Level 3 Study Programmes Entry requirements: A minimum of 5 GCSEs A*-C or 4-9 (including English Language). Level 2 vocational qualifications (e.g. BTEC/OCR) must be a merit grade or above and only one will count as one GCSE equivalent. Some courses have additional entry requirements - see individual course pages for details. The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is not accepted as a GCSE equivalent. There are two study routes at Level 3 and the one which you will follow will be determined by how well you do in your GCSEs and by your school reports. As a guide, if your average GCSE grade is 6.5 or above (mainly As & Bs, or 6-9) you will follow the Advanced Graduate Programme (AGP); if it is 6.4 or below, you will follow the Standard Level 3 Programme. To widen participation, special consideration will be given to students whose parents/carers did not go to university and have an average GCSE grade profile of 6.3 or above. AGP Programme Core components: 4 A-levels (or equivalent) or 3 A-levels plus EPQ (Other accompanying courses may be available).

The real student experience – Level 3 • •

My timetable is bespoke and designed to suit my own interests and the courses I have picked. It’s a one week timetable, so I got into a routine quickly and it didn’t take long to figure out where I needed to be and when. However, no two days within a week are the same, so things don’t get boring! I have Private Study sessions scattered throughout my timetable. It’s a chance for me to catch up on work and once that’s done, socialise with friends. I can use this time how I like and I don’t have to stay on campus either! I take three A-levels and I usually have lessons in two different subjects each day. Each week I have one session with my Tutor, as well as a lesson which stretches my literacy and numeracy skills and a weekly session of debate and discussion around current affairs and beliefs with my peers! There’s time each week to also enjoy enrichment activities too! Whether you’re interested in sport, performance or books, there’s something for everyone. I have also decided to take an Extended Project Qualification. It is optional, but will look great on my CV and is gives me an extra qualification equivalent to an AS Level. I often pop into the Careers Office to research my options after College. It’s easy to book a one-to-one appointment with a Careers Advisor, and there’s also a relaxing space with access to university prospectuses and information on gap years, apprenticeships and career paths. Private Study sessions are a great opportunity to start planning your future!

Academic Improvement
Students are assigned an Academic Mentor who will be there to support them throughout their time at College; from enrolment to graduation. Mentors are there to ensure students settle into College and are a central point of contact for students, teachers and home. Students meet with their mentor once a week for 45 minutes, either through a 1:1 session or a group meeting with peers. Academic Mentors will track student progress, discuss next steps and monitor attendance, to ensure students are achieving their full potential. The College works hard to mould students into independent learners, who are ready for university, apprenticeships or the world of work after College; Academic Mentors are key in achieving this.
At St Brendan’s Sixth Form College we recognise the importance of continued improvement in literacy and study skills – such skills can always be developed, no matter what level you’re at when you start your post-16 education.
6 / St Brendan’s Sixth Form College
Students have 45 minutes each week on their timetable to continue to improve literacy and study skills and build a foundation for success. The Academic Improvement Programme provides students with the opportunity to undertake independent study which will enrich their study at Level 3. The programme also helps to prepare students for life beyond college and encourages a lifelong passion for learning.
Religion, Philosophy and Ethics (RPE) The College is Catholic in its religious tradition, but does not impose a set of ideas and values on students. Instead, as part of our Catholic ethos St Brendan’s offers a compulsory course in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics to give students the opportunity to engage in debate and discussion on philosophical, religious and moral issues. Lessons are 45 mins per week. The course will cover interesting debate subjects such as: Does religion have a place in the 21st Century? What are the biggest issues facing young people of faith today? How important is interfaith dialogue in the world today?
Optional extras Advanced Graduate Programme (AGP) The Advanced Graduate Programme is a tailored programme of information, advice and guidance for academically gifted students. Learners on the programme will have an average GCSE grade of 6.5 or above. However, consideration will be given to students whose parents/carers didn’t go to university. The programme includes: • Specialist support for applications to competitive universities • Masterclasses & workshops • Visits to Oxford, Cambridge and other universities • Access to specialist schemes e.g. Cambridge’s Pathways to Success • Dedicated Oxbridge preparation sessions
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Career Academies
The EPQ is for second year students, and is a fantastic way to support learning and improve university applications. The EPQ involves students embarking upon an independent project in their second year of study. Learners choose a topic linked with one of their A-levels and are tasked with making an artefact with a 1500 word report, or writing a 5000 word essay. An EPQ is worth the equivalent of half an A-level (28 UCAS points) and is highly regarded by universities. St Brendan’s has a 100% EPQ pass rate, with the majority of passes at grade A* - B.
St Brendan’s is pleased to work with Career Ready, a UK charity that links employers with College’s like St Brendan’s, to open up the world of work to young adults! Career Ready gives students from all backgrounds the confidence, skills and networks to achieve their potential and have access to some of the best careers in the country.
Previous projects have included: • Nature versus Nurture: Are athletes born or made? • Can Fracking be justified in the UK?
There are currently three Career Academies at St Brendan’s: • Business & IT • Performing Arts, Film, Media & Music • Sport Sixth Form College / 7 St Brendan’s
The Career Ready programme includes: Access to industry related qualifications Mentors Work Experience Guru Lectures
