Higher Education
Studying in the Netherlands in 2021 and beyond
This webinar does suffer a little bit from two minutes of random content at the
beginning but it does give an overview of why studying in Holland is a good idea. Naomi Eustace also delivers a presentation about the University of Groningen and its offering for International Bachelor’s students.
After roughly half an hour we start answering questions from participants. We cover the following topics:
The university’s reopening strategy post Covid-19
Entry requirements for Dutch Universities and the application process
Brexit and its impact on British students and how this will differ in 2021 from now
Financing an education in the Netherlands bearing in mind the lack of British student loans
We believe this should form a good general introduction for any student thinking that Dutch Universities might be the way to go.

Higher Education Study in the USA—Sensible affordable options in these changing times.
Jelle Draper of Green River College gave an excellent account of his experiences as a student in the USA as well as valuable information for students looking to fund their education there.
After his presentation we answered about 40 minutes of questions and covered the following topics:
Are SATs/ACTs necessary for US Universities?
How do international transfer programs work?
Taking a gap year instead of a full degree
How to fiund studying in the US?
What is it like to be an international student in the US?
Higher Education Studying Dentistry in Spain We were joined by Elisa Acquadro of UEM and Ian Clark of GDC Education Ltd, the Universidad Catolica de Valencia admissions department
This webinar covers all aspects of studying dentistry in Spain and I struggle to see what else students might need to know. This is a very popular optin for British students in these times and the webinar will help potential students to understand whether or not it is a viable option for them.
We will have additional webinars in the future but it is now extremely likely that these will take place once schools return in September. However, we are always happy to speak to students who need some advice on their international options even throughout the summer holiday. If there is anything else you would like to talk about please feel free to contact me mark@astarfuture.co.uk or you can WhatsApp me on 07780503231

We are really sad not be hosting work experience at Rife Magazine, next week. The Watershed building remains closed for now and so much of the value of work experience comes from physically being in the professional space working with our teams of creatives. Our Rife team are still working through – supporting creatives to make content for the online magazine. So if any of your students do have ideas for content (written, film, photograph, illustrations etc.) on stories that matter to them they can pitch it here: https://www.rifemagazine.co.uk/get-involved/ This can be a great way for students to get mentoring, editorial advice and feedback from experts on their work plus start to build a portfolio of published work that can be great when applying for college, UCAS or jobs. Some of the recent content that has been pitched includes: Molly’s Guide to Green Spaces round Bristol that Boast your Mental Health: https://www.rifemagazine.co.uk/2020/06/go-to-these-green-spaces-in-bristol-to-boostyour-mental-health/

We look forward to working with you again when we host work experience next year.

Firstly I hope you are your families are well in these difficult times.
Of course this is not my preferred method of introduction but I am sure you can appreciate that trying to build new relationships in these current times are proving to be very difficult.
I am reaching out as we have a fantastic and exciting opportunity for school/college leavers (17-19 year olds) who are finishing either their BTEC’s or A-Levels. I am looking for students that would be interested in applying to start this September 2020 at the University of South Wales, undertaking a BSc degree in Football Coaching, Development and Administration.
So why is this opportunity so unique and exciting? Year 1 will be spent studying on campus in Cardiff or from home if studying at the University Campus is not possible, but in Years 2 and 3, students have an option to study and work in the USA, as well as an opportunity to undertake their FAW C Licence and UEFA B Licence as part of the course.
As a starting point, it would be fantastic if you were able to take a look at the link below. It provides a basic outline as to what the course is about, and the experience that is involved.

Careers Events, Info and Opportunities Spotlight on: Accountancy, Banking & Finance Careers
This week, we're zooming into the Accountancy, Banking & Finance Career Zones. There are loads of amazing opportunities for students - whether you're a school leaver or planning on going to uni - and we wanted to get you up to speed with some of the confusing jargon so you don't miss out.
Complete the worksheet to consolidate your learning Once you have read the email, please complete this worksheet to apply what you've learnt to your own future career
What's this Career Zone all about? It's a big Career Zone with lots of different types of jobs. But let's try to boil it down. Accountants are financial whizzes who make sure that businesses keep track of their money and pay their taxes - find out more here. At "professional services" firms, accountants work alongside other finance specialists, as well as non-finance people like lawyers. These firms help other organisations stay on top of their finances and other things they need to do by law. Banking is about lending and investing money. High-street or retail banks are where you and your family can apply for loans and save your money. Investment banks help people & organisations make money by investing
Literally dozens! But here are a few: Accountants: Help companieskeep track of their finances. Analysts: Find the best companies to invest money in. Fund managers: Invest money and make sure it grows in the way the customer wants. Cashiers: Help ordinary bank customers take out & pay in money, and apply for loans etc This is just the basics. There are loads of supporting jobs - from customer service and keeping complex IT systems running to looking after the staff. And in the accountancy world, there are many different types of accountant. Go to our Accountancy and Banking & Finance Career Zones to learn more.
Am I cut out for it? The skills and qualities you need depend on the career path you embark on, but there are some that will stand you in good stead whatever you do. You do have to be good at solving problems - but you don't have People skills: Likeability and the ability to work in a team. Communication. Curiosity and willingness to learn. Problem-solving. Hardworking and dedicated. Initiative: The ability to come up with your own ideas and act on
them.
Careers Events, Info and Opportunities Spotlight on: Accountancy, Banking & Finance Careers
Also, check out our guide to how improving your money management skills can give you a head start in your finance career - while also helping you stay in the money throughout your life.
Is a career in accountancy, banking and finance future proof? You betcha. FinTech (financial technology) is the new kid on the block and it is creating a loads of new jobs. Blockchain is a fancy new technology which a lot of fintech is based on - and some studies show that the demand for blockchain developers is growing by almost a third every year. As for accountants, many companies are encouraging them to take on a broader range of work, using their valuable accounting know-how to help businesses plan strategically for the future.
How do I get there? Apprenticeships/school leaver programmes If you're a school/college leaver at 16 or 18, you're spoilt for choice. Loads of banks, accountancy firms and professional services companies offer apprenticeships and school leaver programmes, all of which give you qualifications as you train in the job - making you a genuine bona fide pro. Click below to learn more: Accountancy apprenticeships Investment banking school leaver programmes High-street banking apprenticeships
University Graduate schemes are a well-established route into a career with accountancy firms, banks and professional services companies. You'll train in a high-skilled job and may work towards an accreditations - AKA letters after your name: Accountancy: Employers look for any university degree at 2:1 - that's right, it doesn't have to be a maths degree. Investment banking: To work on the investment side, you'll normally need a degree in maths or a similar, numerate subject, but you could work in a supporting role with any degree. Professional services: Plenty of employers take on graduates with degrees in any discipline. High-street banks: Banks generally hire grads as branch managers, although this will usually come a little way into your career.

