CAREERS NEWSLETTER ‘NEW THIS WEEK’ 014

Welcome to the ‘working from home’ editions of Careers News! Having left our general working from home opportunities in this newsletter for a couple of weeks, we have now moved them into the longer version on the St Brendan’s Careers web page.

As many education and employment providers are adjusting to remote working, we will again be using ‘New This Week’ booklet for career development items that really are ‘New’ this week.

Jobs and Apprenticeships

All students Road Safety Assistant Apprentice Location: Badminton Road, Yate Hours: 37 hours per week

Would you like to start a career raising awareness of road safety and safer roads? Our teams at South Gloucestershire Council are making a real difference to the lives of people who live, work and learn here. We're planning for the future; building and improving the roads, railways, schools, green spaces, and houses. We've achieved a great deal, but we need talented and dedicated people to ensure we continue to make a difference. How you’ll make a difference:

Our Road Safety Team deliver road safety and sustainable education to communities throughout South Gloucestershire for the Council’s statutory duties and policies for Road Safety. As our apprentice you’ll make a difference by making young people safe by educating them in road safety and support safe sustainable journeys for the future and independence. What will a typical day look like? You’ll have the opportunity to work across the 4 avenues of our team: primary and pre-school, secondary schools and adults, Bikeability cycle training and collision investigation. You will play a key role in promoting, facilitating and delivering road safety education in nurseries, primary and secondary schools across South Gloucestershire. You will learn how to deliver road safety workshops, arrange for external theatre-in-education companies to visit schools, help with mini scooter and pedestrian training and support the administration of Bikeability cycle training.

And if that isn’t enough for you, we will train you to assist with the inputting of data into the Council’s injury accident database and develop knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and specialist equipment. You will also have the opportunity to undertake Road Safety GB training. We will allocate you a workplace mentor to give you guidance and support throughout your 18 month apprenticeship and completion of a Level 3 in Business Administration. What we need from you: Ideally hold a minimum qualification in GCSE English and Maths at grade C or 4 and above, or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Math’s. If you do not have these you must be willing to undertake and gain Functional Skills in English and Maths as part of the apprenticeship. Be confident in public speaking.

You will have good attention to detail to produce accurate, error free work. Be able to plan and organise your work. Excellent written and communication skills. Things we need you to know: Interviews will take place virtually using Teams Meeting. We anticipate to be able to offer you a start in September due to COVID 19. The salary for this apprenticeship is set at the current National Minimum Wage; Age Hourly rate Annual salary Aged 25+ £8.72 £16,823 Aged 21-24 £8.20 £15,820 Aged 18-20 £6.45 £12,443 Under 18 £4.55 £8,778

Jobs and Apprenticeships

Road Safety Assistant Apprentice Location: Badminton Road, Yate Hours: 37 hours per week As part of this training route you do need to undertake a basic skills assessment as part of the selection process. These will be emailed to you by the training provider, SGS College. The apprenticeship training requires you to attend day release on a Wednesday at SGS College, Filton Avenue, Filton, Bristol, BS34 7AF. (Please note this could be subject to change in light of COVID 19, to ensure you are safe in both the working and learning environment. The learning could be delivered remotely). You’ll be completing a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship which will provide you with a highly transferable set of knowledge and skills, which you gain by working for us. At college you’ll get to learn the following; • Principles of Business Administration • Personal and Professional Development • Managing Performance • Your Organisation • Communication in a Business Environment • Project Management • ICT for Business Your apprenticeship requires you to complete an end point assessment which will see you demonstrate what you have learned as an apprentice and how it can be applied in any other organisation. This will be another chance for you to shine! The end point assessment consists of a Knowledge Test (multiple choice), Portfolio based interview and Presentation. Don’t worry, we and your assessor will give you plenty of support and encouragement to ensure you are prepared and confident to complete this stage. We also have plenty of apprentices here that can give you tips and help ease any nerves or concerns, because they have completed an end point assessment themselves! In addition to your workplace mentor, you will also be allocated an assessor by SGS College, who will come to visit you at work to complete reviews. These reviews are simply to make sure you are on track and happy. We understand this is a lot of information and this apprenticeship might not be for everyone, but if you’ve read the above and are still excited about this opportunity we would love to hear from you.

For further information please contact Bernice bernice.williams@southglos.gov.uk or call 01454 863203. ‘We’re making a difference: be part of it.’

