business setting; perhaps as an engineer, a product developer, in a financial, a

customer service or marketing role, or even would-be entrepreneurs who plan to run their own business one day.  Someone who enjoys getting their point across: taking an active part in class discussions and debates and

problem-solving.  A good team player: a good listener as well as a good talker!

How to apply We are contacting a limited number of schools and colleges in our region so would encourage you to publicise the initiative to your sixth-formers so they have the opportunity to get involved. The application form is quick and easy and should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. I have an exciting opportunity which may be of interest to some of your students. Trinity Hall will be hosting an online BME virtual Open Day at the end of the month and we would like to invite your BME students to attend. This is open to all so please share widely. Below is a message from the BME Officer at Trinity Hall who is organising the event: Hello, My name is Maro Okiti and I am the Black and Minority Ethnic officer from Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge. Prior to applying to Cambridge, I had several concerns ranging from the admissions process which seemed mystified to wondering how someone from my ethnic background would fit into the university. In retrospect, I acknowledge that whilst my fears were valid I should not have allowed it to discourage me. Being in my position now, I have realised that many students from underrepresented backgrounds are in a similar position to my younger self. In order to mitigate these concerns and demystify Cambridge from the perspective of an ethnic minority, I am launching Trinity Hall’s inaugural virtual BME Open Day Event on the 26th June, 2020. This student-led initiative is designed to give prospective students the opportunity to get a personal feel of Trinity Hall college and Cambridge University. The BME Open Day will feature a virtual college tour, a Q& A session with the Admissions office, subject-specific interview workshops and a student panel that sheds lights on the experiences of a few students.

Trinity Hall is dedicated to addressing the challenge of under-representation of BME students at Cambridge and this Open day is a reflection of our values. I would deeply appreciate it if your students can take this opportunity to virtually experience life at Cambridge and dispel some of the myths and fears that they may have. As the summer Open Day season fast approaches, we expect your thoughts are turning to how to help you (and their parents/ supporters) make the most of virtual events, in lieu of the faceto-face advice and guidance that we all work so hard to deliver throughout the year We’re conscious that Year 12 students in particular are missing out on UCAS events and a wealth of information sessions in school/college during this time, and as such, our next Open Day will include more of the presentations that we’d normally deliver when we visit you. We’ll be holding our Online Open Day on Saturday 20 June and as well as all the traditional content, we’re also working hard to include additional content for Year 13 students too. We’re also running bi-weekly drop-in sessions for students and have a selection of presentations on our website for them to view. If there are any questions that you are frequently being asked, or you have suggestions for other ways in which we can support your students and their parents/supporters, then please do get in touch as we would be happy to work with you in any way we can.

HIGHER EDUCATION International HE Advice & Support A this time of year students in Year 12 are typically presented with all sorts of options for their future. We appreciate that this cannot happen in the normal manner but we are commited to helping in whatever way we can. This newsletter gives a few suggestions. Many universities are understandably preoccupied with the start of the next academic year so all we can really tell you about going to university in 2021 is that, hopefully, it will be different from 2020. However, it will almost certainly be different from 2019 as well and our webinars are designed to try to give you and your students a sense of what to expect. If you are interested in studying… 

...then please make them aware of our forthcoming webinars (details below). You would also be welcome to sign up and attend!

We appreciate that you may not have decided on whether studying abroad is right for you and perhaps could benefit from more general advice. We have a limited number of slots available to UK and international schools who would like us to do deliver an online session on international education. We also introduce Prague College’s summer schools to you in this newsletter. If you are interested in web design, digital photography, painting and financial crime, this might be something for you to consider. Prague College Summer Schools While it might be difficult to go anywhere at the moment, Prague College in the Czech Republic has actually reopened for students. Not everyone can be done in person at this time and they have developed some really innovative online short programmes starting on 15th June. If you find yourself at a loose end and would like to start on a university-level module in the following subjects, we recommend that you check them out:  Financial Crime  Website Design & Development  Digital Photography  Studio Painting All of those programmes are suitable for beginners but Financial Crime does require some knowledge of business and/or economics. Please visit the Prague College Website for more information.

HIGHER EDUCATION International HE Advice & Support Studying in the Netherlands in 2021 and beyond Every year we get more enquiries for the Netherlands than any other country. We will run two webinars on studying there with University of Groningen in the next two weeks. This will give you the information you need to decide whether Dutch higher education is right for you. The University of Groningen is one of the top 100 universities in the world and they currently have around 35 Bachelor’s degrees offered in English, everything from art history to artificial intelligence. Naomi Eustace, the coordinator for UK applications will be speaking in both webinars and will be more than happy to answer your questions about studying in the Netherlands in general and about Groningen in Study in the USA—Sensible, affordable options in these changing times. If you are interested in learning about the Ivy League and sporting scholarships this is not the Study in the USA webinar for you. If you are interested in learning about how accessible US higher education can be, even for the highest quality universities, then join us to learn from Jelle Draper, the European Representative of Green River College. In this webinar we will discuss the online alternatives that many US universities will introduce in 2020 as well as Gap Year and transform programmes that can see you experience US higher education for some or all of your degree. Green River College is a pioneer in transfer programmes both within the USA and Europe. If you would like to learn more about these highly cost-effective initiatives, sign up to learn more next week. The webinar takes place on Wednesday 17th June at 15.00 UK time and you can sign up here to take part.

Universidad Europea Madrid

Studying Dentistry in Spain It is fair to say that studying dentistry abroad might not be anyone’s first choice. However, if you are looking to get a place in the UK in 2021 you will certainly find that the competition is intense. In recent years we have helped hundreds of British students go to dental schools. Their employment options upon graduation have certainly not been inferior to UK qualified dentists. We recommend that you tune in to our webinar to learn more about studying in five dental schools in Spain. We will be joined by Elisa Acquadro of Universidad Europea de Madrid and hope to have a student from Universidad Catolica de Valencia with us as well. This is the best chance for you to see whether dentistry in Spain should be part of your strategy in 2021 and beyond. (For 2020 it is probably too late but maybe there are still a few possibilities—this is a very strange year after all!) The webinar takes place on Thursday 18th June at 15.00 you can sign up here to take part
