Level 3 Study Programmes Entry requirements: A minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grades A*-C or at points 4-9 (including English Language). Level 2 vocational qualifications (e.g. BTEC/OCR) must be a merit grade or above and will count as 1 GCSE equivalent. Some courses may have additional entry requirements - see individual course pages for full details. The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is not accepted as a GCSE equivalent. There are two study routes at Level 3 and the one which you will follow will be determined by how well you do in your GCSEs and by your school reports. As a guide, if your average GCSE grade is 6.8 or above you will follow the Advanced Graduate Programme (AGP), if your average GCSE grade is 6.7 or below you will follow the Standard Programme. However, special consideration will be given to male students and to students whose parents/carers did not go to university, who have an average GCSE grade of 6.5 or above. The real student experience – Level 3 • •

My timetable is bespoke and designed to suit my own interests and the courses I have picked. It’s a one week timetable, so I got into a routine quickly and it didn’t take long to figure out where I needed to be and when. However, no two days within a week are the same, so things don’t get boring! I have Private Study sessions scattered throughout my timetable. It’s a chance for me to catch up on work and once that’s done, socialise with friends. I can use this time how I like and I don’t have to stay on campus either! I take three A-levels and I usually have lessons in two different subjects each day. Each week I have one session with my Tutor, as well as a lesson which stretches my literacy and numeracy skills and a weekly session of debate and discussion around current affairs and beliefs with my peers! There’s time each week to also enjoy enrichment activities too! Whether you’re interested in sport, performance or books, there’s something for everyone. I have also decided to take an Extended Project Qualification. It is optional, but will look great on my CV and is gives me an extra qualification equivalent to an AS Level. I often pop into the Careers Office to research my options after College. It’s easy to book a one-to-one appointment with a Careers Advisor, and there’s also a relaxing space with access to university prospectuses and information on gap years, apprenticeships and career paths. Private Study sessions are a great opportunity to start planning your future!

Level 2 Study Programmes Entry requirements: A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade D or at point 3 (including English Language) of which only one can be a Level 2 vocational qualification (e.g. BTEC/OCR) at Pass grade or above. The diagram below illustrates the elements of a Level 2 timetable – the main subject of study is accompanied by a series of smaller programmes and support sessions, to ensure every student is fully developing their skills.

My timetable is unique and built around my own interests. College life isn’t repetitive. No two days of the week are the same, which is great! However, I have a one week timetable, which means I got to know where I was going and what I was doing quickly. It’s completely different to school and much more of an adult environment. I have Private Study lessons scattered throughout my timetable. This is a chance for me to catch up on work. I don’t have to stay at College during this time either, so I can study from home (and relax too)! Each day I have one or two lessons in my Level 2 BTEC, and one or two Private Study periods. I also have one session a week with my Tutor and one lesson focused on Work Skills, as well as time designated to improving my literacy and numeracy, and a weekly session to debate and discuss current affairs and beliefs with my peers. I’m retaking one of my GCSEs. I have four GCSE lessons each week. There’s time each week to also enjoy enrichment activities too! Whether you’re interested in sport, performance or books, there’s something for everyone. I often pop into the Careers Office to research my options after College. It’s easy to book a one-to-one appointment with a Careers Advisor, and there is also a relaxing space with access to university prospectuses and information on gap years, apprenticeships and career paths. Private Study sessions are a great opportunity to start planning your future!

Additional Learning Programmes Religion, Philosophy and Ethics The College is Catholic in it’s religious tradition but we do not impose a set of ideas and values on students. Instead, as part of our Catholic ethos we offer a compulsory course in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics to give students the opportunity to engage in debate and discussion on philosophical, religious and moral issues. Lessons are 45 mins per week and cover debate subjects such as: • Does religion have a place in the 21st Century? • What are the biggest issues facing young people of faith today? • How important is interfaith dialogue in the world today?

8 / St Brendan’s Sixth Form College

Academic Improvement Programme At St Brendan’s Sixth Form College we recognise the importance of continued improvement in literacy and numeracy – such skills can always be developed, no matter what level you’re at when you start your post-16 education. Students have 45 minutes each week on their timetable to continue to improve literacy and numeracy skills. Personalised Academic Improvement Programmes provide students with individualised learning materials which cover learning gaps; identified prior to enrolment through diagnostic assessments. The sessions are set at an appropriate level, and supported by experienced Learning Development and teaching staff.