The Social Mobility Business Partnership is a not-for-profit that exists to give current Year 12 students with an interest in either a professional legal or accountancy career, a fantastic week of business insights and employability skills. Places are specifically reserved for students from low income backgrounds (please request the full eligibility criteria from ceiag@stbrn.ac.uk). This year the SMBP week is running Monday 26th October - Friday 30th October. During the SMBP week students have touch points with 4 high profile organisations and the Bristol Sports Foundation. We were hoping to run the week face-to-face at the participant organisations however with social distancing this year the week will run in a condensed and virtual format. With each of the organisations students are given the opportunity to develop their skills in the business context as well as gain an insight into how the legal, finance and other departments come together to deliver company strategy. With the Bristol Sports Foundation students learn all about resilience and goal planning. The transferable skills that students develop include: team working, presentations, negotiation, influencing, leadership and building relationships. These will help to equip you during interview situations when applying for university, internships or a job. To continue its support to students, SMBP offer an ongoing coaching portal for its alumni. This is supported by professional volunteers from our partner organisations to assist with personal statements, CV's, interview questions etc. Please feel free to share the SMBP website and this YouTube video, which has lots of information at hand. st

We are aiming to complete student recruitment by 31 July 2020. In the first instance students (who have real interest and meet the eligibility criteria) should email kirsty.green-mann@burges-salmon.com to confirm to reserve a place. They will then be directed to complete a SMBP application and confirm they are happy for information to be shared in line with GDPR requirements. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Gatsby Foundation recognises Virtual Work Experience and Virtual Talks as meeting Benchmarks The Gatsby Foundation have been monitoring virtual encounters and listening to feedback from schools and employers and have now updated Benchmarks 5 (Meaningful encounters with employers e.g. VTALKS) and 6 (Workplace experiences e.g. VWEX) to include interactive online encounters. Read more here. To meet the benchmarks, virtual encounters must involve meaningful two-way interactions between employers and young people, including students being able to ask questions, contribute, collaborate and engage deeply in the activity.

We are proud to confirm that Speakers for Schools Virtual Work Experience meets these criteria, with full interaction and participation required from all students taking part, for example through presentations worked on collaboratively and presented back to employers by students. We all know how vital these early experiences of work are and as Speakers for Schools Virtual Work Experience Gatsby now officially meets Benchmarks 5 and 6, we encourage you to apply for VWEX opportunities this summer. Placements are being offered with industry leading employers, including

Applications Now Open Wessex Water’s Young People’s Panel We have an exciting work experience opportunity for sixth formers and Year 11 students to get involved in the running of one of the largest businesses in our region. This is the fifth year of our Young People’s Panel which brings the views of young adults into the decision-making we do to plan our future operations. We’re recruiting 26 individuals who live in the Wessex Water region to join our panel, which will allow their voices to be heard at executive level and provide a unique opportunity for them to kickstart a career in the world of business. We are looking for sixth formers from all social backgrounds: this really is an opportunity for anyone who is interested. We’re hoping that you will encourage pupils to apply who might otherwise think something like this is ‘not for me’. How will your sixth formers benefit? They will have real influence on the decisions made by senior management as well as: • see inside the workings of a major business • meet other like-minded sixth formers from around the region • get a formal reference for use in UCAS or apprenticeship applications • get a £100 reward for taking part. What’s involved? The Young People’s Panel will meet on two occasions, Wednesday 16th September and Tuesday 3rd November. We are hoping that the meetings will be able to take place at Wessex Water’s headquarters in Bath under social distancing guidelines. However, should that not be possible we will arrange virtual meetings. The meetings will start at 10am and finish at approximately 4pm. We will reimburse individuals for all travel expenses. The meetings will include a mix of briefings from senior executives about the business and the challenges it faces and facilitated problem-solving exercises. Between the two meetings, members of the panel will work in teams on a main task. On the second day they will present to a senior board of judges. Who should apply? We would expect sixth formers to be one or more of the following:  Thinking about a career in a business setting; perhaps as an engineer, a product developer, in a financial, a customer service or marketing role, or even would-be entrepreneurs who plan to run their own business one day.  Someone who enjoys getting their point across: taking an active part in class discussions and debates and problem-solving.  A good team player: a good listener as well as a good talker! How to apply We are contacting a limited number of schools and colleges in our region so would encourage you to publicise the initiative to your sixth-formers so they have the opportunity to get involved. The application form is quick and easy and should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. Students can apply by following this link: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=QpcdYF_ttU-vwqG6cPex4z_xixpQyRGr0832DX6mzxUODAxUVFZNzdEN0c4NVUyRVQ1RFo4Q0pSVi4u

The closing date for applications is 5pm on Wednesday 15th July. Contact details Blue Marble Research, a specialist research and engagement agency, will be running this initiative. If you have any questions about the application process, please contact Jo Ballan-Whitfield at Blue Marble Research directly: wwpanel@bluemarbleresearch.co.uk or call 01761 239329. Further information While Wessex Water already works with many schools, colleges and universities in our region as part of our education programme, this young people’s panel goes a step further and allows young people to help influence what we do. The panel will be featured in future company reports and will inevitably be well-talked about with the water sector and local media. You can get a taste of what it is all about by following this link to a short video https://www.wessexwater.co.uk/corporate/customer-service/customer-engagement/youngpeoples-panel