Careers Events, Info and Opportunities MEDICAL CAPABILITIES Being in the Royal Navy Medical service you will be based within the NHS or a primary healthcare facility to maintain and develop your skills in preparation for operational commitments. You’ll then be mobilised to where you are needed most. This Newsletter provides information on various capabilities within the UK and overseas. ROLE 1 Defence Primary Health Care (DPHC) Provision of general practice and occupational health services is the responsibility of DPHC. It prvides primary healthcare, dentistry, rehabilitation and mental healthcare in the UK and overseas to service personnel and, where appropriate, their dependents. DPHC supports medical force preparation of service personnel deploying onoperations and exercises through the provision of health advice, preventative medicine, vaccinations, chemoprophylaxis and medical risk assessments. DENTAL: Royal Navy dental teams consist of Dental Officers, Dental Hygienists and Dental Nurses. As a team, they are responsible for maintaining the primary dental healthcare of all our serving personnel. This might be at one of our shoreside dental centres in any Naval Base or overseas on operations. Our dental teams work on board Queen Elizabeth class Aircraft Carriers, with a fully -fitted dental surgery and access to the sick bay’s operating theatre and ward facilities. On smaller ships, our dental teams utilise a portable dental unit that travels with them. MENTAL HEALTH: Mental health teams work primarily from the Department of Community Mental Health centres in Plymouth, Portsmouth and Faslane. They are responsible for the provision of mental health services to all our serving personnel and contribute significantly to maintaining holistic wellbeing of all our people and their operational effectiveness. There is a Waterfront Logistics Support Group (WLSG) which is a team of Mental Health nurses ready to deploy at short notice overseas to units who may have been exposed to traumatic events, ensuring we manage and treat everyone effectively.
ROLE 2 Light Manoeuvre (Commando Forward Surgical Group (CFSG)) CFSG last deployed on SAIF SAREEA in Oman, one of the largest international military exercises in the world. Sailors soldiers and aircrew from the UK and Oman train to reinforce their long standing military alliance. More recent deployments include Norway in support of the Royal Marines cold weather training. When not deployed or on military exercise this facility is located at Commando Logistics Regiment (CLR) in Barnstable. When deployed this capability provides R2 medical care in the field. CFSG conducts triage and advanced resuscitation procedures up to Damage Control Surgery and will usually evacuate its post-surgical cases to R3 for stabilisation and possible Primary Surgery prior to evacuation to R4. It is usually utilised during high intensity combat and located forward in brigade area of operations to deal with an anticipated surge of casualties. It has a limited holding capacity but offers the same medical support as R2A (2-1-2).
Careers Events, Info and Opportunities MEDICAL CAPABILITIES ROLE 2 Afloat (R2A) Because of the inherent nature of maritime operations medical evacuation timelines are often extended and where a Maritime or Land R3 Medical Facility is not available within 2 hours from the point of wounding, a suitable R2 facility must be available. This provides deployed emergency resuscitation, surgery and post operative intensive care within this 2 hour window and the ability to hold a patient post operatively until transfer to R3. R2A delivers consultant-led triage and resuscitation up to damage control resuscitation with basic laboratory and imaging capabilities and limited post-operative care and is primarily based on Bay Class and QE
ROLE 3 Maritime (MR3) Currently the only R3 capability within the RN (previously referred to as the Primary Casualty Receiving Facility) is located onboard RFA Argus. This fully equipped 100-bed medical complex, includes an emergency department with 4 resuscitation bays, 2 operating tables, 10 intensive care beds, 20 high dependency beds and 70 general beds. It also has a Radiology suite complete with a CT scanner, Pathology and Dental services. The Argus is not a designated hospital ship, as she carries weapons systems and has other military roles. When an MR3 capability is necessary for operations medical personnel are drawn from secondary care units and the Royal Marines Band Service to deliver R3 care.
ROLE 4 Joint Hospital Group Units (R4) There are 6 main centres that have a military presence, 4 are known as Joint Hospital Groups (JHGs). JHG (South) Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth, JHG (North) James Cook Hospital Middlesborough, JHG (South East) Frimley Park hospital Surrey, JHG (South West) Derriford Hospital Plymouth. The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is a dedicated training and research establishment for military personnel as well as a R4 hospital for repatriation of the wounded. Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Stanford Hall Loughborough provides expert rehabilitation and care to wounded or injured military personnel.
